I welcome you to a new school year filled with possibilities, growth, and shared learning experiences. Whether you are new to our school community or have called Lawson home for years, tons of energy and excitement flow throughout our schools, and I am here to tell you it is contagious. Undoubtedly, our schools are more than just buildings; they are vibrant communities where dreams take flight, friendships are forged, and knowledge becomes a guiding light.

As the start of the year has come and we have seen our parking lots come back to life, you may have noticed that our school buildings and grounds look amazing. This is credited to our dedicated maintenance and custodial staff and the student workers who have spent the summer working to ensure we have the best possible space to enter daily to gather and learn safely. The summer has been busy as we completed the Southwest FEMA gymnasium. We were delighted to show off the space for the first time to the community on Tuesday, Aug. 14, with our Grand Opening and ribbon-cutting celebration. The space will benefit our students during the school day, our entire community in the event of severe weather, and our youth sports teams as an elite practice space and location to host youth sporting events. Aside from the FEMA gymnasium, we have also spent a great deal of time updating the exterior of Southwest Elementary to give it a fresh, clean look to match the positive vibes that radiate throughout the hallways. Additionally, we have made several improvements to our middle school and high school campuses that are aesthetically

pleasing and serve the purpose of providing safer learning environments for our students.

While we are excited by the many improvements made to our facilities and the ongoing work to develop a long-range facility plan to lead us into the future, we are even more excited to see the halls, classrooms, gyms, and sports fields again filled with the energy and curiosity that define our Lawson community. May we harness the power from the start of the year to build positive relationships while embracing opportunities for growth, exploration, and creativity, working together to foster an environment where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their fullest potential. In addition, I challenge us all to focus on our mission of “Preparing students for lifelong learning, achievement, and citizenship.”

While our mission is challenging, it is obtainable and sustainable by continuously encouraging our students and each other to approach learning with curiosity and enthusiasm while remembering that learning is a journey and that it’s okay to encounter challenges along the way. After all, each challenge encountered is an opportunity for growth, and I have no doubt we will achieve great things this year so long as we work together while remembering We Are Lawson.

In closing, let us embrace the new school year’s opportunities, be confident in our ability to support one another, and create a positive environment where our Proud Traditions meet today’s challenges and provide us with Endless Possibilities.

The middle school had some great additions to it during the summer. First, there was a wrap added to the outside of the building. It really pops and students can still see out from the inside.

Some new activity areas were added that will allow fun opportunities to our fifth and sixth grade students during their bi-weekly ‘bonus time.’

Most recently, a wrap was added to the front door area and it now screams Cardinal Pride.

Health Room

The health rooms are full of activity as we begin the new school year. We are excited to welcome our new nurse, Brittany Sousley, to the MS/HS health room and all the experience and energy she brings to her new role.

STUDENT HEALTH FORMS

• If your student has brought home a Student Health Form please fill it out and return to school as soon as possible. Even if you filled one out online, please fill out the paper copy also. We are working with a new computer program and we want to make sure that we don’t miss anything this first year. The information on this form helps us provide the best care for your student.

MEDICATIONS

• It is always best to medicate your child at home before or after school, but if that is not possible, a current Medication Authorization Form (for prescription and non-prescription medication) must be completed and returned to the nurse before any medication can be administered at school.

• Prescription medications must be in the original bottle or box (inhalers) with a label attached by a pharmacy that shows: name of student, name of medication, dosage/ dosing instructions, date purchased (must be a current prescription) and prescribing physician’s name.

• If your student will require non-prescription medication, it should be delivered to the nurse’s office in the original sealed bottle.

• All medication must be delivered to the school by a parent/guardian or other responsible adult—it should not be sent on the school bus or with the student.

WEATHER

• It’s warm when we start school but things change quickly. Please make sure that your student is dressed appropriately for the weather.

• Students can bring a water bottle with them—hydration is important in all seasons!

