EDITOR’S NOTES A FORT GORDON FAMILY AND MWR PUBLICATION

WINTER 2016

|

FORTGORDON.COM

Crystal Tyson, Editor

Ahhhh! It’s that time of year again. As I sit at my desk thinking of how fast the new year came, I think of all it brings...new beginnings, resolutions, goal setting...Ugh! I then realize it’s a time of lying to myself about how I will get “FIT”! I’ve fell victim to this every year, telling myself, “this is the year” I’d finally do what I set out to do, loose weight, eat right, etc.! And every year, I’ve come up short. This year I propose not to make a goal at all! This year I will reach for success at being fit - mentally, physically and emotionally! We can all do so by ensuring our happiness, workout when we can, enjoy a play or two and read novels throughout the year. The word “fit” is not only in the physical sense, it also has to do with our mental and emotional state. Concentrate on the road of happiness and allow MWR to be a part of the journey. MWR affords so many opportunities to get & stay “FIT”. This issue of the magazine focuses on the Recreation Division and includes the many things happening within the MWR Community! Remember there are many roads that can lead to success! Happy New Year all!

FACILITY FOCUS

Jerry “Swami” Swain, Double Eagle Disc Golf Course Manager

Disc Golf has arrived to Fort Gordon with great success! “What is Disc Golf?” Disc Golf is often referred to as “Frisbee Golf ” and is played similar to traditional golf. Instead of clubs and golf balls, discs are thrown into a target or basket. Courses typically are comprised of 9-18 holes, but may have more or less, dependent on the amount of space available. Fort Gordon’s Double Eagle Disc Golf Course has installed 18 holes, with 9 holes dedicated to the US Army and 9 dedicated to the US Air Force. In the very near future, another 18hole course will be installed representing 9 holes for the US Marine Corps and 9 for the US Navy. The courses were designed by GySgt James Meek Jr. USMC (RET). There are benches and trash cans located on every hole as well as cement tee pads with tee signs. For your convenience, there are also port-o-lets located at Army 1 and 12 | FYI WINTER 2016

Air Force 1 holes. When playing on our Fort Gordon Course, Jerry “Swami” Swain is the person to keep an eye out for. His evident love and passion for Disc Golf has afforded him the opportunity of becoming the Manager of the Disc Golf Course. Peoples interest to disc golf is multifaceted; one being the significant inexpensive cost to play. Most disc golf courses are free in charge, similar to Fort Gordon’s, and located in public parks across the world. Fort Gordon is very fortunate to be located in an area where the International Disc Golf Center (IDGC) and several other disc golf parks are located. Surrounding courses such as Patriots Park in Grovetown, Pendleton King Park and Lake Olmstead in Augusta, Hippodrome and Riverview in North Augusta and Aiken having a few courses established with two more in the works, allow people of all ages to

participate in this sport. Young and old can play together. Active players range from 10 to 70.

that call it home! Most importantly, always inform someone that you are playing on the course in case of an emergency.

One of the most notable aspects of playing disc golf are the health benefits. You play at your own pace. Your entire body is involved using low impact activity but it’s still fun and challenging. It seems to be an easy sport to learn for many. It’s an opportunity for family or friends to rid themselves of technology and get back to nature, enjoying quality time together.

The course is open to all that have access to the installation. Civilians without proper Military or DoD IDs have to go through the Welcome Center, located at Gate 1, to obtain a day pass to come on the installation. If you join the Fort Gordon Disc Golf Club you may apply for a membership pass for $20. Included is access to the installation, a Dri-Fit Double Eagle Disc Golf shirt, a Double Eagle Disc Golf towel, and a bag tag. For more information please call Jerry “Swami” Swain 706-791-6433 or email jerry.l.swain.naf@mail.mil.

Keep in mind that this sport doesn’t require someone to be present while playing, as with traditional golf. Safety can be an issue on the course. Consider wearing sun block on sunny days and drink plenty of water or sport drinks to stay hydrated. Fort Gordon’s course has elevation changes not suitable for wheels. Be aware that the wooded areas have deer and other animals
