EDITOR’S NOTE Conviction: The Wave of Your Future

A new year is upon us. We started resolutions last month that we probably won’t keep. (I’ll give you guys the benefit of the doubt of a month ... But I have a bit of hope you’ll prove me wrong! It’s there, trust me, right in my heart... See? Right.... Right there... Theerree it is! To the left.) In any event, it’s at least that time of year that sparks positive conviction for change in one’s life. It’s a task within itself to carry out any undertaking of change or growth, especially from the norms you’re used to. Maybe you’ll decide to dedicate more time to the gym. Maybe you’ll paint more, go back to school, redo your resume and go for the new job or that raise, at the least. That flyer to that yoga class down the street seems real enticing ... Too bad you have to go down the street, though. Why couldn’t it be right downstairs? Sheesh! Time to add “walking more” to that list. Whatever you choose to do to provide positive change to your life for 2014, hold strong to it. Let it be the stepping stone to further and greater change. “Walking More” leads to “Running More,” which eventually leads to mountain climbing. Time to climb that mountain, man! Strive for the top this year. When you get to the top, and the (bad) air gets thin and you’re closer to the top, you can kick fear in the face and look straight down at the bottom, not even to revisit it, but to just remind yourself that on the ground lies a past of wishful thinking, excuses, negative energy and people and Dreams wearing cloaks of Hope that only mask the power of becoming Reality. All at the bottom, on stagnant ground. And right at that foot of the mountain... That one groove that got you started on the way up... That Conviction resides right in there. Get your foot into that groove of Conviction and start climbing. 2014 is the journey upward. And when you kiss 2015 on the chin, let it know you’re not done just yet ... The New York Ambassador, E-Hoody, spoke with FunktheFormula Magazine about his latest project, Hoody Season, and his plans for the new era of Hip Hop. Brace yourselves ... and dress warm.

What made you want to get into hip hop? What/who were your influences? I began to love Hip-Hop as a child, by 5 to 6 years old. Both my mother and father played a big part in my diversity. My mother was Miss Jamaica Independence and has a great taste of music. She introduced me to reggae which I use to blend into my music. My father would play the piano, drums and other musical instrumentals around me from a baby to age 3 which made me musically inclined since a child. I remember reciting Biggie’s “Juicy” and Nas “It Ain’t Hard To Tell.” I was born in Hollywood, Florida and when I was 5 years old I moved to Laurelton, Queens, New York . The environment of trains, streets and the people made me vibe and build the spirit and foundation of Hip-Hop. I started writing rhymes at age 12. My favorite artist of all time and the one who influenced me the most musically was Nas. I plan on one day doing a track with him for Hip-Hop and Queens in the future. My other biggest influences were Biggie, Tupac, Jay-Z, Rakim, Top Dollaz, Jadakiss, Styles P, Gangstarr, Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang, T.I., Young Jeezy, DMX and much more. How did the name E-Hoody come about? My first name is Elisha which the E stands for and people always called me E and I always rocked Hoody’s since a youngin’, so I told everyone to call me, E-Hoody. In the streets they call me Hoody or “Hoody Season”. The word Hoody for me represents the struggle and the people in the hood. My music is me plus the struggle so throw ya hoody on because it’s “Hoody Season” and listen to E-Hoody! You’re from NY but currently in ATL. Has the change in terrain had any bearing on the music you’ve created up to now? Yes, when I came to Atlanta they had a different sound than what I was delivering. It’s more about the beat and vibe it gives you in the club. At the time I was attending Georgia Perimeter College, shout out to Decatur and Clarkston Campus. I released a mixtape called “Queenz Survival Kit” and people were listening to it and showing me

