Internal Landscapes: The Mysterious World of Steven Kenny

January 21 – April 15

The exhibition features nearly 50 paintings by renowned surrealist painter, Steven Kenny, including two recent donations to the museum’s permanent collection. The exhibition highlights Kenny’s love of mysticism, focusing on the beauty and mystery of a world of contradictions and unpredictability, where men and women are adorned with mysterious headdresses and meld into the landscape to become one with nature. As ethereal and physical worlds collide, the subconscious emerges through surreal yet harmonious symbolic juxtapositions. His refined craftsmanship and lush colors create a world where reality is not as it appears but as he understands it.

The 1867 oil-on-canvas, measuring almost 10 by 15 feet, will be installed following conservation in Miami. The painting, created during a period of self-discovery for Americans fascinated by the western landscape, depicts one of the nation's most admired natural wonders. In an era when California remained a distant and inaccessible region for most Americans, Bierstadt's monumental painting offered viewers a compelling personal experience of its grandeur. The painting has not been on display outside the Athenaeum since its first installation in 1872.

Breaking with traditional depictions of biblical narratives, Rembrandt added emotional and psychological depth to his subjects through expressive faces, dramatic body language, and his bold use of shadow and light. In Rembrandt’s interpretation of Protestant Old Testament narratives, he consulted Jewish theologians for a nuanced perspective. He also painted and etched portraits of prominent Jews.

When you can’t get outside for some nature, experiencing a Corso could be just the invigorating jolt you need to get on with your day. No, it’s not a new brand of coffee; it’s the work that acclaimed artist Frank Corso delivers each time he takes paint to canvas. Sweeping, delirious sunset beach vistas and charming countryside panoramas exist alongside portrayals of our cherished Florida Everglades. His ever-growing audience of over 30 years is always eager to see what the next ‘Corso’ is going to be.

It’s not so surprising then, to discover that his technique is a deft combination of sheer talent, years of practice and study, as well as total immersion. Yes, Mr. Corso is known to have planted his easel in the middle of his intended scene, be it a flooded Everglades prairie or the late afternoon mist of a mountain lake, in order to truly live the moment that he’s bringing to life. Not that he’s taking so many chances anymore, especially in the Everglades.

Frank explains, “When I first came down to Florida I was doing that. It kind of spooked me, but it was always kind of exciting. I’ve never been able to take a photograph that represents what I saw out there. It does introduce an entirely different element of danger into the mix when you’re out there by yourself! I’d walk three, four miles out in those prairies and I’d be coming back at eight or nine at night, in the dark. It’s amazing that I never stepped on a snake!” From safer surroundings, Corso continues to bring to life a myriad of vivid landscapes depicting nature’s true beauty at varying times of day. At first glance you might even think you’re looking at a photograph. It’s a technique he calls the illusion of realism.

“When you look at my paintings up close, it’s not much detail,” he says, “It’s all brush strokes and paint. You get a good two feet away and it looks all blurry. When you stand 10 feet back it looks clear. I’ve worked on that for many years. I do a couple strokes, then back up and look at it. When I paint outside you’ll see a 1015 foot strip back from the easel because I’m walking back and forth to look at it.” Frank adds, “I like to paint the feeling. That’s something that I’ve worked on as long as I’ve been painting. I have a big painting at the Ritz Carlton Tiburon and people comment all the time.”

During a recent visit to his studio, we could see from both up close and a few feet back the canvas he was currently working on and understand his logic. Also, sitting on the floor next to his easel were a banjo and guitar, since as it turns out, Frank is also quite the musician. He paused for a moment during our conversation, picked up the banjo and strummed a few chords.

‘Music and art for me have always gone hand in hand,” he ruminates,” I don’t really know which one I like more. I can’t imagine my life without either one of them. I always have three or four guitars set up on one side. I’ll paint for a couple hours, then I’ll sit down and play. Then I’ll paint. Even when I’m painting, I’ll write lyrics. I’ll write them on my iPhone, then I’ll go back later and finish fabricating the song. It just happens that I make a living from painting, but both go hand in hand.”

Corso remembers what first inspired him to paint when he was a young boy growing up in Syracuse, New York, “When I was a kid my parents had a painting on the wall of a fall scene and a creek. I just really loved it. I would sit there on the couch and just stare at that painting. I started drawing, and I found out pretty quickly that I was good at drawing. My mother sent me to the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse. Then I got to be pretty good at drawing from that point on.”

