FountainMediaGroup inc. publications that build community

Our mission for Back At The Ranch is to connect 4S residents to each other and to key resources with the goal of building community in 4S Ranch and the greater Rancho Bernardo area. Back at The Ranch is a great example of what can happen when neighbors build strong relationships and get busy putting their ideas and skills together for the good of the community. We hope you find this community publication reflective of our excitement to be in 4S Ranch and our desire to build something that brings us all closer together. We invite you to join in the fun and get involved. Copyright 2012. All rights reserved. Reproduction in any form, in whole or part, without written permission is prohibited. Back at the Ranch (BATR) is a monthly publication highlighting house, home and community building. BATR accepts freelance contributions, though there is no guarantee that unsolicited material will be returned. BATR is not responsible for the views of contributing writers and assumes no responsibility for errors appearing within. Opinions expressed are those of the writers and not necessarily those of the Publisher or advertisers. We reserve the right to restrict all advertisements to their proper classification and to edit or reject any copy.

Let’s start with introductions. My name is Mike Minjares and I’m serving as the interim Community Editor for this wonderful community publication Back At The Ranch. All of us with Fountain Media Group, the publishers of Back At The Ranch, would like to thank Debi Renken for the many years of outstanding service she has provided to this monthly newspaper and, thus, the residents of the 4S Ranch community. As a resident, Debi brought a commitment and dedication to her position writing and editing for this publication that set quite a standard to try and meet. We wish her all the best in her next professional adventure, though we fully expect (and hope) that she will be a frequent contributor to the beloved newspaper that she helped build. As for me, I step into this position excited about the opportunity to learn about a great, local community that I have only read about. For just about a year now I have served as the Managing Editor for three of the Fountain Media Group’s four publications – Back At The Ranch, The Fountain and My Hometown Estrella. For more than four years I have worked as the Editor, Writer and Community Director for My Hometown Chula Vista Magazine, the fourth monthly communication vehicle we produce. I thoroughly enjoy the chance to bring interesting, educational, inspiring, challenging and newsworthy stories about and to each of the communities we serve. I’m proud of how each of our publications is seen as a source of positive news about the events, activities, people and businesses that make these communities – and that definitely includes 4S Ranch – such wonderful places to raise a family, go to school, own a business or simply live. I welcome the chance to now do that in an immediate and personal way with Back At The Ranch. I look forward to meeting and hearing from you, the residents of this great community and helping you to continue to make this a monthly publication you can participate in and be proud

of. Feel free to send me story ideas, potential community news items, or anything else that you think has a place in your hometown newspaper. You can reach me by email at mike@fountain-inc.com. And now for our July issue. The kids are out of school, the temperature is rising, traffic is picking up on the I-5 and Via de la Valle in Del Mar and I’m spending way too much time at nearby softball fields (my daughter is an all-star fastpitch softball player). Yep, summer is in full swing in my corner of the world and it’s time to be outdoors enjoying the many activities that make this one of the most enjoyable times of the year. As a kid, I spent summers sleeping in, watching television game shows, arranging sandlot baseball games, biking to friends’ homes to go swimming and anxiously waiting for the time to come for me to spend a week or two or three with my grandparents. Nowadays, summer pursuits keep me closer to home and eager to make the most of each day with my two kids and my wife who is off from her work as a school administrator for a few weeks. Like many of you, we’ll be taking an annual trip to the San Diego County Fair, enjoying some “geek time” at the San Diego Comic-Con and generally savoring a slightly slower pace to our normal hectic schedules. Judging from the number of intriguing activities taking place in and around 4S Ranch, I expect many of you will be out enjoying the joys of summer as well. Perhaps you’ll spread out a soft blanket and catch a summer movie in the park under the stars. If you’re like our family spotlight this month, maybe summer means a chance to pursue more active pursuits like biking, jogging, hiking or swimming. Whatever keeps you busy during these warm, middle months of the year, we hope you have a wonderful time.

