The Light At The End Of The Tunnel May is the month where you catch a glimpse of summer over the horizon. The light at the end of the very long tunnel is blinking. It’s off in the distance, but there is this little twinkle that beckons you, maybe even dares you to start thinking about summer plans. Depending on what age your kids are, you either get excited at the prospect of having the kids out of school or you get into “camp” mode. With a camp for every possible interest a kid may have, the task is both easy and difficult. It’s a weird place to be because there is so much to choose from that you end up second guessing yourself as to whether you have chosen the best camp for your child. No worries, kids love camp so you honestly can’t lose! I enjoy hearing what people have designed for their summer. I’m constantly asking, “What are you guys doing this summer?” I know lots of people’s plans, which for some reason to me is quite enlightening. It’s almost as if I am living vicariously through their vacations! You’d think I was going on all the vacations. Living vicariously through others is quite a bit cheaper and, if you have a vivid imagination like I do, it works great! Since I love to travel, I especially love hearing when people visit places outside of California, more specifically, places outside of the USA. One of my favorite travel stories thus far...................my cousin has a best

friend whose husband can be quite eccentric. Let’s call him “Bob.” Bob has decided that he wants to learn how to sculpt. Most of us would find a class somewhere in the near vicinity and go twice a week to our little onehour sculpting class and come home every night with a little blob of clay that looks remotely like the bust of Julius Caesar. But no, not Bob. Bob decided to rent an apartment in Tuscany (the Tuscany in Italy) for three months and hire a private sculpting teacher. There is a Neapolitan slang phrase “biatta a esse” which loosely translated, means “lucky for him.” It’s really hard to get across the true meaning that goes with the slang. Neapolitans can be so darned funny, but trust me, it’s an appropriate phrase and, seriously, ...........LUCKY FOR HIM! The truth is that my family has been on some pretty wonderful vacations. There is no need for my vicarious living. God bless my husband for putting up with all my travel revelations. One time I jokingly pointed out that I would never have crown molding because we spend all our money on travels. A good friend of mine was present when I said this and responded with: “Crown molding is a tangible addition to your house, traveling with your family is a priceless memory you add to your hearts.” Sigh, my friend is pretty wise. Whatever your plans are, I hope they are more of an addition to your heart and not your house. Enjoy!

on your doorstep Sonya Wrisley Named Principal Of “School 39” Like most of you with kids at Oak Valley, I received a “Special Announcement” in my inbox from the school. “What’s this?” I wondered as I clicked on it. It was a letter from Sonya Wrisley, the fabulous leader of OVMS. Rather than explain what I read, I’ve decided to reprint the email here, in case you have not had the time to read it. Dear Oak Valley Parents, I have some good news, though it is also bittersweet. This morning, Dr. Robertson, Associate Superintendent of Learning Support Services, and I announced to my faculty and staff that I will be recommended to the Board of Education as the principal of the new K-8 school, currently referred to as “School 39”. The school will be located immediately north of Del Norte High School. This assignment will become effective July 1, 2012. I opened Oak Valley in 2005, and the past seven years have been wonderful. I am very sad to leave the Oak Valley family! However, it is a great honor to be asked to open yet another new school in this area, and I look forward to planning and developing a school that will serve children from grades K-8. I very much appreciate the support given to me by the Oak Valley parent community and feel very proud of the ways the Oak Valley school community has worked together in so many positive ways to benefit our students. Warmly, Sonya Wrisley Principal, Oak Valley Middle School Our Mission: Students are at the heart of Oak Valley, and meeting their needs is our first priority! It truly is a win-win situation because even though Sonya will no longer be the principal of OVMS, she will remain in the community as principal of “School 39”. Sonya Wrisley is a highly respected educational leader. She is a pacesetter, a visionary and she very much enjoys a new challenge. It’s this very thinking that has made OVMS the top middle school in the Poway District and it’s this very thinking that landed her the job at School 39. All candidates were called into the district office to learn whether or not they had been named to the position, but Sonya came away the winner and in

