Dear Friends, For us, much of this summer was about traveling and the sights and feelings we experienced while being in a foreign environment. Ting visited Italy and London, Shanene stayed in a small village in Bavaria and Cassandra went to Italy and Croatia. Travelling allowed us to experience different aesthetics that we would normally not encounter in our hometowns, as well as being able to meet wonderful people and gather fond, faraway memories. In the summer issue, we travel together to a variety of locations. Matt Bower (pg 01) takes us to beautiful India, Dani Padgett (pg 27) visits Morocco, and Angeles Pena (pg 73) makes a trip to Mexico. We hope that the summer season included exploration, as well as a new-found appreciation for the places we already know. As you view the fantastic artwork in this issue, we hope you’ll feel the warmth and fondness for the world that we feel. Enjoy! I’ve spent a week trying to describe these photographs or at least come up with something interesting to say. I could have written a short bio with my hometown or given some abstract interpretation of my photographs. I also considered writing about my experience in India and how amazing it was, but does that really come as a surprise? Of course India, with its rich history and culture, would be amazing. Instead, I’d rather quote my favorite photographer. “The trouble is – whatever it is about pictures, photographs, it’s just about impossible to follow up with words. edge there, that’s him ripping into a mule deer.
Yeah, that deer has to be dead because coyotes can’t attack like that, or it’s a wolf.
That your idea of a wolf? Looks more like a coyote.
That deer’s flopping up like still alive.
It’s a big coyote if it is. We don’t got wolves here.
No, look at the tail. Too bushy for wolf.
Sure we do. All up the chain you got starvation, right up to the yotes. Could be a coyote. Seems wolfish to me. Biggest coyote on record around here was seventy-five pounds, five foot.... Red wolf is posible, too. They got reintroduced into the wild, and are about the size of a large coyote, since a red wolf is a grey wolf coyote hybrid. Wolf? That’s not like a single coyote to attack a deer....maybe a mix. Badass, man. That is either a really big coyote, or a wolf. I am leaning toward a wolf.

That’s a big goddamn yote! Deer’s alive! I worked on a ranch in Idaho with plenty mulies around, and I saw yotes every day about two maybe three times a day, and I never seen a mule deer take such protective actions, that’s disturbing to see. I personally use a Charles Daily .243 with a hundred gram bullet and I have it sighted in at seven hundred yards. Yards? Yes... yards. If I can see the yote I can kill it. Painful to watch, only because you see the underdog, and that she really can’t do enough to defend herself. I’m surprised at the deer really trying to fight off, that’s amazing. That is also sad, but then again, it's life in the wild.

What a bunch of scum-sucking, dirt-licking desert mongrels. I’ll kill any coyote I can. This is very typical of how animals die in the wild. The process can take three days or more before the animal is bitten to death.
Wolf. Coyotes run in packs. I shoot them all year round, not to mention I had eight wild ones living in my pole barn. Now they’re dead, haha. It’s a coyote not a wolf. Poor deer.
Don’t get me wrong, ‘cause I’m a hunter, but poor deer. Should you shoot the yote?
Poor beautiful deer, but that coyote’s nowhere near wolf-size, which you have obviously never seen.
I’ve killed over five hundred coyotes and one wolf. I assure you I wouldn’t put my wolf tag on that critter.
Actually, I’ve seen yotes bring down huge bucks and does. I lost a great eight-point on my property last year to a pack....found it all over my field.
Wolves are relentless runners chasing down prey by eyesight, and coyotes are dilly-dallying snooping around scavangers. It’s pretty obvious this is a coyote, thank God. You will hate the day a pack of wolves. . . . because they are real predators.
That’s too bad, that happened to me in Florida on a huge nine-point. For Florida that’s huge. He was probably in the one-twenty-five, one-thirties. Average Alberta whitetail is about one-thirty.
All of us are predators. They’re more intelligent than people comprehend.... Wolves are outright predators. Killers.