love down here because what I’ve learned about Atlanta is that they have a wide variety of people that support each other. Atlanta is very supportive and in 2010 is when I released my first Atlanta record called “I’m Faded” and last year I made “Mickey D’s and Blunts” a song that had a ATL vibe and sound to it. As I grew as an artist, I learned how to keep my NY state of mind and vibe while still showing love and making songs both New York and Atlanta can feel. Laurelton to A-Town! The big hip hop debate right now is NY hip hop possibly falling off, and Trinidad James actually made some controversial comments stating that ATL and southern music runs hip hop and NY has lost its touch. What are your thoughts on that? New York and NY Hip-Hop will never fall off as long as I’m alive! I feel like NY just needs to support each other more and it’s crazy because in 2009-2010 I sent my song “New Money” to 107.9ATL and they played it on a show called “Battle Grounds” but I sent my song “Hip-Hop The Revolution” and previous songs to NY radio stations and they didn’t even respond. It’s no bash to NY radio stations but you have to help promote and play upcoming NY artists. We as New York artists, especially the new ones, have to create a new wave. We need a new sound and we have to get back to having fun. We’re too serious all the time because New York’s a serious place but let’s have some fun while still being us. I get love in Atlanta and New York and I feel everyone’s testing us because everyone wants to see New York come back but we as New Yorkers got stop hating on each other and work together and make great music. It doesn’t matter who wants to talk reckless because at the end of the day, it’s about your music and I’m focused on making the best music for New York, Atlanta and the whole world. Hoody Season!!! Tell us about your new project, Hoody Season. What’s the overall idea behind it and what can hip hop fans expect from the project? “Hoody Season” is an album broken into the 4 seasons which represents Winter with topics such as (Streets, Mary Jane and Ladies), Spring (Consciousness, Life and Revolutionary), Summer (Partying, Clubbing and Having Fun), and Fall (Personal, Reflectiveness and Honesty). The album is executive produced and most of the songs are produced by new music producer, Knox. Me 8


and Knox are the architects of this album, designing it to be both a successful and classic album. Hip-Hop fans can expect real Hip-Hop tracks like “Throw Ya Hands Up,” “Hip-Hop The Revolution,” “Black Poet feat. Malik Killam,” “Music Is My Life feat. Amani” and “Life’s So Vicious feat Top Dollaz.” This album is also done in the memory of my blood brother, Top Dollaz aka T.O.P (The Official Prince) who passed away last year. He was one of the coldest cats on the mic and an amazing person. TOP!!!!! I been working on this album for a while now and I know people will love it. It’s exactly what Hip-Hop fans need and it’s diverse where all music listeners can feel and relate to if they enjoy great music. The amazing album cover was designed by Carolyn Wilson. The Album features Top Dollaz, Paradox, Elijah Wilson, Ras Marvin, StarLife, Malik Killam, EliJAH and Amani McCray. How will E-Hoody set himself apart from his peers going into 2014 and beyond? I plan on setting myself apart from my peers by staying true to my art and not stressing money or fame. If you could go on tour in any country in the world, which would that be and why? I would have to say United Kingdom. I been building buzz and already been having my songs played there. Big shout out to DJ Shaun Pickles, he was the first to share my music with U.K. I picked U.K because they’re very open to new music and they don’t judge an artist by materialism as much but by their music. What would you say has been the hardest part of coming up in music and how have you fought through it? The hardest part is breaking in the game. The industry only allows a few artists at a time. What I’ve stopped doing is waiting on others to help me get in the game. I’m creating my own lane and building my brand. I’ve expanded my business from music to 9

clothing and film. I keep God first and allow him to guide me. What would you feel has been your greatest accomplishment to date? My biggest accomplishment to date is starting and running the label Street Prophets Entertainment Corp., with my mother, Marilyn Solomon. What is some advice you can give to any artists starting out? To all artists, don’t wait on anyone to help your career. Start your own YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, etc. and build your numbers. The industry has a lot of people who talk

but never show action so work on your career every day. You have to be both a businessman and an artist. Invest in yourself and love what you do. Be diverse and always expand your music. Well, let me start by saying I am NOT a Beyonce fan. I do not DISLIKE Beyonce either. I am a person that is into “soulful” singing, like NO ONE of this generation. The Glady’s, Patti’s and Aretha’s of the world are long gone ... But I revisit their music whenever I want to hear that “sound”. As mentioned I am not a fan...but I dig what Beyonce is .... A powerhouse. Aside from all the secret-society-Illuminati-BS you hear of HOW she controls people with her telekinetic-musical/vocal compositions and her OBVIOUS symbolic-Baphometexorcist-stylized-videos...you have to admit under the shapely-safely-promoted-lightskinned-girl-next-door-mixed-with-I-canget-rachet-and-raunchy marketing scheme, another genius marketing scheme was born. A return to selling ALBUMS. WTF AM I TALKING ABOUT, RIGHT? Well you rude bastard, I’m gonna tell you. Beyonce released an album digitally WITHOUT marketing because her celebrity ALONE IS the marketing. In other words ... Beyonce KNEW her fans would FLOCK to buy her album once wind of it being out surfaced. But let me take it a step further: A. She capitalized from word of mouth marketing. How much does THAT COST? NOTHING. B. Videos are marketing tools and in itself generates no actual money ... Well, not directly unless you sell the video. Beyonce would normally (like most artists) do maybe three to four EXPENSIVE ASS videos to promote the album, one released to set off the single, and another to back up the album’s release. The two other videos would push the two other singles off of the album (if ya paid attention this is how its done). Why do all of that when you can package the videos with the album and sell it TOGETHER? People LOVE feeling like they got more for their buck ... and she did just that. C. But the greatest part of this marketing was the fact that she did videos for every FUCKIN’ song. I don’t know how she spent 30