He took art classes in school, even switching high schools to focus more on his craft. This is where his teacher, oil painter George Benedict, became a mentor, influencing Frank to switch from pastels to oils, hosting classes at his home at night. With high school ending, Frank was shocked to learn his parents, who had been supportive of his art all along, insisted he major in something more ‘realistic’ in college. He decided on architecture as a close substitute, but his true calling was too strong. Around this time, he also met Austrian painter Robert Hoffmann.

A lifetime of work behind him, including painting celebrities, Hoffmann became a mentor to Corso as well, “I met him at an art show where I was playing my guitar. He was around 80 when we met. I went to his house and I saw a life size portrait of Winston

www.ftmyersmagazine.com 33 JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2018
“Frank’s paintings play off the tension between the beauty, danger and fundamental loneliness of places like the Everglades.”

Churchill. He said, ‘I can teach you how to paint. If you want to be an artist you have to learn how to cry.’ He became my closest friend and I was with him, studying and painting, until he died at 98. I studied everything he could give me. Robert and George were hugely inspirational to me. When everyone else was telling me I couldn’t do this, they were telling me I could.“

Back in southwest Florida, Corso has garnered quite the following. Collector and friend of 13 years, Selma Nettle owns close to two dozen Corsos. She says, “Frank’s paintings play off the tension between the beauty, danger and fundamental loneliness of places like the Everglades or a northern river. My favorites are the late in the day Florida paintings where you can almost feel the heat and see the light shimmer in the hazy surroundings.” Gardner Colby Gallery in Naples is the area’s foremost gallery to view Corso’s works.

Gallery owner Nancy Winch says, “Gardner Colby’s relationship with Frank Corso goes back more than 20 years, to 1994, when we first opened our gallery on Martha’s Vineyard. In the years we’ve represented him, Frank has firmly established himself asthepreeminent interpreter of the Florida landscape. We are proud to have a been a part of this true ‘Renaissance Man’s’ growing legacy.”

Gardner Colby will host the first exhibition of Corso’s works in more than two years in February, with an opening reception on February 21. You can also catch his musician side when he performs his repertoire of ‘ragtime country blues’ as part of Neopolitan Cluster Pluckin’ at The Woodwork on Saturday, January 18. Corso will also be performing as part of the Palmgrass concert series at the Alliance of the Arts in Fort Myers on April 29. You could say

that Frank Corso has figured out how to live life by one’s own direction.

“I love portrait painting, but the problem is there was too much direction from other people. I finally just said I’m done with this because I don’t want someone else telling me what to do. That’s how I’ve lived my whole life, by following my own set of rules and not listening to other people. I believe in what I’m doing,” he reflects, adding, “It was that painting above the couch when I was young. It was like a magic trick that I really loved. That’s the magic of oil painting that I love so much.” •

The opening reception for ‘Corso!,’ an exhibition of new works by Frank Corso, is February 21, 5:30-7:30pm. The reception is free and open to the public. Gardner Colby Galleries is located at 386 & 365 Broad Avenue South in downtown Naples. For information, call 403-7787.

www.ftmyersmagazine.com 35 JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2018

The sun was shining and traffic remained light as I drove past the manicured lawns and upscale resorts thatsurround Third Street in Naples. This area of town is enchanting with its assortment of boutiques and restaurants, the perfect place for cultures to converge and flourish. I found parking almost directly in front of my target, the Arsenault Studio & Banyan Arts Gallery, where I was to meet with Paul Arsenault to discuss his current and upcoming shows.

I walk upstairs where Paul has assembled quite a collection of work within several spacious rooms. Many of the pieces he has on display focus on the 14 months he spent in the West Indies approximately 40 years ago. Alongside his own paintings, the gallery also displaysartwork by Paul’s much appreciated artist colleagues who share his love for nature. Currently on display is impressionist, James P. Kerr and world-renowned landscape photographer, Clyde Butcher.

Eileen, Paul’s wife and partner, greets me and explains that Paul is making his way back from their home, only a block away, with some additional paintings for me to view.

Paul Arsenault has seemingly been documenting the world as he sees it through his art for much of his life, from his early years in New England, to his travels abroad, to the time he has spent cruising up and down the Gulf Coast.

