NEWS

IT’S O

Welcome once again to G&R News and the opportunity to highlight all the great things that are happening at Huntingwood in our 5th issue. This year we are celebrating our 70th anniversary, which is a tremendous milestone for our company. In the course of our 70-year history, the industry and the products we sell and maintain have changed tremendously, but one factor remains unchanged. The strength and future of the Gilbert & Roach business depends on our ability to provide you with the very best levels of customer service throughout all the brands we sell, service and maintain. I hope that your experience of working with our company more than lives up to our company philosophy. In this issue of G&R News we look at the efficiency of the timber industry through the experience of Oberon-based Mangan Logging. We are proud to provide a wide range of Kenworth products to this progressive company and thank them for remaining a long-standing customer. From a large rural based fleet to an owner-operator and we are very pleased to profile Renato Brozessi and his Kenworth T909. Renato is a subcontractor for Boral Industries, and, like many trucking families, he receives tremendous support from his wife Leanne, son Andrew and daughter Kayla. With a fleet that covers a wide range of applications, from B-doubles with Kenworth prime movers to Isuzu medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks, we welcome Turtle Landscapes. With a total focus on providing every possible requirement for gardening and landscaping, the Turtle fleet with its bright yellow paintwork is well known throughout all Sydney suburbs. Turning to DAF Trucks, and in this issue we showcase how three DAF CF trucks are performing well in the world of concrete as high-pressure pump units for Azzurri Concrete. The DAF with its ideal weight distribution is ideal for this type of application and the CF adds its own standards of extra comfort for the driver. 2

GILBERT & ROACH angan Logging of Oberon is committed to the Kenworth brand for its demonstrated strength and reliability in the tough off-road world of the logging industry. As a long-term customer of Gilbert & Roach of Huntingwood, this thirdgeneration family business has specialised in efficient and effective forestry management and softwood plantation logging.

Originally from the Wyong area north of Sydney, the family moved to Oberon, switching from hardwoods to softwood and finding that regeneration is the key to operating a sustainable business. “After 40 years of working in the plantation forests around Oberon we are now logging areas that my grandfather logged when he first moved here,” said Chris Mangan. “Dad bought the business from my grandfather and at that time we were operating one harvester and one forwarder. Today the forest equipment has expanded to15 harvesters and 20 forwarders, plus our road transport division that comprises 25 B-double log trucks and a further 10 subcontractors working with us.

STABLE GROWTH KENWORTH T909S ARE THE TOP SPEC UNITS IN THE MANGAN LOGGING FLEET

4

GILBERT & ROACH APRIL 2016

CLEAN LIVING The Mangan Logging fleet is now almost 100 percent comprised of Kenworth prime movers, with a variety of models that include K108s, K200s, T659s, T409 SAR models, T408 SARs, and, the two latest acquisitions, a pair of T909s.

“We run a strict service regime of oil drains at 13,000 km during a B-service that is also supported by oil sampling analysis. An A service complete with visual inspection takes place every seven working days, and we complete a full C service annually, which is also a rego inspection.

The move to Kenworth generated a change in engine supplier to Cummins.

“Although in the past we have fitted automatic greasing systems, we find that due to the type of harsh road conditions we encounter with our vehicles there was the occasional example of contamination with the electrical system.

“With Cummins engines we have eight that are the original EGR engines, the remainder now are all ISXe5 EGR and SCR units using AdBlue,” said Chris. “The change to the ISXe5 engines resulted in a major difference in fuel economy – from a previous average of 1.0 km/litre, the introduction of the ISXe5 engine reduced fuel consumption to 2.0 km/litre for those running longer distances. If they are running local that consumption figure drops back to 1.6-1.7 km/litre. “Our longest daily run would be from Oberon to Tumut, a round trip of nine hours for an overall distance of around 700 km. “Drivers find the ISXe5 is much more driver friendly. Initially they were concerned we might have some Jake brake problems, but that has not eventuated. The engine has a nice consistent throttle and our drivers are commenting they are nicer to drive and are back to where the Cummins engines used to be before the advent of the EGR-only version,” said Chris.