on your doorstep Adrenaline All-American Game MVP Congratulations go out to 4S Ranch resident Jack Yeatman. The recent graduate from Rancho Bernardo High earned MVP honors in the Adrenaline All-American Game played last month. Yeatman finished a great year with 5 goals in the game that matched two teams comprised of many of the best local lacrosse players. The youngest of the sports-minded and extremely talented Yeatman family, featured in Back At The Ranch back in February, will play at Providence College in the fall. As for the game itself, the South, coached by Jono Zissi and Dan Meehan, defeated the North team, coached by Jesse Foss and Mario Waibel, 17-13. RB Goalie Caleb Pryle also participated in the game. Pryle will continue his career at VMI in the fall.

on your doorstep Animal Rescue Groups Working Hard But Need Help Frederica Ginsburg has lived in the Santaluz neighborhood for five years now and has never written a letter to the editor before. But after seeing information on the dire situation of animals in desperate need of adoption, the local resident decided she need to act. Here is what she wrote to Back At The Ranch: Everyday, many animals held at high kill shelters are placed on the euthanasia list, and by using Facebook pages, organizations like “Friends of Freddie” and “Petconnect.us” have been networking and helping rescue groups actively rescue as many animals as possible from those shelters. It is an example of the power of social media saving lives of death row animals everyday.

So, if you are planning on adopting a pet, or if you know of anyone, please consider looking at one of the pets at the shelter. You can do that by visiting “Friends of Freddie” or “PetConnect.us” via Facebook. Transportation is not an issue and can be arranged to San Diego or other locations, or contact one of the rescue groups. If you are not ready to adopt, please consider helping these fur babies by pledging or fostering, as some will be PTS today. Please “reshare” on your Facebook page as someone you know may be able to help a shelter animal or find them a forever home. You may just find your best pal ever!

Local non-profit San Diego rescue organizations, like “The Animal Pad”, “The Barking Lot”, “Open Arms Rescue”, “Upward Dog Rescue”, “Second Change Dog Rescue” and even other organizations from around the country (and from Canada), have spared no money and time, trying to save some of these pets from high kill shelters. With the help of individual pledges and the rescue groups; pullers, transport and fosters are the last resort for these animals, which in many instances have been abused and neglected, or sadly just dumped by their original family or breeder after having its puppies taken away.

Additionally, rescue groups are always accepting donations for the following items: · Food · Puppy Pee Pads · Flea Control Meds · Dog Beds · Treats/Chewies · Leashes, Collars and Harnesses · Toys · Crates/Cages/Pens/Doggy Fencing/Baby Gates.

In most cases, each animal is given only three days to be adopted or rescued and in many occasions less (if they get sick with kennel cough or something else). If the shelter is running at full capacity, they will PTS earlier. It is a race against time to share the information online and hope that enough pledges and a rescue group will come in time to save these poor animals.

But two special events this month may appeal to a more discerning crowd. On July 2, the “Senior Monday” event features “The Amazing Journey of Lewis & Clark.” The first Monday of the month, seniors 65+ enjoy the Science Center exhibits, lecture and an IMAX film for only $7! Stagecoach Days: Celebrating The West On The Move Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is celebrating travel and transportation in the era of real horsepower at Stagecoach Days from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays in July and August. The free event features a different theme each Saturday including Californio Day, Women of the West, Soldiers and Citizens, TwainFest and Vaquero Day. Attendees will enjoy afternoons filled with activities that reflect life in early San Diego and celebrate the West on the move. Through vignettes, demonstrations, living history activities, stories and songs, visitors will gain an appreciation for early modes of transportation and daily life. It’s been more than a century since the last stage line operated in San Diego. Beginning in 1857, stage lines passed through rural San Diego moving passengers, freight and mail. These new services helped bring the outside world closer to the emerging frontier community that we know today as San Diego. The 2012 Stagecoach Days schedule is as follows: July 7 – West on the Move - After the Mexican War, more and more settlers came to San Diego as a place to live or as a resting point prior to heading to the gold fields of Northern California. Today, California State Parks will present demonstrations and activities that promote 19th century transportation. July 14 – Californio Day – From 1821 through 1848, the people who lived in Southern California were called “Californios” rather than Mexicans. Those unique “Californio” cultural activities such as gambling and paper flower making will be presented.

