_Photographer Profile

Callum Smith.

Callum Smith. Callum Smith is a up and coming fashion photographer, with his sights set on the big time. At only 20 years of age, Callum has a bright future ahead of him – which will include going to live in London this year.

T

ell us a little bit about yourself ... I am 20 years old, and I was born in Coffs Harbour. I went to Bishop Durrit College and left school at the start of Year 11. I have lived in Sapphire Beach my whole life, but I have recently returned from living in Sydney for a year, where I commenced my Photography Diploma studies at a design college down at The Rocks. What inspired you to start photography? My father was a keen photographer while I was growing up. I was heading on a trip to NZ to see my cousins and I wanted to take a camera with me, so I decided to buy a DSLR camera. Since then, taking photos has just amazed me. Photography just felt like the right fit for me, and there was this inside drive which then pushed me to study it. You shoot a variety of subjects, but what’s your favourite thing to photograph? I started out taking surf photography when I first picked up a camera. My dad handed down to me a 500 mm lens, which is great for sport photography. I had a lot of friends who surfed, so I was always down at the beach taking photos of them, and then I would run home and edit them and show everyone. Since then I have matured, and I feel that fashion photography is my strength. What is it about fashion photography that intrigues you? Fashion photography is always changing, just like fashion does in general. So when I go to do a shoot, I feel that I need to adapt to the changes in fashion. I have always been intrigued by fashion, and I feel I can relate to it quite well. Finding the perfect location is what I love about it. Driving around and looking for secret little places to do a shoot gives me such a buzz! I feel that finding a great place makes my images stand out. On another note, the girls and the garments are also are huge factor when it comes to taking a great image. To me it’s a challenge, which I love to battle from the start. Polack. Local tennis coach, Tony Polack, is now one of Australia’s highest qualified coaches, after recently completing a high performance course with Tennis Australia. He tells us more about his comeback to coaching. hat is your background as a tennis coach? When I first came to Coffs Harbour in 1980, I coached for 12 years, full-time. In that time I coached 2 national top ten players and some state rank players, but after 12 years decided that I needed to spend more time with my family. So I stopped coaching full time, but I continued to coach the North Coast regional squad. What do you love about coaching? I love seeing kids improve. Whether they’re naturals or they have little or no ball sense, just getting them to the stage of playing comps gives me as much pleasure as taking good kids to a higher level. You returned to full time coaching 12 months ago ... Yes, I started again in February last year, and I only had about 4 kids before that. They are older now (15 - 17), so I’m starting again with 50% of my juniors aged between 6 and 12. They are basically beginners and they have been coming for 3 terms, since I started coaching again. We now have 120 juniors coming, and it is building nicely. My aim now is to group them into the ones who look like they are going to be good players and start running programs for them and then keep my Saturday morning juniors going as well. You recently became qualified as a High Performance Coach through Tennis Australia? Because I knew I was going back into coaching again full-time, and because I hadn’t done a lot of coaching in the last 10 years, I wanted to make sure that my knowledge was up to date. This High Performance Coaching Course with Tennis

It surprised me now. We started about 6 months ago and to learn that fitness coaching for soccer is called it Aerobics Tennis.

It was just a way for adults to have a fun fitness session, without going indoors to a gym. The sessions are held outdoors; we do it to music. I’ve got heart rate monitors that I give to every participant at each session, and I can tell if they are training in a safe zone for their own fitness level. While it’s a great fitness program, it’s also a social outing. In the Cardio-Tennis program there’s a group of 6 to 8 ladies, men or mixed on a court having a great time playing tennis related games, but the activity is non-stop for an hour. Do participants have to be any good at tennis to join in? You don’t even have to have your own tennis racquet! It doesn’t matter if you haven’t picked up a racquet before at all – the sessions are run for all tennis abilities. We use modified balls which are softer and much slower, so it doesn’t matter if we have a good player and someone who has never picked up a racquet before – they will get exactly the same benefit out of the sessions. How can people find out more? I can be contacted directly on 0428 454 928. Thanks Tony.

F E S T I VA L he Bellingen Readers & Writers Festival is in its second year. What developments have you made to the event this year?

T

We are retaining our vision to create an annual regional festival in an intimate setting, which focuses entirely on Australian, regional and local authors and is unique among other literary festivals in valuing local indigenous involvement, staging festival events using the region’s rich natural environment and offering schools in the region the opportunity to allow their students to meet some of the festival guests in a classroom setting. In 2012, the main festival is expanded from two to three days, the number of guest authors from just over 30 to more than 50, the number of festival sessions and events from 30 to 42 and the number of workshops for aspiring writers from four to six. The range of special events in an environmental setting has broadened to include not only poetry walks in the Dorrigo Rainforest, paddling with a poet and ‘Talking Stones’, but also surfing and surf stories at Valla Beach and weaving stories on the banks of the Bellinger River. A new youth writing competition, ‘Shopfront Shorts’, is being run for young people aged 13 25. Finalists will have their story or poem shown in one of the shop windows of Bellingen. Who are some of the standout authors presenting at this year’s festival? That’s a very difficult question, because almost everyone would give a different answer. Because we want to engage readers of all ages, backgrounds and tastes, we aspire to putting a program together accordingly. Our website has a full list of authors and their achievements. What’s on the program for this year? On Sunday 18 March, in the lead up to the festival, a very special marathon reading of our patron

Peter Carey’s novel Oscar and Lucinda will be held at Gleniffer Hall, next to the small church that inspired the novel. The Saturday Literary Lunch will feature Robert Drewe as speaker. The very successful Poetry Slam has been incorporated into the main program and will take place on Friday night in the larger Memorial Hall. Saturday Night Live will feature readings by some of the headline authors, a musical performance by amazing singer/songwriter Andy White and the popular Literary Quiz, with prizes for the audience.

