ACADEMICS ACADEMICS are the focus of the instructional work at Mount de Sales. The curriculum is college preparatory and carries with it high expectations and challenging work. All classes intend to complement the spiritual growth and total formation of each student. To graduate, each student is required to earn service hours, attend scheduled retreats, and complete summer reading requirements all four years.
COURSE PLACEMENT | Incoming freshmen whose High School Placement Test scores qualify may sit for placement tests for particular subjects. Because each girl’s strengths are unique, Mount de Sales does not have a track system. Instead, students take course work at various levels and have the opportunity to change levels between one year and the next.

GUIDANCE The GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT, led by Director of Academic Services Mary Jo Puglisi, is comprised of a freshman-sophomore counselor, a junior-senior counselor, a college counselor, and the registrar.

THE SACRED HEART PROGRAM PROGRAM DESCRIPTION | This is a four-year program that addresses the individual needs of everyone in program. Most students will have one class period every other day called the Sacred Heart Seminar. During this session students will report to the learning support center to meet with program staff for individual and/or small group instruction. Sacred Heart Program staff will construct weekly lesson plans for each student, addressing her individual needs. The focus of this class time will be individualized to each student and will include working on improving academic skills, remediation, and assistance with class work, study skills, time management, organizational skills, and test-taking strategies. Students who are diagnosed with a learning disability or ADHD during their high school years may apply for the Sacred Heart Program. Students requiring less support are still able to take advantage of the Sacred Heart Program through weekly coach sessions and individualized plans. In addition to Sacred Heart Seminar classes, the program offers resources to students and parents through quarterly group meetings and individual meetings, as needed.

TECHNOLOGY Mount de Sales Academy launched a Windows-based ONETO-ONE PROGRAM in the 2015-2016 school year. Mount de Sales’ approach to technology adheres to our philosophy that “traditional disciplines are enhanced by those practices which are most effective in modern methods of teaching.” The Technology Integration Program is designed to enhance the Mount de Sales curriculum while still maintaining its authenticity by supporting
academic
excellence,
moral responsibility, and ethical formation. Teachers integrated their own devices into the 2014-2015 curriculum,
and
students
offered input through a pilot program and focus groups. Student instruction and support will focus on ethical, responsible and

TECHNOLOGY reasonable use of technology. Students will attend technology orientations, and throughout the year students and faculty will receive training and development. In addition, an increased technology staff and media center with help desk will be available. All teachers are trained to use Lanschool software, which provides management and instructional tools. Teachers can control every device in the classroom, restrict websites and view all screens at once. To make classes more interactive, sharing screens, interactive voting/surveying, file collection and sharing, chat capabilities, and testing are possible. Incoming families are required to buy their own device based on the school’s criteria. However, there are no technology fees in addition to tuition. Students will have full access to Microsoft Office Suite and Office 365 online at no charge.

FINE ARTS Mount de Sales Academy’s FINE ARTS courses offer instruction in visual art, theatre, dance, choral music, instrumental music and integrated technology. The fine arts faculty brings realworld experience and passion to their classes. They encourage their students to identify and refine their talents, whether a girl is trying something for the first time or has prior experience.
MUSIC Each year the musical ensembles perform at Christmas and spring concerts on campus as well as travel out of state for adjudication. In the 2014-2015 school year, MDSA’s music students also: •

THEATRE This program includes classes and Drama Club. The theatre curriculum provides both performance and technical instruction, and students perform at the Fine Arts Assembly and at a performance of One Acts. Each year Mount de Sales produces a spring musical, and all students are encouraged to audition or participate in stage crew. The Drama Club participates in The Cappies, a student critic program. Members are required to attend and review at least four shows from 20 area high schools, and Mount de Sales’ musical production is included. Performers are eligible to attend, perform at, and receive awards at the Cappies annual gala night.
VISUAL ARTS Every visual arts student begins her studies by taking Line and Color to learn the four components of art education: production, criticism, history and aesthetics. Students can continue their studies to build an impressive portfolio, and senior art students display their work at the Senior Art Show each spring. Throughout the year the Fine Arts Department rotates displays of visual artwork in our newly renovated Gallery Hallway. Mount de Sales Academy graduates attend some of the nation’s most outstanding art institutions such as Rhode Island School of Design, Pratt University, Maryland Institute College of Art, Savannah College of Art and Design, and Drexel University.

SERVICE
Charity is the GREATEST OF ALL VIRTUES, and we encourage every member of the Mount de Sales Academy community to give of herself in order to draw closer to the heart of Christ. While all students are required to earn service hours in their religion classes, Sailors far exceed their quotas. The Campus Ministry Office gives students the opportunity to serve others inside the MDSA community, the surrounding region, and beyond our borders through a variety of service projects. Our students serve populations including the homeless, the elderly, the unborn, the poor, members of the U.S. military and those with disabilities. •

HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT TEST (HSPT) | All eighth-grade applicants are required to take the HSPT. Mount de Sales will administer the test on SATURDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2015. $40 fee. ADMISSIONS POLICY Mount de Sales Academy does not discriminate on the basis of race, color or national and ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policy, athletic or other school administered programs. All acceptances are conditional upon the successful completion of eighth grade. As a condition of acceptance, students may be required to attend and satisfactorily complete remedial summer math and / or reading programs prior to admission.