pag e 8 : ba ck at th e ra nch

July 21 – Women of the West – Women played an important part in the development of the West. Some of the daily activities of these women will be demonstrated on this Saturday. July 28 – Games and Amusements – In the 1800s, games and amusements were commonly associated with large celebrations that incorporated most of the local townspeople. This day will pay tribute to traditional games of the time. August 4 – Trades That Shaped Westward Expansion – As towns developed in the West so did the need for specialized trades and artisans. Old Town San Diego will present pivotal 19th century trades that shaped the community of San Diego. August 11 – Vaquero Drive – Cattle was the single most important economic resource for Southern California for more than 50 years. This day will give the opportunity to learn about the hide and tallow trade, chuck wagon cooking, roping, branding, saddle making and more. August 18 – TwainFest – The festival marks 102 years of Mark Twain’s passing and celebrates the American author as well as some of his peers. Excerpts from famous works will be read aloud by costumed San Diego actors at a variety of park venues throughout the day. August 25 – Soldiers and Citizens – In the mid-1840s, California went to war with Mexico. United States troops were stationed in San Diego County and fought here in an effort to support the war. This day will feature military practices that changed San Diego forever. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, with the support of the Boosters of Old Town and Fiesta de Reyes, is proud to offer these free activities for adults and children of all ages. The park is located on San Diego Avenue and Twiggs Street, conveniently located next to the Old Town Transit Center with Coaster, trolley and MTS bus service. on your doorstep San Diego Residents Place Education and Learning as a Top-Priority for Our Future – Our Greater San Diego Vision Survey Shows Balanced Responses to the Importance of Education and Learning for a Successful Region Preliminary results from The San Diego Foundation’s Our Greater San Diego Vision survey showed a balanced response to the importance of a successful future for San Diegans in the area of education and learning. Education was very important across all demographics with little difference between gender, ethnic or geographical lines. Reporting from racial groups supporting early childhood education was strong across the board with 83% approval from of Hispanic, African American and Asian respondents, and 73% Caucasians ranking this as Important or Extremely Important. “San Diegans were offered a number of scenarios regarding the importance to successful future of education and learning,” said Bill Geppert, Chair of Our Greater San Diego Vision. “The responses showed passionate support by all San Diegans about goals for education and learning over the next 40 years.” There was a slight generational deviation in the level of support for some educational issues. Clearly, younger people felt stronger about early childhood education and educating parents on how to prepare children for school. Specifically, the survey showed a strong response from younger San Diegans in support of all children receiving pre-kindergarten education, with 85% of top-priority responses from the 18 to 34 age group. This was followed by 77 % support from the 35 to 54 age group, and 70% of responses from those aged 55 and over. All ages agreed on using technology to expand learning options, with 80% of positive responses from those aged 18 to 34 and respondents aged 35 to 54. 77% of people over the age of 55 supported an increased focus on technology in the classroom. Paula Cordeiro, Professor and Dean, School of Leadership and Education Sciences at the University of San Diego, noted, “The survey results provide a valuable framework that we can use to identify the specific programs and initiatives needed to make San Diego a national leader in education in the 21st century, particularly in the areas of early childhood education and using

