home & away Home & Away is een thematisch serie waarbij het Nederlandse en internationale publiek samen met kunstenaars, componisten, dichters, vertalers, academici en performers nadenken over wat het betekent om weg te zijn of thuis blijven. Het programma zelf reist tussen West Den Haag en steden als Leiden, Sao Paulo en Bangkok om van daaruit het begrip thuis en haar invloed op kunst productie en consumptie te bevragen.
Home & Away is a thematic program series brings together Dutch and international audiences with artists, composers, poets, translators, academics, and performers to think about what it is to be away, or stay at home. The program itself travels between its home at West Den Haag cities such as Leiden, Sao Paulo & Bangkok to extend the question of home and how this impacts on both art production and consumption. double jeopardy Double Jeopardy is een tweemaandelijks, provocerend filmprogramma. Telkens kijken we een avondlang naar twee films van existentieel uitdagende en gewaagde filmmakers. Uit deze eeuw en de vorige eeuw, variërend van trage bioscoopfilm tot desktop-documentaire — door de juxtapositie van verschillende kritische stellingen, persoonlijke speculatie en de juiste filmaantekeningen op oude plakbriefjes, heeft Peter Taylor de films op uitgesproken en compromisloze wijze geselecteerd. Double Jeopardy is a provocative bi-monthly public film program. Over one evening, we’ll look at two films by two separate existentially challenging, breast baring and risk-taking moving image makers. From this century and the last, from slow-cinema to desktop documentary — through the juxtaposition of varying critical positions, personal conjecture and suitably sticky screening notes, Peter Taylor frames the films in distinct and uncompromising ways. musical material Reeks bijeenkomsten op zondagmiddagen, waarbij (inter)nationale gasten hun werk presenteren en een gesprek aangaan. Specialisten op het gebied van muziek, kunst en/of beschouwing toetsen en bespreken, in een intieme setting, bijzonderheden in hun vak. Waarbij grenzen van traditionele disciplines onbelangrijk zijn en expertise uitgewisseld wordt. Een gespreksleider geeft een flexibel podium aan makers waar naast persoonlijke, experimentele en onverwachte presentaties vooral de dialoog voorop staat. Musical Material is een samenwerking tussen Rewire en West. Series of meetings on Sunday afternoons, during which national and international guests present their work and enter into dialogue. Specialists in the fields of music, art and/or reflection, test and discuss the details of their profession in an intimate setting. During which the borders of traditional disciplines are insignificant and expertise will be interchanged. A discussion leader will provide a flexible platform to producers, where, besides personal, experimental and unexpected presentations, the dialogue forms centre stage. tentoonstelling: patrick bernatchez, lost in time In de Grote Kerk, het oudste gebouw van de stad Den Haag, presenteert het Volkspaleis de Nederlandse première van de monumentale filminstallatie Lost in Time van de Canadese kunstenaar Patrick Bernatchez. Het werk neemt de kijker mee op een abstracte reis door het brein. Bernatchez heeft vier jaar aan dit project gewerkt en met rijke, visuele herhalingen weerspiegelt hij het bewuste en het onbewuste en sleept hij de kijker tegelijkertijd mee in een wonderlijk, kaal landschap. We volgen de tocht van een ridder en zijn paard, beiden met integraalhelm op het hoofd, en sluiten ons aan bij hun wetenschappelijke expeditie. De tijd vertraagt in de Antarctische omgeving. De film springt naar een andere tijd en toont een wetenschappelijk laboratorium waar een mansgroot ijsblok langzaam wegsmelt. Terwijl de film zich verder ontvouwt, horen we de stem van de Franse filosoof en arts Henri Laborit, die de kijker herinnert aan zijn sterfelijkheid terwijl hij praat over determinisme, verval, angst en vluchten voor de dood. In de laatste scène verschijnt het lichaam van een wezen dat uit een andere tijd lijkt te komen, een bevrijding. Geïnspireerd op de Goldbergvariaties van JS Bach, heeft de veelgeprezen Mexicaanse electronica artist Murcof, in samenwerking met het kinderkoor Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal, de soundtrack gecreëerd die dit epische en