Scoma’s Sausalito - Sausalito, CA Feast your eyes on the beautiful establishment known as Scoma’s, where you’ll find simple yet creative dishes, breathtaking views of Angel Island, and a chic, Italian ambience.

There’s nothing more satisfying than being greeted by welcoming faces that seat you at a table with unobstructed views of the deep blue pacific waters, and then provide you with a menu that any seasoned foodie would croon over. The experience is why you come here, and the food is why you keep coming back. For starters, order the coconut curry mussels, with mussels from the Mediterranean that are steamed in coconut milk and served in a garlic Thai curry sauce – we’re drooling. For dinner, we recommend trying the Sea Scallops Parmigiano. This dish includes royal sweet scallops that are dusted in Parmigiano cheese and then grilled to perfection with a lemon beurre blanc. But, if you can, try to get your hands on the shellfish sauté for the summer, which is overflowing with crab legs, prawns, clams and scallops. Other seasonal specialties keep the menu fresh and inviting. Visit scomassausalito.com to learn more.

North River Lobster Company New York, NY “Take a cruise on New York’s only floating lobster shack!” You heard right, this is all about eating lobster on a boat. What could be any better? Maybe the fact that this “boat” is a cruise with full bars on three different decks and a full service restaurant that is serving up everything from fresh oysters to various kinds of lobster rolls and more. Yeah, that definitely makes it better. Try an unlimited season pass if you’re local, but if you’re planning a vacation here from far away, one time on this boat is all it’ll take to keep you coming back for more. Schedules are accommodating to all parties, and the summertime is the perfect time to plan. From ice cold beer to fresh sangria, a full raw bar, and tons of menu choices, the North River Lobster Company is not to be missed while in the area. The Boathouse at Sunday Park Midlothian, VA Impeccable views of the Swift Creek Reservoir are not the only reason locals love this place. The food is amazing. They’ve got everything right, from crab cakes to southern shrimp and grits, and people are eating it up every chance they get. The Boathouse is also beautifully designed, and perfect for hosting, so if you need to plan an event soon, consider this as a top venue choice. The talk seems to be about the crab cakes, which apparently has been a years-long project to

working towards completely perfecting the recipe, and wow. Just wow. Order the Boathouse Crab Cakes, which come two to a plate, and are laced with Pommery mustard sauce. The cakes are served with housemade mashed potatoes and a seasonal vegetable – you won’t be disappointed by this menu item. Feeling something unique? Try the Boathouse’s Crab & Asparagus pizza, with plenty of mozzarella to hold the two delicious main ingredients together.

Try the Boathouse’s Crab & Asparagus pizza Golden Mast Okauchee, WI Okcauchee Lake is the beautiful waterfront view you’ll get here at Wisconsin’s Golden Mast lakeside restaurant. From the European architecture down to the exceptional service, and everything in between, this place needs to find its way to the top of your waterfront dining bucket list. Perfect for a romantic dinner or even a wedding, the Golden Mast is known for taking every customer’s breath away. The Golden Mast serves up steaks, seafood, and unique German specialties, sure to please any foodie’s taste. Going for the German specialty? We knew it – try the German Combination, “An experience of select German dishes.” This meal comes as a platter featuring duck, wiener schnitzel, beef rouladen, spaetzle, and red cabbage. We’re full just thinking about it. As an alternative, we recommend the walleye almondine, which comes lightlybaked with toasted almonds and a double-baked sweet potato.

However you like your seafood prepared, or even if you don’t like seafood at all, it is no surprise why these places make the top of the list year after year. Pizza by the water, steaks on a lake, or lobster on a boat – it’s all yours for the taking. Be sure to factor one (or all!) of these delicious destinations into your next foodie vacation: waterfront style.

In Virginia Beach, VA

“With the bountiful Chesapeake Bay to our north and the mighty Atlantic Ocean to our east, seafood is a way of life here.”

Virginia Beach, our culinary scene has been shaped by our surrounding waters. With the bountiful Chesapeake Bay to our north and the mighty Atlantic Ocean to our east, seafood is a way of life here. As the largest natural estuary in the United States, the Chesapeake Bay is home to 348 species of finfish, including flounder, sea bass, tautog and the localfavorite, rockfish. As fun to catch as they are to eat, 70 to 90 percent of the world’s rockfish, also known as striped bass, reside in the waters of the Bay, making Virginia Beach the “Rockfish Capital of the World.” With the Bay producing nearly 500 million pounds of seafood each year, it’s no wonder we can’t get enough.

As the high heat of summer is cooled by the crisp winds of autumn, our hunger for seafood reaches epic proportions. With some of our favorite fish reaching peak season, our local seafood joints are turning out some of the freshest dishes around. The Rudee Inlet, at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, is a hub of unbeatable seafood options in our coastal city. Rudee’s Restaurant and Cabana Bar, Rockafeller’s, and Big Sam’s all overlook the inlet and each offer a unique take on fresh seafood pulled straight from the Chesapeake Bay, like Big Sam’s Hot Blue Crab Dip or Rudee’s Fresh Catch of the Day served-up Chesapeake Style, topped with jumbo lump crabmeat, Smithfield ham, and Bearnaise Sauce. Virginia Beach is also home to the mouthwatering blue crab, a local staple that can’t be topped – except, of course, with a healthy pour of melted butter. Margie & Rays Crabhouse, in the Sandbridge District, makes local blue crab their business - serving out fresh, Chesapeake Bay crab cakes and a she-crab soup that is frequently voted as the best in the region at our Annual She-Crab Soup Festival. As the She-Crab Soup Capital of the World, that’s quite an accomplishment in Virginia Beach! As if the full bounty of the sea and the Bay weren’t enough, there are also our oysters – beautifully harvested Lynnhaven oysters. Once coveted around the world and served to presidents and royalty for their size, saltiness and gentle zing, these delicious little bivalves are being harvested in the Lynnhaven River in Virginia Beach, an offshoot of the Chesapeake Bay. Captain John Smith himself described the bounty of the area when he and his shipmates spent three days in Virginia Beach before moving inland to establish Jamestown in 1607, surviving primarily off fish, oysters and turtles - an experience he described in his logs: “Oysters lay as thick as stones, with the Bay and rivers containing more sturgeon than could be devoured by dog or man.”