technology to enhance learning.” In the category of “learners have opportunities to develop workplace success skills including critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, and communication skills,” responses included 87% from the 18 to 34 age group, 86% from people 35 to 54, and 88% from individuals 55 and over. Bob Kelly, president and CEO of The San Diego Foundation stated, “The survey results cut across all demographics and clearly demonstrate that people in our community want a future where each child is taught in the way that he/she learns best. The community also recognizes the role of technology in learning, and encourages decision makers to use this to connect learners with one another, as well as teachers and parents.” The survey also showed significant support for preparing individuals to be well-informed and actively engaged in civic and political matters and enabling individuals to participate effectively in a dynamic global economy, both of which received a 31.5% response as the top priority after those previously mentioned. The ShowYourLoveSD.org survey generated more than 30,000 responses from San Diegans, representing diverse demographics including age, ethnicity, religion and geography. The survey generated more than 71,000 individual modules regarding issues ranging from education, community and cultural amenities, jobs and economic growth, to future land use and planning scenarios for San Diego. The completed Our Greater San Diego Vision document will be presented in mid-July 2012, at which time The San Diego Foundation’s newly formed Malin Burnham Center for Civic Engagement will convene to evaluate the results, engage business, government and community partners, and serve in a catalytic role for community problem-solving, civic education, leadership training, and policy analysis. “This vast array of voices,” said Kelly, “deeply encourages us as we build a strong and vital Our Greater San Diego Vision.”

meet your neighbor Conner Khodabande Conner Khodabande – a 16-year-old 4S Ranch resident and La Jolla Country Day School Senior – is off on an adventure this summer. And, this time he is raising money and bringing awareness to Youth Homelessness in America. Conner and his dad Jeff are “Biking across America” – a 3,000-mile bicycle ride from San Diego to Washington, DC that began on Saturday, June 16 – Father’s Day weekend. The route touches 12 states and climbs over 100,000 feet and is 50 percent longer in mileage than the Tour de France. Each day, Conner and Jeff will ride an average of 80 miles. This is sure to be a life changing experience for the entire family. Conner has teamed with San Diego Youth Services (SDYS) – a nonprofit organization here in San Diego to raise money. His goal is to raise $10,000! One hundred percent of donations will be donated directly to the San Diego Youth Services organization. SDYS is a non-profit charitable organization that since founded, has stabilized the lives of over 500,000 homeless, runaway, abused and at-risk youth in the San Diego area. Launched in 1970, when volunteers established one of the first runaway youth shelters in America, SDYS now provides intensive services to more than 12,000 children and their families each year. This nationally recognized agency offers emergency services, safe places to live and long-term solutions for kids “on their own” by providing shelters, group homes, foster homes, community centers and transitional housing. According to his family, Conner is a 16-year-old outgoing, adventurous and “no-limit” kid from San Diego. A guy who is never afraid to try something new. The best part, Conner, already knows the importance of

helping his community. In the past, he has raised money to buy toys for the children at the Polinkski Center, a child abuse center. He has collected and sorted food for the San Diego Food Bank, hosted a musical performance and handed out valentines at a local nursing home, served food at a local shelter, purchased gifts during the holidays for children that are less fortunate - the list goes on. Conner’s inspiration, motivation and attitude far exceed his 16 years – he is a great role model for other young adults. “I’m doing this ride because I know how much my parents love and support me and I want to make sure every child feels safe and confident. I hope you follow our journey across America to bring awareness of ‘Teen Homelessness in America!’” Connor’s father Jeff is an avid cyclist – always enjoying rides with friends and family. For many years, he dreamt of the opportunity to someday ride with his son across the United States. This summer, that dream is becoming a reality. For Jeff, the best part is that father and son started this Father’s Day weekend – 2012. In addition, Connor’s brother Jordan, a wonderful photographer, will capture the family’s adventure on film. Interested community members can follow the pair’s progress on Twitter and Facebook. Connor’s mom Trudy will be handling much of the driving, cooking, navigating and making sure everyone is getting enough fluids. The Khodabande family says they are looking forward to spending quality time together and meeting different people along the way. Proud that their sons, Conner and Jordan, wanted to raise money for Youth Homelessness in America, both Jeff and Trudy want to emphasize how important it is for young adults to be aware of the community, country, and the world we live in. To learn more about the riders, the route, the progress Connor and Jeff are making, visit their website at www.journeyforthehomeless.com.

