Finding connections and friendships at Oak Tree

One of the many benefits of living in an Oak Tree Retirement Village is being surrounded by like-minded people who genuinely love their community and enjoy living life, rather than retiring from it.

Connecting with like-minded people

Most retirement villages require residents to be over 55 years of age, and so you can have peace of mind knowing that your neighbours are at a similar life stage to you.

Coming from similar age ranges gives you ample opportunity for social connection, forge new friendships and make new memories.

It also creates a real sense of community and belonging, which research has shown plays an important role in boosting physical health and mental and emotional wellbeing.

Being surrounded by like-minded neighbours also means you won’t have to worry about living next door to energetic young families – although families and grandchildren are more than welcome to visit you too.

What’s important to remember is that it’s not the layout, design or location of a retirement village that makes it special – it’s the people. Bricks and mortar may house residents, but the vibrant communities inside the villages, all with their own unique culture, are the beating heart.

Keep your social calendar as full as you’d like The community facilities, social activities and events in villages are designed to enrich your life, give you the opportunity to engage with other residents and fend off any feelings of isolation and loneliness.

At Oak Tree, we understand that every resident’s dream lifestyle is unique and we respect their different interests, beliefs and backgrounds. And so, it is completely up to you as to how involved you want to be. You can participate in as much or as little as you would like to.

Discover what life is like in a retirement village

One of the best ways to get a feel for a retirement village is to book a private tour and speak to residents and staff to get a real understanding of what life inside the village is like.

Retirement villages are a community so it’s important you feel a sense of belonging with your neighbours from the outset. You may also want to consider inviting your family to the village to spend time understanding the offering and facilities with you.

If safe, vibrant and caring communities sound like what you’re looking for, then call Village Manager Michelle to discuss what a future at Oak Tree Coffs Harbour could look like for you. Visit

RACHEL WARD

Actors Rachel Ward and her husband Bryan Brown bought a beautiful farm in the Nambucca Valley 35 years ago and have many cherished memories enjoying it with their family. In recent years Rachel was becoming more unsettled about climate change and the direction the world was heading, and after realising the role that agriculture played she decided to make some significant changes to the way they were farming. She has documented her experience in a film called Rachel’s Farm.

Hi Rachel. You have had your farm here in the Coffs region for many years now, can you tell us about why you fell in love with the property and decided to buy a farm?

The beauty of it really. I was making a film called the Umbrella Woman with my husband Bryan Brown and the area reminded me of where I grew up in England. It's a very beautiful, cosy little narrow valley. It was crazy really, I don't know what we were thinking, being six hours from Sydney! It's a long way but we brought the kids up every holidays, and we've loved it. We've had it for 35 years. You have spent the past few years switching your property to regenerative farming methods, can you explain to those who may not know what regenerative farming is all about?

So regenerative agriculture is basically restoring the natural systems of nature. So natural systems like carbon, water, nutrients, solar, all of those things which we have basically dominated since colonisation.

18 COFFS COAST focus

We've imported European methods of farming, and European genetics and animals which aren’t necessarily suited to this country. So we're rethinking the way of managing these landscapes. It's basically about rehydrating them and making them more resilient again.

What was the big catalyst for making these important changes for you?

Three things really. My neighbour, who has been managing the property for about 10 years. He said, “I don't know if how we’re doing things is financially or ecologically sustainable”. The inputs that we were using were getting more and more expensive, cattle prices were going down, he felt that the land was getting more and more degraded, and that we probably either needed to get out, or make some significant changes.

It was also the black summer fires. That really shook me up and made me feel like

this is not a normal bushfire, it just went on and on and ravished so much landscape. Even the most conservatives were saying this is climate change induced, not just a normal bushfire season. It really was the event that motivated a lot of farmers to change.

And the other thing was that I had a grandchild. That really made me think about my farm in terms of what the landscape might be like in 100 years. I started to think much longer term. It's only going to get worse if we don't address these issues.

You created a documentary film through this process called Rachel’s Farm. Why did you decide it was important to make this documentary and share your journey with the world?

I think one of the things that preceded this existential crisis for me was that I felt I couldn't really do enough to rectify the enormous problems that I saw. My feeling was that it's pretty urgent that we do something to turn systems around. So began my Regen journey.

It wasn't enough just

changing my farm, as a filmmaker I also had the opportunity to have a wider reach. I wasn't really wanting to talk just to farmers, I wanted to talk to consumers, people like me who were ignorant as to how food was getting to our plate. I wanted to fill the gaps for them about the normal food supply chains and how in that system farmers get forced to make their products cheaper and cheaper, and the only way they can do that is by sacrificing our health and our ecology. I think there'll always be a market of very cheap food but I felt that there is also a market for those that could afford to prioritise their food choices. And I think the more that those people encourage that market, the sooner we see benefits from the economies of scale, and the sooner we will all be able to share in more nutrient dense food and make a difference for our environment. We need to think more about where our food is coming from, we need to ask questions and if we don’t agree with how it got here we need to decline it. It’s a consumer based market and we have the power to change it. Continued over

I think one of the things that preceded this existential crisis for me was that I felt I couldn’t really do enough to rectify the enormous problems that I saw.

You’re very honest in the film about your views and understanding of farming and its impact on the world, and how that has changed for you from when you first bought the property to now. What have been the biggest lessons you’ve taken away from your farming experience so far?

So many! I didn’t know anything, I had paid no attention to it. I had taken it completely for granted. It really wasn't until I became aware of how much agriculture was responsible for climate change, ecology destruction and our landscapes being less and less resilient, it wasn’t until I woke up to that, that I started reading about it. I just had no reason to know about it, even though I had a farm, because it was also a very male dominated world. I didn't really know

enough to be making decisions on the farm and I saw the practical work always being done by the men. I didn’t feel like I could participate, and when you don’t participate in something you're less interested in it. When I began to see that I could participate in it, I loved it. Now I do know enough to really participate in the management decisions. I’ve also learnt a lot about the challenges of getting through the food supply system. It's very convenient for industrial operations, but it's much less convenient for those that want to work outside the system. So if you want to serve your local community, or direct market, it's very unfriendly to those of us who are trying to have a smaller, more localised food system.

allows more room for women to get involved, can you explain this theory based on your personal experience?

Regen farming is about returning to nature, so it's much more a nurturing role than it is a dominating role, and I think that women have more of a nurturing side. Also working with animals, I think women just tend to be gentler in the yard; they don’t tend to do as much yelling and clanging as the boys do. I think we’re just more sensitive to animals and nature, not exclusively, but obviously nurture is part of our nature as women. Also, regenerative farming is less about brute strength. It's less about huge machinery and more about letting nature do the work for you. When you get it right, particularly if you've got livestock, it's just about moving the cattle consistently.

The film follows the farm’s progress from the decision to make some changes to about a year down the track. Where are

things at now for you and your farm, have there been any

We are certainly experiencing the events that happen when you stop dominating nature! Nature takes about seven years to rebalance. When you’ve fed chemicals to your plants they become like drug addicts, so when you take the chemicals away they basically go into withdrawals for a while until they can find their natural expression again. We’ve experienced that and had things like plagues of Buffalo Flies and Ticks. I’m just hanging on knowing this will pass and it’s all leading us towards a much healthier, more resilient landscape, which we are definitely seeing signs of already.

What advice would you give others interested in learning more about regen farming practices, making changes on their own property, or finding out ways they can support this movement?

What I learnt going around during the Q&A’s for the film, was that there are a lot of young people that don’t own land but want to farm. They don't want to be sitting behind a desk their whole lives, they want to be out in the open in nature, growing healthy food, they’re concerned about the climate, concerned about their futures, but they feel they won't ever be able to afford land. But there are options out there through agistment or renting land, particularly if they're doing small scale farming like growing vegetables or fruit/nut trees, there are things that people can do that doesn't demand a huge amount of land, and there are also many people who don't know what to do with a lot of bare land, who are retired, people who have bought properties and land in the country because that's their lucky privilege but aren’t

farming it. I think what we're missing at the moment are those people who can connect farmers, young people who want to farm, into land.

Where can people view the film or find more information?

It’s having a round at Coffs cinema at the moment, they need to get onto it quickly though, because feature documentaries don't always last long at the cinema. The more people go and see it the longer it will stay. I’m also doing lot’s of Q&A’s locally, and beyond that it will hopefully be streaming on something called Doc Play, and out on DVD. This issue won't change until consumers start to demand more nutrient rich food and better landscape management.

All over Australia there are farmers and producers making change, you can visit the website rachelsfarmfilm.com.au and there is a map that shows where people are farming regeneratively, organically, permaculture, indigenous foods, everything, so you can choose to support those farmers.

DAN MARSH IS AN INCREDIBLY TALENTED TATTOO ARTIST WHO IS TRULY DEDICATED TO HIS CRAFT. HE HAS RECENTLY OPENED HIS OWN SHOP IN URUNGA CALLED AIYANA

TATTOO, A TRANQUIL SPACE THAT REFLECTS HIS ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND ABILITY TO CREATE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE.

Hi Dan. Can you tell us about your background and journey as a tattoo artist? How did you get started in this field?

I’m originally from Western Australia. I spent most of my working years in various construction jobs, always having a ‘can do’ attitude and eager to try my hand at different trades and acquiring new skills. I loved working with my hands, problem solving, worksite banter and hard yakka, but I really wanted to delve into a more creative field of work, as I felt my life was lacking creativity. As a child, I would spend countless hours in my bedroom drawing from my imagination, creating my own visual world I could escape into. It was not only a way to express myself, but a coping mechanism that really helped me through some of my most difficult years. Growing up, I had people tell me that if I followed my passion for art, I would amount to nothing and be a struggling artist for the rest of my life. However, when people tell

me I can’t achieve something, I tend to use that as fuel to prove I can. When I was 20 years old, a friend of mine told me about a tattoo studio seeking an apprentice. I had never considered it before, but strangely enough, I had spent more of my high school years drawing tattoos on my classmates than I did focusing on my grades. I left my foster family at 18 and had to go after what I wanted in life, as I only had myself to rely on.

Tattoo apprenticeships are completely unpaid and unfortunately after a long time, I gave up tattooing completely so I could earn money to pay my bills. I moved east and went back to construction work, until I decided to revisit tattooing when I was 27. I applied for another tattoo apprenticeship, but the stars somehow aligned that day and I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to tattoo the studio owner's friend for free, to show them what I could

do. I jumped at the opportunity and they were so impressed with my work, they employed me that day. I’ve been fortunate enough to work alongside some really talented artists and I have dedicated my life to learning this unique craft and have never looked back since.

My vision was to create a temple, which would be a peaceful space, not only for me, but for anyone who was drawn to it. The name ‘Aiyana’, means ‘Eternal flower’, which was testament to the patience, perseverance and growth required, to have my vision bloom to life.

What inspires and influences your tattoo designs? Do you have any particular style or specialty?

I have always had an innate desire to expand and evolve in life. I like to be a versatile artist. I’ve learned that our own mind is the only thing ever truly holding us back. I believe it’s wise to stay humble and never stop learning. Seeing the transformation and happiness a client experiences after a tattoo, inspires me. I prefer working in black & grey style, as I spent my entire life drawing mainly with pencils and black pens. I would say I specialise more in realism, micro and tattoos that require patience and precision. Continued over...

How do you like to approach the process of collaborating with clients to design their tattoos?

I like to sit with my clients and take the time to really listen, so I can understand their vision. I believe it is such a huge decision in someone’s life, to mark themselves permanently. On the flip side, it is such a massive responsibility the artist takes on, to be able to execute the tattoo, without any room for error. The person carries your artwork with them for their entire livesliterally to the grave. I don’t think it gets any more permanent than that.

What do you enjoy most about being a tattoo artist?

They say “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life” and I feel that is completely true with the work I do. It is definitely not easy, is a lifestyle and not your typical job. You dedicate a lot of your own free time, spending countless hours designing new pieces. However, the fact that there is so much freedom in spending my work hours being creative, engaging with people one on one, working in a relaxed environment and listening to music,

26 COFFS COAST focus

supersedes any possible negative aspects. You’ve recently opened your studio in Urunga, Aiyana Tattoo. It’s a really unique space, can you tell us a bit about what it was like to set up and what your vision for the space was?

I actually attempted to open my first studio in Sydney, early 2020, but unfortunately the COVID pandemic happened just before I was due to open. The tattoo industry was shut down immediately and as a result, I lost my shop, my apartment upstairs, and my girlfriend at the time had to go back to her country. I lost my entire bond money and about 100 clients who had all paid deposits. It’s fair to say my whole world was turned upside down, literally overnight. I ended up homeless from it and decided to drive north when a dear friend of mine at the time, who was living in Urunga, was kind enough to let me live in a tent on her property. I started from scratch, while battling severe depression after what had happened. I was eventually able to apply for this shop space, which I viewed as my only opportunity to get

myself back on my feet. I was incredibly lucky to have another friend help me financially, to do the fit-out. My vision was to create a temple, which would be a peaceful space, not only for me, but for anyone who was drawn to it. The name ‘Aiyana’, means ‘Eternal flower’, which was testament to the patience, perseverance and growth required, to have my vision bloom to life. You’ve been pretty hands on and creative with the fit out of the shop, can you tell us about some of the projects you took on?

I did the entire fit out by myself. I was incredibly fortunate to have beautiful friends who donated the timber beams I used throughout the studio. I gutted the entire space down to its bare bones and hand-built everything you can see. I wanted the walls to look as though they were carved out of stone. I used old timber posts to make the reception lounge, even sewed the cushions myself and made the Shoji screens out of pine and baking paper.

You’re clearly a very creative person, do you

dabble in any other forms of art?

I don’t really find the time outside of tattooing and running a business to do other forms of art at the moment. However, I do like writing, making music, guitar, singing, songwriting, and painting. I’d like to try Japanese pottery and aim to write a book about my inspiring and incredible journey of finding my biological father a few years ago.

Where can people check out your work or get in touch?

People can see my work on Instagram. My handle is inst_inked. The studio’s handle is ‘aiyana.tattoo’. Email is my preferred form of correspondence, which is aiyana.tattoo@gmail.com’.

I ended up homeless from it and decided to drive north when a dear friend of mine at the time, who was living in Urunga, was kind enough to let me live in a tent on her property.

ARTIST of the MONTH

Hi Leah. Can you tell us about your artistic journey? How did you discover your passion for art and how has it evolved over the years?

