The Swingin’ Medallions’ one claim to fame, “Double Shot (Of My Baby’s Love),” charted at number 17 on July 2, 1966, and made them an institution in the South. They began as Pieces of Eight in the late ‘50s, and changed to The Swingin’ Medallions in 1965 when they signed with Smash. Beach music has been their forte and they have been the main purveyors of the Shag, a popular dance on Southern beaches. The Swingin’ Medallions’ personnel has changed much in a band history spanning over 40 years and continuing into the 21st century, with McElrath the only original member.

The Fort Gordon Signal Corps Band’s 40 member ensemble performs numerous concerts and ceremonies in support of local and regional events, including festivals, inaugurations and both city and state commemorations. The Band’s smaller ensembles frequently travel, in support of the Commanding General’s public outreach program. The Band also serves as the primary ceremonial unit assigned to Fort Gordon, providing ceremonial and musical support for a wide variety of signal center ceremonies, graduations and formal military functions.

Under the Crown is a weekend filled with new ways to learn and experience the history of Augusta and North Augusta. Historical re-enactors will be at the Living History Park to allow a glimpse of the period of the American Revolution. The event will include reenactments of daily life during the British occupation of Augusta including the arrest and Court Martial of traitors to the Crown, as well as 18th Century music and entertainment. The Proteus Solution Kim Hussey, Owner, Plan4Success, LLC
Over the past year, I have shared a number of self-marketing tools, hoping to give you an edge in your search for employment. I’ve also written a number of columns discussing the components of the Protean Workplace, a model of employment created as a career navigation tool by Jay Block, a leading executive career coach and author of 15 job search and motivational books and audio programs – and my mentor. I recently re-read The Proteus Solution, a parable written and published in 2011 by Jay Block and Sharon Calvin. A displaced worker, Nick Olsen, is scanning the job search section at a local bookstore. There, he is befriended by Maggie, a retired teacher and career counselor. Maggie offers Nick priceless advice on his road to employment. This chance encounter leads Nick on a journey of self-discovery. Maggie teaches Nick the key aspects of a comprehensive “job campaign” and how to build a future in today’s rapidly changing workforce. Through working the process, Nick finds a job. It is not the job of his dreams, but a bridge job, a step toward proactively reaching his goals. Nick thus finds the Proteus Solution. The book is broken down into 11 life lessons, as explained by Maggie, the protagonist. Each lesson is summarized at the end of the chapter, reiterating the main points. Block integrates his 20 plus years of coaching wisdom into an entertaining, fun to read, teaching tool. Over coffee at the bookstore, Maggie offers to teach Nick an easy five-step process to
rapid employment. She tempers it with the advice that one’s job affects all aspects of a life, a reason to devote the time necessary to do some serious thinking about his career goals. At their first meeting, the five-step process for landing a job in troubled times is discussed in detail. Nick is taught that fear is his greatest enemy and his thoughts are his greatest asset. Ten principles to live by, beliefs that lead to a successful life – and job search – are also discussed in detail, before Maggie explains the “Protean Mindset.” Finally, Nick is taught emotional channeling techniques, tools to help him remain positive in times of stress, to support the high energy and motivation necessary to conduct a thorough “job campaign.” Nick’s first meeting ends with a homework assignment. Maggie tells Nick that the key to happiness is figuring out his top five to eight signature values regarding his life and his career. Once he discovers his signature values, integrating these values into everyday life is of utmost importance. Nick is to think about his values, rank them in order of importance in his life, then determine how he will use this knowledge.
Maggie also teaches Nick the importance of cover letters, thank you notes and writing a bio in his quest for employment. After completing his homework – researching 50 to 100 jobs and industries and creating a value based resume, Nick and Maggie enjoy their last meeting. Maggie advises Nick to develop a highly detailed plan of action. Maggie teaches Nick that success lies in creating an allinclusive job campaign schedule which breaks down job search activities in time slots. She also discusses interview preparation and much more. Nick receives a job offer. Despite some trepidation, he accepts the job. He also meets THE girl. The book then ends, with a strange but interesting twist. This small, easy-to-read guide lays out an A to Z, step-by-step strategy for finding employment in today’s world. Hopefully, I have piqued your interest and you will read The Proteus Solution. And, hopefully, you will enjoy it as much as I have.
The hardware or tools of the job search campaign are explored in the second meeting. Maggie teaches Nick about the importance of creating a value based resume, a method of quickly marketing the unique value he will bring to a particular employer. She discusses building a profile on LinkedIn and developing video resumes and personal web pages.

