Sheets named Best Financial Advisor
BY ROBBY O’DANIEL robby@lafollettepress.com Zach Sheets won Best Financial Advisor in the 2023 LaFollette Press Readers’ Choice Awards. “I cannot express just how much it means to me to once again be voted as the Readers’ Choice for Best Financial Advisor in 2023,” Sheets said. “When an award is freely voted on like this award, there is so much more meaning to it, given that the public voted on it without anyone campaigning. There is no greater honor than knowing that the people in my community believe that I am the best financial advisor in the community and the go-to person for their financial needs. This is especially true when all financial advisors offer the same or similar products in most cases, which means it really comes down to the service and effort I deliver for my clients. I am truly honored and blessed to receive this award from the very people I serve. “I would also add that receiving a community award means so much to me as I have always been committed to making a difference in this wonderful community in which I live and work in. I am also blessed to be a part of an organization which is supportive of my LaFollette Press
efforts and allows me the flexibility in my schedule to be a part of change for the good in our community. Whether it is the food drives, toy drives or school supply drives I run annually or being chairman of our local Habitat for Humanity, Edward Jones is always supportive of my efforts in Campbell County. I truly believe that receiving the Readers’ Choice Award is partially due to my passion for helping this community beyond the simple borders of the financial advisor position. Eagle Tire Pros wins Best Auto Repair/Servicing
BY ROBBY O’DANIEL robby@lafollettepress.com Eagle Tire Pros won Best Auto Repair/Servicing in the 2023 LaFollette Press Readers’ Choice Awards. “We are totally flattered,” General Manager Brandon Johnson said on receiving the award. “We work so hard every day — both for our customers and in the community — and this recognition is something we really appreciate. It means the most, though, to our technicians in the back of the shop to know that their hard work is valued.” The business is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Mondays through Fridays and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, he said. “We originally started as just Eagle Tire,” Johnson said. “The name came from us being located on Eagle Mound behind Eagle Market. About 15 years ago, we joined the Tire Pros network, and changed our name to reflect that. Tire Pros is one of the nation’s largest networks of locally owned and operated tire stores.” Eagle Tire Pros is currently located in Jacksboro at 2537 Jacksboro Pike, Johnson said. There are 10 people on staff, Johnson said. “Eagle Tire Pros is a full-service tire and automotive repair shop,” Johnson said. “We do everything from tires and brakes to tune up and transmissions. Register of Deeds named Best Government Office
BY ROBBY O’DANIEL robby@lafollettepress.com The Campbell County Register of Deeds office was named the Best Government Office in the 2023 LaFollette Press Readers’ Choice Awards. “I feel so humbled and honored that my office has been voted Best Government Office two years in a row by the Readers’ Choice,” said Campbell County Register of Deeds Brittany Miller Foust. “My staff and I will always strive to do the very best for Campbell County!” Foust was one of several elected officials who spoke at the Campbell County Children’s Center’s 8th Annual Auction 14 • READERS’ CHOICE
and Dinner on Aug. 24 at Ball Farm Event Center. “We’re continuing to grow our office and keep it up to date,” Foust said on Aug. 24. “I’ve made friendships with registers all across the state of Tennessee. They took me into the register family like I’ve been there for years. But yeah, thank you all for having us here tonight, and we’re going to do our best for Campbell County.” Foust addressed three things that her office had done, beginning with purchasing a scanner and copier to allow the office to run smoother, she said. “The second thing was to get all of our surveys and my plats online,” Foust said. “So that helps our title searchers,
our realtors, to search for that online instead of us pulling it out of a cabinet, putting it on a standard copier and piecing it together and then emailing it. So we have everything online now, thanks to my staff. I’m very thankful for them. They make me look good. So the third thing that I wanted to do was get the fraud alert system in place. I had noticed during the election that a lot of the registers across the state had a fraud alert system. So I checked into that, and we have that now. It’s complimentary if you want to sign up. Roane State voted Best College in Readers’ Choice
