Free Fire

Friday 31 March – Thursday 13 April Ben Wheatley returns with all guns blazing in a blackly comic shoot-em-up that would make John Carpenter proud. The setting is Boston in 1978 and a deserted warehouse where Provisional IRA members Frank (Michael Smiley) and Chris (Cillian Murphy) arrive to buy enough assault rifles and ammunition to start a small war. Justine (Brie Larson) has brokered the deal but everybody seems to want a piece of the action. As trigger fingers twitch, egos clash and tempers fray, all hell is about to break loose. Run for cover and savour a brilliant, bruising thrill ride. GFF17. Watch our Q&A with director Ben Wheatley and Jack Reynor at glasgowfilm.org The screening on Monday 3 April (18.30) will be introduced by Alistair Harkness as part of the Contemporary Cinema Course. Director Ben Wheatley Cast Brie Larson, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy, Sharlto Copley, Jack Reynor, UK 2016, 1h30m, 15

The Age of Shadows Miljeong

Friday 31 March – Thursday 6 April Kim Jee-woon’s nail biting, cloak and dagger thriller is set at the close of the 1920s, during the Japanese occupation of Korea. Police captain Lee Jung-chool (Song Kang-ho) is under pressure to expose members of the Korean resistance. He concentrates on Kim Woo-jin (Gong Yoo) who is secretly plotting to smuggle explosives from Shanghai into Seoul. As Lee’s sympathies edge towards the resistance, the hunter becomes the hunted in a tale of shifting loyalties, betrayal and vengeance. GFF17 Director Kim Jee-woon Cast Song Kang-ho, Gong Yoo, Han Ji-min, South Korea 2016, 2h19m, subtitles, 15

The Lost City of Z

Friday 31 March – Thursday 6 April Based on the true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett and his quixotic quest into uncharted realms of the South American jungle, searching for a presumed ancient civilization. Refreshingly classical in its approach, director James Gray refrains from adding superfluous escapades and instead honours the Fawcett family’s real story of physical risk, intellectual curiosity and individual daring. Exquisitely shot on film and superbly acted by a cast including Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller and BAFTA Rising Star Tom Holland. Director James Gray Cast Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller, USA 2017, 2h21m, 15

Neruda

Friday 7 – Thursday 13 April Described by prolific director Pablo Larraín ( The Club, Jackie) as “more of a ‘Nerudian’ film than it is a film about Neruda”; this latest provocative work weaves an exuberantly irreverent fantasy around events in the life of the poet and politician. In the early days of the Cold War, as Chile aligned itself with America, Neruda’s communist convictions saw him branded an enemy of the state and he was obliged to go into hiding. Gormless police inspector Oscar Peluchonneau (Gael Garcia Bernal) is soon on the case in a playful, fantastic-looking film that is as entertainingly constructed as it is surprisingly illuminating. GFF17 Director Pablo Larraín Cast Gael Garcia Bernal, Luis Gnecco, Mercedes Moran, Chile/Argentina/France/Spain/USA 2016, 1h48m, subtitles, 15

It’s Only the End of the World Juste la fin du monde

Who’s Gonna Love Me Now?

Sat 1 (14.30) & Sun 2 Apr (19.15) Assured young auteur Xavier Dolan returns with his sixth feature, an adaptation of Jean-Luc Lagarce’s play: a claustrophobic family drama about an award-winning dramatist who returns to his hometown after more than a decade away. Revealing to his family that he is dying, Louis (Gaspard Ulliel) ignites a pressure cooker of familial melodrama with each member of the household adding to the histrionics in their own way. Dolan filters the drama through Louis’ own woozy outlook and an ensemble cast that includes Marion Cotillard, Vincent Cassell and Léa Seydoux.

Sunday 2 April (15.45) At the age of 21, Saar Maoz arrived in London after being kicked out of his kibbutz for not being ‘religious’. When the highs of his new found freedom come crashing down around him, Saar seeks solace in the arms of the London Gay Men’s Chorus. Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2016 Berlin Film Festival, Who’s Gonna Love Me Now? celebrates the triumph of love over hate, and of understanding over ignorance. Followed by a satellite Q&A with the film’s directors hosted by Julian Clary, plus a performance by the London Gay Men’s Chorus, live from The Barbican.