In fact, throughout Paul and Eileen’smarriage they would often take time annually to visit family and friends back in Eileen’s home state of Louisiana. During such excursions, the Arsenaults would systematically duck into ports along the way, a habit Paul says they have continued to nurture for over the past 40 years. It has allowed both of them to develop their unique perspective and abundantenthusiasm for the history of the gulfside coastal communities.“We’ve been very fortunate to be able to move around and keep this going.”

Paul says he has always been drawn to the waterfront, simply painting the scenes in front of him at the time. Part of that process happened to include capturing the many background stories that accompanied the area. This helped to morph Paul into an

historian of sorts. “I went from painter on the waterfront to painter on the waterfront in historic days to modern day.” Paul says for him, coming home with a painting was one thing, but coming back with a painting and a story meant so much more.“That's what becomes the historical part of it. It’s one thing to have a painting, but to have a caption that really goes into it, it just gives it weight and a dimension that really adds to the experience.”

He says he tries to consciously pick and choose the way his art depicts a community.“I’m inspired by community, and try to expand on what makes that community special. I’m not trying to be a window in a sentimental journey, but more of a window into a special place that

JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2018 36 www.ftmyersmagazine.com

deserves acknowledgement, unifying humanity and nature.”

I asked him if he had an overall personal message he would like to convey.“Honor the time you are here. Honor the place. Glorify it, and while you’re at it, leave things as intact as possible, something for the next generation,” was his answer.

Coinciding with Paul’s message to leave something for the next generation, he and Eileen have chosen to make their residence walking distance from the gallery, in a historic home that sits directly next to one of the oldest grand banyan trees in Naples. They lovingly refer to the residential property as‘The Banyan

Art, Social and Pleasure Club’. The pleasure club doubles as the publishing division of Arsenault Studios. The name was inspired by a New Orleans tradition. Paul explains,“In New Orleans it’s customary, when non-related people begin hanging out in a spot, they establish a social aid andpleasure club. The group gathers together making plans for Mardi Gras or food drives and the like.”

By the time they moved in, during the early 1980’s, the property had previously been used as a rental for close to 40 years. Consequently, they found many writers and painters had taken refuge, at one time or another, on site. One of them being the poet Robert Frost, whose stay was restricted to about a week. Others included Emil and Robert Gruppe, John Ruthven, Richard Segalman, and James P. Kerr.

The Arsenaults have hosted many art related events in theresidence throughout the

years, with proceeds going towards helping the art and environmental communities, and humanitarian aid, locally and globally. Paul explains that in order to continue their efforts, renovations are necessary. The home’s 100 year anniversary is in 2018. The first order of business is lifting part of the sagging structure.“We have quite a list and a legacy, which is the reason we’re trying to straighten her up,” he admits.

Currently on view at the Marco Island HistoricalSociety is a collection of Paul’s work displayed under the title‘Coastal Trade: Bounty, Booty, and Boats of the Gulf and Glades from Naples to Key West.’ The show consists of paintings representing the pioneer days of Southwest Florida’s maritime trading networks. Aside from paintings, there are folk art exhibits, posters and artifacts relating to the heritage.

Paul includes many historically referenced pieces, such as work depicting many of the ships that transferred merchandise and passengers, and plied the Gulf catching fish and making deliveries. These include the‘Ina’ and ‘Bertie Lee,’ and a pirate ship turned floating home office for Mel Fisher in the 1970’s. He also includes fish houses of Naples and the Isle of Capri, markets and general stores of Key West, clam canneries on Marco Island, and trading posts of the Everglades

used by pioneers and SeminoleIndians. Also included are images of many of the homesteads used by early growers whose produce was brought to market from deep in the Everglades.

Paul’s execution of the artwork would not be complete had he not had the opportunity to sit with many of the oldtimers with solid roots in the area.“I could approach them with confidence, because mygrandfather had a lumber schooner,” he says. Many times, the pioneers Paul often spoke with were in their 90s back in the 1970s and 1980s, meaning they grew up in the areaoften times as early as the 1890’s.“They were the Tom Sawyers of the pioneer generation,” Paul says.

