Issue 3 - The Blur Between Digitally Altered Photography and Art When creating this issue of Fotoblur Magazine I noticed that many of the images selected by the Fotoblur community were digitally manipulated. If you’ve been around photography long enough you’ll find that many question whether digitally altered photography has a rightful place in the photographic arts. What most of them fail to realize is that before the advent of digital photography, photos were altered using techniques such as double exposure, darkroom manipulations, and the use of paints and inks. The ideas are not new or unique to the digital process and have been around since the advent of photography. Why then has altered photography received such a negative reputation, especially when performed digitally? One of the main reasons has been its use in deceiving or persuading the public. For example, manipulated photos have been used in political propaganda, unethical photojournalism, and in popular culture, distorting reality, unbeknownst to the viewer. Digital manipulation has only made the task easier, especially since the tools required are powerful, easy to use, and readily available. Today, many photographic artists use the very same manipulation techniques throughout their work to communication ideas, unique visions, and

emotions which can only be achieved through the tweaking of pixels. So why shouldn’t these photo based images be considered photographic art? If done ethically, responsibly, and within the proper context I believe they can be. I feel that digitally altered photography, especially in the creation of art, should be considered a serious branch of photography and must no longer be treated with righteous indignity. As previously stated, some of the photos selected for this issue have obviously been digitally manipulated. However, you’ll find that they are amazing pictorials which reflect the highly creative imaginations of their respective artist. They convey both emotion and vision that are beyond our world. The Fotoblur community has once again done an excellent job in both submitting and selecting a collection of amazing photographs for this new issue of Fotoblur Magazine. In addition, I have the distinct pleasure of presenting the work of Jennifer Short, this issue’s featured photographer. In total, we have 37 photographers presenting 42 images for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy! - Lance Ramoth

Jennifer Short “I like to tell a story with each photograph. - JENNIFER SHORT

The creative process for me usually begins with a specific idea in mind. However, I remain flexible with all sessions, and have often detoured from my original plan. I try to learn the emotions, thoughts, and personality of each new model. Making a connection with the person and providing a comfortable experience is most important. I like to be unique with my ideas. I try to see the final photograph in my mind, even before I have finished.

Jennifer Short is an award winning photographer who runs her own portrait studio. She can be contacted by e-mail at jennifer@camasphotography.com. http://www.camasphotography.com | http://www.fotoblur.com/people/njsabs2323

Adrian Bradley http://www.fotoblur.com/people/nudibranches I started taking photos with an instimatic back in the early 1970s and “inherited” my dad’s pentax and el-cheapo Hanimax lens when he died in 1979. I then got into medium format film photography about fifteen years ago but life got in the way. I decided to get into digital four months ago and am finding the “new” photography challenging and exciting.

Byong-Ho (Brad) Kim http://photo.net/shared/community-member?user_id=496411 Born and raised in South Korea, I’m now a resident of Los Angeles County, California, since 1983. As a boy, I loved fine arts and studied painting for a number of years. Although becoming an artist was my dream, I pursued a career in business and economics. Upon retiring in 1997, my passion for the fine arts returned and I attended the New York Institute of Photography. My ultimate goal is to reach the hearts of the viewers.

Michael Vincent Manalo http://theflickerees.deviantart.com I love life. I want to remember every emotion that I’ve felt, the feelings that I’ve experienced, and the faces that I’ve seen. I would like to share these to the world too. That is what drew me to photography, unlike any other style of art, the photos that a photographer takes captures a moment which hopefully will forever be remembered. However, if I can’t find the perfect place or the perfect spot or if my subconscious tries to convey a much more deeper feeling, I try to create that world through digital art.
