As the summer sun starts to rise in the sky, foodies everywhere emerge from their winter hibernation in search of the ultimate summer cuisine. Anyone who’s been on a beach trip knows that inconspicuous 5-star shops and little food dives on the marina are a treasure to stumble across. Join us as we highlight some of the best seafood the southern coastlines have to offer! The first stop on our journey south is located in Nags Head, North Carolina, where Tortugas’ Lie serves up some of the freshest catches in the Atlantic. This curious seafood shack rests along the Outer Banks, a small collection of islands off the coast of North Carolina. Just east of the Nags Head Woods Dedicated Nature Preserve, Tortugas’ Lie welcomes and encourages all city-folk and nature enthusiasts alike to stop on by for a quick bite before hitting the dunes. For an eatery that honors Caribbean dishes, look no further than Tortugas’ for the zestiest Cajun shrimp in town. Try their Skewed Shrimp Barbados, a signature dish that features spicy Thai chili shrimp with sweet pineapple chunks, or maybe their classic Baja Fish Taco Platter that is served with sour cream and jalapenos on the side. Also equipped with a unique sushi menu during the off-season, Tortugas’ Lie serves up something delicious for every taste bud. And if the food isn’t enough to win you over, they just might challenge you to a friendly game of beach volleyball. Tortugas’ Lie owns two beach volleyball courts out back of the restaurant and opens the courts up almost every night! With professional nets, pristine white sand, and a turfed area for spectators, you’ll think you’re playing for the big leagues. Work up a mighty appetite running across the sand and scoring points with family and friends, and then head on over to Tortugas’ Lie Seafood Restaurant for a summer beach meal you’ll never forget.

“For an eatery that honors Caribbean dishes, look no further than Tortugas’ for the zestiest Cajun shrimp in town.” Next door in sister-state South Carolina, you can find Hank’s Seafood Restaurant. This upscale seafood restaurant is located in a turn-of-the-century warehouse near the Port of Charleston. Overlooking Charleston’s bustling city market, Hank’s has claimed the title of “best seafood joint in all of Charleston for 18 consecutive years”. And really, who are we to disagree? Flipping through the menu, you immediately notice the care with which Hank’s presents their handcrafted dishes. Choose from their Raw Bar and dine on freshly prepared salmon, ceviche, oysters, and more! 14 | Spring 2019 | Travel South

TYBEE ISLAND, GEORGIA

Last but not least is Drago’s Seafood Restaurant in New Orleans. What better spot to be shucking oysters than in the Louisiana bayou? The Ultimate Seafood Tour would be incomplete without a primary oyster locale. Try Drago’s famous oysters fried, raw, or charbroiled (which is the local favorite). Dozens of foodies flock to New Orleans to try Drago’s incredible oysters every year, and this is your chance, too! This spring learn how to charbroil your own oysters by reserving a seat to Drago’s Cooking with Tommy event. This is the ultimate VIP experience where you and your friends can attend an exclusive cooking demonstration with none other than Drago’s owner: Tommy Cvitanovich, the genius behind New Orleans "gateway oysters." But amazing oysters aren’t all you’ll find down in coastal Louisiana. Make sure to stay in town come April 28th for the start of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Celebrate the birth of jazz and its enormous impact on the music industry by attending countless music festivals, shows, and parties over the course of a week. What better way is there to embrace the magic of Louisiana cuisine, history, and music? Remember: New Orleans knows how to party.

But Tybee Island’s allure goes far beyond Coco’s Sunset Grille. As one of Georgia’s most visited spring vacation spots, Tybee Island is also hosting an Irish Heritage Parade. Dress in all green this season and enjoy this little island’s love of culture, food, and music. Located just 20 minutes away from downtown Savannah, Georgia, you are still close enough to the hustle and bustle of city life. Although this quiet and breezy coastline is the height of relaxation, you’ll never feel stranded on Tybee Island. Tradition in every sense of the word is a staple of southern life, and cuisine is the very lifeblood of culture. And after visiting Garcia’s Seafood Grille and Fish Market, you will believe without a doubt that tradition is what brings food and people together. Arriving in Miami in 1964, the Garcia family wanted to start their own business, making a name for themselves in a brand-new country. And with a passion for fish and family, the Garcias’ dream quickly turned into a reality. Originally starting out as a fish market, Garcia’s Seafood Grille has been catching and cooking their own fish. To this day, Garcia’s sources its own ingredients and provides patrons with only the freshest fish daily. Although dinner at Garcia’s is a surprise every night, their signature dishes like the Chilean Seabass, the Butterfly Snapper, and the Seafood Creole are bound to make your mouth water. Perfectly combining Latin flare with Southern comfort, Garcia’s seafood dishes cater to the wellrounded palette. Enjoy all entree dishes with two sides, from white rice and Garcia’s traditional tostones, to mashed potatoes and coleslaw. After a long day soaking up the sun on one of Miami’s beautiful beaches, you don’t have to commit to a full-course dinner. Drop by Garcia’s adjacent fish market after catching those waves and take some quality catches to go! We know just how important spending quality time with family can be, and with family at the forefront of Garcia’s Seafood, the Garcia family’s legacy grows stronger every day.

Traveling along the southern coastline of America, you are bound to discover some of the most beautiful and delicious treasure. So, pack your bathing suits and flip-flops—we’ll wait for you at the beach.

The new restaurants at The Lodge add to an already robust culinary explosion in Coastal Alabama that was started with the opening of Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina. In 2016, Fisher’s launched the exclusive Southern Grace dinner series, each dinner showcasing the expertise of some of the country’s best chefs, all of whom curate specially prepared multi-course dinners that celebrate the bounty of the Gulf of Mexico. This series, which typically sells out in advance, runs May through August. A pre-dinner cocktail reception allows guests the opportunity to mix and mingle with their favorite chefs before sitting down for this communal, seated dinner. Each dinner in the series offers a relaxed evening full of great food and fellowship—just as you would expect from Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Other new local fine dining restaurants include Playa, Fin & Fork, and Coastal. Unparalleled beauty, abundant wildlife, firstclass food, and sweet Southern hospitality make Alabama’s Gulf Shores and Orange Beach must-visit destinations. Just make sure you order some fresh Alabama Gulf Seafood while you are there.

Museums

IT’S ALL ABOUT PERSPECTIVE

Understanding history is a priceless asset in predicting what our futures can hold. Looking over the progress humanity has made in hopes of living a better life can help us find purpose and appreciate what we have accomplished today. Walking through an old city, it’s easy to see the physical effect of time as the present rises from the past. Likewise, where we came from and what kind of values we uphold today influence how we interpret culture. But how can we express what culture means to us in this modern age? Museums across the country work tirelessly to not only preserve our history and global footprint, but also to understand how that history shapes us as a society by analyzing the art that the past left behind. As with most topics, everything is subjective including your own definition of culture. But what stands true is that these museums are some of the coolest you’ll find here in the south! Our first stop is at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia. This famous museum has housed a highly selective yet varied collection of art for decades. From humble beginnings in a family-owned state house on Peach Street, the High Museum has evolved into one of the most influential art museums of the South. Its prime location in the southeast allows for the local talent to step into the limelight and reveal exactly how culture translates into art. Although the High Museum boasts several collections of unique European and African artwork, its main focus is on curating 19th and 20th century American folk art and contemporary pieces. m The Dali Museu showcases ov s 2,100 of Dali’s work

HIGH MUSEUM OF ART ATLANTA, GA

Heritage and Culture.qxp_Layout 1 3/17/19 10:16 PM Page 2

Make sure to visit the High Museum’s Hand to Hand: Southern Craft exhibit this summer for a closer look at 19th century southern decorative arts. From ceramics to furniture, this niche collection highlights how closely culture and art intertwine. At first glance, everyday objects such as plates, quilts, and baskets don’t seem to convey any kind of meaning. But these displays are living relics of country life in the rural landscapes of the south.