Animal People is a 24-hour urban love story that follows the troubled drifter protagonist, Stephen, through one of the worst days of his life – the day he’s decided to dump his lovely girlfriend Fiona. It’s an exploration of the stresses of contemporary urban life, of our strange and conflicted relationships with animals, and how one man learns that love is not the trap he has thought, but in fact offers him the greatest freedom he could ever have. It also explores the deep bonds that are possible between adults and other people’s children. What’s your involvement with the Bellingen Readers and Writers Festival this year? Thirst: The Film. he World Premiere of Australian feature film, Thirst, at the Chauvel cinema, Paddington, Sydney, was a stunning success, and its creators are excited to bring the film home to screen at Sawtell Cinema in March. Produced by locals, Mark and Megan George and directed by Robert Carter, Thirst was shot in the desert outback of Australia and is being described as a modern classic after packed cinema screenings. Set in 2017, four people isolated in their different ways are trapped, with little water, in the desert outback of Australia. Against impossible odds, can they find meaning, connection, laughter ... even love before it is too late? Kit, a beautiful 18 year old, fostered since birth, goes on the run with 17 year old Zac, the son of her foster family following a near fatal shooting. They head for the desert, where Kit remembers seeing on television abandoned mining huts where they could take refuge. In the desert, living in just such a hut, a woman, Minna, searches for something

mysterious, digging deep holes everywhere. When a mining company employee, Boyce, arrives from head office to take Minna back to the city, several days drive away, she refuses to go. A violent struggle ensues, and the two become stranded with no way back. Kit and Zac, out of petrol, arrive, and the four are reluctantly thrust together to survive. Boyce, a wise-cracking, failed comedian; Minna, intelligent scientist, obsessively searching for something mysterious; Kit, drop-dead gorgeous, believing she cannot love; Zac, crazy for Kit, but with no idea how to connect. Isolated in their different ways, the four are forced to make choices that challenge their ideas of themselves, expose their true needs, and offer the chance to live a whole life in a day.

In Australian culture, heroes are often portrayed as sportspeople or millionaires. They might be a cricket player scoring a double century, a footballer scoring a hat-trick of tries in one match, or an IT technician developing a new generation of smart phones … But the real heroes are those normal, everyday people who are faced with extreme challenges and adversity, but never give up. They fight, they stand strong, and they come out on the other side with a smile on their face and a story to tell.

Stephanie Jackson. Stephanie Jackson is an extremely brave 19 year old young woman from our community who is facing a devastating challenge. In November 2011, Steph was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour (Glioblastoma Grade 4) and has spent the best part of the last 3 months in St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney undergoing treatment, in an attempt to prolong and improve her quality of life. Steph is now back home in Bonville with her mother Karen and younger sister Erin, recovering from surgery, radiation and chemotherapy and working towards regaining her strength. Steph requires full-time care, which is being provided by Karen. As a single mother, Karen has been forced to take unpaid leave from her full-time employment in order to care for Steph and this of course, has resulted in severe financial difficulties. The tragedy of Steph’s recent diagnosis is an added stress to a family already dealing with cancer. Karen faced her own battle with lung cancer in 2010; as she had never smoked in her life, this was a major shock – and now sadly only the first obstacle to be faced by this family. Steph has a wish to travel overseas if she is able, and it is our intention to do everything we can to ensure her wish is granted, as well as assist Karen financially while she is caring for Steph full time. Several of Karen and Steph’s friends and colleagues are working together to host a fundraising evening at Park Beach Surf Club on Thursday 22 March. Her latest work is a fictional account of the lives of real people & events prior to and during the rise of the Nazis and the ensuing horror of war and mass extermination. Fleeing Nazi repression, a group of like-minded German intellectuals find themselves exiled in London where in relative safety, they attempt to fight against the Nazi regime. At times they feel powerless in the face of events that are unfolding with such devastating consequences in their homeland and elsewhere. The narrative is relayed by the two main protagonists, Ruth and Ernst. Political events are contrasted with personal experiences and emotions, as the members of the group struggle with the uncertainties of love, trust & guilt. Some will display courage and fortitude, but there is also an ever-present sense that weakness and betrayal will emerge triumphant. A gripping, engaging story about events that shaped the 20th century, Funder’s work is also full of insight into the contradictions and nature of human behaviour and the frailty of memory.

Harmony Day

hat is Harmony Day? Harmony Day is celebrated nationally every year on March 21. It was established by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and gives people the opportunity to celebrate what makes each Australian unique and share what we have in common. The continuing message for Harmony Day in 2012 is that Everyone Belongs, which means all Australians are a welcome part of our country, regardless of their background. It’s a time to reflect on where Australia has come from, recognising the traditional owners of this land. It’s also about community participation, inclusiveness and respect – celebrating the different cultures that make Australia a great place to live. The Multicultural Harmony Festival is the City’s way of celebrating Harmony Day and our community’s cultural diversity. Tell us about the 2012 Multicultural Harmony Festival held here on the Coffs Coast. Now, a year and a half later, the average is in excess of seven thousand hits per day. Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium has done it again! With the generous assistance of Arts NSW and support from the Musica Viva Countrywide Program, Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium is delighted to bring residents of the Coffs Coast the 2012 Sunday Soundscapes concert series. Sunday Soundscapes is a fabulous music project that transports topnotch musicians, performers and composers to Coffs to display their talents on the Jetty Memorial Theatre stage. Ticket prices are really low, so that all the family can explore the world of music without breaking the bank. At only $6 a ticket, including booking fee, these events are cheaper than going to the movies! There will be five concerts in the Soundscapes series this year. Each is a unique canvas of musical sound, from Spanish Flamenco and brilliant brass, through to more intimate performances such as the duo Soundlabyrinth. Soundlabyrinth is the brain-child of classical guitarist Roger Lock. It is a concept he developed after his brilliant career as a performer, producer, arranger, composer and recording artist in Vienna. Now Sydney based, Roger uses Soundlabyrinth as a way of teaming up with other extraordinary artists, such as Indonesian percussionist, Deva Permana, and classical percussionist, Joshua Hill. At 2pm on Sunday 18 March, for one concert only, Roger will be joined by Emma Sholl, Associate Principal Flautist with the Sydney Symphony. Emma is a remarkable player and teacher, also with international experience. In 2003 she was invited to perform in St Petersburg and Moscow as part of the World Orchestra for Peace. Roger and Emma first performed as a duo over 12 years ago and continue their collaboration to this day. Another fabulous concert presentation by Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium!

ast month I was raving on about the sunshine and nearly straight after, Mother Nature threw the biggest bucket of water on us all! So I’ll never be your friendly weather girl again! As I write, it’s flipping raining again, so we have to find something to amuse ourselves indoors. This month I switched hats and got the opportunity to interview Jack Thompson, who was conducting a poetry reading at our local Coffs Harbour Library. It was a night not to be missed; to be honest, it was nearly impossible to get a ticket! Before the show the guests got to mingle and enjoy a selection of tasty canapés and refreshments. This night was a huge success, with the many who missed out looking forward, hopefully, to Jack Thompson doing an encore of his show (Jack Thompson’s Favourite Poems) here on the Coffs Coast. I am a big fan of getting the young away from the computer and happen to believe that reading books online is sad. Useful for some I admit, but if you’re able, I think it’s great to get the kids (and ourselves) down to the local library to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy the whole experience of perusing the isles looking for something fabulous to read. You can also enrol in one of their workshops. This summer, they had fantastic workshops for Basic Photography and Time Lapse Photography. There was also a Summer Reading Club for the kids and a Parent and Bub Workshop. The libraries are jam packed with so many opportunities ... there is literally something for everyone of all ages. It may be raining, but there is no need to be moaning about being BORED! For more information, check the website coffs.library@chcc.nsw.gov. au Speaking of being bored ... it’s one of my pet hates (especially where the son and nieces are concerned) when I hear someone moaning about being BORED! I was running around like a flea in a teapot, and it was meant to be my day off. Come on, you know the one ... the women end up cleaning the house, and the men end up with a job list as long as their arm! Anyway, I didn’t know where to start, and I thought to myself: “Right ... no housework, no shopping, no cooking!” So I made myself a cup of tea, flicked on a chick flick and lay on the sofa and waited ... After an hour or so, I was missed by The Husband and The Son and even The Cat, and I heard “Where’s Mum?” Answer: “She’s laying down on the sofa.” Then the surprised question, “What’s up? Has she got a headache?” “No,” says The Son, “she just told me she’s not doing anything today because ... she’s bored!” Here’s to the bored and the beautiful people! Carole, Le Dãin Designs.

