The Swingin’ Medallions’ one claim to fame, “Double Shot (Of My Baby’s Love),” charted at number 17 on July 2, 1966, and made them an institution in the South. They began as Pieces of Eight in the late ‘50s, and changed to The Swingin’ Medallions in 1965 when they signed with Smash. Beach music has been their forte and they have been the main purveyors of the Shag, a popular dance on Southern beaches. The Swingin’ Medallions’ personnel has changed much in a band history spanning over 40 years and continuing into the 21st century, with McElrath the only original member.

The Swingin’ Medallions

The Fort Gordon Signal Corps Band’s 40 member ensemble performs numerous concerts and ceremonies in support of local and regional events, including festivals, inaugurations and both city and state commemorations. The Band’s smaller ensembles frequently travel, in support of the Commanding General’s public outreach program. The Band also serves as the primary ceremonial unit assigned to Fort Gordon, providing ceremonial and musical support for a wide variety of signal center ceremonies, graduations and formal military functions.

Networking: A Key to Success Kim Hussey, Owner, Plan4Sucess, LLC

I am an admitted book junkie. I rarely buy new books. My passion is walking into a thrift shop or a used book store, scanning the shelves for titles that pop out at me, and finding that one book, in perfect condition, that will add value to my library. Several weeks ago, a title caught my eye. Job Search Networking: Learn how more than 68% of all jobs are found… The book was definitely a keeper, a great bargain for fifty cents. It contains charts and graphs, scripts and strategies, a step-by-step guide to networking your way to the top. Richard Beatty, a human resources and outplacement consultant and best-selling author, pulls no punches. The book, in his words, focuses on specific “how to do it” techniques. Upon reflection, I realized that almost every job I have ever worked has been found through networking. After arriving at Fort Gordon, my new neighbor invited me for coffee and told me about open positions at the education center for substitute learning center operators. We both applied and we both got hired. The next job I found was through a woman I met at a party on Fort Gordon. She told me, “I know the perfect job for you.” Later, she introduced me to her supervisor. I then applied at her organization and although there were no full time positions open, I was able to work as a seasonal temp for two years until a full time position became available. I remained at that organization for an additional 14 years. The job was a very good fit, allowing me a rewarding profession as a career advisor, instrumental in

helping many low-income individuals achieve financial success through education. After noting in one of my previous articles that Jay Block, in his book, Landing a Job in Troubled Times, advises 15 hours of networking each week, Beatty’s book appeared to be the perfect addition to my collection. What is networking? It is personal contact with individuals who can offer you job leads by exposing you to the hidden job market, identifying and expanding potential employment opportunities. Networking is much more efficient and effective than applying for hundreds of positions on indeed. com or sending out blind resumes (although it is still advised that you use these methods in your quest for employment.) In addition to learning about open positions, you can receive a first-hand description of the pros and cons of working for an organization, receive the names of those in charge of hiring, and there is also the possibility of encountering someone who might be willing to land you an informal meeting with a member of management, as was my experience. Beatty states “the key to networking is an organized approach…in order for you to realize the full benefit of this powerful resource; you will need to become knowledgeable and skilled in the techniques and subtleties of the networking process.” Beatty explains why networking works: “Everyone has a basic need or desire to be influential.” He discusses overcoming the fear

and anxiety of “feeling” awkward in dealing with others. The key: preparation and practice. Beatty not only teaches strategic planning, but sums up his methods in easy to complete forms: Identifying Target Industries; Identification of Primary Networking Contacts; Prioritized Listing of Primary Networking Contacts; and The Networking Call Sheet. Networking phone calls and networking meetings are discussed in full detail. Recordkeeping samples, numerous scripts, and thank you letter templates are included. Additionally, Beatty’s form, the Networking Meeting Plan, precedes a comprehensive discussion of all the critical elements that will determine the best outcome. He further expounds on ways to overcome networking barriers and highlights networking shortcuts. There are many empowering network guides on the market. By exploring this one particular guide, you see what most authors emphasize as elements of the process of networking. My intent is to offer those searching for employment another tool that can be honed and perfected and is worth the time to learn and apply, especially if networking is not within your comfort zone. Remember any circumstance can be a networking opportunity – standing in the grocery line; social meet ups, special events, and so forth. Beatty takes informal networking a bit farther, offering specific advice to strategically plan on meeting individuals, up to the corporate level, who might be your key to successful employment.

