There are two types of mountain bikes- hardtail and full suspension, each of which again has four disciplines- cross-country, trail, enduro and downhill. Continue reading to learn more about them if you are planning to buy a mountain bike.

Hardtail bikes have a suspension fork in the front to manage the bumps on the trail, but the rear wheel is connected securely to the frame It is lighter in weight and less expensive

Full suspension bikes have suspension forks on both front and rear wheels So, they perform better and allow you to ride faster over the rough, muddy terrain and rocks

The four types

1] The cross country or XC mountain bike category comprises a fork that oers up to 100mm of suspension travel, works when climbing, and is capable of relatively smooth o-road descents eciently. These bikes have lower profile tyres than other mountain bikes, making them quicker on soft terrains They are more suitable for everyday cycling on gravel tracks, cycle paths and singletrack trails

2] Trail bikes are the most favoured bike among MTB enthusiasts. These bikes have between 110mm and 150mm of suspension travel, making them perfect for trail centre riding and riding on the downhill sections These bikes are lightweight and ecient, so the climbs aren't too much of a chore

3] Enduro bikes are suitable for all-day-long riding with more emphasis towards descending. With around 160mm to 180mm of suspension travel, these bikes can ride the steepest and roughest descents

4] Downhill or DH bikes are the most eective in the mountain bike world. They can ride the steepest and roughest descents with better stability than other bikes Downhill bikes have around 200mm of suspension travel