Recounting his interactions with the locals of the time, Paul speaks about Rob Storter, whose uncle had owned the Rod & Gun Club.“His daddy also had the Birdie Lee. At 90 years old he created a half model of the Birdie Lee, which he continued tomaintain. It was the prettiest schooner of Southwest Florida,” he relates. “We have a description of how he sat on the foredeck coming into Key West going by Mallory Dock Steamship Wharf, the sponge docks, the shrimp docks…”

Paul continues, “All these worlds of waterfront commerce through the eyes of this guy. He was so rich with information. That’s really what got me going and the same with another guy from the schooner Ina. I met him in Tarpan Springs when I was setting up a show. He comes over to me and says,‘Oh my God!That’s the Ina!’ He said his father had the marina at Old Marco and the Ina used to come in every couple of years to get her bottom redone. He was 89 back in 1975 when I met him,” adding, “So, those are the kinds of stories that lock me in, not only as a painter-observer, but in an engagement of the history from the guys that lived though it when they were kids.”

Paul says, “The Marco show contains a lot of rich material, image wise, and the stories make you proud. A lot of people feel they’ve ended up in Florida out of default. This is theiradopted home. Thisisn’t where their roots are. This isn’t where Grannie held them on the knee.”

Paul says he finds Florida history to be

dismissed by a lot of people in this day and age. He wants tosurprise people by showing them that there actually is rich history, especially in communities such as Marco Island and the like.“Marco had remarkable history. So did all of the communities here. They all have their story,” he insists.

I was curious. Even though he had met with so many old timers and received countless stories from the past, did he ever feel it necessary to use reference material to bring to life the scenes in his paintings?

“A lot of the best paintings I’ve got I did on location, just because I was painting the waterfront back when I did. It’s changed a lot, of course, but I also learned that to really tell more about the key cornerstones of history, sometimes it’s good to throw in a black and white shot of how it was,” he explains.“Using a black and white shot, perhaps a couple of them, to recreate something, that is... Wow! That’s how it really looked!”

He continues, “I was involved with the early stages of building and fundraising for the Marco Museum. During that time, I was also tapped as curator through Tallahassee to choose artists to depict the four corners of Marco, including Caxambus, Old Marco, Goodland, and Horr’s Island (now called Key Marco). We called the fundraising effort ‘Art Interprets History.’ We were each given a quadrant to represent the four different corners of Marco. Each artist created two pieces. One painting would go for charity andfundraising, the other painting’s proceeds went to the artist. But, we used old photographs to interpret the history. Thanks to the unveilings, many pledges came in to help build the museum in record time. It was a remarkably fast and successful commitment to the community of Marco, and it’s history.”

What’s next for Paul Arsenault? Aside from his current show, his next will take him into the Everglades and the new community of Ava Maria. The show’s current title is‘Harvesting Bounty, Preserving Paradise, Seeking Balance in Southwest Florida’ and is scheduled for late February. The show honors Lee County and North Collier with elements starting from the Everglades and working their way to the coast.

Paul is already quite established in Collier County, but admits that up until recently he hasn’t taken the opportunity to gain much exposure in Lee. Part of Paul’s excitement behind working with Ava Maria stems from the fact they are not your typical gallery, nor museum. They are actually a library.“This will be a really big show,” he explains. “It’s a great building, and very well regarded. Quite frankly, I’ve done a lot on my own. I haven’t

really partnered with galleries or academically. I just arrive and put on my show, and I haven’t organizedmyself in the fine arts up north, in Lee County, so this was an opening to put myself out there with strong historical imagery and elementsfrom history people might not know.”

Paul’s focus over the years has not always been strictly on exhibitions. He has organized several publications including calendars and storybooks. Once he began publishing his work it seemed people were shocked. He jokes, “They had no idea I left Old Naples. They thought I was such a backwater rat.”

This backwater rat appears to have been slinking away, and quite often. His publications are filled with scenes from the Bahamas to New England, Oman to Iran, Dubai to Boston, Nantucket to Florida. They include adventures such as hoppingfreight trains, and tales of early Corkscrew, indian days with the Smallwood store, and Chokoloskee before Hurricane Andrew tore it down.

Paul’s lifetime of work, his endless travels, and his ability to not only be an artist, showing historythrough images captured in time, but also as a storyteller, helping secure history as it really was, from a community’s perspective, keeps us acutely aware of the changes that have taken place over time.

