Branchaud Brings

‘Synchronicity’ to DAAS Gallery

Last year, artist Danielle Branchaud debuted a surprising new series of work exploring psycho-spiritual themes and archetypes, particularly those coined by Carl Jung, the founder of analytical psychology. The series of paintings, called Psychopomp, will reach its conclusion with ‘Synchronicity,’ an exhibition at DAAS Co-Op Art Gallery & Gifts opening March 11 during SoCo’s regular Second Saturday event.

The exhibition will feature new works, delving not only into new archetypes but the unseen connections among individuals. Synchronicity is defined by the occurrence of events appearing to happen by chance; however not as coincidence but in a meaningful way. Branchaud’s paintings explore this notion, among others, in a style combining vivid colorful expressionism and traditional figurative art.

Danielle Branchaud is a local painter specializing in surrealism and portraiture in acrylics. She has exhibited in Southwest Florida for ten years. This solo exhibition is a follow-up to the

Psychopomp premiere at Howl Gallery in April 2016.

‘Synchronicity’ will feature new acrylic paintings on canvas and an interactive installation that invites the audience to contribute to its message.

SoCo Second Saturday is a regular event held the second Saturday of each month, 5-10pm, at various venues in SoCo, an art district in Fort Myers that runs from Colonial Blvd. down to McGregor Blvd. to Royal Palm Blvd. and over to Summerlin Rd. and back up to Colonial Blvd. and McGregor Blvd.

The opening reception, March 11, 5-10pm, is free and open to the public. The exhibition will be on view, March 11-April 1 at the DAAS Co-Op Gallery, located at 1400 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers. Call 590-8645 for information.

rom March 1-April 30, a group of local artists will display their works at the J.N. ‘Ding’ Darling Wildlife Refuge Visitor & Education Center on Sanibel Island. The Audubon Inspiration exhibit is curated by Cello

Bennett, widow of the late artist Gale Bennett, along with artists Marcy Calkins and Jane Hudson.

Before his death in 2008, Gale Bennett, a local artist with an international reputation, taught for 40 years at art centers throughout the area. He was planning a series of paintings inspired by the works of famed bird artist John James Audubon. “Unfortunately Gale did not live long enough to do this project,” said his wife. “Almost all of the painters preparing the works for the Audubon exhibit were students of his.” Artists with works on display include Marcy Calkins, Pat Dunn, Jane Gezonime, Marilyn Hedlund, Sheila Hoen, Hudson, Teri Mills, Caroline Nuckolls, and Alicia Schmidt.

“The idea was to use Audubon’s masterpieces as a jumping-off point for original new works depicting birds of North America,” adds Bennett. “I am confident Gale would have been thrilled to see his idea carried out by such an accomplished group of artists.”

Audubon Inspirations is on view in the Refuge Visitor & Education Center auditorium every day, 9am-4pm. The ‘Ding’ Darling National Wildlife Refuge is located at 1 Wildlife Dr. on Sanibel. Call 472-1100 for information.

I Hear a Symphony

IMET WITH COMPOSER Dr. Jason Bahr and Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers’ conductor, Jeffrey Faux at Jason’s home. After a few cocktails, we discussed Bahr’s new Symphony No. 2, New Dawn

So, who are the Mastersingers? Jeff explains they consist of members of a community chorus, volunteer singers working with a professional core group of musicians. They specialize in performing major master works, symphonic music, requiems, anything sung with a large orchestra. The group performs two to three major works a year, plus working on smaller projects. With a focus on the Southwest Florida area, you can catch performances mostly in Fort Myers and often at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall.

Bahr and Jeffery met when Jason decided to sign up for the Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers shortly after moving to his current home. He had first heard of the Mastersingers through a music teacher’s meeting at Gulf Coast University, where he is currently a professor. “I always just kind of kept it in my head. After I moved to this house, which was close to the rehearsal site, I thought I would go. They were performing Beethoven’s 9th Symphony my first rehearsal.” He continues, “Jeff is a great conductor. I think he handles the people and the music very well. This is my fourth or fifth year working with the Mastersingers. Iam the bass section leader and I also sing in the chamber choir. Symphony No. 2 will be the fourth work that the Mastersingers have performed of mine.”

Symphony No. 2 began its inception prior to Dr. Bahr moving to Florida. He says he started working on it during his summers, and last year Jeffery Faux encouraged him to complete the work. Dr. Bahr describes Symphony No 2, as a reflection on the Iraq War.