Born from an era of civil unrest budding with social tensions, this exhibit represents the values and ideals held by the artists of that time. Through simplistic and otherwise mundane mediums, early artists convey the importance of a home, family, and acceptance. The High Museum of Art spares no expense in its strong dedication to “supporting and collecting works by Southern artists,” further emphasizing the heart and community of the South. Our next museum takes us down to Florida, where the sun shining in your eyes is more likely to inspire you rather than blind you. Especially after visiting the world-famous Dali Museum. The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida has immortalized the remarkable mind and artistry of painter Salvador Dali. Dali was an artist of deep reflection, introspection, heart, and imagination.

DREAMS OF DALI

VIRTUAL REALITY EXHIBIT

“Step into his

surrealist

mind by visiting the

Dreams of Dali in Virtual Reality exhibit”

Masterpieces made up of landscapes, mathematics, and color, Dali’s works have greatly influenced the iconic art movement known as surrealism. The Dali Museum showcases over 2,100 of Dali’s works, from famous oil paintings like The Persistence of Memory to hundreds of illustrations, drawings, and unfinished pieces. Painting throughout the majority of the last century, Dali had not only mastered surrealism but also acquired a neoteric perspective of life. As a result, Dali produced an abundance of extraordinary and provocative pieces that leaves patrons everywhere yearning to view the world as he did. Luckily, at the Dali Museum, you can try! Step into his surrealist mind by visiting the Dreams of Dali in Virtual Reality exhibit, where modern technology and traditional mediums clash. Learn to see through the eyes of

the great surrealist himself as this exhibit transports you directly into some of Dali’s most creative works. You can also experience Dali’s artistic impact through his collaborations with other renown surrealists of the era in exhibits like Magritte & Dali, where you learn about how two legendary artists reshaped the way we interpret art and history altogether.

Heritage and Culture.qxp_Layout 1 3/17/19 10:25 PM Page 4

And while you’re at the Dali, make sure to visit the appropriately named Avant-Garden. Located on the waterfront of the pristine Tampa Bay, this garden is not your typical outdoor paradise. Inspired by Dali’s incredible landscape paintings, this eclectic yard is arranged into different designs that simultaneously evoke feelings of serenity and whimsy. Due to Dali’s focus on duality, the Avant-Garden unites art and nature, creating a perfectly balanced environment where man-made structures twist and sprout from the ground as technicolor flora naturally clings to every piece of art, including Dali’s Labyrinth. We dare you to get lost in this labyrinth—which is anything but a maze! Revealing a one-way path, the Labyrinth does not confuse you, but rather guides you in the right and only direction: forward. With no wrong turns in this maze of life, you are led directly to its heart by “simple persistence” and are greeted by a tall swaying cypress tree. Inside, outside, and from every angle, the Dali Museum is a must-see experience. It’s hard to reminisce over history without thinking about one of mankind's most intense battles. In New Orleans, Louisiana, the National WWII Museum stands testament to one of the greatest displays of power and destruction humanity has ever known. At the National WWII Museum, you follow the story of America’s impact on the world through her involvement in WWII. Learn about how the war was fought, how it started, and how it has changed the onward course of humanity forever. During the summer, this war museum will hold exhibits like Road to Berlin and In Memory of What I Cannot Say. These special exhibits highlight the war through the soldiers' eyes, taking patrons back in time. Partake in interactive experiences like the Beyond the Boundaries exhibit, which takes patrons on a journey through a 4D simulation of the entire war, from the battle on the ground to the fight in the skies. Or try holding your breath as you submerge underwater with the USS Tang Submarine Experience, boarding the “most successful submarine in World War II”. The National WWII Museum also offers guided tours behind the scenes where patrons can explore rare artifacts of war and learn about the process of preserving sensitive and aging materials. The High Museum of Art, the National WWII Museum, and the Dali Museum all offer an endless array of knowledge, art, and entertainment that is sure to spark in you a sense of wonder and excitement you’ll remember for years to come. No matter where you’re from, or wherever you call home, museums like these encourage you to take stock of what really matters in your life and how that influences your outlook of the world. So, we leave you with one final question: what does heritage and culture mean to you? The answer won’t always be crystal clear because, as with the art you will explore in these museums, everything you see is up for interpretation. Whether you connect to a specific piece of art or to its story, it’s all about perspective.

In 2018, the Ali Center added an Augmented Reality Wall to its newly renovated Lobby, as well as a remodel to its retail store.

Two years before, the Ali Center opened 1,640 square feet of new permanent exhibit space that includes inspiring “next generation” story booths, an interactive timeline of Ali’s humanitarian work spanning six decades, a Poster Pledge “video station,” and searchable digital databases of the Ali Center’s annual Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards. This renovation also included an additional 2,500 square feet of temporary exhibit space that is used for family-friendly exhibitions throughout the year and photo displays that will both inspire and enlighten visitors. Inspiration was Ali’s gift, and his Six Core Principles mark his true legacy—a legacy that has the power to live on, beyond the man, and beyond the walls of the Center. RETIRING IN THE SOUTH

Choosing the right place to retire is fun! Clean air, beautiful communities, and the option to have plenty of weekend trips right at your fingertips are ideal when settling in to your retirement community. Retirement is the time when you get to relax and live your next chapter of life happily. The future holds the best days, so check out a few of these top-rated areas that offer their best to retirees.

CHARLESTON, SC

F L O R I DA First on the list: Florida. Florida is full of places that are ideal for a stylish retirement. From walking the beaches, to enjoying the coastal nightlife and spending sunny days floating in the springs or casting a line, Florida has all you need to maintain your lively reputation. Take Venice, for example. Venice is considered to be one of the best places in the entire state to retire in. Venice got its name from the canals that run through the city, making it both intriguing and romantic. Large cities, such as Tampa, are nearby and have plenty of events and things to do all year long. With over a dozen miles of beautiful beaches, you’ll never want to spend a nice day inside. Venice beach hosts an offshore coral reef as well, so there is an abundance of wildlife, which makes for a great snorkeling trip!

Gainesville is another popular Florida town to retire in. With their beautiful Botanical Gardens, along with the city being home to the 9th largest university in the country, Gainesville has a wide variety of attractions to keep you busy. Take trips to the local museums and art galleries, like the Florida Museum. Cook a delicious meal with the locally-grown produce that you’ll find in all of the Farmer’s Markets around. Gainesville’s historic district also makes for a lovely day downtown, whether you’re wanting to shop in the boutiques or grab a bite to eat. The old structures and Victorian-style houses that line the streets make this city an amazing one to call home.

