Conservancy Reopens

Conservancy of Southwest Florida unveils its newly renovated Nature Center during a two-day Grand Reopening Weekend Festival, April 20 & 21. The new Conservancy of Southwest Florida Nature Center is designed to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the water, land, and wildlife in the region.

The Grand Reopening celebration will allow people to experience the new Nature Center and enjoy other ecofriendly activities and events. Weekend festivities include special exhibits and educational programs and speakers, including renowned oceanographer and keynote speaker, Dr. Sylvia Earle from National Geographic, as well as music, entertainment, films, live aninal presentations, arts & crafts, games, puppet show, book signings, special activities for children, and guided eco-cruises.

The first 50 attendees each day receive a free Grand Reopening Weekend Festival commemorative t-shirt.

The Conservancy is a not-forprofit grassroots organization focused on the critical environmental issues of the Southwest Florida region with a mission to protect the region’s water, land and wildlife through environmental education, science, policy, and wildlife rehabilitation. The von Arx Wildlife Hospital treats more than 3,200 injured, sick and orphaned animals each year and releases about half of them back into their native habitats.

MarcusJansen’s Big March

Unit A, Marcus Jansen's open studio headquarters, will celebrate its one year anniversary on April 5, during downtown Fort Myers’ Art Walk, with a reception and anniversary party that will include a DJ and a special guest artist appearance.

Unit A opened in March 2012, after internationally renown artist and Fort Myers resident Marcus Jansen decided to transform his studio building from a forgotten church into the largest private art space of it's kind in Southwest Florida. Its the first space to open in what some are calling the emerging ‘Warehouse Art District’ in downtown Fort Myers. Leaders of the local art community have already held meetings about possible artists’ lofts and non-profit warehouse space for arts organizations having a place in that region using Unit A as a catalyst to do so.

"The space is here because our members believed in the mission and committed to the cause and stick to it, says Jansen. “With the anniversary we celebrate our members behind the scene that don't make headline news.

just refer to it's location, but also represents our small unit of individuals that believe in our mission," he continues.

Members working behind the scene include Chrisitine Gruber, Tonda Soisson Lawson & Nick Soisson, Lelia & Ray Soission as well as Amanda Plummer, Bob Encarnacion, Michi's Arts & Craft, and Laszlo Hagymasi, from Budapest, Hungary, who has worked with Jansen for almost fifteen years and will be part of the Unit's continuing operations.

Unit A will also introduce its new members at the anniversary party: Lia Martino, who worked closely with Giorgio Armani, is now Jansen's Artist Liaison; and artist Jonas Stirner, who assisted Robert Rauschenberg for many years.

“Lia brings an extensive

amount of experience and information from fashion and arts with her and is very passionate about the Unit’s mission," said Jansen.

From digital imaging to fabrication, Stirner has knowledge of all phases of fine art production. He will be collaborating with Jansen on projects and events. "Although we typically do not represent artists at Unit A, Jonas will also be showing his sculptures at the opening anniversary celebration as a special guest,” explains Jansen. “We are very excited to have his involvement and his artwork is a great asset to our team."

Since its opening a year ago, Unit A has hosted several big events, including Sonic Combine, Urban Decaydence, and Jansen's Absolut Vodka signing.

Unit A works with the Alliance for the Arts, Florida Gulf Coast University, Hodges University and others, offering educational tours and artist talks.

Jansen also has a busy year ahead with exhibitions in Rome, Venice, Milan, Munich, and London. Lia Martino says, "We are looking forward to an exciting year and look forward to working closely with our gallery partners here and abroad." One of Marcus's longtime partners has been HW Gallery in Naples.

The Unit A anniversary party on April 5 is 6-10pm and is limited to 140 guests at a time. The gallery, located at 1922 Evans Ave. in Fort Myers, is open by appointment only and the first Friday of every month, 6-10pm. For more information, call 338-8449.

Jansen on Sanibel

Marcus Jansen’s paintings will be featured in a solo exhibt at BIG Arts on Sanibel, March 4-30.