her own humble way, simply said “Wow, thank you.” She’s excited about the great new challenge and is thrilled that they had the confidence in her to do it all over again. Sonya will be sorely missed at OVMS. And likewise she will be quite sad to say goodbye. Her term ends on June 30. Sonya has begun the process with the district to select the new principal. One should be named no later than May 30. The new principal will undoubtedly uphold the incredible reputation of the school – a reputation that has parents coming from far and wide to try and get their kids into the school. On July 1, Sonya will pull up a chair at the district office and roll up her sleeves as she begins the exciting two-year adventure of designing “School 39”. Sonya will work closely with Superintendent Collins and the architects throughout the two-year process. The school will be a unique combination of K through 8th grade. It is slated to be a school of the future with plans to operate on an innovative level, or, as Sonya puts it, “do things in a different way than we do now. We still teach school the way we did 100 years ago. We need to prepare kids for today’s world.” Her job will begin with a great deal of research. She’ll visit other visionary schools such as High Tech High and High Tech Middle as well as Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad. Because the school will house such a wide range of ages, it presents its own set of challenges and this too will be worked into the research. The school will relieve much overburdened Stone Ranch Elementary, Monterey Ridge Elementary and Oak Valley Middle all in one fell swoop. Del Sur Elementary is also growing by leaps and bounds - the new school will help slow their growth as well. Sonya is excited at the prospect of getting everyone involved and is looking forward to sharing ideas with the community. Look for news about community forums, coffees and presentations. Sonya says that right now “This is totally just this really big dream.” Best wishes for the new school Sonya. Let’s all get busy thinking about how to help Sonya create the school of the future right here in our community!

Autism Walk To Take Place May 20 My name is Max Utter and I am the 16-year-old brother of Sam Utter, a child with Autism. Sam’s condition has inspired me to organize a charity event to help him and others with Autism. The event is an annual half-mile walk in 4S Ranch (Rancho Bernardo). This year’s event is scheduled for Sunday May 20 at 11 am at the 4S Ranch Community Park at the corner of 4S Ranch Parkway and Dove Creek Road (16118 4S Ranch Parkway) next to the 4S Ranch Boys and Girls Club. In our fourth year, we are expanding our efforts to contact residents and businesses to raise funds for Autistic children. One half of all of the donations will be used to help children with autism attend The Autism Society of America’s “Camp I Can”. The Autism Society of America is the largest charity supporting children with autism in the United States. “Camp I Can” is a summer camp designed specifically for children with autism to give them an opportunity to learn, grow, and enjoy a summer camp experience like their typical peers. The other half of the funds raised will be given to groups dedicated to early intervention programs, which can counter the effects of Autism before it gets very far. Our goal this year is to raise more than $5,000, and to contact 50,000 people on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and YouTube. To demonstrate vispag e 6 : ba ck a t th e ra n ch

ible appreciation for our donors that make larger contributions, we will display their names on a poster at our walk. We will list donors in the categories of: Diamond for donations of $1,500 or more

Platinum for donations of $250 or more

Opal for donations of $750 or more

Silver for donations of $50 or more

Ruby for donations of $1,000 or more

Sapphire for donations of $500 or more

Gold for donations of $100 or more

Bronze for donations of $25 or more

To donate for the Camp I Can Fund, go online to: https://app.etapestry. com/hosted/SanDiegoAutism/OnlineDonation.html and don’t forget to mention that it is for Max’s Walk. That way the money will go right to the Camp I Can fund! You will receive a receipt from the Autism society for your tax-deductible donation. Please help us in our effort to send kids to Camp I can because, if you donate, we can help brighten the lives of children with autism. It has been said that life is not measured by the number of breaths you take but by the moments that take your breath away. Together, we can help children with autism experience the thrill of “having their breath taken away” this summer! www. backattheranch-online.c om