“When President Bush made the decision to take us into war, we weren’t asked to be on a war footing as a country. If you were a soldier or the loved one of a soldier, you had a tangible connection to the Iraq War, but if you weren’t, you were asked to go shopping. You weren’t asked to sacrifice, buy war bonds, give up steel or rubber, contribute more in taxes, or anything. At the same time, thousands of innocent people were suffering. I was angered by the disconnection between what was actually happening and what Americans were experiencing in their everyday lives. I wanted to write a work that reminded people just how terrible war is, and to connect them to war.”

Symphony No. 2 includes poetry from Walt

Whitman and Wilfred Owen. I asked Jason what drew him to use their work. “I’ve been a fan of Whitman’s for a long time; not just his war poetry, but his whole body of work. As Americans, we are very fortunate to have Walt Whitman in our culture; he’s an unbelievable genius and a great communicator across generations, in terms of real basic life experiences. Being familiar with his poetry, I sought out works that would communicate what I wanted in regards to the Iraq War. I threw in the Wildfred Owen poem Dulce et Decorum est, because I couldn’t find in Whitman something as graphic as I wanted. The Owen poem described in great detail a soldier from World War I who was hit with mustard gas and died a horrible death in front of his comrades. Owen’s point is, ‘In war you are encouraged to serve your country. Of course serving your country is good, but it’s not sweet and glorious, it’s awful and wretched, and you suffer a lot.’ I wanted to include that sentiment in my piece.

In the final movement, I wanted there to be some sense of optimism and hope, and Whitman delivers this with his poem called The Mystic Trumpeter. To Walt Whitman purists, this might be offensive, but I kind of chop it up and have taken little bits of it to kind of give it a sense of poem.”

Jeff Faux clearly agrees. “I love the Owen poem. It starts out with the Latin phrase, ‘Dulce et Decorum est,‘ which means ‘How Sweet it is to Die in the Service of Your Country.’ It was a mantra of sorts in World War I, particularly in England, as a kind of rallying cry. This is an honorable thing to do, to die for your country. Owen starts there, with what would be an agreed on patriotic line, then juxtaposes it with the reality of war, very graphic. I’ve been in love with that poem for that reason, for a long time.” He continues, “I’ve just recently gotten the music for that particular movement, and it’s stunning, it paints a picture in a way, musically, that matches. Sometimes in a compositional work the music is better than the poetry, or the poetry is better than the music, and sometimes they both compliment and enrich each other. I think that’s what you’ll hear. It’s powerful.”

Dr. Bahr and Jeff Faux clearly work well together, but even though they compliment each other, there had to be challenges bringing Symphony No. 2 to a live audience. I asked Jason to describe the process. “Writing a forty-plus minute work for orchestra —it’s tough. It takes a very long time. It takes training, knowledge of how the instruments work in the orchestra, how they act individually, and how they work together. I wanted to balance knowing what our choir could do, and in the time we have to rehearse it. We have an amazing soprano, who looked at this really difficult piece and didn’t flinch, which was great, and we’re bringing in a tenor from New York. A lot of our players are from the Naples Philharmonic, top shelf folks who can really read this

music. I’m spoiled. I didn’t have to put too many limitations on my creativity.”

Jeff Faux also had his share of challenges. “As a conductor with a new piece, I didn’t get to pull something off the shelf and get to know it here and there, or get someone else’s take on it, or even read people’s research about it, or anything. It comes at you as it is. You know? So, it’s been a different process for me. Working through it and getting to know it. The plus side of course is, when I have a question I can talk to the composer. I knock on Beethoven’s grave and he has yet to answer (laughs). We collaborate, so that’s exciting.” He adds, “Beyond that is the fact that Jason is in the choir. He’s one of the singers. So, he’s there. We’ll chat every once in a while after rehearsal and bounce ideas off of each other. For me, a composer writes something and there it is, but it’s subject to the interpretation, or inspiration, or experiences of the person who then is responsible for presenting it to an audience. That may not always be the same. I may see things that Jason may not have even thought of. My responsibility is to make Symphony No. 2 something that will appeal to an audience in a live situation, more so than the composer does.”

As a young composer, 20 years ago or more, Dr. Bahr would write a piece and think ‘Well, if they just played it the way I wrote it, it would be what I imagined” (laughing). He gained great experience when he got to hear pieces performed multiple times by different groups or different individuals, bringing a different perspective to the music each time. As a member of the Mastersingers, Dr. Bahr says he has to look at his role as a performer, which is different from approaching it as a composer. “Here, as a member of the choir, of course I know the music, but I am marking my score, occasionally making errors. I have to practice,” adding, “As a composer, I think more holistically. This will work, this fits the choir, this is what room there is for the part, something like that. As a performer, I see things on a much smaller level. How am I going to get my note from here to there? I have to mark that’s a whole step and stuff like that. So far, there isn’t anything that I’ve encountered, at least with this piece, where I performed and I wished I had done something differently, but I certainly have to pay attention to things on a smaller level as a performer.”

