Oak Tree Coffs Harbour residents

Faye and Fred embrace a carefree retirement at Oak Tree After feeling like they needed to downsize and rejuvenate their life, Faye and Fred made the move to Oak Tree Retirement Village Coffs Harbour from their large four-bedroom home in February and have been enjoying a relaxed, independent lifestyle ever since. “We’d been contemplating moving for a while because the house was getting to the point where we either had to spend more money on it or sell it, and we knew we really didn’t need the space we had.” Prior to moving in, Faye and Fred attended a number of social events at the village with the other future residents and loved getting to know their new neighbours. Now all settled into their villa, they’re loving being part of a special, boutique community and having likeminded people of a similar age around them. “We love that we can all have our own outside interests, but still be interested in each other and maintain that sense of community”, says Faye. “There’s always a friendly face to wave to, and we’ve all said to each other that if you ever need anything, we’re just across the way.” Since downsizing to Oak Tree, Fred is loving that he hasn’t had to mow the lawn or deal with any

home maintenance responsibilities, leaving him with the newfound freedom and time to do more of what he loves. “I think we’re actually busier than we’ve ever been!” says Fred. “I play bowls in Nambucca Heads twice a week, we’ll often do the Sawtell beach walk or head across the way to Stadium Park where our staffy Polly loves to run around.” Faye and Fred are loving that although they’ve downsized, they’ve still got more than enough space, and their new home has been built to suit their needs now and well into the future. “We love that although we don’t need the wider doorways and larger bathrooms right now, if down the track one of us does, we’re already prepared for that.” “We’ve got everything we need here, and we’re enjoying this new chapter so much already.” Make 2024 the year you put yourself first and start living your ideal retirement lifestyle in a brand new villa with less maintenance and new friendships.

Stage 2 is under construction now! Call 1300 367 155 to book your private village tour today.

We caught up with some of our favourite local suppliers.

C

ongratulations guys on your recent wedding! Can you give us a bit of background on your love story, how you met and how long you’ve been together?

We met in Grafton at a little pub called Walkers Marina Hotel. There were jokes and some laughter and from there a friendship developed. Could you tell us about the proposal? Twelve years ago, we were heading home to Mudgee for my brother's wedding and Mat had planned to propose on the back roads alongside the sunflower fields. We packed the car and

coming back to The Farm at Byron Bay as this has always been a special place for us and we have always loved the quality and style of food that the Three Blue Ducks offers. They have the most amazing orchard there where we did plan to have the ceremony, however on the day it was far too wet so the ceremony was held in a beautiful barn style building they

we were off. Mat being Mat couldn’t contain his excitement, so he pulled up alongside the highway, opposite what was then the information centre in Coffs Harbour and he asked me to marry him. What were the main things you wanted from your wedding day? What were the non-negotiables? Our wedding needed to be a representation of who we are; uniquely us and what we wanted for us and our boys. Laughter, love, good food and memorable moments. Aside from us both turning up of course, the right wedding celebrant was a must. We found that in Sam. Relaxed, humorous, funny and one hundred

and guided us on timing for the day. This was possibly one of the best decisions we had made on the day as on your big day you want to enjoy it and not have to deal with any small hiccups along the way. Our coordinator took care of all of this on the day for us. Once we

Cath Mat

How would you describe your wedding style? Can you give us a little run down on the dress, flowers, venue etc?

Our suits were from Theodore in Sydney and these were custom made and allowed us to have a wedding date and a message embroidered on the inside of the jackets, shirts and pants.

Sure. I would say the style was rustic, yet classic. The dress was from Karen Willis Holmes in Brisbane. She was called Enya and she suited our style perfectly. Our suits were from Theodore in Sydney and these were custom made and allowed us to have a wedding date and a message embroidered on the inside of the jackets, shirts and pants. This was a nice touch. We had the initial consultation with them and the measure up and from there they did as much as they could over Zoom. Once completed, they sent the suits to us. It was important to us to try and keep everything 20 COFFS COAST focus

as local as possible yet we knew this was going to be a challenge being that we were marrying in Byron Bay, however we found some amazing vendors that were happy to travel.

Samantha Dawson of Married By Sam was our celebrant and married us. We could not have done this without her. Her charm, humour, yet seriousness when required, put us at ease. Sam took care of everything for us to ensure that we were actually married on the day. In our eyes, Sam was our only choice, so we are lucky she was available. We chose Freelance Flowers as our florist and Nikki travelled to Byron Bay for us. I have used Nikki for years whenever I needed flowers and as always, she brought together our vision on the day perfectly. Carmel and the girls from Harlow

& Co travelled to Byron to do our hair and makeup. They arrived with all their gear, setup and were like a well oiled machine on the day. What was great about them was that they listened to what everyone wanted, added their expertise and when finished it was perfect. The venue as I mentioned was The Farm at Byron Bay. We chose to have both the ceremony and our reception there at the Three Blue Ducks Restaurant. Right up to the day before our plans were to have the ceremony in their amazing macadamia orchard however the weather decided that this was not the place to do this and we used our rainy day weather plan which was the beautiful barn-like building out of the rain. This was equally beautiful. We found Yellowbull Media (Videographer) and Figtree Pictures (Photographer) as a personal referral. My nephew used them on his wedding day and the quality and capture was just what we wanted. Our entertainment provider was

Hive Entertainment Agency. We were looking for a vendor that could provide both a soloist for the formalities and dinner as well as a DJ for the party that was to ensue. They were able to provide us with both. They also were able to make our own custom song for our first dance based on our story. This was very special. We used many other vendors to make our day special such as Secret Weapon Cakes, the Wedding Shed and Frank & Joy for all our hiring needs. Frank and Mavis provided the retro photo booth for us, which was definitely a hit, especially for the kids. For the

married couple, has anything changed?

What were some of the stand out moments for each of you from the big day?

What was the verdict from your kids on the wedding? What do you think it means to them that you’ve made it official?

Absolutely no change at all, however the memories of our day will sit with us forever.

There were so many stand out moments for us. Obviously, the moment that we saw one another at the ceremony was the greatest. Being surrounded by family and our friends that have become our family was very special. The food was amazing, and from start to finish, the coordination on the day and the rollout of what our plan was by Three Blue Ducks was seamless.

Our kids have always asked us when we would actually get married, and when we said we were, they looked at us and said ‘about time’. The kids played a massive part in our day. They helped with the planning, they sat with the celebrant during the planning, and even came along to dress fittings to help pick my dress. I would take a guess that their favourite part would probably have been the taste testing of the cake flavours.

Alysha Hayes LITTLE GLASS JAR

Alysha Hayes has a longstanding passion for craft and design, and her business My Little Glass Jar came into existence organically from there. She creates a number of beautiful, unique and practical gift ideas and homewares that are perfect for that person we all know who is normally impossible to buy for.... and everyone else you know for that matter!

H

i Alysha, share the story behind the creation of My Little Glass Jar in 2016 and how it evolved from a hobby into a full time business for your family?

My journey with My Little Glass Jar began with my deep passion for crafting and design. In 2016, finding myself with some extra time on my hands and faced with the perennial question of "what do I buy for their birthday?" I started crafting gifts in jars for birthday and christmas celebrations. The positive reception and demand that followed among my friends and family led to a natural evolution of turning my hobby into a business. Venturing into local markets to showcase my creations, I witnessed a growing interest, prompting me to take the next step into the world of e-commerce. Along this exciting journey, I encountered my now-husband, who willingly became an integral part of the venture, even if initially an unpaid employee! 24 COFFS COAST focus

Being a family of seven, including two fur kids, how does the dynamic of your family play a role in the dayto-day operations and creative process of My Little Glass Jar?