on your doorstep Del Norte KIN Club Fundraiser Follow-Up Last month we ran a story about an inspiring young woman named Katrina Stapleford who founded the Do Something Del Norte KIN Club - a humanitarian club that seeks to engage teenagers in charitable efforts. The clubs two most recent events just wrapped up with 20,240 packaged meals for hungry kids and 1,306 pairs of jeans for homeless teens. Here is the recap written by Katrina herself. Thanks to Kat and to all the Del Norte students and local businesses for stepping up to help the less fortunate youth of our world. Feed A Child, Save A Life Food Packaging Event - Do Something Del Norte KIN Club & Friends and Family Community Connection (FFCC) Del Norte High School’s KIN Club recently successfully hosted the school’s first annual Food Packaging Event supporting the club’s mission of inspiring students to serve others while helping “kids in need,” both locally and globally. The “Feed A Child, Save A Life” Food Packaging Event had a two-fold goal and benefit: Simply, it engaged Del Norte students and community members in volunteerism and community activism in an effort to help save the lives of children who are at risk due to hunger and hungerrelated issues. A total of 340 student volunteers (approximately 22 percent of the student population at Del Norte High School) worked together measuring, mixing and packaging ingredients including soy, rice, dehydrated vegetables, chicken flavoring and a vitamin/ mineral packet to create highly-fortified, nutritious meals. In just 90 minutes, the students worked together in assembly-line fashion packaging 20,240 of these meals for children in need. Approximately 3,000 of these will be distributed to school counselors and teachers for distribution to the families of local youth, while the remaining 17,240 meals will be sent to dorms in Tanzania, Africa and orphanages in Haiti. The meals are scheduled to be shipped in May and will be distributed this summer. KIN Club Vice-president, Brandon Burrows will be traveling to Tanzania in June and will have the opportunity to work with the children that these meals will benefit. KIN Club Founder and Co-president, Katarina Stapleford explained, “Our intent with this event was to expose Del Norte students to a project that had guaranteed measurable results, had specific hands-on tasks for the volunteers to do and was fun – all while being done in an effort to help and feed others! Our hope is that the ‘spirit of giving’ will continue in these students’ personal lives, after experiencing that rewarding feeling of pride and inspiration that comes from volunteering.” Katarina continued to describe why KIN Club chose a food packaging event as the club’s premier volunteer project: “There are millions of children around the world that are living in crisis, including children here in San Diego. Things like food and clean water are human rights not privileges and our world has enough resources to feed these children and prevent them from dying from hunger-related issues. These easy-to-make meals are just one simple way we can make a difference and help sustain a child’s life. Hunger not only can result in starvation and death, but more commonly it also affects children with their ability to focus on their studies, and grossly weakens their immune systems causing other illnesses to take hold of their little bodies. Every child deserves a chance and providing a nutritious meal is one simple step.” The Del Norte Do Something: KIN Club raised over $5,000 to cover the event costs including the purchasing of the meal ingredients and shipping supplies and costs. The club received generous donations from Sprouts Markets and Nika Water, and also received a $2,500 matching gift from the Friends & Family Community Connection and recently was awarded a $500 “seed grant” from Do Something.org to support this project. w w w.ba cka tth e ra n ch - o nli ne .co m

Teens For Jeans Drive - Do Something Del Norte: KIN Club Collects 1,306 Pairs of Jeans For Homeless Teens The Do Something Del Norte KIN Club Teens For Jeans project collected an amazing total of 1,306 pairs of jeans for local homeless teens. The jeans drive ran for three weeks this spring and received an incredible amount of support from the Del Norte student body and the local community. Various outside businesses helped contribute to the club’s cause by setting up collection points in local offices and stores. Cymer Corporation and Sony Interactive in Rancho Bernardo involved their employees, and stores such as Starbucks in Carmel Mountain and Dream Dinners in Poway also helped collect jeans for the student group. The effort was part of a national campaign coordinated by Do Something.org. Thousands of schools nationwide participated, and Del Norte High School came in as one of the top schools in the country in collecting the most jeans. DNHS was ranked out #29 out of 12,800 schools that ran a drive.

About KIN Club.......... Do Something Del Norte: KIN Club is a student-organized club. It started this fall on the DNHS campus and has over 180 student members who have come together to make a difference while working on projects that offer basic necessities, hope and optimism to “Kids In Need.” Although we are a new school club, in seven short months, we have become the largest and most active one on the Del Norte campus. So far we have successfully implemented six service project programs and have provided over 1,250 volunteer hours of service to our community. Do Something Del Norte: KIN Club is part of the local Friends & Family Community Connection (FFCC) high school club outreach and receives support and mentoring from FFCC Coordinators.

