Laughing It Up in Fort Myers I

ARRIVED FOR THE 9:30 SHOW, on a Saturday night. Although I had been to this location some time ago, I had no idea what to expect now that new owners Brian Corrion and Janice Rodriguez had taken over in late February. Upon entering, I found myself in the main room of the club. In front of me was a large bar and to the right, tables and the stage, which had the club’s logo painted in large block letters directly behind the mic.

As I looked around, I noticed pictures everywhere of the many comics who have graced the café. Brian gave me a quick lay of the land and suggested I sit wherever I like. I found a cozy seat at table 8. From that angle I could see the stage well, but also felt tucked away in the crowd. Before I knew it, the lights dimmed, the spotlight raised and the show started.

Because the stage is in the corner of the room, it doesn’t seem to matter where you sit. You get a good view of the comics and hear them well from just about anywhere in the club. Plus, the set up provided a great platform for comics to utilize the space for audience participation.

any new comic, but luckily had an affinity for marketing. With issues getting booked early on in his career, he started booking rooms himself, approaching restaurants and offering to put together a comedy act on one of their slow nights in exchange for the money collected at the door. Brian used that time to hone his craft. He would sometimes bring on an additional comic as backup to make the show more

Laugh In receives just under 20 calls a week from comics looking for a booking.

Brian took to the stage first. His demeanor is laid back, his presence collected. He’s ‘the guy next door,’ delivering punch lines with a quiet jab. After a few jokes, he introduces the first act of the night, who tonight happened to be Ron Feingold. Ron is from the Hermosa area north of Orlando. He does a lot of national touring and has worked with Carnival Cruise Lines. With a hybrid pompadour and flat top, he’s a bit in your face, direct and hilarious. He knows his craft and has everybody in stitches in no time. Next up was Duncan Jay from Melbourne. He’s crass, he’s quick witted, and he occasionally performs to music. What’s not to love? Plus, his face is very expressive and definitely gives him a unique style of comedy. It was amazing how he just bounced off questions from and insults at audience members, waited for them to respond, and then would snap back with a retort in an instant. Both comics and owner Brian Corrion were well above the quality of comedy I would have envisioned for little old Fort Myers. After the show, I had the opportunity to sit down with Brian and get more information about him and the café.

Brian Corrion has been in the business of comedy for over ten years. He got his start struggling like

entertaining. Brian explains that this is what’s called ‘building your voice’ in the industry. Before comedy became a way of life, Brian says he was a cereal entrepreneur. One day a friend, joking around, asked what he would do if he could have any dream job he wanted. He told him he would be a stand up comedian. He admitted it was never easy, but a passion, and he had to work a lot harder than the average guy to get up on stage and be funny. Eventually, Brian worked his way up to purchasing the Old Naples Comedy Club near Naples’ Tin City, a 50 seat room he worked three nights a week during season. But it gave him the taste for a bigger club. He figured that if you could add more chairs, he could have bigger name comics. Brian and Janice went searching for a new venue and found Laugh In. club, then called Groove Street Nightclub, was retiring and they bought Laugh In from him. The added benefit —it was already a club and so it came complete with everything they needed to operate instantly.

Many of the acts that perform at Laugh In come from around Florida, but some performers come from all over the country. Currently Laugh In receives just under 20 calls a week from comics looking for a booking. Big names such as Daniel Tosh from Tosh.0, David Brenner, Jimmi JJ Walker, Bobcat Goldthwait, and Marsha Warfield have worked the stage in the past at what is now the Laugh In Café. Even Steven Michael Quezada, who played DA agent Gomez on the TV show Breaking Bad has made his appearance. Brian says Quezada was a really cool guy to hang out with —very positive.

Y ou can catch shows regularly Thursdays at 7:30pm, and Friday and Saturdays at 7:30pm and 9:30pm. The Comedy Café offers a full bar and dinner. One Wednesday a month is open mic nights. In November, Laugh In is adding a kid’s magic show Saturday afternoons for children ages four to fourteen. Brian also plans on expanding the show schedule further by including showcase

nights where 6 professional comics come in doing a fifteen minute set each.