tragische verhaal begeleidt. Within the majestic hall of the Grote Kerk (Main Church) Den Haag, Volkspaleis presents the mesmerizing film project Lost in Time by Canadian artist Patrick Bernatchez, that takes the viewer on an abstract journey inside our mind. Made over four years, Bernatchez’s rich visual repetition mirrors the conscious and subconscious, whilst submerging the viewer into a strange, barren landscape. Following the voyage of a knight and his horse, both wearing full helmets, the viewer joins them on a scientific expedition. Time slows, as the arctic environment expands space. The film cuts to another moment, and enters a scientific laboratory where a large block of ice slowly melts. As the film unfolds, the voice of the French philosopher and physician Henri Laborit is heard reminding the viewer of their own mortality as he discusses determinism, fear, anxiety, escape from death. The final scene reveals the body of a creature that appears from another time, a liberation. Het is gemakkelijker om de tijd te begrijpen door terug te kijken dan vooruit, om te peilen in welke mate we individueel en gezamenlijk zijn veranderd. 100 years from now verenigt curatoren, wetenschappers, critici, schrijvers en kunstenaars om hun gedachten en ideeën over de toekomst te delen. We stellen de tijdgebonden vraag: hoe zal het er over 100 jaar voor staan met kunst en cultuur? Influenced by the themes presented in the project Lost in Time by Patrick Bernatchez, 100 years from now is a one-day symposium that examines our turbulent relation towards time with a focus on cultural production. It is easier to comprehend time by looking backwards, rather than forward, to gauge how we have changed individually and collectively. 100 years from now gathers curators, scientists, critics, writers, and artists to share their thoughts and vision of the future. In this moment in time we will address the question: where will cultural production and art be 100 years from now?

patrick bernatchez: lost in time
Lost in Time is een nieuwe tentoonstelling van Patrick Bernatchez bij West. Eerder, in 2012, werd een deel van Lost in Time getoond in de vorm van een speciaal horloge waarvan de wijzer één keer rondgaat in 1000 jaar. Dit jaar wordt de laatste fase van Lost in Time gepresenteerd, samen met het werk Chrysalides Empereur. Bernatchez is een beeldend kunstenaar die sterke en dramatische werken creëert en daarbij gebruik maakt van vele media. Hij werkt regelmatig samen met componisten, filmmakers en fotografen, en met een horlogemaker. Het verstrijken van de tijd, de dood en ook het proces van verval en vernieuwing zijn terugkerende onderwerpen in zijn werk. Verwijzingen naar individuele, sociale en kosmische levenscycli zijn in overvloed aanwezig en confronteren ons met onze sterfelijkheid. Lost in Time is a new exhibition by Patrick Bernatchez presented at West. In 2012, an early instalment of Lost In Time was screened, where a special watch in which the needle goes around one time in 1,000 years. This year, the final instalment of Lost In Time is presented alongside Chrysalides Empereur. Bernatchez is a visual artist who creates vivid and dramatic works by using various mediums, regularly collaborating with composers, filmmakers, photograohers and a watchmaker. The passage of time, death as well as the process of decay and renewal are recurring themes in his work. Home & Away #9: The Climb is samengesteld door beeldend kunstenaar Bernd Krauß. Hij zal leiding zal geven aan een cross country tocht door het hele land met halteplaatsen op diverse bestemmingen in Nederland. Doordat we het landschap op verschillende manieren doorkruisen, variërend van klimmen, wandelen, rijden en glijden, worden we geconfronteerd met onverwachte ervaringen. Zo wordt reizen sensorisch en kinesthetisch, maar ook radicaal en vitaal. Home & Away #9: The Climb is devised by artist Bernd Krauß, who will lead on a cross-country tour stopping at various destinations in Dutch lowlands. By experiencing different ways of moving through landscape: from climbing, walking, driving or to gliding, we encounter the unexpected. emily kocken: come–go–stay