NEGU, which stands for ”Never Ever Give Up,” is the motto and message of Jessie Joy Rees, a caring 12-year-old girl who was diagnosed with inoperable brain tumors in March, 2011. After her seventh round of chemotherapy, Jessie vowed to “Never Ever Give Up” and to encourage other children battling cancer to NEGU. Now, courageous teen athletes are carrying her message to NEGU™ to other courageous kids. Players ages 12 – 14 will participate in six tournament-style games from 11:30 to 6:00 pm. All athletes will play in honor of a child battling cancer with the patient’s name and photo taped to their lacrosse helmet. Participants and spectators are encouraged to bring new and unused toys to be included into JoyJars™ that will be delivered to children battling cancer. “JoyJars™ are one way the NEGU Foundation helps encourage courageous kids”, explains NEGU president and founder, Erik Rees. “We fill JoyJars™ with toys and fun items and deliver them to children who are hospitalized and fighting cancer.” According to Rees, JoyJars™ were inspired by his daughter Jessie. While undergoing radiation and chemotherapy at Children’s Hospital Orange County (CHOC), Jessie made it known that her wish is to send JoyJars™ to every kid in America who is fighting cancer – all 50,000+ of them! Jessie died on January 5, 2012 but her message and wish lives on. “Jessie was just a little younger than me when she died,” said 14-yearold event organizer, Ian Ross. “I think it’s really cool that we can play sports and do what we enjoy in such a way that it will benefit others and help make Jessie’s wish a reality.”

About The NEGU Foundation: Founded in March, 2011, the NEGU Foundation was inspired by Jessie Rees, who lost her fight with two inoperable brain tumors on January 5, 2012. OVMS Direct Ask Campaign With the 2012 school year quite underway and just about over, the Oak Valley Falcon Foundation still has goals to achieve. We have had such a great year already with the Direct Ask and the Fall Oktoberfest generating enough money to buy a Mobile iPad lab. The Foundation had a chance to thank its wonderful donors with a Donor Reception at the Ranch House in Del Sur. The celebratory event pag e 8 : ba ck at th e ra nch