theview There’s Nothing to do on Post! Jennifer Wellman, Contributing Writer
Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (FMWR) plays a major role in everyday life in the Fort Gordon military community. FMWR provides so many wonderful services to the members of the Fort Gordon military community; I challenge anyone to say “there’s nothing to do” on post! FMWR also provides a well organized and continuously updated website, www.fortgordon.com, which makes it easy for members of our community to know exactly what’s happening on Fort Gordon every day of the week. Now that summer is almost upon us, the first service provided by FMWR that comes to mind is the fabulous pool on post! Diving boards, huge water slide, water park area, kiddie pool, tri-level sun deck, and a snack bar all make for a great way to beat the heat! Some of the other outdoor activities offered include the awardwinning Gordon Lakes Golf Club, Fort Gordon Sportsman’s Club, horseback riding at Hilltop Riding Stable, fishing at one of the many stocked ponds, and camping at Lake Leitner. Pointes West Army Resort, located a short drive away from Fort Gordon in Appling, Georgia on Lake Thurmond, offers year-round family fun. Camping, swimming, boating, hiking, and picnicking are some of the activities available at the resort. There are also plenty of indoor activities on Fort Gordon. The newly renovated Gordon Lanes Bowling Center is a great place to meet up with friends and family for a fun evening. Feeling lucky? Head over to Bingo Palace for some serious bingo action with jackpots sometimes totaling over $11,000! One of my personal favorites is the Fort Gordon Dinner Theater. What a great date night! Between the well produced shows and delicious food, you can’t go wrong with a night out at the dinner theater! Be sure to check the FMWR website for upcoming shows. Who knows? You may find yourself on stage auditioning for one of their future productions! Speaking of food, there are so many places to grab a bite to eat here on Fort Gordon. There are currently four Java locations on Fort Gordon.

Java Escape, located in the Alternate Escapes Recreation Center, Java Fitness at Gordon Fitness, Java Express, located on Chamberlain Avenue, and the newest location, Java Café, which recently opened on the first floor of Darling Hall. We are also happy to welcome Shishkebab Café to Signal Towers! Shishkebab Café offers both Mediterranean and American cuisine for breakfast and lunch. Other dining establishments include Bogey’s Grill at the Gordon Lakes Golf Course, Kegler’s Cafe at Gordon Lanes Bowling Center, Gordon’s Conference and Catering Center, Teresa’s Mexican Restaurant, Me Me & Bo Bo’s Chinese Express, Huddle House, and Dominoes Pizza. We are also fortunate to have such a fantastic library on Fort Gordon. Last year, Woodworth Consolidated Library was awarded Federal Library of the Year 2011 by the Library of Congress! What an amazing accomplishment – and it’s right here on our post! Renovations were recently completed at the library, and there are several fun events scheduled for this summer. FMWR also offers other services such as Child, Youth, and School Services, several fitness centers, a Recycling Center, Auto and Boat Storage, Auto Craft center, BOSS program and Recreation Center for our single Service Members, Get Outdoors Gordon, and Army Community Service which provides countless programs and support for our service members and their families. FMWR enriches the lives of all of us here in the Fort Gordon Military Community. All of these wonderful programs and services are available to us at minimal or no cost, and I would encourage everyone to get out and experience all that FMWR has to offer. Whether you are new to the Fort Gordon community, experiencing a deployment, or just looking to meet new people, you will always find something to do thanks to FMWR here on Fort Gordon. I am proud to not only be a member of this community, but to also work for this fantastic establishment, FMWR! Movie: Life of Pi, 2012, Director: Ang Lee, Rated: PG Start your summer off with fabulous book adaptation films. One such film based on Yann Martel’s 2001 fantasy adventure novel is Life of Pi. The film is about young Pi Patel’s account of his adventure on a lifeboat on the Pacific with a rather large Bengal Tiger oddly named Richard Parker. This simple story took on fantastical twists and turns. I have always been a fan of Ang Lee’s films but this one pushed my imagination. The film geek in me must note that the technical work in this film was visually stunning, emotionally stirring, and at times impossible to believe. Director Ang Lee worked diligently with amazing art, computer, and design crews to convey Martel’s original vision. Once seen, you still will not believe your eyes! This beautiful film took my breath away and took me on an adventure not only of survival, loss, spirituality, and self discovery. If you enjoy adventure films, this one is for you! Con artists have gone beyond identify theft and have branched out in the employment market. Almost every new application for employment requires online submission. Job seekers who use online job search websites must be careful to avoid a type of job scam in which the applicant is asked to accept payment to his or her bank account. These are known as payment – forwarding or payment – transfer scams. Here are some red flags: • Requests by a new employer to place startup funds or deposit paychecks into your account. • Requests you to forward, wire, or transfer money to a new employer. • Requests you transfer money and retain a portion for payment. And: • Look for anything unusual in the offer: misspelled words, no company logo, email address or official business address located on the job offer. • Beware of a signed offer that does not list a phone or fax number. • Beware of requests for Social Security numbers or driver’s license information, especially if you have not met your employer.
If you are a victim of a JOB SCAM, please consider the following: • Close all bank accounts where the scam took place. • Order a credit report from all three bureaus at annualcreditreport.com. Taking the Breath Out of Us: An Interview with Arial Marsh, Teen Author Molly Swift, Editor
When did you discover you were passionate about writing? I am the oldest of four children; my two little sisters and I got very creative when it came to entertaining ourselves. Barbie, understandably, was a favorite. Around the time I was 12, I wasn’t interested in just any hazardously slapped together plot line, or the classic clichés of prom night or getting married – oh no, our games had to have structure, climaxes, and relationship drama that went beyond Disney’s standards. Since my sisters seemed to always forget the ‘rules’ I made (I was a
bossy child, I admit it) I decided to write down an outline of what we should play. I drew up sketches of the characters and sewed the special outfits they’d wear; I took markers and drew on the dolls to change their appearance to match, I wrote down note cards full of details surrounding their lives, and my sisters were nice enough to play into my growing fantasies. When they got too big for just Barbie games, I decided they needed to be a story. And so, for the first time of many, I typed ‘Chapter One’ into a computer. I still remember looking at the blank white on blue page. Never would I have thought it would lead to a novel, or actually three. What was the first novel you wrote? Tying into what I said earlier on Barbies and their plastic paradise of imagination, when the superhero based storyline they’d lived out for over a year had become too complex for frozen faces to represent, I put it on paper. I still have the original three page manuscript I wrote at 13, complete with crayon cross-outs and a sloppy signature. I typed it up, and decided it needed more. I never thought my ‘70 pages at most’ story would become a trilogy where the smallest book was 80 thousand words! It had started as The Protectors; a smashup of science experiments, aliens, and the every single free hour I could sneak away to my desktop. It has everything from political agendas to classic teen angst. And the best part? It wasn’t written by some 30 year old attempting to get into the mindset of their teen years. I wrote it from age 13 to 15. I was a teen, I was writing a fantastical sci-fi fiction that wasn’t made to mirror teen life, but was teen life. Now, it is The Protectors Trilogy – a Young Adult (12+) novel I hope to get into publishing by the end of this year. To publish Take the Breath Out of Me at the age of 17 is quite an accomplishment! How did it feel when you discovered it was really happening? I cannot even put it into words, and that’s something that should be easy for me! When I got that call from my publisher’s CEO, when I signed that contract, when nine months later the first prototype copy was mailed