Jansen will host a BIGArts’ ARTSalon lecture, titled ‘Expressionism Today: Urban, Socio-Political Paintings,’ on March 15 at 4pm. There will be a free reception following the lecture, 5:30-7pm.

Jansen on Campus

Jansen will also be one of th e artists with work in the exhibi, ‘Eye of the Storm,; at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery on the campus of Edison State College March 1-April 13. The opening reception is March 1, 6-8pm, with a gallery talk with Guest Curator, D. Dominick Lombardi: at 7pm. The reception and gallery talk is free.

Film Festival on the Beach

The seventh annual Fort Myers Beach Film Festival returns to the island April 25-28, with screenings all day over the fourday festival at Beach Theater, a twilight sceenning on the beach, a filmmaking workshop for adults and another for children to create family films, a film industry luncheon, and a sunset cruise with filmmakers and celebrity guests.

The Film Festival begins Wednesday, April 24, with a ‘Welcome Filmmakers’ Sunset Party Cruise aboard the Indian Princess Paddle Boat.

The Festival officially opens Thursday, April 25, with Ribbon Cutting at Beach Theater.

On Friday, April 26th, there will be a Twilight Film on the Beach behind the Holiday Inn.

Independent Film Industry workshops will be given on Saturday, April 27.

The Festival closes on Sunday, April 28, with an Awards Ceremony and Audience Award film screening.

This year’s event includes a Spanish fort and garrison, complete with mounted conquistadors, cannons, a missionary, displays and a Spanish colonial cooking demonstration.

The Reading Festival, in the Harborside Event Center and Centennial Park, features author presentations and book signings, programs and activities for teens and children, the latest library technology, contests, booksellers, and a free book for every child and teen. New this year is the Reading Rocks! Teen Battle of the Bands!, where three finalists perform at 12:30, 1:45 and 3:15pm. The Festival, which draws about 18,000 people, kicks-off Friday evening, March 15, 69pm, with Evening with the Authors, where attendees can meet authors such as Catherine Coulter, Alex Berenson and Martin Dugard; teen authors

Sanibel Hosts Classical Music Festival

The Sanibel Music Festival, an island tradition for 27 years, opens March 2 with Trio Cavatina, one of three ensembles new to the Festival. Others performing for the first time at the Festival are the Arabesque Winds with Cherry Tsang on piano and the Ariel Quartet. In addition, four returning favorites include the Gould Trio with Robert Plane on clarinet, David Finckel with Wu Han and Philip Setzer, Pacifica Quartet with Wu Han on piano, and the Opera Theater of Connecticut.

All concerts will be performed Tuesday and Saturdays at 8pm at the Sanibel Congregational Church on Sanibel.

Cuban Coffee Paintings at Collier Museum

As part of its year-long Viva Florida 500 celebration, Collier County Museums hosts ‘The Spirit of the Coffee Bean,’ Cuban Espresso Coffee paintings by Reynier Llanes, March 1-April 25 at the Naples Depot Museum in

downtown Naples. An opening reception for the artist will be held March 1, 6-8pm.

Unable to obtain the necessary paints and art supplies in his native Cuba, Llanes mastered the art of using coladito, or espresso coffee, as

an essential and aromatic ingredient to create his art. His painting process is similar to watercolor. He prepares his palette by roasting different kinds of Cuban coffee. The various shades of brown depend on the color of the bean and how much water is used to brew the pot. With these, Llanes composes his nostalgic scenes of family and rural life in Cuba to celebrate the island’s long cultural connection with Southwest Florida.

BluesFestivalin Bonita Springs

The seventh annual Bonita Blues Festival, a two-day concert event, will again be held on March 8 & 9 at Riverside Park in downtown Bonita Springs.

Gates open at 1:30pm and music starts at 2pm on Friday, March 8. Gates open at 11am and music starts at 11:30pm on Saturday, March 9. Both days will feature award-winning blues artists from around the country as well as local favorites.

