CAFE BRASILEIRO Originally opened in 1934 by the state of São Paulo to promote Brazilian coffee, Brasileiro is the oldest cafe in Fukuoka. “Our number one priority is coffee,” says second generation owner Yoshitada Nakamura. The coffee, select blends of high quality beans, is roasted daily. Since its founding, the cafe has offered homemade Western dishes, including standards like minced cutlet (¥950) and omelet rice (¥930) and new additions like the Italian sandwich set (¥800). Preserving tradition while trying new things is what keeps customers coming year after year.

TODOROKI SAKETEN YAKUIN STAND Last March, the boutique liquor shop Todoroki Saketen added a kakuuchi (standing bar) area called Yakuin Stand. The kakuuchi area is directly inside the shop, while the merchandise—100 varieties of rare sake, natural wine, craft beer and more, is in the back. Manager Ikumasa Ichiki says the shop’s focus is on showing customers the producers behind the drink. The kakuuchi offers 15~20 kinds of seasonal sake in smaller 45ml or 90ml glasses so you can sample as many as you like. You can also drink wine, beer and shochu, and the shop holds two or three events a month.

토도로키 사카텐 야쿠인 Stand!
훌륭한 주류만을 엄선하여 판매하는 토도로키 사카텐 본점이 작년 3월, 야 쿠인 St a n d!를 오픈했다. 본점의 분 위기를 응축시켜놓은 듯 한 가게 내 부 에 는 가 볍 게 한 잔 즐 길 수 있 는 멋진 카 쿠 우치 코너가 마련되어 있고 그 안쪽에 사케 약 100종류, 세계 각국의 비오 와인, 소주, 크래프트 맥주 등을 판매하는 코너가 자리 잡고 있다. 카쿠우치에서는 사케의 경우 15~20종류가 상시 준비되어 있고 90ml, 45ml 잔 중에서 고를 수 있어 여러 종류의 술을 맛보기에 딱이다. 물론 그 외 와인과 맥주, 소주도 준비되어 있다. とどろき酒店 薬院Stand! HAKATA RATANMEN MARUTAN
Here, in the noodle mecca of Fukuoka, Marutan has created a brand new genre called ratanmen - an original combination of Hakata ramen and tantanmen. The first thing you notice is the aroma and flavor of sesame. Every morning, the chefs make sesame paste from fresh ground sesame seeds and vegetable oil. This is then mixed into a soup made from fragrant vegetables which pairs well with the thin Hakata-style noodles. Since the broth contains no pork bones, it does not have the trademark odor that some people dislike. The minced pork topping is stir fried in homemade ramen oil, red miso and ginger, and provides just the right amount of spice to the dish. If you prefer more spice, you can order a spicy ratanmen from the get-go or request spicy toppings such as Red Dragon sauce and spicy garlic. Since one bowl only costs ¥500, many patrons enjoy trying the different side dishes. Marutan is open until 04:00, so you can stop by anytime, day or night.

SUSHI TARO
When Japanese visit Fukuoka, sushi tops their “to eat” list. Fish here is abundant, extremely fresh and reasonably priced. Increasingly, more foreign visitors are also coming to sample the double delight of sushi and sake. Not far from Hakata Station is Sushi Taro, a must-stop sushi shop. Owner Taro Fujii, who previously trained in Fukuoka and Spain, says the secret to Fukuoka’s cuisine is the city’s geography - Fukuoka is surrounded on all sides by great fishing grounds. To maximize the flavor of each ingredient, different types of vinegar are added to the rice depending on the topping, true to the Edo style (which originated in old Tokyo). Fujii uses the best local seafood (as well as premium quality tuna flown in from Tokyo) and accents the food with chic dishes from all over Japan. The chef’s menu comes with five to seven items, including 11 pieces of sushi (numbers change daily). To drink, there is Lebanese wine and 15 kinds of sake. Book early (by phone or via hotel reception) - there are only eight counter seats!

일본 국내 관광객들도 후쿠오카・하 카타 를 여행할 때에는 초밥을 즐거움으로 삼는다고 한다. 하카타의 초밥은 생선 종류가 다양하고 품질이 좋은 데다 가격도 비교적 합리적이다. 스시 타로의 오너 후 지이 타로씨도 바다와 접하고 있어 다채로운 해산물을 손쉽게 접할 수 있는 하카타에 가게를 꾸렸다. 후지이씨는 후쿠오카와 스페인에서도 경험을 쌓은 뛰어난 장 인. 생선의 맛을 이끌 어내는 수고 로움 을 마 다치 않 는 에 도마 에 스 타 일을 고수 하 며 밥은 각기 5 ~ 6 종 류 의 식초 로 간 을 한 뒤 생선과의 궁합을 고려해 선택한 다. 이렇게 해서 완성된 초밥을 입에 넣으면 그 맛에 절로 웃음이 나올 정도. 여러 재료 중에서도 참치는 츠키지 시장에서 공수하는 등 오너만의 철학도 확고하다. 오마카세 코스는 5~7가지의 요리와 초밥 11개(요리와 초밥 개수는 달라질 수 있음), 미소시루까지 포함되어 있다. 술은 사 케 약 15종 이외에도 최근 높이 평가받는 레바논 와 인 등도 준비되어 있다고 . 카 운터 8석이 전부이므로 반드시 미리 예약하도록 하자(전화 예약, 관광객은 숙박시설을 통해 예약).

柳川女兒節 야나가와 히나마츠리
Every year on Mar. 3, Hina (Doll) Festivals are held to pray for the health of young girls. The day is known as Momo no Sekku, a date that traditionally marked the coming of spring. The custom is said to have begun in the Heian period (794-1185) when people would try to drive away evil spirits by transferring them to dolls. Although the custom varies throughout Japan, families with young girls still display dolls today. Dolls are set up on Feb. 4, a date known as risshun (“onset of spring”) in the old calendar, and people celebrate by eating three mochi rice cakes in different colors: green, pink and white. In Yanagawa, the first Hina Festival for a baby girl is marked with sagemon—colorful hanging decorations that each family has passed down over generations. 12 | Fukuoka Now | #219 | March 2017

SAGEMON VIEWING In Yanagawa, a girl’s first Hina Festival is an important occasion. Sagemon are hung next to the doll stand, and a big celebration is held to pray for the child’s health. The tradition began at the end of the Edo period (1603–1868), when people who had baby girls began making decorations from cloth scraps and hanging them on either side of the doll stand. In Yanagawa, each sagemon has 49 (7x7) decorations (seven is a lucky number), which are often in the shape of auspicious creatures, such as rabbits and cranes. Nowadays, when spring draws near, everyone in town hangs the colorful sagemon in their homes and shops, making for a sight to behold. • 2/11 (Sat., Hol.) ~ 4/3 (Mon.) • Viewing spots have pink flags outside
festival OHINA-SAMA WATER PARADE During the Ohina-sama Water Parade, young girls dressed in kimono ride down canals in boats decorated with hina dolls. About 200 brightly dressed girls and their mothers glide along downtown Yanagawa’s canals, which are also decked out with sagemon, in 12 river boats. The boats float at a leisurely pace, making the parade a popular destination for shutterbugs looking to snap some pictures from the banks. • 3/19 (Sun.) *in case of rain: 3/26 (Sun.)
HINA-VIEWING BOAT TOURS Enjoy a 50-minute hina-viewing boat tour from Tsujimon to Okinohata. This unique opportunity will afford you a completely different view of the Hina Festival.