Paul notes, “Iinadvertently kind of assumed myself into a position of historian, not intending to, but just painting the scenes and taking names and stories.” And what a storyteller Paul is! He has the ability to recount namesand places as if he were there yesterday. This storytelling ability coupled with his unrestrained artistic talent make any exhibition of his an interesting and entertaining event. •

utsider Artists is not a new term, but neither is it one that is readily recognized, even by those in the profession. It’s a term sometimes used to describe artists who haven’t had the privilege of a formal education and who create their craft outside the boundaries of the official art culture. Local artist Mel Meo totally relates to this term.

“I heard this phrase while listening to a program on National Public radio. It’s a phenomenon of its own. Outsiders come from all walks of life, all cultures, all age groups. The common denominator is that we are self taught and don’t follow the normal rules of the masters. I even discovered that there are enough of us to warrant our own art galleries.”

Meo, a serious full-time artist and Pine Island legend, moved to Florida from Indianapolis in 1970 when she was 12 years old. “My mother was drawn to the Calusa Mounds located on the south side of the island known as Bokeelia.” Meo loved the beautiful, peaceful place but there wasn’t much entertainment for kids.

Out of boredom, she began to imitate her artistic brother David. “I decided to try my hand at art. I focused on watercolors because it’s a portable medium and l could carry everything I needed with me as I hiked around the island looking for interesting things to paint.” Her first subjects included the mounds, fishing boats and what she calls her version of people. “I’m not a portrait artist, but our local people are interesting and make great subjects. My version of people may not be the norm, but it’s my interpretation and I love painting them.”

From that time forward Meo knew that creating was the one thing that made her happy. She continued to find outlets

for her newfound love such as sewing and illustrating cook books. She began making and painting simple things like aprons and tee shirts. “I have an insatiable need to create. It’s with me when I go to bed at night and it’s there when I wake up in the morning. The only thing that changes is the process, the medium and the surface on which it appears.”

She started her family at the age of 20 and within five years had three children. Although her days were filled doing family things she managed to become a full-time working artist because as her family grew so did the need for extra income.

She credits fate for the evolution of her talents. Her success is based on giving customers what they want. As trends change, so does her art. “I’ve been known to re-invent myself over and over,” she says. “Some artists say that’s a sell-out, but I don’t agree. I’m a realist and don’t fit into any specific category. I like to get to the authenticity of the subject. To me that’s what gives the painting heart and soul. I would say my work is chameleon-like. Whatever comes my way and is my muse at the moment is what I focus on. But I don’t compromise because I think that’s what selling out is.”

Meo was the first artistto establish an artsy store on Bokeelia. “It was 1982 and I was the Lone Ranger for quite a while before other galleries started popping up. Like everything else in my life, the store just happened. I was working at a restaurant and customers saw and liked my art. Eventually I opened a store in a back room of the building.”

She filled it with a mixed bag of her own original art

as well as that of other local artists. The store was soon filled with painted furniture, clothing, hand made aprons and canvas bags, wall art, hand painted greeting cards, memorabilia, and anything else that paint would adhere to. The pieces were funky, unusual, colorful, whimsical and priced right.

The one thing the store didn’t have was a name, but that didn’t stop customers from finding her. Before long, the back room shop became a destination and customers from all over south Florida made the trip to Bokeelia to purchase and enjoy her art. To this day Meo is amazed and grateful when people buy her eccentric and cheerful creations.

The next step of her career was a natural progression; art lessons. The beginner class is called Hibiscus 101 and it’s more about learning technique than painting the flower itself. She loves teaching and is always on the lookout for local talent.

Meo has much to be proud of.She credits Robert Rauschenberg for one of her biggest achievements. “I donated a painting I did right after 9/11 to an Arts for ACT auction. It was called ‘Tower of Hope’ and Rauschenberg purchased it for $15,000. It all went to charity, but I didn’t mind. ACT is a good cause and I was proud to help.” Rauschenberg, one of the greatest American artists of the 20th Century, lived and painted in New York, but also had a home and worked on Captiva.

During 30 years of producing art on the island her transformations have been voluntary. That is until hurricane Irma hit last summer. That storm forced her to change directions out of need rather than desire.

