Paintings of Cottages and Waterways of Old Naples

Hurricanes, affluence and modern housing expectations have forever changed the ambiance of Old Naples. The iconic cottages and hidden tunnels of mangrove trees to the beach are becoming a rare sight. The contemporary art gallery, Things I Like by Catherine will host an opening reception on

January 26 for an exhibition of paintings and photographs of the cottages and waterways of Old Naples by Mark Hunt.

Hunt has been coming to the area for 20 years, visiting his mother and escaping the brutal Boston winters for two weeks every February. An avid roller-blader and professional photographer, Mark would cruise around the neighborhoods taking pictures and capturing that special splitsecond moment in time which makes a great photograph.

A book of Old Naples Cottages that his mom had in her home piqued his interest and he began seeking them out to photograph and eventually paint. As the years went by, he started to notice the cottages disappearing, being replaced with much larger homes. Where there were once small houses with expansive lawns and large palm trees, there are now large homes with no open space. While progress cannot be stopped, looking at the paintings in this exhibition will make you smile, feel nostalgic, and think of your own childhood experiences.

The reception is January 26, 5-8pm. Admission is free. Things I Like by Catherine Contemporary Art Gallery is located at 3954 Bayshore Drive in Naples. For information, call 778-4665.