Faux explains that for the coming year the Mastersingers have decided to theme their performances around the concept of looking forward in the music world, versus looking backward. “When you talk about a group like ours, that performs master works, we’re performing pieces that have stood the test of time. That’s the definition of a master work. So therefore, by definition, you’re looking back to the past. You are perform-

ing work by Haydn, Beethoven and Mahler, so to then commit to a major project of a living composer? The reality is in today’s world people in our culture like to look back when it comes to classical music, but we think it’s worth looking forward. So we called our whole season ‘The Future of Music.‘

least the future art music consumer.” He continues, “The kids are amazing and Matt Koller, the Choir Director, is very gifted with this age group.” Matt doubles as the Associate Director of the Mastersingers, but spends his time every week working with the youth choir rehearsals. “He’s gotten a great sound out of them, quickly, it’s phenomenal. There are a lot of high school choirs that would love to sound like this. It’s pretty impressive,” says Jeff. Jason continues, “My piece is in five movements. The first four are pretty gruesome. They’re somber and angry, they depict war, but in the fifth movement we turn to something that’s more positive and optimistic about the future. The kids sing that first. “I hear the trumpeter… Give me some vision of the future.” That is the future of music! They’re announcing that future. Hoping for a time when we can get beyond war. I think it is very appropriate.”

So, what are Jeff and Jason hoping the audience comes away with after hearing Symphony No. 2? Jason says he first wants the audience to become more aware of the damage that war causes. “It’s not a statistic, or a two minute news story. There are plenty of disabled veterans that can explain their experiences, but we don’t have stories from the average person who was affected, the farmer or the shop owner who’s store was bombed. I want people to be aware these are real people who were harmed. I want people to then, with that, feel the inspiration to take action. he says. “I also want them to come away, on a much more superficial level, with a meaningful artistic experience. That would be really satisfying for me.”

Symphony No. 2, by Dr. Bahr is part of it, as is The City of Palms Youth Choir, who will also be participating in this performance.

The City of Palms Youth Choir is an auditioned group consisting of middle school and high school age children. Jeff says they were specifically looking for kids that would describe themselves as choir jocks. “You got football jocks, and whatever. We want the choir jocks. The ones that love music so much, they are going to be the future me, and the future Jason, and the future Mastersinger singer, and at the

Jeff adds, “The audience should come away knowing the difference between art and entertainment. Art challenges, moves and inspires. It gets you from point A to point B, whatever that is. As opposed to entertainment, where you can sit comfortably at point A, and be done at point A. Art should have an influence on you. I think this piece is capable of doing that. Its point of view is rich and worth hearing. Jason has already accomplished this in his writing, and with our performance I think that will happen. My hope is the audience walks away realizing a brand new piece of music doesn’t have to be frightening. The message is challenging and weaves itself throughout the piece, there are moments of sheer beauty that are appropriate. If people can be moved in a direction, feel comfortable in that experience, and it was done through a brand new piece of music, I think that would be exciting.” •

Jason Bahr’s Symphony No. 2 will be performed by the Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers, April 2 at the First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs and April 8 at the First Christian Church of Fort Myers. For information, call 288-2535.

Phora and The First Line T

WO INSTALLATIONS BY ANN HAMILTON, Phora and The First Line (Sounds for Drawing) , carried their history forward as they intersected with the 2017 Presidential Inauguration. Each work of art was created years ago in completely different spaces that inspired and informed the final product. Hamilton’s Phora was first conceived in 2005 for La Maison Rouge in Paris, France. Hamilton’s and Deutch’s The First Line(Sounds for Drawing) wasoriginally exhibited in 2011 at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center, Buffalo State College in Buffalo, NY.

lack of verbal communication from the figures in the photos.

The second work in the exhibition The First Line is a collaboration between Ann Hamilton and Andrew Deutsch.

Phora’s current elements include over 120 large-scale photographs hung in a grid over the four walls of the gallery almost from floor to ceiling.

Waltraud Forelli-Wallach, curator of the original Phora exhibition in 2005 remarked, “In my view, her [Hamilton’s] work at La Maison Rouge in particular raises questions about the silence and individualism of the western world, saturated with what has become ineffectual discourse while others struggle to have their say.” Forelli is referencing Hamilton’s sensitivity to the location of the La Maison Rouge located between the Bastille Prison and the Opera Bastille. These sites of the 1789 start of the French revolution and a center of vocal artistic expression intersect with contemporary issues in the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery.