S O U T H CA R O L I NA Another great place to look into retirement options is South Carolina. For years, people have been traveling to the Carolinas to discover the gorgeous mountain towns that boast the perfect type of retirement community. South Carolina is a great place to start if you’re looking for charming, coastal towns that aren’t too far away from the fresh mountain air. Charleston is, of course, a given. The

picturesque town offers so much to do and so much natural beauty, all packed into one historically composed area. There are a lot of tourists that travel to this area, so if you’re not in the mood for dealing with crowds and busy streets, this may not be the city for you. As far as style goes, however, Charleston is the place to be. Most any restaurant in the town is offering up delectable dishes that are worth a few pictures, along with the many shops and local events that the city proudly displays

GAINESVILLE, FL

CHARLESTON, SC

A L A BA M A Alabama is also a number one choice when it comes to searching for the best retirement states. Particularly, the town of Fairhope is favored as “one of the prettiest towns in the south.” Most homes here have a view of the Mobile Bay, and the town itself looks like something out of a movie, with picture-perfect shrubs and colorful flowers that line the streets. Spanish moss hangs from the trees and the sun bounces off of the bay, making the view itself completely worth the move. The town is driven by a vibrant 55+ community, and there are always events happening at the local adult rec center. Area happenings keep everyone busy as well, such as music festivals, art fairs, bird watching events, and so much more. If you’re looking for a low-cost golf community that also happens to have some of the best bass fishing around, then you’ll want to head straight for Guntersville. This quaint little town is set on Lake Guntersville, which is the largest lake in Alabama. Prepare your days of endless fishing on the lake, where you can enjoy the soft sunsets and peace and quiet.

MOBILE BAY, AL There are 3 local golf courses, as well as others in nearby towns, so a golf adventure here is never far away. The cute little city makes for a wonderful place to live, and the attractions will keep you busy in style for many years to come! These places are the best of the best, and all have breaks on property and other taxes, as well as an overall lower cost of living. From the coast to the mountains, and back again, these stylish retirement communities are calling your name!

Tennessee is considered to be the birthplace of several genres of music, so if your love of music is just as great as your love of history, a trip to this state is for you. Start off by visiting places like Memphis and Nashville to get your musical fix. Nashville is home to the Country Music Hall of Fame, as well as the Grand Ole Opry, which is widely known as “The Show that Made Country Music Famous.” Keep an eye out for the roots of Rock & Roll, arguably found in Memphis. There are well over 100 iconic names in music that all come from the state in general, and Memphis is one city that showcases a bit of history on them all. Take a step back in time while you visit one of the city’s many museums, such as the Rock n’ Soul Museum, Stax Museum, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, and the Blues Hall of Fame. The Blues Hall of Fame alone notes more than 400 names that all brought something to the blues industry, whether it be in full albums, nearly-lost singles, or literature itself. The Stax Museum is actually the original site of Stax Records, which went bankrupt and closed up in the mid-1970s. The area, widely known for its soul music, was dubbed Soulsville USA, and that was the nickname Stax Records gave their studio. This, in large part, was to counteract Motown Records, who called themselves Hitsville USA.

After Stax, head on over to Elvis’s Graceland. Graceland provides an inside look at the life of “The King,” and highlights his accomplishments, family life, and personal aspirations. The estate itself has been dubbed the “most famous Rock & Roll residence” in the nation. Prepare to view a wide variety of assets and memorabilia from the star, including his impressive collection of cars, the family tomb, and a tour of his home and music room.

Music Towns.qxp_Layout 1 3/17/19 10:50 PM Page 4

New Orleanians believe in using music to make the most of the best and worst times. Music is a way to release your soul, and when it comes to soul, New Orleans has definitely got it. Check out places like the historic Bourbon Street or the French Quarter. There is always something going on, and you’ll undoubtedly see a Jazz cat or two hanging out on the corner with their saxophones and trumpets, ready to play a tune for you.

We can’t talk about music towns without paying homage to the great city of New Orleans, Louisiana. New Orleans is known as the birthplace of Jazz. No, there is no specific birthday for the genre, but all can agree that it came from the homes, bars, and streets of NOLA. It is the city of “Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima, Pete Fountain, Harry Connick, Jr. and the Marsalis family.” From festivals and celebrations like Mardi Gras and Jazz events, all the way to funerals, the music never stops here.

In more recent decades, Atlanta has made its way to the forefront of music towns, with heavy influence in genres like hip-hop, R&B, and soul. The city picked up its feet in the 60s and 70s, and by the early 90s, Atlanta was the place to be if you were an up and coming artist of one of the mention genres. With a plethora of producers calling the area home, Atlanta is constantly a

place for signing record deals and introducing new talent to the industry. There are a wide variety of clubs in the downtown district that feature guest DJs and artists from all over the world. If you are a fan of hip-hop and R&B, you won’t regret a trip to ATL. The city also has other genre influences, like Blues and Country, so even if you’re searching for a different musical vibe, Atlanta has something to offer each and every music lover.

Miami is another great music town. There is no arguing that Miami has had some of the best musicians and venues for a long time.

The evolution of genres merging and talent blossoming in the area is uncanny. Longstanding genres like reggae, rock, and salsa have left their mark on the city, and it is no wonder why visitors can’t stay away from the sights and sounds of this place. Everywhere you turn, there is some sort of Cuban and Spanish influence, from the music to the culture itself. In more recent years, Miami has blended the club scene in with the historical music meccas. Now, you’ll notice that genres like pop, disco, and dubstep are filling the streets of Miami. Many artists come to Miami to perform and visit their fans, and a lot of them even buy homes in the area because they’re in the city so often. Whether you’re walking through the club strips of downtown, or strolling the beaches on a sunny afternoon, you’ll find all different types of music in Miami, no matter what time it is. What would life be like without music? Without a way to express ourselves through a tune? We can’t imagine a day without a song, and we know that these cities will fill your ears and your hearts with one you love.

e are starting our journey in the Carolinas, so let’s make our way to the seashore of Cape Lookout first. Located in North Carolina, Cape Lookout is known for being an undeveloped seashore where nature lovers can find peace and quiet, and of course, their kind of beach scene. If cocktails and kids splashing in the water is not for you, you’re better off heading here. From April to November, you will be able to catch a ferry ride 3 miles out to these barrier islands. Go shelling, fishing, or kayaking, or enjoy wild horse watching, birding, and more. If you would like to stay here overnight, there are quaint, rustic cabins available to rent. You can also camp out directly on the seashore as well. Kayaking on the water is one of the more popular activities here. You will want to make sure you set up a float plan with park rangers and let them know what time you are going out. There are more than 100 miles of shoreline, and since you will be in the ocean, the likelihood of you floating away with the tide and current increases. To keep everyone safe, establishing a float plan is necessary. A float plan is nothing more than letting rangers know when you’ll be checking back in. That way, if they don’t hear from you by then, they know to go looking.

With sights of downtown Miami, you can paddle through the waters, explore the emerald islands, and catch a glimpse of the coral reefs. The park is full of history, with findings here of everything from pirates to presidents. You can hike the nature trails, go for a swim or a dive, fish, or snorkel along the reefs. Boating is also allowed here, provided you follow the rules, so feel free to take your own boat right into the park.

If you decide to camp out here, you will need to bring enough food and water to accommodate all who are with you for the entire duration of your stay. This is a primitive island, so even if you’re only staying for one night, bring enough supplies for two. This stretch of shoreline provides the privacy and uncultivated territory that is needed for any rugged beach vacation and is truly paradise outdoors. Let’s head further south to another gorgeous springtime outdoors oasis! Located in Florida just south of Miami, Biscayne National Park preserves the bay and the offshore barrier reefs that surround it. This is a beautiful outdoor destination for the spring season in the south. Ninety-five percent of the park itself is underwater, so this is a must-visit campsite for water lovers.

