I

Welcome to the NOVEMBER 2023 ISSUE of Greater Port Macquarie FOCUS.

t’s November.... if you are like me and LOVE Christmas and all that comes with it, you would be counting down the days until you can pop the christmas tree up and hang the lights! I can’t wait until I can have the carols playing in the office and organising Secret Santa, it’s honestly so exciting and really does bring so much joy. However, before all of that starts we must get through the 2nd last month of the year. I was super excited to bring you this month’s cover and help promote The Lion King prodution put on by La Vive Studios. We really are a town stacked with so much talent among our young people, whether it’s dance, sports or academic. A huge thank you to this month’s Behind the Lens, Callam

i Liz, you’re the Principal of La Vive Studio here in Port Macquarie, can you tell us about the school and when you took over?

Hello! Yes, and what an exciting ride it has been, I have been Principal of La Vive Studios for the past 4 years. Our school proudly stands as one of the pillars within our Performing Arts community with us seeing our 37th year of trading. Historically you may know our school as ‘La Vive Classique Academy of Dance’. We transitioned to ‘La Vive Studios’ roughly 7 years ago. This shift saw us integrating other aspects of creative learning including musical theatre, drama and singing, whilst continuing to have high quality, professional, nurturing education as our focus. Our styles of classes range from RAD Ballet, LGTDA Tap, Jazz, Contemporary, to Acrobatic Arts, Lyrical, Musical Theatre, Drama and Singing with both competitive and recreational classes on offer. Any ages, any abilities, all are welcome! How have things changed since you took the reins? What have been some of your goals for the school moving forward?

involved in their own way, what is the process like when putting it all together and incorporating different age groups and performance genres? Each of our classes work towards the end of year production, and with everyone involved across a multitude of ages it's certainly a task to coordinate them all together. I will take the storyline and then devise a schedule among our students based on age groups, genres and storyline continuity and then create our own storyline adapted from the main material - in this case it was The Lion King this year. Then our LVS team and I brainstorm ways to integrate each of the groups together seamlessly through good storytelling, teamwork and creative content. Why do you feel it’s important to bring everyone together into the one production? It's always been important to provide an inclusive environment where everyone can

showcase their talents and skills they’ve been working so hard on all year long. Not to mention, integrating age groups provides diverse variety and engaging entertainment, it's a special way to sew together a production. It's always such a special feeling for all involved when you get to the final stages of putting on a show. All the students are backstage getting ready and the curtain is down, our LVS Team and backstage crew are buzzing with anticipation, and an audience of excited friends and families. Everyone is there to either do what they love or watch who they love! It truly brings our school together, so everyone feels a part of the family.

make a difference! Our set production and lighting are all thanks to the mastermind creator Sean O’Brien from Innovate Event Solutions. Every year I task Sean with bigger and better things and this year has been no exception with me dreaming up our very own ‘Pride Rock’ set! Callam Howard from Lens Head Photography does a wonderful job capturing our special show, who we also have to thank for that AMAZING front cover photo. A dear friend and sounding board for me, always willing to go the extra mile for that special shot!

When and where can we see the show? Is it open to the public? Our show will be held at the Glasshouse, Port Macquarie on Friday the 17th of November. Yes it is open to everyone, we would love for our wider community to come and enjoy a night of live theatre! Where can people find more information or reserve tickets? For further information and ticketing questions call the Glasshouse Box Office on 6581 8888, visit their website www. glasshouse.org.au or visit our Instagram or Facebook ‘La Vive Studios’

Our wonderful creators and visionaries span far and wide but we would be nothing without our amazing LVS teachers. Callam Howard is a teacher turned photographer who is all about expanding, learning and growing in the areas he enjoys. He has developed a passion for photography, particularly capturing dancers and the performing arts, which is fitting given his career as a drama teacher. Callam is expanding his business Lens Head and has just purchased his own studio!

H

i Callam. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in photography?

I’m a High School Drama Teacher at St Clare’s in Taree and have always loved performance and theatre. In 2018 I was put in front of a Year 9 elective photography class, and I had never picked up a camera. I’ve always believed when teaching, you need to be an expert in the content you are delivering, you can’t just “wing it”, it is why you are there, to pass on your expertise and knowledge. Yet the students undoubtedly knew more than I did which became very clear as I awkwardly struggled to force a 50mm f/1.8 lens on an old Canon camera before a student said “You have to line the red dots up Sir”. From there, I set out to learn as much as possible, watching countless YouTube tutorials and experimenting with the camera as much as possible so I could create engaging lessons for my students. I then began to manage our school’s social media which included taking photos of all the school events and this offered

a number of opportunities to practise with the camera. I started getting enquiries from friends to photograph their events and now, five years on, I am leaving teaching at the end of this year to pursue photography full time. I’ve just purchased a studio in Taree and can’t wait to push the business forward in 2024. What drew you to the world of photography, and how do you feel you’ve evolved as a photographer over time?

together to capture the feel of a burlesque theatre stage and I would not have thought that would have been possible when I started.

I started photography in my 30’s so I felt like I was a bit late to the game with so many people pursuing it straight out of school so I am constantly looking to learn new techniques. I remember in my first year wanting to know more about flash and using strobes in the studio, so I booked a course in Sydney and was blown away with the results you could achieve and the creative freedom it offered. Since then, incorporating flash into my work has really elevated what I can produce and meet the vision of my clients. One of my last shoots had six strobes, a haze machine, gels, two backdrops and an optical spotlight all working

I’ve also gained a better appreciation for composition and an eye for light. Mundane locations that we pass everyday can become incredible photo opportunities if the light is falling on them at the right time and you experiment with a new composition. This always pushes me to break down lighting in other photographers works as well. I’ll often pause in the shopping centre to look at a fashion poster in the window of a dress shop and deconstruct how the photographer achieved that. I’m always looking to add to my tool kit and improve. Continued over... GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 25

I think once the studio starts up, I will really settle into doing more dance portrait work as we have so many talented dancers in the region...

In terms of cameras, I started on the Canon 5D Mark IV but have since moved to the R5 and worked it hard. I’d hate to know the shutter count. Paired with that, I have a mix of 5 lenses, both primes and zooms, and I find I switch it up often depending on which one will best communicate the story and vision of the job. The moment I really clicked with photography was one afternoon while watching a YouTube video explaining the importance of the lens. The difference each lens could make for expressing artistic ideas and communicating stories blew my mind and was such a key turning point in my photo journey. My passion for experimenting with different lenses and love for old vintage wares and antiques is how the ‘Lens Head’ brand came about. I think they look impractically good paired together and sum me up really well. I can’t say I have ever turned up to photograph an event in a rusty scuba helmet though.

For those aspiring to become photographers, what advice do you have for developing their skills and finding their unique style? Don’t invest in gear, invest in learning. I still have so much to learn and I’m constantly reaching out to people who shoot similar images and are masters at what they do. I’ve been so surprised to see how open photographers are to share their skills and knowledge. The connections I have made through a simple Instagram message to a stranger have taken me across the country to work with some amazing people. It’s a nice feeling after fourteen years of teaching to see that people are willing to share their expertise and pass on knowledge just as I have done for my students.

Where can people check out your work or get in touch? @lens.head callam@lenshead.com.au lenshead.com.au Thanks Callam. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 27

An innovative community for people living with dementia.

A

n innovative, game-changing approach to empowering and supporting people living with dementia will be the focus at Emmaus Village, currently under construction in Port Macquarie. St Agnes’ Catholic Parish secured grants from the NSW State Government and the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund to construct the innovative community. Based on best-practice models, and inspired by the world-leading model, The Hogeweyk®l in the Netherlands, it is a paradigm shift from the traditional model of dementia care to one which focuses on fostering the everyday normalcy of life and a caring and supportive community. Emmaus Village will be a purposebuilt, state-of-the- art village where people will live, meet, socialise, and share interests in a secure space that allows them to move freely while feeling at home.

Emmaus Village residents – known as Villagers – will reside in beautiful, modern houses accommodating up to eight people that have been created around residents’ specific needs. The village has meandering streets, gardens and a community centre at its heart with café, corner store, cinema, and music room along with other activity areas. St Agnes’ Catholic Parish CEO, Tony Leahy, believes those living with dementia deserve better support. “There is a significant local need to provide people living with dementia the opportunity to be supported and enabled to maintain the normalcy of daily life” Mr. Leahy said. “We hope to create an inspiring

and innovative community that delivers dignity, freedom and choice.” Co-located with the existing Emmaus Home on Colonel Barney Drive, the anticipated opening date for Emmaus Village is March 2024. Staff will play a pivotal role in shaping the day-to-day experiences of Villagers. Care staff, known as ‘Home Companions’, will support Villagers and have the flexibility to accommodate the natural rhythm of each day. St Agnes’ Catholic Parish will be recruiting people to work across a range of roles at the village. Information about Emmaus Village, including career opportunities, can be found at EmmausVillage.org.au.”