enise, you grew up in the Coalfields of the Hunter Valley. What inspired you to head for the city lights and join the showbiz industry? It was the bright city lights of Newcastle Showground that lured me like a moth to a flame for the 1985 Miss Newcastle Showgirl competition! I will never forget being strapped to the back of that Holden ute, 2 occy straps keeping me firmly within the tray, waving at the little people and baby pigs as we passed the animal enclosure ... golden memories! I was such a hit, nearly snagging the crown and being named Runner Up ... that interest just spread like wildfire. Local newsreader, Ray Dineen, was a judge that day and said I had ‘huge things in front of me’, and I really have had a fabulous glamorous, rich life in the arts – performing at Mardi Gras, the Sydney Fringe Festival, Tamworth Country Music Fest, numerous glittering art gallery affairs with Ben Quilty, Annie Liebovitz, Brett Whitely and many more! I’ve also been blessed to perform at many other amazing events like Probus, VIEW Clubs and Rotary.

24 coffs coast focus.

I thank God every day that fate steered me down Hunter Street and into the Mattara Festival of Newcastle that year (where I waved like the Queen with Big Dog). These days you’re a regular performer across the country. Tell us about your show. I sing, I dance, I have absolutely no self monitoring! My mission statement is ‘to bring back the songs you’ve tried VERY hard to forget’! You’ll enjoy torch songs, Jazz numbers, Country love-gone-wrong tales, operatic arias and the music they play in heaven – DISCO! I also make good use of my cordless microphone and visit the audience. What can we expect from you when you attend the Women on the World event at the Bunker Cartoon Gallery in Coffs Harbour? Well, what CAN’T you expect is more like it! What can I say? I’ve been awarded the ultimate ‘Style and Beauty Queen of Newcastle’ for ten years running! The Denise Gold Institute just gives and gives and gives, running competitions like this! You can be assured you will laugh, you will need strong pelvic floor muscles (don’t say

I didn’t warn you!) and quite frankly, you will be jealous of my dazzling outfits and Samoan size 8 figure. Why was it important for you to be involved in this particular event? I LOVE doing International Women’s Day events and this one got my motor running, because it is set in the amazing Bunker Gallery and ART is about my second favourite thing in the whole world, after staring in the mirror ... oh hang on... Anyway, I love art, and this just appealed to me because all the other gigs that I could have taken that day didn’t involve a road trip and the possibility of me scoring a caricature of myself! They’re also paying me, which is lovely ... did I mention I can’t wait to see the BIG BANANA? Thanks Denise.

success. What are your thoughts on the National Year of Reading and Literacy? I think of literacy and public libraries as lifesavers. I feel very passionate about supporting them. Initiatives like the National Year of Reading just give the community another reason and opportunity to drop into their local library to see what’s going on. Libraries are ever evolving, and none so more than Coffs Harbour Library. It is very modern and up with the latest, but that central purpose of free access to information for all remains paramount and is all something we should fiercely protect. When we go to our local library, we should all be very proud; it is funded by the community for the community and serves us all very well. You are regarded as a true blue Aussie bloke who has led a colourful life, but you have shown that it is perfectly acceptable as a man to have a passion for poetry. How did the love of poetry and the written word come into your life? It started at school, and then John Thompson was himself a poet, lived in a literary milieu, and so without any conscious deliberation much on my part, and almost by osmosis, I was simply surrounded by poetry and poets and took it for granted that poetry and poets were part of normal life. I didn’t know any different, and I suspect that for many people of my generation, the ability to recite a poem was well regarded, much like being able to spin any other kind of yarn or having attractive handwriting. These were desirable and attractive attributes to be striven for. One was regarded well, and so one sought to acquire the skills, and along the way I found there were certain poets I liked more than others – just like there were certain novelists. I can

honestly say they became friends for life. You have accomplished so much and received many awards. Tell us Jack, what does the future hold for you? I have discovered that after 42 years, I LOVE performing in the theatre! It’s an immediate art form, compared to film, and there is nothing like a live audience responding to you and you to it. With the poetry I have been doing (Jack Thompson’s Favourite Australian Poems), people know the works immediately. I can see some of the audience mouthing the words to Clancy of the Overflow as I say them. It is a wonderful thing, so I am going to do as many live shows as I can this year. I really enjoy doing it. Where are some of the venues that you will be taking your live show to? Regional venues like the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith, which has fabulous acoustics and which makes them a pleasure to perform in. I’m also doing the Laycock Street Theatre up at Gosford on Father’s Day as well; that is another little beauty, and then in between times, there is the Dylan Thomas piece Under Milk Wood for The Sydney Theatre Company at The Wharf. I am doing that with Sandy Gore. That, plus a bit of filming the Baz Luhrmann film, The Great Gatsby. That will just about see the year out, I think. On behalf of myself and the Coffs Coast FOCUS, I thank you for your time and wish you all the best for the future. Before Jack Thompson, the great Australian actor left our Coffs Harbour Library, he shared something special with the Coffs Coast audience. We all sat mesmerised as he quietly recited a beautifully written poem that his father had written for his mother. The room sat in silence, and Jack Thompson finished his reading, leaving us hoping for an encore and totally enthralled ... coffs coast focus 27

Why are you so passionate about Yaraandoo? Yaraandoo undertakes some unique programs; for example, our Carer Respite Retreats have been referred to by the Federal Government as an example of best practice in Respite. How do you juggle family life with running a business? My husband Jack is also a working Director of the business, and together we make a great team. My teenage children take a great interest in the activities that are run out of Yaraandoo; for example, my 17 year old son is currently assisting me in the design of a teenage boys’ life skills program, aimed at keeping boys at school and out of gaol – which we hope to run this year in conjunction with a Coffs Harbour organisation. My two older boys love assisting our staff at various functions, sometimes as waiters at weddings, other times simply with the cleaning and maintenance. As casuals, they earn good money and learn many valuable skills from our staff. Final word: We have so many exciting programs running out of Yaraandoo. Life is never dull; it is a very special place.