was attended by Superintendent Dr. John Collins, Principal Sonya Wrisley, teachers, and our generous donors. We were able to showcase our Mobile iPad lab and discuss the educational benefits of this technology. With close to 1,400 students enrolled at Oak Valley, the Foundation is planning on another Direct Ask this spring to purchase an additional iPad lab. We need the participation of every family. For those who have already given, we sincerely thank you! on your doorstep Saavy Interiors of San Diego Receives Houzz’s 2012 ‘Best Of Remodeling’ Award Savvy Interiors of San Diego, California has been awarded “Best Of Remodeling” 2012 by Houzz, the leading online platform for residential remodeling and design. The interior design firm specializing in residential remodels and decor was chosen by the more than 1.2 million registered members of the Houzz community. The Houzz “Best Of Remodeling” award for 2012 is given in two categories: Customer Satisfaction and Design. Customer Satisfaction award winners are based on homeowner members who rated their experience working with remodeling professionals in 12 categories ranging from architects, and interior designers to contractors and other residential remodeling professionals. Design award winners’ work was the most popular among the 1.2 million members, also known as “Houzzers,” who saved more than 16.5 million professional images to their personal ideabooks via the Houzz site and iPad/ iPhone app. “We are thrilled that Houzz gives us designers a platform to inspire others, gives us visuals to help our clients personalize their own space and integrate technology into the design process,” said Susan Wintersteen, Interior Designer, Owner, Savvy Interiors. “With 3.5 million monthly unique users and 80 million monthly page views, Houzz has rapidly become the largest community of active remodelers, providing homeowners and design enthusiasts with first-hand advice from Houzzers who have been through the renovating and decorating process,” said Liza Hausman, vice president of marketing for Houzz. “This is a real stamp of approval for Savvy Interiors from the Houzz community and we’re thrilled to welcome them to this elite group of ‘Best Of ’ winners.” With Houzz, homeowners can identify not only the top-rated professionals like Susan Wintersteen, but also those whose work visually aligns with their own design goals. Homeowners can also evaluate professionals by contacting them directly on the Houzz platform, asking questions about their work and evaluating their responses to questions from others in the Houzz community. Susan Wintersteen lives here in the 4S/Del Sur community. Savvy Interiors began when Wintersteen started tapping into her talent for interior design she likely inherited from her grandmother — a respected interior designer in Orange County. “It started with my passion for designing interior spaces — often in my own home — that grew into working for friends and neighbors with remodeling, updating and renovating,” said Wintersteen, who has five daughters, ages 8 to 18, with husband John. Now, with nearly 10 years experience, Savvy is a full service interior design business, offering a wide range of interior design services. Savvy Interiors offers clients a unique combination of value, service and experience in creating home environments that look great, without the expensive price tag. “The value we provide to our clients comes from a comprehensive approach for almost any budget,” said Wintersteen. “We offer everything from flooring to furniture, from paint color to fabric — with the unique ability and expertise to ensure that it’s all cohesive. meet your neighbor Olivia Gastaldo - Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s “Girl of the Year Olivia is a born and raised San Diego native. Perhaps you read about her in our March issue when she headed up a fundraiser in support of the very organization that is responsible for saving her life: The Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. She has since been named “Girl of the Year by the society and she does not take this honor lightly. “Being Girl of the Year is a great honor and I feel so blessed that I have the opportunity to share my story and inspire others to get involved with Leukemia Lymphoma Society, said the inspirational teenager. Olivia is an amazing young lady whose positive attitude and nerves of steel rocketed her through the most dreadful of circumstances - a battle against cancer. As a child, Olivia and her family lived in North Park, but moved to Rancho Bernardo when she was five years old. It’s not a surprise that Olivia loves the beach, she surfs a bit and also enjoys snorkeling, but what she mostly loves doing is hanging out with her friends. She has a lot of very dear friends that she has known practically her whole life. Olivia also plays competitive volleyball and loves music and singing. Now 15 years old and a sophomore at Del Norte High School, she is a three-sport athlete playing volleyball, soccer and swim. Only five years ago, Olivia was a way-too-young 10 years old when she found out she had cancer. She was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) on July 6, 2006. On a family trip to New York, she began getting major leg pains but no one took it seriously. “She’s a growing kid - it’s probably growing pains. But on their return trip home, the pains

became unbearable and she could barely walk. At Rady Children’s Hospital they discovered that her white blood cell count had all but exploded and it was here that she was handed her CML diagnosis. Olivia has never been one to shy away from problems and she was not about to change that attitude now. “I wasn’t scared, I knew I could handle it, I was more afraid for my family, she says. When she finally did cry, it was only because one of her best friends broke down and sobbed. After much trial and tribulation the medical staff was unable to lower her white blood cell count. Finally, her doctor (whom the family adores) decided she was a perfect candidate for a new drug called Gleevec. The family held their collective breath as Olivia began her treatment on Gleevec. Tears of joy replaced feelings of despair as the family was told her white blood cell count had come back to normal. Her white blood cell count has remained normal and Olivia will have to take the drug her entire life, but when a miracle stares you in the face, it’s hard to feel bitter. In fact, Olivia is the complete opposite of bitter. She’s grateful and humbled by the entire experience. She feels completely indebted to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society and continues to champion causes to raise funds for the organization. If you wish to support Olivia in her efforts, please visit http://www.lls.org or go to www.nighthawks.com and click on “Olivia’s Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Fundraiser - Halfway there! on the front page. Olivia is not your typical cancer survivor, in fact in her own words, “My story will not end with ‘I was a cancer survivor,’ my story will end with ‘I made people aware’. Looking ahead, Olivia hopes to start a Leukemia/Lymphoma Club at Del Norte next year. She is also looking forward to attending “Camp Reach For the Sky in Julian this summer. It’s a super fun camp specifically designed for children from ages eight to eighteen who have or have had cancer. It’s a weeklong adventure filled with real camping activities such as swimming, archery, canoeing, wall climbing, hiking and campfires. Olivia has been going every year since she discovered she had cancer and she wouldn’t miss it for the world! If you want more info, visit their website at www.CR4TS.org. The skies the limit for Olivia, her future looks bright and we wish her all the best!

