Speaking of which... As we enter 2014, I would like to personally thank each of you for your support over the years. This is my last issue as editor at Fort Gordon. It is difficult to imagine life without Family and MWR Marketing, the FYI, and all the people I have had the sheer honor and pleasure of working with over the past seven years. All the best, Fort Gordon – here’s to a bright future ahead and good times with the ones we love! Take care,

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT It’s a new year; a time to focus on the future, make resolutions and set goals. Family and MWR is looking forward to the future and making some big changes you should be aware of. Most notably, we will no longer be printing the FYI magazine on a monthly basis.

This will be the final monthly issue of the FYI Magazine. But don’t worry, we will continue to produce a quarterly version of the magazine. Its purpose will be to inform new Fort Gordon residents of all the ways they can connect with us. This quarterly magazine will also be a handy directory to keep when it’s not convenient to connect with us online.

The FYI Magazine may be changing, but the content we provide will still continue stronger than ever.

planningyour career The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Tools for Professional Growth or Solution for a Transitional Lifestyle Kim Hussey, Owner, Plan4Success, LLC

Although I was a military wife for only 11 years, I moved 7 times. As a military spouse, you can anticipate numerous breaks in your career. Over the years, I have met a number of individuals, some with advanced degrees, who gave up their own livelihoods and financial stability to follow their spouses. Military family members can spend months, even years, seeking employment after a move, only to have to repeat their struggle with the next PCS. To remedy this problem, one has to research the options. One employment option I’ve discussed in the past is training for a highly transferable career field, such as certified nurse aide training as a first step to becoming a registered nurse, an excellent career path for the military spouse. In this article we will explore steps to starting your own small business. I had a neighbor from Europe who had a dream. She was interested in starting a company to produce a product she had used in Belgium, which was not readily available in the United States. Being the good friend that I am, (although I thought she was absolutely nuts because of the potential start-up costs related to the product), I accompanied her to the Small Business Development Center in Augusta for a consultation. While her dream never materialized, years later I returned to the SBDC with a dream of my own. I learned that The Georgia Small Business Development Center is funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration and the University of Georgia. The centers, located

across the state, provide free consulting and low cost training to those interested in starting a business. The first class I attended was “Starting Your Own Business.” This three-hour core class will be offered again in Augusta on January 16, 2014, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the cost of $69. (Service Disabled Veterans may attend for free, but must pre-register.) Pre-registration and payment is required by 5 p.m. Tuesday, January 14. Over the years, I also learned how to write a detailed business plan, market products and services, price products and services, and even attended training specifically created for military veterans. One of my favorite training opportunities was a full day class called, “Hyper Grow Your Business.” Although it was later offered in Augusta, I drove to Atlanta to attend this excellent training program, developed and presented by a college professor. I met people who were close to earning their first million and others like me, who were working regular jobs but thinking in terms of possibilities. It was a great place to meet like-minded folks and hear their stories. And I learned, early on, as a professional student I had found the perfect training venue – classes with no homework, per se. The homework was taking action and life experience. Years later, after I started my business, Plan4Success, LLC, I had an epiphany. I realized that the SBDC training programs were

the perfect tool for professional development and were a great tool to enhance the resumes of those seeking employment. I recognized that during the interview, it could be brought to the attention of the employer that time during unemployment was not wasted. The time was utilized for self-improvement, learning valuable skills for the marketplace. I know a number of successful small business owners who do not have business degrees and have never attended training. Some people have a natural aptitude for business. For those who don’t, go online at www.georgiasbdc.org and discover both local and long distance training opportunities and online classes, among other resources. Augusta’s University of Georgia Small Business Development Center is located at Enterprise Mills at 1450 Greene Street, Suite 3500, Augusta. The phone number is 706-721-4545. I can’t say enough about Susan Caldwell, Director of the Augusta Center. Susan has a B.S. in Marketing from the University of Pennsylvania and a M.B.A. from the University of Georgia. Her service ethic is outstanding. She is knowledgeable of all phases of business, especially marketing. After a detailed business plan in created, Susan meets with potential (or current) business owners to offer her expertise and potential solutions to a variety of business problems, And keep in mind, each state offers consulting and small business development classes. Several months ago, I attended three eBay classes, (9.5 hours), in North Carolina – basic, advanced and starting a store. The trainer was outstanding. He had recently won an award as instructor of the year for eBay. I am really excited about testing out the waters on eBay – which I would have never done without the training. Whether you attend SBDC classes to explore the possibility of starting your own small business or you take the classes to upgrade your overall business knowledge and skills and to make yourself more marketable, the SBDC remains a bargain for those in search of professional development and small business start-up skills and opportunities.