Director Xavier Dolan Cast Marion Cotillard, Vincent Cassel, Léa Seydoux, Canada/France 2016, 1h39m, subtitles, 15

Directors Tomer Heymann, Barak Heymann, Alexander Bodin Saphir, Israel/UK 2016, 1h30m, some subtitles, 15

I Am Not Your Negro

Friday 7 – Thursday 13 April Fifty years after the Civil Rights movement, race remains a defining issue in America. James Baldwin’s final book Remember This House was due to address the lives and assassinations of his friends Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. The unfinished manuscript has been entrusted to director Raoul Peck who uses Baldwin’s powerful words, narrated by Samuel L Jackson, along with a wealth of archive footage to reflect on the legacy of these men and contrast with the present day killings of young African-Americans. The result is a vital, awardwinning exploration of what it means to be black in America. GFF17 Specially commissioned programme notes will be available. Director Raoul Peck, USA/France/Belgium/Switzerland 2016, 1h33m, 15

Raw

The Nights of ZayendehRood Shabhaye Zayendeh-Rood

Friday 7 – Thursday 13 April A Cannes Critics’ Week prizewinner, Julia Ducournau’s debut feature is a surreal and deliriously twisted coming-of-age story. Attending her first year at veterinarian college, shy vegetarian Justine is forced into eating raw liver as part of a vicious hazing process by older students. However, she soon develops an unhealthy taste for meat that drives her to commit acts of increasing savagery, as unquenched sexual urges turn into an appetite for human flesh. Bold, daring, provocative and shocking. GFF17 Preceded by DepicT! Award-winning film Impacts (1m44s) by director Petra Balekic.

Friday 14 – Sunday 16 April This early feature from Iranian auteur Mohsen Makhmalbaf recounts the story of an anthropology lecturer and his daughter through three distinct periods; the last years of the Shah, the revolution and its painful aftermath. Due to its bold critique of Iranian society, the film was long thought destroyed by Iranian censors, and only in 2016 the surviving elements of the film were screened for the second time ever at Venice Film Festival. A rich and rewarding look at family, lost love and the legacy of violence that has shaped contemporary Iranian society.

Director Julia Ducournau Cast Garance Marillier, Ella Rumpf, Rabah Nait Oufella, France/Belgium 2016, 1h28m, subtitles, 18

Director Mohsen Makhmalbaf Cast Manuchehr Esmaili, Mojgan Naderi, Parvaneh Goharani, Iran 1990, 1h5m, subtitles, 12

A Quiet Passion

Friday 14 – Thursday 20 April Terence Davies’ A Quiet Passion offers a sumptuous, deeply felt reflection on the life of poet Emily Dickinson. Almost unknown in her lifetime, Dickinson (a luminous Cynthia Nixon) grew increasingly reclusive in her later years, looking inwards for her creative inspiration. Davies captures a sense of a stubborn, fiercely independent woman too sensitive for an age that seemed determined to stifle her hopes and crush her spirit. Graced by memorable performances from Jennifer Ehle as Emily’s sister Lavinia and Catherine Bailey as her friend Miss Buffan, this is an elegant portrait of an artist. GFF17

Monday 17 – Thursday 20 April Venya, a high school student in modern-day Russia, believes that the world has been lost to evil. Piously studying the Bible, he challenges the morals and beliefs of all those around him, particularly his mother and his liberal, Jewish biology teacher Elena. Objecting Darwinian theories of evolution and modern teachings on sex, gender and sexuality, Venya begins to reveal more about himself than the world around him. Intelligently adapted from Marius von Mayenburg’s play ‘Martyr’, this scathing and satirical film balances its harsh social critique with delicate and soaring cinematography.

Director Terence Davies Cast Cynthia Nixon, Jennifer Ehle, Keith Carradine, UK/Belgium 2016, 2h5m, 12A: upsetting scenes of illness

Director Kirill Serebrennikov Cast Yuliya Aug, Viktoriya Isakova, Pyotr Skvortsov, Russia 2016, 1h55m, subtitles, 15

The Sense of an Ending

Friday 14 – Thursday 27 April Divorced and retired, Tony Webster (Jim Broadbent) leads a relatively quiet life, until one day a long-forgotten letter resurfaces, and begins to reframe his past in ways that he never could have anticipated. Based on the award-winning bestseller from Julian Barnes, Ritesh Batra ( The Lunchbox) artfully melds twin timelines as Tony pieces together his first love, and the heartbreak, regrets and guilt that followed. Luminous performances from Broadbent and Charlotte Rampling anchor this profound story about the elusiveness of memory and the allure of the past. The screening on Monday 17 April (18.05) will be introduced by Alistair Harkness as part of the Contemporary Cinema Course. Director Ritesh Batra Cast Jim Broadbent, Charlotte Rampling, Matthew Goode, UK 2017, 1h48m, 15

Their Finest

Friday 21 – Thursday 27 April Lone Scherfig’s (An Education) bittersweet adaptation of Lissa Evans’ novel follows the making of morale-boosting propaganda films during the Second World War. Gemma Arterton shines as Catrin, the Welsh wordsmith hired to add a female perspective to the films. Despite her talent she soon finds herself battling for respect in a male dominated world. Boosted by an excellent ensemble cast including star turns from Bill Nighy and Richard E Grant, Their Finest is a witty, poignant and unexpectedly charming tale from the home front. GFF17 Director Lone Scherfig Cast Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy, UK 2016, 1h57m, 12A: infrequent strong language, moderate sex, injury detail