“We prefer to grease manually as it ensures that while completing the greasing the mechanic is able to look more closely at the component for any other issues. “Kenworth really rules the market as far as big trucks are concerned, and we find it shows in terms of reliability by the way they are put together and the greater durability of the electrical systems. “For logging purposes the T659 is an ideal specification. We are moving away in preference from the SAR models due to the extra time required for some service items such as the need to lift the nearside of the cab when doing a hot-set. “Although the T909 sports the longer bonnet and is much bigger in appearance, we find our service team can complete a hot-set within 30 minutes through the improved engine access.

The Mangans Logging fleet has retained manual transmissions throughout the fleet specification, preferring the benefit of being able to select and stay with a specific gear in off-road and sometimes boggy conditions, rather than switching to automated manual transmissions (AMTs).

“Our decision to purchase T909s comes back to driver preference. They have the option of influencing our decisions and that’s their choice. While operators in the city have to contend with reduced visibility caused by the longer bonnet, in the forest areas where we operate this is not a concern.

“Where possible we run with 600 hp and go for maximum torque ratings of 2050 lb-ft except where that is not feasible as with the SARs. All our gearbox choices are based on the 20-Series Fuller Roadranger units. All our fleet operates under satellite tracking monitoring using the Securatrak GPS Fleet Tracking Solutions with messaging screens in the trucks for two-way contact back to the office.

“Roll stability systems are dramatically reducing the number of rollover incidents occurring in the logging industry, and as these systems increase in their fitment there’s no doubt the industry safety record will benefit. “We worked very closely with Kennedy Trailers of Bairnsdale, Victoria, to find alternative options to running 19-metre B-doubles whereby we could reduce the load height and raise safety standards without impairing efficiency or productivity,” said Chris Mangan.

GILBERT & ROACH APRIL 2016

5

GILBERT & ROACH “Having seen the introduction of 23-metre B-doubles in Victoria, we wanted to achieve commonality with those regulations and the additional productivity they provided. “In 2013 we bought our first two 23-metre units. These were still mini-B’s with seven axles configured with bogie/bogie trailers. “While matching the same original gross weight of the 19-metre units, we’ve increased the payload by 4.0 tonnes per load. As we can now carry 6.0-metre length logs we’ve reduced the payload height by up to 2.0 metres, so the entire combination becomes much more stable with a lower centre of gravity. “The safety benefit is huge, and as an extra benefit we are 4.0 tonnes better off at the same gross weight of 57 tonnes on mass management. It also gives us better axle weight readings. “On a 19-metre we might typically have a reading on the on-board scales of 17 tonnes on drive, then 15 tonnes in the middle and 16 tonnes on the back. With our 23-metre B-doubles the weight distribution is a consistent 17 tonnes on each axle set.

“The Big Foot system enables us to drop tyre pressures to 20 psi in the mud and then reinflate when we gain better traction. When running unladen on the highway the Big Foot system also enables us to drop our tyre pressures to 65-70 psi, from our fully-loaded pressure rating of 90 psi,” said Chris. “Looking ahead to the future we believe the next step for the logging industry is to introduce the greater use of 23-metre bogie/bogie trailers. “Eventually, as the roads get better, we can go 25-metre tri-tri alternatives. With the logging industry you don’t actually gain too much in terms of payload as lengths increase. You do gain benefits in improved road safety, but as the equipment becomes more complex you have to be much better in terms of road quality,” he added. “Presentation is really important to our company and the appearance of the trucks has been enhanced significantly by the involvement of A & I Auto Electrical, which has been responsible for all the additional lighting and stainless steel work,” concluded Chris Mangan.

“The introduction of electronic braking systems and anti-lock brakes (EBS and ABS) have made a huge difference. All our newer gear has it and we use all BPW drum brakes and suspension. “In terms of other equipment, we fit on-board weighing systems by Pacific in Tasmania and we fit our drive axles with a tyre inflation system called Big Foot, which is manufactured in New Zealand. ExTe log bolsters (or bunks) combine a steel base with aluminium stakes for high strength and low weight.

TURTLE

TIME I

t’s always great to meet people filled with a whole heap of passion about what they do. The team at Turtle Nursery and Landscape Supplies is happy to comment, “Our thumbs are green, we enjoy talking about soil and we love watching grass grow.”

