Family and MWR & Dick’s Sporting Goods presents:

Days to Get Fit

Crystal Tyson, Family and MWR Staff Writer

90 Days to Get Fit started as an idea for me to achieve a personal fitness goal! I never would have imagined my personal goal turning into an initiative for the entire community to get together and have fun getting fit mentally, physically and emotionally. But it did! I’m proud to say our #MWRFit Team has done a fantastic job. With a little under 100 participants, we’ve all accomplished feats that were beyond my imagination and made some good friends too! It is believed that the United States is one of the unhealthiest countries in the world. I found it hard as a working mother to find time in the day to workout, eat healthy, and spend quality time with my family. With the convenience of fast food restaurants, it’s just easier to grab and go. Unfortunately, this became my reality

– so during my 90 days, I found easier ways to prepare healthy snacks and meals that were healthy and fulfilling, and dedicated more time to exercise, some of which could be done in the office or in the home. I not only joined the 90 Days group, but also discovered other small groups of people just like me. One of the groups is actually geared towards involving parents as well as their children, and all of the activities help with family fitness. The support within the groups seems to make the challenge of taking time to work on yourself and your family easier. Get Fit participants have shared success stories from weight loss to one young lady discovering things about her spouse she never knew. One participant is now working on a healthy eating snack guide, while others plan to start different group fitness classes in their area. The initiative

has also impacted some children participants, showing them the fun of participating in physical activities, the importance of setting goals and the rewarding feeling of achieving those goals. Additionally, I was excited to hear so many of our participants say that the 90 Days to Get Fit challenge helped them prepare for the Dare to Tri – Sprint Triathlon. This year, our participants received some outstanding prizes thanks to the generous support of our Family and MWR programs and facilities – we can’t thank them enough for their support! We were able to provide opportunities for winners to enjoy some Family and MWR programs that they didn’t even know existed on Fort Gordon.

Although this challenge is over, it doesn’t stop here. Maintaining your physical, mental, and emotional health should be an everyday priority. Make time for you and your family to stay fit in all three categories. If nothing else, have fun spending family time together. Thanks to all who participated and keep up the great work! 10 | FYI Spring 2014

We’d like to thank Dick’s Sporting Goods for supporting this challenge and providing our grand prize – a $400 gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods, which will be awarded on April 4th!

Keep an eye on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages as we announce the winner, or visit the online version of this article on our FYI+ webzine: www.fortgordonfyi.com/2014/04/90-days-review www.fortgordonfyi.com | 11

Volunteers Give the Gift of Time National Volunteer Week 2014

Originally referred to as “camp followers”, the armed forces have always been reinforced by men, women, and children willing to serve in support of their mission. Today’s volunteer corps continues to enhance the quality of life for those in uniform and their families. Their selfless devotion and determination to make a difference is celebrated each year during National Volunteer Week.

Fort Gordon’s Volunteer Picnic April 29 • 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Barton Field near the Stage All registered Fort Gordon volunteers are invited for a picnic with music, games and “spirit tents.” Lunch for Fort Gordon volunteers is complimentary. For more information contact your unit/agency/organization VMIS OPOC or contact Lynn Harshman at lynn.c.harshman.civ@mail.mil.

Fort Gordon’s celebration of its volunteers is scheduled for April 29, 2014, on Barton Field. The complimentary picnic on the field reflects the Command’s appreciation for all who share their time, talents, and energies in support of installation programs, agencies, and services. This year’s theme “Volunteers Give the Gift of Time” will be reflected throughout the planned activities. Command teams will spend time in unit sponsored spirit tents conveying their appreciation to all and recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions in support of their mission. In addition, games will be played, prizes given, lunch served and unlimited opportunities for fun and laughter will fill the field. If you volunteer on Fort Gordon, are registered and have documented your hours in the on-line Volunteer Management Information System (VMIS), then you are invited. For more information contact the Army Volunteer Corps Coordinator, Ms. Lynn Harshman at 706-791-3880 or lynn.c.harshman.civ@mail.mil.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month Taking Action to Protect Our Children Diondra Johnson, LMSW

The maltreatment of children under the age of 18 by a parent or caretaker has become a poignant societal issue often left unspoken. This devastating epidemic gives us no choice but to fight to protect children. This month we are taking action and asking everyone to join the fight through increasing our awareness and knowledge on child abuse. Below are the various forms of child abuse along with possible warning signs: • Physical abuse is the intentional physical harm or injury to a child. External injuries may be covered with extra clothing possibly identified by a child wearing long sleeve shirts during the hot summer months. Children tend to be withdrawn, fearful, and anxious. The child may exhibit behavior problems as well as low social or problem solving skills. • Emotional abuse is non-physical actions by an adult that harm a child’s emotional

development. Emotionally abused children typically exhibit distress, anxiousness to please, poor self esteem, insecurities, trust issues, and may involve themselves in criminal behavior. • Sexual abuse is inappropriate sexual activities by someone at least five years older than the child. Signs include fearfulness and mistrust of adults, ‘hiding’ from a specific person, partaking in inappropriate sexual activities such as flashing genitals in a classroom setting, running away from home or even having trouble walking. • Child neglect is the lack of care for a child’s basic needs. The child may be delayed in mental or physical development, present with a dirty and unkempt appearance, present with several medical problems due to lack of medical care, and may be frequently absent from schools displaying poor school performance.