Your additional efforts really paid off, and we thank you! Again, all labels submitted were added to your classes’ “April Showers” contest count.

If you have not yet returned your form, please do so ASAP. Thanks in advance for helping us get a head start on planning for registration for next school year. pag e 16 : ba ck a t th e ra nch

school news Oak Valley Middle School Reminder………. May 28 – Memorial Day (No School) June 7 – 8th Grade Promotion @ 9 am June 7 – Last Day of School (Min. Day – dismiss @ 12:28)

Recognition

After School Reminder This is an important reminder for all Falcons! After school all students should be off the campus by 3:10 pm unless you go to Choice, Homework Club, Math Tutorial or Organization Club. If you do not attend any of these, please make sure you are leaving campus in a timely manner. If you are going to one of the clubs, you must remain there for the entire hour.

Bike/Scooter/Skateboard Safety Expectations for riders of wheeled vehicles are changing to ensure the safety of all our students. Starting Monday following Spring break, riders of any skateboards, scooters or bikes will have to ride along the sidewalk to the front of the school. Once they get to the short sidewalk that goes to the front parking lot, they will dismount and push/carry their vehicle all the way to the bike/scooter rack and skateboard cage. This will be reversed for afternoon dismissal. The entire bus loop will then be off limits so there will be no riding on the blacktop where kids are gathering/playing before school.

OVFF Board Openings for 2012-2013 The OVMS Falcon Foundation has several openings for the 20122013 board. If you are interested or know of someone who might be, please contact Kirsten Black at kirstenblack68@aol.com

Lynne Lesh OVMS Classified Employee Of The Year Congratulations to Lynne Lesh, Counseling Assistant for being selected Oak Valley’s Classified Employee of the Year. “Lynne has so many responsibilities and makes changes daily to our Genesis. She never complains, is pleasant, and does it graciously. Every day she is faced with challenges, and yet is prompt and accurate with schedule changes.”

Kirsten Black OVMS Volunteer Of The Year Congratulations to Kirsten Black, Oak Valley Falcon Foundation President, for being selected Oak Valley’s Volunteer of the Year. “Kirsten has been a huge help the past two years serving as Oak Valley Falcon Foundation President. The role itself is a major time commitment and Kirsten has cheerfully met this challenge day in and day out. Despite a tough economy, she has been unflappable coordinating volunteers and community partners to help raise funds for our staff and students. One would think that serving as Foundation President would be enough in itself; however, Kirsten also finds time to volunteer her time and resources in the classroom as well. Additionally, her smile, good humor and energy are infectious. It is because of these reasons and many more than Kirsten Black exemplifies what it means to be Volunteer of the Year.”

Martin Reisert DNHS PTSA The Del Norte PTSA is looking to fill some key PTSA positions for the 2012-2013 school year. If you will have a student at DNHS next year, come join a great group of parents and keep current with what is happening on campus. If you would like to get involved or for more information, contact Kathy Garriott at kgarriott@juno.com.

Staff Appreciation Week 2012 Oak Valley Middle School was selected to be a California Distinguished School in 2011. This was due to the dedication and hard work of our teachers and staff. Let’s make them feel special during Staff Appreciation Week on May 7-11. PTSA is making plans and needs volunteers to donate or assist. Please respond to Cindy Collins, ccollins310@cox.net, (858) 312-1250, for more details or to offer assistance.

pag e 18 : ba ck a t th e ra nch

OVMS Teacher Of The Year Congratulations to Martin Reisert for being selected Oak Valley’s Teacher of the Year. Martin was also chosen as one of Poway’s three district-wide Teachers of the Year. “Mr. Reisert brings to the classroom his vast knowledge of Science and Social Studies through his formal education and his world travel. Many days you can pass by his room and see him all dressed up in an outfit from the culture he is teaching about. There are artifacts that he’s gathered in his travels that he brings in for students to see and touch for themselves. Martin brings education ALIVE for students! Martin has tailor made his program for student success. The dramatic presentation of his lessons creates an “attention bubble” that captivates students. His refined lessons, coupled with PowerPoints, online notes, differentiated projects and tests connect students to what they are learning in a whole new way. Martin pours his heart into teaching, students and staff. Martin is the kind of guy that sees a need for assistance and dives into help. Whether it be flying to help people in Thailand after the Tsunami in 2004, helping create a foundation (Tehyathon) for one of his students with Spina Bifida, starting the recycling program at OVMS, helping people in Malawi, Africa…the list goes on. He’s as generous with his time, as he is with his wallet, and his huge heart.”

