WRAPPING UP

2016

The Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation had an amazing 2016. We've had successful ventures, initiatives and events and would like to thank the Fort Gordon Community for all your support and participation. Here's a recap of some of our events!

Earth Faire & Upcycled Art Show – This was the first ever Earth Faire! DFMWR and DPW Environmental came together in celebration of Earth Faire and provided a Birds of Prey demonstration, a pancake breakfast, a 5k run, storybook walk, and the Upcycled Art Show. Fort Gordon Recycling hosted the Upcycled Art Show, encouraging people of all ages across Fort Gordon to craft whatever their hearts desired from post-consumer materials. There were 21 entries from children age 5 to 14. Independence Day Celebration – The Independence Day Celebration had a special guest catering to over 40,000 patrons with tons of food, fun and activities. A big "thank you" to Cole Swindell for a great concert presented by MWR & Kicks 99, followed by an amazing firework display.

Father Daughter Butterfly Ball – Fathers and daughters enjoyed dancing, food, crafts and a lot of sweets. All 200 tickets were sold in the 1st two weeks on sale, so don't miss your chance to get tickets for the next Father Daughter Butterfly Ball scheduled for this spring!

2016 Unit Recycling Challenges – In 2016, units delivered over 70,000lbs (or 35 tons) of recyclable materials for the challenges; 30,000lbs over the total delivered in calendar year 2015. The efforts of the soldiers in 2016 has diverted over 350 cubic meters of landfill space and saved the installation money. Each winning unit received $500 in Unit Funds and was recognized at the Installation Quarterly Award Ceremony.

8 | FYI WINTER 2017

Masters Lottery – Each year SSD purchases a specific number of badges to the Masters which are resold via a lottery to eligible active duty military stationed at Fort Gordon. In 2016, 100 tickets were purchased and more participants registered than in past years.

Hunter Hayes – In the spring, MWR hosted a free concert for the Fort Gordon Community with Hunter Hayes. A fun social media contest was incorporated which gave the community the opportunity to enter to win "Meet & Greet" passes.

Give Aways – Bingo Palace gave away new bonus prizes this year to winners including 3 brand new cars, a riding lawnmower, a gas grill and 3- $1,000 gift cards in addition to all the wonderful cash prizes won in through regular programs.

Christmas Festival – Each year wraps up with Army Community Services (ACS) hosting Trees For Troops, an event which gives out between 400 to 500 FREE Christmas Trees to Active Duty military. The event is followed by a free evening of raffles, tree lighting and fun crafts being made with the family. Of course it's always nice to take pictures with Santa! Amazing Race – Teams of four raced around the installation in competition with each other. Some stops included physical challenges and/or photo opportunities. Teams utilized their vehicles and, in some cases, went by foot to designated areas to retrieve requested information. Clues provided at various agencies and organizations took teams to the next destination or directed them to perform a task, either together or by a single member. These team-building challenges introduced service members, civilians and their families to resources available on the installation in a fun and exciting way.

CSM BRYANT TALKS MWR Crystal Tyson, Editor

A native of Monticello, Florida, Command Sergeant Major Charlie Bryant enlisted in the United States Army in June of 1990, and attended basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Following his graduation of Advanced Individual Training (AIT), CSM Bryant continued on to Fort Gordon, Georgia, where he was trained as a combat Signaler (31K). CSM Bryant is married to the former Kathy M. Harrison of Tallahassee, FL., and together have three children named Kori, 1LT Charles Bryant and Quinicka Bryant. In this short interview, we asked CSM Bryant about his 26 years in the military and how MWR has affected his time. Is there any history between Fort Gordon and yourself? Fort Gordon is in my blood and has made me a true Signaleer. I am both humbled and honored to return as the Garrison Command 12 | FYI WINTER 2017