Kunstenaar en schrijver Emily Kocken werkt sinds 2000 aan een multidisciplinair oeuvre dat zowel literair, beeldend als performatief is. In 2013 debuteerde zij bij Uitgeverij Querido met de roman Witte Vlag waarin het conflict centraal staat tussen kunstenaar en vrouw, met stervende hond als katalysator. In haar werk introduceert zij nieuw grijs gebied tussen fictie en non-fictie, via meertalige projecten vol unheimische confrontaties. De ritueel geactiveerde wetten van de dialectische dialoog lossen persoonlijke elementen op in complexe taalspelconstructies met een lucide vorm. Speciaal voor West maakt zij Come-Go-Stay, een live performance met als partner een meervoudig bekroonde, hoog intelligente koningspoedel. Hiervoor destilleert zij uit de tekst Sacred Emily van Gertrude Stein codes en imperatieven om deze als commando’s te voeren aan de poedel. Via de evocatieve taal van Stein, zelf een fervent koningspoedelbezitter, wordt een hybride uitwisseling tussen kunstenaar en levend object gestimuleerd. In het kader van de expositie organiseert West, op 8 november,een ‘salon sémiotique’ samen met de kunstenaar en gasten. Since 2000, artist and writer Emily Kocken has been working on a multidisciplinary oeuvre which is literary, expressive as well as performative. In 2013, she made her debut at the publishing house Querido with her novel Witte Vlag (White Flag), in which the conflict between artist and wife forms centre stage, and with a dying dog as catalyst. In her work, she introduces a new grey field between fiction and non-fiction via multilingual projects filled with ominous confrontations. The ritually activated laws of the dialectical dialogue solve personal elements in complex word-play constructions in a
lucid form. For West, she especially created Come-Go-Stay, a live performance with a multi-awarded, highly intelligent standard poodle. For this performance, she deduces codes and imperative moods from the text Sacred Emily by Gertrude Stein and uses these as commands for the poodle. Via the evocative language of Stein — who was a fervent owner of standard poodles herself — a hybrid exchange is stimulated between the artist and a living object. Sinds eind jaren negentig produceert Roc Jiménez de Cisneros ‘computermuziek voor hooligans’; die is geïnspireerd op geometrie, metafysica, noise, kosmologie en rave muziek. Hij zal een lezing geven met de titel Like a surface waiting for holes en een performance. Since the late nineties, Roc Jiménez de Cisneros has been producing ‘computer music for hooligans’, inspired by geometry, metaphysics, noise, cosmology and rave culture. De documentaire over het voorlaatste optreden van komiek Lenny Bruce observeert niet alleen zijn genialiteit maar ook zijn uitputting en ondergang, terwijl Shirley Clarke’s film van hetzelfde jaar Jason Holiday toont in gevecht met de camera en de crew om een flatteerend (zelf)portret van een winnaar te maken. Dit zijn films van twee zeer charismatische beeldenstormers die, in strijd met de waarden en normen van de tijd waarin zij leefden, vastbesloten waren om hun leven, coûte que coûte, op hun eigen manier te blijven leiden. Footage documenting Lenny Bruce’s penultimate performance observes not only his genius but his exhaustion and demise whilst Shirley Clarke’s film of the same year depicts Jason Holiday battling camera and crew to make a likeness of himself that he finds pleasing, and winning. These are portraits of two highly charismatic iconoclasts who found themselves at odds with the values and norms of the culture they lived in but whom were determined to carry on living in their own way regardless. remco torenbosch: distributors
Distributors (Distributeurs) is een tentoonstelling en symposium waarvoor werken en sprekers worden verzameld die distributiesystemen behandelen die verband houden met productie. De tentoonstelling biedt een perspectief op de materiaalstroom en de onzekerheid van het onderwerp door afwisselend gebruik van objecten, installatie, video en archiefmateriaal. De presentatie wordt zelfreflectief door te bevragen hoe de dissociatie van kapitaal afwijkt van kunstproductie zoals deze in een door geld beheerste mondiale economie wordt gerealiseerd. Het symposium vindt plaats op donderdagavond 8 december 2015. Sprekers uit diverse beroepsgroepen zullen worden samengebracht om te discussiëren over distributie, waarde, werk en culturele productie. De Nederlandse kunstenaar Remco Torenbosch is de curator van Distributors.