Hello and thanks for having me. I was a creative and imaginative kid always looking for fairies in the garden and building cities in the sand pit. I remember when I was young my favourite christmas presents were always art sets, the ultimate gift being a tin of Derwent pencils. Mum even let me paint a mural on my bedroom walls when I was about 13. During high school at John Paul College I did as much art as I could. Once I finished school I kept exploring and creating, earning a diploma and some certificates in different areas of design and learning a lot of great practical skills along the way. It wasn't until my youngest child went to school that I once again had some time to discover who I was as a

creative and so that was when I started painting again.

Where once my paintings were a rainbow of bright colours and geometric shapes, these days my favourite and most used paint colour is Paynes grey and I paint a lot more people and coastal art.

How would you describe your art style?

At the moment I have two styles, sometimes they even merge as one. One is when I paint coastal abstracts, which is very fluid and often Mixed Media.

But my favourite, the one where I can have the most fun is when I paint people. I enjoy painting kids and their imagination or I'll capture a simple moment and tell it my own way.

I have a large portrait that I painted of my family. Instead of the traditional style portrait where the faces are captured this one is only from the legs down. The challenge was to represent each person giving a glimpse of personalities through their stance or their activity, instead of focusing only on facial features.

What mediums do you prefer to work with, and why do you find them particularly appealing?

I enjoy all mediums, they all have different appeals and effects but my ‘go to’ is acrylic paint. It is so forgiving and easy to work with, although I do use a lot of inks too. I love the vibrant colours and also the translucent effect it gives.

When I'm painting I use a lot of water so my acrylic paintings are often mistaken for watercolour.

COFFS COAST focus 29
I like to paint a person but not capture all the fine details so that anyone can hopefully find similarities and relate to the painting imagining themselves or someone they know as that character.

What inspires your work, and how do you incorporate those inspirations into your art?

Kids. Their imaginative play, the dreams, the funny little things they say. It’s funny that when you are little you want to grow up but once you are an adult you can really appreciate kids’ genuine love, their innocent views, the brutal honesty and the magic and wonder of childhood. I bet I’m not the only one who smiles when I see young children play. So it’s those little gems that I try to capture in my paintings.

When I paint a coastal abstract it can be inspired by something as simple as feeling the

warmth of the sun, walking a headland or wanting to go for a swim. I really am inspired by what surrounds me.

Describe your creative process. How do you approach a new project or piece of art?

Once I have an idea the hard part is that I now have to figure out a way to bring it to life on canvas and have it tell a story. I’ve started to first sketch ideas onto my ipad. This helps me save time and materials while getting the scale and composition right before I start on canvas. Luckily I’ve been able to draw on my kids, nieces, nephews and friends for inspiration. I’ve had my youngest daughter pose in quite a few paintings for me over the years.

Can you tell us about some of your recent work and what you’re loving in your art practice at the moment?

Years ago I painted a series of kids with animals which I loved so I am excited to now be just starting another kids series about what kids could be when they grow up. I’m having fun with that and figuring out all the possible scenarios.

Do you have a favourite piece of artwork you’ve created? If so, what makes it special to you?

There have been a few over the years that I wish I hadn’t sold but I do have one that I won’t sell. It’s not my best but It was the first of my paintings of kids in imaginative play. It is also the first painting I exhibited. This for me was a big step.

What do you hope your audience takes away from your art?

I just want my art to connect with my audience. Maybe it’s a memory or it just makes you smile. I like the idea that my art could bring a little joy. Do you have any goals for your artistic career, and what are your plans for the future?

Creating is my passion so to have that pay the bills would have to be the ultimate goal. My plans for the future are to upskill. I’m still figuring it out but I would love to work in the areas of youth and aged care and offer some form of art therapy or classes.

Where can people check out your work or get in touch?

During COVID some of you may have already seen some fun paintings of mine. My kids and I started painting our fence with a different mural every two weeks. Since everyone was on lockdown it seemed like a nice idea to bring a smile to the faces of those driving by or heading into work. Right now though you can find me on Instagram and facebook

THE TWO OF US

Starring Normie Rowe & Denise Drysdale backed by The Playboys

Normie and Denise have been friends since they were teenagers. When they met, Normie was an emerging recording artist appearing on The GO!! Show, and Denise was recognised as Australia’s first go-go dancer on a new music show, Kommotion. Their careers since have seen them enjoy success across the entertainment spectrum. While enjoying a string of hits that includes - “Shakin’ All Over”, “Que Sera Sera”, “It Ain’t Necessarily So”, and “Ooh La La”, Normie was at the peak of his pop stardom when he was called up and spent two years in the Army including service in Vietnam. On

his return, he re-established his career in major Sydney clubs, and on television, and his memorable role as Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables”.

Denise’s dancing career took a back seat when she became Ernie Sigley’s barrel girl on “The Ernie Sigley Show”. Ding Dong had arrived. Her television and theatre credits are too many to mention but her

love of entertaining continues in theatres and clubs across the country.

“THE TWO OF US” is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to enjoy the skills and charm of these two national treasures. There’ll be hits. There’ll be surprises.

It might not be politically correct… but it will be a lot of fun!

Lowanna Doye decided it was time to tackle the issue of single use coffee cups in our region, and started Coffee For Climate, an initiative that in partnership with local coffee providers offers clever alternatives to single use. And it is proving to be a great success so far!

climate Coffee FOR

Who’s involved?

“Watching people adapt during COVID gave me the confidence

to do this,” said Emily, owner of Liberty at Urunga, where you’ll find a thriving culture of reusability. This spring, her team will celebrate 12 months since they last served coffee in a throw away cup. She adds, “seeing people get in the habit of wearing a face mask I knew my customers would be able to remember their keep cup.”

Since its launch Bellingen’s grass-roots initiative has been a collaborative venture. Enthusiastic locals have generously given their time and skills. The much-loved logo was originally created by a Year 5 pupil; the image was reworked to printability by graphic designers Danny and Daisy, the husband-and-wife team at Bellingen Gelato. Across town at Bello High, after co-producing a video for Instagram, students from the Environmental

Council created an advert for Triple B radio station. Matt and Meg from Village Pottery Company, another partnership based at Valla Beach, insisted on supplying subsidised travel cups to ensure affordability to both cafes and customers. Countless other volunteers continue to contribute.

How does the initiative work?

With three alternatives to the takeaway coffee cup, we believe there’s no excuse for single use:

Dine in

Why are we still social distancing? Take a beat; soak up café culture; connect with familiar faces; enjoy the warmth of a real cup and appreciate the latte art on your coffee.

Use Your Own

In a hurry and lost your cup? Purchase a locally made, affordable travel cup from your barista for only $20 (first coffee free).

Borrow a mug

Forgot your keep cup, but already have heaps

at home? Or you’re on a budget and can’t afford the travel cup? Borrow a one-of-a-kind treasure from the town-wide Mug Library. Choose your mug, enjoy the freedom of coffee on the go, and when you’re finished return to any of our cafés for commercial cleaning. Ironically, the biggest star of the campaign is a waste product. Courtesy of LifeHouse Care and Bellingen Council, a dozen coffee houses share a town-wide Mug Library. “We get a lot of mugs donated through deceased estates or people moving or replacing,” said Patrick from Bowerhouse at Raleigh. “Unfortunately, we don’t sell them all. Not sure of the exact tonnage rate but maybe a few boxloads a year we’d have to put in landfill.” He adds “We’d rather give them to a nice organisation like Mug Library and keep that circular economy going.” This is ultimate recycling.

“Mugs are slow to turn over in our op shop,” said Crystal from LifeHouse Care. “Before this initiative we’d often send one box of unsold mugs to landfill per month, because they hadn’t found a new home within the

40 COFFS COAST focus

designated time on the shelf. These mugs aren’t chipped or cracked, they’re in perfect condition.” “Now we’re able to divert this resource from waste into reuse.”

Borrowing a mug is beneficial to cafe owners. In a global food price crisis, this daily action saves money by reducing small business costs on disposable packaging.

“We love the extra layer of connecting with our customers that the Mug Library offers,” said Jess, whilst serving from her coffee van Roaming Barista at Bellingen Growers Market. “Chatting about the initiative and watching them go through the mug selection process, not to mention the satisfaction of knowing there’s significantly less landfill as a result.”

At the base of Dorrigo Mountain, Thora General Store’s owner, Boaz says “we love being part of the shire wide initiative. Tourists can grab a mug from us and drop it off in Bello, or even Urunga. Likewise, we’re a

collection point for westbound travellers to drop off their empty mugs.”

What’s coffee got to do with climate?

Why do we care so much about the single-origin, fair-trade, organic status of our beloved morning brew, if we’re happy to dump all that earth-loving goodness into a piece of trash?

When we’re acutely aware of our overburdened waste management system do we need our caffeine fix to be wrapped in a finite resource? Is it sustainable in a climate crisis to demand coffee served in plant-based litter?

“The UN says the quickest way to turn around climate change, and the species extinction crisis we have on the planet, is to stop

destroying native forests,” said Bob Brown during his visit to Bellingen in May. Despite its ‘earthy’ natural aesthetic, paper cups don’t grow on trees. To manufacture a throw away cup puts unnecessary strain on our earth’s resources, particularly the global timber industry. Once the forest is harvested, the pulped timber undergoes a complex process of production and transportation. One estimate suggests takeaway coffee cups are equal to approximately ¼ pound Co2 emissions, roughly 113g. Regardless of whether your single-use cup claims to be sugarcane, compostable, biodegradable, or even edible, they’re manufactured in industrial facilities, all of which are reliant on fossil fuel. This is not just a waste issue; it’s an emissions issue. Why not embrace this? It’s achievable climate action.

“I think the initiative is just fantastic,” said Hearthfire manager Maxie, who alongside Liberty, 5 Church Street and Bellingen Gelato now only serve coffee in reusables. “People are participating. We get the thumbs up from customers when we tell them they can’t get a single use cup anymore.”

Where to from here?

Why are we still strutting around with pulped timber cups in our hands, like we’re Ally McBeal? This look is so last century! Let’s call it a day and end our love affair with disposable coffee. In solidarity with the world’s poorest people who’ll be negatively impacted by climate induced extreme weather faster and harder than us, surely the least we can do is remember our keep cup? Or better still, text your boss/partner/friend, tell them you’re running 5 minutes late and say those magic words to your barista: ‘To have here.’

If you have a surplus of mugs you can drop them off at the Mug Library depot: Kombu, 1 Church St, Bellingen. Follow on instagram: @coffee_for_climate

PFLAG

It’s wonderful to chat to you Stacey. Can you share with us your personal journey and experiences as someone who identifies under the LGBTQ+ banner?

I had my first inkling that I was a lesbian when I was 22 and sneakily put an ad out and I remember I was too scared to check the inbox! I was a young mum and had two children who had just started school, so I quietly went back into my self-closet and had two more children. I left my ex-husband in 2010 and found myself in religion where I stayed closeted and pushed that part of me down until I couldn’t hear it anymore. I loved the family and community I built there but there came a time I couldn’t hide this special part of me anymore, and I didn’t want to. I left the church and changed jobs and came out later in life at age 38. It was a really interesting time filled with so many emotions and the ability to look back at a lot of my life with a feeling of ooohhhh that makes sense now! Embracing the most authentic me was filled with inhales, exhales, tears and a sense of peace and self acceptance. I found Coffs Harbour to be a lovely accepting community and my employment so embracing. I work with at-risk teens and have had the privilege of being involved in facilitating

NAPPER STACEY

youth queer social support groups and their courage, bravery and embracing of themselves is so inspiring to me. Attending my first pride was so emotional and to be surrounded by other LGBTQIA+ people who just celebrated love and equality and the continued advocacy for equality was humbling and beautiful and colourful. I cried tears of joy a lot that week! I lost a lot of people from my life, but I found a few and a new vibrant community of LGBTQ and allies and it’s growing, I’m still blooming!

You recently got married and how great is it that Australia eventually caught up with marriage equality. Tell us more about your wonderful day and Mrs Napper.

Kirsty my wife identifies as non-binary and their pronouns are they/them. They are so incredible and we met through the world of Facebook where I was trying to make queer friends. They are an incredible human and the Principal of a special assistance school for kids and a big advocate for the community. They had a custom suit made and the lining was screen printed with the card from the first bunch of flowers I sent them when we started dating. I wore a beautiful lace gown to honour their love of lace and had the most epic tinsel jacket made for the reception on the perfect May day. We got

married at the stunning Riverview Island. We wanted people to feel loved and to be surprised with fun elements! It was important that we had LGBTQIA+-friendly vendors. We had a signature cocktail with fairy floss and glitter at the end of our ceremony! Our theme in our relationship and life has been love wins and there’s no better feeling than love winning! What role do you think allies play in supporting the LGBTQ+ community, and how can they be better engaged through organisations like PFLAG+?

Allies play such an amazing and important role in the LGBTQ+ community. By engaging with organisations like the amazing work PFLAG does, you get to be a part of the next generation coming through strong, safe, aware and proud. You get to be part of educating others and being part of the beautiful journey it is. You get the opportunity to make someone feel valuable and empowered to live a life that is no different from yours, one they deserve.

PLACEYarrila

This landmark, futuristic $81m building in the city centre was designed by lead architect Matthew Blair from awardwinning architects BVN and built by Lipman Pty Ltd.

“Yarrila Place will deliver new opportunities for the Coffs region for years to come and we now need to ensure that this investment in the future of our local government area lives up to its potential,” said City of Coffs Harbour Mayor Paul Amos.

“Yarrila Place can, and must be, a hub for lifelong learning, a beacon for arts and a place where creativity, commerce and community initiatives can thrive for years to come.”

The building houses the city’s state-of-the-art Museum, Library and Art Gallery. The cuttingedge library is split into 3 welcoming levels for children, young adults and general use.

The museum and gallery – collectively known as Yarrila Arts and Museum (YAM) – will attract national exhibitions, workshops and

events to Coffs Harbour. Each will be able to offer experiences usually only available in capital cities.

The new cultural facilities embrace people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds in a safe, inclusive public space.

Very importantly, the building also supports the regional economy with a focus on the creative industries and start-ups by providing facilities such as a digital studio, make space, a themed café and meeting and study rooms available to all.

The new building also centralises the provision of the City of Coffs Harbour’s community and essential services, including the customer service points and Council Chamber.

