For Inquiring Moms – “How to Accomplish EVERYTHING” Friends or family members sometimes ask me, “How do you do it? How do you fit it all in? You’re always going places, attending parties, working, cooking, cleaning, creating, and raising successful young adults?” And I wonder, “Do I accomplish any more than anyone else?” Sure, I enjoy planning fun things to do. I work hard, play hard and dream big! Yeah, I try to fit it all in, the whole “kit and caboodle.” Maybe it’s an anxious habit. Maybe I fear a race against time. Whatever the reason, if I’ve got anyone fooled about having it “all together,” then I must ask myself, “How the heck am I pulling this off?” I’ve decided that I don’t have any more time or energy than anyone else. I’m fairly certain that there are just two reasons why I’m having success with “accomplishment,” through the eyes of my closest friends. Reason number one – I don’t accomplish everything! I don’t participate in things that I don’t deem priority. I don’t like to watch television, I don’t enjoy talking on the phone, I don’t commute to work, I don’t obligate myself to circumstances that I don’t enjoy. I find that if I’m passionate about something, I’m far more likely to be motivated to complete it. I guess I’ve conditioned myself to spend
the time that counts, the “free time,” on the enjoyable. For me, enjoyment comes from organization. I’ll admit, I’m constantly scratching things off a ‘to do’ list. And reason number two – I constantly work to make things better. Whether that happens to be a personal interest story I’m covering for My Hometown Estrella or a new healthy recipe I’m designing or tweaking in my kitchen; I delegate, prioritize, write it down, dream about it, and then sometimes, when necessary, let the concept go. I’ve learned that nothing works harder for your own cause than you do. Want to accomplish everything? Define your own everything. Set your own foundation. Don’t accomplish “the whole enchilada,” just accomplish what sums up everything for you! Enjoy this month in Estrella. It’s a month of music – the Symphony’s returning, and a month centered on someone special, Mom. The following pages are filled with information and articles that I think you’ll find both useful and enjoyable. Happy Mother’s Day!

on your doorstep A Breath of Fresh Air For Teresa Degraff and her daughter Sydnie, Mother’s Day, and every day, brings hope for breathing fresh air. Sydnie was diagnosed with severe asthma at the age of two. That prognosis has forever changed the lives of the Degraff family and how they go about day-to-day activities that seem effortless for most of us. Ten-year-old Sydnie is the youngest of three of the DeGraff children. She has an older brother, Austin, 14, and her sister Brenna is 12. At the tender age of one, Sydnie had a couple of bouts with pneumonia which sparked concern with her doctors and led to the severe asthma diagnosis one year later. “We always had to be careful with her during a change of season; each bringing a different concern,” says her mom, Teresa. Spring brings blooming, during the summer its dust storms, fall means dealing with blooming shrubs and plants, and during the winter it’s wood burning stoves and wind storms. Her sensitivity to chemicals such as laundry detergent, perfume, hair products and cleaning products is something she deals with every day, no matter what the season. And if a bad ozone day is predicted, Syndie must stay indoors. Despite the daily obstacles of numerous doctor office visits, dealing with air quality, smells, weather concerns and fatigue, Sydnie’s mom says that Sydnie maintains an upbeat attitude and is almost always on the go. “She is a planner,” says Teresa. “She plans for outings and events for months in advance, often utilizing a checklist. Although we’ve told her many times before that she would make a great event planner, Sydnie has dreams of becoming a fashion designer.” To keep her asthma under control, she takes daily medications. “She loves to play outside with her friends and ride her bike. However, a lot of things, including any kind of extracurricular activities, have to come in small does for Sydnie,” her mom confided. Even actions that many of her friends participate in routinely, like physical education at school, or dance have to
be carefully planned and monitored and always require an inhaler on hand. When her friends plan sleepovers, their pre-party choices include which movie or pair of pajamas to bring to the party. Sydnie’s overnight bag, on the other hand, contains peak flow meters, medicine, inhaler, and a nebulizer. “We are so blessed that many of the parents of Sydnie’s friends understand her situation and are willing to take responsibility and go the extra mile of having a severe asthmatic, sleepover,” Teresa adds. The Degraff family grasps at positive ways to deal with their daily obstacles and don’t take asthma lying down. They have been volunteering with the American Lung Association and walking their Fight For Air walk for three years now. This year, Sydnie was asked to be the Youth Ambassador for the American Lung Association and through the month of April appeared on television through public service announcements with Fox 10 news. Sydie came up with the idea of running a “penny war” at Westar elementary to raise money for research and bring awareness to not only asthma, but lung cancer, COPD and various other lung diseases. When the Degraffs met with her school’s Principal, Mr. Bogart, he was receptive and proactive in making sure the Westar community jumped in to help. Syndie’s efforts to raise money for awareness produced an outstanding $2,813.65. While Sydnie’s situation often seems consuming and overwhelming, the Degraffs are accustomed to knowing some of the issues that asthma can cause. At the age of 20, her mom Teresa was diagnosed with adult onset asthma. “I have managed to know my body and my triggers well enough to be able to keep it under control with minimal issues. I watch my daughter’s struggles sometimes in sadness and fear that she will miss out on the next activity,” she said. Yet, despite all of the daily stumbling blocks, the Degraffs continue to focus on positive ways to bring fresh air into the lives of all who struggle with lung disease.