Local ostreophage and oyster farmer extraordinaire, Chris Ludford, owner of Pleasure House Oysters and former Virginia Beach firefighter, is cultivating the Lynnhaven oyster and doing his part to bring them back to their days of royalty. The amount of care and attention that each individual oyster gets shines through in its complex and divine flavor profile. From seed to plate, this process takes two years, and Chris is there every step of the way to nurture their growth and to make sure he is producing the best oysters he possibly can. Visitors can hop aboard a tour of Ludford’s farm and even taste the oysters plucked straight from the water in the cooler months when the water is cold enough to ensure safe eating. In the place where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Chesapeake Bay, seafood is king. Plan a trip to Virginia Beach and see for yourself!

Nashville

Tennessee

T

ennessee, known as The Volunteer State, is home to some of the most beautiful land in the country. It is said that the nickname came about during the War of 1812, when volunteer soldiers came from Tennessee to assist troops. Beyond the history of the war, Tennessee actually has a lot of cool places to hang out in, thanks in big part to the musical influence that has grown throughout the land. Tennessee is considered to be the birthplace of several genres of music, so if your love of music is just as great as your love of history, a trip to this state is for you. Start off by visiting places like Memphis and Nashville to get your music fix. Nashville is home to the Country Music Hall of Fame, as well as the Grand Ole Opry, which is widely known as “The Show that Made Country Music Famous.” Keep an eye out for the roots of Rock & Roll, arguably found in Memphis. There are well over 100 iconic names in music that all come from the state and Memphis is one city that showcases a bit of history on them all.

“Tennessee is considered to be the birthplace of several genres of music, so if your love of music is just as great as your love of history, a trip to this state is for you.”

After Stax, head on over to Elvis’s Graceland. Graceland provides an inside look at the life of “The King,” and highlights his accomplishments, family life, and personal aspirations. The estate itself has been dubbed the “most famous Rock & Roll residence” in the nation. Prepare to view a wide variety of assets and memorabilia from the star, including his impressive collection of cars, the family tomb, and a tour of his home and music room. Take a step back in time while you visit one of the city’s many museums, such as the Rock n’ Soul Museum, Stax Museum, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, and the Blues Hall of Fame. The Blues Hall of Fame alone notes more than 400 names that all brought something to the blues industry, whether it be in full albums, nearly-lost singles, or literature itself.

After you’ve listened to your fair share of Rock & Roll, Blues, Soul, and Country hits, check out Dollywood in Pigeon Forge. Dollywood brings in fun for the whole family with the water park and theme park that cater to all ages. Dollywood is a stone’s throw from the Great Smoky Mountains, as well, so the entire area has enough activities to fill an entire season without rest.

The Stax Museum is actually the original site of Stax Records, which went bankrupt and closed up in the mid-1970s. The area, widely known for its soul music, was dubbed Soulsville USA, and that was the nickname Stax Records gave their studio. This, in large part, was to counteract Motown Records, who called themselves Hitsville USA.

For a more unique vacation idea, plan a visit to The Bell Witch Cave. The Bell Witch Cave is located in Adams, Tennessee, and is host to the famous legend of the Bell Witch. The witch was said to be invisible to most, and she is widely known as the sole cause of terror and abuse to the Bell family back in the early 1800s.

In the center of the park, you’ll find the border that separates North Carolina and Tennessee. The park’s area is over 500,000 acres, and is home to a variety of wildlife. The vast differences in elevation throughout the mountain ranges make for great diversity among the park’s inhabitants. Because the park has both a subtropical lowland climate, and old growth forests with steep slopes and cooler temperatures, animal sightings can range from a black bear to a bat, “Take a hike or depending on where you’re go for a bike ride at in the park.

Why she terrorized the Bell family, or even if it were truly her, known one really knows, but to this day, the cave still remains quite a popular attraction. Visitors have reported a variety of strange phenomena within the cave, and reviews call it “the scariest place in Tennessee.” If you simply want to appreciate the land itself, then do not miss the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Raleigh, NC

Death & Taxes is the latest restaurant from chef Ashley Christensen dedicated to the technique of cooking with wood fire.

///////////

Chef Ashley Christensen Ashley Christensen has made quite a name for herself in the industry. From appearing on hit shows, like the Food Network’s popular Iron Chef America and MSNBC’s Your Business, to opening up six separate establishments, Ashley has everyone buzzing about her talents. Ashley received her initial passion for southern fare and quaint diners from her father, who was in love with the comforts of quick-stop hot coffees and plates of corned beef hash.

