FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Friends of Mount de Sales Academy, “Be who you are, and be that perfectly well.” - St. Francis de Sales These words of St. Francis de Sales, our patron, are as true today as they were when he shared this thought with a friend in the seventeenth century. For 162 years, Mount de Sales has counseled young women with similar words, forming them in the path of the discovery of God and self, and then encouraging them to pursue both as they forge out into the world. As we watch the Class of 2014 graduate and claim their next step, we know their foundation at Mount de Sales will serve them as they pursue God’s path for them, perfectly well. You will see from the articles in this issue that they have much about which to be excited. In the same way, a school must constantly stay true to its mission, be who it is, and be that perfectly well. A strategic plan is designed to guide the process of growth with a faithful eye to the mission. Sometimes in this process, fun elements of your past are discovered that give you greater insight into the future. Last spring, a facilities subcommittee worked to create a program to guide ongoing interior finishes of the 1852 building that would be faithful to our heritage. In that spirit, this committee recommended the replacement of the library hall/art gallery carpeting with a wood floor. In the process of tearing out the subfloor, we discovered the original wood floor is intact and beautiful. We will be able to restore that same wood INTERACTIVE PRINT

INTEGRATION
PROGRAM
(TIP)
Mount de Sales embraces its philosophy that “traditional disciplines are enhanced by those practices which are most effective in modern methods of teaching.” This compels us to revisit teaching techniques to ensure the utilization of up-to-date, suitable resources and learning platforms. In today’s educational climate, these innovations are largely technology driven and can enhance our curriculum while still maintaining its authenticity. The new Technology Integration Program (TIP) is developed to adhere to Mount de Sales’ mission and philosophy by supporting academic excellence, moral responsibility, and ethical formation. The Project Management Team is pleased to share the following TIP updates: •
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (summer 2014): Faculty received tablets along with pertinent training and worked independently to complete the Microsoft I.T. Academy.

INFRASTRUCTURE: •
Classrooms will be equipped with docking stations for teacher Surface Pro tablets; touchscreen monitors; wireless projectors; and a rotating tablet cart the student classroom use.

Network connection and performance will be upgraded and wireless coverage will expand to campus-wide.
JUNIOR AND SENIOR ORIENTATIONS (August 2014): Students received instruction, guidance, and an introduction to acceptable usage and moral responsibility regarding technology.

SeaPerch:
an Innovative Underwater
ROBOTICS PROGRAM by Ms. Claire Sargo, science department chair
“Sea perch” took on a whole new meaning for the Mount de Sales STEM students this

year. Instead of a fish, the term SeaPerch referred to the underwater robots the students

built and used in competition. In February, the STEM students began construction of

their SeaPerch ROV, or remotely operated vehicle. The device operates under the water’s surface and is maneuvered by a student using the control box. The SeaPerch curriculum incorporates engineering design, buoyancy, electrical circuits, hydrodynamics, and

physics into a hands-on challenge for students. In order to build a successful device, students worked in teams to construct the robot frame, build the control box and circuit board, assemble the motors, and connect the control box to the device itself.

Annapolis, Maryland. On April 5, two Mount de Sales teams competed with more than 100 middle school and high school teams. Scoring was based on pool competition and

each team’s knowledge of the robot design, scientific concepts, and teamwork. Both teams performed well and Team Edgar advanced to the SeaPerch National Challenge at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The team had a great experience in Hattiesburg and we look forward to next year’s SeaPerch competition.

