GOLF TEAM WINS CHAMPIONSHIP! The Mount de Sales Academy golf team secured the IAAM B Conference Championship on April 29 at the Fox Hollow Golf Course in Timonium, MD. The varsity team, comprised of 12 girls, sent four students to compete in the championship. In order of play, the four girls who participated in the finals were CASSIE GEORGE ‘15, KELLY WRIGHT ‘15, REBECCA MACDONALD ‘16, and HANNAH ANDREWS ‘17. The Sailors finished the first day of competition tied for first place with Garrison Forest and secured their place as champions on day two. MDSA previously won the IAAM B Conference Championship in 2009, just one year after the golf program’s inception. KATHY DUKEHART BENZING ’60, head coach and founder of the MDSA golf program, watched her team place second in 2010 and 2011. This championship win is especially significant because Coach Benzing retired this year after seven years of service to the golf team. Congratulations to all the team members and coaches for their hard work this season!

THE UNSUNG HEROES OF

MOUNT DE SALES ACADEMY

T

he next time that you visit campus, look for signs of our unsung heroes: members of the MOUNT

DE SALES ACADEMY PARENTS’ CLUB. If you see people directing traffic, they are from the Parents’ Club. The campus is beautified for Open House and graduation by the Parents’ Club. Special traditions at MDSA, like the Mother-Daughter Tea, Father-Daughter Cotillion, and the annual Golf Tournament are, again, work of the Parents’ Club. These examples are only snapshots of all that they do. The Parents’ Club consists of parent volunteers who are supporting their daughters through serving MDSA with their time and talents. Their cumulative giving since the formation of the Parents’ Club qualifies them as a top donor to Mount de Sales Academy, and that doesn’t include what they save the school with their labor and service. What makes MDSA special is more than the smiling faces of our students; it’s also exemplified by the parents, current and past, of the Parents’ Club. Thank you, Parents’ Club, for exemplifying the spirit of Mount de Sales Academy and serving as examples to your daughters that service is important, even beyond the time that earns service hours. For information on how you can get involved with the Parents’ Club, visit mountdesales.org/parents-club or contact President Rick Siebert P’17 at 443.789.0094 or ricksiebert@comcast.net.

“EXEMPLIFYING THE SPIRIT OF MOUNT DE SALES ACADEMY” We are truly grateful to the Parents’ Club for all their hard work throughout the years. Thank you for coordinating the 16th annual Golf Tournament (photos above) which was held at the beautiful Rolling Road Golf Club in Catonsville on Monday, April 27, 2015. 4

STATE-OF-THE-SCHOOL ADDRESS DELIVERED AT MOUNT DE SALES ACADEMY Mount de Sales Academy hosted the State-of-the-School event on May 5, 2015. About 60 attendees participated in person, and more than 100 registered for the webinar. This gathering was an opportunity for parents and members of the MDSA community to receive an update on the progress of the strategic plan. Information was presented on Admissions/Marketing, Development, Facilities, and Technology and Academics. It was important to the Board of Trustees that the meeting provide a forum for questions and answers. The overwhelming response was extremely positive. In particular, webinar attendees praised the option of accessing the presentation from anywhere. SPOTLIGHT ON TECHNOLOGY END OF YEAR REVIEW | BY LINDSEY MURPHY, EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY DIRECTOR & MATH TEACHER

As our technology pilot year comes to a close, teachers and students are gearing up for a one-to-one student-to-device ratio when we return for the 2015-2016 school year. To continue to support teachers and students in technology use, Mount de Sales will be adding three new technology positions. While continuing to teach math, I will take on a new position as Educational Technology Director. My responsibilities will include overseeing the faculty’s educational technology needs and directly supporting them as they incorporate technology into their curriculum. Science teacher MRS. MURPHY

VALERIE FUECKER ‘03 will assume the new role of Educational Technology Assistant, in which she will be responsible for overseeing student technology training and directly supporting students as they begin using their devices in the classroom. Both Ms. Fuecker and I will work together to continually evaluate the program and meet the training and development needs of the students and faculty. Additional technology support will be provided by a new Help Desk Technician who will provide technical assistance to faculty, staff, and students as needed. Together, the Educational Technology Director, Educational Technology Assistant, and Help Desk Technician will provide individualized assistance, training, and support to students, faculty, and staff as Mount de Sales ventures into an exciting new BRING YOUR

This spring, MS. KRASTEL’S ‘02 ECONOMICS AND STATISTICS CLASS participated in a critical thinking activity similar to the show “Shark Tank.” The students developed marketing strategies including how to adjust their company for a good and bad economy, determined how they would generate income, identified their competitors, and forecasted where they see their company in five to 10 years. Each group presented their business plan and sought to convince and sell their ideas to their classmates. Students voted on which business they thought was the best idea. 9