The positive reception and demand that followed among my friends and family led to a natural evolution of turning my hobby into a business.

It's undoubtedly a balancing act, and the kids - our ultimate taste testers - play an integral role in the entire process. From packing the dishwasher with jars to opening boxes, setting up market displays, planting succulents, and even contributing drawings for our customers to find in their online orders. As for our furry companions, they've found their niche too. They particularly relish the task of cleaning up the floor after we've been crafting our cookie jars. Everyone, both the human and fur members of our team, contributes in their own delightful way to make our venture a family affair!

In your journey from a hobby to a full-time job, what are some of the challenges you’ve faced, and how have you managed to overcome them?

Our journey has not been without its challenges, with one of the most significant hurdles being the relocation from the Gold Coast to Coffs Harbour last year. This transition compelled us to temporarily close the business, necessitating a re-licensing process in NSW. Unfortunately, this took longer than anticipated, compounded by a few renovation setbacks. The intricacies of managing a family business became evident, making it challenging to take breaks for holidays or even maternity leave. (Remarkably, I found myself back at work fulfilling orders on the very day our daughter was born!)

Despite these obstacles, we've persevered and expanded our reach. We've added more stockists and are actively working to enhance our wholesale presence. This way, even when we do take some time off, you can still find and purchase our products in stores nationwide! My Little Glass Jar offers a diverse range of handmade products, from cookie jars to body scrubs and even Hot Chocolate Test Tubes. How do you decide on the types of products to create, and what inspires your creativity? Our primary goal is to simplify the gift-giving experience by designing gifts that cater to the entire family, regardless of age or gender. We strive to eliminate the common concern of "they might already have this" by crafting unique gifts that blend distinctiveness with practicality and enjoyment. Our creative inspiration is firmly grounded in the fabric of our daily lives. We take pride in incorporating my mother's original brownie and cookie recipes, and recently, we've expanded our lines to include a honey range crafted from my Dad's homegrown honey. Leveraging my qualifications in interior design, I have a penchant for indoor plants, recognizing their dual role as both decor and providers of numerous health benefits. Fuelling our coffee obsession, we couldn't resist introducing our line of scrubs, seamlessly blending our passions into a diverse range of products. Can you share some insights into the

creative process behind developing a new product, from the initial idea to the final product?

After mastering the creation of the main product, my focus shifts to the packaging side of things, a phase that often finds me deliberating and finetuning for a considerable duration.

My ideas typically emerge spontaneously. The development process, especially with food products, involves a substantial amount of taste testing, trial, and error to ensure the perfect outcome. After mastering the creation of the main product, my focus shifts to the packaging side of things, a phase that often finds me deliberating and fine-tuning for a considerable duration. It’s a journey of exploration and refinement to create gifts that not only meet but exceed expectations. As a business located in Corindi Beach, how has the Coffs Coast community responded to My Little Glass Jar, and do you engage with the community in any special ways? The Coffs community has pleasantly surprised us. Since our move here, we've noticed our products appearing in various stores, and the demand has been remarkable. We are committed to supporting local raffles and events by donating our products each year which we plan on continuing in 2024. Additionally, we prioritise sourcing materials locally and from Australia whenever possible,

emphasising our dedication to supporting the community. Attending local markets is not only about showcasing our products but is also an opportunity for me to indulge in supporting fellow stalls. I must admit, I tend to spend a small fortune at other stalls on market days! Are there any upcoming projects, collaborations, or new product launches that customers can look forward to from My Little Glass Jar? In 2023, we had the exciting opportunity to collaborate with major international brands such as Netflix and Unyoked. Looking ahead to 2024, we're gearing up for nothing less than remarkable ventures. You can stay connected with all our latest and exciting updates by following us on social media @mylittleglassjar or join us at the Made with Love Markets on Sunday March 3. Locals can explore our range in person at Kaleidoscope in Coffs Central or Silvio’s Italiano at Park Beach Plaza or online at our website mylittleglassjar.com to explore our unique products. Lindsay Walters is 97 years young and has lived on the Coffs Coast his whole life. As one of the longest standing residents of the area we knew he’d have some good stories and insights into our history to share.

H

i Lindsay. What are some of the first memories of the Coffs Coast that come to mind for you?

Lindsay Wers

I suppose that would be through the War years mainly. I was out in the Central Bucca area. I was working for Darks, the general store on the corner of Coramba Road and Mooney Street. It was a pretty bad time, just over on the flat they had covered machine guns there. All across on the seaside it was all fenced and I had the black out lights I was born on most times on my out at vehicles, with just a small Central Bucca, my strip that showed and father worked in any lights on in houses the sawmill there. had to be covered. When wagon and an army I was working at Darks I went to Central truck nearly ran up the I was driving the horse Bucca school when back of me with just the and wagon delivering I was 7, and when I covered lights on. I did groceries and it had no left I was 14. get home alright but lights on it of course. I that’s the sort of thing was running late one day going on in those days. and I had to go across I was born out at Central Bucca, my father to Park Beach and deliver groceries late in the worked in the sawmill there. I went to Central afternoon and got caught in a storm. I was Bucca school when I was 7, and when I left coming up Jetty Hill just on the horse and 26 COFFS COAST focus

I was 14 and I went and helped on the dairy farm down the road. I used to have to get up and go and get the cows of a morning. I had a pony there I used to ride, but she used to toss me off occasionally, so I’d have to bring the cows up on foot. She used to toss me off and then tear off home! What has made you stay here in Coffs for 97 years and not move away? Well I was working around here, I went

from the farm to my brother in law’s mill in Woolgoolga. I worked there for quite a while, and then I left that and went on to Darks the grocery store. When I left there I went out on the banana plantations and then I went out to Carangi. My brother was working at Carangi Sawmill and that’s when I got married, when we were out there. I stayed there for a while but my wife didn’t like it, so we came back and I started working on bananas again.

until it closed and then I went to Grafton. I would do Grafton to Taree and then up to Queensland. I got sick of travelling home to Coffs after finishing up early in the morning after working all night so I came back to Coffs for a while. My job came up again in Grafton so I went back up and finished When I arrived there after 39 years, I was the police and 60 then.

everyone were sorting out these lions. One sergeant there at the time locked himself in the office at the station and wasn’t going anywhere for a while!

One day I was cutting lantana out on a pole and it broke. I came down on the sharp tool and I’ve still got the scars where it got me. After that healed up I joined the railway. I started in Coffs on a station, then went into the goods shed and then out shunting in the yard. I was there for quite a while until a Glenreagh guard job came up and I applied for it and got it. I was up there for a few years

What are some of your fondest memories?

Well, getting married I suppose. I also have some fond memories from when I was about 14-16 up to around the age of 18. If we had to go anywhere I'd have to ride a push bike or ride a horse. We lived at Moonee around the time, so you used to have to ride a horse from there to Woolgoolga to the dances, or if you came into Coffs you’d ride a push bike. We’ve been tipped off that you have a good story about the circus and a Lion

escape? I was working at Coffs at the time on the afternoon shift and finished at nine o'clock. You usually have to close the level crossing gates there, but because the circus was up in the railway yards, you had to leave the gates open. As I was going home on my pushbike I was coming down Jetty Hill and I saw the elephants and the lions cage coming up. The session master that was on at Coffs forgot about the gates and he pulled the signals off for the train to come in just as the elephants and lions cages were crossing the railway line. Of course it collected the cage and smashed it up and let the lions out. I didn’t know anything about it until the next morning. When I arrived the police and everyone were sorting out these lions. One sergeant there at the time locked himself in the office at the station and wasn’t going anywhere for a while! There was a guy from the railway who had a house not far down the line, and he had some fowls and one lion ended up in there. They certainly had a lot of fun catching all the lions again! Meg Parker Reynolds a rising basketball star from the Coffs Harbour Suns, whose INSPIRING JOURNEY RECENTLY LANDED HER A SPOT IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL IN THE USA. OVERCOMING A MAJOR FOOT INJURY IN 2019, Meg discusses her recruitment, playing with her new team, and anticipations for campus life. Join us as Meg embarks on her exciting international basketball career.