Most importantly, listen to your intuition; this is how you are being guided. Ruby protects us when we are vulnerable.

Set fresh goals, because exciting change surrounds you. Repetitive patterns have ceased, old contacts have left your space, new and exciting friendships are coming forward, and a feeling of contentment for home-life. Career changes can also be anticipated. Amethyst & Citrine or Ametrine is ideal for connecting our higher purpose to our consciousness.

Listen to your inner voice. Your restlessness is quieting, and change is imminent. Pay attention to cycle’s endings and know when to move ahead. Opportunity to express your creative self is approaching, so remain focused until the task is complete. Citrine connects our imagination to our intellect. Resulting in new ideas.

GEMINI. MAY 22 - JUN 22 Relationships will likely be your major influence this month. Instead of engaging in conflict, simply see there is no problem, because there is no problem – and then there is no problem. Do not allow another to extract negativity from you. Sugilite helps us to trust where love is concerned.

‘Moving into the unknown without fear’ needs to be placed somewhere prominent, just as a reminder that you needed and wanted change for such a long time but you had to wait for the perfect timing. Well, here it is! It’s time for you to prioritise yourself for once. Enjoy! Rose quartz the crystal of love, connects us to our own heart energy.

Try and let go of that pessimistic streak that allows you to fall softly if things don’t work out, and recognise how clever you are at manifesting your thoughts. Once you acknowledge this ability, it will grow enormously. Have fun. Clear Quartz amplifies our self-awareness.

This month should bring forward good luck and open new doors for further success. Stay focused on the task at hand to avoid being overwhelmed. A lot of social activity can also be anticipated. Be sure to have plenty of sleep, and journalize your dreams. Citrine attracts good luck.

Be ki kind B d to yourself; work out what you want and why you want it, and let the Universe bring it to you. Your time until now has not necessarily been for you; however, things are shifting, so get ready to pamper your mind, body and spirit. Carry some Citrine for a few weeks.

Commit yourself to your fresh goals. They are, after all, life changing attitudes. Avoid being played by guilt games at all costs. To be able to implement these changes to your life, you need to know you are worth it. Be grateful for your higher attributes. Turquoise is a powerful confidence booster.

Sometimes we need to experience hardship to be able to appreciate more the wonderful things to come. You have always known how to get what you really want, and now is no different. Set some short term goals as well as long-term for complete contentment. Lilac Amethyst brings out our appreciation of all things great and small.

Relationship challenges are offering you tremendous wisdom and growth, but it’s important not to get caught up in the wrong kind of detail. Allow your partner to be your mirror, and find out why things bother you as much as they do. Then forgive and forget. Rose Quartz keeps our love strong in our aura.

T

ell us a bit about yourself ... I am a Polishborn Australian living in Sawtell. I think of myself as an adventurer who follows my dreams, and I find new experiences and constant challenges as a way to extend the boundaries of my own limitations. I arrived in Australia in Perth in September 1981 as a single mum, with a 12 year old son, two backpacks, nearly no English, nearly no money and only as a temporary place to stay a very long distance from Poland. In December 1981, when martial law was declared in Poland, I made my decision to stay in Australia to make a better future for my son and myself. I learnt English and then went to do Post Grad study. Qualified in mechanical engineering and IT in Poland, I worked for more than 16 years in Poland. I continued my profession for another 16 years in Australia (in Canberra as a Public Servant – IT), and in September 2001 I retired from over thirty years of IT work and continued my lifelong passion for travel and 32 coffs coast focus.

photography. My passion for travel has taken me to over 80 countries in all continents. I always like the intensity and enrichment that travel brings to my life, and my everyday life is a constant adventure. I love to go on learning, exploring my curiosity about people. I like so much to be in personal contact with all people, sharing our interest, activities and ways of life. At the same time, I value so much my privacy, my peaceful and modest life. Since I moved to Sawtell, I feel that I belong here, because I love the environment, climate and all the people I have been meeting. You mentioned your lifelong passion for photography ... Yes, it was introduced to me in primary school by my father. I have been focusing on the beauty and love of nature and on interactions with people – especially from smaller communities of different cultural and social backgrounds. My photographs of people, especially women, capture unusual simplicity, joyfulness, female pride and humble dignity, as well as depicting their cultural and ethnic ties. I am connecting with people through a universal language, revealing how photography

has been important as a way of communication and understanding of human nature. I held 12 individual photographic exhibitions and have taken part in over 40 group shows in Australia and overseas. At the end of 2001, my achievements and dedication to the art of photography were recognised in Australia in an Award for Visual Arts, given by the Canberra Critics Circle. What inspired you to backpack through Africa? In March 2002 I began my adventure of a lifetime – a solo backpacking journey in Africa, equipped with previous backpacking experiences in fifty countries around the world. I nearly always travelled as a backpacker on a low budget and to be close to the local people’s life. For years, I had a fear of going alone to travel in Africa, so I travelled across all the other continents. Eventually, I left this African trip as my idea for retirement, hoping that my grey hairs and my life and travel experiences will make my journey safer. I still felt young, strong enough to be alone on the more rougher road and wanted to see African developing countries, which are changing very fast. I am leaving more

developed countries for my older age, when I can travel with a walking stick. You travelled across 21 countries in the space of 14 months. Tell us a little bit about your adventures in each country. I landed in Johannesburg, in the Republic of South Africa. From the very south of the continent, I ‘climbed my way’ to the north, through 16 countries to Egypt. In Madagascar, I found myself in the middle of a revolt and worked with villagers. In Rep. of SA, I had first encounter with tribal people, walked in the amazing Drakensberg Mountains and had a red-mud Zulu bath. In Lesotho, I was engulfed in snow and did horse riding in the mountains. In Swaziland, I danced with village women and witnessed the fantastic Reed Dance Celebration. In Mozambique, I was snorkelling in crystal water and the fairytale underwater world of the Bazaruto Archipelago. In Namibia, I enjoyed sliding down the sand dunes of Namib Desert, have seen most of the African wildlife and the admired exquisite Herrero women’s outfit. In Botswana, I had a nearly touching encounter with an elephant’s trunk. In Zimbabwe, I had a magical feeling