• When the weather starts getting cooler, help your student remember to pack a jacket or coat if you think there is a possibility that he/ she will be outside. Younger students might

PREVENTION / FLU

• We all need to do what we can to prevent the spread of germs/infections.

• Along with frequent hand washing and covering coughs/sneezes, it is recommended that parents perform a daily/ morning assessment of their student(s) to help keep students and staff healthy and safe.

• If students have a temperature greater than 100 degrees and/or any symptoms that might spread germs or would keep them from being able to participate in class (vomiting, excessive coughing, etc.), please keep them home until they are symptom free for at least 24 hours without the aid of

MCDA Summer Youth Honor Choirs

After great success in the 2022-2023 school year, Mrs. Covey is excited to see what this year has in store for the music department. As a conclusion to last year, 19 middle and high students had great success at the Missouri Choral Directors Association Summer Honor Choirs held in Springfield in July. A tradition of the summer honor choirs is to recognize legacy members of the program. For the first time ever, Lawson not only had one student recognized, but three. Emerson Yarbrough, a junior at Lawson High School, was recognized as a sevenyear member of the choirs and Allison Hochwender and Lila Tucker, also juniors at Lawson High School, were recognized as six-year members. Since the summer of 2009, Lawson has had over 107 students selected for these auditioned state-level honor choirs. Lawson is definitely making a musical legacy.

Increased Enrollment

The vocal music program is experiencing growth. Numbers had dwindled quite low over the past three years, but enrollment is on the rise. Over 70 students are singing in choir in grades 7-12. This is an increase of approximately 20 students from this time last year. Auditions for our 5/6 grade after school choir, Cardinal Chorale, took place in September and Mrs. Covey is encouraged that interest in this group will be high. Students will be showcasing their talents in numerous performances throughout the year. The first is scheduled for Wednesday,

• Flu season is just around the corner and an influenza vaccine might help prevent or lessen the effects of this illness.

IMMUNIZATIONS

• At the beginning of every year, we review immunization and health form records. If your student entered kindergarten/8th/12th grade, you need to make sure that the health room has been given a copy of required immunizations to ensure that your student is compliant and can remain in class.

• Many families in our district rely on the Ray County Health Department for immunizations and other services. The Health Department holds a clinic in Lawson at the Community Center on the fourth

HS Piano Program Expands

In other exciting news is the expansion of the high school piano class. What started as a single semester class in Jan. 2022, has now turned into a year-long class. Students have the option of taking the class for a single semester or for the full year. Students come in with a variety of skill sets and progress at their own pace as the course continues. Students will perform an informal recital during the school day at the end of each semester to showcase what they have achieved.

NW All-District Choir

Seventeen Lawson High School students traveled to Missouri Western and auditioned for the Northwest AllDistrict Choir to be held Oct. 28 at Platte County HS. The students identified two major key signatures, sight read a melodic example and a harmonic example as well as performed a prepared solo for a panel of judges in a blind audition. Those students selected for this year’s ensemble are: Ava Briegel (12), Cara Siebert (11), Haley Hollon (12), Jacklyn Thompson (11), Josilyn Sandoval (11), Madelyn Hazlett (9), Aleah Johnson (10), Allison Hochwender (11), Haley Lewis (11), Lola Bolinger (10), Riley Smith (11), Vivien McQuerrey (11), and Cade Shafer (12). All juniors and seniors are now eligible to audition for the All-State choir to be held in January.

Friday of the month from 1-3 p.m. The Health Department also does immunizations by appointment at their office in Richmond, MO (816-776-5413).

Student-athletes volunteer, freshening up the ‘L’ hillside along with other projects throughout the town.