There are two camping areas within the park and both are located on islands: Elliott Key and Boca Chita Key. This is where a boat will come in handy, as there is no other access to these keys. Shower facilities are available at Elliott Key, but you’ll only find toilets for use on Boca Chita. Still, Boca Chita seems to be the more popular camping island. Both are equipped with grills and plenty of great views and grassy areas. Bring plenty of drinking water with you, as none is provided. As mentioned, you can dock your own boat right on the island, with a nightly fee of course. The best time to go is between May and September, when all fees are waived!

Paradise Outdoors.qxp_Layout 1 3/12/19 3:40 PM Page 4

If you love the outdoors, but you also need the comfort of a hotel, then you should definitely check in at our next stop: The Barren River Lake State Resort Park in Kentucky. The Barren River Lake State Resort Park is a haven for those who love the outdoors, but also prefer to have the familiarities of a luxury getaway. Spend your days on the water, surrounded by the caves and rolling hills of Kentucky, where the contrast between greenery and lapping waves bring you the best of both worlds. You can head out to the marina and rent a jet ski, kayak, or pontoon boat, and hit the waves! If you’re local and would like to bring your own equipment, there are plenty of docks and slips to park your boat or other water toys in.

Looking for something a tad bit more primitive, but still surrounded by options? Go camping at the park’s campground, complete with nearly 100 separate sites. The campgrounds are open until November 1st (they close for the winter), and there are dump stations, a central building with showers and restrooms, and utility hookups as well.

The resort park has a main lodge, the Louie B. Nunn Lodge, which has 51 rooms complete with all of the bells and whistles, and most of which overlook the giant 10,000-acre lake. The lake itself is filled to the brim with hybrid bass, large and small mouths, crappie, catfish, and even walleye! Cast your line and you won’t leave without a catch.

Barren River Lake State Resort Park also has a lighted basketball court, two lighted tennis courts, volleyball, and a shuffleboard court as well. If you’d like to sightsee around the park, take to the hiking and biking trails, which are conveniently paved and wind around the different amenities within the park.

If you’re not looking to stay in the main lodge, try renting out one of the cottages. There are 22 cottages total to choose from. Take your pick between a cottage nestled in the woods and hills, or one with a lakeside view and plenty of open space for fishing or taking a walk along the shore.

No matter if you’re looking for a seaside hamlet or a luxury park, you will be nothing short of amazed by these destinations. Be sure to book your trip in advance, as spring and summer are usually peak seasons for these areas. Enjoy your very own paradise outdoors!

Make your stay a hole-in-one at the golf course on site within the park. The course itself is beautifully manicured and woven deep within the curvy Kentucky hills. This course will test even the best golfer’s skills, as it hosts some tricky shots and tight positions.

Your Own trail in Hendersonville, NC

The Blue Ridge Mountain town of Hendersonville blends outdoor adventure with Main Street charm, retail therapy and rich history to create a must-visit destination. Six special-interest trails allow visitors to create custom itineraries. Hendersonville has long been known as apple country. As people become more interested in where their food comes from, local orchards embrace agritourism, inviting visitors to pick their own apples, take hayrides through the trees and enjoy fresh-pressed cider and apple confections. The Crest of the Blue Ridge Orchard Trail showcases orchards, roadside markets and farm stands that are particularly popular during apple blossom season in the spring and harvest season, which runs from late August through October. Apples aren’t the only crop in Hendersonville. The Farm Market Trail lists five farmers markets across the county offering an abundant selection of fresh food. The Henderson County Curb Market has been a Hendersonville tradition since 1924. In addition to local fruits and vegetables, customers can purchase eggs, meats, cheeses, herbs, jams, jellies, honey and baked goods. In the spring, annuals, perennials and vegetable transplants are available to set out in flowerbeds and gardens. Artists have a special attraction to the mountains of Western North Carolina. The beautiful scenery and quiet tranquility make these hills and valleys a favorite place for practicing fine art and fine craft. Follow the Art Gallery Trail to find handmade jewelry, blown glass, pottery, sculpture, metalwork, paintings and more. From downtown shops on Main Street to small, tucked-away studios, these galleries exhibit the many talents found in Hendersonville and provide opportunities to purchase one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

Some of Hendersonville’s finest crafters express their talents through quilting. The Quilt Block Trail guides visitors to colorful, patterned blocks that hang on the side of barns, buildings and businesses. The quilt blocks honor the craft of quilting and often tell the stories of the places where they hang through their patterns and colors. For example, the block on the old icehouse building has ice tongs worked into the pattern, and the block at the humane society thrift shop has puppies and kittens. This trail has the added benefit of showing off some of the mountain peaks, gurgling creeks and sprawling farms that make up the county’s scenic tapestry. In recent years, Western North Carolina has become known for its handcrafted beer, wine and hard cider. The Cheers! Trail outlines Hendersonville’s producers of artisan spirits. The area is particularly known for hard cider with three cideries operating in the county. Bold Rock Hard Cider, the largest craft cidery in the country, has a state-of-the-art pressing barn, cidery, taproom and food truck in the rural Mills River community. The trail’s three wineries serve a variety of dry and sweet styles made from estate-grown grapes. Hendersonville also has seven craft breweries, from small, local joints to the palatial East Coast headquarters of Sierra Nevada Brewing. Officially chartered in the 1840s, Hendersonville is steeped in history. The Heritage Trail puts together a collection of historic buildings, museums and heritage sites to tell the story of the town and educate visitors about the past. Connemara, once home to the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Carl Sandburg, displays his extensive library and continues the operation of his wife’s dairy goat barn. Oakdale Cemetery contains Wolfe’s Angel from “Look Homeward Angel” by Thomas Wolfe. Flat Rock Playhouse, the state theater of North Carolina, produces highenergy performances nearly year-round.

Hendersonville makes it easy to tailor your Blue Ridge Mountain experience to match your interests. Pick a trail, map your route and let the adventure begin. Free trail brochures are available at the Hendersonville Visitor Center, or they can be downloaded at www.VisitHendersonvilleNC.org.

Grandfather Mountain, NC

GrAnDfAtHeR MoUnTaIn:

WONDERS NEVER CEASE The views are ancient. The experiences are all brand new. Standing at 5,946 feet above sea level — more than a mile high — Grandfather Mountain has been celebrating and sharing the wonders of the natural world since 1952. Spring and summer are some of the most ideal times to visit the nonprofit nature park in Linville, N.C. — less than 15 miles from Boone and 70 miles from Asheville — as temperatures on top are typically 10 degrees cooler than those at the base of the mountain, which are at least 10 degrees cooler than in the surrounding flatlands. One of the park’s best known attractions is the world-famous Mile High Swinging Bridge, a 220foot suspension foot-

bridge that spans an 80-foot chasm at more than one mile in elevation, offering panoramic views of the Western North Carolina High Country. But there’s more to Grandfather Mountain than just views. The park features access to over 12 miles of pristine alpine hiking trails, offering experiences for explorers of all skill levels, with some of the more adventurous trails connecting to the adjacent Grandfather Mountain State Park. All throughout Grandfather Mountain, guests are likely to

spot squirrels, songbirds and other forest animals. But what about the more elusive wildlife? It only takes a visit to the park’s environmental wildlife habitats to come face to face with black bears, cougars, river otters, bald eagles and elk. The majority of Grandfather’s habitats are built around the animals’ actual native habitats, allowing visitors to see them in their natural elements, while offering the furry and feathered denizens ample acreage to roam as they please, even if it means being out of sight for some privacy. All of Grandfather’s resident animals were either rescued after being injured or orphaned in the wild or born into captivity, meaning they’re unfit for release back into the wild.