The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki

Friday 21 – Thursday 27 April Juho Kousmanen’s feel-good, award-winning debut feature is a charming tribute to modest, unassuming boxer Olli Mäki (Jarkko Lahti). In 1962, Mäki carried the hopes of the nation as he trained for a Helsinki showdown with American Davey Moore, the bantamweight champion of the world. Mäki is feeling the pressure, a situation only exacerbated by his growing romance with Raija (Oona Airola). What price is glory, when love decides to pay a call? GFF17 Preceded by DepicT! Award-winning film Living (UK 2016, 1m44s) by director Ben Mankin. Handsome Devil

From Friday 28 April Ned is a gawky, artistic 16-year-old who is failing to settle into his new boarding school where rugby is virtually a religion. He guards himself from the loneliness, ridicule and constant insinuations about his sexuality with literature and music. Everything changes with the dual arrival of new roommate Connor, a star rugby player, and inspirational English teacher Dan Sherry. Ned and Connor bond over a shared passion for music and an unlikely friendship blossoms; one that faces unbearable pressures from a school grimly attached to its macho values. GFF17. Preceded by DepicT! Award-winning film Run Boy (Philipines 2016, 1m44s) by director Meg Bagadion. Director John Butler Cast Fionn O’Shea, Nicholas Galitzine, Andrew Scott, Ireland 2016, 1h35m, CTBC N/C 15+

Clash Eshtebak

Friday 21 – Thursday 27 April Set in 2013, this tense, harrowing, state-of-thenation drama pitches the audience into the turmoil of the mass protests that toppled the ruling Muslim Brotherhood. In the crushing heat of an already fraught day, rival demonstrators, innocent bystanders, allies and bitter foes are bundled into a police van. It is the beginning of a living nightmare in which the claustrophobic setting and frazzled tempers spark endless disagreements, resentment and conflict that builds with all the intensity of a pressure cooker destined to explode. GFF17 Director Mohamed Diab Cast Nelly Karim, Hani Adel, Tarek Abdel Aziz, Egypt/France/Germany 2016, subtitles, 1h37m, 15

Letters from Baghdad

Tuesday 25 – Thursday 27 April Directors Sabine Krayenbühl and Zeva Oelbaum weave together a rich tapestry of archive footage, writings and testimonies for peers (narrated by Tilda Swinton) in their fascinating account of pioneering English writer, archaeologist, diplomat and spy Gertrude Bell. Despite the hugely significant role that Bell played in post World War I British imperial policy-making in the Middle East (particularly Iraq), she has been somewhat unacknowledged in history. Openly critical of colonial practices, she helped shape the destiny of the Middle East in a way that still reverberates today. CINEMASTERS: DAVID LYNCH

A singular and daring outsider artist who is preoccupied with the dark absurdities of the American psyche, David Lynch has blazed a truly unique trail through cinema in the past four decades. Mostly silent for over 10 years, Lynch will soon return to the small screen with a revival of his unparalleled and much-loved TV series Twin Peaks. We celebrate this legendary filmmaker with this season of his work. Specially commissioned programme notes will be available for this season. The Elephant Man

Sunday 9 (16.45) & Tuesday 11 April (20.15) The only film David Lynch has made based on a true story; it is easy to see why Joseph’s Merrick’s captivating tale of human dignity, caught the auteur’s attention. Severely deformed, John Merrick (changed from Joseph for the film) is terribly mistreated by Victorian society, in particular a freak show where he has found sad employment. It is only when he comes under the care of doctor Frederick Treves that he is able to communicate his intelligence, sensitivity and humility. Featuring a performance from the late, great John Hurt that is both measured and staggeringly heartbreaking, The Elephant Man remains one of Lynch’s most affecting films. Director David Lynch Cast John Hurt, Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft, USA/UK 1980, 1h58m, PG

Eraserhead

Friday 14 (23.00) & Sunday 16 April (13.30) The incendiary debut feature of David Lynch, Eraserhead is a nocturnal odyssey like no other. Filmed over several years on next to no budget, it had been labelled as too bizarre and unclassifiable, but today is well remembered as one of the most seminal works in American cinema. Jack Nance plays the wire-haired protagonist, who stalks Lynch’s industrial netherworld and finds himself caring for a strange, inhuman offspring. The epitome of visionary cinema, Eraserhead taught generations of filmmakers that it was possible to push the boundaries and potential of cinema. Director David Lynch Cast Jack Nance, Charlotte Stewart, Allen Joseph, USA 1977, 1h25m, 18

