From the Principal Dear Friends of Mount de Sales Academy, On April 29, Archbishop Lori blessed the new turf field on our Mount de Sales campus. Though a drizzly day, the energy level in the gym was alive as the students gave Archbishop Lori and Cal Ripken, Jr. a warm welcome. The blessings continued as three local network affiliates covered the story and pictures of the Archbishop blessing the field under bright Mount de Sales umbrellas graced the front of The Baltimore Sun and several other newspapers. This great event was just one of the many blessings of the 2012-2013 school year. The new field afforded the softball team a home field for the first time. They had a great season which ended in bringing home a league championship. The story of the championship game was one of those “once in a lifetime” experiences, with our team coming from behind, 0-5 in the third inning to win the game 7-6. The story of the game and Coach Waskiewicz’s Coach of the Year Award is found inside this issue. Another blessing highlighted in this issue is the story of our new science labs and curriculum growth in recent years. With the help of The Theresa F. Truschel Foundation, our parents, and our alumnae, we have been able to create a new life science lab and renovate the chemistry lab. These spaces will become home to an already growing science curriculum. The academic opportunities at Mount de Sales enabled 73% of the Class of 2013 to graduate with possible college credit, and two-thirds of the class were offered merit scholarships. Yet, our greatest blessing is always walking with our students as they grow in so many ways. From the Archbishop’s first visit to Mount de Sales in January for Catholic Schools Week to student retreat and service trips in June and July, the heart of the Mount de Sales mission is very alive. Valedictorian - Meghan Connors Brown Mount de Sales Academy has formed our minds, bodies, and souls, and enabled us to approach the world with intelligence, courage, and hope. Not only are we prepared to thrive academically in college, but we are also ready to choose the lives we want to lead. Moreover, the knowledge we have gained is a gift that we must develop; we are obliged to use this gift rather than squander it. As John F. Kennedy famously declared, “To those whom much is given, much is expected.”
Salutatorian - Mary Elizabeth Connolly Four years ago, we gathered together for the first time at freshman orientation. In front of the columns, we took our first picture together, most of us squinting our eyes to the glaring sun. Timid at first, we quickly established a bond between us, which flowed naturally from the overwhelming spirit of community and love at Mount de Sales. And four years later, after sharing in the joys and struggles to which only a Mount de Sales girl can relate, that bond is strengthened immeasurably. It is a bond of not only friendship but sisterhood.

New Science Lab for Mount de Sales by Ms. Claire Sargo, Science department chair The summer of 2013 brought exciting changes to the science department at Mount de Sales Academy. The brand new biology lab has been installed. This lab allows students to have a proper space to engage in many exciting lab experiences for all of the science classes. The new lab is larger than the previous one and creates a more streamlined lab experience for students. Also, the second floor A-side bathrooms have been remodeled and a science prep room was added for the science teachers. As more focus is placed on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) in the classroom, this lab will allow our students to continue to take part in the hands-on process of learning science. In addition to the new facilities, the science

She has always remained strong and smiling.” 10

The arts at Mount de Sales Academy are flourishing! Enrollment has increased in all of our art classes for next year and over two-thirds of the student body took fine arts electives in 2012 – 2013.
For art
specifically, it has been a good year: AP Art History was offered for the first time; five 2013 graduates plan to major in some form of art; and an online art gallery was established by Ms. Jessica Oros ’08, former faculty member, to showcase the students’ artwork. Our philosophy at MDSA is that everyone can benefit from the arts. The arts help us to express ourselves and to be able to envision and dream. Most of all, they challenge us to think in new ways. In the Art Room we like to establish that anything is possible and that improvement is a tangible, real thing, evidenced when we look back at summer assignments to the latest project completed. The growth is always apparent. We like to think that we have established a place where all skill levels can succeed. It is rewarding to watch students’ stress levels slip away as they lose themselves in the act of creating. The Art Room has a magic all of its own!

St. John of the Cross is credited with saying, “Where there is no love, put love and you will draw out love.” This was the theme of the second annual BOOM mission week. Recognizing the need to be filled with Christ’s mercy and grace in order to minister, each day began with Mass at OLPH. Throughout the week, there were opportunities for confession. Following morning Mass, students went to different sites to serve the local community both face to face and behind the scenes. When you do everything for Christ, the simplest act of love can be redemptive. The teens directly encountered the people they served at places such as Our Daily Bread in Baltimore, St. Martin’s Home in Catonsville, Shangri-La Assisted Living in Ellicott City, My Brother’s Keeper in Baltimore and at the OLPH vacation Bible school. A highlight from these trips was serving ice cream to Cardinal William H. Keeler at St. Martin’s Home.
Throughout the week the work was often humbling: disinfecting playroom toys, pulling weeds, mulching and sorting household items and clothes. Students served the poor and learned how to be advocates for social justice. Every day the students made 125 bagged lunches for the Westside Emergency Men’s Shelter in Baltimore. It amazed them that lack of respect for the human person is happening in their own backyard. At Our Daily Bread, students learned about poverty and served meals. Many students discussed how the recipients did not have a choice in their meal but were so appreciative for the food they were given. Every day the students returned from their sites to share what each group experienced, listen to speakers and conclude with prayer in the chapel. On Friday night they prayed with their chaperones and joined OLPH’s monthly parish-wide holy hour. The mission might have ended with a holy hour, but the call to a life of mission just began for many of these teens. Collectively, our BOOM missionaries served more than 2,700 hot lunches; prepared more than 625 bagged lunches; spent more than 14 hours with the elderly; cleaned up Mount de Sales Academy, Mount Saint Joseph and OLPH’s church; taught elementary school children at vacation Bible school; supported Maryland Therapeutic Riding, The Samaritan Women, the Shrine of St. Anthony, Ronald McDonald House and HOPE For All; and helped the Sisters of Life prepare their new convent in Wheaton, Maryland. BOOM missionaries, thank you for all that you have done to serve the community.