Meo is still recovering from Irma’s wrath. Her house, studio and Air B&B were all damaged. Due to flooding and roof leaks she was forced to move her art to a myriad of places. “Life immediately after Irma was hard for a lot of people and businesses. Everyone was so busy trying to survive and cleaning up their property that luxury items such as art was the last thing on their mind. That was not good for me because art is my livelihood. But like everyone else we will be okay eventually.”

Throughout the years she’s

actively supported many charities especially Beacon of Hope, an organization that helps the United Way. “Little did I realize that one day I would be a recipient of their help. After Irma I learned first-hand how important charities can be. I don’t know what I would have done without them.”

In spite of Irma’s chaos her future looks bright and, as usual, filled with creative ideas that include expanding her horizons. Like everything in her life, the first opportunity to do so fell right into her lap. She was an invited guest on two trips to fantastic and very different countries; Italy and Haiti. “I spent two wonderful weeks in Italy. Their cultural base is so vast I couldn’t absorb it all in such a short time so I took pictures of everything. I have beautiful images of olive and lemon trees, vineyards, poppy fields, landscapes, goats, chickens and dotted houses on the mountain sides.”

Meo’s experience in Haiti was quite different. “I was only there for seven days and my mission was charity work. It was the middle of August, very hot and there was no air conditioning. I didn’t have much time or extra energy to do any painting, but again I took a lot of pictures of landscapes, people, seascapes, and birds.” She says all of her experiences will eventually appear on canvas.

Regrets? She has a few. “I’ve always wanted to study and paint in a big city, but I never had that luxury. I’m finally beginning to feel re-energized and plan to approach some galleries on the east coast [of Florida] as soon as possible.Several of them have exhibited my work in the past so I’m hoping for a warm welcome. I also plan to research and learn more about Outsider Artist galleries.”

Also on her calendar is to continue mentoring her son, Nate. “I’m proud that he has already developed his own style. We’ve painted two series together, mangroves and crabs, and plan on doing other groupings. You can be sure that his art will be in the store when it re-opens.”

As for her business future, it’s not entirely clear yet. “Repairs of the store are almost complete. I’m very excited about it, but I’m ready to move on to new adventures. I’ve decided to pass the torch on to one of my creative family members. I will still be involved, but not on a day to day basis.

Mel expects her studio/store to open within the first couple of months of 2018. •

Leonard Bernstein at 100

2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein, American composer, conductor, pianist, educator, activist, and humanitarian. He has been called "one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history."

“Lately, I’ve been disturbed by the racial-tension, rise of the white supremacy movement, the violence in America, and wanting with the art we present to combat it at Florida Rep. Recently I’ve thought a lot about a favorite quote of mine which is from Leonard Bernstein, ‘This will be our reply to violence, make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before!’ In other words, to combat the ugliness of the world with a greater devotion to creating beautiful, joyous theatre at the Rep.

“How can we measure the reach of Bernstein's influence? While we celebrate his contributions as a composer, let us not forget his magnificent impact as teacher. His Young People's Concerts broadcast on CBS from 19581972 brought symphonic masterpieces into American homes, and Bernstein's thoughtful commentary made these works accessible to listeners. Through him, everyday citizens could understand and enjoy symphonic works. For me, his Harvard Lectures inspired me when I watched them as an undergraduate, and continue to open my ears as I view them today.”

“Leonard Bernstein was a huge influence for me and my wanting to pursue a career in conducting. I grew up watching him conduct on the newly created cable channel A&E and had the opportunity to see him live at Carnegie Hall a year before he passed away. Leonard Bernstein is also responsible for bridging the gap between classical music, jazz and musical theatre.”

“Leonard Bernstein is a shining example of what it means to be an American artist. Not only was he an incredible talent, he was an avid activist — who used his talents to not only create prolific works of art, but to promote positive social change, promote classical styles of art, and better his community. As a kid, I remember seeing him conducting on TV and hearing him speaking with passion about the world around him. To this day, I strive to be an artist that is as inspired and as engaged as he was.”

“I love that Bernstein was a ‘cool cat.’ An amazing musician and composer who enjoyed the popular music of his day. No snobbery from this man. Bernstein was open minded. When asked about The Beatles he replied... ‘Three bars of ‘A Day In The Life’ still sustain me, rejuvenate me, inflame my senses and sensibilities'.”