Grandfather Mountain, NC.qxp_Layout 1 3/3/19 12:55 PM Page 2

To bridge outdoor fun with education, the mountain’s staff of naturalists, rangers and habitat keepers hosts a variety of interactive programs, such as animal encounters, interpretive talks and hikes, a Junior Ranger program for kids, behind-the-scenes tours of the habitats and more. The park also features a nature museum, documentary auditorium, restaurant, 100-plus picnic sites, fudge shop (featuring free samples of homemade, sustainably crafted fudge), special events and more — all included with admission.

Furthermore, every dollar spent on Grandfather Mountain goes right back into the mountain itself, ensuring it will be preserved for generations to come through the efforts of the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation. Grandfather Mountain is located at 2050 Blowing Rock Highway (U.S. 221) in Linville, N.C., just one mile from milepost 305 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. CELINA (TN) - Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Upper Cumberland, and straddling the state line of Tennessee and Kentucky, is a "jewel” a jewel of a lake. Dale Hollow Lake can claim the designation of a jewel for many reasons: unsurpassed beauty, world-class fishing, house-boating, water sports of all kinds, and many others. In days gone by, forgotten by most now, many people equated the lake to flood control and hydroelectric power. These are just some of the things that make up the rich, multi-faceted history of Dale Hollow Lake and two nearby rivers – the Obey and Cumberland. It's a history that includes state, continent and world fishing records, and visitors in the dozens of millions through the decades. From the Southeast to the Midwest, Dale Hollow has long been renowned as a vacation and fishing spot, and lays claim to the world record smallmouth bass. You may not know exactly where Celina is, but chances are great you've heard of Dale Hollow Lake.

In addition to the world record for smallmouth bass, the lake (and nearby Obey River) has yielded numerous state and continent fishing records.

This town, like many others, has seen its share of change through the decades. At different times, it’s been a bustling river town, and the home of a highly-respected boarding school. It’s also been the center of a heavy concentration of industry, and is still the gateway to the pristine lake located nearby. Celina is a former river town that has retained its laid-back, folksy charm, despite the changes through the years. It’s not clear who coined the phrase “The Great Outdoors,” but we have that in abundance in Celina and Clay County. You need to come see the other things we have to do here. Tennessee Mountain Tours

Tennessee is known for its incredible variety of wines and spirits. Tennessee Mountain Tours is a friendly tour service that offers up everything from a short tour of the town, to in depth history tours, and, of course the tour we’re here for, the Moonshine & Wine Tour! The Moonshine & Wine Tour lasts for about 4-5 hours and comes at an affordable cost of about $45-$50 per person. On the tour, you will be visiting approximately eight different wineries and moonshine distilleries, where tastings will be offered along the way, and of course a generous dose of the local history.

Locally-grown grapes put these Tennessee wines on the map, as the rich mountain soil allows for some of the sweetest grapes to grow. The history, friendly faces, and energetic guides on this tour will provide you with something so authentic and so indulging that you may just want to take the tour again. Visitors who have participated on the Moonshine & Wine Tour call it “excellent” and rate it at the top of their tour lists. Maybe it is because of the flavors of moonshine. Maybe it is because of the sweet wines. Maybe it is because of the breathtaking scenery and the good people. We like to think it is the timeless combination of all of those things, and that’s why this is a top tour of the summer for sure!

When it comes to the search for great wine, you don’t always need to head straight for Napa Valley. For a southern-style winery, head to Charlottesville, Virginia. Charlottesville is home to some of the most impressive wineries in the region. With so many wineries in the area, there are plenty of different options to choose from. We encourage you to head for Jefferson Vineyards. Jefferson Vineyards is a family-owned and operated winery that is geographically the closest to town. The estate itself is a part of Virginia’s wine history, and though some of the vineyards have been replanted, there is still a unique, vintage feel to the property. With four separate vineyards, the winery is able to produce quality vino with distinct flavors. There is the Church Vineyard, which produces Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Merlot.

The original tasting room used to be a horse stable, and therefore carries on the rustic charm of the space. The winery tasting room is often used in winter or to host wine dinners, and has a cozy fireplace, as well as high, lofted ceilings with exposed beams. During the summer, you can enjoy the tree deck, which is an inviting outdoor space that puts you in the center of the trees, including a few that grow up through the deck itself. The garden patio is another elegant summer option, with 360 degree views of the Blue Ridge Mountains that surround the property. Bring your pets and children, and let them play in the open field area, where you can enjoy your tasting in the freeing space. The open field is also where concerts and picnics are held, so bring your lunch and relax on the soft grasses. Whether you’re looking for a beer, some authentic moonshine, or a classic glass of merlot, these southern adult beverage destinations are perfect for finding your taste buds’ sweet spot!

Imagine strolling into a walk-in humidor with a surf shop vibe— and awesome beer, too! Cigar City’s numerous awards and rankings prove its popularity. A short drive away sits Angry Chair Brewing. The tap room has a rustic industrial feel with exposed ventilation, custom steel chairs and a ceiling assembled with much of the 1941 building's original wood. Leave your troubles at the door. On the edge of Ybor City, the historic Latin quarter, Coppertail Brewing has gotten a lot of people talking in a short period of time. The two-floor tasting room is expansive and inviting, with enormous, fanciful murals that tell the story of the mythical sea creature that gave the brewery its name.

STRONG IMPRESSIONS Clearly, the locals have got magic on tap. What a place for a beer lover to take over! For those who want a tasty sip, Tampa Bay's beer scene is worth the trip. Hop on the Brew Bus and discover Tampa’s craft brew scene. Travel South | Spring 2019 | 79

A weekend to visit NC wineries is the easiest thing in the world to plan: just drive down the road and when you see a sign for a winery, pop in! This is an industry built around hospitality and the staff you meet at each winery you visit will gladly help you pick your next stop. Ask for a copy of the North Carolina Winery Guide at your ďŹ rst stop or at the Welcome Center as you cross into the state. The Winery Guide lists the wineries with their contact information and location on a map and shows you exactly what amenities they offer. (Hint hint: most wineries will let you bring your four-legged

While Lubbock is known for its six (and counting) award-winning wineries and its grape-growing prowess, there’s something new brewing in the heart of the city: craft beer. From an established local hotspot to the up-and-comers, here’s a look at Lubbock’s best spots for beer lovers. TRIPLE J CHOPHOUSE & BREW CO.