Ashley was given an Outstanding Chef award from the James Beard Foundation in 2018. She has appeared in a handful of publications, including “Bon Appétit, Gourmet, The New York Times, Southern Living and Garden & Gun.” Her first opening, Poole’s Diner, inspired her first cookbook as well, titled, “Poole’s: Recipes and Stories from a Modern Diner,” which was released in September of 2016. Her restaurants include: Poole’s, Beasley’s Chicken & Honey, Death & Taxes, Bridge Club, Fox Liquor Bar, and Chuck’s. Poole’s is the diner that started it all, where the handwritten menu is located on the wall via chalkboard. Poole’s used to be an old pie

shop from the 40s that also became a luncheonette. Ashley stayed true to the former owner’s space, and Poole’s rebirth came in 2007 With an impressive collection of restaurants in the Raleigh area, it’s no wonder she’s been dubbed the culinary queen of the town. Chef Ashley promises to use only the freshest, seasonal ingredients, and prides herself on plating the very best for her hungry customers. Her equalitarian attitude and gastronomical wanderlust outlook makes her both interesting and inviting. Sit down to a meal in one of her award-winning restaurants, and see for yourself! /////////// Chef Charles Draghi Chef Charles Draghi and his restaurant, Erbaluce, are centered in the Bay Village area of Boston, Massachusetts. Chef Draghi has been rooted in Boston for many years, and is very well-known for putting a modern, herb-infused spin on traditional Italian cuisine. Draghi hones in on Piemontese flavors, and pairs freshly grown herbs and spices with seasonal, high-quality ingredients for a savory combination that never ceases to amaze his customers.

Contemporary, yet comforting, his dishes offer up both intellectual criticisms and heartwarming feelgood meals alike. In an interview with Haute Living, Draghi explains one of his signature dishes: The roasted rack of wild boar with a handful of wild Concord grapes, fermented with lavender branches. A favorite for the past 12 years and standing, Draghi says that the secret is that the meat comes from a feral animal, rather than a farm-raised boar. The “steak-like texture is very satisfying, and subtly haunting; a primal flavor that is unlike any other meat.” Draghi’s restaurant, Erbaluce, has received many awards and nominations, including its 6th “Best Italian Restaurant” from Improper Bostonian Magazine. A quote from Robert Nadeau explains the very core of what makes Draghi’s cuisine so unique: “Draghi’s food builds sauces from vegetables and their essences, rather than butter, olive oil, or cream. So even with a rich dessert, one will be able to continue with a night out on the town after eating here. Amid many fine restaurants near the Theater District, this is one of the most distinctive.” – Robert Nadeau, The Boston Phoenix

The menu changes nightly at Erbaluce, depending on what Chef Draghi feels like playing with, and what’s in season. Dining at Erbaluce means ordering razor clams with fennel, garlic, and green peppercorns one night, and then trying braised sunflowers with herbed ricotta and a raisin-caper vinaigrette the next. The point of every dish is to taste the freshness of each ingredient, without having to bridge the gaps in a rich, heavy sauce. His classical French culinary training, paired with his gastro-chemistry influence, makes Chef Draghi a sight for sore eyes among the inventive and novice foodie community. &Spirits • Top Tours of The summer • Take a ride in a vintage Volkswagen van while you tour the coast of California in search of microbreweries and the central coast winery scene. Or, head to Tennessee, where you’ll be greeted with down-home friendly faces that welcome you to take a sip of their homemade moonshine if you dare. Whatever your wine, beer, or spirits fancy may be, these top tours of the summer are about to show you why they keep sitting in the number one slots as rated by satisfied customers from across the country. Put your drinking glasses on, it’s time to get sipping!

They make you feel as though it is your van and you’re just with a group of friends cruising along Highway 1. It is a delightful change of pace compared to most tours, especially if you’ve taken a few already! But what’s on the tour agenda? Vantigo will take you on storied tours of the city or a Paso Robles coastal wine and beer tour. Vantigo offers historical tours as well, such as an Alcatraz tour, but we’re here for the ones that include beer and wine! Start with the San Francisco Bew Tour at $99 per person, which will offer stops at five or six different breweries where you’ll get tastings of course, all while learning about the evolution of breweries in the area, along with how things are run today. The Paso Robles Private Brew Tour is perfect for larger groups at $999 per van (which can hold up to 14 people). You’ll get a coastal beer tasting option or be able to mix it up how you please. There are points of interest listed, but if you want to customize your tour to hit other locations, you’re more than welcome to. There’s also a Paso Robles Wine Tour at $55 per person, which lasts about 4 hours in duration and covers 3-5 winery partners. Enjoy California’s central coast in style as you cruise along in a vintage 1951 Ford Mini-bus. This tour also caters to its riders, so if your group just wants to buy a bottle of wine and hang out for a bit at the last stop, you can do so! It is all about getting that authentic, local experience, rather than feeling like you’re on a strict museum-like time schedule. Each tour also comes with a Vantigo souvenir! Go to www.vantigo.com and check out all the different options. You’ll be booking a tour here in no time.

Vantigo’s name says it all. The company combined the Spanish terms “van” and “contigo” to provide a play on words, meaning “to go with you,” only literally in vans. Each tour is taken in a classic and fully-restored van, with the core fleet including the iconic VW vans that we all love! These unconventional tours are brought to you by fun and enthusiastic local guides, who will show you the Bay Area from a familiar set of eyes. This allows visitors to experience San Francisco without having to look touristy. The fun part of having these guides bring you along for the ride is that they’ll share their own stories with you and make conversation, much different from the history-like tours that most tourists are used to.