As one of Sydney’s leading landscape suppliers, the Turtle brand identity works well in forming a strong bond with local householders and builders alike. The company’s main depots at South Windsor and Rouse Hill are packed with all types of soils, aggregates, sand and gravel, let alone the dozens of plants and different choices of landscaping equipment and building products. Undoubtedly one of the best sources of information for finding out how to make your garden grow is to talk with any members of the sales team. There you’ll find all the experience to provide the right advice, provided the listener has time for a chat. “We have a great team and many of our employees have been with us in some case for over 30 years. Put all that knowledge and enthusiasm together and we have an immense foundation for making our business a success,” said managing director and company founder, Barry Locock. “We literally are a seven-day-a-week business, and making sure that we keep all our supplies up to date means running a highly efficient fleet of trucks. Our truck fleet travels all over New South Wales to bring in the materials to our nurseries and also to distribute them to our customers,” Barry added. Barry Locock founded the Turtle business some 41 years ago on July 1st 1975, with his first truck being an AEC Mammoth Major, a British truck brand that was powered by a Leyland diesel engine of 248 hp. He has subsequently repurchased the truck and it is being restored. With the one truck, Barry found wharf work and then quarry work, before moving into landscaping. Not one for taking holidays, he is usually found at work on a daily basis, although in recent years his workload has been shared with his sons Mark, Peter and Paul, with Mark controlling the yard out of Windsor and with Peter and Paul being based at Rouse Hill. 8

GILBERT & ROACH APRIL 2016

“I am intensely proud of the business we have built over the years and the many excellent relationships that have contributed to our growth. I am very fortunate now that I can pass on a lot of the daily responsibilities to my sons so I can actually think of taking the occasional break,” Barry added. Of course, the trucks in the fleet today are very different from the days of the Mammoth Major.

The modern fleet of over 40 vehicles is predominantly based on Kenworth and Isuzu vehicles and comprises prime movers in 19-metre and 25-metre B-double and short B-train applications as well as rigid tippers coupled to three-axled and four-axled dog trailers. For specific applications there are two 8x4 rigids, one operating as a crane truck and the other as a conventional tipper, and more recently the fleet has been joined by a 10x4 Isuzu rigid tipper. For local home delivery activities Turtle Landscapes operates an extensive fleet of over twenty 4x2 tippers, the majority of which are Isuzu. These all operate as light truck rigids with GVMs from 5.5 tonnes. The Kenworth brand holds the position of being the flagship of the fleet, and there’s a mixture of models ranging from new SAR day-cab models and K200 cabovers, many of which are powered by the latest Cummins ISXe5 engines rated at 600 hp and matched to 18-speed Fuller Roadranger manual transmissions. The next step downwards in terms of payload and configuration are the workhorses that toil tirelessly each day delivering anything and everything to local customers. “The majority of the delivery fleet is based on the Isuzu product, with 4x2 and 6x4 units in plentiful supply, leading up to the largest Isuzu in the fleet, a 10x4 rigid tipper,” said Barry. “Every truck has its own personal name. We have Mork and Mindy, Bonnie and Clyde, Tom and Gerry and Rhonda and Ketut, named after the actors in the insurance company advert on TV. We even named two trucks in recognition of Steve Irwin the crocodile hunter, with Bindi and Crikey,” added Barry.

CLEAN LIVING Despite the light-hearted approach to presenting a family-oriented appeal to their customers, there’s nothing lacking when it comes to operating the truck fleet efficiently and safely. “All our trucks are satellite tracked using the PinPoint system to maximise the fleet utilisation. As an added level of protection for the drivers, every vehicle is fitted with a windscreen-mounted camera to record all traffic movements occurring in front of the vehicle when on the road,” said Paul Locock. “Payload and volume are obviously important factors, and units like our 25-metre B-double can carry 120 cubic metres of pine bark. “We currently have three new quad dog trailers on order from Sloanebuilt and these can be operated as 19-metre B-doubles with a gross of 57 tonnes. These will be fitted with EBS and ABS braking systems, but in order to maintain commonality within the fleet we are staying with drum brakes.