Phora’s current elements include over 120 largescale photographs hung in a grid over the four walls of the gallery almost from floor to ceiling. Each photograph

In this installation there is a single drawing hung on a red freestanding wall above a large drafting table housing a set of headphones with multiple ports to plug into. The red wall is nod to Phora ’s original location, La Maison Rouge. The piece is centered in the middle of the gallery surrounded by and disrupting Phora . Hamilton’s drawing is a layered montage of words encircled by a repetition of oval lines. Deutsch set up a series of microphones to record the sound of Hamilton making the drawing, capturing the graphite rubbing on the paper along with Hamilton’s chanting. The tracks created by Andrew Deutsch are remixed versions of that original recording. Visitors are encouraged one by one to sit at t he table and listen to the tracks while making their own drawings inspired by the sounds of Hamilton making her creation. The box of blank papers slowly diminishing as each visitor deposits their drawing into the archive.

Performative actions are common to Hamilton’s installations and here the audience’s participation closes the circle of the senses and of the public’s ability to have

the viewer removes oneself from the public space accessing a private internal space to create a visual interpretation of Deutsch’s interpretation of Hamilton’s drawing. At the same time the participant becomes a performer within the piece. This becomes another layer of separation created by time and space with the effort to be heard through text, voice and image. These metaphors of separation and struggles to communicate become real through the public’s engagement.

For this exhibition, there was a surprise addition to Hamilton and Deutsch’s work. Beginning at 11am on January 20, 2017, FSW Humanities professor Wendy Chase gave a talk about the exhibition. At approximately 11:40, coinciding with the Presidential Inauguration, a group of twelve FSW students interrupted the presentation to perform a piece inspired by Ann Hamilton. The students stood up one by one, playing backwards recordings of their concerns through their phones. Although the work was not coordinated with Hamilton or Deutsch, it emphasized the timeless and timely themes in their work.

Regardless of any political affiliation, the desire to be heard is shared amongst all people. The convergence of the French Revolution and President Trump’s Inauguration was emphasized by the students’ performance. Ann Hamilton’s and Andrew Deutsch’s works do not aim to comment specifically on that relationship, but the poetic nature of art is

perfect to encompass it. In line with Robert Rauschenberg’s legacy, Hamilton’s and Deutsch’s encouragement of public engagement is as important now as it ever was.

Renowned international artist Ann Hamilton

is a recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, an NEA Visual Arts Fellowship and represented the United States at the 1999 Venice Biennale. She has created sitesensitive installations worldwide, engaging the senses and the mind, incorporating diverse cultures, materials, architecture, and language. It is the largest toxin-free grove in the United States. She has almost 400 trees and produces about 10,000 pounds of fruit a year.

Crazy About Calamondins A

GUTSTEIN,owner of the virtual Calamondin Cafe for a unique gift idea for a food snob and her prompt answer will be, “Anything calamondin”. Then she’ll elaborate. “If they’re a cook give them fresh fruit, puree or coulis; if they like sweets they’ll appreciate a calamondin cake; if they like marmalade they’ll love calamondin jam; or you can just give them a calamondin tree.”

The Calamondin Cafe is a virtual cafe, Gutstein explains. “We are a ‘dirt-to-dessert’ artisanal company where everything is done the old fashion way — manually. We hand plant the trees, hand pick the fruit and separate the stem and the seeds by hand.

Gutstein gives her father credit for her successful business. “About 25 years ago my father’s friend Jack Spencer introduced him to the fruit by giving him a jar of homemade calamondin jam. Dad loved it and decided to make his own. The local grocery didn’t carry the fruit so he planted a tree in his yard. Although it’s an ornamental tree with striking foliage used often in landscaping, his mission was to harvest the fruit to make jam. And he did. I lived in Maryland at the time. He sent me several jars from that first batch and I was hooked. From then on, every winter, the jam arrived at my home like clockwork.”

Her father continued to make the jam until 2008 when, during the cooking process, he burnt the sugar. “Mom said it was time for me to carry on the tradition because she was forcing Dad into calamondin retirement.”

Gutstein enjoyed making the jam and, like her father, gave jars to all of her friends. They said it was so good she should start selling it. “But I just kept making it and giving it away, until I tasted a cake Jack’s wife, Joy baked. That was my aha moment. I instantly visualized a little company that could.”

She began by researching possible competition but soon discovered there wasn’t any. “At that point it was a no brainer,” she said. “I wanted to share the calamondin experience with the rest of the world. I felt it was time. And, if it worked out like I planned, my pension would be in place.”