These are compounded with numerous other injuries sustained through a physically demanding, and at times quite dangerous career involving diving, roping from helicopters and parachuting. What sports did you each compete in and why did you choose them? Andy - I competed in wheelchair rugby, indoor rowing and cycling. I chose wheelchair rugby because when I first moved to Port Macquarie I became involved with two members of the Australian Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby team. This was the sport that originally sparked the change into the person I am now. I can safely say it's my favourite sport. I chose indoor rowing because after my amputation I became involved in rowing and entered the Australian Indoor Rowing Championships and was quite successful. I was hooked from then on. With cycling, I always loved cycling for fitness but I chose it for the games because I wanted to compete in a sport that I possibly wouldn't have thought about before the games. I've become really addicted to cycling as a competition. Ryan - My main sport was swimming, an activity I’ve been able to do even on my more challenging days. The assistance it gives 32 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

me in maintaining fitness, mobility and functionality is immeasurable. My team sport was seated volleyball, and the sport I’d never tried before was archery. How did you go? We hear you came home with a few medals between you!

I chose wheelchair rugby because when I first moved to Port Macquarie I became involved with two members of the Australian Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby team.

Andy - I won a bronze medal in wheelchair rugby, a gold in the 4 min row and silver with the 1 min row in indoor rowing. Unfortunately because of a complication with my residual limb I was medically withdrawn from the cycling. Ryan - The Australian team did great - and yes, some of us were fortunate enough to bring home something shiny! I won four gold and a silver - all in the pool. Our volleyball team advanced to the quarter finals where we were

beaten by Georgia. I made it through to the final round of 16 in the archery, where I fell short to a Polish archer who went on to take the gold.

What were some of your highlights from the Games? Andy - One highlight for me was during the medal ceremony for the 4min row. I received a kiss on the head by the person from the UK who came second, not just because one of our Alumni from the last Australian team asked him to, but because it really drove home the motto of the games which was "a home for respect". The biggest highlight for me though, was celebrating my wedding anniversary on

the day of the closing ceremony.

The healing power of sport and physical activity is so underestimated, and living this experience with Invictus reiterated to everyone that it really does have some incredible potential to facilitate positive change.

Ryan - For me, it was meeting people from all over the world who have similar backgrounds and are on similar journeys. The healing power of sport and physical activity is still underestimated, and living this experience with Invictus reiterated to everyone that it really does have some incredible potential to facilitate positive change, regardless of one’s medical circumstances. Being able to share all this with my partner Brandi, our children Kai, Koa, Quin and Cami, and my parents Bruce and Kerrie, meant so much. They’ve been pillars of strength for me in what’s been an extremely challenging time. Harry spoke to us frequently throughout the Games, in both an official capacity and also in social settings. One piece in particular from his speech at the closing ceremony will resonate with me always: “We may have provided the platform, but

you provided the magic, and don’t you ever forget that. We’ve all witnessed the true impact sport has had on your recovery and on your post-traumatic growth. But you will never truly know the impact your actions this week have had on millions of people around the world. You have opened people’s hearts, through your vulnerability, through your resilience and through your sheer abilities. You have shown us that joy can emerge from struggle, and for that, we are eternally grateful." What does the future hold for each of you? Would you participate in the Invictus Games again if you were given the opportunity? Andy - Myself personally, I've already participated in two games and there is a limit of two. Even if I was offered to do it again though, I would turn it down as it wouldn't be fair on someone who needed it more. The Games have done what they needed to do for me. I'm now a better version of myself and a better husband,

father and friend because of the experience. As for the future for me, there were sports that I wasn't involved in that I would love to get involved in. The Games have piqued my interest in sports that I haven't thought of before. Ryan - Having experienced my Invictus journey and appreciating what it has done for me, I look forward to seeing more of our current and ex-serving veterans participate in this incredible opportunity. Every iteration grows larger than the last and the next Games, set to be held in Vancouver in 2025, will see the introduction of even more countries and competitors as well as some adaptive snow sports. If given the opportunity, I’d love to move into a coaching or mentoring role with the hope to stay connected to Invictus, albeit in a different role, and with the aim of helping others with their healing and rehabilitation through the power of sport. Thanks guys. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 33

C

ongratulations on The Local. Firstly, let’s introduce you all to our readers?

Thank you for the warm congratulations! We are James and Maddison Kelly, Matthew and Kelly Shipway and Jeremy Latimore. The Shipways and the Kellys, co-founders of The Local, all bring a deep connection to the Port Macquarie community. We have spent most of our life in this beautiful coastal town and are now raising our young families here. Jeremy's involvement in The Local brings a diverse perspective to the team. As a Port local with a professional background in rugby league, he adds a unique dimension to the project. His passion for community engagement and his understanding of sports and culture enrich The Local's offerings. Tell us how did The Local all come about? For all of us the decision to embark on

this entrepreneurial journey was not taken lightly. It was the culmination of years of shared experiences and a desire for a change that would bring something special to our hometown. Our close-knit friendship provided a solid foundation for this new venture. We recognised that together, we could achieve something extraordinary. When the opportunity to purchase Bluewater Bar arose, we knew that it was the perfect spot to create The Local. Please introduce us to your chef and his background in the industry? Meet Garry Popowski, the culinary adventurer who turned a passion for cooking into a journey through some of Australia and the world's most iconic kitchens. Garry started out as an apprentice chef at Pier Restaurant in Rose Bay after moving to Sydney from his Tasmanian homeland, working in the kitchen regarded as the best seafood restaurant in Australia.

After that, Garry took his skills back to Tasmania, hopping around some of the best restaurants. A stint at Hayman Island's top-rated island resort came next, followed by a detour to England for some Michelin-starred experience in French country retreats. Returning to Sydney, Garry worked in various kitchens, running the 360 Bar and Dining Revolving Restaurant to Newtown's The Batch Eatery. In 2017, craving a change, Garry landed in Port Macquarie. At Sails Resort by Rydges, he led a kitchen renovation and played multiple roles, showing off his kitchen versatility. The Botanic Wine Garden and the Wicked Elf Brewery also saw his culinary touch, where he revamped menus, ran the kitchen, and mastered the art of pairing food with craft beer. Garry is more than just a chef, he is a down-to-earth culinary wizard with a taste for turning kitchens into stories. Does the menu have a theme, and what

can our readers expect when they visit? The Local's menu is a reflection of our amazing chef Garry, While it doesn't adhere to a single theme, it has a range of dishes that offer something for everyone. When your readers visit, they can expect a range of options such as burgers, wings, curries and lots of pub classics. What truly sets The Local apart is its commitment to sourcing ingredients locally. This not only supports the community but also ensures that the dishes are fresh and of the highest quality. The Local has such a great space both indoors and outdoors, tell us what do you have in store for the venue; what are your goals? We have lots of ideas and plans for The Local. Our primary goals for the venue are all about creating a multifaceted space that enriches the lives of our patrons. We want to create a place where friends and families can meet, where memorable events can take place and where people can gather, wine and dine or relax and watch all the big sports events on our huge TV! We aim to be more than just a restaurant and bar, but a community hub where friends and families come together. Whether it’s a birthday celebration, a special anniversary, or a local gathering, our venue is here to host and facilitate these important moments in the lives of our patrons. For those who enjoy live music, our beer garden will be the go-to spot during the summer months, with local talent performing and a fantastic atmosphere. Additionally, our spacious deck and dining area can be hired for various functions, providing a versatile and

accommodating space for special events. The Sports bar offers a range of TVs making it the place to be to watch all your favourite sports. Our commitment is not only to provide excellent food and drinks but also to offer an unmatched atmosphere that fosters a sense of belonging and community. The Local's mission is to be a place that evolves with the changing needs and interests of Port Macquarie, ensuring that it remains a cherished destination for years to come.

When customers step into The Local, our aspiration is to envelop them in a complete and enriching experience. Whether it's the thrill of watching a pivotal sports match, savouring a delectable meal, or sharing laughter with friends in our beer garden,

LIFE’S t short

T

here aren’t enough hours in every day. How often do we hear this or mutter it to anyone who will listen ourselves?