They have also added a murder mystery dinner theatre show, resembling the game of Clue. The audience gets to figure out who the murderer is. For added fun, Laugh In encour-

ages audience members to dress with the theme of the mystery.

Andy Gross will be perfroming at Laugh In for a one night only event. Andy is a nationally acclaimed, world class magician, and has had over a million and a half views on Facebook of his tricks. Greg Hahn, Marc Price and Dat Phan will be performing in the spring. Dat Phan was the winner of the very first season of Last Comic Standing. I asked Brian to fill me in on some of the details about his open mic nights. Brian says aspiring comics are welcome and should call Laugh In to book an appearance. They usually have around 12-14 slots available. All six new particpants coming to the next open mic are brand new, including a 60 year old woman in a motorized chair with MS. She wants to give it a try and she’s going for it. Brian says “It’s always great seeing the Open Mic’ers. Many have to try it once and they don’t know what to do. Some really prep for it and are very natural, and some you just have to sit back and laugh at them, not necessarily with them. But the show must go on.” •

Busting A Gut in Bonita Beach

Capt. Brien is indeed a certified boat captain who started his Florida business ventures at age 21 with a fleet of ten charter fishing boats on Marco Island.

WITH ALL THE NEGATIVITY GOING ONin the world, it doesn’t hurt to laugh once in a while. Here in Southwest Florida, there’s a place that specializes in making you laugh, and the good Captain would have it no other way. Capt. Brien’s Off the Hook Comedy Club has kept audiences in stitches since 2005, hosting both up-andcoming comedians as well as nationally known favorites.

Operating initially from its original location on Marco Island and more recently in its new North Naples home, Off the Hook has made a name for itself as a local hotspot for comedy. An impressive lineup of well-known acts are scheduled to appear soon, including Judy Tenuta (NOVEMBER 10-13), Michael Mack (NOVEMBER 2527, Pauly Shore (DECEMBER 8-11), and New Year’s Eve dinner shows with Owen Benjamin. Past stars to grace the Off the Hook stage include Amy Schumer, Ralphie May and one of the world’s current top comedians, Kevin Hart. “He wrote his Madison Square Garden show here,” says Off the Hook owner Capt. Brien, adding that Steve-O from the movie, Jackass performed his first live act ever at Off the Hook as well.

Spina acknowledges that building a comedy business on Marco Island was definitely a slow process. The club was initially opened to support his restaurant and drive traffic in the evening by offering something no one else was doing at the time. “It took a while to find an audience and clientele,” he remembers, with both the restaurant and club finding success. Building on that momentum, Spina moved Off the Hook off the island to North Naples in 2015 following a short time in Fort Myers. His Row restaurant accommodates 100 more patrons than his Marco Island location while continuing to offer a diverse slate of comedic talent to welcoming audiences.

“For us, one of the biggest factors [for our success] is that we are always doing the latest and greatest and newest acts,” says Brien, “We keep going after different genres. When a guy’s having a million followers on Twitter you’re bringing in a quality act. Everything has a kind of audience. We’re good at going after all different audiences, like urban style acts, more of a country blue collar type show, a variety of different genres of comedy. If we go after one, the next one is there. There’s a market for all of them.”

Off the Hook’s schedule is crammed full of exciting acts. Aside from the aforementioned Judy Tenuta and Pauly Shore shows, comedy audiences can look forward to appearances by Loni Love (NOVEMBER 17-19), Steve Sweeney (DECEMBER 21-23), Tom Arnold (JANUARY 5-7), and comedy great Louie Anderson (APRIL 27 – 30).

There’s also apparently enough of a market and audience in southwest Florida for another entertainment venue, a vision Capt. Brien actually had back on Marco Island. Finally, after years of permitting and building issues, the Southwest Florida Performing Arts Center (SWFL PAC) opened its doors in July 2016 in Bonita Springs. “This theatre is really new and we’re putting our hearts and souls

into it,” promises Capt. Brien, “Something totally different and new is going on.”

The sprawling 27,000 sq. ft. facility at the corner of Bonita Beach Road & Imperial Parkway includes the 400+ capacity SanJan Theatre (named for Capt. Brien’s parents Santos and Janice), function rooms for weddings, banquets and corporate events, as well as a restaurant called Teatro run by renowned award-winning chef Michael Psilakis.