H

i Meg, can you tell us about your start in basketball and what got you hooked?

I started out watching my older sister play for our school team in the Saturday morning domestic competition. The team ended up being short of players so I was allowed to fill in even though I was underage. There was no going back from there, I was hooked from the moment I stepped on to the court, though there was an attempt by my parents to get me into their respective sports. I think the fact that basketball is a team sport and that you’re not just relying on yourself is what 28 COFFS COAST focus

really drew me to the sport as I got older, with the connections and relationships I have made along the way still going strong to this day. You’ve played with the Coffs Suns for quite a few years now and done some coaching as well, can you tell us a bit about your basketball journey so far? I was lucky enough to be chosen in the Under 12’s representative side when I was 10 and was fortunate enough to be surrounded by a wonderful team, knowledgeable coaches and supportive association in the Coffs Harbour Suns. This support and my passion for playing ensured my commitment to play representative basketball for the Suns in

both junior and now senior competitions. Unfortunately in 2019 I suffered a major foot injury which required multiple surgeries and months of recovery. During this time of not being able to play, I was offered the opportunity to start my representative coaching career, when I assisted coaching an Under 14’s Division 2 team. I am still coaching and giving back to the community that has supported me during my time at the club. You have recently secured the opportunity to play college basketball in the USA, congratulations! Can you share your initial reaction upon receiving this exciting opportunity and how it all came about?

Can you tell us about the recruitment process and how you connected with the college that you'll be playing for? I was lucky enough to have had the expertise assistance of Richard Bolaffi from Australia and New Zealand Basketball Scouts (ANZBS). After putting together a playing highlight reel and player profile on the ANZBS website, Richard made contact with his database of coaches. From there I received emails from coaches and it was a matter of researching the colleges and deciding on whether or not I fit into their program. Moving from Australia to the USA for college basketball is a significant step. What made you want to pursue this path, and what are you most looking forward to? It’s always been a dream of mine to play basketball overseas, but I never really thought it would be a reality. I am really looking forward to meeting new teammates and forming new connections, as well as playing the sport I love in a new environment. I am really looking forward to living on campus with my future teammates and creating those connections both I am hoping on and off the court.

that by playing under a different coach, and in a different country I will be able to work on, and improve all aspects of my game and gain a new perspective on the game of basketball.

The most exciting aspect was actually receiving emails from multiple college coaches that expressed interest in me playing and studying at their college. After some initial communications with coaches, I made a decision to set up a Zoom interview with Central Maine Community College’s (CMCC) coach, Andrew Morong, who explained exactly what they were offering me. The final commitment was both exciting and relieving because my dream was finally becoming reality!

Can you tell us a bit about the team you’ll be joining? Have you had a chance to connect with anyone over there yet, or do you know much about what to expect?

Currently there are two Australian girls on the team who have both reached out to me before and after I committed. These girls also took me on a virtual tour of the campus and answered any questions I had about their first and current season at CMCC. I have also been in contact with a girl from New Zealand who will start in August at the same time as me. I have also been able to watch

the current roster of girls play their season, through the use of live streaming, which was also a factor in my decision to choose Central Maine Community College, as my family back home will be able to watch my season as it progresses. How have you been preparing, are there specific aspects of your game that you've been working on? A few weeks before Christmas, I went on a basketball tour with ATC Academy and played in the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Arizona. In preparation for this tour, I worked very hard on shooting drills and fitness skills and will continue to do this, as well as playing with the Coffs Harbour Waratah women Senior team before I leave for Auburn, Maine in August. By going on the basketball tour to America I was able to make that final push into deciding that college basketball was right for me after versing the American teams and their style of play. What are you hoping to get out of the whole experience? Do you have any particular goals you’re hoping to achieve over there? I am hoping that by playing under a different coach, and in a different country I will be able to work on and improve all aspects of my game and gain a new perspective on the game of basketball. I am also hoping that by playing overseas against new teams and competitors, that my game IQ will improve alongside it. By living on campus I am also looking forward to gaining more of a sense of independence whilst also being surrounded by others who are doing the same. Where would you like to see your basketball career head over the next few years and beyond? I have committed to Central Maine Community College for two seasons and am planning on coming back to Australia and Coffs Harbour in the off-season to continue to volunteer and play with Coffs Harbour Basketball Association. I’m not entirely sure where my future career in basketball will take me, but I’m happy to go along for the ride! Thanks Meg. COFFS COAST focus 29

Bruce De Graaf Bruce de Graaf is a local man who has rolled up his sleeve to

donate blood and plasma a whopping 650 times now! He insists he isn’t, but we think he’s a total legend! Bruce’s message is simple; it is a small amount of his time to give up each fortnight, and yet it has a huge impact for those in our community whose life depends on blood donations.

H

i Bruce. Can you share with our readers a bit about how and why you started donating blood regularly?

I would like to point out that I am no one special, certainly no legend. I put my pants on the same as everyone else, one leg at a time....I do not levitate into them, but over a long period of time, I have crossed the threshold of the Lifeblood (aka The Blood Bank) 650 times. It all started when I had turned 18 and my 30 COFFS COAST focus

mum’s twin sister, Mary Lems, was heading off somewhere and asked if I wanted to come. She explained that she was off to the Blood Donor Mobile unit and said I’d probably be too scared to come and donate blood. Challenging a teenage upstart always gets a result....off we went and donation number 1 was in the bag. She then said that she’d done 40 donations and I’d never catch her. Challenge number 2 was silently accepted and here we are at number 650. We spoke to you a while ago when you had hit a milestone donation, and now

you’re about to hit a whopping 650 donations! That’s quite incredible, have many others been able to match that number? Sadly, I will only be the 29th Australian to hit this milestone. I say sadly, only because the donor numbers remain at 3 percent of the eligible population which doesn’t come anywhere near reflecting the Aussie spirit of giving...maybe they don’t know. Therein lies the quest....to tell them. Why has this cause become so important to you over the years?

I only wanted to catch up and beat Auntie Mary in terms of donation numbers. The older I get the more people I interact with and I have met people who rely on us to keep rolling up our sleeves regularly. I unashamedly labour the point, but only 3 percent of the eligible population donate blood and plasma. If we 3 percenters don’t do this, then who will? It’s no big deal for me but it is a seriously big deal for people who require blood products or have blood disorders that rely on us. Money cannot buy what we give, it has to be donated, and as far as I am concerned all it costs me is a little bit of time which I am more than willing to give to the punters I have met who need what I have.

defeating the US team who had never lost that race in the race’s history. The air guitar celebration is legendary. Michael Klim is an Olympic Gold Medal swimming legend who has a rare blood disorder and requires plasma every 6 weeks or so. Michael is now an Ambassador for Lifeblood. I am so happy that we, as such a relatively small group of donors, can help to keep these guys going.