Distributors is an exhibition and symposium that gathers works and speakers that address systems of distribution in relation to production. Ranging from objects, installation, video, and archival material the exhibition takes a perspective on the flow of material and the precarity of the subject. The presentation becomes self-reflexive by questioning how the dissociation of capital differs from (art)production as realized in a financialized global economy. On Tuesday evening 8 December 2015, speakers from various professions will be brought together to discuss distribution, value, labour and cultural production. Twee films die met een tussentijd van 10 jaar in Noord-Ierland zijn geschoten. De een is een wervelende uitbarsting van Super 8, waarbij Belfast in exorbitante flitsen van punk en pop, kenmerkend voor de jaren 70 in beeld wordt gebracht. De andere is een nauwgezet onderzoek naar geweld waar de slachtoffers onlosmakelijk zijn verbonden met de aanvallers. Dit zijn films die je uit elkaar scheuren, om je vervolgens weer met beide benen op de grond te zetten. Two films shot in Northern Ireland ten years apart from one another. One a whirling burst of Super 8, capturing Belfast’s exuberant flash of punk and pop that bookended the 70s, the other a meticulous ‘examination of violence where the victims are inseparable from the assailants. Home & Away #11: The High Rise observeert het huiselijke en commerciele aspect van vertikaal wonen, en hoe kunstenaars en architecten daarmee omgaan. As cities battle with the loss of available land to house their expanding populations, urban planners and building developers are looking to sky and sustainable living. winter school of discontent
Geïnspireerd door kunst, activisme en de academische wereld, bundelt West de krachten met het Political Arts Initiative om deze winter ruimte te maken voor de School of Discontent. Door te experimenteren met het ‘gemeenschappelijke’ op basis van fysieke, psychologische, fenomenologische, politieke en praktische dimensies, onderzoekt deze experimentele winterschool de noodzakelijke maar wisselvallige omstandigheden waaronder een gemeenschap zich kan ontwikkelen. De verschillende thematische aanknopingspunten van de school bieden een frisse insteek om na te denken over en betrokken te zijn met de gemeenschappelijkheid en collectiviteit, door speels op elkaar en onze omgeving afgestemd te blijven. De winterschool bestaat uit een week vol avondsessies, variërend van performance tot psychogeografie en voedselchoreografie; middagworkshops met vaardigheidstrainingen, zoals sociolinguïstiek, vocale projectie en mediatactieken; discussies tijdens lunchtijd; een groepsproject en openbare presentatiedag en op afspraak gesprekken met organisatoren. Drawing inspiration and resources from art, activism, and academia, West joins forces with the Political Arts Initiative to make space this winter for a school of discontent. Experimenting with the commons along physical, psychological, phenomenological, political, and practical dimensions, this experiential winter school explores the necessary but precarious conditions under which a community can emerge. The diverse thematic entry points of the school offer fresh avenues to think about and engage with commonality and collectivity by staying playful and attuned to ourselves and our environment. The winter school consists of a week with evening sessions, ranging from performance to psycho geography and food choreography; afternoon skills workshops, including sociolinguistics, vocal projection, and media tactics; lunch-time discussions; a group-project and public presentation day and coffee conversations with conveners by appointment.

West is een instelling die zich focust op de meest recente en relevante internationale ontwikkelingen op het gebied van de beeldende kunst en deze binnen en buiten Den Haag een adequaat platform geeft. West wil actuele kunst de ruimte en mogelijkheden bieden die deze nodig heeft en nieuwe producties stimuleren, en middels een brede dialoog deze producties in een sociale, maatschappelijke context plaatsen. Om dat te bereiken organiseert West jaarlijks een reeks projecten in eigen huis, een manifestatie buitenshuis en een serie projecten in het buitenland. Lezingen, presentaties, performances en discussies ondersteunen het tentoonstellingsbeleid met een theoretische basis. Publicaties, documentaires en de website www.westdenhaag.nl verzorgen de basis van onze activiteiten. Situated in a carefully, renovated seventeenth century townhouse alongside one of The Hague’s picturesque canals, art centre West has been developing an international program of exhibitions showing artworks that challenge the conditioning of the public’s perception of art. West does not strive to please the public. In the main gallery space, consisting of three rooms on different sizes and atmosphere and a side program West combines the work of Dutch and foreign artists with an emphasis on radical site specific work and installations. West introduces artists it views as important but not (yet) very well known to the Netherlands and conversely promotes its artists abroad. Lectures, presentations, performances and discussions underpin the exhibition policy with a theoretical basis. A series of brochures, documentaries and the website www.westdenhaag.nl complete the activities that bring the different aspects of West together. 1 2