1807 Buddy Holly Ave. This in-house brew company has been slinging suds for years and is undoubtedly a staple in the Depot Entertainment District. Here you’ll find an array of rotating beers from Vienna-style lagers to German-style kolsch to Irish reds and IPAs with decidedly Texan and Texas Tech University-inspired names such as Windmill Wheat, Masked RYEder and Raider Red. While you’re there, sample homemade bread, an order of Choppy Bob nachos or order a steak grilled to perfection.

with a chef-driving mentality, The Brewery LBK’s beers are creative and often incorporate seasonal and local ingredients, like the Honey Blonde Ale. This refreshing staple is brewed with cotton blossom honey sourced from an orchard just miles away. The offerings on tap rotate fre-

The Dillard House

The history of soul food runs deep through the south. From fried chicken and collards, to barbecue and homecooked meals, these establishments are churning out the best of the classics. The Dillard House, located in Dillard, Georgia, has been around since the early 1900s, and is a family-run establishment. At the Dillard House, you’ll find a large farm where you can pet the animals like cows and goats, and enjoy the surrounding mountains that bring in the famous blue-silver mist from the Blue Ridge. The farm is completely picturesque, and hosts will greet you with that expected southern hospitality. What was once a modest home of six rooms, has now turned into a large hotel, with nearly 100 suites and several dozen cottage on site to rent. You’re invited to stay in the house during your vacation, but you’re more than welcome to just head straight to the restaurant for a huge soul food feast.

Frie Steak

Dinner is served family-style, where your servers will place countless amounts of side dishes, as well as several meats, biscuits, and pastries on your table all at once. It feels as though you’re sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner, only you’ll find the best of southern classics before you. Prepare for heaping piles of fried chicken, country ham, catfish, country fried steak, corn on the cob, calico salad, green beans, rice and gravy, creamed cauliflower and spinach, fried green tomatoes, yeast rolls, cornbread, and so much more. The menus change each day, so you’ll be in for a treat each time you come back. Each dish is completely homemade with the secret recipes that have been passed down through the Dillard family generations. The options for side dishes, specialties, and desserts overflow with variety, and the hospitality makes you feel as if you were in mama’s house for Sunday dinner. The Dillard House has been known to host celebrity guests throughout their history, including Walt Disney, Henry Ford, Arnold Palmer, and Thomas Edison, so the professionalism of the house is more than adequate.

Dinner will cost about $20 per person, and everything is endless, so if you ask them to bring out a 4th plate of chicken, expect it in a jiffy! Take a walk around the property after you’ve enjoyed your meal, and you’ll see why people from across the country are raving about this true southern soul food oasis.

Mary Mac’s Tea Room

Tea rooms in the south are known as tiny little hole-in-the-wall cafes that serve a traditional “meat and two sides” meal, and of course, sweet tea and other luncheon refreshments.

MARY MAC’S TEA ROOM

In the 1940s, there were 16 distinct tea rooms in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Today, only one remains: Mary Mac’s Tea Room. Mary Mac’s is still standing some 60+ years later because of its trusted recipes and true southern charm. Guests say there is nowhere else they’d rather eat fried okra, and it is recommended that you ask for Pot Likker on your first visit. What in the devil is Pot Likker? A simple veggie (turnip green) broth, served with “cracklin’ bread.” It sounds simple enough, but folks can’t get enough of it, and if it’s your first time, they give you a cup to try for free! The menu is impressive, with a variety of dishes to satisfy any traveler hoping for authentic soul food. Fill up on the lightly-fried okra, shrimp and cheese grits, deviled eggs, chicken livers, salmon croquettes, spiced apples, and so much more. Mary Mac’s is a local favorite that continues to put smiles on both the tourist and the community faces alike.

Eagle’s Restaurant

Eagle’s Restaurant is quite possibly Birmingham’s bestkept secret. It’s close to downtown, it’s small, and it features cafeteria style lines. On the outside, it doesn’t seem appealing, but once you get in line and order your food, you’ll have a change of heart. The simplicity of the restaurant is what becomes most appealing, and the cafeteria lineup is one that changes all the time, so you’re in for a treat each time you walk through the doors. The family-owned Eagle’s Restaurant is situated nearly next door to the local Farmer’s Market, which supplies all of the restaurant’s produce. Enjoy fresh cabbages and greens, along with all fresh fruits for pies and cobblers. Dinner comes with a choice of meat and two sides, similar to the tea room style, along with a piece of cornbread. Weekly choices include: fried chicken, smothered pork chops, chitterlings, and the famous neck bones with potatoes, which is a must-try item. Sides range from fried corn to stewed okra and tomatoes, and other classics like collard greens, pinto beans, and candied yams. Grab a slice of peach cobbler or a serving of banana pudding for dessert, and your soul food meal will be complete. Eagle’s even serves freshly brewed sweet tea and Kool Aid! Our stomachs are growling! We’re ready to go grab a bite, are you?

Sweet Dough

Pies of St. Landry

A TRADITIONAL SWEET TREAT FOR THE SOUL Sweet dough pies have long been held as a culinary tradition in St. Landry Parish. Inexorably linked to the pâtisseries of France, a connection that permeates both Creole and Cajun, these pies are as much a part of the parish’s identity as zydeco music and seasonings that make any dish taste just right. One of the long-standing practitioners of the art of sweet dough pie making is the Hertzock family of Yam Country Pies located in the Zydeco Capital of the World, Opelousas. Over 50 years of experience colors the made-fromscratch pies that decorate the shelves of this family-owned bakery. “It started in the cafeteria of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church,” says the Hertzock matriarch, Patricia, about the first pie she ever made. “My aunts needed help making some for the congregation, and it just grew from there.” Similar stories were told by her daughter, Lucretia, and son, “Dough Master” Conrad. True comfort food taps into the nostalgia of time spent with family and friends, and the Hertzock family has perfected the soul of this idea in their pies.

But what makes a sweet dough pie different from any other pie? If you ask Patricia, she would just laugh and say, “It’s in the name.” The verbatim way she interprets the question belies her practical nature, but there is still more to be said about the saccharine taste of a sweet dough pie. The melt-in-your-mouth crust, slathered with fillings ranging from the Herzock favorite, sweet potato, to the slight crunch of coconut and all the flavors in between, make for an experience that leaves people coming back for more. “Dough Master” Conrad has his own interpretation of the question.

St. Landry Parish, LA.qxp_Layout 1 3/3/19 12:06 PM Page 2

“The difference is in the tradition,” he explained. As Yam Country Pies’ jack-of-all trades, he is also in charge of acquiring the locally-sourced sweet potatoes for their pies. In the past, sweet potatoes and yams were a large part of the culture of Opelousas. He spoke on the importance of

keeping their recipes old-fashioned, “If we don’t keep the tradition alive, who will?” Yam Country Pies is not the only place in St. Landry Parish where you can find these great tasting pastries. The Kitchen Shop, located in Grand Coteau, Louisiana the

Sweet Dough Pie Capital of the World, lauds their own award-winning, blackberry sweet dough pies. Ray’s Bakery in Eunice also carries an impressive spread of flavors. If that is not enough sweet dough pie for you, there is also a festival dedicated to this iconic treat. Every year, pastry chefs and home cooks vie for first place in the sweet dough pie contest. This year the event will be taking place on October 26 from 9am-3pm at the historic St. Charles Borromeo Church in Grand Coteau. A large variety of pies are available for purchase, including fig, custard, lemon, blackberry, and other local, seasonal ingredients. You can even make your own sweet dough pie by visiting our website at CajunTravel.com. Chef Nancy Brewer of The Kitchen Shop

has detailed one of her own recipes. Before you begin baking, keep in mind, and Patricia asserts this too, the best baking tip is to go to your family and find the recipes important to them. Add your own flair to traditional treats. Anywhere you go for a sweet dough pie, be it the time-honored sweet potato of the family-owned Yam Country Pies or the awardwinning blackberry of The Kitchen Shop, each will be layered with the distinctive years of experience and traditions of the hands that made them. If you want to find out which is your favorite, you will just have to taste them all. Find out more about the Sweet Dough Pie Festival and the bakeries mentioned here at CajunTravel.com. Magnolia State MEET ME IN THE