He explained that he required fortnightly blood transfusions and he was so grateful to me and all of the donors. He wrote me a card with 6 words on it which really got to me.

Can you share some stories of some of the people you have crossed paths with over the years that have inspired you to keep at it?

For those thinking of rolling up their sleeves who haven’t done so before, can you share a bit about what the experience of donating is like?

Firstly, there is a wonderful group of people who are the vampires who extract blood and plasma from me. They are the Lifeblood nurses who are remarkable and highly skilled people who are adequately equipped to give back the sass I give them. I just sit there and do nothing, they do the hard stuff, and I am very grateful that they do.

The process of donating blood is so simple, it really is no big deal. Make an appointment, turn up on the day, do a little online paperwork, get your iron level and blood pressure checked then I sit back and read a book.

I was fortunate to have met a guy named Danny who saw a blood bank pin in my lapel a few years ago. He called me a legend which was just ridiculous. He explained that he required fortnightly blood transfusions and he was so grateful to me and all of the donors. He wrote me a card with 6 words on it which really got to me, the Bastard. What he wrote meant that I could no longer take a break from donating because I knew that Danny was out there somewhere and needed me to keep the supply going.

There are snacks for the donors so that you get a chance to rehydrate, and have a chinwag with others who now form your tribe.

I also met Taylor from North Haven, NSW, who due to a blood disorder requires what she calls “Life Juice” every 5 to 6 weeks. Our plasma keeps Taylor able to be a strong mum to keep up with her 2 year old boy. There is also the very high profile plasma recipient, Michael Klim. I haven’t met him, but I know who he is. He has a special place in my memory when he and his mates won the 4 x 100m relay at the Sydney 2000 Olympics,

What are some of the criteria for becoming a donor? There is an online eligibility questionnaire that people can take to check if they are eligible to donate. It will only take a couple of minutes of your time to complete (go to www.lifeblood. com.au) There had been limitations on people who had been in the UK during the mad cow period, but that has been lifted. Just do it, provided you are healthy and well it only takes a little bit of your time....nothing more. There are a number of different situations that someone might need a blood donation, do you know what some of those might be? Cancer patients undergoing treatment are

heavily dependent upon blood products as are people undergoing organ transplant operations.

Accident victims make up a great number of blood recipients, and of course those poor buggers afflicted with rare blood disorders that need “Life Juice” to keep them strong and to recharge the batteries, albeit temporarily. Plasma is also a critical ingredient in the making of Factor VIII which is used for burns victims. What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a blood or plasma donor? There is no reason for not becoming a donor. It’ll cost you a bit of time, which I can attest is very well spent. Over 70 percent of the population know someone who has or has had cancer yet still only 3 percent of the population are regular donors. Aussies are well known as being some of the most generous and giving people in a crisis, this has been shown over and over, but in terms of blood supplies, we are in crisis. Our society needs more blood than is donated and with only 3 percent of the eligible population doing the heavy lifting, we are not positioned well. Roll up a sleeve, donate blood or plasma and give back to the community a little something which money cannot buy. Thanks Bruce. COFFS COAST focus 31

hat is an ally?

An ally is a member of the majority group who takes a stand against social injustice directed at a target group(s). Being a good ally means championing LGBTQAP+ communities, being aware of inequality and calling it out where it exists, and creating safe and inclusive spaces. Above all, it means listening to the communities’ experiences, and affirming and elevating their voices. How can I be an ally? Always try to be respectful. It’s important to be open minded and trust in people’s experiences when they are sharing about their lives. It’s about being willing to learn from them and think about how you might be able to take actions, big or small, to adjust your own behaviours and help create a more inclusive and affirming environment. Using words like gay, lesbian, bisexual or queer instead of homosexual. The overwhelming majority of LGBTQAP+ people do not identify with, or use the word, homosexual to describe themselves. WE SPOKE TO JON STEVENS AHEAD OF

HIS SHOW AT COFFS HARBOUR C.EX ON FRIDAY 23RD FEBRUARY AND HAD A CHAT ABOUT HIS INCREDIBLE CAREER AND WHAT WE CAN EXPECT FROM THIS SHOW.

36 COFFS COAST focus

Hi Jon. Your career has spanned a few decades now, with a huge range of different experiences. Can you share some key moments or highlights from over the years? It’s been a career full of ups and downs, as is normal in the music industry. I guess the career highlight for me is to still be loving what I’m doing, doing what I love. I love to sing and to perform, and to see people singing the songs back and getting a kick out of what you're doing. It’s just an incredible exchange of.. love, I suppose.

I love to sing and to perform, and to see people singing the songs back and getting a kick out of what you're doing.

So yeah, the highlight is just to still be out there doing it, and a long career full of highlights, I suppose. You're known for your diverse musical style. How do you approach the creative process when working on new music, and what inspires your sound? You just don't know what's gonna happen at any time, when inspiration might hit, so just show up. Show up and apply yourself. You can be collaborating with somebody and nothing happens, and then you can walk into the room on another day and it can be amazing. The thing is applying yourself mentally, spiritually and physically. When you’re on the road touring it’s busy and a lot of fun, but I like to put some time aside to plug back into that other side of your brain, so even when you're on the road, you’re always clicking away on something.. some melodies might come, pick up the guitar and some riffs might come.. The best thing about this day and age is the bloody iphones; you can record anything that happens and go back to it later. I’ve got hundreds if not thousands of ideas on my phone! And then when it comes time to seriously start making the record, you find

the bits you gravitate towards, the ones that come easy that you don’t have to slave over. It’s always the ones that come easy, that your instincts tell you to go with, that work out the best.

He would be coming up with ideas so fast that I just couldn’t keep up! I was so impressed all this energy would just build up and you could feel the creativity just flying around! It’s hard to explain. He had a massive impact on how I approach writing and creating, using your instincts like that. Continued over... COFFS COAST focus 37

Your current tour, The Noiseworks & INXS Collection, is generating quite a buzz and will be hitting Coffs Harbour C.ex on the 23rd Feb! Can you provide a sneak peek into what fans can expect from these shows? Hit after hit really; we play them song for song, Noiseworks and INXS, and it's an assault on everything. Everyone that knows and loves those two bands, you can just gorge yourself on the music. I love playing those songs and the audience certainly loves hearing them. I play them as close to the originals as possible. Certainly when I was playing with INXS all around the world I was playing those songs like the records. The thing about being in a band is you can get bored and start rearranging things, changing melodies, until people can hardly recognise the song. I remember when I would go to see artists and they would play my favourite song, and I wouldn’t recognise it, and I’d feel ripped off! That was always a pet hate of mine. MOTEL

You’re only four hours in and this ‘holiday’ is starting to hurt. You’ve exhausted I-Spy (you only know so many synonyms for “tree”) and Spotto has descended into free-for-all deadarms at which your older brother is clearly winning. You’ve stopped twice already for tepid lemonade and mum’s pre-packaged sandwiches in the sweaty Glad bags. Dad has recounted the almost-boughtin-Byron-Bay story for the fiftieth time, and Mum’s taken your sister’s side of the fart-blaming contest.

B

ut a neon light beckons, and with it the promise of a pool (“It’s got a pool, Dad. Right?”), colour TV(!), and a complimentary Kellogg’s Variety Pack with the forbidden Coco Pops and Froot Loops. Ring any bells?