We are currently in the process of preparing for our new school year, 2012-2013, which involves class placement for our students. Since you are a wealth of information for us regarding your students, we encourage you to let us know what strengths, concerns, teaching styles, and any other information that you feel would help us in placing your students. Much consideration is taken when placing our students into classrooms. Our teachers collaborate with each other to find the right class for each student. We must be certain to balance all of our classrooms evenly. Keeping all of this in mind, we are not able to take any specific teacher preferences or requests from families for their students. Thank you for working with us on this task. We appreciate your support.

Oak Valley Falcon Foundation Direct Ask Campaign 2011-2012 Your child’s education is a priority at OVMS! Please consider making a donation to our Mid-Year “Direct Ask” Campaign. The cost is $30,000 and we need your help! We need the participation of every family. For those who have not yet given, please know that any amount makes a huge difference and is greatly appreciated. For those who have already given, we sincerely thank you!

6th Grade Parents: Immunization for entering 7th Grade Parents – In order to register for 7th grade, your child’s immunization will need to be up to date. Specifically, please be sure your child has had 2 MMR’s and the Tdap Booster.

Gardening for Hummingbirds and Butterflies It’s finally here. Spring has sprung and we can finally enjoy the height of the season. We can finally enjoy what we wait all year for: flowers. The abundance of flowers brings hummingbirds and butterflies. It’s such a joy to see these delightful creatures flying around the garden. These birds and insects are attracted to certain plants – those that you can purposely position in your garden. Hummingbirds need nectar from flowers daily. In fact, they will consume half their weight in nectar and insects each day. They suck the nectar out of tubular flowers using their curved beaks. Hummingbirds prefer red flowers, but will visit any flower that has nectar. Butterflies need nectar as well. Their tongue is not as long, so they rely on different plants than the hummingbirds. Because each plant has a different blooming and nectarproducing time, it is wise to plant plants with a variety of bloom times. That way, the hummingbirds and butterflies have nectar for a longer season. Plants that attract Hummingbirds: Abutilon Flowering Maple Arbutus unedo Strawberry Tree Campsis Trumpet Creeper Gladiolus Gladiola Heuchera Coral Bells Hibiscus Lantana Kniphofia Red Hot Poker Leonotis leonurus Lion’s Tail Mimulus Monkey Flower Pytostegia venusta Flame Vine Salvia Sage Butterflies are attracted to similar plants as those that attract hummingbirds. There are several different kinds of butterfly species that are local to this area. Each type has their favorite plant. For a complete list, see http:// www.laspilitas.com/butterflylist. In addition to nectar-producing plants, butterflies also enjoy water sources. This could be a fountain, your sprinkler system or even a puddle. They also like to have areas to rest away from wind. Plants that attract Butterflies: Achillea Arctostaphylos Buddleja davidii Ceonothus Chrysanthemum maximum Cosmos Echinacea purpurea

Echinops exaltatus Erythrina caffra Hebe Lavendula Lonicera Penstemon Rosmarinus officinalis Ranunculos Verbena tenuisecta

Globe Thistle Coral Tree Moss Verbena Lavender Honeysuckle Beard Tongue Rosemary Ranunculos

Some gardeners devote specific areas of their garden for hummingbirds and butterflies. One can try to attract them to an area that you see several times in a day, for instance out a kitchen window. The other tactic is to scatter these plants throughout your garden in hopes of seeing them anywhere in your yard. Whichever strategy you may choose, it’s worth a try. The site of these colorful creatures will stop you in your tracks and have you appreciating the beauty of nature..