Best Albums of 2017 P

ERHAPS IT WASa recent visit to New Orleans that skewed my opinions of last year’s best albums, but I’d like to think that the music of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Hot 8 Brass Band and Delfeayo Marsalis would have made my list nonetheless. The Crescent City has a long and legendary history as a hotbed of musical talent and the latest releases by the aforementioned artists continue that tradition and push it even a bit farther.

On The Spot , the fifth album by The Hot 8 Brass Band , explodes with unbridled energy, infectious passions and an unequalled zeal to party. The record is a roaring celebration of life. Originals like ‘8 Kickin’ It Live,’

‘Can’t Nobody Get Down’ and ‘Keepin’

It Funky’ are exactly what you’d expect all party all the time. Songs like Stevie Wonder’s ‘That Girl,’ and Sade’s ‘Sweetest Taboo’ get the New Orleans treatment and become brand new. But

it’s the band’s 8-minute take on the classic blues of ‘St. James Infirmary,’ that somehow sets it apart from all previous versions (no small feat) that best exemplifies how great the Hot 8 are.

This is Mardi Gras music at its best, a clamoring of horns and chants impossible to resist, music that uplifts as it gets down.

Possibly the greatest of all New Orleans’ jazz bands, the iconic Preservation Hall Jazz Band, might have made their best album yet of their long and illustrious career. So It Is is a combustible gumbo of Crescent City funk spiced up with Cuban rhythms.

The title track opens the record with a smooth, jazzy shuffle, before exploding into the frenzied pace of ‘Santiago,’ which like ‘La Malanga,’ showcase the influence and inspiration of Cuba on the album, re-invigorating their sound, infusing their more traditional New Orleans-style jazz with newfound fervor. This is classic jazz performed with the impeccable taste and unequalled class that the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been famous for for decades.

With the release of his two previous albums (Sweet Thunder: Duke and Shak and The Last Southern Gentleman ), Delfeayo Marsalis has achieved a level of acclaim nearing that of his older brothers, Branford and Wynton. The New Orleans native has

made his best record yet, Kalamazoo, a live recording of Delfeayo fronting a quartet that included his father, Ellis, bassist Reginald Veal and drummer Ralph Peterson. From the very first honks of ‘Tin Roof Blues’ to the last muted musings of ‘Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans,’ the concert features Delfeayo’s slinky, sultry, sensual trombone playing, cementing him as possibly the best jazz trombonist of our time. The album also features the too-often underappreciated piano playing of Ellis. The two together make for a formidable team. Although the band’s renditions of standards

‘Autumn Leaves,’ ‘If IWere a Bell’ and ‘It Don’t Mean a Thing

If It Ain’t Got That Swing’ are outstanding, reverent yet new, it is their surprising take on the ‘Sesame Street Theme’ (which he declares he recently realized was a blues) and ‘My Funny Valentine’ (which is as soulful and delicate as any) that stand out. With Kalamazoo, Delfeayo has become an equal among brothers.

Chano Dominguez may be the greatest jazz pianist alive that you have never heard of, and Over the Rainbow, a remarkable recording of a 2012 solo performance, is just the album to make you a fan.

An endlessly inventive and often provocative player, his music is infused with the many and varied Spanish musical traditions. Throughout the album you will be awestruck by the sophisticated eloquence of his music. A pristine live recording, you will be hard-pressed to find a more gorgeous 74 minutes of piano playing, not the least of which is Chano’s breathtakingly beautiful version of ‘Over the Rainbow.’

With equal parts Chicago, Memphis and Delta blues, the man known as The Soul of John Black (John Bigham is his real name) has released, Early in the Moanin’ , the album his career was always leading him to. After years with the band Fishbone and working with several producers on previous solo records, Bigham produced this record himself and the result is as impressive a blues record as any in recent years.

Imagine a mix of Bill Withers’ rich vocals and Gary Clark, Jr.’s raunchy guitar, a mix of John Lee Hooker and Dr. Dre, and you’ll have some idea of what The Soul of John Black is all about. But although he sounds familiar he is an original. Standouts are the title track, the swampy blues

of ‘Crooked Leg’ and ‘Cher,’ on which you might think you were listening to Bill Withers himself (it’s that good!). There isn’t a blues fan alive who won’t love this record.