her money, but doing a video in Coney Island could NOT have cost as much as going to some remote island to flop her half naked wet ass around on a private beach. If she could have done those 17 videos with a budget close to doing those four EXPENSIVE ass videos ... Fuck it ... Or even if it wasn’t ... It DOESN’T MATTER. She sold the videos and album TOGETHER. And she’s sold you an ALBUM. D. Yep, Beyonce sold you a full BODY of work...different from the marketing schemes of record labels (WHAT’S THAT AGAIN??) which sell you singles. Oh yeah, musicians put OUT albums..well, sometimes .... But the record label is only concerned with selling singles .... Not your full body of work. That’s why they want catchy songs (ARTISTS IMPORTANT INFO HERE) and not COMPLEX CONCEPT albums (ARTISTS MORE IMPORTANT INFO). Beyonce did videos to each FUCKIN’ SONG to also draw a “VISUAL” of what these songs mean ... Thus ... Bringing you her VISION. Isn’t that what music does ANYWAY? Well, for the slow ones, she said ... THIS IS WHAT I MEAN, IDIOT! Notice that I didn’t touch the fact she did this digitally. Well, I think we ALL know that she cut out the MIDDLE-MAN and showed artists that they can sell music WITHOUT a record label. Ahhhh, I hear the sweet sound of nails all over getting hammered into coffins of record labels everywhere. Target don’t wanna sell her album cause it was released already? Dumb move, Target...you still could’ve made money from the people who still buy ..... CD’S....... Wait a minute, YEAH, who still DOES THAT? But it is the holiday season, dummies ... And people like stocking stuffers...which you CAN’T do with a digital download unless you put it on a drive, and somehow...that doesn’t translate the same way when giving someone a gift. In “GRAND CLOSING” (wack Jay-Z reference) I’d like to say ... We can all criticize Beyonce & Jay-Z for their music ... But their marketing schemes this past year have been phenomenal. They both proved that you can use your celebrity to foster a marketing scheme that can set off the NEW RULES of the game. If you wanna learn anything from them ... Take THAT and soak THAT game up. Stop worrying about dudes cars, and her hair .... Learn how to run THE WORLD (Oh my god, that was corny).

When you see the eclectic style of Ajzha Kahn, you can’t help but think, “she MUST do something creative, she must be a designer.” (No? Well, then perhaps you lack vision, my friend, handle that!) Not only did Ajzha provide some great, exclusive new pieces for our fashion spread for this issue, but she got a chance to briefly talk to us and give us a tidbit of who Ajzha Kahn is.

How did you get you start as a designer? I learned to sew in the 10th grade. Once I started, I never stopped. Did you always know that you were a designer? I realized I wanted to be a designer in the 8th grade. Once I began designing continuously, that’s when I knew what I was here for. How would you describe your design style? My design style is classic with a touch of couture. How has being a designer molded and shaped your life? Being a designer has helped me to step into being who I am. On the outside it’s clear that I do something creatively. What is your current collection called? My current collection is called “Cultures of Life.” How can a person get in contact with you? ell 2013 was a fabulous fashionable year with some hot trends, but it’s time to spunk it up some more with 2014 on the horizon. A dash of the hottest new trends for spring and summer mixed with a splash of those new eye popping colors will spice up your wardrobe into delectable fashionable cuisine.