Time is money, time is of the essence, time is precious, we live in a ‘time poor’ society. The list goes on and one thing is clear – time is something we simply don’t have enough of. Hence we have no choice but to scrutinise our ‘to do’ lists and ‘prioritise’ and/or ‘multitask’, just to get through every day and tick off as much of that mountain of stuff as we can. Exhausting much? And impossible to do it all that’s for sure. So what do we do? Something’s got to give... That something, which you’ve probably already guessed, is sadly often the way we care for ourselves. When the pressures of work and family life mount up, this is so often the first place we tend to cut corners. And the most time-consuming aspect of self-care is most certainly the preparation of meals. Shopping, cooking, cleaning, managing fridges, freezers and pantries. This could be, (and is) a full-time job in itself. Throw in small children and dietary

requirements to complicate (and create more mess). It’s relentless and monotonous, this need to feed and be fed. Much as some of us find so much joy in cooking, there’s those nights where you come home and you just want to take all the shortcuts to get it over with. And that is where the compromise begins – where we sacrifice things like fresh and wholesome ingredients for the convenience of processed, packaged foods. It can be so tempting, and we’ve all be there. Some days it is just too much, the thought of planning meals and going through the motions, and some days we simply just don’t have that kind of time. Coming home late from work, running around doing drop offs and pick ups to and from kids activities…everyone’s hungry and you just need to get the food up on the table fast! Yep, we’ve all been there and sure, as an occasional solution it is absolutely fine, but when it is night after night we need to take a moment to ask – is everything else so important that it is worth such a compromise on our health and wellbeing? After all, we know all those processed foods are so not good for us and our families.

Palate with LOU PERRI

FROM THE STUNNED MULLET

We know that a proper home cooked meal tastes better, makes us feel better, encourages that nurtured feeling of comfort of being in our home… But still there’s no time! Maybe life is just too short for there not to be? As we are what we eat, so isn’t it fundamentally important to take the time? With a little bit of foresight, a little bit of planning and knowledge it is more than possible to still be ‘time poor’ and have enough time to rustle up something big on flavour, freshness and deliciousness. You can easily jazz up the most basic of meals with a little creativity. Life’s too short to eat bad food. Figure out what you love to eat and find a way to have it at your fingertips. Stock your pantry full of wholesome ingredients, your most beloved condiments to jazz up your most humble sandwiches. Batch cook up your favourites (you name it, lasagne, curries, soups) and freeze for a rainy day. Ditto homemade chicken stock for the freezer! There’s a whole world of resources on this subject out there…yeah who has the time, Bbt it is so worth the effort and life’s too short…no time for a bad sandwich! GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 41

Pacific Lobster

with Black Garlic, Chili & Lemon Myrtle Leaf Butter COOKER PELLET

SERVES 2

INGREDIENTS One whole fresh caught (alive) Pacific Lobster Garlic Butter Mix (sauce) Butter Olive Oil Black Garlic Lemon Myrtle leaves Long Red Chili

ALLOW 1 HOUR

COOK METHOD INDIRECT

COOK METHOD Prepare Freeze the live lobster in a cooler (esky or chilly-bin) packed with ice, to put old-mate to sleep. Once ‘asleep’, using a heavy chopping knife split the lobster down the middle lengthways, removing the entrails to tidy up the head area. Cook Set the pellet grill to 300F and place the two halves shell side down and barbecue for 12-14 minutes and then turn over to cook for an additional 4-6 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches approx 135F. Tip: Use a super-clean mesh grill (accessory) over the top of the (included) grill racks to keep the lobster meat pristine and unaffected by any previous meat residue or creosite. Whilst the lobster is cooking, add to a grill safe pan or foil tray, 1/2 cup butter, tablespoon of olive oil, rough chopped black garlic, fine chopped chili and 2 fine chopped lemon myrtle leaves and heat through, stirring occasionally until bubbling hot, then set aside (keep warm). Serving One of the finest things in life is chowing down on a super-fresh Pacific Lobster, drizzled in this amazing black garlic butter & leafy sauce, as-is. A simple plating will wow your guests and you can also serve this dish with some grilled veges (from this book) on the side. Notes: Add a smoking chip box with hickory or pecan wood chips to promote extra smoky flavour into the meat if desired.

ILLY is set to play in Port Macquarie on the 10th November and Coffs Harbour on the 11th, so we sat down for a chat with him ahead of these shows to find out what he’s been up to and what we can expect from the tour.

H

ey Illy. Can you tell us about the latest music you’ve been working on?

I put out the last album in January 2021, but wasn’t able to tour because of the second wave of COVID lockdowns. I just got back in the studio, and have basically been working on new music since then with the intention of eventually getting an album together. My single Heartless has just come out as the first taste of that new music. You’ve worked on a few collaborations with other artists, what’s it like coming together with another artist to create music? What do you enjoy about it? It’s a lot of fun. I mean Hopeless I had written with some friends, even before the pandemic, but I kept it off the last album because of the inability to play it live and I really wanted to be releasing it when it was possible to play it live at shows. So it’s been in existence for a little while. It’s always a little different when the song already exists, and then you’re pitching

But I loved idea of where I hear the track going and then it and I knew it was a really strong song, so see who would be a good fit for that. thankfully the first person that we sent it Where are you drawing inspiration from to was Indiana, and at the moment? she loved it and was I mean, the same as down to jump on it. usual, it’s usually from If I was able So it made the whole experiences that I’ve to sing I process very easy, which had or experiences would probably do is nice. It’s not always my friends or family like that. Even though a lot of it myself, have gone through, she is based in LA, I but since I’m not it’s generally from a think when the artist the greatest singer real life experience. hears the song and in the world I leave Although it might not immediately is like ‘yeah that to the pros. be just one breakup or I love this’ everything one relationship or one just kind of falls into interaction, it might place pretty quickly. be drawing from a lot What is your process usually like when of different things and then making it into a putting new music together? narrative that works as a song. Generally, more often than not, the song We had a chat with you at the end of will be written before it’s sent to an artist to 2021, how do you feel your music has feature on it. If I was able to sing I would evolved over the last couple of years? probably do a lot of it myself, but since I’m I’ve been working with new people, which not the greatest singer in the world I leave has been fun. A lot of my earlier stuff was that to the pros. When I write the song, I’ll

with quite a small circle of collaborators. Now I think the music that I’m making probably has a little bit more of a live element. There’s more of a band element to a lot of the tracks. You can kind of hear that in Hopeless, there’s lots of guitar, there’s lots of drums. So I think that’s maybe one thing that I’ve noticed when I listen to everything that I’ve got, I notice a trend that way. But the focus is still the same in writing songs that people can relate to, there’s a lot of melody, I like to keep the raps good without being overdone or trying to put on too much aggression or anything. I try to make music that people are gonna like and be able to have fun with, and it’s got to be good live. That has always been super important to me. You’re going to be playing in Port Macquarie on the 10th Nov, and Coffs Harbour on the 11th. What can we expect from this show? I know Hopeless has just come out, and a lot of times you’d be doing a regional tour around the new album, but with that not being the case for now, I really just wanted to get out and play shows. We’ve been able to go back through my catalog, and there’s some songs that haven’t been in the playlist for years that we’re getting to give a run out again, which has been really fun. We’ll be playing some unreleased stuff, which will come out next year and then all the songs people know. So we’ve got a new setlist, but even though it’s a new setlist most of the songs are ones that people will know and they may not have heard for a while at a show.

every muscle in my body hurts! My voice is obviously halfway out. But it has been really worth it and I love doing this and I love playing my music for people and getting to go around the country and around the world. I’m hardwired to do it. What’s next for you? I mean, there’s a lot more shows to do before the end of this tour! But other than that it is really just about finishing the next album. There’s plenty of stuff to do there. I’ll be busy till the end of the year for sure, if not into next year. Where can people find concert tickets and check out your new music?

I think when the artist hears the song and

immediately is like yeah I love this everything just

kind of falls into place pretty quickly.

My website illyal.com, all the information everyone needs is there. Thanks Illy.

What do you enjoy most about getting up in front of an audience and performing live? Crowd interaction is huge. After the last few years of not being able to do it, I realise how much I’ve grown up with that being part of my life. So just reconnecting with that has been a lot of fun. I mean, I say it’s been a lot of fun, but almost GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 47

Each item I choose forms part of a story, and together they create an immersive shopping experience. Over the years I have honed my skills and fully appreciate the importance of personalisation. The secret to our success so far has been in getting to know you, our loyal local regulars, and curating our offering with you in mind, each and every time. An excellent example of connected community was just recently, when we hosted what used to be an annual event, (but hasn’t happened for a good 3 years, since Covid). The event in question was our Super Sidewalk Sale. I sent personal invitations to everyone in our database, and spread the word on social media. It seems as though the world of big retail has conditioned us to expect regular sales, and I get it, that’s what they need to do. But our community knows when I say I’m holding a Super Sidewalk Sale, there’s a reason

You know when you plan to hold a garage sale and you say “Starts at 9am” and people arrive and begin opening up your garage at 6:30am, well fortunately it was much more respectful than that, but the vibe was the same! The atmosphere was electric! I’ve learned an early start It seems as is a good start, and though the it was so much fun world of big retail seeing so many of our has conditioned regulars as well as new us to expect faces jumping in and grabbing a bargain, regular sales, and all the while helping I get it, that’s what me out to make some they need to do. space for the upcoming season ahead… Amidst the hustle of the day, there was one moment that stopped me in my tracks. Now as we enter the gift giving season, I wouldn’t be being honest if I said I didn’t feel just a little pressure. I also know that many a husband, partner, dad and son know exactly where to go on that last weekend before Christmas(!) even though “You” have been dropping hints via Instagram for months. It’s a responsibility I take seriously and this year will be no different! Challenge accepted for 2023!! So as I sit here and reflect on the ebbs and flows of our decade (+) long journey so far, I’m proud of where we are compared to where we were. i Irene. For those that are unfamiliar, could you share a bit about Hastings Little Wishes and what it is you do?