Have you ever found words to be wholly inadequate when wishing to express real depth of feelings? Each time I have attempted to write this letter, words would not come. My struggle is not due to a lack of material; rather, my heart is so full of emotion and thanksgiving, trying to compress my thoughts into a brief note has become a daunting exercise. If I typed “thank you” one million times, it would fall painfully short of the debt of gratitude I owe to Fr. Michael J. Roach, the Dominican Sisters, current and past board members, administrators, teachers, staff, students, parents, alumnae, benefactors and friends! Each one has been a true blessing to Mount de Sales Academy and a treasured gift to me.
It has been an extraordinary honor to serve as the president of our board for the past four years. What a thrill to watch dreams become realities! Kudos and adulations to each one of you who made it happen!
As I bid all of you farewell, it gives me great comfort to transfer the reins to the steady hands of our new president, Joseph N. Geier P’08 ‘12 ‘17. Joe served as vice president during my term and I know him to be a man of integrity and strength. Mount de Sales is truly blessed to have a board of hardworking, dedicated members whose combined talents and gifts make great things happen!

Who WaNts to Be a MathematiciaN?
On April 25, the American Mathematical Society (AMS) held a Who Wants to Be a Mathematician contest at the 2014 USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C. In March, the Mount de Sales math department administered the qualifying test and submitted the best score, by Veronica Balick ’16, to the AMS for consideration.
In early April, Mount de Sales received word that Veronica was one of eight students – and the only female – from Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina invited to participate. The contestants were competing for a variety of prizes, including a TI-Nspire calculator, books, computer software, and a top prize of $3,000. Seated on stage in front of about 150 people at the Washington Convention Center, they were given a time limit to buzz in answers to six challenging math questions from the areas of algebra, trigonometry, geometry, history of mathematics, combinatorics, probability, and logic.

“The arts are thriving at Mount de Sales Academy!” This assertion from Eileen Clements, Fine Arts department chair, could not be more correct! The 2013-2014 school year was full of MDSA student accomplishments in visual arts, music, and dance. Three young ladies in particular achieved outstanding recognition. In January SYDNEY HUNTER ’15 won first place in the 41st annual March for Life student poster contest. Her elegant artwork underscored the adoption-themed contest, and she chose to donate the award to Pregnancy Center West. Our second distinguished artist is KARINA SHAFFREY ’15, who won the Little Sisters of the Poor inaugural Nun Run logo competition. Her unique design earned her a cash prize and a free entry to the 5K race in September 2014. The logo is featured on all Nun Run promotional materials.

CHRISTINA SMITH ’14 displayed her singing talents in February during student auditions for the Maryland/District of Columbia District Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. In this prestigious competition Christina took first place in her category and was invited to participate in the Mid-Atlantic Regional student auditions.

Farewell to Sister Philip Joseph: a pioneer, visionary, and role model of faith Sister Philip Joseph Davis, O.P., was one of three sisters who arrived in 1985 to administer Mount de Sales Academy, which for the preceding five years had been led by a lay administration after the departure of the Visitation Sisters. This was the start of the “Dominican Renaissance,” a term coined by Father Michael Roach, MDSA trustee and pastor of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Manchester. For 25 years, Sister Philip Joseph worked side by side with her Dominican Sisters for growth of enrollment, elevated academic rigor, and improvements to the campus of Mount de Sales Academy.

ON CAMPUS Together, the Dominican Sisters saw beyond leaking roofs, peeling paint, and an unaccredited school to the possibility of all-around excellence for Mount de Sales Academy. Fueled by her faith, Sister Philip Joseph worked tirelessly to raise awareness as well as money. She served as an ambassador not only for Mount de Sales but also for Catholic education and vocations in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Members of the Mount de Sales family gathered on June 5 to say thank you, farewell, and best wishes to Sister Philip Joseph as she embarks on her new assignment to create a perpetual adoration chapel at Aquinas College in Nashville, Tennessee. Good-byes are always hard but we take comfort that the entire Mount de Sales community benefitted from Sister Philip Joseph living the Dominican motto “to contemplate and to give to others the fruits of our contemplation.”