“We operate our own workshops, and with three fulltime mechanics we can handle all our maintenance requirements. “From a component perspective we usually specify BPW axles because of their durability and high reliability record. On other trailers we also specify Hendrickson Intraax axles for their ability to contribute to light tare weights. “The 10x4 Isuzu enables us to run bulk loads at 40 cubic metres. A lot of yards prefer rigid vehicles rather than semi-tippers. Apart from the road-going vehicles we also operate 10 wheel loaders, all of which are supplied by Volvo,” added Paul. “We purchase out Kenworth and Isuzu vehicles from the Gilbert & Roach dealership in Huntingwood. The relationship with Gilbert & Roach has been good and we have bought a lot of Kenworths and Isuzu trucks from them through the years,” concluded Paul.

Barry and Paul Locock of Turtle Landscapes (L-R) currently operate six Isuzu NQR 450 tippers, one FTR 900 tipper and a 10x4 Isuzu FYX 200 tipper within the fleet that also includes Kenworth prime movers and rigid trucks.

H

aving driven trucks since the age of 20, Renato Brozzesi (known in cement circles as Spaghetti) is a total convert to the attraction of hauling bulk products in pressure tankers.

For the past 17 years of his total 28 years on the road, Renato has been working as a subcontractor for Boral Industries, recently taking delivery of his latest prime mover, an immaculate Kenworth T909 to haul an equally immaculate Convair pressure tanker owned by Boral. “In the early part of my driving career, like all young guys I wanted to drive interstate. I realised when I got married at 25 years old that being away for long periods of time all over the country was not the perfect recipe for starting a family, and I made the decision to switch to more local work,” said Renato. “Initially, I started work with TNT Bulk Haulage on liquid work and soon found I really liked that side of the business. In those days there were no induction courses for drivers wanting to get into that type of work so I learned the processes by travelling with another driver in my own time to gain the necessary experience of powder tankers.

“I started off with Boral with an early Sterling HN80 powered by a 435 hp CAT motor, then followed two Freightliner Century Class prime movers, also powered by 550 hp CAT engines. Now we have progressed to a new Kenworth T909 powered by a Cummins ISXe5 engine rated at 600 hp. “I think the best answer I heard to the question of why buy a 600 hp prime mover was that they don’t make a 700 hp version! The truck has got the right performance, sufficient interior space for me to be away overnight, and it’s magnificent to drive. “The CAT was a very torquey motor and it was quite a change getting used to the different power delivery of the Cummins ISXe5. Depending on the type of work it’s not uncommon to achieve fuel consumption that matches the smaller capacity engines. “I discussed the specification when ordering the T909 with Bill Anderson of Gilbert & Roach at Huntingwood and we went for a heavier spec’ rating of 106 tonnes, which would provide a better resale when we decided to update again in the future.

“It was a stroke of luck that I heard about a vacancy with Boral, and for the past 17 years I have been working at running my own business as a subcontractor, with my wife Leanne looking after all the paperwork and accounts behind the scenes.

BULK

MOVES For Renato Brozzesi, the bulk tanker industry has proven that specialisation is the key to long-term business as a subcontractor for Boral

10 GILBERT & ROACH APRIL 2016

CLEAN LIVING “The spec’ also includes the 20-Series Fuller Roadranger transmission, and I added an ICEPACK air conditioning unit to make sure I get a proper night’s sleep, even when we have to work out in higher temperatures in country areas. “From a service perspective we are running with approved oil drain intervals extended out to 35,000 km, with servicing requirements completed by Gilbert & Roach. “This truck really has everything I want. It’s got the long sleeper cab with TV, microwave and fridge. The cost of food when out on the road is now so high that I carry nearly everything I need with me. My wife Leanne makes pasta bakes and freezes them in separate containers so they last when I am away. I also take a lot of salad and fruit with me, so from a diet perspective I can keep healthy.

When running at a typical gross combined weight of 44 tonnes, the average payload with a pressure tanker is around 28 tonnes. Mass management can take the gross weight out to 46 tonnes, providing an additional two tonnes payload where applicable. Typical loads include cement and fly ash. “I added a Groeneveld automatic greasing system to reduce time spent on the truck at weekends, and because family time with my wife Leanne and children Anthony and Kayla is very important. I usually have the truck and trailer cleaned by Prestige Truck Wash at Wetherill Park,” said Renato.