The roster of up-and-coming performances rivals that of both Barbara B. Mann and Artis-Naples. November alone brings artists Blues Traveler (NOVEMBER 9), King’s X (NOVEMBER 10), rockers Puddle of Mudd (NOVEMBER 26) and the final round of Gulfshore’s Got Talent, a combined effort of SWFLPAC and Gulfshore Opera to search and discover young vocal talent (NOVEMBER 15). December events include folk legend Judy Collins (DECEMBER 11), Edwin McCain (DECEMBER 17), and two holiday concert shows with 15-year-old piano prodigy Ethan Bortnick (DECEMBER 18). Looking into 2017 the excitement builds with comedy legends Jerry Lewis (JANUARY 15) and Jackie Mason (FEBRUARY 21), as well as comedian Jim Breuer (MARCH 4), blues great Robert Cray (FEBRUARY 3), and Gulfshore Opera’s production of the operatic masterpiece Madame Butterfly (APRIL 2).

Capt. Brien says modestly, “We’re good at bringing in national shows and providing amazing food with it.” Besides Teatro, SWFL PAC also plans to bring in more celebrity chefs for tastings and events, plus offer culinary courses where the average person learns how make fresh pastas, desserts, etc. “We’re filling a niche there, where people didn’t realize we had such an extensive catering division. It’s all part of the test kitchen.”

As a communityminded business owner, Capt. Brien is dedicated to giving back, “We have a non-profit portion of the

company that my parents founded for underprivileged youth in the performing arts,” he shares. The aptly named Southwest Florida Performing Arts & Cultural Learning Center came about with the goal of offering educational, recreational and culinary arts enrichment programs. Communitybased theatre, children’s performances, celebrity chef showcases and adult continued educational culinary seminars are all in the works. Just this past summer, Brien says, “We did a technology camp that went really well, and gave away 15 scholarships to go to the camp.”

If you ever wondered about the ‘Captain’ moniker, yes Mr. Spina is indeed a certified boat captain who started his Florida business ventures at age 21 with a fleet of 10 charter fishing boats on Marco Island and by 2005 had opened his New England-style seafood restaurant. He sold off the boats when Off the Hook opened to concentrate on the club and restaurant before moving to Naples with ROW by Captain Brien & Crew and Off the Hook. The Impact of Stories

VERY YEAR, ADULTS AND TEENSacross the country read The Secret Life of Bees, and every year these readers close that book with an intense, wonderful sigh. Along with classics like To Kill a Mockingbird and The Outsiders, this novel is at the top of middle and high school reading lists in school districts across the country. Like the themes in those classics, Kidd has an ability to highlight issues personal to teens such as how dysfunctional situations can carve out personal identities, create special friendships, and foster unexpected love. And through her other intensely powerful books, The Mermaid Chair and the more recently published, The Invention of Wings, Sue Monk Kidd continues to embody the art of storytelling, using key moments in history and the first person female point of view as major components to her writer’s craft.

In addition to her fictional works, she is known for her non-fiction spiritual and inspirational writings, continuing the power of the story through Love’s Hidden Surprise, Firstlight, God’s Joyful Surprise, When the Heart Waits, and The Dance of the Dissident Daughter. She has also co-written a memoir, Traveling with Pomegranates, with her daughter, Ann Kidd Taylor, which chronicles both their mother-daughter relationship and individual journeys of self-discovery during travels to sacred places in Greece, Turkey, and France.

I had the opportunity to interview her about her craft prior to the Sanibel Island Writers Conference in November, where she will be the Keynote Speaker. She spoke to me recently on the phone about her journey and formula for creating memorable characters.

PAULA: You’ve said before that storytelling is such an important part of the novel, The Invention of Wings. The power of passing on our story and having our story witnessed by someone is very healing; it creates meaning in our lives. Writers resonate well to the art of storytelling. Were you always a storyteller?

SUE MONK KIDD:I think I grew up in an environment of storytellers and maybe I absorbed some of that through osmosis. My father was a great storyteller and I remember as a child just being spellbound by his stories which were really imaginative. I think that’s when I learned there is a great power in stories that we can tap. My original feeling about them was that they can cast this spell that you can never wake up from. And I really wanted to do that.