ANGELES PEÑA HTTP://WWW.ANPENA.COM.AR/ I was raised in the mountains, in the Andes, Argentina. Most of my work is highly influenced by this place and the people I love most. I like to capture moments of everyday life, finding those beautiful details that make our days. I love nature, and you can appreciate this feeling in my work. These summer pictures were taken far away from home, somewhere I wasn’t familiar with. Most of them are from the Pacific Coast, in Mexico. I spent some weeks with two of my best friends there. I love how this ocean is powerfully beautiful. I really like how everything changes to turn into another shape, the colors in the sky at sunset and the splash of water.

I love animals and plants as a motif. They always give me fresh inspiration. This make me draw illustrations. There are a big dog and a black cat in my parents' home. I feel they are all love.

I would like to expand business overseas more and more and show my illustrations to thousand of people. And I would like to keep drawing until I get old.

I am inspired by lightning, shadows, dense greenery, and the other details of nature [i.e. tiny curls of vines, the iredescent scales of a butterfly wing, mammatus clouds, fireflies, tree roots, wildflowers, human hands...] I feel like my "style" is often dark, but whimsical. I work with almost exclusively film -though, not in opposition to digital -- and still find instant film to be magical. My photos show myself more than my words or appearance ever could. I guess that's why artists are artists.

Summer Sonata in the early hours of the morning, while the moon is stroking the horizon with her hair, a fruit bat plays a piece for her on the eucalypt by my window. the claws of the bat graze the bark softly and swiftly like a pianist on black and white keys. the scratchy notes echo in the syrupy night.
Summer Symphony in the early hours of the evening, while the sky is humming a lullaby to the sun, the stars pick up their wands to punctuate the long lilting notes with sharp bursts on their triangles. under a canopy of salt-laced mangrove leaves, an orchestra of living things joins in. the crickets are on piccolo, the cockatoos are on trumpet, and the mudcrabs are on percussion when they are not suffering from stage fright. in the middle of the creek is a trolley, half-covered in rubbish, and on the trolley sits an ibis, beak open, wings spread, singing the solo in her shrill soprano voice, swaying to and fro like the needle of a metronome.

From Keswick, Ontario, comes a lively indie pop rock ensemble called
The Elwins. Luckily for us, they toured across Canada and we were able to meet them in Vancouver! (Left to Right) Matt, Travis, Frankie, and Feurd.
WHERE DOES THE NAME “THE ELWINS” COME FROM? MATT & TRAVIS: When we started the band we had an ongoing list of potential band names that we added to almost every day. One day after a practice we decided to relax by chilling out and watching the movie Willow (A great film). In Willow there are a race of little hobbit like people called Nelwyns. However, we thought that they were called Elwins and added it to our growing list of potential band names. The list was taken to Travis’ super cool drum teacher, Jesse, to get his advice on what name would be best. Jesse without a doubt said that The Elwins was by far his fave. Some time passed, we lost the list and we still hadn’t settled on a name. Then for Travis’ birthday Jesse gave Travis a T-Shirt. It was brown with shiny silver letters on the front that spelled “THE ELWINS”. We had forgotten about the name and were pleasantly surprised to see it again. We both agreed that this was sign from the gods (and drum god) to move forward as The Elwins.
DID YOU GUYS GROW UP PLAYING MUSIC? FEURD: Not really. I started playing guitar when I was about 14 and I got really obsessive about it. That was it from then on! FRANKIE: I always enjoyed music but I didn’t start playing until high school. MATT: At a young age I took piano lessons with this awesome old lady. I later switched to guitar and started writing songs. TRAVIS: Nope. I was a huge movie buff growing up. It wasn’t until grade 8 when I first heard The Strokes that everything changed inside of me and I wanted to play music. I still don’t know why I chose the drums but that’s another question altogether.