Legendary bluesman Jimmy Thackery headlines the Friday concert. Also performing will be Southern Hospitality, featuring JP Soars, Damon Fowler and Victor Wainwright, as well as The Reba Russell Band and local favorites Big Buck & the Biscuit Boys and The Certified Band.

Y, HOW TIMES ARE CHANGING I remember in the late 90s attempting to find something to do on a Saturday night downtown seemed more like work than the weekend. To visit the area much after dark meant taking my chances crossing dark side streets filled with questionable characters, some funny and some not quite. During the day it wasn’t much better. Downtown area businesses appeared weathered and out of date. In fact, the streetscapes could easily give one the distinct impression the city was suffering a sharp decline – one hurricane, or economic turndown away from disappearing into oblivion. But all that has changed.

Fort Myers Mayor Randy Henderson has made it his personal mission to continue the efforts of his predecessor, former Mayor Humphrey, in cleaning up, renovating, and shaping the new look and feel of what downtown offers its residents and visitors.

“We knew we had to modernize the city, make it a pleasant place to be, make it a safe place to be. We’ve had issues in the past, but we’ve gotten rid of that by transitioning away from a predominantly drinking district, if you will. We had an extensive debate on what to do when the city was dealing with ways to instill stability and comfort from criminal activity. We created a law. If you’re only a drink-

ing establishment, that’s what you exist for, it’s going to be unlawful for anyone under 21 to be in your establishment. I would tell you that I had to take great consternation supporting the law in the beginning, because I’m a person who’s for more freedom, not more restriction, but at the end of analysis and debate it was more logical than it was about freedom. It aligned our city’s interest with the interest of what federal and state government laws were. We were criticized by some, but most supported the law including a lot of bars and restaurants. They didn’t want the liability associated with underage drinking, and I want to tell you, looking back, it has been a great decision for the city.”

Altering the drinking laws in downtown was just the beginning. Mayor Henderson explains, “We wanted to create a general good feeling that said to the business world I want to be there, set up my shop there, because I can make a great living if I do.”

By 2002-2003, Fort Myers began interviewing world renowned urban planner Andres Duany. Duany’s plan ultimately provided the city with a vision intended to inspire the arrival of new business by supporting and propping up existing business. “Rather than Duany presenting us a plan saying, ‘Do this and only this over the next ten years and if you

change it you’re screwing it up,” it was instead, “Here’s an outline, here’s a template. Now just mold it and tweak it in these various ways.’ Andres Duany provided the flexibility within his plan, but what he didn’t say was that’s not going to be easy.”

The existing community understood giving downtown a face-lift was going to be painful and time consuming, but many approached it from the perspective that before things could get better the city had to go through it. As the old saying goes, ‘no pain no gain’ On the other hand, there was the typical grinding and gnashing of teeth from some.

“It was necessary to rip up many of the streets,’ the Mayor explains. “Everything was planked off down there. You’d have to walk around construction in order to get to your favorite restaurant. It is some of the most difficult work you will ever seek to do when imagining the public’s interest. There are so many ways people think it should be done so first you try to seek a consensus. We did that by having so many public hearings. I believe we have collectively gotten the vision way more right than wrong. The efforts were well worth it. Downtown is thriving, businesses are moving in at an astonishing rate along with new residents, and our arts and entertainment community has truly begun to flourish as a result.”

He continues, “Another part of our vision included creating opportunity for entertainment that appealed to a broad range of people. We wanted people to be able to have a nice dinner, walk around, experience the culture, art, a play, and more.

“I’d like to see a cinema and bandshell eventually built. It is one of the goals over the next term to reach out to wealthier people from the community and try to inspire the financial resources so we can have a symphony presence downtown. We are ready for it. We’ve got a venue down on the river where one day I envision symphony performances throughout the year and jazz festivals. I think it would show the real sophistication of the city.”