We are a not for profit local registered charity. We grant wishes to children and teens up to the age of 17 living with serious illness. We support children in the Hastings LGA. Anyone can nominate a local family on our website following some basic guidelines. Since we last spoke, you have some more 62 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

Little Wishes recipients that have been nominated. Can you tell us about them and their situations? We have completed 3 more amazing wishes and are currently working on 2 more. Four year old Byron has a lifelong illness called Hirschsprung’s Disease. Diagnosed before his 1st birthday, this cruel disease has left Byron with a non functioning bowel. This causes so many challenges for this little boy who has already had to endure so many surgeries. Byron wanted to go on an aeroplane and loves crocodiles.

So off to the Sunshine Coast he went, staying at a beautiful Caloundra resort and spending some fun days at Australia Zoo. Nine year old Maddison lives with Chronic Kidney Disease. Maddi spends so much time in hospital and misses out on so many school days and fun activities with her friends. Maddi really wanted to go to the Outback Spectacular on the Gold Coast. We were able to send her up with her Mum and her sister to stay at SeaWorld Resort and organised a special night at the Spectacular meeting the crew and horses. We

We were able to help this beautiful family of six go on a fantastic holiday together and each sibling was given a special gift as they are also affected by their little sister’s condition. They all worry about her which is so sweet, but heartbreaking that they have to deal with such a scary situation. Three year old Reid was born with Septo-Optic Dysplasia causing

blindness and hormonal imbalances. We are sending this little family up to SeaWorld for a sensory experience for little Reid and are also in the process of setting up an organic vegetable garden for them as a healthy diet is very important to Reid’s treatment plan. A double wish which is still in progress is with a beautiful family who have adopted 2 darling children with disabilities. We could not be more excited to help this family with a very special wish to install a new ducted air conditioning unit in their home. DO YOU HAVE OR ARE YOU CONSIDERING A DENTURE?

TRADITIONAL DENTURES VS IMPLANT SUPPORTED OR FIXED DENTURES If you are currently in need of dentures or feel that due to significant tooth and bone loss you may be looking at a future with a denture it is important to do your research and consider planning your dental future as early as possible.

M

any people are unaware that there are options and assume that their future holds a denture like their grandparents. Today, patients with heavily broken-down smiles have options that weren’t available 5-10 years ago and they choose from traditional dentures or implant-supported dentures. Also, patients who already have dentures tend to be unaware that they have options because they stop seeing the dentist and instead see a denture technician and are not aware that technology has moved forward. If you fit into any of these categories or feel that your dental health is on the decline due to missing, broken, or teeth that are compromised due to gum disease, it’s time to start educating yourself; the first step is to understand that you have a choice. Dentally Compromised Patients. Sadly this represents a greater portion of the population than we realise. These patients have a smile that is either letting them down aesthetically or functionally and some are living with pain and discomfort due to their teeth and may be struggling to eat or even drink water due to the pain. These patients stand to improve their quality of life by spending some time 66 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

discussing what their options are and starting a plan early so that they can improve their dental health and make a plan that can change over time as their needs change. Treatment for patients may include bridges, partial dentures, dentures or fixed dentures. Treatment starts with a 3D x ray and full consultation that considers what they want from their future and their dental health. Denture Patients. Traditional dentures rely on dental adhesive and the structure of the mouth, the bone, soft tissue and muscles to stay in place. Generations have used dentures and while they are successful for some, others struggle with the fit, and feel they struggle to speak and chew, to eat their favorite foods and even struggle to smile. Some patients live with loose dentures for years and some give up wearing their denture full stop. If this sounds like you or a loved one, why not consider a reline for your existing denture, an adjustment or a new denture or a consultation for a Fixed Denture or an All-on-4 Denture? The treatment starts with a 3D x ray and a full consultation to discuss options, then further appointments with a denture technician. A typical denture takes 3-5 appointments to achieve a functional and comfortable denture. Implant-supported dentures patients. Implant

supported dentures work by placing four to six implants into the upper or lower jawbone that the fixed denture locks into creating a functional, aesthetic and long-lasting smile for our patients. These dentures can be made of acrylic or zirconium and may (or may not) be supported by a metal bar. These dentures stay in place and act as functional and natural teeth and are called a ‘Fixed Denture' or an 'Allon-4 Denture’. This revolutionary treatment is changing the way patients eat, smile and experience life. The treatment starts with a 3D x ray consultation with a discussion of option and a treatment plan and quote. In the second appointment the patient will be shown a plastic model of their existing teeth and the All-on-4 teeth. If the patient accepts treatment, they should expect 1-2 more appointments to place the implants and fit the All-on-4 Smile. Some patients can achieve full upper and lower dentures in a single appointment. If you or a loved one are dentally compromised or living with an ill-fitting denture, why not start planning your dental future with a full range of choices and start life with a smile. Ring the caring team at Sundial Dental and ask for an All-on-4 consultation today on 6583 3533 or 6585 2015 or visit our web site for more information sundialdental.com.au

ome Care Package Providers

Home Care Packages are designed to help you maintain your independence and lifestyle in your own home but with so many options and decisions, how do you know you’re making the right choice for you? The first step is to select an approved home care package provider to help you manage your plan and budget. While home care provider options may seem vast, there are two basic ways to manage your plan: 1. Traditional care providers, or 2. Self-managed care. Traditional Providers Traditional service providers deliver fully managed home care, putting them in charge of every aspect of your care – from finances through to scheduling services and choosing the people who deliver them. While this approach might sound appealing, it means you can’t necessarily control which members of their team are rostered to be in your home or the price they charge for their services. Fully managed home care also comes at a price. Traditional providers typically charge a monthly fee, daily fees and an inflated hourly rate for the delivery of services or support. These rates usually include fees on top of the direct service charge. This can have a significant impact on your home care package budget. Self-managed Care Providers Self-managed care allows you to take control of the care services they need and the care providers they use. Unlike traditional providers, self-management

68 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

empowers the consumer to spend less on management fees, freeing up their home care package budget for better long-term care and services. Fees for a self-managed service are usually charged at a flat percentage rate, with no daily management fees or exit fees, and because you can choose your own support providers, you know the service rate you’ll be charged. Self-managing your Home Care Package Self-management is a great way to keep control over your home care package. It offers the flexibility to get help with your budget and care plan but allows you to select your preferred service providers. Self-management can allow you to: • Design your care plan and budget • Gain more control over how your funds are spent • Choose the support workers that suit your lifestyle • Find services at rates that are acceptable to you • Increase your care hours with lower hourly rates Why self-manage?

can call Trilogy Care, Australia’s leading selfmanaged home care package service provider. The Trilogy Care difference Trilogy Care offers two levels of self-managed home care - Self-Management and SelfManagement Plus. Their Self-Management option allows you to take full control over your home care package. Their Self-Management Plus option is for those who need some care coordination support. Both service options allow you to retain control of your home care package with all services charged under our fixed fee structure - no setup fee, no daily fee, no exit fee. If you have been assessed for or have an approved home care package, find out how Trilogy Care can support you. Visit trilogycare. com.au or call us on 1300 459 190

How do I self-manage my home care package? 1. Choose your provider Research care providers! Talk to selfmanaged care providers to source a provider that’s going to work within your needs and budget.

By self-managing your home care package, you have control over who provides your care and services. You can surround yourself with the best people and receive exactly the service you want. Self-management also allows you to negotiate pricing with service providers. This means you’re not locked into the rates set by your HCP provider.

2. Care planning

Fzgerd Ken Fitzgerald, along with his wife Lorrae and another Port Macquarie local Liz Harrison, travelled to Thailand recently to compete in the World Dragon Boat Championships representing Australia with the Auroras.

H

i Ken. When did you first discover dragon boat racing and what motivated you to take it up?

