Welcome to the February issue of The Florida Horse, our annual statistical review highlighting the outstanding achievements accomplished by Florida-breds in 2022.

It was another proud year for Florida as 69 Florida-breds won 98 black type stakes of 98 stakes, of which 22 were graded stakes.

For the third consecutive year, Journeyman Stud’s Khozan topped all Florida sires with nearly $4.4 in progeny earnings while Girvin, who stood the 2022 breeding season at Ocala Stud, topped the first crop and juvenile sires with $1.9 million in progeny earnings.

Brethren, who stands at Alan Cohen’s Arindel, was the second leading Florida sire for the third consecutive year with progeny earnings of $3.1 million while Jess’s Dream, who stands at Ocala Stud, rounds out the top three in 2022 with nearly $2.6 million in progeny earnings.

Arindel led all Florida breeders with more than $3 million in earnings followed by last year’s leader, Stonehedge Farm South LLC with $2.8 million. Arindel also led all Florida breeders with six stakes victories in 2022, ahead of Stonehedge LLC and Rustlewood Farm Inc., who had three added-money victories each during the year.

Florida-breds Gatsby, Clapton, Key Biscayne, Lynx, Octane and Turbo all won black type stakes this year under the green and white colors of Arindel, who also led all owners of Floridabreds with $1.9 million in earnings.

Later this year, the 2022 Florida Breeder of the Year will be recognized on a vote by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association board of directors. The board will also vote on the 2022 Horse of the Year and the Broodmare of the Year.