to me, I can only describe it as how a mother might feel when her child is born. (In ten years or so I’ll be able to confirm that!) It was looking at the concrete evidence that yes, all that work you put in, times when you wept over the keyboard overcome with turmoil, it was all worth it. Can you give us a brief synopsis of the storyline? Miki Johnson, a Japanese ‘refuge’ and self-professed ‘street prize’ finds her only recently stable life shattered at the disappearance of her boyfriend, Drake. (Don’t roll your eyes here! This is much more than your average Danielle Steel novel.) When Miki’s health begins to suffer, she doesn’t buy into the prescribed depression. She knows it is something more, that there is a darkness behind all the devastation she has suffered. That is where the book begins, at the cumulative epitome of our lowest points, faced with a choice that would be one of life and death, for Miki and thousands of others caught in the snares of the virus only few even know of. Throughout the course of the novel you discover more about her, a past capable of mirroring your own while still bringing you into this captivating world of secrets, abuse, love, and above all, hope. The cure, the twist, as any good novel has, is something only my father was able to see coming, and ‘only because he knows me so well.’

Swap&Assist Closing During the Summer
The Swap & Assist Shop will be closed from June 6 at 2 p.m. until August 15 at 10 a.m. The Swap & Assist Shop – located behind the PX, in Building 39101, at Avenue of the States and 40th Street – provides items to all military personnel and is staffed entirely by volunteers. Donated items such as clothing, shoes, baby items, and household goods are available free of charge to military pay grades E-4 and below. Military pay grades E-5 and above, retirees, as well as their Family Members, are asked to bring merchandise of equal or higher value to swap. The Swap and Assist Shop has been in operation for 39 years; it was started by Mrs. Ruth Chandler. Donations of usable clothing and household items are always welcome. Hook a Soldier on Golf The program runs every Saturday morning except holidays. All Soldiers are invited to enjoy a free hour of golf instruction on the driving range.