She worried about a pension because she is a physician by trade, therefore responsible for creating her own retirement. In an effort to secure her future, 15 years ago she her brother David, also a doctor, purchased 27 1 / 2 acres of land on Pine Island and in Lehigh Acres. They used 25 of the acres to grow and sell palm trees. It was a viable business until 2008 when the real estate market collapsed. The palm tree venture fell flat as part of the domino effect that ensued.

So, the obvious thing to do with the two and a half acres not being used was to plant calamondin trees. In 2011, when the trees were ready to harvest, the Calamondin Cafe was born. Currently she has almost 400 trees and produces about 10,000 pounds of fruit with only nine part time employees. It is the largest toxin free grove in the United States.

“I don’t consider this a start up company, I consider it an industry,” Gutstein says. “It was and still is the only calamondin company in the world that sells consumable products made from this fruit.”

The calamondin is a small fruit, about the size of a walnut. Fully ripened it is sour but mellows when processed. Gutstein says It tastes like a tart tangerine with overlying flavors of orange, lemon, apricot, pineapple and guava. The skin adds sweetness and antioxidants so it’s used in the processing of the puree adding healthy benefits to the consumers. Like an orange, it is high in vitamin C.

It originated in Asia and is an intergenetic hybrid between a member of the genus citrus (probably the mandarin orange) and the kumquat. It found its way to Florida over 100 years ago via Panama. In the Philippines, where it is extremely popular, it’s picked green (unripe) and used mostly to season foods. In the United States the fruit stays on the tree until fully ripe and turns orange.

The tree is sensitive to the cold, therefore thrives in warm states such as Florida, California, Hawaii, and parts of southern Texas. The tree takes two to three years to bear fruit and may live for more than 40 years. It’s an attractive tree that sprouts white or purplish flowers and grows between nine and 19 feet.

The fruit has many health benefits. As a doctor, Gutstein feels that it’s important to create awareness of

toxins used in growing, cleaning and even shipping citrus fruits. She also considers it important to inform the public of the advantages of consuming products grown with organic pesticides and produced in a toxin free environment.

In an added effort to keep their products organic they tout totally toxin-free kitchen practices. “We use stainless steel instead of aluminum due to the potential link between dietary aluminum consumption and increased risk for alzheimer’s. We use BPA-free plastic or glass because BPA has been implicated as a link to breast and prostate cancer as well as behavioral disorders in children. Our ingredient list is short but includes only quality products and we go so far as to make sure even our packaging is BPA free.”

Gutstein isn’t influenced by profit when it comes to toxins. “We decided not to ship out of the country because USDA rules said we would have to dip the fruit in one of three fungicides that we consider toxic. After going through all the hoops to keep our product as pure as possible we couldn’t allow that to happen so we settled on shipping only within the United States for the time being.”

The production of all the calamondin products take place in a dedicated room inside Cameron’s British Foods. The gluten-free cakes are made in a gluten-free kitchen at Lisa’s Gluten-Free Bakery in Naples.

Calamondin Cafe sells puree, extract and juices from the fruit. They also sell cakes, jams,

candied peel, sea salt, coulis, and trees. “When customers ask for seeds, we tell them they are attractively packaged in the fruit.“

While palm trees sales are up again, Gutstein’s long term plan is to eventually replace them with calamondin trees. “But for now. the division of the two species of trees is fine. It serves the need of our current customer base.”

Gutstein is looking forward to a bright and lucrative future. “We are working on or improving several ideas. We have a wedding cake package in place and are getting ready to market itto bakeries. We accidentally discovered that, because of its intense flavor, chemo patients will eat calamondin baked goods when nothing else appeals to them, so we developed and plan to expand upon a chemo package dubbed the Cheer Up Program. And there are several breweries experimenting with calamondins aspiring to develop a great tasting beer.”

“We use stainless steel instead of aluminum due to the potential link between dietary aluminum consumption and increased risk for alzheimer’s. We use BPA-free plastic or glass because BPA has been implicated as a link to breast and prostate cancer as well as behavioral disorders in children.”

But Gutstein doesn’t want to spread the company too thin. “We have no desire to be a venture capitalist. I’ve seen many organizations grow like gang busters only to disappear in a year or two. That being said, if we are lucky enough to acquire a huge account or a brewery finds the perfect recipe for a calamondin beverage, everything is in place to enable the company to expand as needed.”

Whatever happens Gutstein is confident that she will still be in business five years from now. “We could still be local or may grow into a national or even international company? Only time will tell. But whatever we are we will still have a presence and that’s what’s important. I planted a grove not a tree. I made a commitment.”