In every student’s life there is a teacher who stands out. Whether its personality, teaching style, or dedication to the subject, these qualities leave a lasting impression. Mrs. Anne Printz possesses all these traits and because of this, has been named the Catonsville Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year. The award can be attributed to her students; when she was nominated, many of them wrote testimonials of experiences in her classroom. Among all the letters of students’ personal stories regarding Mrs. Printz, there was a common theme of respect and gratitude. Danielle Andrews ’15 shared, “I’ve never had a class quite like Mrs. Printz’s Geography and Global Issues class. She always opens the floor to discussion, which keeps the class engaged and eager to give answers.” Kathleen Malcotti ‘14 noted, “I have learned more with Mrs. Printz than I ever thought I could. She gives me confidence, not only in geography, but also in everyday life.” We asked the Teacher of the Year about her teaching background and her favorite aspects of her job: WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING A TEACHER? For me, it’s seeing my students grow into confident young adults, taking the knowledge and values of Mount de Sales with them as they move on to college and beyond. I find myself most at home in a classroom, and the students are the best part of my job. I truly look forward to seeing them every day! WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT OF THIS YEAR? During Senior Retreat in
November, the Class of 2014 stood up and sang their Twisted Tunes songs from freshman, sophomore and junior year. They were a fantastic class that demonstrated sisterhood and really cared for one another. HAVE ANY PROFESSORS OR TEACHERS INSPIRED YOU? HOW? My undergraduate
experience at Fordham University shaped me into the person I am today and gave me the tools needed to be an effective educator. The Jesuits at Fordham have a philosophy of "cura personalis,” or educating the whole person, that I incorporate into my own teaching style. Young people today not only need knowledge to go out into the world, but also moral and 18
ON CAMPUS spiritual formation to guide them in crucial professional and life choices. I am privileged to help oversee this process with my own students. HOW DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO TEACH GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY?
Changing a bit to my personal philosophy of education – whether I am teaching government, history, or psychology, my central goal remains the same: As an educator, I aim to aid in the transformation of my students into critical readers, clear writers, and analytical thinkers, while instilling the values needed for a faithful life. For the past 31 years, Mount de Sales Academy has been blessed by the faith-filled presence of Mrs. Dorothy “Dottie” Watkins. Filling many roles during her time at MDSA, from school secretary, to guidance secretary, to Sacred Heart testing coordinator, Dottie has touched countless lives. Having witnessed how Mount de Sales has grown and thrived, including the arrival of the Dominican Sisters and many changes to the building and grounds, Dottie could always be called upon for a Mount de Sales history lesson. Dottie saw her own daughter, Patricia, graduate from Mount de Sales in 1988. Through it all, her love of the school, students, faculty and staff were unmistakable. Her dedication, gentle spirit and humility were gifts to Mount de Sales and to every life she has touched. Most of all, Dottie will be remembered for her unwavering faith and love of the Catholic Church and as a true witness to Christ. She will be fondly remembered as someone who lived the Gospels not just in word, but in action. Dottie is looking forward to spending time with her husband, Ron, her children David and Patricia, and her six grandchildren. On June 4, 1964, 38 Mount de Sales graduates walked through the windows of the Music Hall. Fifty years later, 16 of those women sat in the audience as honored guests when another generation of Sailors