“Ginny (my wife) and I have intense schedules. We can’t do all the things we want, but currently we love attending the Sydney & Berne Davis Arts Center events. If nothing else, I like to show up as Mayor to be supportive of the efforts that are going on,” he says. “I do everything in my power to try to do that as often as possible. The art, music and theatre events drive a lot of the interest in our community and influence the economy in very positive ways. I remember my predecessor, Mayor Humphrey, once went to a US Mayor’s convention and I remember him coming back and reporting to the council, ‘We’ve got to get this city heading in a direction that provides an opportunity to grow its arts and cultural community.’ We began to do

that and it’s made a great impact. Tourism is strong. The Edison-Ford Estates is doing better than it’s ever done. The Southwest Florida Historical Museum, the Imaginarium Science Center, the Burrows Home, and Langford Kingston House, are all showing record attendances and usage.”

So what else does Mayor Henderson predict for the future? “I believe we will see multiple modern hotels and restaurants coming to take advantage of the building blocks we have created for them,’ he says. “Beyond that, other businesses and financial services will show up because there will be more demand for those services.”

“A lot of residential area will continue to grow here and inland from the river, stimulating more opportunity for younger folks to buy in at affordable rates with nice accommodations. Right now not everybody can afford to be right on the river. I believe all that will be possible in the coming 36 months to ten year horizon.”

The Mayor continues, “Another one of the challenges in balancing the diverse interests of our citizens included a substantial public debate about appropriate heights of new buildings. Merging the high buildings in with the historical low buildings was really challenging. I think we found a reasonable balance, but it was stressful trying to figure that out. Somewhere you have to find the threshold that offers a feasible opportunity, but yet maintains the charm and character of the city. So we don’t have a perfect plan, but I think we’ve got it way more right than we’ve got it wrong. And I’m comfortable with that.”

Considering his experiences in governmment the Mayor recalls, “I was guarded when I first came into office 12 years ago (as city councilman). I wanted to participate in a process that inspired a plan, but wouldn’t set the plan on a shelf and say ‘we better wait.’ Thankfully, to my colleague’s credit, we planned the work and we began immediately to work the plan. Working together in a transparent, respectful way, inspiring and achieving a result which changes a city forever for the better – it gives you a feeling of accomplishment. I tell people all the time, ‘the best is yet to come.’

Since the last census, Fort Myers’ population shrank from 67,000 to 63,000 post recession. It seemed that there was an exodus from the city, but today at nearly 68,000, Fort Myers continues to prove it will weather this storm and others to come. The economy is recovering, our population growing and there is a good amount of choice when it comes to what to do on a Saturday night in the city.

“The word is getting out across Florida and beyond that Fort Myers is a beautiful city and a fun place to be,” says Mayor Henderson. If you haven’t visited downtown in a while, perhaps you should. •

DAMON FOWLER, JP SOARS AND VICTOR WAINWRIGHT

have all grown up in Florida and have been playing blues clubs and festivals throughout the state and country for years and have been good friends for a long time. So when Damon had the idea of joining forces with JP and Victor to form a blues ‘supergroup’ they jumped at the chance. The band was named Southern Hospitality.

They went into the studio with Grammy-nominated cajun bluesman Tab Benoit (and bassist Chuck Riley and drummer Chris Peet) and recorded a strong new album, ‘Easy Livin’, recently released on Blind Pig Records, one of the premier blues labels in the world. Each contributes several songs showcasing their distinct styles –Damon’s southern soul reminiscent of Muscle Shoals and Little Feat, JP’s driving Texan and Delta blues, and Victor’s funky, rockin’ boogie-woogie from New Orleans and Memphis. There’s even a reggae tune and a cover of Willie Bobo’s ‘Fried Neck Bones and Home Fries,’ popularized by Santana.

Damon, JP and Victor play regularly in Southwest Florida, most often at Buckingham Blues Bar, and will be playing March 9 at the Bonita Blues Festival.

I emailed some questions to the band, who were in different locations gigging around the country.

VICTOR

How did the band Southern Hospitality form? Whose Idea was it and how did it evolve?