The Family Advocacy Program aims to prevent child abuse and neglect through heightened awareness, support and education. Children are our greatest treasure and one of the best strategies to protect them is by providing parents, caregivers and teachers with a variety of resources and support. The New Parent Support Program works with individuals and Families to strengthen Family intervention through education to restore and maintain a healthy environment for the Family. Victim Advocates provides comprehensive assistance and liaison to and for victims of domestic violence. Conflict resolution and stress management classes are offered to assist families with internal conflicts that may be projected onto our child(ren). “…Now that you know, you cannot feign ignorance. Now that you’re aware of the problem, you cannot pretend you don’t care. To be concerned is to be human. To act is to care.” –Vashti Quiroz-Vega Army Community Service, Family Advocacy Program looks at all aspects of the Family to provide social and parental support and education through a wide variety of programs. It is our mission to equip our community with the tools we need. Please don’t hesitate to call and let us know how we can be of service at 706-791-3579.

Attention Students!

Are You New? Are You Moving? Student 2 Student Can Help! Imagine being a school-age child waking up one morning realizing that you are in a strange new place, and, except for your family, you don’t know anyone at all. You have no friends, you have no one to talk with and you know nothing about the school you are about to enter, the neighborhood you live in, and the community you just moved into.

S2S is a powerful program designed to help change a transitioning student’s focal point from what the student has lost to what the student will gain through the relocation. S2S guides students through their uncertain surroundings, offering — from a peer viewpoint — valued information, friendship and assistance in three areas that matter most to transitioning students.

Moving to a new place and adjusting to a new school, new teachers and finding new friends are daunting and scary experiences for most school-age children, especially if the child faces the experience more than once.

S2S volunteers are trained on the following researched-based modules:

Believing that transitioning does not have to be difficult, “just different,” the Military Child Education Coalition’s S2S or Student2-Student is a unique student-led, school managed program that confronts the challenges of transition and provides relevant training that gives students the best possible transition experience. A team of volunteer students, supervised by a school counselor, teacher or other school staff person, trains inbound and outbound transitioning students on three subject areas: academics, relationships, and finding the way. For the incoming students the team provides a forum for students to quickly feel welcomed, comfortable, included and accepted into their new school community. For the outgoing student, the team assists in helping outbound students better prepare for transitioning to another school.

• Academics: (Requirements, Processes, Access) e.g., Test Assessments, Progress Reporting, Programs and Opportunities, Enrichment Support. • Relationships: (Acceptance, Attributes, Friendships) e.g., Faculty/staff, Groups, Organizations, Peers, Local, On/off Campus. • Finding the way: (Attention, Orientation, Appreciation) e.g., The Community, the Campus, the Culture, Rules/Policies, School Documents, Structures. So, where can you find this program in the Fort Gordon area? Students from the Academy of Richmond County, Grovetown High School, Greenbrier High School, and Lakeside High School are ready and eager to help new students in their schools and new community. For more information on the Student 2 Student program, please contact School Liaison Services at 706-791-7270.

Staying Behind Julia Y. Maldonado, Mobilization and Deployment, ACS

Deployment is tough on those left behind. A great way to cope with deployment is to attend pre-deployment briefings, maintain a healthy lifestyle, continue with routines and stay connected. Staying healthy, while your Soldier is away, will provide the energy needed to manage your household. Taking care of your physical self and your emotional self is key to a successful deployment. Preparing balanced meals for the family will help you resist the urge of falling into the fast-food routine. Regular exercise will relieve stress and help you stay fit. Take some personal time to renew your body and mind. Get the proper amount of rest (6-8 hours each night), go for walks, read books, keep up with or develop a hobby, spend time with friends and family. Journaling can also help in channeling emotions and experiences, which in turn will allow you to think clearly. It’s also interesting to see how much you’ve changed or grown during deployment when you re-read your journal after your loved one has returned. Maintaining a schedule is also a good idea. If dinner was normally served at 5:00 p.m. and bedtime was 8:00 p.m., continue that routine. It’s good for you and your family. Discipline should also continue; do not curb disciplining simply because you feel guilty that your Soldier is deployed. Try to maintain the same rules and hold the children accountable just as it was prior to the deployment. Separation should