Sergeant Major. I’ve been connected to Fort Gordon since 1990 when I attended my Advanced Individual Training (AIT). I’ve had the privilege of coming back in 1994 and then serving here from 1999-2004 in the Threat Office and later as an instructor for the 25U course. Fort Gordon will always be in our family because our daughter Quinicka graduated high school here and our son, Kori, was born here. What is your role as the Garrison CSM? I have not only a responsibility, but an unqualified duty to provide for the health, welfare, and morale of everyone on post. I also am charged with ensuring a high quality of life and support services for everyone here. As CSM, I am the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Garrison Commander. As such, I work with him closely to ensure we are meeting the needs of our civilians, service members and their families. Some of these initiatives include MWR programs, soldier support

activities, community engagements, civilian employee development, conflict resolutions, and establishing a command relation with the MACOMs. Of upmost importance are any issues service members may have in their barracks. As I said during my Change of Responsibility, "...it is important to hear about issues from soldiers so we can fix them". Are you familiar and active with the B.O.S.S. program? Absolutely! This is a critical program that allows us to reach out to single soldiers to help them take full advantage of what is here. Is there a push to revitalize the program on the installation? Yes, I have brought a few ideals to our B.O.S.S. President, and I think this will motivate more of our single soldiers to participate in our programs. I am going to work closely with the B.O.S.S. program to ensure that it is enlarged and offers even more opportunities for soldiers. Have you utilized Fort Gordon’s MWR activities, programs or facilities? Fort Gordon is like no other post I’ve been to. The MWR activities are simply some of the best that the Army offers and we take full advantage of EVERYTHING! We have family night at the bowling center, use the fitness centers on post and all the activities that Pointes West Army Resort provides. Most importantly, fishing on the lakes. I enjoy the lakes and fishing the most here. It is some of the best fishing I’ve ever done, and I’ve fished in a lot of places. Being a Floridian, I love the water. Overall, Fort Gordon is a tremendous place to raise a family. Which is why my lovely bride, Kathy, of 26 years and wonderful son Kori, who is now in his freshman year at Grovetown High School, were so happy to return.

What are their favorite MWR activities, programs or facilities? Again, EVERYTHING! We have family nights on post and are able to do so many fun things. It really brings our family closer together. So overall, how do you feel we (DFMWR) are doing? Looking across the board and being objective, I believe we are doing extremely well. Do you have plans for the installation’s MWR that you can discuss? We are exploring several different initiatives revolving around our service members and families to increase their quality of life and to make sure they are utilizing and know about all the great things Fort Gordon has to offer. Are there MWR programs you’ve had at previous duty stations you wish to bring here? Yes, other locations have mini golf and paintball obstacle courses on post, trips to various events for a nominal fee and other events of this nature.

RULES OF THE ROAD Travis Martinez, Intern

All Georgia residents with a license should know the rules of the road. Especially the basic rules of the road to receive a license or a permit. You can get a permit in Georgia at the age of 15 as long as you pass the vision test and the knowledge exam. You must have your permit for a year and a day before you can go for the driving test. Some parents do not know, but here in Georgia, if your child is seeking a driver’s license, they must have a minimum of 40 hours of supervised driving experience with at least 6 hours of driving at night. Another fact that most parents do not know is their child must have the ADAP or EADAP certificate of completion, which has to be obtained at school. All applicants under the age of 18 not enrolled in school must provide a high school diploma, GED, special diploma, certification of high school completion, proof of enrollment in a GED program or a postsecondary school. When you first get your divers license you cannot drive between the times of midnight and five in

the morning. Please note when you first earn your license you cannot have any non-direct family in the car with you for 6 months. What will really throw you for a loop are the driving rules on Fort Gordon. In the state of Georgia you can drive at the age of 16, but to drive on Fort Gordon, you have to be 18. Drivers are not able to be on the phone at all while on Fort Gordon. The normal speed limit around Georgia is 45 MPH, but the max speed limit is 35 MPH on any part on Fort Gordon. When you are around soldiers they always have the right of away and the speed limit is 10 MPH. In Georgia, your headlights must be on 30 minutes before sunrise and after sunset, but on Fort Gordon, your car headlights must be on at all times. These are just some of the driving rules in Georgia and on Fort Gordon. Below are some other rules that you may not be aware of.

RULES ON FORT GORDON Devices which release smoke, produce excessive odors, or produce excessive noise are prohibited.

Bicyclists required to wear a helmet at all times.

The display or use of any oscillating, flashing, rotating or strobe lighting, and displaying or using any siren, except on authorized emergency vehicles or as a warning device are prohibited.

Skateboards, roller blades, roller skates, and scooters are prohibited in darkness.