Community connection

Lawson High School sports teams focused on some volunteer work this summer with the major project focusing on freshening up the L hillside on D highway. Volleyball, softball, wrestling (girls and boys), cheer, football, and baseball teams came together to haul rock, lay rock, paint, weed, muck, and pick up trash on and around the L hillside. The hillside was a project from 2015 that LHS came together

to create, and so now it has a major refresh due to the efforts of our current student athletes. Coach Gary Belcher also highlighted golf’s work with LYSA for a youth golf camp and with boys basketball working out at Wilderness Camp. Girls basketball, volleyball, and football have helped with the lighting ceremony for the city. Girls basketball also has a canned food drive every winter.

In conjunction with the Lawson Youth Sports Association and Hidden Valley Golf Course, our high school girls and boys players served as volunteers to host 66 youth campers attending our golf camp, including 34 five to eight-year-olds and 32 nine to thirteen-year-olds).

The 2023 Lanidrac yearbook was selected as part of the Walsworth Gallery of Excellence. ms cLAss Learns the Engineering Process Through a Challenge

Ms. Taylor Cotton’s 7th and 8th grade Special Projects class has already started to learn about the engineering process by competing in a quick challenge to build the tallest free-standing structure using limited materials: 10 pieces of white copy paper and 1 foot of masking tape. Lmc grAnt for Audio & eBooks

Awarded

In July, the Lawson Middle/High Library Media Center received a $500 grant from the Walmart Community Foundation.. This grant was awarded from Walmart Facility #195 in Excelsior Springs, Mo. The grant money will be used to purchase audiobooks and ebooks for the SORA reading app that is provided by the Lawson Library Media Center to all students for their independent and educational reading needs. The grant will allow for more students to have access to reading materials on their personal devices free of charge and expand access to the audiobooks.

pArents As teAchers Program Update

We have had a good amount of growth in the Parents as Teachers Program over the last two years! With that being said I would like to introduce you to our newest Parent Educator, Ms. Taylor Alberti. Some of you may be familiar with Ms. Alberti as she is our Early Childhood Special Education teacher at Southwest. She will be doing some family visits after school and in the evenings, helping plan and hold group events, helping with screenings and helping design/ update the PAT website and newsletters.

I am very excited to have Ms. Alberti as part of the Parents as Teachers program. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program and I look forward to partnering with her! We now have room for even more families!

“It takes a village” is more than just a phrase to us. It is our goal to strengthen our Lawson Cardinal Village, by connecting with families, providing resources and personalized visits. We provide screenings for preschoolers prior to kindergarten entry. The screening gives us the ability to track the amazing growth your child will have over the next year. We also screen your child’s vision and hearing. Beyond screenings, we also provide personalized visits and group connections for all families with children prenatal to Kindergarten entry. Cardinal’s Nest is a childcare/preschool program for children 3-5 years of age. We are located in Southwest Elementary. This is the program’s 23rd year in service. We offer enrollment to the Lawson School District staff first then any available openings after that are filled by the community. Preschoolaged children love to learn, so our activities focus on “hands-on” sensory experiences to help them understand concepts as we emphasize pre reading skills, problem solving as well as oral and written language skills. Cooperative learning enhances social skills, while our projects focus on the process not the product. It is our goal to have open communication every step of the way as we provide care and education. This

includes helping teach children lessons that will last throughout their lives like sharing, cooperation, self confidence and respect for others. Since they are learning by doing, it’s both fun and educational at the same time. Cardinal’s Nest is in full swing with full enrollment for this year. We have 16 fun, energetic friends who are eager to learn. Our program is directed by Bobbi Quick and assisted by Mendy Hedges and Traci Calvert. We currently have nine returning Nesters and seven new friends. We are looking forward to a super fun year and learning new things. Lawson High School has been a proud A+ designated school since the early ‘90s, providing 1000+ LHS students with the opportunity to pursue post-secondary education without the cost of tuition.

• Throughout the course of the last academic year (Summer ‘22, Fall ‘22 and ‘Spring 23) Lawson High School Graduates received a combined $99,764 in financial benefits from Metropolitan Community Colleges alone.