My earliest memory of wanting to write was wanting to create stories that had that kind of spell or effect on people. But later I came to understand more of the real power of stories: they are not only healing in many ways, but I think the way people change most readily is through hearing and taking in a story and making it their own. When people read my novels, I want them to learn something, gain some new knowledge, but what I’m really after is to grasp the heart of the reader because that is where all the power lies, in a person’s heart. I think

the shortest distance to that place in the heart is through a story, and that is the connection I finally made: If you really want to impact people, then you must tell them the story that really captures them. So, I don’t know if I have always been a storyteller, but it’s something that I have gravitated to and worked toward since I was a girl.

I understand you were a nurse at one time. Were you telling stories to patients then because, like you said, storytelling has a healing power?

You know that’s an interesting question that I never really have been asked before, and what comes to me is that I wasn’t really telling stories during that phase of my life; I was absorbing stories. I’ve often said that my time as a nurse taught me so much about the human capacity for suffering and the ability to heal. I learned so much about human beings at their extremes, and when I think about it now, I realize that every person I worked with brought a story. And I was going to be immersed in that story to some extent, and my approach to it was always through trying to enter and connect their story, not just who they are in this moment, but what is their history, who are they, beyond just the physical body — just see the whole person. It was later when I began writing at 30 that I began to try to find my voice and tell my own stories.

You do a lot of research prior to writing fictional novels, and since have written many spiritual and inspirational books like God’s Joyful Surprise, When the Heart Waits, and Dance of the Dissident Daughter Does this transparency and ability to write about your personal life and spirituality better allow for delving into fictional characters so realistically?

I think that it does for me. What I’ve realized is that every writer’s approach is so different, and what works for me may not work for someone else. I’m compelled, for some reason, to really reflect on my life and to really understand what my motivations are — why I’m doing what I’m doing, and what does it mean. I really want to try to make meaning out of my life, so that is what drives me to write memoirs for instance. The interesting thing is that it really translates over to my fictional characters because I treat them the same way.

At least so far, I have written my novels in first-person and so I try to drop deeply into my character and see the world through their eyes and feel it with their hearts. So, I need a lot of empathy to do that and I try to bring that same introspective spirit to it, you know, to really understand who they are and how to make meaning with their life. So from that standpoint, yeah, I think it’s helpful to be able to probe that human spirit not only in ourselves but in our characters.

Would that be advice you would give to writers — to explore their philosophical and spiritual side in order to create better characters?

It’s always hard for me to give advice. It’s like who am I to give advice? [LAUGHS]

“To have young people involved in my stories and my characters’ lives is a real gift for me.”

We are all so different and yet I think when it comes to the spiritual aspect of writing, for me, there is no difference in creativity and my spirituality; it is all bound up together. Sometimes I think when I write, that’s my prayer really, but I think if other writers want to go into themselves, that can only be a good thing. It’s not always a pleasant thing because we meet all this stuff we don’t particularly like about ourselves or want to encounter. But I’ve done that as well.

The most definitive place for writers to have is that lack of self-consciousness.

Exactly. So I guess my advice is kind of vague; it’s not really particular when it comes to that question. I say: go into yourself, explore, ask questions of yourself, reflect on your life, take the time to really do that, and see what wells up. I mean, writing is a conversation that you have with your soul, but it’s not always like that. Sometimes you are just pulling your hair out. But ideally, it’s really a conversation with this deeper part of ourselves.

As an English teacher, I always encourage my students to read The Secret Life of Bees because it’s perfect for their age. We have a book club at The Sanibel School with over 20 kids in it, including boys, and they are all reading the book. When you were writing these novels, did you envision teen readers reading these stories?

This was the biggest surprise I had when these books were published, particularly The Secret Life of Bees. I never saw it coming [LAUGHS]. When I was writing that novel, even though my character was 14 years old, I didn’t see it initially, and probably largely, as a young adult novel. I had never seen an adolescent young person show up to my book signings and I had never heard of one reading the book. Then one day a mother and daughter came to one of my book signings and the daughter was holding the book and she said, “Would you sign my book.” And I said, “Oh, did you read The Secret Life of Bees?” And she said, “Yes, and I got my mom to read it.” This is when I starting thinking, well, that’s interesting. And then suddenly, all of these young people were writing to me, talking about the book, or coming to my events, and it was very eye-opening for me.