“Encouraging lifelong learning also supports

economic growth through creating more and better job opportunities for our youth,” said Natalia Cowley, City of Coffs Harbour General Manager.

“When cultural and civic facilities are placed together in a city's central location, they not only activate each other, they breathe life into the whole area by encouraging and supporting business investment in the surrounding areas.

“YAM exhibitions and events will also bring even more tourists to a city whose global status as an ECO estination is already renowned.

“Yarrila Place makes a breathtaking statement on Coffs Harbour's growing role as a leading regional city and tourist destination.”

Walking Together – From

As a group of non-Indigenous female artists living on unceded Gumbaynggirr and Dunghutti Country we accept the gracious invitation given to us by First peoples - to walk together for a better future.

Responding through the power of creativity is our small way of adding our voice toward positive change, acknowledging that this is complex and contested terrain. The works in the exhibition draw from our personal experiences of growing up or emigrating to an Australia that did not see or celebrate itself as home to the oldest living culture on earth,

stretching back over 65,000 years. It did not understand or accept sovereignty as a spiritual notion, “the ancestral tie between the land, or ‘Mother Nature’ and First peoples.” Instead, it sought to silence First peoples, to disempower and subjugate. It is a hard truth. We reflect on this through our works and see the Uluru Statement from the Heart as an invitation to walk together towards a better future, to celebrate and embrace First peoples’ culture as a precious gift to all of us.

Bee The Woopi SHED

In 2015, Judith and Serge moved to the Coffs Coast where Serge reignited his childhood passion for bees and beekeeping. What initially started as a few hives in Emerald Beach has now grown into a thriving small business. “At first we were running the business out of our home garage, specialising in supplying polyhives from Finland” said Judith. “We quickly outgrew that and moved to a bigger industrial warehouse in Woopi, opening there in December 2020.” With the aim of providing local Beekeepers with a wide range of quality beekeeping equipment and options the business has continued to grow and is doubling its footprint this month by moving into a second warehouse in Woopi. While there are many on-line beekeeping outlets, nothing beats being able to walk into the

showroom and see the range firsthand. “One of the things we pride ourselves on is giving an honest appraisal of the pros and cons of each product, and in carrying a diverse range of Australian-made hives and equipment, as well as imported gear. What might suit one person, may not suit another, and it is important to us that beekeepers are given options, and leave with a customised solution to their needs.” A visit to the showroom is not just for the beekeeper. Set in remnant bushland, the showroom features a wide choice of beekping books, giftware, local honey, beeswax and candlemaking supplies. Supporting responsible beekeeping is at the heart of what Coffs Beekeeping Supplies does. “We can help the newbee to get started on the right foot, or can supply bulk quantities of gear for the commercial keeper. And with

the additional warehouse space our range of products will continue to grow.”

Coffs Beekeeping Supplies also runs a variety of courses during the year ranging from free Introduction to Beekeeping sessions to candle making and products of the hive.

Next time you’re in Woopi pop in and have a chat. Nothing beats being able to talk to another beekeeper and get some practical firsthand advice.

Coffs Beekeeping also stocks gear and hives for the native bee enthusiast.

KEVIN HOGAN

Kevin recently marked his 10th anniversary in Federal Parliament as the Member for Page, a huge electorate stretching from just north of the Big Banana to the Queensland border. He’s also the Shadow Minister for Trade and Tourism, a job that is important for rural and regional Australia. There is nothing he loves more than spending time in the local community.

Hi Kevin. Can you tell us a bit about your earlier career?

I grew up in regional Australia. I ended up in Sydney when I finished university and went on to have a career in the financial markets. I lived and worked there for just over 10 years and was where I met my wife, Karen. Once we started to have

children we moved back home to the North Coast. We bought a small farm close to our family.

How did you end up getting involved in politics? What motivated you to pursue a career in public service?

I came into politics at the local grassroots level. As the kids were growing up, I was coaching my son's cricket team and I was on the P&C of their local school. I also became

small community. I started to meet politicians and met my local State MP who noticed my passion for helping the community and he encouraged me to join the Nationals. That’s what ultimately led to me becoming a Federal MP. I have great gratitude for the job and really respect the trust that my community has put in me. I certainly don't take that for granted.

It is a very rewarding role in that you have the opportunity to really make a change in people's lives, for the better.

How do you balance the demands of your political career with your personal and family life?

It was a balancing act when the kids were younger. Now our three children are older, it’s a little easier. Karen comes to the events

50 COFFS COAST focus

I go to on weekends so we can spend time together. I’ve missed birthdays and events, but I’m not complaining, I’m honoured to do this job and I’m as passionate about it now as I was at the very beginning.

In what ways do you like to engage with your constituents on the North Coast?

How do you ensure that their voices and concerns are heard and addressed in your role as an MP?

I try to go to everything I can. That’s how you meet everyone. Families get a chance to chat about what’s important to them. Also, with email and the various social media platforms, I am very accessible.

What are your future goals and aspirations?

I really aspire to keep delivering for the people in our community. Regional Australia is responsible for the four biggest exports in this country and funds this country, so we need the infrastructure and services to support us in doing that.

What have been some of the highlights of your career?

The highlight for me has always been helping deliver services for the community that people tell me are needed.

The upgraded Pacific Highway, with the Coffs Harbour bypass that’s still to come.

Things like the new $23m Woolgoolga Sports Complex, or the new Surf Life Saving Club. I'm looking forward to the Whale Trail

getting delivered, not to mention dozens of smaller grants helping local sporting clubs and community groups well. They make a big difference.

What do you enjoy most about Woolgoolga and the Northern Beaches?

That's a difficult question as there is so much. We often joke in my office that we’d love to move the main electorate office to Woolgoolga because everyone would love to live in the Northern Beaches. But it’s more than just the beauty. There is a terrific sense of community spirit. The physical beauty of the beaches and the Orara Valley is matched by the spirit of the community. There's a lot to enjoy about it.

Thanks Kevin

RAY BRENDAN

Brendan Ray has been a professional photographer for over thirty years. His creativity and ability to think outside the box in his approach to his work has brought him years of success. He is now also passing on his knowledge by teaching the next wave of photographers in our region.

54 COFFS COAST focus

Hey Brendan, you have been a photographer for the good part of 30 years, tell us a bit about where it all began for you and the journey so far?

I started my career with the Commonwealth Government in Canberra and completed several diplomas including photography, screen, and 3D animation whilst there.

In 2005, my wife and I moved to the Coffs Coast and I began working as a photographer for APN Newspapers at the Coffs Coast Advocate and The Daily Examiner, along with several magazines.

Whilst working at the newspaper, I was asked to do some private commercial photography.

As demand grew, I saw a gap in the market for aerial photography. Initially I chartered helicopters, which proved to be expensive (and

dangerous), but then I purchased a mobile elevated camera system from the United Kingdom which allowed me to take unique photos from 20m above land and that’s when Skyview Photography was born!

Fast-forward nearly 20 years on the Coffs Coast, and I have built a reputable business with an established customer base. Whilst most aerial photography nowadays is done with drones, I contract professional drone pilots when required.

How would you best describe your work?

I have worked in all types of photography, but my specialty is commercial, industrial, advertising, automotive, and fashion. My style is strong contrasts and vivid colours, though I tend to stick to a limited range of shades, mostly deep and focusing on reds and blues.

I really enjoy going out and planning my shoots, scouting for locations and collaborating with clients and local models. We really are spoilt on the Coffs Coast with a variety of breathtaking backdrops at our doorstep. I genuinely love the whole journey from planning a photography shoot to producing the final product.

Clients usually reach out because they’ve looked at my website, have been referred by a client, or have liked my past work.

It’s a bit like music – you’re likely to only listen to a new Metallica song if you liked their previous songs. Clients seek out my photography, as they want me to bring my unique style to their products.

Continued over...

I have had the opportunity to capture some seriously amazing and rare cars, with many of them featuring Coffs Coast landscapes.
SKYVIEW PHOTOGRAPHY

With such an accomplished photography career behind you, what do you feel have been some of your best shoots?

A while back, I was commissioned to shoot a restored ‘Samba’ Kombi for the owner. I chose to take the photo of the iconic van overlooking Arrawarra beach. The final product won an international award for advertising photography and ultimately caught Volkswagen’s eye.

After some pretty intense back-and-forth legal discussions, they offered me a contract to shoot images with a Volkswagen license. And so, began a new adventure in classic car photography. I have had the opportunity to capture some seriously amazing and rare cars, with many of them featuring Coffs Coast landscapes.

The first Volkswagen poster I produced turned into a runaway success and became one of the best-selling international posters, available via US/UK websites, eBay, and even at the local Kmart in Coffs Harbour. I went on to licence about 10 of my photos for sale as posters, and they’re still doing really well. What has kept you so interested in photography over the years?

I love being commissioned to undertake work for clients, but what really keeps me excited is my own photography projects. There’s just something about taking my own concepts and turning them into images, that gets me

56 COFFS COAST focus

fired up.

Between you and me I do all my thinking in the shower, and most mornings my poor wife has to deal with me declaring, “I’ve just thought of the most amazing idea for a shoot!”

Thankfully I have a very supportive family, who encourage (most of) my creative endeavours.

Let’s talk gear. What can you not work without? What advice would you give to beginner photographers about where to start?

I own some pricey equipment including Leica and Phase One cameras. This equipment is required for some of the work I do, due to the image quality and high resolution for large prints.

However, if you’re just starting out, I’d say don’t get too hung up on brand names and equipment. Most cameras do the same job, and splurging on fancy expensive brand named gear doesn’t automatically make your photos better or you a better photographer. What really makes a difference is practice. I’ve made plenty of mistakes (and still do), but this is the only way you learn. You really just need to get out there with your own camera, take photos (lots of them), and craft your own style. You also teach photography here in Coffs. What does it mean to you to pass on your experience to others?

goal is to pass on my love for photography, so they can make images that speak to them, and hopefully, others will enjoy them too.

so they can make images that speak to them, and hopefully, others will enjoy them too.

I also teach a class with local high school students. We make music videos and short films. It’s awesome to show them there’s a world of creative options beyond the usual academia.

How has photography changed from when you started to what it’s like for your students starting out now?

When I started in the photography industry we still used film, as opposed to digital media. But I actually think the biggest shift in photography is happening as we speak, thanks to the rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

for making short films. I have even managed to snag a few awards for past efforts.

I am currently teaching Photography, Videography, and Screen Media at the Bay School of Creative Arts at the Big Windmill, along with a few other places.

I’m honestly having a blast. It’s my chance to share all the skills and tricks I’ve picked up over the years. My students are different ages, with varying backgrounds, and skill levels. The best part is making the classes engaging and enjoyable.

My goal is to pass on my love for photography,

AI programs and hardware are becoming a common part of photography, and are perhaps a natural evolution? However, I don’t think it will ruin natural art or the expression of photography.

What is great, is the evolution of technology now allows us to save precious images for the future.

Do you have any goals or desires for the next few years and where it might take you?

Right now my personal goal is to create some more films and music videos. As always though, this will take a backseat as I continue to grow my business and pursue a teaching career.

If you’re interested in photography classes or need a photographer for commercial work please check out my website skyviewphotography.com.au. Always happy to chat.

My

Store Mullaway

WALLY NYLOLYN & JANN BOER

Hi Wally and Jann. When did you first open the Mullaway Store and how did it get started?

Mullaway store has been established since the 1860's. First at Mullaway headland cabins and then at the present site since the late 1960's we believe, it has changed a lot! There have been 5 sets of families previous to us in the store at this location and Jann worked for the previous owners. The opportunity to lease came up and then we bought the shop, so over 25 years we have enjoyed changing and growing this

business. We have knocked down walls, moved counters, modernised as needed, added a coffee window and even taken away rooms from the residence to enlarge the takeaway space. Then we moved a little bit of Mullaway history, a little house from Headland Road to give us more living space!

The facade of the store is old red mahogany which came from an old boat shed down the road. As mentioned we are ‘old school’ and love to recycle.

What do you love most about the community in Mullaway and running a business in this area?

We are so blessed to be in Mullaway, the

Wally Nylolyn and Jann Boer took over the Mullaway Store over 25 years ago and have created a true community hub and meeting place for locals. The shop has evolved over that time and they’ve seen many local kids grow up, travellers coming and going, and the community in Mullaway evolve too.

community is awesome. Years ago the families had kids growing up (some big families), then it started to become an ageing community, but these days there are many young families in the community and happily some of the ones we watched growing up now have settled back in the area with their young families. There are community groups, school based activities, the notice board is full of info, people gather, meet and greet, kids ride their bikes, surf, fish, snorkel, play sport, utilise the new park facilities and are outdoor orientated. It's awesome when the kids come in for a chat, draw us pictures and they are happy, healthy kids! We put our longevity in the store down to the Mullaway community!

What is the concept for the store in terms of what you provide and the atmosphere there?

Mullaway Store provides good ‘old school’ products, basic needs are met with milk, bread, drinks etc! We provide take away, trying to keep the prices affordable. Five years ago we started coffee and Artisti Coffee Roasters provides us with Black White Espresso blend and this has been successful. The vibe of the store varies from cool laid back surfer vibes and people chatting to absolute chaos with the takeaway being inundated with many orders, sometimes

58 COFFS COAST focus

the shop feels like the ocean, it comes in waves.

It's the people that come here that make our store great for a chat and we have many travellers, and are diversified in all ways! A funny thing is we don’t sell lollies to kids before school and they accept this rule.

Can you tell us a bit about your team and how it’s evolved over the years?

We are so lucky to have now and previously such great young people in the team. We have always employed local kids, who stay until they finish school. We have watched many young ones grow, mature and become successful in their future years. They learn many skills that hopefully help towards their future, we are always sad to see them go, but extremely proud of their goals! At present our Baristas are Tooru and Chisa, from Japan. They are so great to have here, friendly, personable, eager to learn and so very helpful. They learn quickly and put sunshine in our days. Tooru won best new barista at Artisti last year of which we were extremely proud

as he loves the craft that is coffee. Chisa has plans to open her own cafe in her hometown when she returns after a couple of years with us. Previously we had a Taiwanese lady, Janet who was our first barista, she is now doing physio at uni and has become an Australian citizen. We were sad to see her go but great to watch her Aussie adventure progress! We have been so lucky to have these wonderful people as part of the Mullaway Crew. We have also learnt a lot from all who have been with us, which is very rewarding. Tell us a bit about the menu and what some of the favourites are amongst customers?