Whole Lotta Sun: Summer at Pointes West! Molly Swift, Editor

A number of years ago I was invited to go camping (something I had never done) – I was told I would love the place, so I decided to head out at least for the afternoon to see if I might want to stay the night. The place was called Pointes West and I was informed it was Army property out at the lake at Clark’s Hill. Many of my family members are prior service and I grew up using military facilities, so when I heard this I lowered my expectations a little and decided to go just for the company. My goodness, my attitude was so wrong! Pointes West is a beautiful piece of land that juts out on its own minipeninsula. It provides ample peace and quiet, a perfect place to unwind and forget the working week or any other stresses. Upon my arrival I took a few deep breaths and then relaxed. The FYI has covered Pointes West on a few occasions, but since it is summer and most of us are looking for things to do with our families and loved ones we felt it appropriate to revisit this haven of easy living to see what’s happening. I spoke with Jenna Parker, Business Manager of Pointes West, and asked her a few questions about life on the lake:

Pointes West is an Army Resort – with a title like that, who is eligible to visit the area, rent cabins and so on? You must be an authorized user. Authorized users include Active Duty, Retired, Reservists, National Guard, DoD Employee, DA Employee, or a family member of one of the above.

Is there a fee to get in? No, there is no fee to get into Pointes West!

What kind of lodging is available? There is so much to choose from! We have campers, cottages, cabins, motel suites, full hook-up sites, semi-electric sites, and primitive camping sites. We cater to all people of all ages – you don’t even have to be the “outdoors type” to come enjoy Pointes West.

So what activities are available to your customers? Again we have a wide variety of activities. They can enjoy nature trails, fishing, walking, parasailing, bike riding, canoes, pedal boats, jon boats, volleyball, horseshoes, playgrounds and picnic areas. Of course, there is always the option to sit and enjoy the scenery.

Is there a store at Pointes West? Yes, we have a country store with a wide of assortment of food, drinks, clothing, and tackle.

How do they place reservations for any of the amenities? Active duty personnel can make reservations 180 days in advance; retirees can make reservations 150 days in advance! Everyone can call the main office to make reservations: 706-541-1057.

What - in your opinion - is so wonderful about Pointes West? Where to start?! It is a great place for family outings – you could come for a vacation that lasts for weeks and you never do the same thing twice. All facilities are first class and the staff is very helpful and cordial as our patrons need. We have also added to Pointes West a unique challenge our visitors – the massive High Ropes Confidence Course which features a variety of obstacles high above the ground to test participants mentally and physically! For gatherings and celebrations we have a beautiful pavilion and a stunning waterfront conference center which easily accommodates parties – and what a view for saying your vows! It’s now easy to house your wedding party at Pointes West and make a weekend out of it! Of course, we are always looking for ways to make your stay here as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. If you need anything, just ask! And of course, if you need some R&R, Pointes West is your destination vacation!

Book: The Matched Trilogy: Matched, Crossed, Reached, 2010-2012 Author: Ally Condie This series follows the interwoven lives of three main characters: Cassia, Ky, and Xander. Set in a dystopian society where every aspect of a person’s life is chosen by The Society. As you may have guessed, there are those that like living in The Society, those that do not, and those that become self-aware. Picture a mix of Aeon Flux, Equilibrium, The Giver, and the Handmaid’s Tale. Matched was my introduction into the very broad YA (Young Adult) genre. Much to my surprise it was very well written! The storyline and the action followed a good pace. The characters and their actions and responses were very believable given the circumstances. Once I began Matched I quickly devoured Crossed and looked forward to completing the series with Reached. I am now waiting for the movie! Movies/TV: Sherlock, Seasons 1 & 2, 2010 & 2011 Actors: Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman Rated: NR This fabulous BBC television series is a contemporary take on the classic Arthur Conan Doyle stories. Sherlock is a thrilling, funny, fast-paced adventure series set in present-day London. No seriously! Holmes is a texting, web surfing genius. Dr. Watson is recently returned from serving in Afghanistan and writes a blog. Irene is a dominatrix that gives them both a run for their money. Plus, she programs a cheeky text tone to Sherlock’s phone. Moriarty is deliciously wicked with a surprising ringtone. Never fear, Holmes and Watson still reside at 221B Baker Street. Enjoy the fun and mystery. If you are familiar with Elementary, the American version of a modern Sherlock, there is no comparison. And yes, Holmes is from Star Trek into Darkness and Watson was in The Hobbit… The hunt is afoot! moviereview What’s behind the door?