Graduation Set for Estrella Foothills High School Class of 2012!
Mrs. Matteson’s 4th grade class at Westar Elementary School was generously granted the opportunity of a lifetime thanks to “Uncle Alan”, the very generous uncle of Joe Gallagher, an amazing fourth-grade student in Mrs. Matteson’s class. After researching players and following their game stats throughout the course of the season, these students were very eager to see their players in person! They prepared for their big day during “Stat Time Tuesday” where each student used XOOMS to research specific stats and applied various mathematical concepts including decimals, percentages, ratios, and probability to the information they were gathering. This unit of study provided a relevant learning experience, where the children realized that even sports fans need to know math! Game day arrived on March 12 at 7pm. Mrs. Matteson and her students sat together in a box suite at the U.S. Airways stadium to watch the Phoenix Suns come to life right before their eyes! “I know this is an experience that my students and I will never forget!” said Shawna Matteson, 4th grade teacher at Westar Elementary School.

Notes from Estrella Foothills High School Principal, Leslie Standerfer Estrella Foothills High School is proud to announce that our eighth class of graduates are preparing for the fast-approaching conclusion to their high school years. The commencement ceremony for the Class of 2012 will take place on Thursday, May 17 at 8pm at the Goodyear Ballpark. This is the second year we will be at the ballpark; which provides more parking, more seating, and better views of the ceremony for those in attendance than the athletic stadium on campus. If you plan to celebrate with our graduates, we do ask that you not bring balloons, noise makers, and other things into the ballpark that can be distracting to those seated around you and take away from the dignity of the ceremony. We want to make sure that this is a memorable event for all our graduates and those in attendance to support them on this special occasion. On Wednesday, May 9 at 7pm, our Senior Awards Night will be held in the EFHS Performing Arts Center. This event is a wonderful opportunity to recognize scholarship offerings and individual accomplishments of our graduates. As the Class of 2012 prepares for the approaching graduation, we invite everyone to join us in honoring them by saying congratulations when you see them in the community. And, I urge the graduates to take time to express appreciation to those who have helped them get to this point and to return the favor by mentoring others throughout their lives. Estrella Soccer Players Selected for MLS Tryouts
Submitted by Jen Barber, Arizona In ACTION Have your kids brought home any bicycle or walker charms from school? The charms are rewards for students wearing helmets while on bikes and scooters and for walking to school. It’s all part of a program called Lids on Arizona Kids®. Estrella Mountain and Westar Elementary Schools are part of this pilot program run by the nonprofit Arizona in ACTION. In the State of Arizona, helmets are not required by law for children on bikes and scooters. Back in December 2011, just 3 of 50 students at Estrella Mountain Elementary School and 4 out of 64 students at Westar Elementary School were wearing helmets while riding to school on their bikes and scooters. Today, that number is up to 20 kids wearing helmets at each school!

Worldnetsoccer President, Gustavo Martinez and his coaching staff, are pleased to announce that three Worldnetsoccer players were selected to try out for the Major League Soccer (MLS) Academy recently at Casa Grande Sports Center. Erick Armenta, age 16, from Desert Edge High School, along with Ricardo Sanchez, age 15 and Daniel Martinez, age 16, are both from Estrella Foothills High School. All three were selected by Worldnetsoccer coaching staff to represent Worldnetsoccer Club in the MLS Academy Try Outs, which is directed by Martin Vasquez - US National Team’s Assistant Coach. Players traveled to Casa Grande for the competition and received great reviews from Coach Vasquez and his staff. The three selected players will return to Casa Grande for the next leg of tryouts in May. If selected into the MLS Academy, each soccer player faces the decision to remain in his current high school and travel to Casa Grande for training three to four times weekly, or relocate to Casa Grande to attend the MLS Academy.
Along with the charms, Arizona in ACTION brings in local businesses and celebrities to hand out the charms. At the end of this school semester in May, Arizona in ACTION will be giving out awards and certificates to the children with the most charms. Over the summer, you can keep your children safe by remembering to follow these simple suggestions from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

Potentially, players can be awarded scholarships to colleges and universities, as well as spots on the MLS and US National Teams. In 2011, 90 percent of the senior class in the MLS Academy was awarded a full-ride scholarship to various colleges and universities.