MOTEL is Tim Ross’s and Kit Warhurst’s look at the quintessential Aussie roadtrip and our collective peculiarities. It’s an endearing, sometimes cringey, often charming, always funny look back on our common cultural touchstones, with insightful commentary on the modernist influences of some of Australia’s past (and in some cases, still present) motels and tourism icons. Focus caught up with Tim Ross to ask about his new show and to get to the bottom of important questions like: Vegemite or Promite? Tim Ross: This is a great question because 40 COFFS COAST focus

I’ll happily have a go at both but I only crave Vegemite. Give me a piece of old school white toast and I’ll happily do the old Channel Nine symbol with the brown Aussie spread. MOTEL has been described as a nostalgic mashup of storytelling, music, and standup comedy with a side-dose of passionate commentary on modernist architecture and design. Sounds like an odd mix, can you elaborate. Tim Ross: Ha! It’s not as odd as it sounds. Our holidays are special moments and in the past they weren’t as flash as they are today and there’s a lot of fun to be had with that. I’ve been performing these style of shows with musician Kit Warhurst (Rocket Science) for a number of years now and we have definitely found that these shows resonate with people. It’s a rollicking roll through our holidays of the past and it’s full of laughs, nostalgia and “I remember that” moments.

You’re probably best known as co-presenter of the Merrick and Rosso radio program from a few years back, but you clearly have other interests and talents. Where does your passion for architecture and design come from? Tim Ross: I was a kid of the suburbs and they were full of interesting architecture back then. That made an impression on me. In more recent times I’ve turned that passion into my career. I’ve been lucky enough to write and present a number of architecture series for the ABC. Making these programs continues to be incredibly rewarding. Your partner in MOTEL is multiinstrumentalist Kit Warhurst who plays in a number of great bands (Rocket Science and City Lights is a personal favourite). How do you two know each other? Who came up with the idea: You-and-Me, Yeah, that’ll work.

Tim Ross: We met during our first year at Uni back in the 90's and we played in comedy bands together. Kit also played in a series of more serious bands. We’ve collaborated on all sorts of TV projects and podcasts [Man About the House, Streets of Your Town, Sweet Summer] and he’s composed music for me for TV and radio. Together we’ve written a comedy song for The Veronicas and got an ARIA nomination for a tune The concept called Teenage Mullet Fury. of a motel Who wrote the lyrics for See Men Ride? Is it about anyone in particular?

was imported from the US and they were an instant hit. Before that, most people stayed in guest houses, pubs or camped.

Tim Ross: Kit and I punched them out together on tour one day. Silly but fun. We write a lot on tour or sometimes we do it over the phone. We also often record voice notes for each other to start ideas. Nah, it’s not about anyone in particular. It was just an idea that got into my head at some random moment. In some ways it led and we followed. The Womack and Womack riff just seemed to fit. MOTEL is, in part, about the family holiday roadtrip, and through the 60s and 70s that meant some pretty dire roadside food. Is a sausage in a roll better than a sausage roll on its own? Tim Ross: These days I’d take a sausage in a roll over the sausage roll most days but when it comes to a road trip meal I love our family ritual of stopping by the side of the road and getting out the Thermos and making a quick cheese sango or roll, then doing a wee behind a tree and then moving on. What about about a sausage roll in a roll? Tim Ross: That’s too baroque for a modernista like me. Roadside diner or Mum’s own cooking? Do you remember Deb potato substitute? My Mum had a recipe for pizza bases including Deb and it was probably the saltiest thing I’ve ever had. I’m pretty sure there’s a reason why that trend hasn’t turned up on Tik Tok: the world worked out that peeling potatoes to make mash isn’t the toughest thing in the world.

Coffs Harbour is getting a bypass, the purpose of which is to whiz passers-by past and by. The meandering notion of a roadtrip has been usurped by the urgent need to get from A to B as quickly as possible. What do we lose along the way? Tim Ross: We lose connection to the regions. Sometimes the simple act of stopping off for a vanilla slice can be a meaningful interaction with a place. It makes sense to make safer roads and to ease up traffic but I worry about the little places that need that extra income. What came first: the roadtrip or the motel? Tim Ross: Motels came with the post war increase of cars. The concept of a motel was imported from the US and they were an instant hit. Before that, most people stayed in guest houses, pubs or camped. The motels were the first accommodation to consistently feature rooms that didn’t have a shared bathroom. So I guess motels came first, but the roadtrip helped them spread. Coffs is situated roughly halfway between Brisbane and Sydney and for many generations has been a natural stop-over. Many motels sprung up as a result through the 60s and 70s, among them the Windmill Motel, the Pacific Palms and the original incarnation of the Hoey Moey. What defines the charm of motels from that era. Tim Ross: They are so deeply nostalgic. Motels felt thoroughly, completely modern in those

days and the magic of the experience remains. I stayed in the Windmill Motel on our Triple J Love Bus tour back in 2000. I remember eating a pretty average meal in the restaurant, but it was a fun experience. Stopping halfway and waking up to the breakfast through a little hatch is one of the great Aussie rites of passage. The 70s was probably the zenith for Big Things in Australia. The Big Banana is a point of Coffs pride and arguably it kickedoff the whole big-thing craze. Is there a link between motels and Big Things? The timelines match. Tim Ross: Yes, it’s part of the rise of car trips in the 50s and 60s and the optimism of the time. We had leisure time like never before and those BIG things are a potent symbol of that. Roadside diversions like the Big Banana were, like motels, a chance for a break, especially when trucking kids a few hundred kilometres. More than anything they are fun and much loved. Is there anything you’d like to add, about the show, about future projects? Tim Ross: I’d love to see people of all ages come down and see this show. It never fails to put a smile on peoples faces. MOTEL is at the Jetty Theatre on 10 February from 6pm. Tickets on sale from the Jetty Theatre online booking office (https://www.jettytheatre. com/buy-tickets/) and from the Jetty Theatre Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm. I always loved photography and was first inspired by travel photography, like the amazing images I would see in National Geographic. I bought my first DSLR when I was living in Broome in 2011, about to leave for 5 months of travelling around Asia. I was determined to learn how to use the camera in manual mode and

not just rely on the automatic setting. One of the highlights was seeing the Angkor ruins in Cambodia, but there were so many beautiful places we got to experience. It was an incredible trip. After getting home I continued using the camera for personal use, experimenting with portraits, landscapes, macro photography, light painting and long exposures. I loved how creative I could be, playing with light and texture, the possibilities were endless. It was when I was studying Graphic Design in 2015 and looking for jobs that I saw a

I like to get to know my couples beforehand to feel what their personality is like and what’s important to them, because we’re all so different. There’s always so much love going around, so I like to document all these special little moments unfolding naturally throughout the day so that the couple can enjoy them and feel all of that love after their wedding photographing the emotion and connection between humans, and using photography as a tool to celebrate everyone just as they are. day is over. How do you establish a connection with your clients to ensure you understand their vision for their wedding photos? I always meet up with my clients in person to get to know them, what they’re into, what they like to do in their spare time, and also so they can get to know me a bit and what I’m like. Once people meet me they can see how relaxed and easygoing I am and it always helps them to feel more comfortable when I’m taking their photo. It’s nice to go for a drink somewhere in Coffs or meet where they are getting married so I can envision what the day will be like and check out the best spots for photos and good lighting. I also send out a questionnaire with some questions to get to know them as well, and any details about the wedding that I need to remember. Continued over... COFFS COAST focus 45

Every wedding is unique. Can you share some memorable moments from weddings you’ve been a part of that stand out in your mind? The best weddings that I’ve photographed are always the ones where people have chosen to do what matters to them, what celebrates who they are, and, their relationship. One of my couples chose to have a fairytale themed wedding, where all the guests dressed up, I just loved that! Their ceremony was so unique with beautiful rituals woven throughout, it was so personal and meaningful to them. Another of my favourites was at Friday Creek Retreat where the couple got up on stage and performed some songs for all of their guests, that was amazing! They absolutely rocked it.