Dynamic Movements Not only has the Military changed, but so has fitness. One of these changes is the shift from static stretching to dynamic movements. In the past static stretching had been used prior to most workouts. This has changed as most people have stopped performing static stretching as part of a pre-workout. Understand this. I am not saying static stretching is bad, but there is a time and place for it. The place is at the end of a workout or on recovery days. Most people in the sports and fitness field feel static stretching should not be used prior to working out or performing athletic events as it hasn’t proven to increase performance nor proven to decrease athletic injuries, much to most people’s disbelief. We must still warm-up, but warming up and stretching are two different things. Warming up prepares the body both physically and neurologically. Dynamic movements increase blood flow, increase core temperature, mimic everyday movements, increase athletic performance, increase recovery, recruit fasttwitch muscle fibers and stimulate your central nervous system, to name a few. Dynamic movements for lack of a scientific definition are activities that involve multiple

muscles/joints and incorporate everyday activities. It is also sometimes called ‘functional training.’ In fact, these movements have shown to improve fitness performance by up to 30 percent. According to a service member by the name of Simmons, “my power has increased, my endurance soars and I perform the movements with a smoother, more fluid motion.” Specific dynamic movements include soldier marches, A-Skips, B-Skips, ‘froggies’ and the scorpion, to name a few. By not performing dynamic movements, your program isn’t properly warming up your body to prepare for exercise, which ultimately increases the chance of injury. Personally, I have used forms of dynamic movements for approximately 20 years and have completely focused on dynamic movements the last few years. As a result I have better workouts and my flexibility has increased substantially. In addition, my recovery time has been much quicker as well. With today’s demanding schedules service members face, we must have more effective exercise programs that allow personnel the most efficient workout, preserves safety and provides a quick recovery period. “I love the

scorpion. It’s my favorite,” said Senior Chief Information Systems Technician (SW/AW) Amanda Alston. “Normally, when I workout in the morning I have pain and stiffness, but after the movements I feel stretched, [with] no pain and ready to exercise,” added Alston. Various research has also shown that static stretching increases the chances of dislocating joints because it creates an overstretched feeling in the muscle, which allows the muscle to become too relaxed and produces too large of a range of motion. It also typically causes fatigue and lethargic physical activity. This change has also been endorsed by other credible sources, such as the National Strength and Conditioning Organization as well as most strength and conditioning coaches in the field of sports medicine. We must focus on dynamic movements if we want to prepare for every situation whether it is land, air or sea based. It’s time to take our Sailors to a new level as they deserve the best technologies, fitness equipment and training techniques. And by the sound of the responses of the crew dynamic movements are gaining more popularity and are here to stay!

Movies/TV: Now You See Me Actors: Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Cain, and Dave Franco Director: Louis Leterrier Year: 2013 Rating: PG-13 Is it just me or was 2013 like a 365-day-long Friday the 13th nightmare? I want to wish it well as I wave to it in my rear-view mirror. Let me stop before I end up writing a country song. Good news was fleeting and at times felt like an illusion. With this thought in mind, I have chosen a feel good, action packed, revenge plot, bank robbery film sprinkled with amazing prestidigitations. In Now You See Me an elite FBI squad is in a game of cat and mouse against The Four Horsemen, a team of the world’s greatest illusionists. The Four Horsemen pull off a series of daring heists against corrupt business leaders during their performances, showering the stolen profits on their audiences while staying one step ahead of the law.