Damon, along with a phone call to JP, started this project. I was thankfully asked to join later by them and asked what I thought of the concept. It started as a ‘showcase’ idea – and it's turned into a real band, but a band that performs every night as a concert, as a show. Just as if it were a showcase.

What is the difference between playing live and playing in a recording studio?

For Southern Hospitality, there wasn't much difference between playing live and playing in the studio. We came in, and along with our producer Tab Benoit, decided that our best option was really just to recreate what we do live, and capture that moment in time. We're all close friends, so capturing that musical conversation was really important to us. In other words, we wanted to play for our own pleasure, and get on tape that living part of the song.–the most important part.

There was something about watching Tab work that put it all into perspective. There are producers who holler, jump all over the place and rearrange everything, and play all the instruments and do all that stuff. That really isn’t production in my mind. When it’s really happening, I don't think you should even be able to see it. What Tab does affects everyone in the room, but without really anyone noticing. He has a big presence. The more I think about it, Tab can walk into the room and change everything without saying a word.

In the words of Jim Dickinson, a hero of mine, "Our fears of extinction compel us to record – to re-create –the ritual ceremony. From the first hand-print cave

painting to the most modern computer art, it is the human condition to seek immortality. Life is fleeting. Art is long. A record is a ‘totem,’ a document of a unique, unrepeatable event worthy of preservation and able to sustain historic life.

What do you enjoy most about playing at Blues Festivals?

Blues music festivals, or any music festival we play, can be a very unique and exciting way to experience live music. One of the best things about these events is that they know no age barriers. Very often artists in our field tend to find themselves playing to an older audience, the minimum age being 21, and often the vast majority of those in a theater or large venue are well over that. At festivals this is different, both on and off the stage. Families come out together, to celebrate and enjoy music and have fun. Often, you can watch musicians as young as 12 or experienced blues artists nearing 100 years old. On and off stage, it's very diverse.

Also, to me, what makes blues festivals in particular more unique is that they tend to be a starting ground for life-long friendships.

Who influenced you as far as piano playing? Who are some of your favorites, past and present?

I was greatly influenced by my grandfather, who taughtme how to play the piano, and my farther, who taught me to sing. My grandfather was playing honky tonk and genuine rock ‘n' roll piano with my dad and uncle long before I was born. I was later mentored by Reverend Billy C. Wirtz, who I toured with for a few years. Besides my family and mentors, other influences include Otis Spann and Pinetop Perkins, two blues piano titans. I also look up to friend Eden Brent and David Maxwell, two incredible current day piano masters.

You, JPand Damon all have very different vocal styles.

When I listen to JP I know I'm listening to someone reaching in and pulling it out; It's from the gut and from the heart. Given his diverse background in singing, I love hearing the mix of genres – and the experience that comes with that. It's controlled, but in

its own good way totally out of control. That is truly inspiring to me. Besides his vocal ability he also sings with his guitar, sometimes much louder and even more clear than any of us can sing with our voices.

Damon sings with a smoothness and control that I really admire and that definitely inspires me, too. In fact, sometimes when we're singing a song together, I catch myself mimicking what he's doing! I would consider Damon one of the best singers I've ever had the privilege to work with. It's from the heart and it's very moving.

I just try to sing as true and as soulfully as I can. It has to be honest. I want to move people and want to share my emotion with an audience, wether that's a fast funny boogie or a down low serious ballad.

You each seem to come from different blues traditions. Where do you find common ground? What is the common denominator?

Given all our diverse backgrounds,I think it's important to realize that we're actually coming from the same place when we're sharing a stage as Southern Hospitality. The common denominator is our passionand love for this music, our audience and each other.

Only time will tell, but I'd like to consider our roles within this music as significant; uniquely connected to its past, present and future. We all have a sense of humor and a willingness to step out on a limb for our art. With that being said, if you're not doing something different, then why do it at all?

What do you enjoy most about watching JP and Damon tangle on stage?

I love watching JP and Damon. I think what's so special about this band and what sets us apart from other similar groups is that we're all so close. We're genuine friends who talk to each other almost on a daily basis. Seeing that musical conversation between them two and feeling it myself, I can honestly say that it's something really special.