looking from the rugged gorge at the Victoria Falls and reflected about African history sites, a world heritage – especially Great Zimbabwe. In Zambia I visited villages, shared women’s everyday and spiritual life and despite the poverty, have been cheerful with them. In Malawi, I had swam in huge Lake Malawi, had a recipe for a medium size elephant stew (using 20 bags of salt!), then unfortunately was struck with Malaria, but survived. In Tanzania, I meandered the narrow streets of Stone Town in Zanzibar and then visited Maasai villages at the foot of Kilimanjaro and Meru Mountains. In Kenya, I saw more African wildlife and learnt about Maasai traditions. In Uganda, I had a good rest and recovery after my Malarian weakness, and then I encountered mountain gorillas in Rwanda, celebrated Christmas and stayed with the

leave Africa immediately. It was not until May 2010 that, with all my determination to fulfill my African dream, that I picked up my backpack again and travelled to Morocco, my 21st country of this continent. I travelled mostly on land, using local modes of transport: bus, car, mini-bus, truck, train, boat, horse, camel, and I covered hundreds of kilometres on foot. They say that a picture tells a thousand words, and on this trip your cameras were your companions. In what ways did this journey enhance your passion for photography? My photographs from Africa are always bringing me not only the visual memories, but a lot of emotions, feel and smell, sound and taste, and many more. My zoom lens gave me amazing closeup of details that initially I

All the highlights of my African adventure are related to PEOPLE, Africans and other travellers, who opened their hearts and their homes to an outsider – a lone travelling woman. I am extremely grateful to everyone for being part of my life and memory. Hamar people in Ethiopia. Coming to the north of Egypt, I was overcome by the beauty of the waste – White and Black Desert – sailed on the Nile in felucca with Bedouins. From there, I set off to Western Africa. First, I landed in Ghana, where I became an instant multimillionaire, with the low value currency, rested by the sea in a fishing village and learnt the cultural customs of the Ashanti people. In Togo, I enjoyed a delicious meal of ‘fufu’ and visited the incredible village huts, ‘tata’, of Tamberma tribes. Burkina Faso was only a short stop and a first scary experience in a Muslim country. In Mali, with a Tuareg guide on two camels, we set off from Timbuktu to the Sahara Desert. The journey to Dogon villages in Bandiagara Escarpment was cut short by a dramatic fight for life, and I was forced to

was not able to notice. I have many photos, especially people’s portraits, that I could write a long story about. You have published an amazing book which documents your journey, Granny Backpacker in Africa. What was it like compiling the book? During the process of writing my book (first in Polish), I realised that it’s become a wonderful adventure of collecting all information and deepened my African knowledge. It was also the rehabilitation process of my physical and sociological condition after the dramatic event at the end. My last African journey and chapter (Morocco) become a spontaneous ending of my African odyssey and completed my African stories. Since my books were published in Poland in 2010, I started another unexpected and

fantastic adventure – meeting thousands of readers. The last part of this has been happening since August 2011, when I self-published my English version, printed in Poland, sent it to Australia and started my encounter with Australian readers. I am very proud to have my first book launch in Coffs Harbour as a local writer and the Publisher of Tidbinbilla Press, located in Sawtell. I am very grateful to Jill Nash and Sandra Lorenz from Sawtell and Jenny Moon from Mullaway for the good will English editorial and proofreading assistance. Granny Backpacker in Africa won the award for National Geographic (Polish Edition) Travel Book of the Year in 2010. Congratulations! What does this mean to you? For me, the nomination by the National Geographic, Polish Edition jury was a great honour. I was very grateful and surprised that I received so many votes by the readers – especially when I live so far away. TRAVELERY 2010 is the most prestigious traveller’s award in Poland. The prize is awarded by National Geographic by Polish readers voting, and by jury, assembled with the greatest travellers, explorers, journalists and scientists who are involved in researching issues related to learning about the world, people and culture. There is a funny side to this award. It’s having its weight, with the privilege of being awarded, but also – it is heavy, about a 2 kg sandstone pyramid, and I carried it in hand luggage from Poland to Australia. Where can people purchase the book? My book, Granny Backpacker in Africa – a 14-Month Journey Across 21 Countries is available at the price of $70 from retailer: COCO 39, Shop 33 First Avenue, Sawtell NSW 2452 or by email and phone orders – basia@meder.net and (02) 6658 4490.

Additionally, I am taking part in the Bellingen Readers and Writers Festival on 22 - 25 March. I will have my book presentation on Saturday 22 March in Talking Tent at the Bellingen Council Park, at approximately 10.30am. It is also a permanent area during the BRW Festival for selling books by local writers, including myself. I will be around Bellingen during all the time of the Festival. Do you have any more exciting travel adventures planned for the near future? As my life is a constant travel adventure, I am looking forward to each kayaking day, usually once or twice a week, bike riding and walking – in the mountains, forests and our wonderful Sawtell beach. I am also looking for more travel in Australia this year. My other travel dream is to go back to many Asian countries. Thanks Basia. BASIA will be holding a book launch on 15 March at Coffs Harbour Library, from 11am, followed by refreshments at the Regional Gallery. coffs coast focus 33

Specialist in skin cancer You often find it best to deal with a specialist, and it’s no different for the checks, diagnosis, treatment and management of skin cancer. Doctor Patrick Brennan heads Skin Cancer Associates in Albany Street and is the only doctor on the Coffs Coast who specialises solely in skin cancer treatment – unlike other doctors, who combine skin cancer diagnosis with general practice or wound management. Aiming to promote early detection, Dr Brennan encourages all locals to have regular skin checks, to maximise the successful treatment of any developing skin cancers. “Our services are bulk billed to pensioners and health care cards, and no referral is necessary. Simply phone the clinic to make an appointment. Regular skin checks are the best way to keep an eye on your skin, and if caught early enough, skin cancer can be treatable.” With 16 years’ experience in skin cancer, a post graduate masters degree in skin cancer medicine and an advanced certificate in dermoscopy (the study of moles through specialised imaging), Dr Brennan is highly experienced in diagnosing and treating skin cancer; he is also able to perform skin surgery of any kind. “We can perform the entire procedure right here in the clinic,” adds Dr Brennan. “From diagnosis to surgery, you have the same doctor the whole time, and there is no need to travel.”