There are many things we know and love about the Magnolia State, including Vicksburg and the gulf shores, but did you know that Mississippi is the birth place of Kermit the Frog? Puppeteer Jim Henson grew up in the swamplands of Leland, Mississippi, which is now home to a permanent exhibit for the icon and his creator. Born in 1936, Henson spent his childhood like many of us, playing outdoors. His inspiration for Kermit came to him long after, but it was those early days that sparked his beloved dream. When Leland officially recognized itself as the birthplace, there was a celebration in which the town was given three of the original Muppet figures to display: Dr. Teeth, Chester the Rat, and The Swedish Chef. The puppets, of course, had to be given back after the celebration came to an end, but later one, Henson’s wife donated the original Kermit the Frog puppet to the town’s exhibit. Today, you can go visit

the birthplace of this iconic character, view a plaque created in his honor, and even take pictures with the giant stuffed frog himself. Another obscure tourist attraction that is worth a look is Mammy’s Cupboard. Mammy’s is known for being a “politically incorrect” building that still serves up lunch and desserts today. The building itself is a large red brick structure in the shape of a hoop skirt, with a single door in the center of the brick. Atop the brick sits a sculpture of the torso and head of a maid holding a serving tray. The peculiar building was built in 1940, but after the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s, Mammy’s started to get some unwanted attention, so it was decided that her skin tone be lightened (it was originally a very, very dark brown). Now in full “swing” with a gift shop and all, Mammy’s is one piece of history you won’t want to miss.

MISSISSIPPI

IS THE BIRTH PLACE OF KERMIT THE FROG

M

Mississippi is full of many avenues of diversity and a history that runs as deep as the famous river. For those who enjoy that caliber of historical significance, Vicksburg is the place to be. The National Military Park in Vicksburg holds an important place in American history, and is definitely a place everyone should make time for. The National Park Service presents a historical quote about the geographical importance of Vicksburg to turn the Civil War in the Union’s favor: “President Abraham Lincoln told his civilian and military leaders, ‘See what a lot of land these fellows hold, of which Vicksburg is the key! The war can never be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket...We can take all the northern ports of the Confederacy, and they can defy us from Vicksburg.’ Lincoln assured his listeners that ‘I am acquainted with that region and know what I am talking about, and as valuable as New Orleans will be to us, Vicksburg will be more so.’”

try, being that it was settled in the late 1600s. Still, it remains a popular tourist attraction. During the summer months the beaches are frequented, but even in the winter months you’ll see people enjoying a stroll. The white sands of Biloxi Beach are soft and comforting, and the weather is mild.

Because of this knowledge, The Battle of Vicksburg, which is also known as the Siege of Vicksburg, took place to obtain the land and thus divide the south to win the war. The Union soldiers that fought in this battle were led by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, while the Confederate soldiers of the area fought under the command of Gen. John C. Pemberton. Pemberton ultimately surrendered to Grant on July 4, 1863. His soldiers were dying of starvation, and the explosions and attacks were happening more frequently, so Pemberton had little to no choice other than to give up. This is only a tiny morsel of the history that is Vicksburg. Today, the National Military Park in Vicksburg is widely popular, and many visitors enter the park each year to wander the memorials and war houses. Within the park, you’ll be able to see the original guns used during The Battle of Vicksburg, along with walking through the actual fields where the battle took place.

And right here at the Riverwalk, we love to celebrate with special events from races to festivals to concerts. Nope, there’s no need to rush through Columbus—unless, of course, you’re aboard one of the supersonic jet trainers at Columbus Air Force Base, in which case, you might be moving at more than 800 miles per hour!

And as America’s 25th state, Arkansas’ beauty is unmatched! Appropriately nicknamed the Natural State, Arkansas’ landscape is constantly blooming and expanding. Escape the throes of modern living—become one with nature as you vacation in traditional log cabins, or camp outside directly underneath the stars. Hike in the early morning and count just how many whitetailed deer you can spot. The white-tailed deer are Arkansas’ state animal so we expect you’ll see a lot! What better way to take in the outdoors than to go camping? With the help of Buffalo Camping & Canoeing, you can become an expert on the Natural State as you rent a your own canoe and sail down at glistening spring rivers.

“APPROPRIATELY NICKNAMED THE NATURAL STATE, ARKANSAS’ LANDSCAPE IS CONSTANTLY BLOOMING AND EXPANDING.”

But when was the last time you heard about two mountains located in the same region with the exact same name? If you’re anything like us, this is probably your first time, too! When planning to meet up with friends at the base of “Sugar Loaf Mountain”, it’s absolutely crucial that you specify which one. Sugarloaf Mountain in Heber Springs is a popular mountain whose summit overlooks a breathtaking skyline vista in all directions—whereas Sugar Loaf Mountain by Fairfield Bay is actually an island on Greers Ferry Lake.

Rather than taking a boat to Sugar Loaf, we suggest renting a kayak or canoe and paddling your way to this hiking experience for a little extra adventure. But don’t worry about bringing a canoe to hike up Sugarloaf in Heber Springs. The best part? These twin mountains are located directly across from one another, both areas just north of Little Rock. Get the best of both worlds (literally) when you visit Arkansas—explore the Sugar Loaf Mountains in the crisp morning and drive down to the capital city of Little Rock for an afternoon full of shopping and good eats.

Eureka Springs, AR

THE NEW

DOWNHILL DESTINATION

Since the middle of 2018, downhill mountain bike trail designers have been creating some of the most challenging downhill vertical mountain biking trails east of the Rockies. At Lake Leatherwood Park, 5 minutes from downtown Eureka Springs, Arkansas, the new trails have been discovered by an amazing number of professional downhill cyclists from across the entire country and abroad. Seven unique trails, similar to ski slopes, are rated by green dots, blue squares and black diamonds, with one extremely advanced trail rated as a double black diamond, only recommended for the most experienced, professional downhillers. However, there are excellent family trails for the not so adventurous and an abundance of flat trails that cross Leatherwood Park. 35 miles of trails exist today with an expansion of an additional 25 miles planned this year.

One of the most interesting aspects of the riders of all levels is the use of Go-Pro cameras to capture their adventure. From amateurs to pros, some incredible videos of downhill riders have been captured. As the development of an incredibly powerful compliment to adventure tourism, Eureka Springs is also home to additional trails. These include those at the Great Passion Play which are predominately family friendly and make a visit to the Great Passion Play campus a unique experience. The Walton Family Foundation was instrumental in the development of the Lake Leatherwood trails with the purchase of 35 acres donated to the City. Additionally, the Foundation purchased a large tract of land called Marble Flats, on the north side of Eureka Springs, which is being designed as a type of at track experience with jumps and a variety of obstacles to make for a great biking experience. The beauty of the downhill mountain biking in Arkansas, is riders can enjoy trails year around. Arkansas weather is generally mild, even in winter. Trails are open 7-days a week. To assist riders, shuttle services are available to transport riders from the bottom to the top of the mountain daily. As many are 150 riders a day have run the trails since the expansion, but with Leatherwood’s seven downhill trails, there is no waiting. For more information on the trails, visit www.BikeEureka.Com.