What is your definition of 'southern hospitality'?

‘Southern Hospitality,’ to me, is a friendship and love for each other and the music

we play, an openness and willingness to invite others in and an awareness of the responsibilities we have to ensure that all our fans leave happy or never leave at all. We formed this band on these principles – and also to leave no corner of this music unexplored and to continue to inspire ourselves and our friends and fans through our love and passion of this music.

Through all this musical diversity, our goal remains the same – to remain friends and to share that friendship on stage with any fan that is willing to join us.

Can you describe the unique kind of guitar you play and how you came to play it?

The guitar that I am playing is an Epiphone Joe Pass emperor. It's totally hollow and has a wooden bridge, which has a lot to do with the way it sounds. It’s actually a pretty cheap guitar. I started playing it about ten years ago. I was backing a harmonica player, Billy Burns, and he suggested that I play the hollowbody. I had the guitar for years before I really started playing it. It took a while to get used to, but now it's my favorite guitar to play. It's got its little quirks, but I know ‘em. It's like driving the same car for years –you don't have to look where the turn signal is or light switch is and you know you gotta hold the door a certain way to get it to close.

Who influenced you as far as guitar playing? Who are some of your favorites, past and present?

My dad plays guitar and is the one who got me started. I also have an uncle who plays guitar and bass. There was always music in our house. I associated the music with good times, happy times. They would have these parties and jam all night.

I've been influenced by a ton of stuff. I like a lot of different styles of music. I love Django

Reinhardt, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, Wes Montgomery, Johnny Guitar Watson, Guitar Slim, Junior Watson, Duke Robillard, Charlie Baty, Rick Holmstrom, I could go on and on. I also get influenced a lot by the people I play with. I've been influenced lately by Damon and Victor. I bought myself a lap-steel guitar a few months back and have been messing with a lot of open tuning stuff.

As a performer, what do you strive to give the audience at each show?

I try to give the audience my heart and soul. I try to convey a feeling to them, an emotion, an atmosphere. I want to make them happy, make them smile and forget about their troubles for a while.

Who influenced you as far as guitar playing? Who are some of your favorites?

Red Volkaert. I also love Mark Knopfler. What do you enjoy about playing the lap-top, dobro and slide guitar?

The reason I like playing slide is because there's a very human vocal quality to it.

You've covered songs by Leon Russell ('Tight Rope') and Merle Haggard ('Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down') and Chuck Prophet on your CDs – not your usual blues suspects. What did you hear in their songs that made you want to record them?

I choose the songs that I play because growing up I heard a lot of different styles of music and that's what comes out through me when I play. •

No Place Like Om

LET’S FACE IT. We have a lot of crap and stress to contend with every day. Our brains, while remarkable in their adaptability, are natural organisms battling it out in an unnatural world full of obstacles: waiting, noises, rudeness, social pressure, and weird food. The mental effects of this turmoil manifest in random shootings, road rage and a general dislike for our fellow humans. All it takes is one unprovoked selfish act to unleash negative feelings inside of any one of us. Mental stress can also cause the body to break down in a thousand different ways – high blood pressure, ulcers, bad skin, nervous tics, dull hair, muscle pain, and socially unacceptable digestive disorders, to name a few.

There are lots of ways to cope with stress – exercise, drugs, alcohol, food, padding, and let’s not forget institutionalization. Some are helpful and some only postpone the inevitable crash. But there is a miracle ‘drug.’ It’s right in front of you and it’s as free as the air you breathe. In fact, it is the air you breathe – combined with a daily meditation practice. It’s about turning down the volume in your mind and giving it a tune-up.

Giving your over-hyped brain a break for ten to twenty minutes, once or twice a day, can change your life. Not always in sudden and big ways, but often in subtler and gradual ways.

What meditation can do is make all of the things you have to deal with more bearable. It’s a simple way to bring order to the chaos in your cranium, and, eventually, to the rest of your life. If you exercise your body to have strong, healthy muscles – why not give your mind some of the same treatment? That’s precisely what meditation will do –make your mind strong, healthy and clear.