I see what time the sun will be setting that day. I really like to capture those intimate shots of the couple around sunset when the lighting is so beautiful.

Can you share some insights into your pre-wedding preparation? How do you plan for the day to ensure you capture all the important moments? Are there any particular moments or types of shots that you especially like to capture?

What I find most challenging about photographing weddings is when things can run late and there’s a lot of pressure to capture everything with not much time! I’ve got used to just going with the flow and being able to adapt to every situation.

When I’m preparing for a wedding I make sure I’ve got all of the details as well as a timeline of the day, which I often help my couples to write so we have enough time for everything. I usually check out the location beforehand so I can have an idea of what the light is doing and where I will take my couples for their portraits. I see what time the sun will be setting that day. I really like to capture those intimate shots of the couple around sunset when the lighting is so beautiful. I always tell my couples that this is their time to just be with each other (ignoring the fact that I’m there!) and it’s always so special.

What I find really rewarding is when my couples are feeling nervous about having their photo taken, then their reaction when they receive their photos and they’re blown away by the images and how they look. I love helping people to see that they are beautiful when they might be lacking in confidence.

What do you find most challenging and most rewarding about shooting weddings?

Editing is an integral part of the photography process these days. Can you walk us through your post-production workflow and the decisions you make to enhance the final images? Once getting home I transfer all of the photos to a hard drive straight away, then it will take quite a bit of time to go through them all and choose the ones I will use. I don’t know

if everyone realises how much time it takes to edit and finalise all of the images from a wedding, it’s a massive job! Then it’s a process of making any lighting adjustments and colour correction, cropping and fine tuning any elements for each image. I also choose a variety of ones that I love and edit them in black and white as well. After being involved in so many weddings and special events, what advice would you give to couples about to embark on the whole process? The advice I would give to anyone planning a wedding is - ‘do you’. This is your day, and you only get to do it (hopefully) once! Throw out the rulebook and do things your way, whether it’s a bush walk to your favourite spot or a drink where you first met - think of ways you can really celebrate each other and your unique connection. Make your bridal party full of friends that you will have fun with! Don’t think about having your photo taken - just enjoy the day and show your people just how much you love them. TOP TIPS FOR AN INCREDIBLE

B A Y

RWedding ESORT

R E S O R T

IN 2024

For decades, Pacific Bay Resort has been responsible for delivering beautiful beachside and resort weddings. A combination of location, attention to detail and experience can set the tone for an incredible resort wedding.

O

ur experienced team of wedding specialists provide a wealth of insight for brides and grooms. If you are planning a resort wedding in 2024, here are our top tips to make your special day go off without a hitch… or with one… PLAN FOR SUCCESS It’s the old adage “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail’ and nothing could be truer for a wedding. Our tip is to begin planning early. Start with a date and work backwards. Talk to your wedding coordinator and discuss the key moments you will need to meet and the points where you need to confirm specific details like attendance numbers, accommodation, size of bridal party etc. Then begin filling in the gaps and lean on your wedding coordinator to help you identify those little things that you might not have thought of. If it is a destination wedding, making an itinerary is essential. Share your itinerary with your guests and your suppliers and factor in travel time, relaxation periods and contingency plans for unexpected situations. 48 COFFS COAST focus

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE & FLAVOUR This one is especially true for those brides and grooms who don’t live locally so make sure you draw on the local knowledge your wedding coordinator can offer. For something unique and exciting, try working with local vendors to incorporate elements of the destination into your wedding, such as native cuisine, traditional music or locally grown flowers. Your venue should have a list of trusted suppliers that can help to guide you. MAKE IT MANAGEABLE It can sometimes be hard to build parameters around who to invite to your wedding. Do you invite the cousins, work colleagues, uncles, aunties, or just close family? While a large wedding can be one incredible party, an intimate gathering can be just as special and often much more personal, with less complications. Smaller venues and fewer

numbers can offer cost savings that can be allocated towards nicer food and beverage, styling or even the honeymoon. Make sure to take the time to think through your ideal wedding size. IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT MATTER As a guest at a destination wedding, it can often be hard to find a little one-on-one time with the bride and groom, so it is super important to make your guests feel special and welcome. Recognise that guests may be travelling to join in your celebration. It might be nice to suggest activities in the area, arrange transportation from the airport or even organise welcome bags with locally sourced goodies and a special note to make them feel appreciated. Ask your wedding coordinator about a guest wedding accommodation package during your initial meeting. www.pacificbayresort.com.au

energy to help get it up and running. Can you share with us a bit about what River View Island has to offer as a venue?

H

i Jimmy, can you give us some background on the property and when you decided to open it up as a wedding venue?

I decided to open up when a few of my close friends had intimate weddings of their own. They had looked at a few other venues around at the time and kept asking to have them here, so we did ... and things have certainly evolved in a hurry in 5 years. We had many great times with family and friends over the last 15 years just camping, fishing, water skiing and having our own mini concerts and cook ups amongst ourselves and quite simply, River View just relaxes you.

love showcasing our Nambucca River as the backdrop, the history of the Nambucca Valley, the stories of milling our timber from the property to build much of our infrastructure, and the belief and support from family, friends and the community has been simply amazing and continues to be amazing. Did you have a background in events or was it this property that inspired you to get into the wedding industry?

What was it that made you realise it could be the perfect venue for weddings and events?

A bit of both to be honest. I pretty much grew up in Canberra until I was 23 when it still felt like a big country town. In that time my family was involved in co-owning a hotel for many years called the Kingston Hotel which is quite iconic down there. My mother was heavily involved in managing functions for the Hyatt Hotel and the Travelodge as high end venues in Canberra, so being hospitable is certainly in the make up with me for sure.

It’s the way that River View is that really lends itself to the natural wonderland that the Mid North Coast and Nambucca Valley is, and I felt it was time to open our little piece of paradise to anyone that loves what we love. We

the past, and continue to have the same philosophy and that is to treat our clients how they would want to be treated in the same position. They will always have our recommendation and belief that they will never let the client down. We have all enjoyed growth in the industry very quickly due to our values and support for one and another.

What has been some of the feedback that you’ve had from your couples so far? A big common one from the very start from their first viewing is ”The photos don’t do this place justice”. We always receive wonderful comments about the atmosphere, the effort from staff and our subcontractors. We endeavour to do our wedding functions once a week because we honestly put maximum effort in for our clients, particularly on the big week of the wedding. What do you enjoy most about having weddings at the property and being involved in so many peoples special days? I enjoy it most when they all hang out and use the venue to relax and enjoy it for what River View was built on. It is about family and friends all getting together and the fact that they can catch up with everyone for up

to 6 days and enjoy the recreational side of our place with skiing and fishing or just using it as a base while they effectively just build up to the wedding day. Some nights I head down to our ceremony area and do a pack down while the wedding has moved up to the Barn Function Centre and you can just hear the most wonderful atmosphere of everyone enjoying themselves up there. It’s really very special and humbling to be by yourself putting a few things away and just listening to the enjoyment of this special time you have helped create. We really enjoy offering the camping side and early access to the venue. This takes away the mad rush of what can really stress couples, of only being able to set up the day before and pack down and be gone by early the next morning. They can start dropping items off and playing with the layout of the Barn from Tuesday (If it’s a Saturday wedding) and then take their time leaving on the Sunday or Monday depending on the accommodation options taken. Have you got any plans or ideas brewing for River View Island moving into the future? As many know down here, I hate sitting on