IF YOU COULD MEET ANY MUSICIAN FROM THE PAST, WHO WOULD IT BE? Feurd: Frank Zappa. Frankie: I’d like to hang out with Elvis, seems like he knew how to kick it. Matthew: I would love to hang out with Blossom Dearie when she was hittin’ the clubs. She is the bomb. Travis: Wow! So many to choose...It might be neat to meet William Lyall from the 70’s band Pilot. He was in a league of his own in terms of the kinds of songs he wrote.

WHAT PROVINCE WOULD YOU SAY HAS GOOD THINGS GOING ON FOR MUSIC RIGHT NOW? Feurd: That’s one of the things I really dig about Canada. There is a lot of great music coming out of places that you would never really expect. Next thing you know - BOOM - there’s an amazing band from North Battleford, Saskatchewan! I don’t actually know any bands from there in particular but I like the name. Frankie: British Columbia pumps out the hits! Matthew: PEI! I love the upbeat eastern pop found there. Paper Lions are from PEI and I will have a band crush on them until the day I die. Travis: British Columbia, Ontario, Nova Scotia, Quebec are the ones’ I know great stuff is being generated from. As for the other provinces I simply don’t know enough to say yes or no.

HOW DID YOU COME TO JOIN THE ELWINS? Frankie: I had met Matthew briefly at one of their local shows. Then when I heard they were looking for a bass player I decided to audition. I came on tour and we’ve all been buds ever since!
HOW DOES GROWING UP AND LIVING IN ONTARIO INFLUENCE YOUR MUSIC?
WHAT SORTS OF THINGS DID YOU GET TO SEE AND DO WHILE IN VANCOUVER?
Feurd: Ontario is an awesome place for music. I actually grew up in Edmonton, but all my musical development was in Ontario. I had some really great teachers that helped me develop a lasting passion for all things musical! The music scene is also so diverse here which allows you to get inspiration from a lot of amazing musicians from different cultures and influence. Frankie: The local music scene is really strong so having so many people around with the same passion helps motivate you to do your best. Matthew: I’m not exactly sure but the area where we live is beautiful and that definitely helps in gettin’ the creative juices flowing. Travis: That’s a good question. I wish I had a good answer (laughs) There is a high concentration of Swiss Chalets in Ontario so that’s always comforting.
Feurd- I wish we had spent a little more time just hanging/wandering around Vancouver and checking it out. It seems like such an interesting city with a lot of exciting things happening. You guys gave us a nice little tour which was nice!! Frankie- So many fun things! We went for a swim which was quite pleasant. Matthew- It was awesome to hang out at the CBC building and meet lots of our CBC crushes. Travis- Yea going to the CBC was sweet. Doing this interview and taking pics haha Also getting to visit my aunt who I nearly never see was nice.

If you had to pick a mascot for the band what would it be? Feurd: Some sort of moustached cat monster vibe. Probably would get our bud Graham Ruddy who did our album art to create a new creature for us! What’s the story behind the amazing mustache? Feurd: Inspired by my awesome father! The upper lip was the first thing on my face to sprout hair. I just let it grow and grow and this is where I’ve ended up! The best concert you’ve ever seen? Frankie: As a child I saw Barney The Dinosaur live and he killed it! The last concert you saw? Matthew: The Beach Boys A concert that you’re dying to see live? Travis: None other than The Flaming Lips. I’ve missed them oooh about six times now and it’s getting to the point that it feels sinful.

What are your favorite vintage shops?
When I'm not obsessively browsing Etsy, I like to pop in to some of my favorite East Bay haunts: Pretty Penny Vintage, Mercy Vintage, Down At Lulu's, and Mars Mercantile.