AND THIS YEAR’S CAPPIES NOMINEES ARE… This year, Mount de Sales Academy and Mount Saint Joseph’s production of Mary Poppins was included in the Baltimore Critics and Awards Program, better known as the Cappies, for the first time. The Cappies are the high school equivalent of the Tony Awards; trained student critics attend and review shows performed by local schools. At the end of the year, they vote on awards that are presented at the annual Cappies Gala. This year the gala was held at Towson University’s SECU Arena, and our talented cast, along with casts from 20 other schools, performed a song from the show for a crowd of over 1,000. Mary Poppins nominees included MARY MORENCY '15 for lead actress, EMMA GREENE '15 for costumes, NICOLE WILHELM '15 for special effects, as well as Mount Saint Joseph High School students Ryan Slattery (lead actor, Bert) and Nick Whitaker (dancer, Neleus). TEACHER OF THE

YEAR

MR. JEFF HOSIER is a dedicated, unassuming teacher and an outstanding role model for Mount de Sales girls. He sees the potential in all of his students and encourages them to learn and grow as musicians and as individuals. In addition to teaching both vocal and instrumental music, Mr. Hosier directs the music and conducts the pit band for our drama productions, directs liturgical music for multiple Masses, and organizes trips to music competitions and evaluations. Mr. Hosier is also flexible enough to have his students perform on a minute’s notice. Mr. Hosier has made a profound impact on the many students he has taught and the entire Mount de Sales community. It has often been said that the Concert Choir’s communion meditations invoke thoughts of angels singing in heaven. One of Mr. Hosier’s special gifts is his ability to foster compassion through service outreach with his students, helping them recognize the importance of sharing their time and talent. Years from now, students may vaguely recall the tune they played, but they will certainly remember the life lessons they learned from this humble and talented music teacher. The music he inspired will linger in our minds and hearts for years to come.

GRADUATION SPEECH EXCERPTS

VALEDICTORIAN “We should have confidence in ourselves and in our future, for we are women, graduates, and daughters of God. We will become compassionate mothers to our future children and those around us, for this school has given us a family through which we have strengthened our love for others. Already, after four years in an encouraging environment, we are natural leaders and abundant in confidence. We can be corporate pioneers in whatever field we desire because Mount de Sales has provided us with the support and drive to achieve our goals, and the strong education that we have been given here has formed us into the brightest of thinkers. Finally, as we have grown in both knowledge of Catholicism and intensity of faith, we will set the

world ablaze with the love of God.”

SALUTATORIAN “After four years of hard work and times both joyous and stressful, we now have to say goodbye to an excellent and admirable group of friends. We tie-dyed our shirts, writing each other notes of love and goodbye, we pulled through and won the Spirit Cup, we went to our last prom together, and so on. Yet with all of these crowning glories I can hardly believe it’s time for us to part. Ladies, we’ve carried each other through meltdowns and triumphs, we’ve overcome obstacles, and, even when we’ve failed to pull through in time, those downfalls have taught us to be strong together. Let that strength carry us as we walk whatever path God has shown us for our futures, and always remember: we’re all sisters deep at heart, united in blue, and nothing can ever

MOUNT DE SALES GIRL At Mount de Sales, we are a Eucharistic people. We begin each day anew, giving our prayers, works, joys, and sufferings to Jesus through Mary. At the end of the school day we present the Lord our contrite hearts for the sins we’ve committed, promising to return our hearts fully to Him. The relationship we develop with God here is entirely up to us. In every classroom, a crucifix hangs on the wall as a memory of what Christ has done for us. His sacrifice is a constant reminder of the kind of love we’re called to show others. We see the Lord’s presence and deeply desire to receive Him in the holy sacrament. We are so blessed to have had the opportunity to praise him in adoration, and to welcome Him into our hearts in the Eucharist each first Friday. Truly,

approximately $1,000 for Disabled Sports USA. Grace reflects, “I knew I wanted to be a part of this organization because of the meaning behind it.” Not only did Grace complete this year’s 5K with an impressive time of 23 minutes and 25 seconds, making her the overall female winner of the race, but she was instrumental in organizing the event by securing donations from local businesses. By participating in club events like Operation Welcome Home, laying wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery, and the Sailors for Soldiers 5K, Grace thanks those who have served in a rewarding way. “I love that Mount de Sales has a club solely dedicated to our troops because we only focus on them and don’t lose sight of our goals.” Grace and the Support the Troops Club owe much of their success to their club sponsor, Mrs. Eileen Clements. The Fine Arts Department Chair has a personal connection to the military. “Her personal stories and testimonies changed my perspective and moved me in way I can’t even describe,” says Grace. Grace will attend Millersville University in the fall and hopes to join campus ministry and service organizations on campus. She is confident the Support the Troops Club will continue to grow and inspire additional Sailors to give back to their community. 17

SAILOR ATHLETE MAKES HER OWN JOURNEY TO HER

GOAL & GOLD! Q: Can you speak to your involvement in MDSA Athletics? A: Sports have always been a center point in my life, and having the opportunity to play on such competitive teams throughout my time at MDSA really enhanced my high school experience.