Columbia County, NY

Nestled between the banks of the Hudson River and the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains lies one of the gems of the Hudson Valley—Columbia County, NY. Long before Henry Hudson sailed up the river that bears his name, the county was home to Native American Mohicans. Hudson’s discovery led to the Dutch settling in Hudson and Stuyvesant; the Palatine Germans in Germantown, and the English, the Scots, and New England Whalers near Spencertown and Ancram. The county’s history is culturally rich and historically diverse. Over 50 heritage sites steeped in Revolutionary and Civil War history and homesteads of political luminaries such as the 8th President of the United States, Martin Van Buren and signer of the Declaration of Independence, Robert Livingston, make Columbia County an attraction for heritage visitors. Nineteenth century fine artists, Thomas Cole and Fredric Church, established what is known as the Hudson River School of painting, capturing the breathtaking beauty and vast vistas within the county and beyond. Their homesteads, Church’s Moorish inspired masterpiece, Olana, and the Thomas Cole House are both open to the public and are popular tourist sites.

Family farms have long been supplying meat, produce, fruit, and dairy products to the New York City market. Farm-to-table is not just a catch phrase here. It is a way of life.

The city of Hudson has enjoyed a robust renaissance as a small city with big city flair. In the early 90’s, antique dealers fleeing high rents in New York City came and pioneered the change that has made it the vibrant, eclectic, entrepreneurial place it is today. Art dealers followed as did the unique boutiques that add to the city’s charm. With so much fertile farmland within the county, it was only natural that the farm-to-table movement would put Columbia County on the map as a food and beverage resource.

The past 10 years has seen a boom in dining options. Chefs and restauranteurs migrated from the New York City area lured by abundance of locallysourced, quality products. Zagat-rated establishments fill the county and make it a “foodie’s delight” destination. Whether it be a casual café, vintage diner, fine dining restaurant or hip and happening spot to enjoy a custom IPA or craft cocktail, there is something to tantalize every taste bud. Artisanal beverage producers also hand-craft beer, wine, spirits and hard ciders from locally grown hops, wheat, grapes, and apples. Tasting events along the beverage trail offer an educational and delicious activity to be enjoyed throughout the year. History, art, food and fun make Columbia County the perfect getaway. BLAZING A NEW TRAIL

Visitors coming to Central Pennsylvania this year will have the opportunity to experience a different kind of trail, one not found in the forest. The River Rat Brew Trail is the region’s first and only craft beer trail, and encompasses 14 local breweries across five counties: Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, and Union. The trail’s name pays homage to the people who live along the mighty Susquehanna River and to their ancestors whose lives depended upon the river and its resources. In addition to finely handcrafted brews, the River Rat Brew Trail provides travelers with a beautiful journey through Pennsylvania’s heartland, full of rolling hills, fields, farms,

forests, and the Susquehanna River. Each brewery on the trail produces their own varieties of craft beer and provides a memorable atmosphere to savor exquisite draft selections. Participants are invited to “Join the Rats” and begin the trail at whichever establishment they desire. Some of the more unique brew flavors to find on the trail include peanut butter, coconut, peach rings, cookie dough, and blood orange, along with many more traditional favorites. Many of the trail breweries are located in historic buildings, and most all boast fascinating stories about the paths that led them to produce quality craft beers.

For more information about the River Rat Brew Trail and participating breweries, please visit www.riverratbrewtrail.com or like the trail on Facebook: www.Facebook.com/riverratbrewtrail. Your next weekend adventure is calling, so hit the trail, grab a brew, and join the rats! Visitors looking to spend more time in the region sampling great beverages should also plan to visit the nine wineries in Columbia & Montour counties. The wine trail also hosts seasonal events with special pairings and great prize giveaways. For more information about the Columbia & Montour County wineries, please visit: www.itourcolumbiamontour.com/wineries.

Situated in the middle of Oregon’s lush Willamette Valley, Albany has curated its historical roots and blended them with culinary and “spirited” magic. Arriving at the city’s revitalized historic downtown, it’s immediately apparent that the wine, beer and spirits industry is flourishing. Perfect Vines The Willamette Valley was recognized by Wine Enthusiast Magazine as the “2016 Number One Wine Region of the Year” —winning the coveted title away from vintners across the globe. Located mere minutes from Albany’s downtown core, Springhill Cellars Winery is nestled into rustic countryside—the perfect spot to sip Pinot Noir and other varietals from their vineyard, aged in the French barrel method.

The scenic Willamette River flows through the heart of Albany, setting the stage for downtown shopping, artisanal breweries, and culinary accompaniment. Take a summer’s evening stroll along the river, then head over to Sweet Red for their artistic charcuterie, Oregon wines, cocktails and desserts. At Sybaris Bistro, Chef Matt Bennet pairs regional wines with farm-fresh cuisine and a monthly seasonal menu. For a spectacular view that can’t be beat, take a short drive to Mark’s Ridge Winery in nearby Lebanon. Perched atop a foothill, its tasting room is a virtual eagle’s nest—the highest elevation winery in the Willamette Valley. Tap Rooms and Breweries Downtown Albany is a beer aficionado’s destination. Try No Rails Ale House, Three Sheets Brewing & Tap Room, Growler Garage & Tap House, Calapooia

Brewing Co., Deluxe Brewing Company, or a bit outside downtown, Vagabond Brewing Outpost. Cocktails and Spirits Feeling “cosmopolitan?” Cheer the evening on at one of Albany’s regional distilleries or cocktail bars. Toast to friendship at Vault 244—located inside a historic bank building downtown, the Vault serves up cocktail sophistication and tapas at their finest. Take a brief jaunt over the river for the lively atmosphere at Frankie’s in North Albany. A fun casual bar and outdoor patio serve notable foodie delights like their mountainhigh shareable pork belly fries or freshly harvested (from the chef’s own garden) salad greens and wild caught salmon. Frankie’s premium cocktails and Oregon wines compliment their full restaurant menu.

