History: On April 6, 1917, the United States of America marked the 100th anniversary of joining World War I's Allied Powers (comprised of 25 nations; predominantly Great Britain, France, Italy and Russia). Territories and boundaries were the major issues leading toward the war, as they [territory and boundaries] continued to cause many more wars in US history. However, the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria in June of 1914 ultimately caused the Central Powers (Austria-Hungary, Germany, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria) to declare war one month later. Many Americans, as well as the President, were against entering the war, in hopes to remain neutral. While there are different beliefs as to why the US decided to enter the war, the constant damage, sinking 6 | FYI SPRING 2017
and attacks of unarmed American vessels, between February of 1915 and March of 1917, may have been "the straw(s) that broke the camel’s back." Finally on April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson requested Congress approve his declaration of war against Germany. Just four days later, Americans were a part of what is also known as the Great War. Tradition: Traditionally, wars have been fought by land, sea and air; however, with the military leaning heavily on cyber becoming the future of war prevention, the tactics of war have been rewritten. According to History.com, over 8 million lives were lost in WWI. This new tactic of cyber warfare should decrease the amount of lives lost. The missions of Cyber Command are to direct and conduct integrated electronic warfare, information

and cyberspace operations as authorized, or directed, to ensure freedom of action in and through cyberspace and the information environment, and to deny the same to our adversaries. Fort Gordon has become the "Home of Cyber". Service members of all branches are attending schools in this area to learn all that our military has to offer on cyber tactics. Pride: I am proud to be a part of a family with a long history of military service members. The pride of being an American and serving our country has been passed down for generations. Not only does the US have one of the largest militaries in the world, but our record is among the greatest. The US has been a part of many wars. Of those, 12 have been major, involving several different countries, with others being fought on our "own soil".
There has yet to be a time where the US has been on the loosing side of a war. Here's to hoping there never will be! War Gardens: Supporting WWI Kathleen Duncan, Recreation Specialist
along with Rationing Stamps and Cards, to reduce pressure on the public food supply. Besides indirectly aiding the war effort, these gardens were also considered a civil morale booster. Gardeners felt empowered by their contribution of labor and were ultimately rewarded by the produce grown in their gardens. This led to Victory Gardens being a part of daily life on the home front! 1916 will be remembered as a year of worldwide crop failures. Over 30,000,000 WWI soldiers were farmers before being drafted into the armed forces. The loss of farmers caused devastation and desertion across US croplands. To make matters worse, the war caused an influx of submarines which interfered with international shipping. In March 1917, prior to the US entering the war, Charles Lathrop Pack came up with the idea of War Gardens. Pack believed the gardens would increase the food supply without causing an increase in the "use of land already cultivated, labor already engaged in agricultural work, time devoted to other necessary occupations, and of transportation facilities which were already inadequate to the demands made upon them..." War Gardens, also known as Victory Gardens or Food Gardens for Defense, were primarily vegetable, fruit, and herb gardens planted at private residences and public parks in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Germany during World War I and World War II. The Gardens were used,

DISC GOLF Jerry "Swami" Swain Jr., Disc Golf Course Manager
After being open for only one year, the Fort Gordon Disc Golf Course has had thousands of rounds played on the Army/ Air Force course. Since its opening, it has received rave reviews from the local disc golf community. The newly completed Marine/Navy course, an Advanced to Pro skill level course, has added two additional holes, making the much anticipated course a 20 hole disc golf course. The Fort Gordon Disc Golf Course has drawn a lot of interest throughout the community. So much so, the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) recently announced the 2017 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships will be held at Fort Gordon on the newlyinstalled Marine/Navy portion of the Fort Gordon Disc Golf Courses, and on the W.R. Jackson course at the International Disc Golf Center, located in Wildwood Park in Appling. The tournament is sanctioned PDGA. PDGA Events Manager, Mike Downes stated, "The PDGA is thrilled to showcase the community at Fort Gordon and the Marine/Navy portion of the Fort Gordon disc golf course during this event. To say we are lucky to be working 10 | FYI SPRING 2017
with some outstanding volunteers is a huge understatement. The Fort Gordon Disc Golf Club, as well as the Augusta Disc Golf Association, have consistently embodied the principles employed by the PDGA and we are excited and confident in their ability to host an outstanding Major event." Tournament Director, Zach Shafer, stated "Augusta is a great place to visit and recreate. We have an ever-budding disc golf scene here and we are thrilled to host this premier PDGA event. Myself, along with the rest of the PDGA Staff, the Fort Gordon Disc Golf Club, and the Augusta Disc Golf Association, are confident that we will put together an unforgettable experience for our players and spectators." The tournament will be held from June 21-24, 2017. Spectators are welcome, free of charge. Is your child looking to make a little money this summer? Register your child for this training in First Aid/CPR and techniques to become a great sitter. School Age Center has introduced the Character Counts Program. Children earn a character buck for displaying good citizenship and overall good character at the program. Children turn in their character bucks to Mr. Corey, and on the 1st Friday of each month, SAC opens the Character Counts store where children are allowed to spend their bucks.

In 2016, Army Emergency Relief awarded $1.8 million in scholarships to 1,063 spouses and $6.8 million to 3,095 dependent children for the 2016/2017 school year. Of those AER scholarships, 17 Fort Gordon area Army Spouses were awarded $27,375 and 64 dependent children of our Fort Gordon Soldiers received scholarships totaling $145,200, and are currently attending college with help from Army Emergency Relief.

The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her.