Gutstein shared a few Calamondin serving suggestions; Add a teaspoon per serving to fruit salad or to oatmeal, mix 50/50 with Horseradish sauce for a shrimp dip, bake over the top of chicken, fish, or pork, use inside or out on baked brie, mix into whipped creme with a touch of powdered sugar, add to waffles, pancakes, scones, or mix it into Greek yogurt. It also works beautifully with chocolate mousse, flourless chocolate cake or poured over ice cream and pound cake.

In addition to their on-line store at calamondincafe.com, Gutstein sells products locally. “We are at the farmers market in Naples (3rd Street) on Friday, Sanibel on Sundays, and Lakes Park in Fort Myers on Wednesdays.” •

SHANGRI-LA.You may be familiar with the fictional paradise first described in the 1933 novel, Lost Horizon by James Hilton. Those who lived there enjoyed a carefree, harmonious existence and virtual immortality. Nestled on 8.5 acres

between Tamiami Trail and Old 41 (thanks to a recently completed makeover, now known as Historic Old 41), Shangri-La Springs Resort in Bonita Springs has been busy living up to the name, quietly implementing a major restoration of its buildings and grounds over the past number of years. Upgrades are nearing completion and the schedule of events, classes and goings-on is staggering. From yoga, art and dance to healing arts and spa services, there’s something for everyone in search of rejuvenation. It’s also becoming quite the popular setting for weddings and private events. As General Manager and Artistic Director Zawi Borsa puts it, “It’s about bringing everybody together and allowing this property to give back to the community in general.”

From the street, the sign beckons. Turning into the property you instantly begin to catch the vibe. The majestic Great House greets guests out front. Built in 1921 by the Heitman family, the Great House was originally a 25-room hotel designed to house potential buyers of nearby property that they were

In the living room of the Great House is where you’ll find a white grand piano. Several nights a week it’s being played by a local performer, with accompanying musicians joining in on percussion or perhaps electric double bass. Artwork is everywhere, evoking a sense of comfort and home. Zawi shares that following renovations, the Great House will once again be a hotel for guests of special events taking place at the resort.

Wander through, check out the Paper Grotto (which, according to Zawi, the setting is all paper) and out onto the patio, which offers outdoor seating for lunch and dinner. From here you’ll enjoy a view of the courtyard, the centerpiece of which is one of the two magnificent Mysore fig trees (imported from India) located on property. “We have had since the very beginning a focus on art and nature,” says Zawi.

The Long House sits across the courtyard from the Great House. On the Art/Nature night that we attended, the Long House was hosting live dulcimer music by Debo Kumi. There was an art table for kids to make

Zawi recalls, “The original mineral spring dates back to the Calusa Indians. They gathered their water there and used it for ceremonial purposes. It flows out into Oak Creek, which meanders thru our property. It’s been the centerpiece for many owners.” Current chlorination codes prevent use of the pool at the moment, but the pool deck setting evokes a time long past. Zawi assures us that they are trying to resolve that pesky chlorination thing so guests may enjoy the pool.

Further down the property we visited the Hummingbird House, home to Hummingbird Wellbeing Center & Boutique, an independent company operating at Shangri-La Springs. Restoration efforts have brought the floors back to their original wooden shine, and it’s here that a plethora of classes are held including yoga, healing, meditation, dance, chakra balancing and much more. Visit the Shangri-La website for a complete schedule of events and classes.

The Octagon House is just off the courtyard, housing an array of live music and more within its unique shape. Nearby sits Shangri-La’s other Mysore fig tree. Shangri-La President Andrew Sroka remarked during our visit that when the fig trees are blooming the crows descend en masse, making a glorious racket as they consume their feast. As the trees produce more fruit in upcoming seasons, Zawi says, they’re hoping to nab some figs for people to enjoy and have nearby Momentum Brew House make an organic fig beer to be served at Shangri-La. If it’s here, it has to be organic. It all goes back to the very essence of life. Andrew adds, “This is the largest private green space in Bonita Springs. Everything we do here is designed to be sustainable.”

“The organic garden is the base of the entire project, the core of it all”, says Zawi, referencing the fact that from roughly the 1950’s on, Shangri-La Springs has had a focus on health and making its mark as a first-class health resort, even when things like fasting, juicing and a raw food diet were virtually unknown back then.

developing. It was expanded to 50 rooms by a subsequent owner, Walter Mack of the Cadillac family. Proprietors that have followed, right up to the present, have been more interested in developing Shangri-La Springs as a health resort. Among the Great House offerings, says Zawi, are live painting, lunch and dinner service, a bar, and gift shop. There’s also live music.

laminated butterfly cards, potter Matt Kearney was creating pieces on a pottery wheel, an artist was painting on canvas to music of his own, and a section of floor had chalkboard pieces laid out with a chalk art project in creation.