We started dragon boating in 2009. My wife, Lorrae, started with a friend of hers and six months later she got me to go along with her. Once we started, we really enjoyed it and we’ve been paddling ever since. For me it was a great sport as I had a few knee problems, and I got to paddle sitting down, so it was ideal. Can you tell us about how often you paddle/train and where? We paddle 3 or 4 times a week at the moment, dragon boating and outrigging, on the Hastings River. In the build up to the Auroras campaign we were at Your Life Gym three times a week and travelling to Taree three times a week to train in our North Coast 70 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

Aurora hub with Manning River. You were one of three Port Macquarie locals who travelled to Thailand this year to compete in the World Dragon Boat Championships with the Auroras. How were you selected and who made up the teams? That’s right. Liz Harrison, Lorrae and myself are all from Port Macquarie and we all made the Australian team. The selections were earlier in the year in Canberra. Paddlers from all around the country trained to prepare for the selections. We had off the water strength and erg trials and then on the water racing and video sessions before the final selections were announced. After that there were months of intensive training and camps leading up to the World Championships in Thailand. What was the lead up to the event like? Did you get much of a chance to train all together with the Auroras?

The lead up was hard work. Having been selected to represent Australia the motivation was high so we all put in a lot of work both on and off the water. We were training six days a week; it takes over your life. You become very focused and nothing gets in the way, but it was worth the effort and sacrifice. We all made some trips to Sydney to train with other team members when we could. The coach set up hubs around the country so we could train together in small groups but all did the same programme. We had our base in Taree. The team members were from every state so we gathered together for two camps leading up to the event. It’s a big country and the costs soon add up so we couldn’t get together as regularly as we would have liked. Can you tell us about the experience and how you went? It was a fantastic experience. The team all got on really well in our division, Senior C, and the

It’s fortunate we get to experience different countries and cultures while doing the sport we love. Also, seeing and cheering on the Ukraine team finish a 2km race in a submerged boat is something I’ll never forget. Do you have any other big plans for the future in the sport? We do. The next World Nations is in Brandenburg, Germany in 2025 and it’s our goal to qualify to represent Australia again. Until then there are local regattas, Lunar New Year, State and the Australian Championships in Western Australia next April. On a local level we are now working on a new dragon boat club. We hope to grow the sport and help others to paddle for fun, fitness and if they want, compete in regattas. If you’d like to join us, keep an eye out for some information in the near future. We’d like to see paddling grow in the Wauchope and Port Macquarie area. We certainly have beautiful waterways to take advantage of. Thanks Ken. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 71

Is It Sciatica?

If you are suffering from sciatica you are not alone. It is thought that over 40% of people experience sciatica at some point in their life.

U

nderstanding Sciatica Sciatica is defined by pain that starts in your lower back and extends down your buttocks, thigh, calf, and sometimes into your foot and toes. This pain can manifest with varying intensity and qualities, spanning from a dull ache to sharp, stabbing sensations, or even a feeling of numbness, burning, or pins and needles. The specific nature of the pain often offers insights into its underlying causes. Identifying the Causes of Sciatica The root causes of sciatica are diverse, with some of the most common culprits that we see clinically being; disc herniations in the spine, particularly at the L5/S1 level; muscle entrapment of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle in the hip, and referred pain originating from trigger point knots

in the gluteal and lower back muscles. In many cases, multiple causes can overlap, especially when an individual has been dealing with sciatica for an extended period. This underscores the importance of a thorough assessment before embarking on sciatica treatment. What Can You Do? Sciatica often reacts sensitively to certain positions and movements. In light of this, it can be advantageous to avoid specific positional triggers to help the pain subside.

One key recommendation for individuals suffering from sciatica is to steer clear of sitting on the couch with your leg(s) extended in front of you. This position replicates the very posture used to test for sciatica. In this seated position, the sciatic nerve experiences tension and stretching, both of which it dislikes. Samantha

Patrick Samantha Patrick is the teacher behind Tikvah Education Australia, the HoTLaNe Academy and the School Of Wanderers, which she set up after she was diagnosed with cancer and was no longer able to be in the classroom. Her diagnosis prompted her to redirect her passion for education and set up these programs to focus on children who are educationally disadvantaged in some way.

H

i Samantha. Could you tell us a bit about Tikvah Education Australia and the HoTLaNe Academy and your motivation for getting these initiatives

In my professional life as a teacher, I have gleaned from highly experienced educators and leaders whom I now attribute my success to. They have handed the baton to me and I am simply running the race with great passion to raise up highly equipped educators for the benefit of all students in public education.

is of the essence. I have realised that despite embarking on a seemingly impossible journey, that many would not touch with a ten foot pole, what I see for Tikvah is achievable in a relatively short time. Our students depend on it.

Tikvah Education Australia and its HoTLaNe Academy provide free, personalised instruction and behavioural support for educationally disadvantaged children and youth.

I am establishing a service that will provide educationally disadvantaged children and youth with exceptional educational practices that are founded upon evidence so that we can achieve what we say we will do, which is to help these kids catch up.

I have established the HoTLaNe Academy, which is a free service that supports students from grades 2 to 10 in Australian public schools who are 18 months or more behind in literacy and/ or numeracy.

started?

I saw the vision for Tikvah Education Australia after I was diagnosed with stage 3, and later stage 4, breast cancer. This vision was far bigger than I could achieve on my own. I prayed, "Lord, how can I do that? I am stuck in bed on chemo!" Although I was no longer fit to work in the classroom, I realised that my role as a teacher was not lost. It was changing in a way that I would be able to have an even greater impact on the lives of young people. How would I do this? My job is to inspire, empower and release! 76 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

I can't stand back and do nothing when I see kids going to high school unable to read. It breaks my heart. I have the capacity to bring change for these significantly disadvantaged kids, and where there is the capacity, my moral duty is to step up to the call. My condition has become a catalyst for action. While living as if I don't have cancer, which enables me to make decisions for the future, I carry with me an understanding that time

Who are these services open to and what is the process of getting involved like?

Students are identified either through people directly contacting us or by us engaging with schools. Many of the students have had a very negative experience of schooling, so this has meant that standardised testing is not an effective tool for identifying students who are in need of our support. Personalised assessment allows us to be flexible in taking the assessment where it needs to go, so we can get the information we need.

My goal is that our students will experience significant growth in literacy and numeracy in a short time and that they catch up to national standards.

All assessments are therefore conducted either in person or online with an accredited teacher. In some cases, school reports and allied health professional reports are sufficient for determining eligibility without the need for additional assessment with one of our teachers.

For some students, it is more likely they will engage with us if they don't realise they are being tested, or even that they are learning. Some are so negatively impacted by their school experience, that as soon as they find out you are a teacher, they disengage or even become aggressive, and you begin the process of rebuilding trust. We also work collaboratively with schools to obtain reports and anecdotal assessments of students' achievement and engagement in school, and we work with families to understand the child's home experience. There are many varying reasons for educational disadvantage and these must be known and understood to effectively meet the individual’s needs. Eligible students receive a minimum of 4 hours of tuition per week, with additional behavioural

support where needed. Depending on the category they are enrolled in, they can receive more than this.

trouble with the law, which, in some cases, can result in juvenile detention. By providing personalised support, we could change the course of young people's lives and reduce the financial burden upon the economy.

What sort of difference do you hope Tikvah can make to the kids that participate in your programs?

You are going to be taking 7 children over to PNG to walk the Kokoda Trail, which is pretty incredible! What do you have planned for this trip?

My goal is that our students will experience significant growth in literacy and numeracy in a short time and that they catch up to national standards. For primary school kids, the goal is for them to catch up before they enter high school, so that they are better prepared and experience greater success in their secondary education.

On November 6, a team of 5 adults and 7 children aged between 9 and 14 will travel from Port Macquarie NSW to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea where we will begin our 14 day venture on the Kokoda Track. Our guide will be Kokoda Historical.

For high schoolers, the goal is to prepare them for success in their school certificate, to encourage continuation into year 11 and 12, and to have these students aspire to go to university or begin a trade.

The community can keep up to date in real time while we are on our venture by following us on our Facebook page, Tikvah Education Australia. When out of range, updates will be communicated through a satellite phone back to the Kokoda Historical base in Australia and shared on Kokoda Historical's Facebook page, which can be found under their business name.

Anti-social behaviour is a serious issue in schools. Low educational outcomes are a significant contributor to this behaviour. My hope is that by providing education in the way that we are, we will see behaviour improving in schools.

On November 22, the day before we return to Australia, we will be providing our students the opportunity to experience the joy of giving, and gain a greater understanding of poverty in PNG, as they deliver donated chickens to needy people in Port Moresby.