When the day calls for sampling spirits, take a countryside trip to Nectar Creek in Philomath and sip mead made from the honey of local bees. Spiritopia Liqueurs in neighboring Corvallis produces award winning ginger liqueur. While in Corvallis, check out the new cucumber gin, whiskeys, rum, and vodka at 4 Spirits Distillery. And right alongside Albany’s Deluxe Brewing Co., Sinister Distilling Company produces whiskeys, brandy, and gin.

Romantic Gulf-Front

Nestled on the west end of Crystal Beach in Destin, Florida lies a gorgeous adults-only, gulf-front, luxury boutique hotel. With only 36 exquisitely decorated rooms and suites, bordering a 208-acre state preserve with 1.3 miles of unobstructed beach, and home to one of the most famous restaurants in town, this is no ordinary Inn. We were lucky to find this hidden gem as a friend had recently stayed at the Inn and highly recommended it for my husband and I for a muchneeded romantic getaway! As you turn down the drive to enter the Henderson Park Inn, you’ll immediately notice that this resort property is unique when you see the wood shake exterior more commonly found in places such as Martha’s Vineyard. Immediately immersed in romantic beach ambience, the stunning views engulf your sight and you are mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty of all that is the Gulf of Mexico. Upon entering the Inn, you are greeted by the warm woods and elegant décor of the foyer and friendly staff who offer you a guided look into all that awaits. As you break your gaze to get a better grasp on your surroundings, the concierge indulges you in all the options for your stay, including a complimentary Chef’s breakfast, gourmet boxed picnic lunch, and happy hour at the Tiki Bar. As you open the door to your guestroom, the views are spectacular and the suite evokes feelings of romance, serenity and relaxation. In your own private sanctuary, you’ll encounter soft romantic music and special amenities including wine, grapes and flowers, making a getaway quite a treat. But there’s more -- from 11 to 2 p.m., the Beach Walk Café offers complimentary cookies, lemonade, and homemade soups for all guests to

enjoy. Helpful hint, right before you walk into the restaurant, take a left down the hallway. There you will find a plethora of games, candies, and drinks for guests to enjoy at all times. As an avid dominos player, I spent the happy hour with a lovely glass of wine, enjoying the gulf views, and the look on my husband’s face as I consistently beat him in the game. He was able to wash down his losses with a cold beer and cookie to ease the pain! Between the happiest of hours and our much-awaited dinner, we decided to make use of the endless amenities that the Henderson Park Inn has to offer. Complimentary bikes, gorgeous walks on the beach with courtesy chairs to sit and enjoy the view, cozying up by the fire pit, and access to the Inn’s sister property, The Henderson Resort & Spa’s pool and gym, were on the schedule and we couldn’t wait to do it all. Beginning at 5 p.m. daily, the Beach Walk Café opens for dinner. As the only beachfront fine dining restaurant in Destin, there was no shortage of excitement for the food that awaited. As many would imagine, a surplus of fresh seafood graced the menu, along with finely cut steaks, succulent sides, and bountiful desserts. Items such as Berkshire Pork Loin and the Delmonico ribeye dish are great for any landlover, whereas the Grouper Vince and Shrimp & Grits are guaranteed to fill your seafood craving. Soaking up all the activities and meals that we indulged in, my husband and I left the Henderson Park Inn recharged, revamped, and relaxed and can highly recommend the Inn for a honeymoon, anniversary, or any special vacation with your sweetheart. You can visit their website at www.hendersonparkinn.com to find out more about this enchanting and romantic boutique hotel.

Eats College Towns The Best of American BBQ Farm-to-Table Favorites

If you’re in search for a dive with great bar food and a lively atmosphere, a BBQ joint in western Montana that serves up southern classics, or a farm-to-table experience with local farmers and artisans, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve got all that and more in this edition of Good Eats!

e g e l l o C Towns

Missoula, Montana University of Montana Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the natural landscapes that Montana offers, all in the beautiful college town of Missoula, where the University of Montana proudly stands. The university itself is Missoula’s largest employer, and the community thrives off of its economic health. Along with the landscapes and the economic security, the college life here is vibrant, fun, and engaging. Missoula has been ranked as a top college town for all the right reasons, but we’re mainly here for the food and drinks! All the locals and the college students love to hang out at Charlie B’s, also known as Charlie’s Bar or simply Charlie’s. People here can be seen slamming back a nice shot of whiskey, or sipping on a local craft brew. The Bar is also connected to the beloved Dinosaur Café, which is famous for serving up Cajun cuisine, despite their Montana location. Regulars will tell anyone that the food is quite good, and fresh to boot! Charlie B’s and the Dinosaur Café are inexpensive, quaint, casual, and locally-loved. This relaxed atmosphere is where everyone comes to grab a good bite to eat or a drink with friends, and Charlie B’s has actually been named in the media several times, including Esquire’s “15 Bars You Should Drink in Before You Die.” For an exceptional meal on a special occasion, or just when you feel like leaving the bar scene, head to the Red Bird restaurant on North Higgins. The Red Bird has an elegant and inviting atmosphere, dripping with gold accents and warm undertones of red and chocolate brown. The ambience is regal and the food is to die for! All of the Red Bird’s produce is as fresh as it gets, and the meats are locally-sourced and butchered in house, so each meal comes to your table with the most intense flavor combinations to suit your palate. Our suggestion? Try a market-priced cut of Montana raised lamb, served with wild rice pilaf and slow-cooked green beans.