Of course, this is amazing! And I never did anticipate it being on curriculums like it is. And so, this is a great surprise and wonderful thing for me because to have young people involved in my stories and my characters’ lives is a real gift for me.

That’s great and it introduces them to this bigger world of lifelong readership. These

connections these kids are making — they really get it, even though they are historic novels, they get it; they understand dysfunction and finding love in unique places.

It’s been fascinating to get the student’s responses to the books. I’ve gotten thousands and thousands of letters about The Secret Life of Bees. It has been out 12 years now and I’ve interacted with a lot of classrooms and what they tell me about their experience of the book is so moving to me. A lot of teachers tell me that the students got turned on to reading because of The Secret Life of Bees

What a gift to give the world. I bet every one of those letters are so special to you. Well, they are. I treasure them and I cry over them and I laugh over them. The things they tell me sometimes are almost confessional. One of the more moving letters came to me from East Africa, from a classroom of girls, all 16 and 17 years old whose parents had died in the AIDS epidemic. They read The Secret Life of Bees because of a teacher from America and they all wrote essays about it and sent them to me. I cried over every one of them. And you know the book is so much about the search for a mother and trying to find family and love in unlikely places and they [the East African girls] resonate. So yes, I can’t tell you how grateful I am for all the stories that I’ve heard from students and young people who’ve embraced that book particularly. Since we are talking about tragic moments and the finding of a mother... You have these stories take place during historic and ugly times, particularly in the South, and you create strong female protagonists from these times, so this sense of connection is really important for people to make. And now racial tensions are at the forefront of national news, so as a writer, will you continue to capture the voices of these historic moments?

I have and I think about that a lot. I certainly hope so. I realize that I gravitate to certain topics and themes when I write. It’s always been in me ever since I was in high school. I remember thinking that if I ever write a novel, it will be set in 1964, which was when I was about 16 years old, and I will address this issue of race, this pain really, of racial divide. I think I gravitated to both race and gender. Both of them are very important topics for me and I can’t help but feel kind of a social responsibility about it as a writer. I grew up in the South. Racism is the great wound and sin of the South, and indeed really, the great wound and original sin of America. I did write about it in The Secret Life of Bees, and with The Invention of Wings, I wanted to return to the origins of racism, which is slavery, and try to understand and do what I could to tell a story around that particular wound and how we can begin to address that and maybe inspire people to do that. I’m sure I will probably return to that again, but I’m equally interested in gender equality, and empowering particularly girls and women, so I’m sure that will be a big part of what I’m doing, too. Many writers are looking forward to hearing you speak as the keynote speaker for the Sanibel Island Writers Conference. What are some highlights that you will be talking about at the conference?

I’m going to talk very personally about the writing life, and my experience of it, and try to extrapolate from that some thoughts that can translate to other writers. Again, I guess I’m approaching it as, “I’m going to tell you a story, my story, about writing and hope that you can identify with some of it and then take what is yours to take from it.” It’s a highly abridged story of my writing life, but I’m going to focus in on what inspired me to write, how I came to write, and some of the challenges I’ve had as an aspiring writer when I was first setting out — things I’ve learned over the years. I’m going to talk specifically about my novels, and where the seed of inspiration came from, and some of the things we need in our life in order to sustain the writing life. So much of it is about courage. My presentation will be an abridged story of my life as a writer trying to inspire other writers. •

If you can somehow effectively juggle a family with a music career you are indeed a rarity in the music business. If you can then juggle your musical career between your solo work and that of a longtime critically acclaimed group you are in quite select company.

But for Rhett Miller, that’s been his life for over two decades, the last 15 of which has seen him routinely releasing solo albums when his main squeeze Old 97’s are either off the road or coming from another stretch of touring.

Now Miller is branching out again, possibly writing for the page and not for the ear. It’s not a radical departure as he’s been published in an array of magazines including Salon and even Sports Illustrated.