Our menu is ‘old school’ takeaway, with burgers, deep fried foods, sandwiches, pies, etc! The favourites are chicken satay burgers, falafel wraps, salad sandwiches and works burgers. Then comes the chips! There was a chip shortage recently which made it very tricky! We also do a bit of catering that is made up of salad wraps, fruit platters, morning teas and cheese platters with lots of variety! Coffee is

popular, too! We get to know our regulars' preferred food and then we get referrals from others who have heard about our food. Have you both always worked in the food industry? What drew you to this kind of work?

Our past wasn't really in this field. Wally was a driver, boilermaker and then retired and as he says I bought a shop and pulled him out of retirement! I have done hospitality work, however neither of us are good business people so we laugh when asked about our business structure! We were drawn to Mullaway store because of the feel of the community, that's what has kept us here so long and the people we meet.

When you’re not at work, what do you guys love to do in your spare time? Well we really don't get much spare time. We have a sideline Kombi wedding chauffeur service that gets us out and about and we love driving around in our split screen kombis. Have you got any hopes or plans for the store moving into the future?

Plans for the near future of the store is to have someone manage the store or lease it out and let them add energy and new ideas to the ever changing tastes of hospitality. We can then go back to surfing, fishing, family time, travelling, kombi driving, art and the things we don't have time for now!

SUSTAINABLY Growing EATING

We had a chat to Darren Smith and Alice Williams of New Life Farm and they gave us some tips on how you can grow from home and set up your own gardens..

Growing your own food is incredibly rewarding. Food you grow yourself not only tastes better, it’s better for you and for the planet too. Setting up a successful home garden will require some patience, routine and observation.

Start small, grow what is easy first, learn from this experience and expand as your confidence and knowledge builds – that’s how we’ve built the farm!

Firstly, consider the space you have available to grow in. Does it get a minimum 5 hours sunlight a day?

Some plants can grow in partially shaded areas, but they will grow much slower.

Whether you are growing in raised beds, or flat on the ground, first spread some aged animal manure on the area. Work over the area with a pitchfork as deep as possible but with minimal disturbance to the ground’s surface. The objective is to aerate. Disturbing too much soil will encourage weeds and destroy the

microbial life in the soil. Next, sheet mulch with cardboard or newspaper. This will help to suppress weeds, retain moisture and encourage biological activity within the soil (which helps grow better crops!).

Liberally apply good quality compost approximately 2.5cm thick and apply the same amount of mulch on top of the compost. Give it good water and leave for 2 weeks before it is ready to plant. Ensure when planting that seedlings are planted through the sheet mulch into the original soil that you aerated and applied manure to.

Give planting holes a good water before and after you plant into them. Then water twice weekly –depending on weather, temperature, if the soil looks dry or plants look stressed (plants bolting to seed for example is generally a sign of underwatering). Observation is key.

Grow food that’s in season for the local area. Growing with the season produces better quality produce with less pest, disease and general issues.

MORLYSOUTHALL

Hi Chaitanya. Can you tell us about how the idea for the Village Aunties came about?

Have you heard the expression “it takes a village to raise a child?” Last year a number of practitioners and people who support women and new families through pregnancy, birth and beyond came together with an intention to recreate that village - in Woolgoolga and the Coffs Coast. I realised there must be a lot of pregnant people new to the area without established networks of support, so I started

the Village Aunties as a way to support people in that vulnerable postpartum time when they need it the most.

How does it work?

It’s simple and old fashioned! We put a call out for meals for families in need in our Facebook group and you can choose a day and drop off a nourishing meal. We also receive donations and have semi regular community cookups. If anyone knows of a family who needs support and would be willing to receive it - they can let us know. Would you like to occasionally cook a meal for a new family in need? Head to the Facebook group ”The Village Aunties

Chaitanya MorlySouthall started The Village Aunties as a way to support families in the postpartum period with nourishing meals cooked by volunteers in the local community. She, along with other local practitioners supporting women through this stage of life, believes it does take a village to raise a child and we can reconnect with this way of life.

Woolgoolga” and join us there.

What has the response been like so far from the Woopi community?

There’s a beautiful wave of support from people from Woopi and up and down the Coffs Coast, and the families who have received support have been deeply touched every time. It can be so easy to cook a meal but to these new parents who receive the meals - it is big! The difference between feeling overwhelmed and alone and feeling nourished and held by the community is epic.

Why do you feel this idea of “the village” is so important to reconnect to?

It’s only in recent generations that we haven’t lived in a village environment - new parents aren’t meant to do it alone, we’re meant to exist in a network of care, kindness and friendship, where we feel valued and can share our unique skills and gifts. Bringing back the village means opening our hearts to each other again and offering support where we can. It

62 COFFS COAST focus
THE VILLAGE AUNTIES

makes us resilient as a community and enriches ours and our children’s lives.

You’re involved in some other initiatives around this idea, can you tell us about them?

Recently I began running a seasonal Free Gifting Market at the Woopi Gardens, where everyone brings something to give away and everything is free. Mums and families are welcome to put down a picnic rug and give away things their kids have grown out of, there’s an open mic and people bring food to share, it’s so fun. The next one will be Oct 22nd 10-1pm so pop that in your diary. I love the community in Woolgoolga and I feel blessed to bring this to our little town and I want to acknowledge all the amazing people that make these events and projects come alive!

How do you think your work has influenced your desire to start and be part of these projects?

In my Womb Temple work, I support women to heal before and after birth and other intense and traumatic experiences. Over the years I’ve noticed how depleted women are, especially after birth and how that affects their mental, emotional and physical health. I’m always recommending my clients to enrich their diets and get some deep nourishment. There’s a

saying in traditional Indian medicine “the first 40 days determine the mother’s health for the next 40 years”. After working with some Sikh women, old and young in Woopi, I learned about how supported they are after birth with special simple foods and deep rest and that set me on a path to educate myself, my community and support more mothers locally.

What do you hope families get from having these supports available to them locally?

I hope they feel nourished and held by this community and I hope that we can spread awareness of the importance of postpartum care and planning in our region. There is a lot of support for new parents available, and they can head to @thevillage_coffscoast on IG to link in. On that note, you can also download our free postpartum cookbook that we put together and try out some delicious meals - or cook some to give away!

Have you got any ideas or plans in the works for other ways to support new

parents and families and grow “the village’?

If you check out the Village on Instagram you’ll see our area is rich with amazing birth education classes, women’s circles, pregnancy and postnatal yoga classes, mums groups and more. There’s workshops and doulas and so many supportive services, it’s heartwarming. Between my Pelvic Healing work, the Village Aunties, the Village Market and spending copious amounts of time on the headlands, I’m trying not to have any more good ideas! Haha. Yeah there’s more ideas. Stay tuned.

You can contact Chaitanya through the Village Aunties Facebook page www.facebook.com/ groups/thevillageauntieswoolgoolga or through her website www.wombtemple.com

Ever had an embarrassing ‘leak’ after having a good laugh or coughing fit? Or needed to rush off to the toilet whenever you get the ‘urge to go?’ Pelvic floor muscle weakness is one of the most common issues women experience, where strength of these muscles supporting the pelvic organs have deteriorated. It can also lead to a generalised feeling of heaviness or weakness down below.

Like any muscle that is weak, specific and tailored, pelvic floor training can and will strengthen these muscles, thereby reducing symptoms. However, you may wonder how you know when the pelvic floor is contracting? Education and instruction will help, but another non-invasive way is the use of real time ultrasound (RTUS). By placing the ultrasound head on the lower abdomen, RTUS allows you to visually see the pelvic floor contract and relax, so you know you are doing it correctly! At the same time, we use the RTUS to check your deep trunk core muscle! But why??

Women’s Health

Most of us understand the benefits of a strong core to reduce back pain, improve posture, balance, or our sports performance. But did you know these deep core muscles are also intricately linked to the pelvic floor? Both these groups work together to create stability for the pelvic floor and lumbar spine, and using RTUS we can demonstrate how well they are working together!

Women’s Health Physiotherapy is a branch of physiotherapy that addresses the unique needs and concerns of women throughout their lives. It encompasses a wide range of conditions including pelvic floor weakness, pregnancy and postpartum care, incontinence, menopause related issues and pelvic pain. If you or someone you know are experiencing any of these issues, contact our clinic to speak or book an appointment with Danielle, our women’s health physiotherapist for further guidance and advice.

Hand Injuries - Expertise Does Matter

“If I had sought help earlier, could my outcome have been better?’ Sadly, all too often the short answer is “definitely,” when it relates to what some consider a ‘minor’ hand injury. ANY trauma to the hand, especially if it results in swelling, pain or loss of function, needs early investigation. A delay of only two weeks can result in poor fracture healing, surgical versus conservative treatment, or permanent stiffness.

In the field of hand rehabilitation, precision does matter. Imagine a little or ring finger you cannot bend [try using a hammer!], or putting your hand into your jeans pocket with a bent index finger! Seeking the expertise of an experienced, Accredited Hand Therapist awarded by the Australian Hand Therapy Association [AHTA] can make all the difference in achieving a full and speedy recovery, versus a protracted, poor functional outcome.

From hand and wrist injuries, fractures or arthritic thumbs, tendonosis to carpal tunnel, overuse injuries about the elbow such as tennis and golfer’s elbow

and on to the shoulder. Rotator cuff problems, shoulder bursitis to sporting injuries, our AHTAAccredited Hand Therapists possess an in-depth understanding of the complex structures within the hand and upper limb. At our clinic, we take pride in offering the services of two such Accredited Hand Therapists, Sean and Faye, both with the expertise and experience as required and recognized by the AHTA to provide a high level of focused care that directly addresses the intricacies of hand and upper limb injuries. This wealth of knowledge translates into more accurate diagnoses and precisely tailored treatment plans, ensuring that you receive the optimal care needed for a successful recovery. Whether your injury is minor or complex, our expert Hand Therapists are equipped to guide you on a path towards regaining optimal function and getting back to living life to the fullest.

hat is ‘swallowing difficulty’? Swallowing difficulty is any problem with sucking, swallowing, drinking, chewing, eating, controlling saliva, taking medication, or protecting the lungs from food and drink ‘going down the wrong way’.

What are signs of swallowing difficulty? Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) can have various underlying causes. Some red flags may include:

• Coughing/choking/throat clearing: during or after eating/ drinking

• Change in voice: voice sounds ‘wet’ or ‘gurgled’ during or after meals

• Repeated pneumonia and/or chest infections

• Weight loss / malnutrition

• Food pocketing: keeps food in cheeks

• Drooling: excessive drooling

• Prolonged Mealtimes:  unusually long time to finish meals

• Food refusal: Avoiding specific foods or textures

W• Sensation of food ‘stuck:’ feeling like food is stuck in throat/chest

• Poor positioning: difficulty sitting upright in chair/wheelchair

• Challenges using cutlery: such as spoons, cups, knives, forks

• Unexplained bad breath: persistent bad breath despite oral hygiene

• Vomiting and/or reflux during or after meals

• Face changes: red face/watery eyes during or after meals  Mealtime Management Plans  Our team will work with you to personalise plans, using swallowing strategies, modify food/ liquids, introduce special devices, visual supports, pictures/communication strategies, education and training. Working alongside OTs for positioning and Dietitians for nutrition to provide comprehensive plans.  With over 10 years’ experience working in complex disability, CCSP is experienced and committed in addressing various complex mealtime challenges.

Everyone’s bodies are different, they move in different ways and people need their equipment to support them to do the things they want to do. Coffs Coast Occupational Therapy brings expertise and passion into the assessment and prescription of customised seating and wheelchair solutions for those with complex disabilities. This can range from manual wheelchairs to powered wheelchairs, shower commodes or alternative positioning and pressure care seating systems. When wheelchairs and seating are assessed and prescribed well, there is a perfect balance between the person, their equipment, and the things that people want to be able to do safely and comfortably in their equipment.

Being able to ‘seat’ someone is a specialised area of OT practice. Seating expertise is generally required when people have postural/skeletal abnormalities (e.g. scoliosis, kyphosis, chronic dislocations, spasticity or contractures). Or when instability and pain restrict their ability to get on with living life.

To achieve the best outcomes for clients, a component of the assessment should always be conducted collaboratively in a session with both an OT and Physio. Helena (Coffs Neuro Physio) is incorporated as part of our multi-disciplinary team approach in providing excellence in clinical assessment. When recommending a custom moulded seating solution Coffs Coast Speech Pathology can also be involved during the assessment for people who have difficulty with eating and drinking (Dysphagia). There are a number of ‘red flags’ where a seating assessment could be indicated. These would include:

• Experiencing pain/discomfort

• Looks unstable

• Has a pressure issue or injury

• Are at risks of falls (or fall)

• Have difficulty with operating/ controlling their equipment or

• There are safety concerns. Appointments are at West High St Clinic or in your home.

So What is Exercise Physiology?

What is Exercise Physiology?

Well, it is best thought of as exercise therapy, using exercise as medicine to help treat and manage chronic health conditions. Coffs Coast Exercise Physiology provides experienced exercise-based rehab and fitness services to help a broad range of clients and conditions. From musculoskeletal injuries, strength and conditioning for all ages, those recovering from heart attack or workplace injury, to neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy or M.S., cancer survivors to psychological conditions such a PTSD. We specialise in assessing their needs and tailoring an individualised exercise program as we work in collaboration with Coffs Coast OT, Coffs Physio & Backcare, and Coffs Neuro Physio clients for best outcomes.

Take a recently retired 65yo grandmother of two, challenged in her desire to remain active when given a diagnosis of osteoporosis. Obviously she needed to start exercising to build

Neuro VESTIBULAR PHYSIOTHERAPY

and maintain bone strength, however found weight training intimidating and had never been to a gym. Working with this client developed their confidence, and a suitable program was designed for at home or when traveling.

As part of recovery from cancer, exercise can help to reduce some of the side-effects of chemotherapy, as well as assist in regaining lost strength. The goal here is to get the balance right rebuilding strength and regaining mobility without any adverse effects.

Located in Vernon St CBD, our fully equipped boutique exercise studio provides quality equipment for clients to work with our EP’s in a friendly environment. Hugh Campbell is a local with a special interest / experience in treating cancer patients, and a passion for working with golfers. Erin holds osteoporosis and strengthening classes for over 50’s, trains those with musculoskeletal injuries, neurological condition pilates and hydrotherapy.