ITHACA COMMONS

Ithaca, New York Cornell University & Ithaca College Ithaca is a magical foodie town that just so happens to be home to two colleges, Cornell University and Ithaca College – at least that’s the way we see it. When school is in session, the town’s population nearly doubles, and students make up the majority of the people in Ithaca. This however, should not be a deterrent, because Ithaca is more focused on remaining a foodie town than a party haven. The hometown bar scene and the music-driven atmosphere is more what Ithaca is about. Concerts, festivals, and street theaters make for fun things to do while you’re out and about. As for the food, Ithaca is home to Taste of Thai Express restaurant, which is certainly buzzworthy as the top restaurant to visit for the booming Thai cuisine industry within the area. Taste of Thai Express caters to students and the youth, making reservations for graduating parties a breeze and ordering online a cinch, but it also caters to all the locals who are just as in love with the place as everyone else is. Taste of Thai Express is extremely authentic and traditional in its menu, offering up cultural classics like Pad Thai, which is a stir-fried noodle dish in a tamarind sauce, served with tofu Kan, eggs, bean sprouts, crushed peanuts, chives, and lime wedges. If you like spice, try the Panang Curry, which is a creamy spiced red curry sauce infused with Thai herbs and served over sliced cabbage with your choice of meat. The seasonal Italian-based menu at Mercato Bar & Kitchen keeps everyone in town coming back. Mercato is chef-owned and provides beautiful menu items, along with speciallycrafted cocktails to quench your thirst. The restaurant is located on Ithaca’s “Restaurant Row,” which should also tell you how much of a foodie town this city is. Dinner at Mercato is served from 5:30pm-10pm, and includes choices such as Paccheri with white Bolognese, asparagus, ricotta, & goat cheese Mezzelune, or pan-seared Day Boat scallops. Delish!

Skylight Inn BBQ Ayden, North Carolina In the summer of 1947, Pete Jones opened up his BBQ joint at just 17 years old, and little did he know that the Skylight Inn would become a legendary name in North Carolina BBQ. Featured in countless television programs and publications around the country, the Skylight Inn is known for cooking whole hogs over wood, along with many other delicious recipes. Pete Jones passed away in 2006, but his son, nephew, and grandson still run the place and keep the famous tradition going. You can expect to find menu items here such as whole hog trays, which are classic items that have been served the simple way for years. Each tray comes in your choice of size (small, medium, large, or sandwich style) and is served with fresh, housemade slaw and cornbread. Pit-cooked chicken trays are also available, and even a combo tray with the hog and chicken combined. For dessert, grab a slice of three-layer chocolate cake or three-layer pineapple cake. The minimalistic menu allows the chefs to do what they do best, and that’s BBQ. Visit the Skylight Inn’s website (skylightinnbbq.com) for more information. There’s even an online store where you can purchase the awardwinning BBQ sauce they use, along with T-shirts and hats.

Bad Betty’s Barbecue Helena, Montana Deep in the heart of western Montana lies the beautiful town of Helena. Within Helena’s boundaries is an unexpected gem only known as Bad Betty’s Barbecue. Bad Betty’s is a refreshing change of pace and completely unique in its setting. Good BBQ is presumably something only found in the southern region, and Bad Betty’s could be seen as out-of-place for just how good this BBQ is. Nevertheless, the restaurant prides itself on being able to bring authentic southern BBQ to the west. Bad Betty’s has won countless cook-offs and awards just to prove that they’re that good, but it’ll only take you one bite before you completely agree – the proof is in the plate. As they say, “Bad Betty’s Barbecue is just good BBQ, no bull.”

Enjoy a down-home feeling within the atmosphere as you listen to old familiar tunes that give a bluesy-country vibe to the place. Everything is welcoming, from the faces that greet you, to the ambience while you enjoy your meal. The menu is a delightful mix of new and old. You’ll find favorites such as the combination platter, which comes with half a pound of pulled pork and brisket piled on white bread, Bad Betty’s original BBQ sauce, and a choice of two sides. You can add on to this monster of a plate believe it or not, and the add-ons include two ribs or a chicken quarter. Side choices include wicked beans, jalapeno cheddar cornbread, sinful slaw, bleu mac and cheese, country potato salad, or kettle chips. Grab something unique if you’re up for it: Redneck Tacos or a Barbecue Parfait. The Redneck Tacos come with your choice of brisket or pulled pork that is served over cornbread and topped with slaw and sauce. The Barbecue Parfait is a must-try, and is served in a 16oz cup that is layered with the wicked beans, slaw, pulled pork and a spicy pickle spear. Victoria, TX

Mumphord’s Place is another BBQ trail favorite. Already named one of Texas Monthly’s “50 Best BBQ Joints,” The Mumphord brothers cook the “old-fashioned way” using direct heat with mesquite and oak, giving it a milder smoke flavor. The brisket and sausage are some of the best, but for a special treat stop by on Pork Chop Wednesday. Another top barbecue spot is Limon’s BBQ. Cooked slowly on rotisserie pits, Limon’s meat is smoked with a mix of mesquite, oak, and pecan woods. The flavors really come through in their brisket and pork babyback ribs. Although Limon’s is known for their German potato salad, the menu has a Texas flare with Spanish rice and pinto beans. explore

Farm

-to-table favorites

The Whiskey Jar Charlottesville, Virginia The Whiskey Jar restaurant is a local hotspot that boasts locally-grown ingredients that are prepared by hand in order to provide you with the freshest farm-to-table style meal you’ll ever have. Self-deemed as “nothing fancy,” The Whiskey Jar is all about good, casual food. Will Richey is the cook and farmer behind The Whiskey Jar, and he’ll be more than happy to share the stories behind each ingredient. You get

to learn where each item comes from, how it’s grown, what it means to the people that live off of its use, and so much more. So, when you finally sit down for a delicious plate of food, somehow you respect it, admire it, and cherish it a bit more before you let your fork dig in. Chef Richey will feature seasonal items in the menu, which allows for maximum freshness

and full-flavor ingredients. The meats are local as well, and most of it is organic and handselected. Richey says, “Whatever I prepare, it will be entirely made of scratch and served to you at a reasonable price.” The Whiskey Jar is also friendly to those of us who are midnight snackers, with a late night menu each week until 12am or 2am, depending on the day.