During our visit we marveled at the garden, overseen by the self-proclaimed “Unruly Gardener” Millisa Bell. Healthy, thriving vegetables, herbs and greens stretched for hundreds of yards. orchard filled with local and exotic fruit boasts four varieties of bananas, starfruit and an assortment of citrus. In true sustainability fashion, there is also a beebox in the starter phases of producing honey, as well as a building containing several giant worm composting bins. Many flowering plants exist here too which according to Bell, are excellent for beneficial pollinators.

All of this carefully grown, organic yield provides the substance for the Shangri-La kitchen overseen by Chef Pyro Rodriguez. His menu is updated seasonally, offering lunch and dinner ‘farm to table’ fare. He loves being able to just go into the garden and get what he needs to create dishes, listing foods like bronze fennel, Mexican tarragon, passion fruit, guava and dragon fruit as examples. Shangri-La partners with local vendors to bring in organic meat and fish to complement the vegetarian fare.

Fully encompassing their mission of total health, they offer a Dinner Theatre series bringing together art and music along with a delicious organic dinner to round out your evening. Dinner is served in the Art Gallery Dining Room followed by a concert in the Octagon. Scheduled for March 11 is a visit from Lancaster, PA’s Franklin & Marshall College Chamber Singers. “The restaurant itself is a unique experience for two reasons”, says Zawi, “We have art hanging on the walls. And there is a wall of windows facing the courtyard and the Mysore fig tree.”

When you’re situated on a mineral spring it just seems a given that a focus on health and wellbeing was destined to happen. Following Shangri-La’s incarnation as a hotel, a subsequent owner, Dr. Charles Gnau, capitalized on the health aspect by adding a spring-fed pool and a statue dubbed, ‘the

Indian Maiden of the Springs.’ In 1964, the property was purchased by R.J. Cheatham, whose interest in natural hygiene led to improving the property with recreation and health spa facilities. It was at this point the locale was redubbed Shangri-La.

The 1993 purchase by Leo Dahlman brought a sizable restoration with the end goal of developing it into a first-class health resort. His background in historic restoration and hotel management helped to reinstate most of the property to its original magnificence. A pair of longtime conservationists bought the resort in 1998 through the Lama Hana Land Trust to protect its place as a landmark in Bonita Springs. Then things got quiet on Old 41 for a few years, then a good decade or so, and the property went into foreclosure. However, it was not all for naught. In late 2015, major renovations to Old 41 began; all the while upgrades to all things Shangri-La continued to roll forward.

During this quiet time, Zawi says, “We were maintaining and preserving the land. The grounds became certified organic and the gardens were kept active the entire time. The trust came in and saved it from being developed. That was the goal and a success. As time went by they looked at different options for what it could be for the community, and finally in 2012 the public revealed their awe and interest in the property, which led to a push for getting the doors open one day a week,” adding that it took about a year to convince those in charge to let the public in even for that short time. Then Zawi came on board in 2013 as Artistic Director. “The current owners saved it,” she states, “They wanted to preserve it, protect it from being plowed down. The community’s

been supportive and they tell us what they love and what they’d like to see, and we try to make it happen.”

She continues, “There were three of us that opened it one day a week. We charged $10 to come in and walk around. It grew to where [Facilities Manager] John Domanski took a passion in giving historical tours. He did all the research and developed a tour that we now offer. Andrew gives the tours now.

Soon after they started, people came in saying it would be a beautiful place to do yoga, dance classes, etc. Then lunch started. At the time, we didn’t have a working kitchen. It was all catered in. People wanted to stay and enjoy the grounds. We wanted and continue to be reflective of what the community wants.” And if the community wants yoga, they’ll find lots of it at ShangriLa Springs.

“We have a nice variety of yoga, restorative yoga, free yoga for veterans and service members, etc,” Zawi says, adding, “We have a full-service sauna and a really interesting slow spa.”

Outside of special programs and events, admission to enjoy the atmosphere of ShangriLa is free. And that just lines up perfectly with the Shangri-La vision. Zawi sums it up, “When you get in art and nature you start to realize what life’s all about. It’s a good escape. It’s a great place to come and just get away from it,' adding, “Everybody who walks in here says ‘I’ve been driving by here for 15 years and I had no idea.’ When they walk onto the grounds, it doesn’t matter their background, everyone says they can feel something special. We’re so lucky that it’s still here.”

hen one thinks about the Steampunk phenomenon, a collage of Victorian era images enter the mind: glimmery brass clocks, antique keys, Edison or Marconi bulbs, tight striped corsets, leather-laced top hats, round protruding goggles, and steam machines. In addition, novels like Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, H.G. Wells’ Time Machine, and contemporary young adult literature, like Scott Westerfeld’s Leviathan, are all examples of the science fiction subgenre referred to as Steampunk.