“To eat out on the road can easily cost upwards of $300 per week, and, by carrying my own food, the cost is only about $60 per week. Plus it’s a healthier lifestyle,” said Renato.

GILBERT & ROACH

Renato and Leanne Brozzesi with their son Anthony and daughter Kayla is a family that is totally focused on the trucking and transport business.

“Everything about working with Boral is based on safety. All their processes are well established and easy to understand. “The business of truck operation seems to always be getting harder, but if rules change the Boral compliance team keep us updated and are very easy to work with. The big focus is always on safety. The T909 is equipped with EBS and ABS and the trailer is fitted with air suspension running BPW axles with Vigia tyre inflation systems and disc brakes. “We use the Boral approved satellite tracking system by SmartTrack that monitors every movement of the vehicle and validates off-duty time. Using this system the allocations team at Boral can see where we are at any time and maximise the movement of the truck, together with speed and distance, and ensure that we are taking the required statutory breaks. “In order to maintain an independent record of the habit of other drivers I have a Uniden Black Box dashcam mounted in the truck that covers all the forward view of the highway, plus it monitors and records vision from the lefthand-side mirror. I also have another camera mounted on the rear of the trailer that connects to the truck remotely to monitor reversing. “The truck is fitted with Bridgestone 295/80R drive tyres, but I tend to use Double Coin 11R22.5 for the drive axle and trailer tyre fitment. Double Coin provides a full roadside assistance support package at a very reasonable additional cost for a 12-month period that provides a lot of peace of mind in the event of a tyre failure. Ringtread Tyre Service of Ingleburn provides all our tyre requirements, which give us tremendous support,” concluded Renato. 12 GILBERT & ROACH APRIL 2016

CONCRETE DAF CF85 makes its contribution to the world of concrete

W

in our veins

ith a fleet of 30 vehicles, Azzurri Concrete of Wetherill Park is proud to claim that when it comes to high-pressure concrete pumping the company reckons it’s the best in the business.

“We’ve got concrete in our veins,” said a company spokesperson. “We prepare our own slabs and the we complete the pour. “In the smaller vehicle category we have our fleet of Isuzu’s that carry formwork etc., but when it comes to the high-pressure pumping we have three DAF units that are spectacular,” he added. The three DAF concrete pumper units are based on the DAF CF85 with a 460 hp, 12.9-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged and intercooled PACCAR diesel engine. Transmission options include the ZF 12-speed AS Tronic, the 16-speed ZF manual or automated manual AS Tronic, or the Eaton 18-speed manual gearbox.

14 GILBERT & ROACH APRIL 2016

With a GVM of 40 tonnes, this 8x4 features twin 9-tonne-rated front axles and a 26-tonne-rated bogie drive featuring hub reduction axles. Disc brakes are standard together with the Electronic Braking System (EBS). Tyre matching for the weight rating sees the front axles using Continental 315/80R22.5 sizes on the drive axles and 385/65R22.5 sizing on both steer axles. With a 6.7-metre wheelbase, and a capacity of 18 tonnes for the front axles and 26 tonnes for the drive axles, the DAF provides a unique base for high-pressure line pumping.

CLEAN LIVING A spokesperson for DAF Trucks Australia said one of the advantages of using the DAF chassis was the ease of adding bodywork because of the completely flat top chassis rails. “The bodybuilder module is easy to work with for the suppliers of equipment such as concrete pumping. The chassis comes complete with pto wiring and integral air supply, he added. For Azzurri Concrete the three DAF CF85s differ through offering a variation of boom lengths of 38 metres, 44 metres and 51 metres. The concrete pumping equipment is supplied either by Transcrete or Flowcrete Australia. The attractive tare weight of the DAF unit enables the fitment of extended boom high-pressure pumping equipment while staying easily within the gross vehicle weight of 40 tonnes and an overall length of under 12 metres.