Lost Highway

Sunday 16 (16.00) & Tuesday 18 April (20.05) ‘Lost Highway deserves to be spoken of in the same breath as the cult director’s best work.’ - Little White Lies Although it received some negative criticism on its release, David Lynch’s seventh feature has since developed a strong cult following, a critical reappraisal and even been adapted into an opera. Bill Paxton stars as a jazz saxophonist who is convicted of murdering his wife (Patricia Arquette), who then inexplicably morphs into a young mechanic with a new life, one that nonetheless begins to tangle with Fred’s life in a darkly surreal web of mystery. Screening on 35mm. Director David Lynch Cast Bill Paxton, Patricia Arquette, Balthazar Getty, USA 1997, 2h8m, 18

Wild at Heart

Sunday 23 (16.30) & Tuesday 25 April (20.20) David Lynch provides his very own unique take on The Wizard of Oz, following the passionate relationship of Lula (Laura Dern) and Sailor (Nicholas Cage); a dream team on the run from the mob. One of the most romantic – and violent – films in Lynch’s oeuvre, the film won the Palme d’Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival but (like many of Lynch’s films) received both positive and negative reviews from the audience before building up an ecstatic cult following. Screening on 35mm. Director David Lynch Cast Nicholas Cage, Laura Dern, Willem Dafoe, USA 1990, 1h59m, 18

Mulholland Drive

Sunday 30 April (18.45) & Tuesday 2 May (19.45) Arguably David Lynch’s crowning cinematic glory, Mulholland Drive is a stunning film that succeeds on multiple levels, being simultaneously a darkly comic Hollywood satire, a deeply disturbing trip into a woman’s troubled mind and a hugely compelling riddle in film form. It’s ambitious, puzzling and deftly cinematic, and it allowed Lynch to showcase a revelatory performance from Naomi Watts as Betty/Diane, the two sides of Mulholland Drive’s split personality. TWIN PEAKS

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

Friday 5 (23.00) & Sunday 7 May (16.30) In the pilot episode of Twin Peaks, the body of high-school student Laura Palmer is found washed up on the banks of a river outside the titular town. Initially a symbol of young innocence and purity, her troubles are gradually uncovered and the true darkness of the town revealed. This prequel film recounts the last week of her life, along with the murder of a night-shift waitress in the town of Deer Meadow. A necessary piece of the puzzle that deserves to be seen on the big screen before the return of the television series. Screening on 35mm. Director David Lynch Cast Sheryl Lee, Ray Wise, Kiefer Sutherland, Kyle MacLachlan, USA 1992, 2h15m, 18

Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces

Sunday 14 (19.45) & Tuesday 16 May (18.15) Rarely seen on the cinema screen, this is a feature length cut of the footage that David Lynch was forced to edit out of his 1992 film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Assembled by Lynch himself, the scenes in this edit range from the bizarre to the truly heart-breaking in their exploration of Laura Palmer and the occupants of Twin Peaks. Offering much greater insight into the numerous subplots of Fire Walk With Me, along with serving the greater mysteries from the series as a whole, The Missing Pieces is a must see for any fan of Twin Peaks. Lady Macbeth

From Friday 28 April Florence Pugh confirms the promise of The Falling with a powerful central performance in a stunning period drama that marks an auspicious film debut from theatre director William Oldroyd. Nikolai Leskov’s novel is transported to rural England in the 1860s where the marriage of Katherine (Pugh) to the older Alexander (Paul Hilton) is more of a business opportunity than a love match. At the mercy of an oppressive male household, Katherine finds an ally in her maid Anna (Naomie Ackie) and the possibility of escape in a reckless affair with stable hand Sebastian (Cosmo Jarvis). Suntan

From Friday 28 April Winner of Best International Feature at the 2016 Edinburgh International Film Festival, Suntan is an unflinching Greek drama with moments of humour in the vein of Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Attenberg or Yorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth and The Lobster. On the resort island of Antiparos, forty-something doctor Kostis (Chevalier’s Efthymis Papadimitriou) becomes infatuated with a group of hedonistic young tourists, particularly 21-year-old Anna. An amusingly discomforting coming of-middle-age film, Suntan is a cautionary tale of a man’s quest to regain a bygone youth. SOUND & VISION

Sleaford Mods: Bunch of Kunst Friday 21 – Sunday 23 April Thanks to their sweary rants about modern England, Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods have been called “the voice of Britain” by their fans, “Britain’s angriest band” by the Guardian and “The world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll band” by Iggy Pop. Jason Williamson (a former chicken factory worker and father of two), his band mate Andrew Fearn and their manager Steve Underwood (an avant-garde bedroom label owner and former bus driver) have won over fans with their brutally honest lyrics and DIY ethos. Following them on their two-year journey from bedroom recording sessions to mainstream success, Christine Franz’s official documentary feature tells the story of three guys taking on the music business on their own terms.