Give us a background on Legacy Nursing Home and the services you offer. Legacy Nursing Home was built in 1972 and completed early 1974. We are a 49 bed high care facility. We pride ourselves on being a ‘Home’ and our fantastic staff. What makes your job rewarding? We enjoy the good times each person experiences, but we are also there when times are not so good. Our joy is the relationships that we develop with each resident, family and friends and between ourselves. We are a team and we support each other, so that we can provide the best care that is available for each and every person. There is not a day when we do not experience a sense of joy from the little things that can occur, and we also gain a sense of achievement for the comfort that we provide to not only residents, but also their families and friends. What are the challenges faced by your industry? There is a negative culture externally about nursing homes, without people really

understanding what happens within our homes. One challenge is to enhance people’s lives during a difficult period in their lives and to make their transition into our home feeling supported and adapting into living in a different community. Another challenge is to entice people into our community and maintain relationships that were developed and maintained outside of our community. A further challenge is to develop younger nursing and care staff into our industry and retain them to enhance the clinical expertise within aged care for the future. Has Legacy Nursing Home experienced changes over the past few years? Our changes have been to grow with the needs of the individuals that come into our home and to be adaptive of the different legislation requirements that are placed on us. What does the future hold? To continue to provide each person with a home and a community. How do families and friends find out more about Legacy Nursing Home? Come and visit; see what our home is all about.

o what is a senior? Well, it’s a debatable topic, but over 55 years ‘young’ seems to be the general consensus and if we are all lucky, we will get to that age and beyond!

S

There are so many senior citizens who are role models for the younger generations … generous and fantastic people to look up to and admire. They can teach us to live with dignity, love and compassion.

All in all, Seniors Week is about showing our appreciation and making sure that seniors have easy access to the information they need.

Anyone can benefit from thinking of seniors as ‘wise guides’ who can teach others life skills and provide guidance. Seniors are often our parents, grandparents and family members, and they make up the fabric of our society. As they say, there is power in numbers and as a group, seniors have tremendous economic and political clout. Seniors Week, which this year will be celebrated from 18 to 25 March, is

about recognising the contributions made by our older people to the broader community. Seniors Week celebrations and programs are also an important way to ensure that information and services are readily available to senior citizens in the community, so that they are able to continue to lead independent lives.

Seniors Week is celebrated nationally and is a great time for senior citizens to connect through various activities that are innovative and creative. The Coffs Harbour City Council has got a great line up of activities this year that are sure to suit all tastes and abilities. from school, me and old Waton the horse would get out there and round up the calves for the night. These calves were big ones, and I got the idea of putting a flank rope on them to get them in … it all went from there. Rodeos were a lot different back then to what they are now though, and I never really rode professionally. You did ride a few rodeos in your time, but your last ride was a bit scary ... It was on New Year’s Day at a rodeo in Tumbarumba, and we’d had a big storm about an hour beforehand. The creek near us was flooded and rushing in. Anyway, I drew this big horse to ride – he was about 16 or 17 hands high, and he had a bad look in his eye. As soon as the gate opened, this big fella got going ... and he kept going! He picked up pace, and I was looking at the ground thinking I didn’t want to fall off, because he was so high! He went straight towards the fence, where all the people in the crowd were sitting. Now… when the horses come towards the fence, the crowd is meant to stay there, because right at the last minute the horse will usually balk and dart the other way. So I was waiting for this horse to do that – but he never did! He just kept going, so everyone got out of the way! The horse and I went between two cars and straight into the flooded bloody creek! Everyone was racing over to check on me and asking how I was going to get out. I said: “I’m going to do the bloody breast stroke!” It knocked about 10 years off my life! That was enough rodeo riding for me! Thanks Ron.

hat’s a holiday without being by the waterside? Ocean, island, lagoon, river, waterfall – as long as there’s water to swim in, fish in, sail on or simply offer a soothing atmosphere and attractive view, it’s my ideal getaway. And so we were delighted to check in at Port Macquarie’s The Observatory Hotel, smack bang on the town’s main beach, Town Beach, overlooking the sand and rolling surf and beckoning us to slip across the grassy park out front, into the waves. ‘Port’, as it’s fondly known, and our own Coffs Coast have lots in common, but we’ve our differences too. A brief change of scenery can be as good as a holiday so, with Port’s proximity just down the road, it was the logical choice for a short getaway we found we could grab. The Observatory bills itself ‘Port Macquarie’s best address’, and it turns out no idle boast. It’s located just across a grassy strip to the sand and waves – no dunes to cross, no thick vegetation barring the views, just fresh salt air drifting through big glass sliders into our apartment, lulling us to sleep along with the sound of the waves. The property’s positioned perfectly equidistant between downtown shopping, but away from CBD bustle, and a whole string of beaches and boardwalks stretching in both directions from the hotel’s front door. Its first-class position is matched by its status as the winner of more awards for accommodation and service than any other between Sydney and Brisbane: among them, best Deluxe Accommodation on the North Coast four years running; Best Property in Australia; national winner Australian Service Excellence. The accolades are borne out by our welcome at reception: warm, sincere and helpful, no doubt going towards securing the

Business

Julie

Jardine. This month we learn that success in business is more than doing the right things. As Julie Jardine demonstrates, it’s primarily a state of mind. here are companies with easy sounding names that describe pretty much what they do. Take Kwik Copy, The Big Banana, Hopwood Homes or Park Beach Plaza, and even a dim wit will glean some idea what these firms do. But there are others whose identity is not linked to their industry, like DKM, Faircloth and Reynolds or Ensign Services. Now these firms make us work harder too, don’t they? It doesn’t seem to matter either way, but for a new enterprise, a name with a link with your industry will make it easier to become recognised through association. But when it comes to this month’s guest, Thermal Electric Elements – what on God’s earth does this imply? For a start, it sounds industrial (go to the top of the class, Paul), it sounds like electricity is involved (more brilliance again) and the ‘elements’ part sounds like industrial ‘things’... and folks, that’s all I have. Part of my mission was to meet with the fabulous Julie Jardine to find what Thermal Electric Elements does and secondly, why they’re going strong when apparently no one actually makes things in Australia any more. Now, imagine industrial heaters that might heat liquids or solids in ovens, high voltage air conditioners, in factories or in mines. The device doing the heating is called the element, and that’s what Thermal Electric Elements design and make. Heating is a simple concept, but the application is where it gets challenging, because the elements are tailor made to perfectly fit a unique situation ... and having exhausted my technical prowess, it must be time to change subjects – like how did it all start? Wind back the clock 20 years, when a very young couple, Michael Basso and wife Julie, saw that Michael’s father, who founded 48 coffs coast focus.