Room 237 Alice Wynn, Contributing Writer

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining has long been regarded as one of the greatest horror films ever made. The timeless story of Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) and his family spending the winter in a Colorado resort hotel has all the makings of a truly frightening movie experience – creepy little girls, ghosts, buckets of blood, son Danny’s psychic visions. While the film has certainly scared nearly three generations, it’s also one that leaves you scratching your head long after the credits have rolled. What was that about? Was the hotel haunted? Was he crazy? Was it all in his mind? Thematic elements aside, The Shining also has a multitude of things, be it number placement, brand of typewriter or color of a vehicle, that all have significant meaning leading to a deeper examination of the film. At least they do according to Room 237, a documentary

by Rodney Ascher, available now On Demand. Room 237 relies on commentary from people ranging from film historians to authors and conspiracy theorists (we never see these people), each giving their insight as to what message Kubrick was trying to relay in The Shining. Regardless what far-flung ideas are presented, you have to give them credit – what they’re saying makes sense, but, as the saying goes, sometimes a banana is just a banana. According to one commentator, Kubrick, before filming The Shining, studied “subliminal seduction,” a technique used by advertising agencies. This means that everything in the film is there for a reason, nothing is accidental, including the notion that Kubrick airbrushed an image of himself in the clouds seen during the opening credits. For instance, one of the commentators presents The Shining as being a metaphor for the genocide of Native Americans. This is seen, shown through movie clips, one in which the hotel manager talks about the hotel being built on a burial mound and having to fend off attacks while the hotel was being built. Not to mention the décor of the hotel, with Native American artwork and photographs covering the walls. The most curious however, is the significance in the placement of industrial-sized cans of Calumet baking powder placed in the background of another scene. Calumet baking powder is known for its logo, a Native American profile in a full feather headdress. The number 42 is also significant. Danny wears a shirt bearing the number. Forty-two cars are in the parking lot of the hotel seen from an aerial shot. Jack and his wife watch the film Summer of ’42. Even room

number 237, which is a room in the hotel central to the plot of The Shining, equals 42, two times three times seven. 1942 is the year that Germany decided to systematically start decimating the Jews, putting forth another theory that the film is a metaphor for the Holocaust. This idea is further established by the maker of Jack’s typewriter, which upon close inspection is Adler, meaning eagle in German. Eagles were also a symbol of the Nazi party. There is also the notion that Kubrick thumbed his nose at The Shining’s author Stephen King. In the book, the Torrance family owns a red Volkswagen Beetle. In the film, it is yellow. However, the family passes a wreck which involves a red Beetle. One commentator says that this is Kubrick’s way of telling King that he took his book and made it all his own. As it turns out, King was not happy with Kubrick’s rendition of his book at all. As far as the more bizarre theories, there is the one connecting The Shining with the moon landing. According to conspiracy theorists, the moon landing wasn’t real, that it was filmed on a Hollywood soundstage, and Kubrick was the director. In The Shining, there are some subtle references to the moon landing such as Danny’s Apollo 11 sweater and placement of Tang (supposedly the drink of choice during the moon mission), all of which supposedly point to Kubrick acknowledging his involvement. Ascher has certainly given audiences something to ponder with this documentary. Whether or not all it encompasses is true or not, we may never know, but it is all entertaining. A search for hidden meaning is always fascinating, and with Room 237 offering such a unique perspective on a classic horror film, it also gives you something to think about. Sure, you can write some of it off as hooey, but then it wouldn’t be nearly as fun. If anything, it will make you want to queue up The Shining and see what you can catch.

Upcoming Shows: Social Security, by Andrew Bergman Show dates: July 19, 20, 26 & 27, August 1, 2 & 3 “Just when you were beginning to think you were never going to laugh again on Broadway, along comes Social Security...The play is a hoot, and better yet, a sophisticated, even civilized hoot.” –The New York Post Two married art dealers struggle with the visit of the wife’s goody-goody sister, her uptight CPA husband, and her archetypal Jewish Mother – who are there to try to save their college student daughter running wild… This show is full of laughs and great humor. Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club, by Jeffrey Hatcher Show dates: September 20, 21, 27 & 28, October 10, 11 & 12 Audition dates: July 22 & 23, 7 p.m. Playwright Jeffrey Hatcher takes Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous characters and drops them into a story inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella The Suicide Club to create a thrilling comic mystery. The whodunit mystery comes complete with a wow-I-didn’t-see-that-coming ending.” Arizona Daily Star

Miracle on South Division Street, by Tom Dudzick Show dates: November 16, 17, 22 & 23, Dec. 5, 6 & 7 Audition dates: October 7 & 8, 7 p.m. “It’s Christmas Eve, as we experience the story of the Nowak family, living amidst the urban rubble of Buffalo, NY’s East Side. Maybe the neighborhood is depressed, but not Clara, the family matriarch. She happily runs her soup kitchen and tends to the family heirloom – a 20-foot shrine to the Blessed Mother which adjoins the house. This neighborhood beacon of faith commemorates the day in 1942 when the Blessed Virgin Mary materialized in her father’s barber shop! When the play opens, a family meeting is in progress. Daughter Ruth divulges her plan to finally “go public” with the family miracle by creating a one-woman play about the sacred event. The results are heartfelt and hilarious.” You can call the Box Office at 706-793-8552 for tickets and information. And, as always, we hope to see YOU at the theatre in the very near future.