Some young people's behaviour can lead to

What do you hope the outcomes for this trip are? My philosophy is that immersion is the best form of education. I gained a deeper understanding of history and geography when I got in a 4WD and towed a caravan around Australia and when I got on a plane and travelled beyond my country's international borders. My hope is that these young people who we are taking to PNG will come back with a wealth of knowledge to share with their friends, family and teachers, and that they will carry this knowledge throughout their lives. This is authentic literacy. Their conversations will include a more advanced vocabulary. They will be sharing personal anecdotes of historical and geographical insight because they can visualise the place, the events and the people. They will be retelling what they experienced, which is far easier than trying to communicate something that is completely foreign and abstract that was learned second-hand. Their personal reflections will also be published in our Kokoda educational program that will be sold to schools nationally and internationally. Revenue generated from the sale of all of our products helps fund the HoTLaNe Academy and The School of Wanderers. I also hope that this trip to PNG will show the world that we at Tikvah are proactive in providing authentic educational opportunities for young people, particularly those who 78 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

experience significant educational disadvantage. Do you plan to run more travel programs in the future?

continue beyond me, making a difference for educationally disadvantaged children and youth for generations to come.

Yes. This excursion to PNG will launch The School of Wanderers. HoTLaNe Academy students are automatically eligible to be selected for sponsorship for interstate and international excursions through the School of Wanderers, with this being the first excursion of many.

The Samantha Joy Patrick Foundation will be the avenue in which donations can be received. It will fund our social cause for providing free, personalised educational support, and interstate and international travel experiences for our most disadvantaged children and youth across Australia, giving them hope and a future.

Plans for the school are forming, with the primary goal of meeting the needs of significantly disadvantaged children and youth through immersed learning. While this school is in its grassroots stage, and is not yet a physical school, it will be in the future. Donations to the Samantha Joy Patrick Foundation will contribute to making this possible.

Looking at what you’ve started, what would you like to see these initiatives become in the future?

You are in the process of setting up the Samantha Joy Patrick Foundation, can you share what it is all about?

I would like to see The School of Wanderers become an avenue for changing the way young people communicate and approach life, equipping them to become a functional and productive member of society.

While walking the Kokoda track, I will be writing my memoirs. Kokoda is a fitting location for reflection upon my life that has been filled with much hardship and has taught me that, even though I am just one person, I can make a difference across the world by the way I live and inspire. This will be the beginning of making my story known internationally. My goal is to build a legacy. Tikvah Education Australia, its HoTLaNe Academy, and its school, 'The School of Wanderers', will

I would like to see the HoTLaNe Academy become a reputable and trusted service amongst Australian public schools for supporting their most educationally disadvantaged children and youth.

I would like to see that the educational needs of all Australian public school students are addressed and that national standards for literacy and numeracy are achieved. I would like to see that there is no child who is more than 18 months behind in literacy and/ or numeracy. I no longer want to see students failing to this extent, because that is not a reflection on them. That is a reflection on us.

Tikvah Education Australia is committed to the sustainability of its services. For the long-term success of the HoTLaNe Academy and School of Wanderers, we design and sell educational products. The revenue funds our services. We don’t intend our services to be a burden upon the economy, but rather, that our services boost the economy. Therefore, our educational products promote national and international tourism amongst young people and their families.

3 The University Scholarship Fund

Tikvah’s University Scholarship fund is our professional development and employment strategy. We will equip pre-service teachers with evidence-based teaching practices so they can become highly effective teachers for the benefit of all students.

Students in the HoTLaNe Academy are eligible for sponsorship for School of Wanderers excursions. In the future, Tikvah Education Australia will establish the School of Wanderers as a physical school with multiple categories of enrollment for disadvantaged students.

Sponsor an Interstate or International Excursion The School of Wanderers provides the opportunity for students to travel across Australia and overseas. This includes HoTLaNe Academy students as well as other eligible students. On our first international excursion, where we will walk the Kokoda Trail with 7 students in November 2023, we will be creating an educational program about Kokoda and the ANZACs at the same time. Your sponsorship not only makes the excursion possible for students, but also contributes to the development of the educational program that will be sold to schools, teachers and individuals that will generate long-term income for the HoTLaNe Academy and the School of Wanderers.

Phil Bell is a Palaeontologist, one of only about 100-150 in his field in the world! He has recently arrived home from a monthlong dig in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia, and when he’s not out in the field he is a lecturer at the University of New England.

H

i Phil. When did you first become interested in fossils and our natural history? How did you get introduced to Palaeontology?

Like most professional dinosaurophiles, I was probably 4 or 5. I definitely told my kindergarten teacher that I wanted to be a palaeontologist when I grew up. I grew up on the South Coast of NSW and my parents are nature lovers, so I was always outdoors,

exploring. My Dad worked in a medical lab, so dinosaurs and learning from different people. he would bottle and preserve any dead snakes It was a real privilege, and today I still bounce and reptiles we found, which I displayed in back and forth between here and Canada. my room. It’s in deserts using a this was something paintbrush to dig up partly true, but you wanted to pursue bones. It’s partly true, most of it is really as a career and how but most of it is really hard yakka. did you get started in hard yakka. I think a lot the industry? of dreams get shattered I was just like most when you’re handed a little boys that like dinosaurs, except I didn’t jackhammer and a mattock and have to break grow out of it! I knew I had to have a PhD rock under the sun for 2 weeks straight. It’s in palaeontology, even from a young age, so actually a really multi-faceted job. In the field, there’s a lot of brute strength and endurance, I always felt like school was a waste of time because it ‘prevented’ me from doing what but also a skilled hand and elements of engineering. In the lab, it’s a lot more cerebral; I really wanted to do. Obviously, I was totally wrong! It wasn’t until I moved to Sydney to I spend most of my days reading and writing. do uni that it really started to come together, That is, when I’m not teaching or dealing with and from there I moved to Canada to study. the usual paperwork and nonsense that most That really opened my eyes and allowed me jobs have. to travel the word studying and digging up Continued over... my job, but I also have to find ways to fund it. Uni’s don’t automatically hand over their cash and say “off you go!”, but I have just got back from a month in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia. Before that, it was Canada, and before that it was South Africa. That’s all this year. Making up for lost time over COVID, I reckon. What have been some of the most exciting things you’ve discovered or learned about through your Most people are career?

What area of the field do you work in, and what are your current roles? I’m a lecturer at the University of New England, so I do a lot of teaching and I also supervise MSc and PhD students. I really enjoy that because I see some of myself in them and it’s great to be able to help them on their journey. Then there’s the fieldwork and research aspect, which is my real passion. Can you share with us a bit about some of the projects you’ve worked on? I specialise in the study of dinosaur skin, which is always a weird thing to say to people. It’s not just bones we find, but also fossilised skin and feathers. But because there aren’t many 86 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

people who work in this area, I end up working with scientists all over the world, which is pretty cool. Looking at things that most people don’t, including other palaeontologists, you make discoveries all the time.

Your work takes you to some pretty remote parts of the world, what have been some of the most stand out places you have been to? I’m really lucky to get to travel a lot as part of

Working on fossil skin and scales has been a lot of fun. Most people are occupied with their bones, but skin is where it’s at! We discovered the first dinosaur belly button and a dinosaur with a fleshy rooster crest. Figuring out that we can differentiate species of dinosaurs based on their scale patterns, just like a snake or a lizard, was a breakthrough early in my career, and that’s where I figured I could create a niche for myself in this profession.

Fortunately, I had really supportive parents and no one ever told me to get a real job. So, I think the main thing is, if you have the passion and the skills, then follow your dreams.

There are actually very few palaeontologists in the world, is there much demand for this kind of work? What would you say to anyone considering this field of work? There’s no denying it’s a hard slog. There are maybe 100-150 people in the world that get paid to dig up dinosaurs for a living. Palaeontology is much broader than that though; you can study fossil plants, fish, insects, mammals, but it’s still a slog. Realistically, you’re looking at around 10 years of uni then another 3-10 years of short-term, basically contract work. Then, if you’re lucky, you might land a permanent gig in a museum or at a uni. Fortunately, I had really supportive parents and no one ever told me to get a real job. So, I think the main thing is, if you have

the passion and the skills, then follow your dreams. What have been some of the most challenging and rewarding things about your job? As a 20-something, travelling the world was amazing, but these days being away from my family is hard. I know a lot of palaeontologists whose relationships didn’t work out long term because they’re often away and the other person is left at home picking up the pieces. I think it’s especially hard on the kids. My wife is amazing though, but we have to work hard to make sure that we’re both supported in the ways we need, not to mention the kids. Doing fieldwork is what really makes me happy, but it’s a double-edged sword. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 87

Janette Hyde

THE GUTS, GRIT AND GROUNDWORK OF REMARKABLE REGIONAL ENTREPRENEURS, I N N O V AT O R S , L E A D E R S AND GAME CHANGERS.