MELISA DUNCAN CORYELL ‘96 and husband Brian are thrilled to announce the birth of their son, Austin Brian Coryell, on November 21, 2013. He weighed 8 pounds 3 ounces and measured 20.75 inches.
DANA CENTINEO SPARENBERG ’97 married Kevin Sparenberg (MSJ Class of ’96) on April 27, 2014. The couple will be relocating to Austin, Texas, where Kevin will be working as a product manager for Solarwinds.
’00s LEIGH-ANNE HENRY KROMETIS ’98 was named the Virginia Tech College of Engineering’s Outstanding Assistant Professor for 2014. Dr. Krometis is a professor in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering, where she teaches courses in Nonpoint Source Pollution Assessment and Control, Emerging Waterborne Contaminants, and Engineering Exploration. Her research focuses on the provision of safe drinking water and appropriate sanitation in impoverished communities in the Appalachian Coalfields. Her work is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, United States Department of Agriculture, and the Appalachian Research Institute for Environmental Science. LeighAnne, husband Justin (faculty in Advanced Research Computing), and son Linus (6) are active members of St. Mary’s Parish in Blacksburg, Virginia. MEGAN MICHELLE ARMSTRONG ‘02 and Kyle William Askine were married on March 15, 2014 in Baltimore. The sister of the bride, KRISTINE ARMSTRONG MOORE ‘04, served as the matron of honor while CHRISTINE PEREZ ‘02 was also a bridesmaid. The couple spent their honeymoon in Turkey, and is currently residing in Laurel, Maryland.
RACHEL HARKINS ’04 married Anthony Ullmann on April 25, 2014 at St. Ignatius Church in Hickory, Maryland. Rachel served as religion teacher and campus minister at Mount de Sales from 2007-2011. She now works at the Department of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Rachel and Anthony (a graduate from Loyola Blakefield Middle School and John Carroll High School) are so grateful for their own Catholic education that they gave a donation towards the Tuition Assistance Fund for the Archdiocese as a gift in honor of their wedding guests. ANNA BINETTE O’DAY ’05 and husband Garrett welcomed their son, Desmond James O’Day, into the world right on his due date, April 22, 2014! He weighed 6 pounds and 5 ounces.
’10s In May 2014, ANNA DANZ ‘08 received a master’s degree in Architectural History from the University of Virginia, along with a certificate in Historic Preservation. After graduation, Anna began working for the Maryland Film Festival as the Parkway Campaign Manager. The campaign will focus on the preservation and revitalization of the historic Parkway Theater in Baltimore’s Station North Arts and Entertainment District. KATIE MARTEL ‘08 married Justin Yost on December 14, 2013 at Saint Alphonsus Catholic Church in Baltimore City. Her Maid of Honor was MEGAN MARTEL ‘15 and her Matron of Honor was SARAH MARTEL SLOSSON ‘02. ELIZABETH MARTEL KOWALEWSKI ‘00 was also a bridesmaid.
EMILY AJLUNI ’10 graduated summa cum laude from the University of Maryland, College Park, in May with a B.A. in Behavior and Community Health. Emily will be pursuing a master’s degree in psychology at Nova Southeastern University, Florida, with the goal of obtaining a Ph.D. in five years. KAITLYN BOLESTA ’12, CORINNE COHAGAN ’11, SARAH HUBER ’12, and KAYLA SPAAR ’12 spent the spring semester of college in Gaming, Austria. The four students took advantage of Franciscan University’s study abroad program and lived in a 14th-century Carthusian monastery for four months. With extended weekends, they had the opportunity to travel throughout different parts of Europe. They were all able to make it to Rome for the canonizations of Pope Saint John Paul II and Pope Saint John XXIII!
On May 19, 2014, MARIA SURDOKAS ’07 graduated magna cum laude from the University of Baltimore School of Law. She will be spending the rest of her summer studying to take the Maryland bar exam.

MDSA ALUMNA ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF SCIENCE
E
rica Brown Bullwinkle ’08 is working on her master’s in biology at American University, where she is conducting research for her thesis, taking graduate-
level classes, and teaching undergraduate labs. Currently, Erica works in Dr. Katie DeCicco-Skinner’s lab at American University. As the lead researcher for the multiple myeloma project, she investigates the “microenvironment” for cancer. Her team researches the cell-to-cell signaling within bone marrow that makes cancer more aggressive once it has been established. They believe signals are released within the bone marrow that create a more favorable environment for the cancer. After intensive research, Erica has seen positive data to support that hypothesis. Eventually, they hope to uncover information that proves the fat cells are related to enhancing cancer growth so a potential target for treatment may arise. Erica says the research conducted stresses the importance of staying fit and healthy, as obesity is linked to many chronic diseases and systemic inflammation. She is enjoying every minute in the lab and is excited to be earning her master’s degree.