AMANDA DONOVAN ’15 shares how Mount de Sales Academy

Field Hockey Coach Mary Gentner said, “SPORTS ARE LIKE LIFE, GIRLS. DON’T

GO THROUGH THE MIDDLE WHERE EVERYONE ELSE IS, BUT TAKE IT WIDE ON YOUR OWN JOURNEY WHERE YOU HAVE A CLEAR PATH TO YOUR GOAL.” I’ve really taken this quote (my senior quote) to heart and applied it to so many aspects of my life.

Q: This year you have been pursuing the prestigious Gold Girl Scout Award. Tell us about

her formation.

the award as well as the program you’ve implemented with middle-school girls.

A: The Girl Scout Gold Award is an independent project that addresses an issue in the community. After attending several summer camps and engaging in the computer science community, I learned there is a huge gender gap in the field. For my project, I wanted to create an after-school event for middle-school girls to learn and receive hands-on experience with computer science and technology. The purpose is to give girls confidence from a young age to pursue a generally male-dominated career field. I want to empower girls to break the stereotypes.

Q: What prompted this initiative? A: Technology has always been a love for me, and I think it’s the reason I became so attached to this idea for my project. MDSA also helped spark an interest, mostly because we learn every day in an all-girl community and don’t really see the stereotypes of certain fields of study. I also love that right on our website, the words “the feminine genius” scroll across the screen; it’s a great reminder that we are capable of great things.

Q: How would you describe your growth as a person over the last four years?

What from

your MDSA experience played a part in your development?

A: Now I’m more ambitious. I think my teachers really helped me along the way, especially Mrs. Schorr P’10 ’15. She pushed me to better myself, gave me confidence, and taught me life skills. I can’t express how grateful I am to have such a special bond with her. 20

E

ach year the Alumnae Relations Department hosts a special 50th reunion for the class celebrating its golden graduation anniversary. The honored guests attend a reception in the Bird Room as well as the commencement ceremony in the Music Hall.

This year, several classmates from 1965 gathered together at Mount de Sales for their reunion. The women reflected on their years together as students, and also discovered just how connected they stayed even after graduation. A few of them attended the same church, and some classmates were even married by the same priest! The Pomp and Circumstance processional rang forth from the piano when the graduates walked through the windows in the Music Hall, just as it did in 1965. However, the women laughed that 50 years ago their class was so small that the song only played once before they all took their seats on stage. It was a lovely ceremony and there wasn’t a dry eye among the alumnae when they joined in singing the alma mater with the Class of 2015. Thank you to all of the women from the Class of 1965 who were able to attend their 50th reunion. We are excited to welcome the Class of 1966 home in 2016!

PLANNING PROVIDES FOR THE FUTURE FINE ARTS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP & CURRICULUM SUPPORT As CECILIA “CELIA” GAVIN LUDWIG ’65 traveled through South Africa, she recalled her approximately four-mile roundtrip commute to Mount de Sales Academy. Even on the coldest and wettest days, her experience at MDSA was worth the effort. That is why Celia and her husband, Stephen, have included MDSA in their wills. Coinciding with her 50th reunion from MDSA, Celia reached out to Mount de Sales to create an estate gift to benefit her alma mater. Due to her travels Celia could not join her classmates as an honored guest at graduation, but she shared why she chose to make her gift to MDSA and the impact the school had on her life. Upon entering MDSA, Celia followed in the footsteps of four aunts (NELL GAVIN, ELIZABETH LEE GETZ ’42, ELIZABETH KRUGER ’49, and JOAN KRUGER POHL ’50) who attended MDSA. Celia’s family struggled financially, and on many occasions there was little left after paying tuition. Celia thrived on the faith life at MDSA and the love of the Visitation Nuns. Celia recalls, “The beautiful chapel gave Mount de Sales an aura of calmness, peacefulness, and simplicity.” Celia maintained contact with some of the Visitation Nuns for years. She fondly remembers Sister Ignatius, Sister Mary Louise, and Sister Jane Frances. Since graduating from MDSA and then University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), Celia had a career in finance, which included positions with the Federal Reserve Bank

and St. Joseph Medical Center Credit Union. Now Celia enjoys a second career as an accomplished artist. Celia’s love for the arts coupled with her love of MDSA motivated her gift to support both passions. After experiencing the loss of family and friends, sometimes unexpectedly, Celia and Stephen gave prayerful consideration to the distribution of their estate. Celia created the trust to benefit MDSA because she wanted her gift to benefit many people. Additionally, Celia recognized the benefits of a trust. She explains, “We understood that by setting up a trust, certain taxes are saved and thus go directly to the recipients. By setting up a revocable trust, you can still use your funds if necessary.” Celia has accomplished and traveled a great deal since graduation, but her heart remains at MDSA, which for her was a place of refuge as well as learning. Celia and Stephen’s planned gift will create an endowed arts scholarship and support the art curriculum at MDSA. We are grateful to Celia for making a legacy gift to her alma mater that will enable future MDSA students to pursue their passion for the arts. You can check out Celia’s artwork on her website, cecilia-ludwig-art.com.