Not so much slogans as statements, the trend of plastering words across everything from clutch bags to knits continues into Spring / Summer 2014. We suspect it doesn’t matter much what you say, as long as you’re saying it loud and clear. The aim is to draw eyes and generate interest, never was there a better conversation starter than a boldly lettered article of clothing. LET’S SPEAK THROUGH OUR CLOTHING.

Supercharged posies, tattoo blooms and 3D blossoms for Spring/Summer 2014, Florals have had a serious makeover. Do mind the herbaceous boarder but forget about chintzy prints and frumpy frocks.

Pastels, and pumped up fondant shades were seen across countless runways in major fashion cities. Wear head to toe for an off-kilter take on girly.

Satin and metallic’s in every color of the rainbow brought a heavy dose of glamour to everything this season. For a cool shiny vibe go for a satin suit at work shiny fabrics from day to night, these pieces are far too pretty to be saved for best. Shine bright like a diamond.

Transparency is key once again this season as designers continue to persuade us to flash the flesh. Tops, skirts, dresses, and shirts basically anything goes as long as it’s see-thru.

The corrugated skirt is the star buy of spring and summer 2014, indeed no wardrobe will be complete without one. Luckily all sensibilities from upscale lady to grungy hipster are catered for with mini, maxi and midi hemlines.

D

esigners take a modern twist on the traditional for spring 2014 by pairing soft pastels with vivid brights to create a colorful equilibrium. Inspired by a mixture of blooming flowers, travels abroad and strong, confident women, designers use color to refresh, revive and defy conventional wisdom. “This season, consumers are looking for a state of thoughtful, emotional and artistic equilibrium,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “While this need for stability is reflected in the composition of the palette, the inherent versatility of the individual colors allows for experimentation with new looks and color combinations.”

With With that that being being said, said, the the popular popular colors colors are: are: Three very adaptable pastels sit on one end of the palette, and, because we are so accustomed to seeing them as nature’s background, they can be creatively combined with any other color in the spectrum. Placid Blue, like a picture-perfect, tranquil and reassuring sky, induces a sense of peaceful calmness, while Violet Tulip, a romantic, vintage purple, evokes wistful nostalgia. Similar to the verdant shade of springtime foliage, Hemlock, a summery, ornamental green, provides a decorative touch that’s very different from the greens of recent seasons. Pair any of these versatile pastels with a bolder hue for an “au courant” look. Sand, a lightly toasted and amiable neutral, conjures images of the beach and the carefree days of summer. Try pairing Sand with Hemlock for perfect, natural balance. Paloma serves as a quintessential neutral, interesting enough to be worn alone or combined with any color for sophisticated poise. Cayenne, a high-pitched red, adds a dash of spicy heat to neutrals, and heightens the excitement when mixed with Freesia, a blazing yellow that is sure to illuminate wardrobes this season. A tropical, floral-inspired shade, Freesia’s warmth and energy help set the stage for Celosia Orange, an optimistic, spontaneous hue. Pair Celosia Orange with Violet Tulip for a captivating vision, much like the setting summer sun. The palette is brought full circle with Radiant Orchid, a bold counterpart to Violet Tulip, and Dazzling Blue, a scintillating, polar opposite to Placid Blue. Gerissa Russell came into this world February 21, 1993. She is the oldest with one brother Gerald Russell Jr.. She is the Daughter of Gerald Russell Sr. and Towanda Russell. A child of God is what I live by I speak the word of God everywhere I go. I attend the Art Institute of Atlanta GA and Fashion Retail Management is my major and Fashion is my passion. Some of my skills are Budgeting (fashion shows, retail shows), Planning (fashion shows), Marketing, Networking (fashion videos), Fashion Styling (men and women), Fashion sketching, Cosmetics. My accomplishments DECA (Fashion Marketing Organization) - President and Student leader, FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America)- President, Honors Student, Passion for Fashion High School Portfolio Scholarship Winner at Art Institute of Atlanta GA, Passion for Fashion Design Competition for Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Florida placed 3rd place nationals, National America Miss Pageant 1st runner up Miss Personality and Spirit Award, Big and Beautiful Pageant crowned Miss Princess, Coordinator of Prom fashion shows in High school, Student Ambassador of the fashion group at the Art Institute of Atlanta. I am a young lady that walks by faith not by sight. I smile all the time and I’m always a happy person, because Happiness is where we find it, but rarely where we seek it.