Two students from the culinary program at Estrella Community College have been interning with the Chef for the past several months and have been introduced to all aspects of starting a food service operation from the ground up. The challenges and successes of a startup operation are many and the experience will help them to succeed in their culinary future. Melanie Miranda, a Culinary Student at Estrella Community College, coined the comment, “Chef Michael’s magical powers.” She says, “Magicians do not share their secrets about the performance of their magic tricks, therefor; a Chef also needs to keep his cuisine ingredients secret.”

The date has been selected for the Travel Club’s trip to Bisbee: June 22-24, 2012. We will be meeting at Starpointe and caravanning down south. Possible side events include a visit to Tombstone, Kartchner Caverns State Park, Chiricahua National Monument and Colossal Cave in addition to the Copper Queen Motel, the Copper Queen Mine, and Smithsonian Mining and Historical Museum in Bisbee – plus lots of shopping possibilities. HOA special report Board of Directors Approve 2012 Community Goals In December of 2011, the Estrella Board of Directors, in collaboration with Capital Consultants Management Corporation, undertook development of 2012 Community-Wide Goals. Following several months of refinement, the initial list of 41 goals were rank ordered as High Priority, Lower Priority, or “Tasks� requiring ongoing attention by the Board of Directors and Management Company. Objective: Continuously improve the Estrella community as a quality place to live and recreate by enhancing administrative processes; financial efficiencies; safety/security; community esthetics; resident communications; community services and by promoting community spirit. Community Administration 1. Maintain equitable and timely enforcement of community covenants. Using annual community survey results, improve the percent of residents evaluating enforcement activities as “meeting� or “exceeding� resident expectations from 49.9% (2011) to 60% or greater (2012). 2. Create and implement a web-based Community Concern and Response tracking system for use by residents and staff. The assessment of system requirements shall be completed during 2Q2012, with full system implementation completed by the 4Q2012. Starpointe Residents Club 1. Implement all Starpointe Residents Club related Operational Plan projects on time and on budget subsequent to approval by the Board of Directors. 2. Accomplish all Starpointe maintenance activities as stipulated in the Starpointe Maintenance, Use and Operating Agreement (Exhibit “B�) to include providing monthly feedback to the Community Manager and Board of Directors. Process and Procedures 1. Create and implement a comprehensive preventative maintenance plan (contractor and in-house personnel) for all community assets. The evaluation of system requirements is to be completed by 3Q2012, and full program implementation completed by 4Q2012. Communications 1. Improve communications regarding community governance structure, committees, activities and goals using all available means (e-mail “blasts�, Voting Member Committee, Life-in-Estrella, My Hometown Estrella, Town Hall and Annual Meetings, New Resident Orientation). The Communications Committee is to submit a 2012 work plan by the 1Q2012. 2. Create and implement an action plan to increase number of registered users on the Life in Estrella web site by 25% year-over-year (2011 – 1,821 registered users) and improve the web site user interface as evaluated by residents. HOA special report 2012 Community Asset Replacement/Refurbishment Plan Developed Annually, the Management Company develops an “Annual Operational Plan” to replace or refurbish community assets that have reached their “useful life”. Projects considered for the plan include improvements funded in the 2012 Operating Budget, as approved in October 2011 and projects identified in the community’s Reserve Study as having met their projected “useful life”. Using these two sources, the staff develops an “Annual Operational Plan” containing all proposed projects. After detailed evaluation by the staff, a final list of projects is prepared, implementation schedules are developed and the overall plan is reviewed with the Board of Directors. Pool Season is Right Around the Corner!
The community has spoken and we’re listening. Now that the big pool is open all year round, the lap pool will go back to what it was originally designed for… lap swimming! Effective immediately you must be 16 years of age or have completed the VIT program, which you are eligible for when you turn 13 years old. The lap pool was never intended for wading, lounging or as a splash pool. The only exception to this rule is swim lessons with Aqua Tots for any child under the age of 13. For any questions or concerns regarding the lap pool rule changes, please contact Dean Westover or Tammy Campbell at 623-386-1949.