not be a reason to allow children to misbehave. Allow the children to assist with everyday household tasks. Military youth are extremely intelligent. They notice when situations change. Participation in household chores or the addition of a responsibility contributes to their sense of independence. Consider setting a day and time for family fun, especially if it was not established prior to deployment. Make sure to tell the child’s teacher or caregiver there has been a change in the home. Watch for signs of stress and encourage youth to talk about their feelings. Take advantage of online and community resources available to help you and your family cope with separation. Joining your unit Family Readiness Group increases the chances that you’ll meet someone in the exact same situation and the good news is, they are a part of your unit family! The Hearts Apart Program meets monthly on the 3rd Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at the Family Outreach Center behind Woodworth Library. It’s run by ACS staff members and open to anyone whose Service Member is deployed, on extended TDY or on an unaccompanied tour. Army Community Service, has a wealth of resources concerning, Family Readiness Operations, deployment, reunion and reintegration, and age appropriate materials for children. We’re located in Darling Hall, Suite 224. Our hours of operation are Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or visit us online at www.gordon.army.mil. We look forward to seeing and hearing from you. Good luck with your deployment.

Upcoming SHOWS:

The Hollow, by Agatha Christie Auditions: July 21 and 22. Show Dates: September 12, 13, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27.

Never Too Late, written by Sumner Arthur Long Show Dates: May 2, 3, 9, 10, 15, 16 and 17

This Broadway hit is about a married man in his fifties who suddenly learns he’s becoming a father again. His last child, a girl, was born 24 years ago and, considering the boob she married, he finds the prospect of another unthinkable. His daughter and son-in-law live with him; she gets up for breakfast at lunchtime and he is curiously addicted to solitaire. It’s not only the impending birth that startles him; his previously meek little wife begins to lay down the law. There’s to be a nursery, a new bath, and she’s to have her own checking account. Such dour capitulation you’ll never see again. “Good old fashioned domestic farce... with lots and lots of laughter.” – New York Daily News

An unhappy game of romantic follow-the-leader explodes into murder one weekend at The Hollow, home of Sir Henry and Lucy Angkatell. Dr. Cristow is at the center of the trouble when his mistress Henrietta, ex-mistress Veronica, and wife Gerda, simultaneously arrive at The Hollow. Also visiting are Edward (who is in love with Henrietta) and Midge (who loves Edward). Veronica ardently desires to marry Cristow and succeeds in reopening their affair but is unable to get him to divorce his wife. Veronica unwisely states that if she cannot have him, no one shall. Within five minutes Cristow is dead. Nearly everyone has a motive and most had the opportunity. Enter Inspector Colquhoun and Sergeant Penny to solve the crime. “As good a stage whodunit as we have had for some time.” – London Observer

Steel Magnolias, by Robert Harling

The Perfect Wedding, by Robin Hawdon

A first play which met with immediate critical and popular acceptance in its premier production by New York’s WPA Theatre. Concerned with a group of gossipy southern ladies in a small-town beauty parlor, the play is alternately hilarious and touching—and, in the end, deeply revealing of the strength and purposefulness which underlies the antic banter of its characters.

An appalling situation. A bridegroom wakes on his wedding morning in his own bridal suite, with his bride-to-be about to arrive any moment, and finds a strange girl in bed beside him. What’s more an extremely attractive girl whom, in the depths of his post stag-night hangover, he can’t remotely remember even having been introduced to. Worse – during the ensuing panic to get the stranger dressed and out of the way, the bride arrives and the girl is trapped in the bathroom. The only way out of the dilemma is to persuade the best man to pretend that the hidden girl is his girl friend. Then the problem is that the best man’s real girl friend has to be kept ignorant of the fact. By the time the bride’s parents and half the hotel staff get in on the act, the chaos reaches nuclear proportions!

Auditions: May 20 and 21. Parts for 6 women. Show Dates: July 18, 19, 25, 26, 31, and August 1 and 2.

Auditions: September 16 and 17. Parts for 4 women and 2 men. Show Dates: November, 14, 15, 21, 22, and December 4, 5 and 6.

“Harling has given his women sharp, funny dialogue…The play builds to a conclusion that is deeply moving.” – NY Daily News. “…a skillfully crafted, lovingly evoked picture of eccentricity in the smalltown South…Robert Harling is a new voice in the theatre and the qualities of Steel Magnolias suggest he may be an important one.” – Drama-Logue. “…suffused with humor and tinged with tragedy.” – NY Post.

“Laughs abound in the American premiere... It all works out in the end, but not before playgoers have aching sides.” – Wisconsin Advocate