Imelda May burst onto the scene with a kick-ass rockabilly band, a nouveau-retro look and a bunch of ballsy, bluesy songs. But after a few albums and guest spots singing with Jeff Beck, it was clear that her shtick would limit her creativity. Along comes producer extraordinaire, T Bone Burnett to guide her back to her music roots and help her find a newfound depth to her songwriting. Songs like ‘Call Me’ and ‘The Girl I Used to Be’ show off a far more vulnerable side than evident on her previous records, but it is songs like ‘Black Tears’ and ‘When It’s My Time’ that showcase that same sassy, sexy voice. Old fans will not be disappointed with Life Love Flesh Blood — songs like ‘Bad Habit’ wouldn’t be out of place on her previous records — and she should gain a whole lot more new admirers.

Jim Lauderdale ’s velvety vocals and easygoing style are hard to resist, and coupled with some of the strongest songwriting of his long career (it’s his 29th album), London Southern is among his best work to date. The Nashville veteran teams up here with Nick Lowe’s band and whether it be the hornenhanced soul of ‘I Can’t Do Without You,’ the gospel influenced ‘What Do You Have to Lose?,’ the jazzy blues of ‘If I Can Resist,’ the honky tonk fun of ‘Don’t Shut Me Down,’ or the melancholy ballad, ‘I Love You More,’ Lauderdale has put together a collection of original songs with a soulful country groove that defies easily definable genres.

Things have recently gotten very real for Justin Townes Earle and if Kids in the Street is any indication of how he hopes to meet his new life’s demands — sobriety, marriage, impending fatherhood — he should have nothing to worry about. At the very least, he’s making the best music of his life. With the experience and confidence of six albums behind him, Earle tackles

rockin’ rockabilly (‘Champagne Corolla’), heartbreaking honky tonk (‘What’s She Crying For?’), jazzy swing (‘What’s Goin’ On’), New Orleans’ R&B (‘15-25’), and bluesy soul (‘There Goes A Fool’) with the same songwriting prowess and sense of fun.

THE HOT 8 BRASS BAND On the Spot (TRU-THOUGHTS)

Earle has a way of being both of the country and comfortably urban, thoroughly modern and somewhat old-timey, a serious social commentator and a goodhumored balladeer. Perhaps that is why he can embrace so many and varied musical genres to convey his maturing personal angst and world view. His best album to date and a foreshadowing of better things to come.

if you were to hear just their heartbreaking versions of Townes van Zandt’s ‘You Are Not Needed Now’ and Bob Dylan’s ‘Minstrel Boy’ you might become a fan of Jolie Holland & Samantha Parton, but you would be missing so much more that they have to offer. Their own ‘Make It Up to Me’ showcases both their beautiful harmonies and insightful songwriting, and might be the best track on Wildflower Blues.

Their sound can best be described as soulful folk music, with simple instrumentation, sultry vocals, and thoughtful songs.

V an Morrison released two albums within weeks of each other in late 2017 and you would be hardpressed to choose between the two for which is best. Roll With the Punches is bluesier and Versatile is mostly jazz and pop standards, so the one you choose will have a lot to do with your musical predisposition.

VAN MORRISON

Roll With the Punches (CAROLINE) Versatile (SONY)

Roll With the Punches features blues classics like T Bone Walker & Doc Pomus’ ‘Stormy Monday/ Lonely Avenue,’ Count Basie’s ‘Going to Chicago,’‘ Lightning Hopkins’ ‘Automobile Blues,’ and Bo Diddley’s ‘Ride On Josephine’ as well as Van’s more topical takes on the modern condition like ‘Ordinary People’ and ‘Fame.’ And it also features Jeff Beck on guitar on five tracks. Hearing these two rock giants together is a real treat. Morrison is still one of the great vocalists of our time and if his range and power may be diminishing slightly it is more than compensated for with his religious devotion to the music.

On Versatile, Van dives into standards like ‘Makin’ Whoopee,’ ‘I Get a Kick Out of You,’ ‘The Party’s Over,’ and ‘They Can’t Take That Away From Me.’ But it is his versions of ‘Bye Bye Blackbird,’ ‘Let’s Get Lost’ and ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco’ that stand out and prove again that Van is the man. After releasing a few albums in recent years that were not among his best work, it is nice to hear him return to form with not one, but two outstanding albums filled with great songs and an even greater spirit. •