The visual effects were fun and inspiring. The story was well written and had an ending that I did not see coming. There was an interesting mix of casting that I totally appreciated. [Oops, my inner Valley Girl is, like, showing.] The Four Horsemen were: Zombieland’s Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson; Isla Fisher of Confessions of a Shopaholic; and 21 Jump Street’s Dave Franco. They even had the Hulk, Mark Ruffalo, as the FBI agent chasing them! Still not convinced? Did you know that the director Louis Leterrier also did the Transporter movies and Clash of the Titans? Having watched Now You See Me eight times since its DVD release on Labor Day may make me a bit biased but it is worth a peek. Let me know what you think.

Book: Yogalosophy: 28 days to the ultimate mind-body makeover Author: Mandy Ingber, 2013 ISBN: 9781580054454 So it is the beginning of the year. Have you made those New Year’s Resolutions that you fully intend to keep? Me too. So why not get off to a great start by learning the philosophy behind syncing your mind and body through yoga? This book includes recipes. It is also from beginner to expert friendly.

Chapters include topics such as nurturing yourself, staying positive, breathing, and creating healthy habits. Whether or not you follow yoga, these are always useful tools to have in your toolkit of life. There are many other books on yoga at the library – this is but one that I have chosen to spotlight. I hope it helps.

Last year the Family & MWR Marketing Team had an online competition called Rejuvenate: 31 Days to Get Fit open to the Military Community. The competition, held on Facebook, asked for participants to post a picture of themselves getting fit – either in a conventional, or in a more creative way. The person with the most “likes” per week won a prize.

This year we are turning it up! www.fortgordonfyi.com | 11

details: Not only are we increasing the number of days of fitness to 90, but we are providing a fun way to train for sporting events, such as the upcoming Dare to Tri: Sprint Triathlon which will take place March 29th. 90 Days to Get Fit offers accountability and creative tips to build upon your resolutions and maintain a healthy lifestyle. 90 Days to Get Fit invites our military community to participate by posting pictures or videos of themselves working out, eating healthy, or sharing personal wellness tips on our social media pages to win a weekly prize. Just like last year, the post that receives the most “likes” will win a prize at the end of the week. (Hint: coming up with unique material always helps!) But this year, not only will we be getting fit on Facebook, you can increase your chances of winning by posting on Instagram and Twitter as well! Prizes are only available to authorized users*, but everyone is welcome to join in on the fun. The Grand Prize awarded at the end of this 90-day event will be a $400 Gift Card to Dick’s Sporting Goods! Get Fit with Family & MWR Molly Swift, Editor

It’s the New Year; we examined our lifestyles and now we’re facing some serious resolutions. Ugh. Actually, it’s not all bad. New habits might require some extra effort on your part, but there is plenty on Fort Gordon to help you stay the course. From taking advantage of swimming and massage facilities, to personal development through education; Family and MWR will help you to not only meet your goals, but feel great while you’re winning in 2014!

Getting your Toes Wet The Fort Gordon Aquatics team is hard at work transforming the way you experience swimming! Not only are private and group swimming lessons available at the Indoor Pool, but so are classes for babies and toddlers and Family Fun Nights – open swimming every Friday night from 4 p.m-close. During the sweltering summer months, catch a movie while floating in the Outdoor Pool, or cool off at the Spray Park. The Aquatics division is all about safety, affordability and accessibility – regularly scheduled programs are available during weekdays and don’t cost an arm and a leg! For instance, individual private lessons are $10 for a half hour session, or individuals can pair up with someone of a similar ability for joint instruction which only costs $15 for a half hour session! Active Duty don’t need to worry about cost at all – all instruction for Active Duty is provided free of charge! For all upcoming events, lessons and more, call the Indoor Pool at 706-791-3034, or check out the web page at http://fortgordon.com/sports_and_recreation/aquatics.php.