“My secret dream to write fiction is something that I’m going to focus on and try and do that in some of this down time,” Miller, appearing at the Sanibel Island Writers Conference at Florida Gulf Course University, November 4 told this writer in an interview this past summer.

It’s unclear what direction such fiction might head, but Miller explained how a recent trip to Cuba was “eye-opening” for him.

“It really made me feel like I had been so isolated in my life and to realize that just 90 miles off the coast of Florida there’s this country that has gone through all of the massive hardships they’ve gone through,” Miller said. “Especially in the last 20 years, but for decades, and how much of that falls on the shoulders of the American people, the American government. That was hard and it made me wish I had been more socially aware and politically aware.

“But it was also really inspiring to see how these people responded to everything they’ve been through. Generally, Cubans have such a positive attitude. They take these hardships and they turn them into music and poetry and dancing. And it helps that they don’t have wi-fi and they’re just finally getting hand held devices. Every night people are sitting out in the streets playing guitars and playing music with each other and singing. It’s a real beautiful culture and I was so glad. It made me appreciate just how good I have it here.”

That traveling might have in part fueled the title of his recent studio album, The Traveler , his fifth since 2002 and the follow-up to 2012’s The Dreamer . Miller said the album wasn’t arduous to make, but more of a labor of love thanks to working with Black Prairie, a band Miller found instant chemistry with.

“It came about very quickly,” Miller said. “I had a big batch of songs that were the songs the 97’s hadn’t wanted and they wound up being a pretty cohesive unit. It was a kind of sweet batch of songs with tinges of tortured songs in there. But working with Black Prairie was so easy. Musically, they’re such a strong unit and they’ve worked together for so long that it was really cool to get to slide into that band and be a part of it.”

arts MUSIC www.ftmyersmagazine.com 25 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2016

Miller said touring behind The Traveler was also great. The only downside, logistically of course, is being away from his family. But he, as well as his family, realizes it comes with the vocation.

“When the kids were little I made a point to stay at home more because they were just more work and I needed to be around and help more,” Miller said. “Now that they’re older they’re more self-sufficient and they’re more aware of my job and its requirements and they’re more forgiving about it. That part of it’s easier. I think they kind of can handle it better.

“But I just miss them, they’re so much fun right now, they’re these human beings that have these ideas and thoughts and it’s great to be around them. And in the blink of an eye they’ll just be gone. It’s harder on me I guess.”

Perhaps Miller’s biggest strength from a songwriting aspect came from launching his proper solo career in 2002 with The Instigator . This meant songs which might not work best for Old 97’s would end up finding a home somewhere.

“I guess the trick is I started doing the solo shows and recording in 2001 and 2002 because I had all these songs that the band didn’t want. And that’s still the model for the solo career; it’s

whatever the band doesn’t want becomes a solo record. So because of that I don’t really have to think about it much.

“The only thought process is: What band do I hire? What producer do I hire?Who does the sound? And that’s fun because usually I’ve just come off from making a band record that’s all about democracy and capitulation and everybody having veto power. It’s nice to just go in and be dictatorial about it being a solo record.”

Miller toured behind The Traveler earlier this year and said some of the new material took on a life on its own onstage.

“It’s always like that. There’s a handful of songs that I think are the strongest songs on the album and then they just don’t translate into the live performance as well,” Miller said.

“And then there are always some songs that always jump out that the audience just really respond to. I had a feeling that ‘Most In The Summertime’ would be a really good live song and that has really been the case. But then some of the more kind of tortured, pensive stuff doesn’t ever find its way onto a set list because I just don’t play those kind of shows. I tend to want to make set lists that make people happy and make for a fun night out.”

As for Old 97’s... The group toured spo-

radically in 2015, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the studio album Wreck Your Life. Miller enjoyed the experience even if playing an album in its entirety is something he’s rarely done. He said Old 97’s was close to completing a new studio album, one Miller described as “the hungover Sunday morning to [2014’s] Most Messed Up being a drunken Saturday night.”

Miller explained that the only big thing left to do for the new band album, aside from mastering the record, was coming up with an album title. Oddly enough it’s not something that comes easy for the songwriter.