who are the
people in your neighborhood The Sullivans- Mike, Gina, Dylan and Jagger As a Commercial Pilot for Alaska Airlines, Mike Sullivan journeys the West Coast from a bird’s eye view often. He’s in the air approximately seventeen days a month, in-route to and from destinations lining the western coast from as far north as Canada and as far south as cities in Mexico. On occasion a flight requirement takes him to the extremity of the northwest continent, Alaska. “He’s a natural at flying,” says Gina, as she recalls how Mike has been around planes his entire life. His father, a retired Captain, worked for Northwest Airlines and owned his own private Cessna when Mike was growing up. Unlike most teens, Mike’s transportation consisted of a bike and a plane, rather than a car. His wife Gina, a former flight attendant for Mesa Airlines for more than seven years, met her “favorite Captain” fourteen years ago and the two have been ‘flying high’ since. They’ve since married, began a family, and have landed in Estrella. They’ve been members of this community for seven years, with their most recent home situated in Ironwood Pointe. Both Gina and Mike are originally from Oregon and Seattle, respectively, and found our beautiful Arizona community while visiting friends in Estrella, where Gina says they fell in love with the lifestyle. Gina says that nothing makes the Sullivan family happier than being in this wonderful community, surrounded by friends and participating in the very ‘grounded’ sporting activities that each of them participate. Mike and
Gina are hooked on Estrella Adult Sports, currently engaged in sand volleyball. It’s actively participating in local sporting events and Sundays at the park barbecues where they gather with friends and watch the kids play. Mike and Gina have two spirited boys, Dylan and Jagger. The two Westar elementary students may have met their energetic match with the new puppy in the house, Bennie, a Havanese, named after the pop-single, “Bennie and the Jets”, written by English rock-singer Elton John. So far Bennie’s been a great rough and tumble match for the boys when they’re not on a basketball or soccer field with an Estrella youth sporting event. Dylan and Jagger also enjoy escaping on occasional fishing trips with dad at local lakes and rivers. The Sullivans also attend Estrella Mountain Church on Wednesday evenings where they share food and worship with a great group of friends. It seems they have made important connections in a variety of settings within the community. With all of the activities stirring in the household, it’s rare to experience ‘relax’ time, but it is something they occasionally submit to with a great movie and pizza delivery.

A Bouquet of Thoughts about Mom
Two Moms in the Estrella Community shared their inspirations on what a day marked especially to honor Mom, means to them.
Melanie Chittester, Yoga Enthusiast and Mom, shared her thoughts “Mother’s Day will always be more about my Mother than about being a mother myself. I had a very happy childhood – my Mother was a Super Mom. She was loving, caring, generous, giving, hardworking and somehow managed to “do it all”. I was always close to my Mom, I never questioned her love and faith in me…there was never a doubt that she wanted the best for me and believed in me. I was always aware of what a good person she was and what a wonderful mother she was, and for that I am truly grateful. I lost my Mom nearly five years ago; she died of a sudden heart attack. There was no warning, no chance to say good-bye. I had her for 38 years, I wanted more. It wasn’t until I became a mother myself that I truly realized just what being a mother meant: the magnitude of that relationship, the bond, the love, the responsibility cannot be fully realized until you experience it firsthand. It was at that moment that I began to realize, to grasp the true meaning of motherhood…..and then I loved my Mother more.”

Jennifer wants her husband to clean the house! Tane would like to be able to sleep in past 7am! Jennifer M. wants her children to sleep L-A-T-E! ary D. and Andrea are both hoping for a clean house on M Sunday, May 13. And yet another Jennifer, would love a full week’s vacation! Shi Feliciano, Stay-at-home Mother of two, enjoys the special treatment she receives from her family “When you have little kids, the thought of sleeping in might sound heavenly. As an early riser, “sleeping in” for me is a tad different. I will inevitably wake at 5:30am, a good hour before my husband and kids rise. So my Mother’s Day begins with me, waking to a silent house, attempting to fall back to sleep, failing and then ultimately pretending to sleep in. Eventually, I hear my 7-year-old son start to stir. He tries to play quietly until my 9-year-old daughter joins him. I lay there listening to their “whispers” as I hear breakfast-in-bed plans unfold as they head to the kitchen. I nudge my husband awake so he can control the kitchen chaos. For the next 30 minutes I enjoy the serenade of the pots and pans, the sizzle of the bacon, and the testing of my family’s teamwork. When the three of them appear in our room with my breakfast plate, the joy in their faces looks remarkably similar to their faces on Christmas morning and I don’t know which of us is happier!”

business spotlight Cowgirls Bar & Grill There’s a place, not too far down the road from the winding hills of Estrella, where the city skyline and buzzing traffic are erased by the serenity of a comforting destination with a western-themed atmosphere and plenty of room on the dance floor. The National Center for Safe Routes to School has deemed May 9, 2012 the first ever National Bike to School Day. Estrella has two elementary schools and one high school conveniently located inside the community, making it easy to walk or bike to class. Students and parents are encouraged to don their helmets and pedal to school in an effort to create awareness for healthy lifestyles and physical fitness. National Bike to School Day is a part of National Bike Month, and is being held just prior to Bike to Work Week – May 14 through 18. Established in May 2006, the National Center for Safe Routes to School assists states and communities in enabling and encouraging children to safely walk and bicycle to school.