Beat the Tension A holistic approach to your health includes being kind to your muscles – new exercises got you in knots? Wrenched something you haven’t used in a while? Massage in the United States has enjoyed a revival as a holistic therapy for a few decades, even though the practice of manipulating muscle and soft tissue has actually been around for a much longer time – many sources suggest references to the “art” of massage date back thousands of years, in fact. Still, it is widely accepted as providing multiple health benefits, to include pain relief, rehabilitate sports injuries, reduce stress, increase relaxation, address anxiety and depression, and aid general wellness. We’ve got you covered at Gordon’s Fitness on Barnes Avenue. Therapeutic on many levels, massages at Gordon’s Fitness are delivered by trained professionals and start at $45 per hour. The very capable and seriously lovely Nancy Schneider, LMT, NCTMB, runs the clinic and she is joined at the clinic by Michelle Burt and Stacy Mock – also trained therapists – to meet the demands of the installation. Massage is a great recovery tool for Wounded Warriors and service members who experience symptoms of PTSD, anxiety and numerous stress disorders. The therapy provided by massage extends beyond the immediate benefits of relaxing muscles in distress; it can be a way of releasing tension, both physically and mentally. In fact, Nancy often finds her patients look forward to their sessions as much for the opportunity to off-load as to be relieved of muscular pain. So book your session today and help yourself stay free of pain, anxiety and tension. Call Nancy at 803270-8836.

Acquiring Knowledge “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” Family and MWR invites you to ignite the passion for knowledge with any number of classes and workshops. Often provided at no cost, instruction is available through various MWR facilities and programs. Army and Community Service offers a wide range of classes for both individuals and units on items such as financial readiness which covers budgeting basics, car buying, basic investments, and use of credit. Special classes on consumer topics such as identity theft, predatory lending, and frauds/scams are also available. Family Advocacy offers a New Parent Support Program that includes parent education classes, and Army Family Team Building (AFTB) provides personal and Family preparedness. Other educational opportunities can be found at the Woodworth Consolidated Library where reference classes are offered on a monthly basis; learn how to download Ebooks, or research your heritage online through HeritageQuest – the staff at Woodworth are happy to help during these regularly scheduled classes! www.fortgordonfyi.com | 13

Get on Top of Your Job Search Melissa Smith, Personal Financial Readiness Specialist

Searching for a new job is hard work. In fact, it can be the toughest job you’ll ever have. The key to job search success is to treat the entire process like a business; think of yourself as being in the job-hunting business. Search for the right job – Use job search engines to find jobs related to your skills by using keywords that match your interests and location where you want to work. Narrowing your search criteria will save time and allow you to avoid non-relevant jobs. Network – Networking is one effective way of finding employment. Connect with everyone you know. Join LinkedIn groups so you have access to job listings. Attend job hiring events. Most of the events are staffed by the actual Human Resource Manager. Customize your Resume and Cover Letter – Take the time to write a targeted resume which will link your skills with the knowledge, skills, and abilities with the job you are applying for. Highlight accomplishments, education and training. How Technically Literate are You? – What are your basic computer skills? Particularly, what are your word processing, spreadsheets, database and

office administrative skills? If you need to brush up, look at what classes your local library, or community college may offer. Look for free training commonly offered on software, such as Microsoft Office. Interpersonal Skills – Most businesses have a teamwork approach. How well do you work with others? What projects and/or tasks have you completed in a team environment? Have you had any conflict with others in the workplace? Dependability – Managers are looking for candidates they can trust and rely on, and individuals who can work independently with little supervision. Do you get to work on time? How effective are your time management skills? Ace the Job Interview – Take the time to prepare and research the company before you go to the interview. Be positive, energetic, dress professionally and display confidence. Don’t be afraid to tell the employer how well you feel your skills will fit their company. Also, it is a good idea to practice answering interview questions. Interview Follow Up – Send a thank you note to everyone you interviewed with. Ask when the job is expected to be filled. For more information, call Melissa Smith, Employment Readiness Program Manager at 706-791-7878/0795.

Upcoming SHOWS:

“Harling has given his women sharp, funny dialogue…The play builds to a conclusion that is deeply moving.” — NY Daily News.

Lend Me a Tenor, by Ken Ludwig

Winner! 3 Tony Awards and 4 Drama Desk Awards

“…a skillfully crafted, lovingly evoked picture of eccentricity in the small-town South…Robert Harling is a new voice in the theatre and the qualities of Steel Magnolias suggest he may be an important one.” — Drama-Logue.