Thermal Electric Elements in 1971, was ready to retire and that the business had the potential to grow. “We knew straight away that we had to change things, because we were relying on just one customer in one industry,” says Julie. Acquisitions provided entry into new industries along with growth, then all manufacturing was centralised at Toormina, allowing for better quality control. I was curious about the competitive environment – whether Asia represents a threat. Julie was quick to respond: “This would be the case if we produce high volume heating elements, but our niche is custom made elements, where the technical expertise is the priority and price a secondary consideration.” There would be many business owners who’d like to be in this position. So if price isn’t the major challenge, then what is? “Knowing what questions to ask our customers,” responds Julie. “They know their equipment has a problem, but often they’re at odds to help us define what the issue is. In most cases, our experience and processes will head us in the right direction – but we don’t always get it right the first time, because unforseen factors arise. When this happens, we’ll modify our approach, and hopefully the issue will be fixed.” It seems that one thing the company is good at is responding quickly to clients. “We have to be, because that’s another point of difference,” adds Julie. The company’s growth has been well documented but apart from acquisitions, it seems that a strategy of targeting different industries continues to deliver results. For example, the company has been supplying elements to the hazardous area industry and has just gained certification allowing access to the resources sector (think mining, oil

and gas) – the only Australian company to achieve this result. Nice indeed ... but watch this space; there is more to come in 2012, Julie advises. Another source of growth has been the opening of new offices, most recently in Perth, and Singapore is the planning stage now. Inside too, change is everywhere, and I asked Julie what their lean manufacturing program was and how it helped. Typically, Julie’s response was down to earth: “Can you imagine how much junk we collected over 40 years? We had too much rubbish sitting around, and clearly it was time to clean up our production areas. Nothing revolutionary in that, but everyone agreed afterwards that it was a good thing to do.” From my days at Kraft Foods, I’ve always found the interesting thing with manufacturing firms are the interdependencies between the various departments and as you’d expect, Julie and her team have not been still in this area either. “It’s important for us to measure everything we do, so that we can get better at it.” Two areas that Julie describes illustrate the point beautifully. “Our production team count the errors made by the design team, and our sheet metal area measure out of stocks. But having defined the problems, the trick is to get them to own it, and the solution will follow.” It sounds to me like Thermal Electric Elements has an internal focus also, relying on team leaders to measure and improve what they do. “We’re known to be a tough employer, and I won’t apologise for that, because our customers are becoming more demanding,” Julie says. “Together all of us worked to define what type of person we want to work here and it was a great

transition, because we had wonderful collaboration establishing a new set of values – which we summarise as P.E.R.F.E.C.T.” Clearly, this has helped Julie and the team agree on what makes the organisation different, define the values that underpin behaviour and then identify attributes to look for when recruiting. When not rushing around, when does Julie get to think about the bigger picture, because none of the things I’ve described above happen by accident. It must take disclipine, but Julie does allow herself the luxury of 1 day a week to strategy work. She has joined a group of senior executives known as The Executive Connection, who meet regularly in Brisbane to freely discuss issues, opportunities and challenges. “I come away from these totally refreshed and reinvigorated, having listened to some very smart people running much larger companies than mine.” Diversification, process refinement, organisational change and participative management are the terms that any uni undergraduate finds in a text book, yet here we see the theory put into practise with compelling results. Why is it seemingly easy for some firms to have long term growth, when others struggle? Sadly, I did not have the foresight to ask Julie this during our interview, so I put the question to her afterwards. “It is not easy; that is why not many do it. It requires constant change, looking around, seeing where we could do better, improving and adapting quickly. The faster you change, the better chance you have at survival.” So that’s it; business made simple. If only understanding heating elements was nearly as easy. Thank you, Julie, for your insights and time.

Change your mind, and you can change your life, your career, your income and your relationships, which all have an impact on your health and fitness. What do YOU really want to achieve. Set a goal that inspires you and then surround yourself with trainers and friends and family who support you in achieving your goal. Our group sessions are full of fun and inspiring people, and all workouts are adapted to suit individuals’ needs, injuries or health requirements. Nutrition Not all diets are the same. What works for your best friend might not work for you. Everyone is different and reacts differently to different foods, quantites and timing of meals. Eating fresh unprocessed meat and vegies, eggs, nuts and seeds and avoiding foods full of sugar and starch is a good place to start. Then write down everything you eat and how much and how it makes you feel. If you feel light and full of energy, keep it in your diet. If you feel heavy and sluggish and tired, get rid of it. Writing it down takes time and effort, but once you eliminate the food that doesn’t work for you, your weight and health and fitness will improve dramatically. Rest and Relaxation Sleep is especially important to your

health and fitness and even your weight loss. Getting enough sleep allows your body to repair itself after the exercise and strength training you may have done during the day, but it also allows the body to balance out and reduce stress and cortisol levels, which make the body cling to fat. Your body needs time to recover and heal itself to be fit and healthy, so avoid too much TV or computer before bed and get a good night’s sleep. When you are tired, you also make food choices like muffins and coffee instead of chicken and vegies, because your body wants a quick fix, but sugar and caffeine will leave you hungrier and more tired as your blood sugar crashes. Stress Less Don’t let your diet and exercise become just another stress in your life. If you miss a workout or eat a hamburger and coke, don’t beat yourself up and don’t give up. Pick yourself up and start again. Adding Yoga or relaxing walks on the beach or playing with your kids in the park to your fitness program allows your body to destress and balances fat burning or fat storage hormones.

We’d construct pergolas (obviously) along with decks, retaining walls, pools, general landscaping. You then started your own business, didn’t you? Yes. In 1996, after gaining my qualifications, I went out on my own and started up Dawes Landscaping. I continued up until 2006, when I went in search of something different. Though still in construction, I commenced work for another local company, Swimplex, who were responsible for upgrading the town pool a couple of years ago. But now you’re back running Dawes Landscaping again? Yes, now I am ready to return on a more permanent basis and fire up my old business again. It was (and still is) a thrill to work with clients from the idea stage right through to the completion of the project. When I started landscaping, a house and land package was $140,000, and spending ten grand on your backyard ran you the risk of over capitalising. However, today the value and equity is in the houses. Combined with the trend to bring the outdoors indoors, having a deck or paved courtyard built is now affordable and will only add value to a property.

smart choice. Is Your Income Protected? In the event of you not being able to continue working for an extended period of time, ask yourself this question: “If I became ill or had an accident tomorrow and could not work for 12 months, how would I be placed financially?” Most of us have no hesitation in insuring our cars, house, personal effects, pets, etc. so why wouldn’t we insure our most important asset, our income, for without it we cannot continue to lead anywhere near the lifestyle we desire. Unfortunately, statistics reveal that most Australians are, in fact, underinsured. A key reason for the underinsurance problem is Australian’s lack of responsibility and lack of knowledge. But it was my own awful experience with stress related acne that opened a new door for me. I couldn’t fix my own skin problems with my salon products and facials; I had to look deeper. Thankfully I achieved this, with the help of a naturopath who introduced me to wildflower essence therapy. The essences had an instant calming effect on my emotions, and this inner calm was reflected in my skin. Within six short weeks, my cystic acne was cleared! This very personal experience ignited my passion for natural healing, and in my own salon I began combining healing therapies with my professional beauty products. This holistic approach to beauty is the philosophy on which I created my own skincare company – heritagehealers holistic skin care. The best advice I can give is to INVEST in your skin – all too often we splurge on the designer handbag, but what’s more important, an accessory or your face? Birds Design suggest to follow these design basics.