Tempura asparagus with smoked tomato and Hubbard’s Virginia Peanut dipping sauce. Hush puppies and sweet potato biscuits with sorghum and apple butter. Altson’s BBQ mac and cheese made with Timbercreek Farm hickory smoked pork. All of these appetizers at only $9 each?! We think that’s more than reasonable. The real love here comes from a special entrée that everyone speaks highly of: Fried Chicken and Collard Greens. The dish is served with your choice of sauce and a side. Sides include slaw, mac and cheese, cornbread, French fries, grits, ham biscuits, creamed spinach – the list goes on and on. Are you sensing a trend? Yes, The Whiskey Jar is bringing soul food and BBQ to the table, literally straight from the farm. It doesn’t get any better than that, folks. Go to thewhiskeyjarcville.com for event reservations, seasonal menu items, and more.

Farm Spirit Portland, Oregon “Farm Spirit celebrates the intersection of craft: foragers, farmers, cooks, potters, winemakers, and brewers with guests at the fourteen-seat Chef’s Counter.” The atmosphere is earth-toned, homey, and inviting as you get to browse handmade works of pottery, wooden spoons, and other artisan wares that Farm Spirit showcases. All of their ingredients are true farm-to-table items, being that they are all found within 100 miles of the restaurant.

THE WHISKEY JAR

Sit down at the counter and have a glass of local wine poured for yourself as you watch and engage with the cooks that tell stories while they plate your plant-based meal. The idea behind Farm Spirit is that each ingredient should be highlighted and emphasized, both on the plate and off. They’ll tell you about their close friendships with the farmer who grew your greens, or the potter that made the bowl they’re served in. Whatever you order, you’re sure to get a delightfully interesting backstory on it. Farm Spirit has dubbed its cooking style as Cascadian, for the surrounding area. They offer a prix fixe menu that is comprised of rotating and seasonal small plates entirely made up of plants. The beauty and plating of each dish is really what makes this place more of an experience than a restaurant. You come for the food, yes, but what you walk away with is a deep appreciation for the land and a greater understanding of what really goes into each plate.

PARADISE SHOAL BAY EAST – ANGUILLA Anguilla is a small British overseas territory in the West Indies. Here, soft, pure white sands feel like fine sugar between your toes. The bright blue waters make this place a true paradise, and the small feel of the island puts relaxation and a calm way of living at the forefront of anyone’s agenda that vacations or lives here. Anguilla is also nearly tax-free, which makes the area a haven for locals.

Shoal Bay East is one of the 36 beaches located in Anguilla, and our personal favorite. The views here are simply priceless; it’s as if you’ve stepped into a postcard. If you’re looking for the tropical escape with the most wow factor, Shoal Bay East is where you’ll find it. Summer is a beautiful season for visiting, where the waters will be warm enough to swim and snorkel. There are also plenty of shopping and dining attractions here, and you’ll often stroll the walkways and shorelines

while hearing the sounds of reggae music and laughter flirt with each other. Grab fresh seafood for dinner right on the water, and opt to stay in a quaint studio suite with an unbeatable view. Whether you want to stay in the country venture out into the Caribbean, these tropical escapes are breathtaking, heart-stealing options. Be sure to look up the deals when planning your trip, as many resorts will offer seasonal specialty rates. Happy sunbathing!

✓ Don’t Fold Your Clothes Of course, don’t go wrinkly and iron-free – that’s not a good look for anyone. Instead, roll your clothes! Most suitcases are built with softer edges and packing straps that can’t be as easily utilized when clothes are folded. Rolling your clothes instead will help ensure that you are getting the most out of your packing space, and reducing wrinkles! By rolling your clothes, you’ll be able to fit twice as much in your suitcase than you would if you folded, and for those longer trips, that can be a lifesaver.

✓ Check Airline Baggage Rules The last thing you want to do is arrive at the airport without knowing that extra bag you brought is going to cost you an arm and a leg to haul across the country. If you had known beforehand, you would have simply packed less, right? Airline baggage rules change, so be sure to research every single time you fly. Checking out the deals is a good idea, too. Because, let’s face it, if we can find a ticket than includes a free checked bag, aren’t we all happy? ✓ Make a List, and Check it Several Times Make a packing list of all the items you want to bring with you on your trip, and run through it a few times to make sure you have everything. This is a really helpful strategy, especially for last-minute vacations or business trips that happen pretty quickly. Keep an essentials list on hand or saved on your phone or computer, and pull it up every time you pull out your luggage. Once you double and triple check your list, you’ll feel confident in leaving home without worrying that you’ve forgotten something important, like your toothbrush! ✓ Copy Important Documents It is essential that you keep all of your important documents, such as your passport and birth certificate (if you’re leaving the country) on you at all times. The best thing to do is make a copy of all your documents, and check the copied versions in your luggage. That way, if you lose a piece of important information, you’ll have a copy to fall back on. This tip reverses, too: if the airlines lose your luggage, you’ll have your originals on your person, which saves you hassle and time spent panicking. The last thing you want is to lose your only copy, which could leave you stranded without that paperwork, and we don’t even want to think about that scenario. ✓ Don’t Bring Your Bathroom with You Of course we want you to smell and look nice on your trip, so don’t skip the deodorant, but don’t over-pack your toiletry bag, either. Instead of taking your chances in the airport with the clear baggies and the measured ounces, it is best just to check any liquid items you need to bring along, such as perfume bottles and shampoos.