Self-confidence and resilience are key components to success in academics and in life. For students with learning disabilities (LDs), they are often in short supply. They learn early in life that they can give 110% and still come up short compared to the students who did their homework in the prior class period or studied for the test at lunch. Sadly, students with LDs often give up as soon as the assignment is handed out. What makes the difference for them? Like all students, those with learning disabilities build confidence through success. Students with learning disabilities gain resilience when they know the teachers understand and accept them and their unique learning style.
In an effort to better meet the needs of our students, the Sacred Heart Program is expanding. In addition to our Director and Learning Specialist, we are adding a Testing Coordinator to the team, who will handle all testing accommodations for our students. This year, Mount de Sales Academy launched the Sacred Heart Program, which is designed to meet the specialized needs of college-bound students with learning disabilities. Each student has a Support Plan that lists the accommodations that she needs to learn effectively in this challenging academic environment. In addition, many of the Sacred Heart students receive direct instruction to aid reading comprehension, writing skills, organization, and time management. In just one year, we are already seeing results. GPAs are going up. Girls are openly discussing how they learn in an effort to become better self-advocates. Most importantly to me, they are beginning to understand that God made them for a purpose. He doesn’t make mistakes. They are “wonderfully made.” This selfconfidence and the resilience that comes with it will be the key to their success well into the future.

Tennis Team Conference Champions At the conclusion of a remarkable undefeated season, the Mount de Sales tennis team won the IAAM B Conference Championship on October 19, 2012 under the direction of 2012 Head Coach Tracey Crawford and JV Coach Maria Procopio ‘08. “I would have to say that for my first season ever as a tennis coach, I was truly blessed. I had the opportunity to work with a great group of young women who were easy to coach and fun to be with. Once the season started and the girls began to work as a team supporting and encouraging each other, their confidence grew. They began to win matches and soon there was no stopping them; we finished the season with an undefeated record and took home the championship. I was proud to be a part of the 2012 tennis team. Sailor Swimmer Conquers the Chesapeake
On Campus Every year on the second Sunday in June, hundreds of wetsuit-clad swimmers crowd the beach at Sandy Point State Park and wait for the start of the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim. The 4.4-mile swim is only open to 600 swimmers and the race typically sells out in a matter of minutes. When she was nine years old, Allie Caulfield ‘14 entered her first open-water swim and swam side by side with her dad in the Bay Swim one-mile race. On June 9, 2013, it was her turn to attempt the grueling 4.4-mile race. Allie has been swimming competitively since she was six years old. It has taught her discipline and brought its share of challenges, such as six-day-aweek practices—many at 5:15 a.m. before school— for 11 and a half months a year. She has enjoyed success on the varsity MDSA swim team, including a recent MVP award, and she currently holds the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke MDSA school records. All of these things she was excited to do and accomplish, but the day of the 4.4-mile race brought about a different level of excitement. The start of the race was brutal, legs and arms flying everywhere. Though Allie considers herself more of a sprinter than a distance swimmer, she was able to keep a good pace.
Despite some
very strong currents, she kept a steady course and finished hard. She was proud to come in 85th with a time of 1:58:44. Allie is looking forward to her senior year at MDSA and hopes to swim in a strong Division I college program. She has always valued the support she gets from her family, school, teachers and coaches. "An incredible amount of both physical and mental stamina is required to conquer the Bay Swim. Allie is a true competitor to complete this impressive feat! She and the Class of 2014 swim team members are some of the most talented young ladies to come through the MDSA swimming program," said head coach Courtney Giulioni Gahagan '00. Allie

The Golden Class of 1963 is Welcomed Home Members of the Class of 1963 returned to Mount de Sales in celebration of their 50th reunion. After partaking in a pre-graduation reception, they took their seats as the honored guests of this year’s 161st commencement ceremony. What struck me about these ladies was their vibrance. Every place they walked sparked memories recounted with enthusiasm, including the many times they were threatened with excommunication for various infractions! Beyond the laughter and story-telling, this Golden Class was full of heart. They shed tears when the graduates sang an Irish blessing and smiled broadly as they joined in for the school song. Many remarked that the ceremony has maintained the beauty and magnitude it bore half a century ago. What a blessing it is to experience a Mount de Sales graduation!