There are many homes built in the ‘70s, ‘80s or ‘90s that show very poor thermal performance, becoming too hot in summer and too cold in winter and providing no comfort, despite sky-high electricity cost. A room may need to be added, bathrooms or the kitchen may need an upgrade, the house may need opening up to bring in more light, connect it better to the garden or add shading devices to protect it from the sun. You could have a water feature running right through your house or add a ‘green wall’ on the outside, or you may simply need to adjust the house to the needs of an older person. So many possibilities! How to go about it? And how much will it cost? A Pre-Design report from Schimminger Architects will answer all those questions for you and map out the path to success for your project.

Making the Most of It – Whether it’s a block of land or an opportunity, this approach can be very worthwhile, even in today’s uncertain times. And this attitude has been applied to No 1 Gordon Street – not only in the design of the building, but also in the landscaping.

e The Open Hous is e On r at Numbe a great publicity and fundraising opportunity for CCCi.

THE BUILDING: The block of land is zoned R2 and very close to the CBD, so the flexible floor plan gives lots of options! While the house has been designed with 4 bedrooms plus office and a separate flat for an elderly relative with limited mobility, the top 2 levels can be utilised as a luxury 3 BR ‘apartment’ with internal access to the 2 car garage underneath. There are spectacular views north across Coffs Harbour from the living areas and balcony, so the rental income from this apartment, when combined with the remaining office, master bedroom, and aforementioned self contained flat, could generate a good return to offset the cost of the development. LANDSCAPING: There’s a level path leading from the front gate to the covered entry, with the beginnings of a lush garden already established beside the house and space for potted orchids near the cascading water feature. To the south, the steeply sloping bank and fence provide protection from the street, as well as good drainage for herbs and screening shrubs, which will attract birds. There’s even a small paved outdoor space for use on hot summer evenings. On the other side of the entry, past the apron for the double garage and carport, there’s a screened space for necessities such as the clothes line, bins, and tools, with lawn providing extra off street parking. The terraced vegetable garden will be netted later, and the glorious Poinciana offers natural shade for many more orchids. There’s even a fenced yard for the chickens, with citrus trees planted along the property’s boundary. All of this has been achieved on a block just over 700 sq

metres in size. If you don’t believe it is possible, make the most of the Open House on 10 March, and see for yourself! Check Before You Buy – always a good policy, and the Open House on 10 March at No.1 Gordon Street provides a chance to do just that! The copyright for this unique architect designed house has been gifted to a local charity to be used for fundraising, and design studio 22 will be happy to help anyone wishing to use or modify it. So you can walk through your dream home to get a feel for its spaciousness and how you can adapt it to your own needs. It’s a great plan! While there, check out the workmanship of the builders and tradespeople, find out about new products, and talk to the owner – there’s nothing like a personal recommendation. FUNDRAISING FOR COFFS CARING COMMUNITY INC. This tax deductible charity supports and funds programs that help local disadvantaged families and young people change their lives. Coffs Caring Community Inc. is making a real difference. To find out more, visit www.coffscc.org.au or call Margaret 6651 3667. The Open House at Number One is a great publicity and fundraising opportunity for CCCi, and they are planning a sausage sizzle with tea and coffee and home baked treats, all available in the garage. There’s lots of space, even if it is wet. There’ll also be sturdy herbs and established plants (at very reasonable prices) which have been lovingly potted by our green-thumbed volunteers. So make time on Saturday 10 March to visit the Open House between 11am and 3pm, get ideas, and support your community. It’s all about helping each other, and we’d love to meet you!

real Te ites or ‘White ants’ ? he first piece of advice we give our customers when they call up and report that they think they may have termites is firstly ... do not disturb the suspected site and secondly, always call in the services of a professional licensed Pest Technician. Early detection is a must, and a simple termite inspection can save you literally THOUSANDS! Below are some answers to frequently asked questions we have been asked about regarding termites over the last 25 years that we have been operating. Many insects are confused with termites – especially ants! Termites are sometimes referred to as ‘white ants’ because of their pale appearance. That is why it is always advisable to have a full termite inspection done on the property as soon as possible, so as to identify if the problem is actually active termites and not something less destructive. The home owner can discourage termites by remembering these facts: • Termites are attracted to wood, so remove potential termite food away from buildings. Their food can include: timber stacks, old stumps, building refuse and garden decoration, such as sleepers and logs. • Remember, timber can be treated to prevent Termite attack, and some timbers are naturally resistant. Always use treated or naturally resistant timber when it is in contact with, or close to, soil. • Termites are attracted to moisture, so fix leaking pipes, drains and showers etc. They also prefer humid conditions, so keep the air under your house dry by improving sub-floor

ivan beros. ventilation and drainage. • When constructing a building, ensure the concrete slab is properly designed, compacted and cured, as termites cannot chew through properly laid concrete. • As mentioned, always arrange regular inspections at least once a year and twice yearly in warmer areas. Try to arrange inspections during periods of high termite activity, which is early spring to late summer. • We recommend that you keep the edges of the house (slabs, foundations, piers and stumps) clear of clutter, including garden beds and vegetation. • Country to Coast Pest Control has extensive training in inspecting properties for termites. Our latest termite detection tools go hand in hand with our fully licensed, insured and experienced Pest Technician. • It is not advisable for home owners to inspect and attempt to treat their termite problem themselves. In past experience, we have been called out to rectify many ‘DIY Termite Treatments’, only to find that not only has the treatment failed, but has ended with additional structural damage and cost the home owner so much more than necessary. Australia is a big and varied country, from cooler temperate climates to wet tropical ones ... it seems like we have had all of these in one month lately! But variation is important to remember when considering termite control. Get the professional advice from a LOCAL Pest Control company like Country to Coast. See you next time, Ivan.

You can tell if agents are active by the number of ‘Sold’ signs they have, and by the quality of their local advertising. Choose two or three agents, and get them to put their submissions in writing. Some of the criteria to consider are: a busy well located office, level of service, specific advertising details, fees and expenses, and a commitment to feedback during the marketing programme. Make sure they show you comparable sales in your local area; no two homes are exactly the same, but compare similar properties to your property. They give you a great indication of what you can expect. Once you have two or three submissions,

If it is overpriced and misses its target buyer range, it may be destined to stay on the market for a considerable time. Most overpriced properties fail to attract offers, and purchasers end up with the psychological edge once negotiations are under way.