Since 2017 Coffs Neuro Physio has been offering people on the MNC experienced, dedicated Neuro physiotherapy. Due to increasing demand we are relocating our team of six dedicated Neuro and Vestibular physios to larger premises in Coffs Harbour Jetty.

Be it following a stroke, brain or spinal cord injury; or diagnosis of a neurological condition such as Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, or Motor Neuron Disease, our new clinic has ample space and specialized equipment for clients to focus on improving everyday physical skills such as standing up, walking, balancing, or improve use of their arms. Or just raise a puff through exercise to improve your brain health and cardiovascular fitness. Our Vestibular Physiotherapists have received additional targeted training in assessing and treating vestibular conditions such as BPPV, vestibular neuritis, Meniere’s disease and vestibular migraine. Working alongside other experienced Allied Health Professionals in ‘Health On High’ is an invaluable resource to our

clients’ outcomes. Impairments caused by neurological conditions often cause poor movement patterns e.g. hitching their hip when walking to compensate for weak leg muscle. Over time, particularly when not addressed early enough, this can lead to musculoskeletal pain and injury such as hip pain. Working collaboratively with the musculoskeletal physiotherapists at Coffs Physiotherapy and Backcare who manage such injuries, allows us to focus on our clients’ rehabilitation and improve their walking pattern, more promptly and with less barriers. Other clients with poor seating postures who need complex wheelchair prescriptions are coconsulted with Emma [Coffs Coast Occupational Therapy].

Interactions like these occur on a regular basis with all individual services at ‘Health On High’, and although we are moving locations our association will remain ongoing.

Wellness Revitalising

At Revive IV Wellness we’re all about embracing the individual’s journey towards wellbeing.

IV Vitamin Therapy, or “vitamin drips” as some call it, is a remarkable approach in allowing your body to enjoy the goodness of essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and electrolytes. IV Therapy is certainly not a new idea but has recently gained popularity and accessibility outside the hospital setting. Administered by our skilled healthcare professionals, this therapy involves delivering a personalised blend of nutrients directly into your bloodstream through a gentle IV line. This alternative method of supplement delivery involves infusing essential vitamins and minerals directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system. While oral supplements have been a staple for decades, IV Vitamin Therapy offers an alternative with potential unique benefits.

One of the primary advantages of IV Vitamin Therapy is the increased absorption rate. When we ingest oral supplements, they must navigate the digestive process, which may diminish their potency. Digestive enzymes and varying PH levels in the stomach can alter the chemical structure of vitamins and minerals,

Health Alternative

affecting their absorption. In contrast, IV Therapy delivers these nutrients being directly delivered into the bloodstream ensuring maximum bioavailability. This rapid absorption can be particularly beneficial for individuals with compromised gut health or those who struggle with nutrient absorption. Moreover, IV Vitamin Therapy allows for precise dosing and customisation based on individual needs. This can be determined through a thorough consultation with our experienced staff as well as through relevant blood testing.

Another compelling reason for the growing popularity for IV Vitamin Therapy is its potential to deliver swift relief. In situations requiring rapid nutrient replenishment, such as recovery from intense physical exertion, dehydration, or illness, IV Therapy can provide a faster response compared to oral supplementation. While a balanced diet should undoubtedly be the foundation of our nutritional intake,

modern lifestyles, stress, medical conditions, and environmental factors can hinder optimal nutrient absorption. IV Vitamin Therapy can act as a complementary strategy to bridge this gap and help individuals achieve their wellness goals more efficiently.

IV Vitamin Therapy presents a promising alternative to traditional oral supplement, particularly for those with specific health needs or compromised nutrient absorption. It’s swift and effective delivery of essential vitamins and minerals into the bloodstream can offer advantages in cases where quick relief or precise dosing is required. However, it is crucial to approach this therapy as a complimentary strategy rather than a replacement for a balanced diet. Consulting with one of our qualified healthcare professionals before embarking on our treatment is essential in assisting the best health outcome on your journey toward wellness.

SELF-TALK

POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES

Self-talk is often called our inner voice, our internal dialogue. Our inner voice combines our conscious thoughts, beliefs, biases, questions, ideas, and assumptions to create an internal monologue throughout each day.

Learning about self-talk is important because it impacts how you feel and what you do. Positive self-talk can be supportive and beneficial, it can motivate you to try new or difficult things, it can be hopeful and optimistic. On the other hand though, it can be negative that undermines, challenges your decisions, is pessimistic and, can also undermine your self-esteem and confidence.

Negative self-talk is the opposite of positive self-talk. Your inner voice is the critic, it sounds negative, full of put-downs, and can’t do’s, it is pessimistic and focuses on the negative. It erodes your self-esteem and self-confidence. It is that voice that tells you, you will fail before you even start. It often is on a repeat cycle and is not based on truth or reality. It can be debilitating and lead to rumination which involves repetitive thinking or focusing on negative thoughts, and feelings. The repetitiveness can affect your mental health and contribute to the development of feeling overwhelmed, anxious and depressed. Negative self-talk can also lead to stress and a tendency to perfectionism.

When you are experiencing negative self-talk, you predominately think bad, negative things about yourself. This continuous negativity might make you feel despondent, feel low, and unable to think you can change your situation or thoughts. Your negative self-talk can affect your relationships with others, this also might make you feel that you are not successful at anything. The constant negative self-talk will be exhausting

and overwhelming and feel hard to get away from. The benefits of positive self-talk can be an effective stress management tool. Research has found that having a more positive life outlook can also provide you with some health benefits, such as quality of life.

When you mainly self-talk positively to yourself and about yourself you will feel more optimistic, calm and be more in control of situations, and be ready to take on any challenges that might present themselves to you. You will feel great about yourself and often when you feel great from the inside your confidence and selfawareness certainly shows on the outside. Your wellbeing improves which is a catalyst for many positive changes in your life.

Being able to identify your values and strengths to incorporate into your positive self-talk, recognise what you are good at and what you have achieved are all part of making those steps in creating more positive self-talk in your life. When you get positive comments and compliments from other people, it is okay to accept the compliment. People who look, think, and act in a positive way communicate that loudly into the world.

If doubts and negative self-talk appear, try and turn them into positive self-talk or neutral observations. If you have the negative selftalk of, ‘I’m no good at this’, re-frame it into a question such as I have not tried that before but I have done…….and yes it was hard but I achieved it. Identify what has worked previously

and what steps/strategies you used to succeed. Another great one to say to yourself is ‘I can do hard things’. To break the cycle of negative self-talk, try these tips. Try and become aware of when you are speaking negatively to yourself. Noticing you are having a negative self-talk moment is the first step to working through the challenge or problem you might be having. Challenge your thoughts - ask yourself ‘is this true’ and most often your answer will be no. Negative self-talk is exaggerated and will not happen. Look at different ways to explain or challenge the thought, look from a different perspective, writing down your thoughts often helps to put it into another perspective. You can also use a word or visual strategy to stop the thought such as the saying, glass half full or imagine a rubber hammer squashing the thought and replacing the thought with a positive or neutral one, ask yourself what a more helpful thought might be.

Recognising negative self-talk will take time and changing it takes practice, it will become easier the more you bring your awareness to the negative thought and challenge it. Over time you can change negative self-talk for more positive self-talk and improve your wellbeing.

Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself.

Do you eat well but still feel sluggish or carry extra weight?

Disspain

Amelia Disspain has been practising yoga since she was a teen, and has been teaching for over 20 years. She is incredibly knowledgeable and loves sharing her practice with the community.

Hi Amelia. Can you tell us a bit about your journey as a yoga teacher and how you got into it?

I first started practising yoga in my late teen years, and as a very un-sporty, anxious person it quickly became a regular practice. I began to feel a sense of connection to my physical body and the ability to see myself as separate from my thoughts and emotions.

I took my first teacher training as a way to learn more about yoga - but with encouragement from my teacher - began teaching right away. Initially I wanted to teach yoga to support people who wouldn’t normally be comfortable

starting a yoga practice to find a way to connect with themselves in a non-competitive environment. I taught and studied yoga full time in Sydney for around 10 years before I moved to Bellingen in 2010. What do you love most about yoga practice, both personally and also in sharing it with the community?

I love so many things about yoga practice. I love that yoga is a living science and art that has so many aspects to it - everyone can find a way to practise. The yoga journey helps open the heart and clear the mind, to ultimately discover the transcendental self, the atma or the divine. The insights of yoga that were discovered 5000 years ago are still valid today. Humans are

fundamentally the same, and yoga’s ultimate objective is the union of body, mind and spirit, which leads to freedom, compassion and harmony.

Personally, my yoga practice has taken many different forms over the decades but it has always given me a sense of reconnection with a feeling of steadiness inside. A feeling that through all the challenges of life everything is going to be okay. I practised and taught through pregnancy and motherhood, heartbreak and health challenges. Yoga always made me feel better.

In our community I love watching and hearing about how regular yoga practice creates positive shifts in people’s day to day lives - the mum who can sit on the floor longer to play with her kids without back pain, the recovering addict who finds a connection to internal steadiness, or the person recovering from an eating disorder who tells me their motivation to move their body now comes from self love. There are so many examples of these internal shifts that come after time working with different tools of yoga - they may not present as dramatic transformation, and we may only notice them with hindsight, but they are so important and precious. I feel so lucky to teach yoga and feel so blessed to have such a wonderful yoga community around me. You have a studio in Bellingen, can you tell us a bit about the studio and the team of teachers you have there?

I started teaching yoga classes in the Bellingen Primary School hall. After a few years the classes grew in size enough that I managed to find my own beautiful space right in the centre of town, purpose built by an incredible local artist and builder, which I could dedicate to a full timetable of yoga classes.

I have found some wonderful, experienced passionate teachers who run their own classes at the studio. Nicola, Emma, Tara, Nadine, Jo and Jemima are all dedicated yoga practitioners who teach yoga with their own unique approach. My dream was to create a peaceful sanctuary, an inclusive, community space for everyone to come and learn about and practice yoga.

for several common ailments.

I have been running yoga retreats with a dear friend of mine who runs a yoga school in Sydney - Liz Bennett - for about 9 years now. We have found that they can be an incredible time of rejuvenation and nourishment for people.

A yoga retreat is an opportunity to step back from the pressures of day to day life, to restore quietness to your mind and remind you of the essence of how you are without the distractions of our modern lives. It’s a very special gift to yourself that’s deeply replenishing.

To spend time in nature, be nourished with wonderful food and company, lovingly look at habits that are no longer serving you and make gentle changes to foster vibrant health and well-being.

In 2024 we are offering four retreats. Two in the Byron Hinterland, one in Bali and one in Portugal. You don’t have to be ‘good at yoga’ to join our retreats - we design our classes to support our individual guests to leave glowing! You can find out more about our retreats on

yogabellingen.com

You have started a $5 community class that you run at Yoga Bellingen, can you tell us about how this works and how the idea came about?

Yes! On Fridays at 5pm we offer a $5 yoga class. The idea behind this is twofold - a way to support people who were struggling to afford regular yoga classes and a way to raise money for a local charity doing important work in our community. This class is open to everyone - simply book in and come along with your $5! So far, it has been a wonderful success with the class booking out each week.

What is the charity that you’ve chosen to support through these classes and why did you choose it?

All money taken from the class is donated to Warrina Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Services. Warrina work in the Bellingen, Nambucca and Coffs Harbour areas to support women and children to live a life free of violence and abuse. We wanted to support someone local and non-violence is an important tenet of yoga philosophy.

You’re currently studying yoga therapy? Can you explain what this is and how you hope to use it to support people in the community?

Yoga therapy is the adaptation of yoga

practices for people with health challenges. Yoga therapists prescribe specific regimens of postures, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques to suit individual needs. Medical research shows that Yoga therapy is among the most effective complementary therapies for several common ailments. The challenges may be an illness, mental health challenges, a temporary condition like pregnancy or childbirth, a chronic condition associated with ageing or something like long COVID.

I started studying Yoga Therapy as I noticed more and more people looking for support with health and lifestyle challenges alongside treatment from their doctors, and I wanted to find a system that had a clear path to follow supported by research and practical application. I am studying with Svastha Yoga - a school based in India - the main teacher Ganesh Mohan is a medical doctor as well as a yoga therapist so the course is well informed by modern research while being rooted in yoga tradition.

Are you currently battling the dreaded symptoms of hay fever? If you find yourself with itchy, tired eyes and a general sense of discomfort, rest assured that you’re not alone. Hay fever and allergies are a common woe during this time of the year. However, what might start as a seemingly innocuous irritation can escalate into a more serious issue if left untreated, potentially leading to sinus infections and further complications.

The telltale signs of hay fever can manifest in a variety of ways, and it’s important to be vigilant about seeking the appropriate treatment to prevent the escalation of symptoms. Talk to your pharmacist if you have these symptoms:

• facial pain and persistent pressure (especially when leaning forward)

• a disconcerting flow of green or yellow mucus from your nose down your throat

• a blocked nose

• throbbing headaches

• toothaches

• loss of taste and smell

• bad breath or bad taste in the mouth

• fatigue

• sore throat

• persistent coughing

fever

The good news is that pharmacists hold a valuable secret in their arsenal: dual product therapy!

This innovative approach involves simultaneously treating various symptoms with distinct products, tailored to address each concern effectively. Imagine encountering a scenario where you’re grappling with both dry skin and a pounding headache – you wouldn’t tackle both issues with a singular solution. In a similar vein, a singular antihistamine tablet might provide partial relief for certain allergy symptoms, but it isn’t necessarily equipped to combat others, such as a stubbornly blocked nose.

COFFS LAW CO.

EXPERTS

Kymberlei Goodacre: Take us back to the beginning. What is the history of the business?

I began practicing law in 2006. I was inspired to study law working in the legal system since 1993 in the ACT and NSW. The barristers and solicitors I worked with kept telling me “you were made to do this!” They were right.

After admission I worked extensively for Legal Aid NSW in the civil and family law jurisdictions until I formed Coffs Law Co in 2014. I wanted to provide legal advice for your life – no matter what path you walked.

At Coffs Law Co we give you straight shooting, effective, reality based legal advice for your life. Our team works with you to resolve your legal issues favorably and efficiently. We don’t like to pussy foot around, we want to get things done. Coffs Law Co works tirelessly to get you the results you want efficiently!