BY ROBBY O’DANIEL robby@lafollettepress.com Roane State Community College was named Best College in the 2023 LaFollette Press Readers’ Choice Awards. New Roane State Campbell County campus director Sharon Wilson spoke about the educational opportunities at Roane State during the South Campbell County Rotary Club meeting on Oct. 10 at LaFollette Methodist Church. “Middle college started several years ago, and that’s where rising juniors can take their two years of college while they’re still in high school,” Wilson said. Local students can graduate high school with an associate’s degree if they participate in the Middle College Program at Roane State Community College. “They have to be recommended from high school administration, need LaFollette Press
certain ACT scores to qualify,” Wilson said. Wilson warned that middle-college students need to be dedicated. “It does take a level of maturity and motivation to do the middle college program, and we have great students who are graduated and going on, getting ahead, and it saves the parents a lot of money,” Wilson said. “We have 11 students currently enrolled in middle college: six college freshmen and five sophomores. Five graduate in May. Through that program, the state legislature has a $2,000-per-semester scholarship that the students can apply for, $8,000 in scholarships by doing the middle college program.” Then there is early college at Roane State. “This one’s really catching on,” Wilson said. “This is where students can complete their first year while they’re in high school, and we’re really targeting
the health science students. At Oneida High School, I had a student. She did all her prerequisites while she was in high school through early college. She moved directly into the nursing program after high school.” Wilson was most recently the Roane State Scott County campus director for years. “And if anybody knows me, that is my goal for every student I sit down with, to try to help them find a pathway where they graduate with minimal student debt because a lot of you are probably like me. I ended up having a lot of student debt, so I try every way I can to help my students avoid that,” Wilson said. The dual-enrollment program at Roane State is most likely the college’s strongest program, Wilson said. “Courses one through five are completely covered for tuition and fees with the dual-enrollment grant,” Wilson said. “Class No. 6 their senior year, they get $300 with the dual-enrollment grant, and then Roane State has a scholarship that will pick up the remaining fees for that sixth course. So there’s six courses they can get completely free. And then seven through 10, they can get a $300 grant per semester, and then they would have to pick up the remaining fee.” More than 200 Campbell County High School students are participating in the dual-enrollment program, and there are 11 Jellico High School students who are participating, Wilson said. “My goal for Jellico High School is to offer at least five classes on their high school campus, so that those students have the opportunity to take those free classes while they’re in high school,” Wilson said. “So we’re looking forward to expanding in that area.” There is also the Tennessee Reconnect scholarship available for adults, Wilson said. “Any Tennessee resident that has lived in Tennessee for a year, that does not have an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree, can qualify for the Reconnect scholarship,” Wilson said, “and that will cover the cost of tuition and mandatory fees.” READERS’ CHOICE • 19

Mandi Peavley owns and operates Smokin’ Holler BBQ with her husband, Jeremy, and her cousin, Bill. “We’re absolutely over the moon about it! Excited, shocked, and thankful all come to mind,” Mandi Peavley said on winning the award. “We’ve had an extremely difficult couple of months with equipment and building issues, so this was a huge light in all the dark we’ve gone through.” Smokin’ Holler also won Best New Thing About Campbell County in the awards. location is at the old Scotty’s building in Caryville. “We went into the building with very high hopes, but just as honest as I can be, we were highly misinformed,” Mandi Peavley said on Oct. 8. “During our second week open, things started breaking down and malfunctioning. Within our first month, we had plumbing fixed, multiple fridges replaced, and ran into other issues. Then, eventually, due to lack of maintenance and upkeep, our entire vent system went down, leaving us unable to use our grill and fryers. After purchasing all new parts to repair and replace it, we found someone to do the job only to have them come out and let us know the roof was inaccessible. We’ve since had multiple other issues, so we had to make the difficult decision to close
the doors temporarily until everything is fixed. We just can’t let people come in and dine like that. It isn’t fair to our customers. My husband and I pay everything out of pocket in regards to repairs and equipment, so it has been difficult. We have had so many people asking us if and when we’re going to open back up, telling us how much they miss the food. I wish I had that answer, but I unfortunately don’t at this time. We do want our customers to know how much we appreciate their support and patience. We are not giving up, and we will be back! In the meantime, we do still offer catering, and we do take family orders.