my hands for too long. We have been super busy turning a few ideas into reality that have been lingering for quite a while, whilst we completed our 2023 year. Our new outdoor cocktail lounge for the barn is built and we are just completing the landscaping around it. Our massive BBQ camping ground camp kitchen is nearly 90% done and will be complete before we re-open in February for our weddings. After our BBQ area is done in the next week, we move up to the Bridal Cottage and create our downstairs outdoor bathroom for the couples to really enjoy a special moment overlooking the Nambucca River. And last, but certainly not least is our River View Paddock to Plate Team taking it to the next level. We have our wonderful balanced team now having our Events and Catering Team under our own banner. The seamless nature of the delivery of a really important part, being the beautiful food, working so well internally with existing events staff, is adding to the service for our couples. On any one night we can have up to 14 staff being in our service roster with our Head Chef, another Chef, and the combined Events and Catering Team making it a really great moment with all hands on deck to deliver whichever one of our catering styles they wish to select for their big day! Tony Rowley, the creative mind behind Titan Sky, shares his musical journey and artistic philosophy in this interview with Coffs Coast Focus.

F

rom his early days in New Zealand, where his love for creativity led him to writing lyrics at just 10 years old, to becoming a singer/songwriter under the name Titan Sky, Tony's passion for authentic expression shines through his upbeat and folky compositions. In addition to discussing his recent work and musical influences, Tony unveils his unique service of crafting personalised songs for couples, offering a tailor-made soundtrack for their special moments. Hi Tony, can you share with us a bit about your back story as a musician? When did you start singing, writing and playing music? Growing up in New Zealand I was creative, I loved drawing and was always tinkering and making things. When I discovered music, I was never particularly interested in playing someone else’s songs, I just saw it as another creative avenue. I began writing my own lyrics

58 COFFS COAST focus

and putting them to guitar around the age of 10 or 11. In high school I sang and played guitar in rock bands and went on to study jazz composition at university. I moved to Australia in 2015 and started performing as a singer/ songwriter under the name Titan Sky. I have since written hundreds of songs; a selection have been released on Spotify and other streaming platforms, with some recorded for film and TV. How would you describe your style of music and performance? Upbeat and folky, with just a hint of country twang. I love writing songs that are thought provoking lyrically, but that also get your feet tapping. I have a bit of a knack for love songs. You’re currently in the process of recording, can you tell us about some of your recent music and what has been inspiring you lately? I've been taking a bit of a slow and steady approach to writing and recording since the birth of our youngest daughter, and I've been

spending a bit more time being a Dad. I've been renting a studio during quieter times of the year and working by myself to produce something a bit more raw and honest. I'm looking forward to releasing some new Titan Sky music this year. The last few years I've been really enjoying a lot of 60's and 70's Rock and Roll and Americana and it's slowly seeping into my recordings. Lots of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Rolling Stones and The Beatles. You do a lot of writing yourself, and also teach music and songwriting (including a sold out course at Camp Creative recently), what do you enjoy most about sharing this artform with others? When it comes to teaching music, my absolute favourite thing to see is the look on someone's face when they realise, they have the power to create something. People are taught their whole lives that creativity is only reserved for special elite or “talented” people. I'm passionate about sharing my love

for music, and I truly believe that everyone is welcome and has something valuable to share inside of them, if they choose to invest a little time. You wrote a special song for your wife which you performed at your wedding, and that has sparked the idea for a service you’re going to be offering others where you write couples their own unique song for their wedding. Can you tell us about this idea and how it is going to work? I have written more songs for my wife than I have about anything else. It's fair to say she's my muse, and certainly my biggest inspiration. She keeps me on my toes and keeps me writing. For our wedding I wrote one special wedding song, but also delivered a short concert of other songs written throughout our relationship. It was a fun alternative to regular speeches, and I thought after that it would be fantastic to offer this as a service for others.

I will then write a unique and personal song that can then be delivered as written word, or even recorded and/or performed at their wedding.

happens when we are attuned with significant people in our lives. We use our body, the tone and pitch of our voice and our breath to anchor safety for a child, partner or anyone in an anxious state. Neuroscientists have stated that as we co-regulate with someone, the mirror neurons in our brains are activated, this enables the child or adult in the dysregulated state to literally ‘mirror’ your calmness. Over time this co-regulation ability to calm down becomes internalised, and the person can calm themselves using their internalised voice. Our self-talk helps in anxious moments. This internal voice provides us with a cellular memory of what it feels like in our body to be calm when something challenging, anxious, or frightening is happening. Research evidence has found that cellular memory is found in our brain and our body’s cells that could hold an imprint of past traumatic events. If we have not learned co-regulation as a child, it can be difficult to calm ourselves down as adults. Co-regulation and self-regulation are part of the developmental process. To move from a co-dependent place to a place of independence, a child needs to develop social and emotional learning with the help of safe, trusted adults. Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself. Julie Thomas MCouns, BPsychSC, BEd(ECTeach) Member - Australian Counselling Association Member of WPATH, AUSPATH COFFS COAST focus 67

MID NORTH COAST D I S A B L E D S U R F E R S A S S O C I AT I O N

We sat down with Michelle Anthony, one of the many hands behind the Mid North Coast Disabled Surfers Association (DSA) to talk about the development and impact of this transformative project. Originating in 1986 with Gary Blaschke’s vision, the DSA seeks to provide individuals with disabilities the exhilarating experience of surfing and for participants to achieve the DSA’s motto of ‘putting smiles on dials’ .

H

ey Michelle, how did the idea of creating the Disabled Surfing Association on the Mid North Coast come about, and what was the motivation to initiate the project? The Disabled Surfers Association of Australia was established in 1986 by Gary Blaschke. Gary underwent extensive rehabilitation following a motorcycle accident, and during this time noticed a need to help people with disabilities get back in the water and back on a surfboard. The Mid North Coast Branch began back in 2007 when locals Bryn Goode and Barney Miller decided to hold a training day to gauge interest for these events locally. Jim Bradley and the DSA Australia crew conducted training 70 COFFS COAST focus

confidence and self-esteem.

While waiting their turn, a lot of surfers and their carers go for a walk or swim, play in the sand, or sit and chat with each other.

We notice this event after event, as everyone is smiling, laughing and showing joy in their own way throughout the day. We’ve had surfers who were reluctant to even get their feet wet at their first event, but with the support and guidance of the carers, team leaders and their group of volunteers, they are now getting on the boards and riding the waves all the way to the beach.

There’s no cost to attend, and we provide all the rashies, equipment, a sausage sizzle and drink for lunch, certificates, and a wipeout trophy for the surfer who has the ‘wipeout of the day.’