Meditation is a state of deep concentration in which the practitioner is keenly aware yet very still. In this state, you allow the mind to float without attaching to thoughts. Essentially, what you’re doing is training the mind to let go of clutter that impedes your mental functions (and can literally make you sick). The immediate

goal of meditation is to achieve peace. The long-term goals are mind maintenance, and physical and spiritual well-being. Spiritual well-being is different for everyone. It may manifest in your ability to focus on a goal, to not sweat the small stuff, to let go of things you have no control over, or to be happy even when things don’t go the way you planned.

There are many ways to meditate. You may do it by concentrating on sound (mantras or chants), visualization (a scene or object), physical sensations, or breathing. There is also a form of meditation called ‘mindfulness’ that entails being aware of the entire sensory experience (mind-body-emotion-sound) of each moment. You can meditate sitting on the floor, sitting on a chair, walking, doing exercises (yoga or tai chi) or laying down. The easiest way to begin a practice is with a seated, breathing meditation. It is more comfortable and familiar to most people. If you choose to sit crosslegged on the floor, you may want to use a cushion or blanket to take pressure off your knees and alleviate back discomfort.

Here’s what you do to start your daily practice:

• Set aside a time when no one will bother you (morning or evening are best)

• Turn the phone off

• Wear comfortable clothing

• Find a place to practice that is neutral & comfortable

• Practice in the same place every day when you can

• Get a cushion or folded blanket to put under your butt and sit in an easy, cross-legged position with hips elevated at or above the level of your knees. (If in a chair, you should be able to easily set your feet on the floor)

• Lengthen your spine, relax your shoulders down your back and rest your hands in your lap or on your knees

Now you’re ready to begin.

Close your eyes and start to observe your breath.

It’s about turning down the volume in your mind and giving it a tune-up.

Don’t alter it, just watch and listen. Feel it coming into and leaving your body. Let your thoughts come and go without attaching to any of them. Relax. Whenever you realize that your attention has wandered from the breath, return to it. Gradually deepen and lengthen your breathing – long and slow, in and out. You may want to count breaths or use a word or two to keep your concentration. For example, ‘at‘ on the inhale and ‘peace’ on the exhale. It doesn’t matter what the words are. And avoid getting distracted and questioning if you’re doing it right. Like any discipline or form of exercise, meditation gets easier with practice.

We’ve heard all of the arguments against it. I can’t sit still for five minutes. I have too much energy. It’s boring. I’d rather run a marathon. Fortunately, practicing yoga and meditation clicked for me when I began to realize how much this meditation was doing to alleviate stresses in my gogo life. The whole concept of ‘stillness’ was novel. It was also quite challenging to achieve and still is. It may take years of effort to achieve true stillness, but meditation is simple and rewarding. You just take a moment to breathe and sit, sit and breathe. Each moment leads to the next, which leads to the next, one at a time through time. Aim for five minutes per session in the beginning. When comfortable with that shoot for ten and then twenty minutes. The longer you meditate, the stronger your mind will get and the more grounded you will feel. But even for

Concentrative Meditation

Attention is focused on your breath or an image or sound in your mind, or an object. Most people find it easier to meditate with eyes closed so staring at an object is not especially popular. It is easiest to focus on your breath, concentrating on inhaling and exhaling. Say a one-syllable word or utter a sound, tone or chant to yourself at each exhale. When distracted return your focus on breathing.

V isualizing Meditation

If concentrative meditation proves too difficult consider visualizing after your body relaxation. Allow your mind to journey to a beautiful and peaceful place – perhaps a beach, a garden or a mountaintop. Try to experience the sights, sounds, smells textures, tastes and energies of that special place in detail and understanding.

Mindfulness Meditation

This type of meditation involves simply heightening your awareness to your place and time. It strives to ‘keep you in the moment’ by witnessing and appreciating what is happening in your mind as well as in the quiet of your surroundings.