What's the most enjoyable collaboration project you've gotten to do so far?
Oh dear, it's so hard to choose! I think one of the most exciting projects was getting to fly out to LA to shoot a video for DvF with Brad Goreski. It was a bit like a dream! What was being sent by Tumblr to New York Fashion Week like?
It was tons of fun! I always enjoy going to NYFW, but going with Tumblr was a wild ride. I had access to so many shows and met so many amazing people, and they really treated us like royalty. I have to say I barely got any sleep during that particular trip because I was having too much fun soaking up every minute of the experience. I got to meet some really influential people in fashion including Oscar de La Renta, Simon Doonan, and Nina Garcia! I am not worthy!
How does living in California influence your style?
I’ve only ever lived in California, so I can’t say for sure. But what I’ve observed is that California likes to keep it casual. I don’t really go for very fussy looks, and I like to keep things easy enough that I can transition into multiple climates, whether it’s an impromptu trip to the beach, or a quick hike up a mountainside in the woods. What do you enjoy doing on your days off from blogging?
Truth be told, I never really take days off from blogging. Even when I go on vacation, I always bring my camera to snap photos to share on my blog. But when I’m not posing for silly outfit photos, you’ll usually find me exploring the beautiful terrain of Northern California. Either for camping trips, or bicycle tours. I’ve actually toured the entire stretch of Highway 1 along the California coast by bike -- twice!

What is your favourite outfit for summer? Distressed denim, linen shirts and tassel loafers - a mix between pissed off teenager and a rich Italian dude who walks the beaches of the Amalfi coast. How did you come to blog for rodeo.net? The fashion industry in Sweden is very small and everyone knows almost everyone so in this case it was my friend Nike who was blogging on this site and suggested that I should do the menswear there. So I contacted the editors and they loved the idea! We celebrate one year together this fall! What is the next piece you're planning on finding/purchasing? The black brogues from Prada’s F/W 12 capsule collection 'Levitate' - they are so awesome, can't stand it! My other purchase is the banana shirt from Prada’s SS 2011 collection, just found it on eBay but it costs 600 dollars.. Maybe if I only eat rice for the rest of my life I can afford it.. If you had to choose a musician whose sound emulated your style who would it be? Saint Lou Lou, my dear friends Elektra and Miranda. Their dreamwave electro pop is like my style, always changing, slowly in progress. They ooze class and style and are the living proof that money can't buy you style.

Whose style do you admire the most? Francesco Cominelli, may he rest in peace, the editor of Vogue Hommes International whom sadly passed away last year. He knew how to please the streetstyle photographers with a mix of high fashion, vintage and creativity. I also adore Simone Marchetti, he always looks impeccable in prints and bright colors!Always too much and never too much! Love it! What's the best fashion show you've gone to see? That's an easy one! This February I went to Milan fashion week and saw Raf Simons’ last collection for Jil Sander. Not only were the clothes ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC but I also got to see Raf cry his eyes out, Anna Della Russo scream of pure joy and stomp her feet, even Anna Wintour stood up and clapped her hands! A-MAZING! What was it like being photographed for the Sartorialist for the first time? Fun! He wasn't crazy famous like he is now, but about two years later when he shot me for the third, fourth and fifth time it was more of a big deal, people recognized me on the street and my blog got a lot more readers. It's hard to describe my own style without sounding boisterous, but that has never stopped me before. I love the ruggedness and practicality of American styling combined with the elegance of European sensibilities. Was that pretentious enough? haha. However, style transcends what labels you wear, and how you tailor your garments. It is how you carry yourself. It is how you interact with the outside world. My style, anyone's style for that matter, can be encapsulated by how we choose to present ourself to our surroundings.
If you could attend any runway show or presentation, what would you choose to go see? I was just in town for NYFW and the show I really wanted to see was Mark McNairy's. I saw the pics through instagram but it wasn't the same. In fact, Instagram made it worse because they were all blurry. Now that we’re on the subject, STOP POSTING BLURRY PHOTOS ON INSTAGRAM. We need to get rid of the mindset "pics or it didn't happen." because crappy pics make me wish it didn’t happen at all. Nearly everyone has an iPhone or a comparable camera phone. It’s not hard to frame the shot properly. If you didn’t get a good shot, tough luck. Maybe next time. (phew) Ok. Rant over.
Could you tell us some items on your wishlist? - Honda CB 350. Would die for this bike. Hopefully I can swindle one off of craigslist before I'm too old. Actually, I think I might be too old... - Fender American Semi Hollow Telecaster in Butterscotch Blonde with a maple neck paired with a Marshall Plexi head. Perfect guitar tone. PERFECT I SAY. - Every Nike Roshe run that comes out. Most comfortable shoe ever. - And as long as I am asking for things, 50th anniversary Rolex Submariner. My friend has one and it is a beautiful watch.
If you could choose to live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? I want to live in Nashville. I played a couple shows there when I was on tour with a punk band from NYC. The city is amazing. So many rad musicians, really affordable, great restaurants and pretty girls. Did I mention there were pretty girls?