When I created Coffs Law Co my drive was to empower clients through separation involving parenting disputes and property disputes (now even pet disputes). Being a twice divorced, single

mum of two, with two different fathers for my two children: I get it! I’ve lived it! There’s no judgment in Coffs Law Co. We want to get through this with your dignity and confidence intact so you can get on with living your best life. Being a single mum I’m extremely passionate about achieving the best outcomes for children. I work with my clients to attain child-focused, age appropriate, safe parenting solutions to promote your children’s potential after separation and beyond. I am also a qualified independent children’s lawyer, working to put the voice of your children before the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia whilst pursuing their best interests.

My comprehensive civil law background working with clients to assist them to buy and sell homes, understand loan documents and/or guarantees, developing end of life planning documents, including financial and health decisions in life is an additional service Coffs Law Co offer.

We are providing a holistic approach to legal services for your life, no matter what stage of life you are in.

Who makes up your team and what are their roles?

Coffs Law Co has a fabulous team. On coming into our office you’ll be greeted by Alannah Slater. Oliver has 5 years post qualification experience, and thoroughly relishes the property aspects of family law, whilst balancing his interest in parenting matters with his studies to become an independent children’s lawyer. Oliver assists the profession by volunteering as Vice President of the Coffs Harbour Family Law Practitioners Association.

Emma is a newly minted lawyer, having been admitted last year. Whilst Emma has only been admitted over a year, she has been working in legal practice for over six years and has developed a well-rounded working knowledge of conveyancing and family matters. Emma is also a young lawyer representative in the Clarence River & Coffs Harbour Regional Law Society.

What type of law do you practice in?

Coffs Law Co prides itself on providing holistic family law advice.

We also practice in the Children’s Court of NSW care and protection jurisdiction assisting parents who have had their children removed, or representing children who are within out-ofhome-care.

Coffs Law Co provides advice on conveyancing, whether you are buying or selling. This is an area of law Emma is passionate about, having worked primarily in conveyancing prior to being admitted as a lawyer.

Coffs Law Co gives advice on loan, guarantees and estate planning. This is an area of law that dovetails with our family law practice, given finances and estate planning often need revisiting upon the breakdown of a relationship. What are the top qualities of an excellent lawyer?

Apart from knowledge and experience in their practice area, lawyers should have the ability to build a professional relationship with you. To do this, we listen first. We want to hear your story. We can help you achieve your goals when we understand your life. From what you

tell us, we can then explain the law to you, how it may affect you and provide options to you moving forward. By developing your understanding of the law, and how it applies to your circumstances, we want to empower you to make informed decisions to build a better life after the crisis of family breakdown.

What is your greatest accomplishment to date?

Helping clients through the distress of separation, co-parenting and developing their confidence to resolve their legal dispute effectively and move on to live their best life. Having gone through two divorces, having two children to two different fathers, I hope I provide a strong example of what you can achieve after these distressing times. You can be a strong sole parent. You can operate a successful business. You can complete your higher education. You can be financially independent. You are allowed to love life after separation.

How do you define professional success?

Personally, I define professional success when I see parents I have assisted living their best life with their kids after family law proceedings. I may see them at the beach or enjoying other

local activities together and that makes my heart sing.

What advice would you give to someone looking to practice law?

If you are interested in practicing law, approach our local Clarence River & Coffs Harbour Regional Law Society to have someone talk to you about what it means to practice law. TB LAW

Take us back to the beginning. What is the history of the business?

TB Law, aka Ticli Blaxland Lawyers, is the longest standing law firm in Coffs Harbour. The practice was first established in 1940. The firm’s strong history has provided a solid foundation for the firm to grow and take on the varied challenges that the profession faces today.

Who makes up your team and what are their roles?

TB Law currently has eight employees, including three registered solicitors. Some of our staff offer 30+ years experience while others are relatively new to the profession and are currently completing a law degree.

Our solicitors are well-versed in a variety of different matters. The principal of the firm, Manny Wood holds a Masters Degree and is an accredited specialist in wills and estates.

What type of law do you specialise in?

We have chosen to focus on wills and estates.

We believe it is important for firms to specialise, so that they can develop the skills and experience required to provide a high level of service in a chosen field.

In terms of estate planning, we are aware that there is no such thing as a “simple will”. Every client has unique circumstances and different goals they wish to achieve. We have the ability to provide tailor-made estate planning packages that cater for a variety of different circumstances, including blended families and large estates, focusing on asset protection and tax minimisation.

We offer a highly efficient probate service and we pride ourselves in finalising estates as soon as possible, whilst ensuring that executors and administrators are properly protected. When it comes to estate disputes, our expertise is unmatched locally and we are not afraid to take on big city firms when it comes to challenging wills and estates or defending claims. We can settle matters early if the parties are in agreement but we are also well-equipped to represent our clients in court.

TB Law’s other area of expertise is property law, which includes commercial transactions, leases, property development and conveyancing.

What are the top qualities of an excellent lawyer?

An excellent lawyer should have a comprehensive understanding of the technical aspects of the legal theory that relates to a

particular matter but also have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with their clients and work towards the efficient resolution of matters on a practical level.

How do you define professional success?

Reputation. Our firm and our individual solicitors have developed an enviable reputation for providing quality and trusted legal advice. There is nothing more rewarding than attracting new clients on the basis of a referral from past clients who can attest to our proven track record. What advice would you give to someone looking to practice law?

Find a mentor who is enthusiastic in their approach to practicing law and who is willing to invest time into your professional development. Find a firm that has high standards in terms of quality control and the general administration of a legal practice.

Adopt a life-long approach to learning.

HANNAH MURRAY

Take us back to the beginning. What is the “backstory” that brought you to your career path in Law?

Growing up in Coffs Harbour, I developed a strong sense of community, and I was also fascinated by world issues. Ultimately, I decided to go into law because I wanted to help people and I felt a law degree was the best way I could make a difference. It led me to a career that fulfils my desire for justice, and I also enjoy getting to meet interesting people and hear their life stories. What type of law do you specialise in and why did you choose to practice in this area?

I specialise in asbestos, silica and dust diseases claims and I’ve worked in the team since 2016. I chose to practice in this area so that I can help

everyday Australians and their families who are suffering from a dust disease through no fault of their own. People don’t often realise how common dust diseases are and sadly, this is still a growing area of the law. We are continuing to see workers with life shortening and devastating injuries. What’s worse is people don’t often realise asbestos is still present in 1 in 3 homes, schools, hospitals, and the buildings we work or visit. Silicosis is an emerging issue, with unregulated industries such as kitchen benchtop manufacturers. Every case is unique, and every story motivates me to help my clients achieve justice.

Who makes up your team?

Our specialised team is made up of 14 lawyers, who have over 40 years of experience in handling dust disease cases. Our lawyers are based all over Australia. We offer home, office, or remote office

appointments, and regularly travel to regional areas and interstate to meet with our clients. I am honoured to be able to help people around Coffs Harbour and make a difference in my hometown.

What advice would you give to someone studying law?

Work experience is invaluable. I encourage law students to use their time while studying like I did to gain work experience or to volunteer their time at places like Community Legal Centres. You never know where it may take you!

How can we get in touch?

I would be happy to talk to anyone who is thinking of a career in law or to anyone who is suffering or knows someone suffering with an asbestos or silica related condition.

Put simply, we solve problems and add value, that’s why our clients stay with us for the long term.

An excellent lawyer doesn’t just answer a client’s question; they identify and address issues and opportunities that the client didn’t even know existed.

The other sign of an excellent lawyer is that they know you and your business. A good lawyer is part of your team, not just a mercenary who rides in when there’s trouble. We try to understand and be part of what you’re trying to achieve.

What do you consider your major strength in law?

Our expertise and focus on commercial outcomes. You’d be hard pressed to find another firm between Sydney and Brisbane that has more accredited specialists than FWO. That means our clients can trust the advice they are given.

STATE OF PLAY

United by the Matildas: A Triumph Beyond the Field

Alittle over 20 years ago, as the world watched the Sydney Olympics unfold, Australia stood proudly on the international stage. Fast forward to today, and once again, our nation finds itself wrapped in collective euphoria. This time, the credit goes to the heroic Matildas. Their journey to the World Cup semi-finals has done more than just boost our national morale; it has united us in ways that go far beyond sport.

Live sites sprouted across our towns and cities, where passionate fans adorned in green and gold gathered, creating an electrifying atmosphere, reminiscent of those heady Olympic days.

Every evening, families huddled together in their living rooms, hearts racing, eyes glued to their TV screens. Parents, siblings, and children, each sharing the highs and lows, the elation and heartbreak that came with every kick, every save, and every goal. It wasn’t just about the game; it was about bonding, making memories, and being part of a national moment.

Communities showcased the Australian spirit at its finest. Live sites sprouted across our towns and cities, where passionate fans adorned

in green and gold gathered, creating an electrifying atmosphere, reminiscent of those heady Olympic days. These weren't just places to watch a match; they were symbols of unity, places where strangers became friends and where every cheer echoed with hope and pride. Such moments affirm the strides women's sport has made in our country. The Matildas aren't just footballers; they're trailblazers, changing perceptions and inspiring countless young girls. Their quarter-final victory against France will be etched in our memories for generations. The nerve-wracking penalty shootouts, where every heartbeat resonated with hope, will be told and retold, a testament to perseverance, grit, and sheer determination.

These moments underscore why our investments in sport are more than just about infrastructure; they're investments in our Australian culture and way of life. Sporting achievements transcend boundaries, creating shared experiences, and fostering national unity. It's why, when I reflect on the NSW

Liberal and National Governments decision to fund state-of-the-art stadiums at Moore Park and Parramatta, it fills me with immense pride. But the bigger picture is even more critical. While international accolades are important, the foundation of sport lies at the grassroots. Recognising this, the NSW Liberal and National Government introduced the $200 Active Kids Vouchers, aiming to ease the financial pressures families faced, enabling school-aged children to chase their dreams, and perhaps, become the next generation's sporting heroes. Who knows, maybe the next Sam Kerr could have been one of the beneficiaries?

However, the recent decision by the Minns Labor Government to slash this program by 85% deeply concerns me. Cutting back on such initiatives doesn't just deprive kids of playing sport, it potentially robs our nation of future champions. Champions who, like the Matildas, have the power to inspire, unite and make us immensely proud.

We owe it to our future generations to foster their dreams and aspirations, be it on the football field or beyond. The Matildas' journey in this tournament is a glowing testament to the heights we can achieve when we come together, work hard, and dream big. Let's ensure we continue to create the right environment for such dreams to thrive.

Can you tell us a little bit about your business?

For 12 years a character called Cartoon Chef has silently been teaching children across Australia how to draw as a regular children’s activity feature in the West Australian and Sunday Telegraph newspapers, with 600 cartoon strips to date.

With the help of Chef, I teach children how to draw with animated multimedia drawing workshops at the National Cartoon Gallery. Drawing is a skill that has empowered me to help others with creative solutions driven by design.

Cartoon Chef is an entertainment and education brand managed by my business Media Magic. I have a background in illustration, animation, and the media industry while working part time in my Operations Assistant role for Restaurant Brands Australia, a NSW franchisee of 72 KFC and 11 Taco Bell restaurants.

What’s your favourite part of the work you do?

I love bringing ideas to life and unlocking creative potential in myself and others. I believe that drawing empowers children and people of all ages by developing critical thinking skills that can be used in many aspects of work and business – not just as fun pursuits. Drawing is

productive, fun, expressive, analytical, healthy and builds confidence.

Who is your greatest influence in business?

At 28 I feel I’m quite young on the business scene. From a young person’s and female’s perspective there have been many challenges to opening up my authenticity and passion over the years, both as a striving regional female leader and as a hidden cartoonist. In my early days, there were no mentors or clear pathways for my career interests so I have relied heavily on self-mentorship and autodidacticism. Along the way, there have been key characters who inspire me greatly. My father David Knight continues to guide me towards unlimited potential and pursuing our creative heritage. If not for my leadership team in Restaurant Brands Australia I would not have the strong females in leadership roles to look up to. Rebecca McLellan, Operations General Manager provides me with confidence and freedom to lead and speak with heart, and recently Neil Manson, who guides confidently with a wealth of knowledge in business networking and strategy.

Have you always lived on the Coffs Coast?

I have a quote when networking: “You always come back home to Coffs”. I’ve lived most of my life in Coffs Harbour. I relocated to Brisbane for a year to study design but moved back home to pursue an influx of local freelance

work. There’s a lot of hidden talent here on the Coffs Coast, and a lot of people who have ventured far and wide to return or make it home. I’m grateful that we live in a beautiful city, with all the modern necessities within a 20 minute drive whilst maintaining a divine connection to nature with respect to our beaches, lush forests and Coffs Coast creatures. What piece of advice would you give women making their way in the business world?

You’re allowed to ask for what you desire. Explore what it means for you to show up as your authentic self and passionately lead from the heart in business. It can be easy to get stressed about the complexities of finances, structure and logic. Instead, we can relax into expressing ourselves through our work and trust that we can ask for and receive help when needed.

EDUCATION UPDATE

THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION IS BRIGHT

As a school principal, I am excited about the innovative ways we are a racting and retaining excellent teachers of all ages and experience levels. e future of education is looking bright.

Our school has implemented several new programs to appeal to both new and seasoned teachers. We have increased our focus on teacher wellbeing and work-life balance through policies like flexible scheduling, more planning time, and wellness initiatives like yoga and meditation classes. Teachers have appreciated these efforts to reduce burnout and stress. Just this week, one of our most experienced teachers said “thanks for organising the Teams of Practice this afternoon. They were really helpful. I love a staff meeting when I feel that I leave with more tools in the teaching kit.”

For newer teachers, we have robust mentorship programs, continued professional development, and leadership opportunities. I’ve found these things not only help retain teachers but also empower them to grow to become better educators.

We are also leveraging technology in new ways to engage students and make teachers’ lives easier. We have developed an AI investigation team to look at ways that AI will be able to lighten the load for teachers while still maintaining academic rigour. The goal of this team is to showcase practical strategies that allow our teachers to have more time to focus on teaching complex skills like critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. We explicitly encourage teachers to incorporate technology in thoughtful ways to enhance learning.

For newer teachers, we have robust mentorship programs, continued professional development, and leadership opportunities.

mentoring opportunities and employing them as “trainee teachers” while they are still completing their tertiary qualifications. The vision for this program is to create and support the next generation of educators.