school news Del Sur Elementary School Principal’s Message – Doug Johnson About this time of year, parents begin to give thought to who their child’s teacher might be the following year. I would like to explain the process we use for placing students into classes. In early June, I held lengthy meetings with each grade level team to begin the process of making initial placements into classes. Our resource specialist is a part of each placement meeting. The Poway Unified School District has as its Core Mission, “All Students Learning”. To realize this value and achieve the best result for the maximum number of students, our school district subscribes to the practice of heterogeneously grouping students. Research into students’ learning supports the practice of creating classes that are relatively balanced with high, average, and low achiever, boys and girls, etc. Our goal is to create classes that are as equal as possible. The following criteria will be used to create “balanced” or heterogeneous classes: • Equal class sizes with no more than • Balanced boy/girl ratios 28 children in grades K–3 and 35 in • Balanced distribution of student grades 4–5 abilities • Separation of students that have a • Balanced distributions of stuhistory of not working well together dents with identified learning • The nature of the teacher, i.e., their problems or special needs specialized training, skills, interests, or • The clustering of identified presentation style. business highlight Sentry Financial Partners – Kelly Newell

For Kelly Newell, trust and credibility lie at the crux of his business’ success. The 4S Ranch resident has long maintained that his primary responsibility as a financial advisor is to serve his clients’ best needs and to do that he must depend on the information he gathers in those one-on-one conversations that guide most monetary decisions for his customers. That belief is especially true in his work as a partner with Sentry Financial Partners in San Diego, a company he founded in 2009 along with four former colleagues from Merrill Lynch. Together, the team works with the goal of providing unbiased advice and guidance focused on one primary objective – to recognize that the client is the most important partner.

We are 4S Ranch's premier destination for top quality eyecare.

But Kelly didn’t always have a successful career in the financial services in mind. The local resident, who grew up in Valencia and whose first job came when he was 15 at Magic Mountain, entered San Diego State University in 1990 as a hopeful journalism student. After changing his major to political science, Kelly was all set to attend law school. While studying for his LSAT exam, Kelly interned at Smith Barney. He enjoyed the experience so much he decided to forgo a potential career in the field of law and instead decided to give the financial services industry a try. Looking back, it was a very sound decision. “I didn’t know what path of law I wanted to pursue,” Kelly admits about his decision not to continue on the lawyer track. “Now, I get to manage my own business. You don’t work less hours, but you do get to decide when you work. It’s great being able to drop my son off for school every morning.” Kelly’s son Ethan is 6 and is entering kindergarten at Monterey Ridge Elementary School. The youngest member of the Newell household played T-ball this season and, like his dad, enjoys the many parks in the neighborhood. Kelly’s wife Serena also will be experiencing a kindergarten classroom this fall – as a teacher in the San Diego Unified School District. Kelly and Serena will celebrate their 11th wedding anniversary in August. The Newells moved into the 4S Ranch community in fall of 2007, just three weeks before wildfires forced their evacuation from their brand new home. Despite that rough introduction, Kelly says the family couldn’t be happier with the connection they have built with the local community, their neighbors and other parents and staff at Ethan’s school. Kelly strives for a similar connection with his clients who come to him for financial advice and direction. The first meeting with a client typically begins with a pretty extensive interview about the individual’s present financial and life situation. Kelly’s professional experience with the financial industry includes a successful run with Merrill Lynch where he was Senior Financial Advisor and a Vice President before starting Sentry Financial Partners. Although no strategy ensures a profit or protects against potential loss, Kelly has developed unique strategies to help his clients reduce investment volatility and potentially protect future income. His company has also established a partnership with Home and Loan Finders (which advertises in Back At The Ranch), assisting home owners with re-financing home loans. In 2011, he earned the honor of the San Diego Magazine Top Wealth Manager Award. “It’s a long-term relationship for me with my clients,” Kelly shared. “I talk with them at least 12 times a year over the phone, in person, over lunch, or even out on the golf course. I try my best for every client. At the end of the day, it needs to be a partnership based on honesty and trust as we work together for the best for them and their family. I take that sense of trust very seriously. My biggest currency is my trust and reliability.” Sentry Financial Partners is located at 6310 Greenwich Drive in San Diego and online at www.sentry-financial.com