Janette Hyde is an inspiration, a humble force of nature, connecting and championing of our region for almost 50 years though her professional and many voluntary roles. Considered by many as the beloved Fairy Godmother of Tourism in Port Macquarie, she has been the glue and guiding light through the best and the very toughest of times.

H

ow did you start your journey into this lifelong passion of tourism?

Alan and I moved to Port Macquarie in 1975 when it was a sleepy little town with a population of around 10,000. Theme parks included the Dolphin and Marine Park, Kingfisher Wildlife Park, Fantasy Glades, Peppermint Park and the start of the Billabong Zoo. It was obvious to me that our region had the potential to be a tourism mecca. The Tourism Association was formed, and I played a very small part in the foundation of this very visionary group of people. The more I became involved I realised that tourism had

90 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

the potential to be a solid platform for our local economy and I wanted to be part of this opportunity and movement. As President of the Tourism Association, you were at the helm of an industry that was thrashed by flood, fire, COVID, staff shortages and multiple threats on major event contracts. What is it about this industry and the people in it that inspires you to connect and drive them forward? We are very fortunate that the tourism industry is comprised of so many diverse sectors. From accommodation, attractions, hospitality, nightlife, venues, events and many other support industries it has become evident that we have so many committed businesses who when faced with adversity, work together and support each other. This was evident through the very tough times that have happened over the past years. The support that was offered by each business was inspirational. Port Macquarie Hastings Council formed a task force of many influential community leaders and set a way forward to maximise the opportunities that could be utilised. The road was set to move forward and support all the businesses that were impacted by all of these

natural disasters. Our region became a more unified group of people who were willing to support each other. This in itself was very inspirational and kept me driving forward for our community. You have been a part of so many iconic events and relationships that have elevated Port Macquarie Hastings on the national and global stage. Ironman and Touch Football are just two of the major events you have supported – what are the standout moments? One of my passions is events, whether it is business related like conferences and seminars or sporting events, school formals, and entertainment to name a few. I worked for Port Macquarie RSL Club for 34 years and have been fortunate to be involved with all of these activities. The Touch Football State Cup has been calling Port Macquarie its home for over 33 years and the impact on our local economy has been impressive. Ironman draws competitors and their families from every corner of the world and the footage derived from the event is shown to a global audience.

Conferences draw delegates initially to the conference itself, but many come back to Port Macquarie as their favourite holiday destination with many of our tourists choosing to become residents.

I could have never attained the outcomes I have without my family, the Tourism Association members, the Port Macquarie Hastings Council and the community members who believed in the value of tourism.

Major entertainment touring events have used our region as a base for many years. We were fortunate to have hosted one of the last tours of the Johnny Farnham Show which was held in Westport Park and attracted fans from across the nation. Westport Park continues to be a drawcard for these events. Would you describe yourself as someone who follows your heart or your head when it comes to business, or is it a bit of both? I am a very practical person but am driven by activities that contribute to the lifestyle of our over 82,00 strong community. I am passionate about our town and will always work to make a difference. Organisations like Bravehearts and the Salvation Army, to name a couple inspire me to contribute and make a difference.

When you started in the tourism and hospitality industry back in 1982 how did you envision you would make an impact on our community?

Initially I just wanted to contribute, but I soon realised that I could offer my skills to help build a strong tourism association and visitor economy. With a culmination of many people’s efforts I think we have achieved that. I could have never attained the outcomes I have without my family, the Tourism Association members, the Port Macquarie Hastings Council and the community members who believed in the value of tourism.

How instrumental have sages and critics been in the evolution of your career? What is the most valuable lesson/s they taught you? I have been very lucky over the years to have had many mentors and I believe that being able to learn from their life experiences is the most valuable lesson you can accomplish. I could never have achieved this on my own; we always need a team of driven people with similar vision. Janette, you are an absolute inspiration to so many in our community – you give yourself in so many voluntary roles to the betterment of Port Macquarie. What are your hard-earned pearls of wisdom for the next generation of leaders in the tourism industry?

What has been your greatest challenge and greatest achievement?

Willing&Able ALL TOGETHER IN JINDALEE

Our plan for 2023 was about looking for ways to strengthen our community ties, share our good news stories and give back to a community that is so loyal and supportive of us.

W

e are pleased to say that our community relationships have continued to grow and flourish, and we are ever thankful to the many local businesses and individuals who constantly support us in so many ways. We have continued exploring the Social Enterprise concept, and researched opportunities to expand our positive environmental impact by advancing our recycling and reuse effort. In an effort to create a more cohesive team, allowing for more job rotation within our supported employee team and better supervisor support levels, we have relocated our Renovation and Recycling Warehouse, Return and Earn Centre and Woodwork to 38 Jindalee Road…….directly across the road from our well known Op Shop. The move has been a mammoth effort with all team members going above and beyond to keep the businesses operating. By combining our like businesses together we

are also hoping to create a better shopping experience for our customers. The relocation of Woodwork will allow for an expansion of the Op Shop. Over the next 3 months the shopping area of the Op Shop will almost double in size and our back-end sorting areas and workspaces will become more structured and organised, allowing for more training opportunities, work types and new employees. A win win for all! All now located at 38 Jindalee Road, Port Macquarie : • Renovation and Recycling Warehouse • Return and Earn Centre • Woodwork Section OFFICIAL GRAND OPENING DAY (TO SAY THANK YOU TO THE TEAM AND THE COMMUNITY) 22nd November 2023 - One day only half price super sale day (Op Shop and R&R). STUART

GOODFELLOW Stuart Goodfellow has an impressive background in business here in Port Macquarie, and for many years has wanted to complete the AICD Company Director’s Course which, until now, has only been available in major cities. Stuart has joined forces with Business Port Macquarie, Charles Sturt University and the AICD to organise the first offering of this course in a regional area, right here in PM!

H

i Stuart. Can you give us a little insight into your background in business?

I’m Stuart Goodfellow, Managing Partner of Regional Business Specialists. We are a business coaching practice of 15 years based in Port Macquarie. Clients are established business owners who are looking to break through the plateau that is holding them from getting to the next level. Our clients are from diverse industries and include manufacturers, wholesalers, trades, and agribusiness. Business owners we work with seek insights in accelerated growth, acquisition, succession, and/or exit. The common ground which underpins these businesses is that they are regional-based and are net-exporters, i.e., they sell more to customers outside of their postcode than within the postcode. You will find me equally at home in your boardroom, in your office or on your factory floor. I am also a published author. When did you first become familiar with the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) and what sparked your 94 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

interest in their courses and training? In addition to the business coaching practice, I have been on for-profit and not-for-profit boards for many years. I invest heavily in my continuing business education. One item that has been on my learning-bucket-list for a long time is completing the AICD Company Director’s Course. The nearest one is in Sydney and is often booked out months in advance. It made me think, “what if we could hold it locally?” Normally these courses are only available in major cities, but you have managed to work with the AICD by making one available here on the Mid North Coast. Can you tell us about the process of getting this to happen? Through Business Port Macquarie, our local Chamber of Commerce, we asked members

and neighbouring business chambers if they, or their members, were interested in undertaking the Company Director’s Course. We were overwhelmed with an amazingly positive response. We also approached the AICD to gauge their appetite to support regional NSW and they jumped at the concept. Charles Sturt University is another partner who is close to Business Port Macquarie. They too have graciously offered to host the intensive course in October. All we had to do was join the dots. We now have the largest director membership organisation in the world coming to Port Macquarie. What will be involved in completing an AICD course and who is it open/suited to? The joint effort between Business Port Macquarie, the AICD and CSU, aims to equip business owners and directors with

essential skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the complexities of the modern business environment. With a shared vision of empowering business leaders, the partnership will deliver the highly acclaimed AICD Company Directors course to address the specific needs of the regional business landscape. Through this collaboration, we aim to provide our local business leaders with the tools and expertise needed to drive sustainable growth, resilience, and innovation in our region. The partnership marks a significant step towards cultivating a robust network of skilled and knowledgeable business leaders, reinforcing the region's position as a hub of entrepreneurial excellence. The course consists of 60-70 hours of precourse work. This includes theory, case studies and review questions which are delivered on paper and online through the ACID portal, and that’s just the start. The intensive part is next. The 5-day classroom style learning environment at CSU brings together a world class faculty to deliver and discuss the key elements of effective board management and practices, but it doesn’t stop there. This is followed up with quizzes, assignments, and an examination. Get through all that with

flying colours and you earn the right to be a GAICD - Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. How will the delivery of this course differ from how they normally run them?