There are always new challenges in education, but I couldn’t be more hopeful. Teachers are the heart of any school. With creativity and commitment to supporting our teachers, I know we can continue adapting to attract, support and retain talented educators. It is clear great teachers want to work in innovative schools where they are empowered. The future looks bright, and I’m excited to lead the way.

NEW COURSES

ON THE HORIZON AT SOUTHERN CROSS UNI

Southern Cross University will introduce two significant new health courses at Coffs Harbour in 2024, the Bachelor of Counselling and the Master of Nursing (Graduate Entry).

The Bachelor of Counselling will debut at Coffs Harbour campus in Term 1 (March) 2024, providing a foundation in psychology, assessment and interventions, counselling theory and practice and building relationships.

Course Coordinator Professor Ebi Cocodia said students will have access to the latest research, putting it into practice with practical placements of 200 hours.

“There have been tremendous advances in the counselling field over the last 10 years. The new degree integrates mental health and wellness/strength-based models, encouraging and equipping counsellors to work with the whole person. The course aims to produce self-reflexive counsellors,” Professor Cocodia said.

In addition to Counselling, a new Master of Nursing (Graduate Entry) at Coffs Harbour campus enables students who have a Bachelor degree to become a Registered Nurse in just two years. The course is ideal for graduates of health degrees who wish to transition into nursing or graduates from other disciplines

who wish to pursue a healthcare career with robust employment prospects.

Course Coordinator Associate Professor Sam Lapkin said the degree is designed to give aspiring nurses the essential professional knowledge, skills, and clinical experiences needed for a successful career in nursing and health.

“Theoretical knowledge is solidified through hands-on clinical laboratory learning experiences and clinical placements under close supervision. These clinical experiences are thoughtfully offered in diverse healthcare settings, including local, regional, and remote facilities. This approach ensures students gain invaluable learning experiences that prepare them for the challenges and rewards of realworld nursing practice,” Associate Professor Lapkin said.

For those considering a career change to

IT, or seeking to understand how the latest tech relates to their professional field, a new suite of online postgraduate courses in computing will also be on offer at Southern Cross from 2024. Designed as ‘nested’ qualifications, students can choose to study a little or a lot, and at their own pace. A student might choose to commence with a six-month Graduate Certificate in Computing before advancing to the Graduate Diploma of Computing and then on to a Masters or they can dive straight into the Master of Computing with its specialisations in Big Data Analysis, Pervasive Computing or Smart Environments. The courses offer a range of career possibilities in Information Communication Technology, according to Course Coordinator for the Master of Information Technology Management, Dr Vinh Bui.

“We created the Master of Computing and the associated degrees to allow professionals from other fields to learn about information technologies and develop sufficient knowledge and skills to apply information technology to solve problems in their domain,” Dr Bui said.

“Knowledge of computing is critical to effectively operate in the future.”

Bachelor of Innovation with Honours nurturing tomorrow’s change agents

Design thinking and leadership are skills are in strong demand in today’s world of rapid change. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over half of businesses reported introducing a form of innovation in the twoyear period to 30 June 2021.

The new online Bachelor of Innovation with Honours is a direct response to industry needs and a timely addition to the University’s course portfolio. Southern Cross is a champion of innovative approaches to education through initiatives such as the revolutionary Southern Cross Model and the innovation incubator Live Ideas.

The Bachelor of Innovation with Honours develops critical skills in communication, digital engagement, problem solving, project management, taking initiative and teamwork. Students apply their research and creativity across a range of contexts.

The degree includes an embedded industry research project which provides a practical and substantial work placement and develops skills in research methodologies. Students will investigate real-life problems with global implications and develop creative solutions.

The one-year course is a pathway from Southern Cross University’s Bachelor degrees for students who wish to build their knowledge in research and creative thinking.

Associate Dean (Education) at SCU College,

Associate Professor Suzi Syme, said the degree will cultivate agents of change with impact.

“The course is designed to be creative and exciting with real-world experiences and opportunities. Students will learn how to apply their subject knowledge expertise from their undergraduate degree in real situations,” Associate Professor Syme said.

“It also meets the demand from employers for graduates who not only have academic grounding in evidence-based approaches to project management but also real-life application. They understand how to apply innovative solutions to complex global problems.”

Southern Cross University will offer more than 100 undergraduate and postgraduate courses in 2024. All courses are offered in immersive six-week terms, an academic model known as the Southern Cross Model. It’s a unique learning experience in Australian higher education that has seen significant increases in student completion rates, grades and course satisfaction.

Coffs CoastHockey

Hockey Co s Coast is growing and expanding, continually shaping its players into the strongest hockey players they can be through its impressive development programs, dedicated coaches and strong leadership. We spoke to President Dean Herbert and Vice President Kieran Marshall about the club and its plans for the future.

Can you give us an overview of Hockey Coffs Coast and the number of NSW Representatives in this Association? How has the representation evolved over the years?

Hockey Coffs Coast Overview: Hockey Coffs Coast is a regional hockey association located at the Sports and Leisure precinct. The association has gained recognition for its strong junior development programs and impressive representation in higher-level competitions. This success can be attributed to the leadership of dedicated coaches and the commitment of the association to nurturing young talent. Over the years, Hockey Coffs Coast has seen an evolution in its representation at higher levels of hockey. This evolution can be attributed to various factors, including:

1. Strong Junior Programs: The success of Hockey Coffs Coast's junior programs has been pivotal in nurturing young players and providing them with a solid foundation of skills and knowledge.

2. Dedicated Coaching Leadership: The

association's emphasis on quality coaching has played a crucial role in shaping talented players. Effective coaching helps players develop their skills, tactical understanding, and overall game performance.

3. Community Engagement: A supportive and enthusiastic community can contribute to the growth of a sport. The engagement and involvement of players, parents, and supporters have likely contributed to the positive trajectory of Hockey Coffs Coast.

Recognition from HNSW: The recognition and acknowledgment of Hockey New South Wales further affirms the association's success in developing players and contributing to the broader hockey landscape.

You have a large group of players heading to the upcoming Masters Nationals event in Perth. Could you elaborate on the significance of this event for Hockey Coffs Coast and how it reflects the association's growth and development?

The Hockey Australia Mega Masters - Mens and Womens is being held in Perth over 3 weeks Sept-Oct, and Hockey Coffs Coast has over 20 players representing their state from over 34’s through to over 60’s. At this

tournament they will be selecting the World Cup teams in their respective age groups and these are being held in 2024 at Cape Town, South Africa and Auckland, NZ.

This will be one of the largest groups representing their state at national levels. How does such a representation contribute to the overall visibility and recognition of Hockey Coffs Coast?

HCC has always strived to ensure state representation is a part of our development and growth in Coffs from Juniors through to Masters levels.

The juniors from Hockey Coffs Coast have been participating in nationals events across Australia. Could you share some highlights of their performances and experiences this year?

We have some great stories in our juniors in our rep levels:

What strategies have you implemented

to foster the growth of hockey in Coffs Harbour? How do you envision the future of hockey development within the region?

Hockey in Coffs over the last 10 years has developed our coaching numbers amongst our junior clubs and representative teams. Strategies include Hockey Australia Level 1 coaches and Level 2. These are the steps to building in HNSW and Haust strategic plans for coaches. We are working with Brent Livermore OAM and Hockey NSW Development Director, who is leading the way to bring new strategies into associations to develop our coaches and juniors growth. Hockey Australia representatives in the Masters group showcase a high level of skill and dedication. How do you believe their presence contributes to the overall development and aspiration of younger players within the association?

Our Australian reps, Keith Jervis, Nardie Gream and Tania Pollock in the masters age groups recently travelled to NZ for the Trans Tasman Cup, both winning their age groups and taking the gold medal. Having these 3 represent Australia is a tremendous achievement. We have recently had Hayley Fischer picked for the Australian Country team to tour Indonesia. Our juniors look up to these players and aspire to one day hopefully represent Australia and who knows, we could

have a Hockey Coffs Coast junior at the Brisbane Olympics in 2032.

Looking ahead, what are some of the key initiatives or projects that Hockey Coffs Coast has planned to continue its growth and strengthen its position in the regional and national hockey community?

Hockey Coffs Coast's focus on growth and development, especially with the Hockey 5s format and facility upgrades in mind. The emphasis on building a stronger infrastructure, including the replacement of the current surface and the addition of a second synthetic surface, shows a dedication to providing quality facilities for players and potentially attracting international teams.

The vision to transform our facility into an international venue aligns well with the upcoming 2032 Brisbane Olympics. Hosting an international team for their Olympic preparations would not only elevate the profile of our region but also provide valuable exposure and experience for local players and the community as a whole.

Collaborating closely with Coffs City Council demonstrates a proactive approach to securing necessary support and resources for these initiatives. As President, the leadership in driving these projects forward is crucial for the long-term success and growth of Hockey Coffs Coast.

McEwan Mhew

Hey Macca, you recently took part in the Trophy Hunter Snapper Bash. Tell us how you went?

G’Day! Myself, Steve (my Dad), and Brent (second Dad) recently participated in the Inaugural Trophy Hunter 2023 Snapper Bash, and we were fortunate enough to take home the 1st place trophy! The whole experience was truly unforgettable. The event was well-organised, especially considering it was their first time hosting such a competition on the Coffs Coast. Our team went into the competition with a solid strategy in mind. We carefully considered various factors like weather conditions, tide times, and potential fishing spots. Thankfully, our planning and efforts paid off, and we were overjoyed to secure the top spot in the tournament. The moment I stood on the podium holding the trophy alongside my two best mates was incredibly emotional and gratifying. Fifteen years of meticulous fishing went into this!

For those who are unaware, how is a

fishing competition run, and how many teams compete?

Fishing competitions can vary in format, but I can give you an idea on how the Snapper Bash ran. The comp spanned two days, with the first day being a full day of fishing and second only a half day. This format allowed us to target snapper during their most active periods while presenting the challenge of adapting our tactics for varying conditions over the two days - day two was a bit challenging with that wind!

In this particular competition, the winning team was determined based on the largest combined length of 10 snapper caught over the two days. The fish were measured to the fork of the tail to determine their length (as opposed to the tip of their tail). The event attracted numerous teams, each comprised of skilled anglers with unique

strategies, which added to the excitement and competitiveness of the event.

How many fish did you catch, and what was the feeling like when you knew you had won?

Throughout the competition, our team caught 28 snapper. Our largest catch measured 76.5 cm to the fork, while the smallest was still a respectable 57.6 cm. Our team's average snapper length was 64.5 cm to the fork. We practise sustainable fishing methods, so we released all of the fish we caught - let ‘em go let ‘em grow! The feeling of winning was overwhelming. It was a mix of elation, pride, and a sense of achievement. We had invested countless hours of preparation, practice, and dedication into this event, and knowing that all our hard work had culminated in victory filled us with immense joy.

96 COFFS COAST focus
From my earliest memories, my Dad would take me out on fishing trips, and it has been a constant source of joy to spend time with him on the water.

The support and cheers from fellow anglers, friends, and family during the presentation ceremony made the moment even more special. Winning the Trophy Hunter Snapper Bash was undoubtedly a high point in our fishing journey as a team, and it's a memory that will be etched in our minds forever.

You didn't do this on your own. Who were the others on your team?

That's right; I couldn't have done this without my amazing teammates. Fishing alongside my father, Steve, was an incredibly sentimental experience. Our shared passion for fishing has been a bond that has strengthened our relationship over the years. From my earliest memories, my Dad would take me out on fishing trips, and it has been a constant source of joy to spend time with him on the water. To stand together on the winner's podium was truly a cherished moment that we'll both treasure forever.

Our third teammate, Brent Stuart, has been a close friend of ours for over two decades. Fishing has always been a significant part of our friendship, and Brent's dedication and skill as an angler added a valuable dimension to our team. Sharing the victory with Brent was surreal and deeply fulfilling, as it was a testament to the enduring bond we share as friends and fishing buddies.

What did it mean to you taking out the victory with your Dad?

Taking out the victory with my Dad was incredibly meaningful. Fishing has been a shared passion and a cherished pastime that has brought us closer together over the years. Winning the Trophy Hunter Snapper Bash as a

team was a culmination of the countless fishing adventures we've embarked on together. It was like going fishing with my best mate. My Dad and I enjoy great banter and get along really well, making every fishing trip feel like a joyous adventure. You've spent your life fishing. What keeps the passion alive?

It's a cliché thing to say, but what keeps the passion alive is the fact that I can never be disappointed on the water. Whether I'm catching fish or not, being out there on the water is a great way to relax and enjoy what nature has to offer. The tranquility and peace that fishing provides are unparalleled. It's a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and find solace in the beauty of the natural world.

You've fished all around Australia. Where would be your all-time spot?

As an angler who enjoys targeting multiple species, it's a difficult question to answer. However, if I had to pick one all-time favourite fishing spot in Australia, it would undoubtedly be chasing Barramundi in the Top End of Australia. The Northern Territory's Top End offers some of the most pristine and diverse fishing grounds in the country.

The region's rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters

teem with a wide range of fish species, including the iconic barramundi. The thrill of hooking a powerful barramundi and engaging in an intense battle to bring it to the boat is unparalleled. Also, the Top End's scenic beauty and abundant wildlife create an unforgettable backdrop for any fishing adventure.

One thing that sets barramundi fishing in the Top End apart is the presence of the majestic estuarine crocodiles. While it adds a certain level of adrenaline to the experience, it also reminds you of the raw, untamed nature of the area. It's a humbling feeling to be surrounded by such majestic creatures while trying to land a prized catch.

What upcoming competitions are you looking forward to competing in this year?

At this point in time, we haven't had a chance to thoroughly review the fishing competition calendar for the rest of the year. However, knowing our passion for fishing and competition, you can bet that we'll be eager to participate in any snapper competitions within a reasonable driving distance.

To stand together on the winner’s podium was truly a cherished moment that we’ll both treasure forever...

Hey Katy, could you please tell us where your team began and how long you have been playing together?

The team began in 2020 after a few years hiatus. We formed the women’s team to encourage young girls to play rugby. We've witnessed many young players come through the club and progress to bigger and better things. Some of us have been playing together since 2020, forming the core of our senior female players within the club. We always welcome and encourage new faces to

WOMEN’S RUGBY TEAM

join the club and play with us. Every year, our team grows larger, and we are truly proud of this achievement.