GILBERT & ROACH

Founded in Australia in 1982, Flowcrete has nearly 35 years of experience having developed and manufactured a range of concrete pumping equipment, including truck-mounted pumps with capacities of 20 cu.m up to 200 cu.m per hour. As NSW sales manager for Flowcrete, Jeff Halliday commented: “The 38-metre boom unit we supplied to Azzurri and fitted to the DAF CF85 is a high-pressure unit with twin hydraulic pumps capable of pumping consistently at 180 cubic metres per hour.” A spokesperson for Transcrete, which supplied the concrete pumping units fitted to the additional two other DAF CF85s in the Azzurri fleet, commented on the ease of fitment of the equipment to the DAF product. “For this industry we are able to complete this installation to create a 51-metre boom extension within a 12-metre overall vehicle length. It’s very compact and is easy to manoeuvre in tight city streets, and complies with the road rules in all states. “Pumping capacity is 150 cubic metres per hour with pressures of up to 76 bar. With this equipment we can reach a full height of 51 metres using five stages with a roll-fold RZ unit. The first, second and third stages all use a roll-fold while the fourth stage works on the Z principle,” he said. The three DAF CF85s in the Azzurri Concrete fleet were supplied by Gilbert and Roach, the Kenworth and DAF Trucks specialists of Huntingwood.

During the 1990’s, the company changed its focus to concentrate on being a specialised remanufacturer of truck transmissions and differentials. This new direction enabled the company to supply to the industry a complete range of gearing and associated parts to service transmissions and differentials. New transmissions and differentials are also offered, adding to the extensive range of options available.

“If we can receive the unit first thing in the morning we can usually have it completed for pick up or delivery by the close of business on the same day,” said Paul Smith. “One of our great strengths is that we hold parts in-house for just about any make of manual or automated manual gearbox or differential.

Managed by directors Paul and David Smith, the numberone factor in the company’s approach to customer service is that, wherever possible, Truck Transmissions provides a same day, strip, quote and rebuild service for virtually any brand of gearbox or differential.

GILBERT & ROACH “We handle complete rebuilds for all light, medium and heavy commercial trucks and buses, even for brands that date back to the days of Bedford, Foden, ERF and others from years gone by. As a typical example, if a farmer has a 45-year-old International with a Number 2 Eaton diff, we can help him out,” added Paul. In order to support the company’s high standards of customer service, Truck Transmissions Pty Ltd. relies on a fleet of 17 Isuzu D-MAX utes and cab/chassis units to operate throughout the greater Sydney area picking up and delivering gearboxes and transmissions to its customers. “We changed to Isuzu D-Max units for our PUD (pick up and delivery) fleet three years ago after completing extensive research ourselves into the reliability and durability of the different makes of utes available on the Australian market,” said Paul Smith.

“In the past we operated a fleet of utes from another well-known brand, but we had various issues including that of fuel economy. “The criteria for moving to D-MAX was value for money, reliability and fuel economy. These were the big factors we were looking for. Our selection of the D-MAX came from our experience in the past on Isuzu products, plus our research on what people are driving and their experiences in the past. “In our normal work we deal with Gilbert & Roach with the Isuzu truck product, and, as such, by choosing the D-MAX we were able to flow our business straight to them. In making our purchase decision we only compared the D-MAX with other makes rather than looking for the lowest financial deal.

CLEAN LIVING UTE Paul Smith, director of Truck Transmissions Pty Ltd. with part of the fleet of 17 Isuzu D-Max Utes and cab/chassis vehicles that operate the company pick up and delivery fleet.

“We operate 15 dual-cab D-MAX utes plus a further 2 cab/chassis units fitted with trays. A typical annual distance travelled by the crew-cab utes is usually in the region of 30,000 km. The tray back D-MAXs are on the road all the time, travelling upwards of 100,000 km each year. “We find the quality of the D-MAX is certainly comparable to other brands, and their total cost of operation over the five years we keep them in the fleet is much less. It’s a small truck made by a big truck company. It has the reliability of a bigger engine that was detuned, and the strength of the driveline is another important factor. “All but four of our D-MAX fleet are fitted with manual gearboxes, with the remainder being fitted with the five-speed automatic transmission. All are going well and we service them in our own workshop with oil drain intervals and filter replacement every 10,000 km,” said Paul. GILBERT & ROACH APRIL 2016