Having a course of this global calibre delivered locally is a coup for regional Australia. The bonuses are the strong links amongst the participants that are made and continue to bond the region together.

The key difference of the course being delivered locally is that it is geared specifically for regional small to medium business owners and NFP’s, rather than a typical larger, and/or ASX listed companies found in the metropolitan areas. Whilst business governance is similar across all businesses, our regional businesses have different characteristics and unique challenges, and many of us are net exporters, that is, our customers, competitors and suppliers are often outside of our local area. Having a regional filter attached to the course is a real point of difference which gives us an exceptional edge. Why do you feel it is important for people to have access to courses like this in regional areas? What do you think will be gained for those local CEOs and

entrepreneurs who are taking part?

There is an enormous amount of highly skilled and intelligent people in regional areas. They run great companies, proactively contribute as volunteers in community groups, and have an appreciation of living and working regionally. These entrepreneurs are curious and value working on bettering themselves. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to down-tools and head to the city to learn. Having a course of this global calibre delivered locally is a coup for regional Australia. The bonuses are the strong links amongst the participants that are made and continue to bond the region together. Do you think this is something that might be made available in areas like ours again in the future? I have no doubt that this event will be a success. Given the interest from all parties, I am sure there will be opportunities like this again here and in other regional centres. Thanks Stuart. GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus 95

Thank you. Our main motivation was to be a part of the town community. We wanted our customers to be able to wander through the showroom to get inspiration for all their window furnishing needs, whilst completing their other town jobs. The space that we have in the new showroom has allowed the Newton design team to create an experience for our customers. We have dedicated sections within the showroom for product displays so our customers can really get a feel for how a product will look in their home. We have 4 sales people who can come to your home. Between them they have decades of knowledge and experience, and they all know about each and every product. Some are definitely very specialised in certain areas, so when booking your appointments let us know what you have in mind so we can determine the best person to assist you. Similarly the staff in the showroom have a fantastic general knowledge about all our products. If building or renovating, we can do all the hard work from the house plans, so you can know your costings long in advance in case you need to include these products in your finance. Coming into summer what is the current wait and installation time for your products? This all depends on your choice of product. Some products you will be able to order as late as December 7th, while others need to

be ordered now to have any hope of a prechristmas installation. We are having a very short shut down over christmas so if you do miss out pre-christmas, we can head to you anytime from the first week of January to get your job done. We can discuss this with you when we visit for your free measure and quote. We have several installation professionals so once your blinds, shutters, awnings or curtains are ready we can have them installed very promptly. For our readers wanting to come and visit the new showroom is it by appointment only? Definitely no need to make an appointment. We are open 9-5 Monday to Thursday and 9-3 Fridays. MONEY with BEC FARNSWORTH FA R N SWO R T H F I N A N C I A L

‘Tis the season to refinance your mortgage’

NOVEMBER: The season to refinance your mortgage - ‘tis right before the season to be jolly. Well, in fact refinancing your mortgage could make you jolly just in time for the season!

S

ome of us may have already started making our lists and checking them twice, however why not also take the opportunity to review your mortgage and save yourself some money just in time for christmas. Refinancing just before christmas can be the perfect time to refresh and reset your finances to ensure that your loan and repayment structure is working for you! To sweeten the deal, some banks are still offering cash back to refinance with them which means you may even qualify for a sneaky cash bonus just in time for that last minute christmas shopping. So, when might refinancing your mortgage be right for you? If you’re interested in securing a lower interest rate. I see so many people getting stuck paying a loyalty tax to their bank by not regularly reviewing their mortgage. I have saved my clients anywhere up to 2% on their interest rate by refinancing their mortgage. If there has recently been a change to your circumstances. Often our situations change and when they do, sometimes our loan products may no 104 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

longer be serving us. By refinancing you may be able to get additional features on your loan which may better suit your current circumstances. With significant capital growth across the Mid North Coast over the last few years you may want to access the equity in your home. You may decide you want to use your equity to purchase an investment property, complete renovations on your home, go on a holiday or even consolidate debt. Whatever the reason, refinancing may help you achieve your goals. So, it all sounds lovely, and like we’re all in for a happy and prosperous new year… and if done correctly and with care this could be true, however considerations also need to be made when refinancing your mortgage; 1. Check your current loan term - I have seen people make the mistake of refinancing their loan that had already been open for a number of years back over a 30 year term. By doing this and making only the minimum repayments you may pay more interest in the long run even if you’re refinancing to a lower interest rate! To ensure you pay your loan off within your original term try not to extend your loan term when refinancing. 2. Fees & Charges - Be sure to understand

the costs associated with refinancing your mortgage and ensure that your interest savings and any potential cash back outweighs those costs. Of course, refinancing isn’t always about saving money and there may be other drivers impacting your decision, but if saving money is your main driver for refinancing, then make sure you understand the costs involved of moving from one bank to another. 3. Make sure you’re comparing apples with apples - Each bank offers its own product suite. Each product in that bank’s offerings usually has a unique set of features. When refinancing, be sure to understand what exactly you are getting with your shiny new loan. So deck the halls, and while you’re there review your finances and your loan! Get ahead of the game and be prepared this christmas. Work on your christmas present budget to know exactly how much you have to spend and where possible try not to use credit to pay for your gifts! If you are interested in reviewing your mortgage to see if refinancing could benefit you, then feel free to reach out on 0421 287 386 or visit www.farnsworthfinancial.com.au and complete a home loan health check!

MODERN TROPICAL INTERIOR DECORATION:

A

BRINGING THE TROPICS TO CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIA

ustralia, a land of diverse landscapes and climates, has always had a unique way of embracing interior design trends from around the world and in recent years, there's been a noticeable shift towards modern tropical interior decoration. Open House Furniture is at the forefront of this design revolution. With our carefully curated furniture and homewares, we are bringing the essence of tropical living to local homes. Modern tropical design is all about blending the old with the new, creating a harmonious balance between modern aesthetics and traditional materials. This can be achieved by incorporating natural elements like rattan, wicker, bamboo as well as one-of-a-kind oriental furniture pieces into an interior. It's a design philosophy that allows homeowners to infuse a touch of exoticism into their spaces, making everyday life feel like a vacation. One striking feature of modern tropical design is the versatile use of both light and dark colours. It's a reflection of the tropical environment, where you might find the blindingly bright sun and the cool, shadowy depths of the jungle within close proximity. The combination of light and dark hues creates a sense of depth and contrast that adds a beautiful drama to any room. 110 GREATER PORT MACQUARIE focus

When masterfully executed, this interplay of colours helps transform exotic furniture pieces to feel more like a work of art. Drawing inspiration from iconic locations such as Raffles Hotel in Singapore, British Colonial style, and the West Indies, modern tropical interiors often incorporate colourful ceramics. These ceramics, although sometimes reminiscent of coastal interiors, also bring a sense of tranquility and freshness to the space. Teal blue oriental buffets, ginger jars, planters and vases with their intricate designs and rich colour, serve as focal points that transport you to far-off destinations. It's as if you've taken a journey without leaving the comfort of your own home. But modern tropical design isn't just about colours and ceramics; it's a celebration of nature's bounty. Open House Furniture beautifully integrates lush tropical prints, leafy greens, and the iconic palm tree motif into our tropical collection. These elements bring the outdoors inside, creating an oasis of relaxation and serenity. Teak wood, with its warm, honeytoned hues, provides the perfect complement to the vibrant greens and blues, adding an earthy, grounding element to the décor. When it comes to modern tropical interior decoration, luxurious comfort is paramount. Open House Furniture offers a range of seating options that are both stylish and inviting. Our Charleville dining chairs and barstools, for

example, are a modern interpretation of the classic Chippendale style bamboo furniture and are exemplary pieces that epitomise the fusion of comfort and design with their teak and cane construction and beautiful rustic linen chair pads. We also have two stunning styles of linen cold water washable slip-cover lounges that are both easy care and complement any modern tropical decor. Each of our imported and curated pieces are not just products; they're stories just waiting to be told, making them more than mere furnishings. They are conversation starters and pieces of art that truly help transform a house into a beautiful home. In a world where minimalism often dominates, modern tropical interior decoration is a luscious breath of fresh air. It encourages self-expression and invites homeowners to embrace their wanderlust, even when they can't physically travel. Our evolving modern tropical range will inspire you to add an infusion of lush tropical motifs to create a breezy luxurious atmosphere that's perfect for modern living. So, if you're looking to transform your home into a tropical paradise, look no further than Open House Furniture, where every piece tells a story of adventure and style. Stop by our showroom at 171 Lake Road, Port Macquarie or visit us at facebook.com/openhouseportmacquarie.