Nominee! 2010 Tony Award, Best Revival of a Play

“…suffused with humor and tinged with tragedy.” — NY Post.

Show Dates: February 21, 22, 28, and March 1, 13, 14 and 15

Lend Me a Tenor is set in September 1934. Saunders, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, is primed to welcome world famous, Tito Morelli, Il Stupendo, the greatest tenor of his generation, to appear for one night only as Otello. The star arrives late and, through a hilarious series of mishaps, is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he’s dead. In a frantic attempt to salvage the evening, Saunders persuades Max to get into Morelli’s Otello costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds admirably, but Morelli comes to and gets into his other costume ready to perform. Now two Otellos are running around in costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo. A sensation on Broadway and in London’s West End, this madcap, screwball comedy is guaranteed to leave audiences teary-eyed with laughter.

The Hollow, by Agatha Christie Auditions: July 21 and 22. Show Dates: September 12, 13, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27.

“One of two great farces by a living writer.” - The New York Times

An unhappy game of romantic follow-the-leader explodes into murder one weekend at The Hollow, home of Sir Henry and Lucy Angkatell. Dr. Cristow is at the center of the trouble when his mistress Henrietta, ex-mistress Veronica, and wife Gerda, simultaneously arrive at The Hollow. Also visiting are Edward (who is in love with Henrietta) and Midge (who loves Edward). Veronica ardently desires to marry Cristow and succeeds in reopening their affair but is unable to get him to divorce his wife. Veronica unwisely states that if she cannot have him, no one shall. Within five minutes Cristow is dead. Nearly everyone has a motive and most had the opportunity. Enter Inspector Colquhoun and Sergeant Penny to solve the crime.

Never Too Late, written by Sumner Arthur Long

“As good a stage whodunit as we have had for some time.” — London Observer

Auditions: February 24 and 25. Parts for 6 men and 3 women Show Dates: May 2, 3, 9, 10, 15, 16 and 17 This Broadway hit is about a married man in his fifties who suddenly learns he’s becoming a father again. His last child, a girl, was born 24 years ago and, considering the boob she married, he finds the prospect of another unthinkable. His daughter and son-in-law live with him; she gets up for breakfast at lunchtime and he is curiously addicted to solitaire. It’s not only the impending birth that startles him; his previously meek little wife begins to lay down the law. There’s to be a nursery, a new bath, and she’s to have her own checking account. Such dour capitulation you’ll never see again. “Good old fashioned domestic farce... with lots and lots of laughter.” - New York Daily News

Steel Magnolias, by Robert Harling

Auditions: May 20 and 21. Parts for 6 women. Show Dates: July 18, 19, 25, 26, 31, and August 1 and 2. A first play which met with immediate critical and popular acceptance in its premier production by New York’s WPA Theatre. Concerned with a group of gossipy southern ladies in a small-town beauty parlor, the play is alternately hilarious and touching—and, in the end, deeply revealing of the strength and purposefulness which underlies the antic banter of its characters.

The Perfect Wedding, by Robin Hawdon

Auditions: September 16 and 17. Parts for 4 women and 2 men. Show Dates: November, 14, 15, 21, 22, and December 4, 5 and 6. An appalling situation. A bridegroom wakes on his wedding morning in his own bridal suite, with his bride-to-be about to arrive any moment, and finds a strange girl in bed beside him. What’s more an extremely attractive girl whom, in the depths of his post stag-night hangover, he can’t remotely remember even having been introduced to. Worse - during the ensuing panic to get the stranger dressed and out of the way, the bride arrives and the girl is trapped in the bathroom. The only way out of the dilemma is to persuade the best man to pretend that the hidden girl is his girl friend. Then the problem is that the best man’s real girl friend has to be kept ignorant of the fact. By the time the bride’s parents and half the hotel staff get in on the act, the chaos reaches nuclear proportions! The play has provoked waves of laughter in literally hundreds of productions around Europe and across America, and is due to be made into a Hollywood film. It is that rare combination - a riotous comedy and a touching love story at the same time. “Laughs abound in the American premiere...It all works out in the end, but not before playgoers have aching sides.” — Wisconsin Advocate