This current season we’ve been able to do this How have you seen the association grow through fundraising and donations from local in the years you have been a part of the organisations such association? as Coffs Harbour Rotary Daybreak, My son attended his first Each event Rotary Club of Coffs event in 2016, and I’ve been sees anywhere Harbour, Coffs part of the committee since Collectors Club, 2017. Our surf days can’t happen without our amazing volunteers and supporters. There’s no need to have surf experience, as volunteers are needed both in and out of the water and will be supported by the more experienced volunteers. As well as in water support, we also need volunteers to help with things such as: sign on, selling merchandise, setting up/packing away, washing rashies after the event, writing out certificates, first aid, and taking photos. Are there specific goals or milestones that the association aims to achieve in the coming years, and how can the community support these aspirations? As mentioned previously, our volunteers and supporters are so valuable to the success of these events, so we always welcome new and returning volunteers on the day as well as helping out behind the scenes on the committee and fundraising. What’s the best place to get in contact with the DSA? You can follow us on Facebook (Mid North Coast Disabled Surfers Association) and send a message through there, or email us at secretary-mid-north-coast@disabledsurfers.org Once people register for events, with their permission, they’re also added to our email contacts and will receive reminders about events at the start of each season as well as prior to each event. Thanks Michelle. COFFS COAST focus 71

AGED CARE MISTAKES

YOU SHOULD

AVOID

Moving into residential aged care can be a stressful period with complicated rules, family conflicts and rushed timeframes. This can easily lead to mistakes, which can be costly and difficult to rectify. This article highlights three common mistakes and tips to avoid the traps.

1. Rushing your decision The biggest expense you will face is the cost of your room, which is likely to be quoted as hundreds of thousands of dollars. However, you might choose to pay a daily fee instead of the big lump sum. When signing contracts, many people feel pressured to make quick decisions which might lock them into arranging a quick sale of the home. I recommend you take time to make an informed decision and understand your options.Your provider must give you 28 days after moving into care to decide how to pay. This gives you time to get advice and be prepared. 2. Focusing on just day 1 You need to know what fees you will be asked to pay on the first day of your stay in residential care. But this is just your starting point as your fees change over time.

Decisions you make after entry and changes to your circumstances can impact your fees. Make sure you get an understanding of what to expect over the following 2-5 years, with projections showing expected changes in fees, age pension, cash flow and asset values.

out the best financial strategy. The value of seeking advice from an accredited aged care adviser is peace of mind to ensure you have made the right decisions to generate enough cashflow while protecting the value of your estate.

3. Filling-in forms incorrectly

As an Accredited Aged Care Professional TM, I can provide advice to help you navigate the rules and consider strategies that may best meet your needs.

Services Australia needs to review your financial position to calculate your fees. To enable this assessment, you need to complete some forms and update Centrelink (or Veterans’ Affairs) records. If you don’t fill in the right form, or make mistakes with the information provided, your fees might be incorrectly calculated or cause long delays with the assessment. “He encapsulates what we're trying to do in the Contemporary Music Program at Southern Cross; that is to give our students a range of industry-focused skills that are vital to make a career out of music."

and capacity of maths teaching in our schools, especially for ‘out-of-field’ maths teachers. The Professional Certificate in Teaching Mathematics (Out-of-Field Teachers) will be offered for the first time in March 2024. The course is delivered online in only 12 weeks. Although the Australian maths curriculum for Years 7 to 10 is a focus, teachers from all levels, including primary school teachers, are encouraged to apply. The course is offered under the Federal Government’s Microcredentials Pilot in Higher Education program, to support the development of courses in priority areas, including education. Development of the course was led by Southern Cross University Professor David Lynch, who said it would provide practical, work-based learning activities for teachers. “Almost half of the learning hours occur in teachers’ classrooms.” Professor Lynch said.

Professor Lynch said Australia’s national teacher shortage was exacerbated by a lack of teachers who were confident in teaching maths. “I led a major study in conjunction with the Mathematics Association of NSW where we essentially looked at the challenges of staffing our schools with teachers who are not only competent but confident to teach mathematics. The logical solution to fill this gap was a microcredential,” Professor Lynch said. “Teachers qualified to teach mathematics are in very short supply across Australia, especially in regional and rural areas. Out-of-field mathematics teaching (OoFMT) is now a chronic issue impacting staffing in most secondary and primary schools and therefore Australia’s capacity to enrol and prepare high-quality STEM school graduates.

“The challenge of out-of-field mathematics teaching is further compounded by a lack of flexible, formal mathematics teaching-specific study options, along with the absence of a support network for professional learning and mentoring for mathematics teachers in such circumstances. Our microcredential will address these gaps.” For information about the course, or to enrol, visit: https://www.scu.edu.au/study/education/ mathematics-for-oof-teachers/

“The assessments are integrated into reallife classroom practice, leveraging teachers’ expertise and experience, including those from their in-field teaching areas.” The certificate is being delivered in partnership with the Mathematical Association of NSW (MANSW), Australia’s largest professional association for mathematics teachers. This provides teachers enrolled in the certificate numerous opportunities to connect with experienced maths educators who can serve as mentors, and access valuable educational resources. Education Unlocking a Sustainable Future How Schools Can Address the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals

T

he Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were established by the United Nations in 2015. Covering critical issues like poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, clean water, and climate action, these 17 goals provide a framework for meaningful change. Educational institutions can actively contribute to each goal, and here’s a brief summary. 1. No Poverty (SDG 1): Schools can engage in community, outreach, partnering with local organisations to offer resources, mentorship, and skill-building opportunities to families facing economic hardships. My school provides scholarship positions for refugee and Indigenous families, supporting access to education. 2. Zero Hunger (SDG 2): Schools can teach sustainable agriculture through gardens or collaborations with local farms. Partnerships with organisations like Foodbank or Loaves and Fishes can further combat hunger. 3. Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3): Wellness programs, counselling services, and campaigns on healthy living promote both physical and mental health which is crucial. 4. Quality Education (SDG 4): Inclusive practices, teacher training, and resources for marginalised students contribute to quality education. Establishing sister school partnerships, like my school and Kreu Yueng School (Cambodia), 76 COFFS COAST focus

enhances understanding and capacity. 5. Gender Equality (SDG 5): Schools can ensure equal opportunities, educate on gender biases, and challenge stereotypes to actively promote gender equality. 6. Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6): Schools can reduce water consumption, educate on conservation, and invest in sustainable water infrastructure. 7. Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7): Energy efficient practices, renewable sources, and energy conservation education contribute to affordable and clean energy targets. 8. Decent Work & Economic Growth (SDG 8): Collaborating with local businesses for internships, career counselling, and vocational training prepares students for the workforce. 9. Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9): Encouraging STEM education, sustainable infrastructure projects, and involving students in school renovations promote innovation. 10. Reduced Inequality (SDG 10): Inclusive policies, fostering acceptance, and providing resources combats discrimination. Reconciliation Action Plans, like my school’s, address inequality. 11. Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11): Promoting sustainable urban planning, environmental education, and community engagement. Meeting with city councils, leads to positive outcomes in transportation networks. 12. Responsible Consumption and Production

FROM BISHOP DRUITT COLLEGE

(SDG 12): Schools can reduce waste through recycling programs, educate on responsible consumption, and encourage sustainable practices. 13. Climate Action (SDG 13): Eco-friendly initiatives, climate change awareness, and environmental education. Student-led groups, like my school’s Environment Group, actively engage in reduction and recycling programs. 14. Life Below Water (SDG 14): Initiatives to protect water ecosystems, educate on marine conservation, and advocate for policies. My school collaborates with the local marina to prevent plastics from entering the food web. 15. Life on Land (SDG 15): Afforestation projects, wildlife conservation programs, and biodiversity education contribute to preserving life on land. 16. Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG 16): Conflict resolution programs, civic engagement, and education on human rights and justice. Groups like the Goori Group and Rainbow Group at my school actively contribute. 17. Partnership for the Goals (SDG 17): Schools can collaborate with organisations, participate in community forums, and promote partnerships to collectively work toward achieving all SDGs. Schools play a crucial role in building a sustainable future. Through education, advocacy, and practical initiatives, schools empower students to be responsible global citizens.