What are some of your other interests? Music. Music. and Music. I have been playing music for a long time. I started on piano when I was 6. Then moved on to jazz trumpet. In 7th grade I moved to guitar in the hopes that it would get me a girlfriend. I was inspired by Marty McFly in Back to the Future pt.1. Unfortunately, it didn't net me a girlfriend, but I have been playing ever since. I played in a bunch of bands, I toured for a bit, saw the country, played awesome venues, and met incredibly creative people. Eventually I realized I would never be able to make a decent living playing only music so I began to start taking pictures of myself and posting them on Tumblr. Somehow that landed me a job in the fashion industry. Haha. Surprisingly, a lot of people who work in the fashion industry got their start by taking photos of themselves. What bands and artists are you listening to this summer? This summer I had Beyonce 4 in heavy rotation. There are so many good tracks on that album. Love On Top is one of the best R&B songs to come out in a long time. Also I have been really digging the album “Livin’, Lovin’, Losin’: Songs of the Louvin Brothers” It is a tribute album performed by the country greats. It actually has one of Johnny Cash’s last recordings before his death. The songs are incredibly sad, but also very beautiful.

What is your favourite go-to outfit?
I've been wearing my high waisted American Apparel jeans non stop recently, they look so lovely teamed with a simple vest, vintage shoes and a secondhand bag.
WHAT IS THE ONE PIECES YOU’VE BEEN GETTING THE MOST WEAR OUT OF THIS SUMMER? My navy blue Converse. I’ve never really been one for casual dressing, but I love how easy they are to style, plus they are pretty comfortable too! ONE ITEM YOU’RE HOPING TO GET FOR FALL? The perfect Autumn/Winter coat. I haven’t yet seen the exact one that I want, but I’m imagining something tailored but slightly oversized, grey and possibly tweed. WHAT AREAS OF LONDON HAVE THE BEST CHARITY SHOPS? Battersea! The majority of my secondhand finds have come from my favourite charity shop on Battersea Park Road or from Battersea Car Boot sale. I’d definitely recommend taking a trip if you are lookin’ for some bargains, though I always say to others to look in every charity shop you pass, as you never know what you might find! WHAT ARE SOME INSPIRING VISUALS TO YOU? The work of William Morris, Audrey Hepburn, the V&A Museum and London. WHAT IS IT ABOUT BUYING USED CLOTHING THAT HAS MORE APPEAL TO YOU THAN BUYING NEW CLOTHING?
WHERE DO YOU GO WHEN YOU WANT SOMEWHERE DIFFERENT TO SHOP?
For me it's the excitement and thrill of finding something beautiful for a couple of pounds, the process of rummaging through the rails, helping out a local charity and the fact that I can buy pieces which I'm not very likely to spot others wearing. Plus I have to say, it's always great when someone compliments my style and outfit and I can say just how little I paid for it all!
As I buy most of my clothes secondhand, I actually go to the high street when I fancy a change! I can’t always find the things I want or need secondhand, as what you find can be so unpredictable, so I occasionally shop in Topshop, American Apparel and New Look.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE IN THE VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM? One of my favourite pieces in the V&A is Strawberry Thief, a furnishing fabric designed by William Morris, which can be found in the British Galleries. I adore the work of Morris, his patterns and the colours he used throughout were all so beautiful - I’m slowly but surely filling up my bedroom with his designs.