What are the age ranges of the women who make up the team?

We have players as young as 15 and as old as 35 on our team. We represent a diverse group, each contributing uniquely to the team both on and off the field.

Who are some players that have excelled this season?

Aheisha McPhillips and Alisa Spichak both made the Mid North Coast Women's representative

squad. Maggie Mcconnachie is another standout player who secured a spot on the under 18 girls' Mid North Coast representative side. Our youngest player, Shoshanna WilliamsLee, also made it to the same squad. Maggie has also played for the ACT Brumbies Super W Squad in Canberra and recently got selected for the Australian Junior Girls Squad. We're thrilled about the potential of our junior players rising through the ranks and achieving great things.

How is the season progressing so far?

We are now at the end of the season and are currently training for the minor semi-finals against the Snappers. It has been a fantastic

year for us. This year's team is the first Marlinettes side to score over 50 points in a game, we beat the Snappers for the first time, and Carissa Byrnes, one of our female players, holds the record for the most tries scored in a single game this season.

What's the sense of community like around the club?

Our club is surrounded by an amazing community that supports us in various ways. Our volunteers, juniors, coaches, and players all rally around the women's team. The strong sense of community is one of our biggest strengths. We're fortunate to have an excellent

coach, Rob, who invests patience and commitment in coaching our women's team, given the varying skill levels we possess.

Could you highlight a standout game from this season?

Defeating the Snappers at their home ground was undoubtedly a highlight. They have been the dominant team for many years, so achieving victory on their home turf was a monumental achievement for both our team and club history. Women's rugby is gaining more recognition and support. How does it feel to be part of this growing movement and contribute to the representation of women in sports?

Reviving the Marlinettes in 2020 was fueled by the desire to involve our junior girls in the expanding women's sports movement. The progress of women's sports in recent years has been astonishing. Even locally, our game attendance is increasing, and interest is growing. An inspiring example of this progress is Kaitlyn Leaney, who transitioned from a Marlinette to the Wallaroos, even competing in the Women's Rugby World Cup last year. She embodies how far women's sports have come.

What activities do you enjoy together outside of rugby? How does the team strengthen its bond off the field?

Our team is tightly knit, and we spend a lot of time together outside of rugby. We organize team breakfasts, dinners, and even plan bus trips for away games. These activities foster strong bonds that translate to our performance on the field.

If you could achieve one thing as a team, both on and off the field, what would it be?

While making it to the grand final would be the ultimate achievement, the competition is tough this year. However, our primary focus is building upon our momentum and nurturing our junior girls to join the senior club. Our coaches and club are working diligently toward this goal, and the senior women's team is excited to contribute. We owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to our dedicated coaches, volunteers, and executive committee, as they are the backbone of our club's success.

Thanks Katy.

THREE FACTS ABOUT

MEANS-TESTED FEES

Providing aged care in a residential service is expensive when you add up wages, equipment and other operational costs. The government pays most of this cost but you may be asked to pay a portion.

How much you pay is means-tested, so the more you have in financial resources, the more you might be asked to pay – but only up to the annual cap of $31,706, with an overall lifetime cap of $76,096 (indexed). The rules for how the means-tested fee (MTF) works is not easy to understand. So what are the top three facts you need to know.

an assessment of your care needs) until you reach the annual cap. Once you reach the cap you stop paying the means-tested fee for the rest of that year. Other fees continue.

Example: Martha’s means-tested fee (MTF) is calculated as $160 per day. She pays this amount (plus other fees) for approximately 198 days until she has paid an amount equal to the annual cap. Then no more MTF is payable until the next year. Unfortunately there might be a delay before Services Australia identify the cap has been reached and allow payments to stop. The provider will refund (or hold a credit) any excess that you have paid.

2. The cap applies to an anniversary year

3. The caps are indexed

Every six months the annual (and lifetime) caps are indexed. You will need to chase the indexing cap, but once reached, the meanstested fee ceases for the rest of the year, despite any indexation during that time. This advice is general in nature and everyone’s circumstances are different. So it’s important to speak to someone like myself who is a licenced financial adviser (I am an Authorised Representative of Count Financial Limited AFSL 227232).

As an Accredited Aged Care Professional TM, I have helped many clients navigate through aged care fee liabilities. It is important to determine the means-tested fee and plan on how to best cover the costs.

1. The

fee is not evenly spread across the year

The annual cap averages $86.86 per day, but you might be asked to pay a higher rate each day (up to $400.08 per day, based on

The annual cap applies to your anniversary year. This generally starts on the date you enter permanent residential care. But if you were receiving a home care package before the move, the year starts from the date your home care package commenced.

Working from home deduction changes for 2022–23

The record keeping requirements and methods for calculating working from home deductions has changed for the 2022–23 income year onwards.

Following consultation with the tax profession, the proposed changes to the working from home fixed rate method have been finalised.

From the 2022–23 income year, the methods available to calculate working from home deductions are the:

• revised fixed rate method, or

• actual cost method.

While the actual cost method remains

unchanged, the revised fixed rate method has been updated to better reflect contemporary working from home arrangements, making it easier to calculate expenses and avoid time consuming apportionment calculations. The revised fixed rate method:

• has increased from 52 cents to 67 cents per hour worked from home

• removes the requirement to have a dedicated home office space

• works out the claim for

- electricity and gas

- phone and internet usage

- computer consumables

- stationery

• allows taxpayers to separately claim the work-related portion of the decline in value

of depreciating assets – such as office furniture and technology.

The revised fixed rate method can also be used by businesses that operate some or all of their business from home to claim homebased business expenses.

If they plan to use the revised fixed rate method for their 2022–23 tax return, they need to have:

• from 1 July 2022 to 28 February 2023 – a record which is representative of the hours they worked from home

• from 1 March 2023 to 30 June 2023 – a record of the total number of hours they worked from home (such as a timesheet, roster or diary) as well as evidence they paid for each of the expenses they incurred that are covered by the fixed rate method (for example, a phone or electricity bill). They will also need records for any equipment they bought to work from home, like technology or furniture (which provides details of the supplier, cost and date acquired.

Can you tell us a little bit about The Shoreline?

The Shoreline offers luxury retirement living within walking distance to the beautiful beaches of Coffs Harbour and the convenience of Park Beach Plaza, our own regional shopping centre. Our community provides peace of mind offering both independent living and residential care within the village.

You look after the independent living part of the village, can you elaborate? Our deluxe one, two and three-bedroom, apartments, villas and terraces provide our residents with a beautiful home and lifestyle second to none with our clubhouse boasting exceptional facilities for the residents to enjoy a variety of leisure activities.

What further development can we look forward to at The Shoreline? Our stunning Headland Terraces on the corner of Arthur and York Streets are about to be unveiled with the scaffolding coming down soon and will be ready for occupation in the next few months. There will also be the release of more beautiful

ground-level villas and our prestige Watermark apartments sometime in the future. What is your favourite part of the work you do? Ultimately my greatest job satisfaction is seeing residents in our Shoreline family happily living their best lives. There are many different individual ideals when it comes to retirement lifestyle. Working with people to help them realise their dream, ease their journey into retirement living and see them settle happily into our village, is the favourite part of my job.

Have you always lived on the Coffs Coast? I came to Coffs Harbour for a holiday in my early 20’s, from Victoria. My family moved here a few years earlier and my idea was to escape the Victorian winter and spend time with my parents, sister and brothers; we’re a pretty close-knit bunch. The warmer weather, ocean swimming, lifestyle and mainly the joy of living closer to my family again, meant I never left.

CREEK Rre

Hey Dianne and Paul, tell us about your business.

Our business is Friday Creek Retreat, tucked away in the beautiful Orara Valley in the hinterland behind Coffs Harbour. We have nine cottages offering private and secluded accommodation on our working farm. We are nestled amongst the trees, hills and green pastures. We offer escape from the hustle and bustle but are just 15 minutes from Coffs Harbour.

The Retreat can cater to a range of needs from couples wanting a romantic escape through to large groups of family and friends celebrating events.

Tell us about your accommodation options and what packages do you have available?

We have 7 one-bedroom cabins which sleep up to 4 people. Each cabin is unique in its decor. These are favoured by our couples for their generous two people spa baths and open fireplaces in winter. We have one large

cabin which is a threebedroom house that can sleep up to 8 people and another smaller two bedroom house. When we have family groups and events the big house is often the centre of attention. We have hosted local businesses using the big house for work events like training and planning. Another local business stayed for three days of immersion in Aboriginal language.

It’s easy for couples to sneak in alone and have a quiet weekend but equally easy for families of 40 to come together in celebration.

We are pet friendly which has become increasingly important for many people. We usually have dogs but have had cats, birds and soon a bunny.

What makes Friday Creek Retreat a unique holiday destination?

We are lucky to have a number of things that make us unique and special. Most of Coffs is focused on coastal life but just over the hill is a completely different lifestyle, a bit of a hidden secret.

The Retreat is part of a working farm and

hosts extensive native wildlife. The place is home to echidnas, turtles, platypus, eagles, koalas and kangaroos along with more mundane ducks, chickens and cows. Many guests come specifically for our two people spas and open fireplaces.

We tend to attract people who want a bit of time out but being so close to Coffs it’s easy for guests who are wanting to access tourist attractions, cafes or restaurants in town or explore the amazing Orara Valley which is full of natural beauty. In the last twelve months our daughter Mahli-Marie and her husband James have begun flower farming behind our vineyard. It’s exciting to watch it grow and see them getting traction with local florists and it means we are lucky enough to have fresh flowers most of the time.

What’s on offer whilst staying at Friday Creek Retreat?

The truth is that many people who come to Friday Creek come to rest and spend time with their loved one. Rainy winter days are a treat when people curl up in front of open fires

and watch the valley clouds pass by or an old movie DVD! Our romance packages involving bubbles, chocolate and bath salts are popular indulgences.

For those wanting a bit more activity we have a tennis court and bikes. We often have guests who are serious about bike riding or bushwalking who disappear for hours on end into the valley.

With the retreat situated on more than 100 acres of bush, gardens, creek and lakes , many of our guests enjoy moving around the property, picnicking on the lake, taking in a spot of fishing or lazing by the creek, reading or doing nothing. Afternoon strolls in the vineyard often include kangaroos and echidnas.

Our beautiful split level pool area has an open kitchen and wood fired pizza oven. For many, learning how to cook their own wood fired pizza with Paul is the highlight of their stay. This area buzzes all day during full retreat events.

Our cabins are self contained so many people cook but we now have a food service which is becoming increasingly popular. Our home cooked bread with local honey and home cooked marmalade is always a hit. Continued over.

Tell us about your events

Whether it’s a work event, a family celebration or wedding most people who come to Friday Creek Retreat are after a relaxing, stress free event. The centre of all of our packages is the accommodation for up to 40 people, sometimes people just want the accommodation. Other times our guests work with local businesses to stage their dream celebration. We often have family groups who are celebrating major birthdays, anniversaries and recently

a surprise pop up wedding in the middle of a large family celebrating the 80th birthdays of the grandparents. It was great fun to help the couple create this. We have also had a number of staged proposals and elopements. We try to go with the flow and work with our guests rather than having set packages. What does a “typical day” look like at Friday Creek Retreat?

A typical day at Friday Creek involves having a lot of time to enjoy the basics, sleeping, eating, bathing and enjoying family and friends.

There is something magical and healing here that we see all of the time. People come and slow down and become quiet and sit in the peace. In winter we often don’t see our guests at all. A large number of our guests are repeat visitors who only visit in winter to nest with the fires and spas. We regularly have people ask if they were the only people in. This is rarely the case as most weekends we are fully booked, but even then there is ample opportunity to feel secluded and alone.

In summer a lot of the day is spent hanging around the pool and barbecues. In the afternoons we look at the cabins on the hills and can see our guests sitting on the verandas enjoying the sunset, watching the cows, listening to the kookaburras settling down.

Of course there are other guests that leave early in the morning and return late into the evening, spending their days exploring the coast or further into the valley. What motivates you in your role and business?

We feel blessed to be living in the Orara Valley and sharing Friday Creek Retreat. We are proud of the valley and the amazing lifestyle it offers. We were lucky enough to find it over 30 years ago. We are so motivated by the breathtakingly beautiful environment that we sit in. Our guests are often surprised when they first arrive and leave telling us they will be back.

We have a strong following of regulars from Coffs Harbour and the surrounding region, who return every year or more often to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays or just to replenish their spirit.

We are motivated to run our business in ways that showcase, protect and preserve our beautiful valley. One of our biggest motivations is to continually innovate how we run our business to ensure that we are doing it in the most sustainable and ecologically responsible way. In the next year we will be working on our eco tourism accreditation. There is so much to learn everyday about how to be the best we can be .

What have you learnt over the past 12 months and how has your business changed?

Like everybody else in the world many things have been thrown up into the air, fallen to the grounds and are now being reorganised. Before COVID travellers booked a long way in advance now we find that many of our guests come on very short notice. The demand for small events like elopments has increased. Many people seem to be craving simplicity.

We learn from our guests all the time. From this we developed our food service which offers simple, homemade, slow cooking with local food where possible. My two day cooked traditional bolognese sauce has been called divine a few times.

We want to really focus on the aspects of our business that allow our guests to really “retreat“. In the next 12 months we are planning to include a therapy pool and sauna. We have recently started working with a visiting massage therapist which has been really well received by our guests .

What or who has been your greatest influence in business and why?

Our guests are the biggest influence. When we first started in accommodation we decided that we wanted to provide spaces we would want to be in and feel revitalised by. We overwhelmingly get great reviews and this spurs us on. Our guest are generous with their feedback and where needed we use it to grow and improve our business

What would you say is your greatest

professional accomplishment to date?

I think staying grounded and continuing to build our business in the face of extreme weather events, COVID, interest rates, inflation and supply issues has been an achievement.

As a family we keep coming back to the dreams we have here. To live well and sustainably, to nurture the space and share our place with others in a way that is healing.

In spite of major supply disruptions we have managed to build our beautiful barn, with its signature, locally made stained glass windows.

Nothing went to plan but we are proud of how it now sits soothingly on the land.

What’s the best way for other businesses or readers to connect with you?

We have a strong local following with a regular stream of locals staying for birthdays and anniversaries. Guests can stay in touch with us by going on our email list, following us on our Facebook and Instagram accounts. Our website has up to date specials especially for those who book directly. Thanks.