“It’s so weird to me as a songwriter because I can write an album that has thousands of words, but then coming up with two to four words to sum it all up or to name it is so hard,” Miller said with a laugh. “I guess it’s the old saying of ‘quantity versus quality.’ I can come up with a lot of words, but to come up with two perfect words for it is a lot harder.” •

Rhett Miller will be performing a free concert at 6pm on November 4 in Schein Hall at BIGARTS during the 11th Annual Sanibel Island Writers Conference. The Writers Conference is at BIG ARTS and the Sanibel Island Public Library, November 3-6. BIGARTS is located at 900 Dunlop Rd. on Sanibel. For information, call 590-7421.

I’m no expert, but I think I know talent when I see it —and I see it here. Visually, The Woodwork gives a unified vibe; musically, the same. Their rapport with one another shows. You could see these guys, even if they weren’t in a band together, hanging out in some beatnik bar, drinking vintage vino or enjoying a craft brew. Their shows cater to folks with eclectic tastes, hipsters open to something they haven’t really seen before. The crowds at their gigs are laid back, appreciating something different.

The band members have considerable musical talent, but it’s not their individual talent that makes them so enjoyable to watch it’s the fact they work so well together. There are those groups of musicians that read each other flawlessly, those that can shoot a look to one another on stage and, almost like telepathy, know what each is thinking about where to take the song on this night. You could ask any musician and they would tell you that every performance is unique. It’s an overall feeling for that night, that stage. It’s more than knowledge of your instrument. If the band members don’t have chemistry with one another, the music won’t either. These guys have certain chemistry. They offer something to audiences that we don’t get much any more, originality.

Time is overdue that Southwest Florida had a new band worth a more regional or national level of attention. It’s possible these guys, from Naples, could make that leap.

It always impresses me when original bands are actually accepted into rotation at local venues, because it’s not easy to get paid in this town if that’s what you do. Music venue managers tell musicians that they don’t ‘do’ original music because the crowds in Florida don’t want that; they want music they know, music catering to tourists. The fact that The Woodwork is gaining popularity says that their sound can be easily accepted and appeals to a wide audience.

The band is relatively new, establishing themselves as a group only a short nine months ago. Members of The Woodwork include Taylor Freydberg (vocals & guitar), Christina Ortega (vocals), Julio Pintos (upright bass), and Mayo Coates (percussion).

According to Mayo, the band formed during a lovers’ quarrel. He was kidding of course. Pretty much through our entire interview this group is lively and fun, joking and looking as though they feel quite at home in the back room of Point Ybel Brewery, where I had just taken in their

STILLSBY HERNAN

They tell me one of their influences includes The Devil Makes Three, an American band that mixes bluegrass, old time country, folk blues, ragtime jazz, and rockabilly. Christina explains that she feels The Woodwork’s sound stems from Mayo and Julio coming from a Jazz background, Taylor bringing the group a folk influence, and noting their use of harmonies. Actually, she says, their sound takes from many influences of music.

The Woodwork recently recorded a five song EP fans can purchase at shows. All the songs on the disc are excellent and the recording is quite good. I am equally impressed with the tracks off their EP as I am with their live performance. Christina’s voice on ‘Burning Bridges’ is very sweet and smooth. All the songs have a thick, rich sound. Taylor says his favorite song on the EP, and to

play at this time, is ‘In The Pines,’ which says is representative of the direction the band is working on moving with their music. He describes the sound as having more folk influences, a lot of harmony, with a little more reverb —a little more spaced out, but with a lot of energy.

Multiple times a month you can catch the band out performing in venues such as South Street, Riptide, the Pub, and 7th Avenue Social. Great local venues, but perhaps their most notable next performance will be when they open for Blues Traveler on November 9 at the Southwest Performing Arts Center. A unanimous dream of the band though is to someday play Red Rocks Amphitheatre in the mountains outside Denver, Colorado. If you’d like to hear a sample of this music, watch a few videos, or check out their schedule of gigs, visit them on ReverbNation.com.

If you should happen to seek out something taking you back to the days when music was smart, yet at the same time catapult you toward a time where music has yet to go, The Woodwork will suit your needs splendidly. •