But even the most seasoned riders need rest and relaxation. The Biltmore House and Gardens

One of our favorite things about North Carolina has got to be its abundance of beautiful, natural environments. From the great Grandfather Mountain to the subtler gardens that locals care for in their own backyards, the Tarheel State’s wildlife is to die for. Explore the Elijah Mountain Gem Mine in Hendersonville and take home a handful of organic gems and minerals; tour the Biltmore Estate and Gardens in Asheville, a chateau unlike any other mansion in America; or take the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, the official state hiking trail in North Carolina. This trail runs over 1,100 miles, spanning from the Outer Banks of North Carolina inland to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Hike it, bike it, glamp it—choose to experience the evolving landscapes of North Carolina in your own way.

The Tar-Heel State’s motto “First in Flight” is a testament to the legendary Wright brothers, the first humans to take flight and soar across the sky. Located in Kill Devil Hills, the Wright Brothers National Memorial juts out of the ground, pointing high up into the sky. What better way to try connecting with the Wright brothers’ optimism

There are, however, three stunning lakes that call our region home; Lake Hartwell, Lake Keowee, and Lake Jocassee.

Y IN TRAILS VAR “WATERFALL AT TH UT THE AWE DIFFICULTY, B RES IS RFALL INSPI TE A W H C EA THE HIKE..” WELL WORTH Here, the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains plummet a staggering 2,000 feet down to the rolling hills below. The Cherokee Indians called this marvel the Blue Wall, and when you visit, you’ll find out why. Because of the natural wonder that is the steep drop of the Blue Wall, Lake Hartwell Country is home to hundreds of cascading waterfalls. Waterfall trails vary in difficulty, but the awe that each waterfall inspires is well worth the hike. Speaking of hikes, our region is a hiker’s dream. Maybe instead of taking a trail that leads to a waterfall, you’d like to reach the summit of beautiful Table Rock or Pinnacle Mountain. For avid hikers, the Foothills Trail should be on your bucket list. This 76.2 mile trail connects Oconee and Table Rock state parks, crosses the North Carolina state line, and offers an experience that is unmatched by other overnight trails.

Beyond the mountains and waterfalls, Lake Hartwell Country also has ample opportunities to connect to nature through agriculture. The Anderson Ag Trail is a self-guided experience that takes you through an array of agricultural sites from dairy farms, to u-pick destinations, to sunflower fields. The opportunity to meet a goat in person or pick your own dinner will become a memory that you’ll never forget. This is the place that personifies your desire to explore. It brings to life that feeling you just can’t explain, but may best be described as wanderlust. Just one breath of the crisp, mountain air, one step onto a dirt trail, or one glimpse towards the rolling hills will center your soul by seeing something real. There’s just something about it. Come see for yourself.

VIRGINIA

EXPLORING

There is plenty to do and see in Old Dominion. As the site of the first British colony to settle in America, the story of Virginia is a long one. Its ancestral status beckons many historians and tourists alike. Although in ruins, Jamestown has been preserved and made into a learning experience. In what is known as Williamsburg today, you can visit and tour the old settlement of Jamestown to learn about the English’s early days in North America. The Jamestown Settlement is coined as a “living museum” because of its open and realistic design. Explore near exact replicas of the three ships the British arrived in—the Godspeed, the Discovery, and the Susan Constant. View countless memorials, preserved artifacts, and authentic battle armor and weaponry. But living history comes in many forms. For instance, if you hit the great outdoors in Virginia, you just might come across the Natural Bridge of Virginia. This bridge is made completely of limestone rock and reaches up to 215 feet in the air. Its unique bridge-shaped growth pattern actually serves as a functioning bridge, connecting either side of the old US Route 11. Granted park status in 2014, Natural Bridge Park was once crossed by George Washington himself, leaving behind his initials and a survey marker during his expedition of Virginia. With so much happening on the coast, early settlers didn’t give as much thought to the natural world of America as we do. However, Natural Bridge Park barely scratches the surface. Visit Breaks Interstate Park, also known as the “Grand Canyon of the South”, the deepest gorge east of the Mississippi River that shares part of its acreage with Kentucky. Mostly in Virginia, the Breaks Interstate Park is a natural marvel very much like the Natural Bridge. Its undisturbed depth and beauty make way for a remarkable outdoor adventure. Hike Pine Mountain, paddleboard in Laurel Lake, or bike one of the many trails available in the park. No matter which activity you look forward to the most, a trip to Virginia this spring is a surefire way to experience a little bit of everything in the south.

CELEBRATING AMERICA’S HOMETOWN HEROES Honor. Respect. Patriotism. Too often, those words are tossed around—just clichés or campaign slogans. But in the small Virginia mountain town of Marion, these words mean something. Since The Overmountain Men marched to Williamsburg in 1775 to join Patrick Henry in the American Revolutionary War, Marion and surrounding Smyth County has had native sons, and later daughters, serve in our nation’s military. This year, as we commemorate the 75th anniversary of World War II and the 100th of World War I, there will be many programs, parades, celebrations all across the country. But none like you’ll find in Marion, Virginia. Maybe it’s the active members of the local VFW Post 4667. Maybe it’s the family connections to those named on the obelisks and monuments lining the quaint courthouse lawn. Or maybe it’s in the hearts of her citizens who truly keep their promise to the gold star families to “Never Forget”. But for many reasons, US Senator Tim Kaine called Marion “One of the most patriotic towns in America”. It is something to see for yourself. Visit Marion Memorial Day Weekend. You’ll meet VFW

members, volunteers, even the Town Mayor as they pitch in to build a display to honor lost veterans. White crosses, emblazoned with a name and branch of service and topped with a crisp American flag marks yet another soldier, sailor, airman, Marine. The display of over 1,200 markers surround the permanent war memorials on the Smyth County Courthouse Lawn, now stretching to nearby churchyards and the grounds at Town Hall. Day and night, the solemn display draws visitors looking for lost loved ones, thinking of those who’ve given their all for our country. Memorial Day Monday brings a Grand Parade along Main Street, then a community cookout and program at the VFW Post. Flag Day. Rolling Thunder visits. Independence Day. “Spirit of ‘45” Day honoring our surviving WWII vets each August. Patriot Day. Veteran’s Day. Time and time again, this tiny town comes together to remember her heroes, to pay their respects, to show true, unabashed patriotism.

“ HONOR. RESPECT. PATRIOTISM. TOO OFTEN, THOSE WORDS ARE TOSSED AROUND—JUST CLICHÉS OR CAMPAIGN SLOGANS. BUT IN THE SMALL VIRGINIA MOUNTAIN TOWN OF MARION, THESE WORDS MEAN SOMETHING.” 160 | Spring 2019 | Travel South

Come feel the soft breezes that wave those flags, hear the marching band and cheers as the red, white and blue floats ease down Main Street, see the faces reflecting generations of those who serve. Do it in a small town—OUR small town Marion, Virginia. We come together this year to remember, there’s no finer place. Honor. Respect. Patriotism. In “One of America’s Most Patriotic Towns”.