Attributed to the author K.W. Jeter, the term “Steampunk” began as a literary reference to describe Victorian era fiction that was future-oriented. The term was later used however, to describe things other than literature such as fashion, movies, television, and décor. Steve Timcack, an artist, and owner of Another Time and Timeless galleries in downtown Fort Myers, which features Steampunk art, jewelry and décor,

describes Steampunk as “a Victorian era view of the future using steam powered machines.” He says, “Think James Bond in the Victorian era.”

Timcak has been studying invention since he was a kid, always taking things apart — like old rotary phones. He positions the dial in one place and the receiver in another; eventually creating a jewelry box telephone, which of course worked. He became fascinated by brass keys, lightbulbs, antique clocks, and other antiquities that make interesting art mediums.

When he was a teenager in the mid-70s growing up in Chicago, his dad was the superintendent of the old Fine Arts building on Michigan Avenue. The basement was a “treasure trove” of junk. Bronze work was everywhere. The building used to be a factory for Studebaker coaches but it was expanded and redesigned for artists.

As a teen he snuck around the basement and went through big boxes of keys to see which key opened what. Some doors had never cracked an inch in over 50 years. The basement had a boiler room that looked like “two big locomotives underground.” Trains are the driving force for the Steampunk culture, and Timcak was impressed, not only by the boiler room of the Fine Arts building, but by the old train yards in Louisiana, which are filled with unlocked train

You can walk in, look around and touch objects reflective of another time and another era. “Basically, I grew up in Steampunk, so it comes very naturally for me.”

Timcak creates art pieces that he sells in his galleries. His work has a distinctive ambience. He designs from his mind, and doesn’t mimic the creations of others. His work is a true inventor’s design, meaning one sees all the mechanisms working behind the glass of his lamps or clock pieces. He uses Edison or Marconi-style bulbs, tubes from defunct MRI machines, old vintage lamp ports and scrap metal, including copper wire

or brass. It takes him more time to amass the components from yard sales, thrift stores, and antique shops than it does to build a lamp. In ‘Two Worlds’ one can see the artistic and electric interchanges between the components beautifully in this lamp creation. Timcak’s ‘From the Depths of Time’ also features nautical

themes in this lighted piece. He creates patina fin ishes on metals to age

them but uses modern sockets to juxtapose the images of time. Sometimes he also polishes metals — whatever fits the vision he has for the piece. This particular piece features two turn knobs with a miniature diver’s helmet and two reproduction Victorian brass stampings. Many of his pieces feature nautical symbols that are inspired by the Jules Verne classic, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. One of the most puzzling of all the symbols is the octopus (oddly enough it is not the squid that is highlighted in the 20,000 Leagues novel). This symbol has a dominate appearance in the Steampunk world, but according to Timcak, its origins are ambiguous.

Not all Steampunk is about glimmer and sass, as it does have philosophical themes that weave in and out of literature and the arts. For example, Timcak’s piece ‘The Belfry III’ incorporates a taxidermic bat incased in the dismantled body of an oak clock. The bat is hanging upside down from an attachment in front of an antique gong. When the clock chimes, the gong makes it louder. I asked him why the name for the piece and he said it’s based on the old saying, ‘You got bats in your belfry,’ meaning ‘you’re nuts.’

Is there a dark side in the Steampunk phenomena? In the novel, Time Machine, HG Wells wanted us to know that there is an element of danger in pushing too much towards the future. “We are always getting away from the present moment...” In the race to invent the next thing a “Wild Wild West” for innovators had been created. And because of the eagerness to race into the

future, there were many lawsuits, explosions, bankruptcies, and failures, as innovators were not taking the time to be careful and deliberate.

Steampunk had a limit to steampowered machines, but the inventors of today may face equally similar issues that H.G. Wells alluded to over a century ago, but in different areas of science, such as in nuclear technology and biotechnology. There doesn’t seem to be much glimmer in cloning sheep, so maybe the fascination with Steampunk brings us to an era of excitement that although might have caused more than a few explosions, it just looks more glamorous.

Another Time

Luckily for the artist, we can explore the juxtapositions of time through the various mediums that can be found in basements, antique stores, and train yards. These discovers are turned into repurposed pieces that reflect an era of long ago. Yet, the worlds can collide, as artists like to do, so Timcak works on bridging the modern world to Steampunk with his newest creation that takes a computer flash drive and gives it that Steampunk touch by fitting it into an antique key. You can see and purchase Timcak’s pieces at Another Time and Timeless galleries located in Downtown Fort Myers. •