packing tip

/////

If you can, buy smaller travel-sized items and pack just enough to last during the duration of your trip. If you have to go out and buy another mini bottle of body wash, that is much better than bringing along your full-sized bottle only to have it leak all over the place.

hen it comes to lodges and resorts, there are many to choose from in the PENNSYLVANIA area. If you’re ever near Bradford, make your way to The Lodge at Glendorn. Established in 1929, the lodge is known for its impeccable hospitality and unmatchable amenities. Glendorn has won many awards, including

Travel + Leisure’s 2016 World’s Best Award for “Number One Resort Hotel in the Continental U.S.” The lodge itself is more like a private campground, with individual cabins for guests. There is the Big House, which has convenient hotel rooms and suites that most of us are used to, but if you can get your hands on a private cabin, you won’t regret it. Try the Miller Cabin, which is the most historic cabin on the grounds, and is quaint, accommodating up to three guests. Built around 1927, the log-andplank cabin has a screened in porch with the original hickory furniture for relaxing. Enjoy an authentic wood-burning fireplace in the living room, and a bedroom fit for a king, which has a fireplace all its own. There are plenty of seasonal events that take place at Glendorn throughout the year. Some events may have an extra charge, while others are completely free to the guests staying during that time. In the summer, look forward to enjoying activities like fly-fishing, hiking, biking, and paddle boarding. Looking for a bit of a different pace? Head to CONNECTICUT to one of the top-rated casino resorts in the northeast! The Mohegan Sun resort, located in Uncasville, has three different casinos to choose from. The Casino of the Sky, the Casino of

the Earth, and the Casino of the Wind are all excellent establishments that offer 5,000 slot machines combined, as well as 200+ game tables and two smoke-free areas. Sunrise Square is a favorite area within the resort, which is an Asian-inspired market that provides traditional games for the table, like Pai Gow Poker and Sic Bo, also known as hi-lo, which is a game of chance played with three dice. Up for a round of golf? Try out the new 18hole course, which offers challenging angles. You’ll be able to

The Mohegan frequently hosts concerts, live comedy specials, and more throughout the year. There is so much to do within the resort that it can be hard to adequately plan. Make sure you research upcoming events when booking your stay. Dance the night away, or enjoy dinner and a show at the theater, and don’t forget to save time to play some games, of course!

For the food lover, WISCONSIN is one of the best states to visit. Check out the beloved city of Madison for some amazing eateries. In recent years, Madison has been in the news when it comes to chef-owned restaurants, farm-to-table experiences, and the craft beer scene. Head to The Coopers Tavern for great beer and unique dishes. Located on Mifflin Street, Coopers has been churning out the best combination of great food, good beer, and an awesome atmosphere for less than a decade. While Coopers isn’t an old-time establishment, it is certainly one of the local favorites by far. Coopers boasts nearly 30 craft beers and more than 120 different bottles, from the popular domestics, to specialty imports from across the world. Looking for a solid whiskey to swish around? Coopers also has more than 120 different whiskeys, bourbons, and scotches to try. For any local in love with the game of soccer, this is the tavern to come to. Coopers is all about soccer, and of course, good game food to pair with it. Try Cooper’s Curds, which are local Wisconsin cheese curds, dipped in a Pabst Blue Ribbon batter, and served up gold brown with a house-made ranch dressing. Coopers is known for its rustic vibe as well, so menu items also include poutine, or bone marrow, which is split and seasoned with parsley and shallots. Wisconsin can get cold, so Coopers is a great place to go to get warm, as well. There’s nothing better than having a steaming bowl of cheesy mac set in front of you to warm your hands on and gobble down. Try Cooper’s spin on the comfort food classic, which sets the mood with a Dubliner cheddar mac, topped with house-cured Fox Heritage Farms pork belly and herb-seasoned breadcrumbs. It’s a delicious combination that is sure to please any mac & cheese fan!

Chicago, ILLINOIS is one of the biggest cities in the United States and perhaps the most popular tourist area in the state of Illinois. Chicago is famous for its food, cityscapes, and architecture, but there are also tons of theaters, shopping districts, and museums to fall in love with. During various restaurant weeks, you can sample different creations from participating restaurants that will range in status, from authentic “mom and pop” shops and street BBQ, to five star fine-dining cuisine, so be sure to research when these are happening. If you like art, head to the Navy Pier for public sculpture displays, and visit the famous “bean” Cloud Gate! Walk through the nearby downtown streets where you will find all sorts of shops to browse for souvenirs, from famous designer brands to local boutiques. Garrett’s has been popping out their Chicago tradition since 1949, and they offer flavors and mixes like Garrett’s mix, a combination of caramel corn and cheddar cheese popcorn. Wausau-Marathon County

For the World’s Best Ginseng,

Head to Wisconsin

“THE SECOND ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL WISCONSIN GINSENG FESTIVAL TAKES PLACE SEPTEMBER 14-16, 2018”

The Chinese have had 5,000 years to perfect ginseng, the root known today as an edible and rejuvenating herb. But just a century ago, a town in North Central Wisconsin quietly developed the gold standard, drawing the respect of discerning connoisseurs from China and around the world. Welcome to Marathon County, where the second annual International Wisconsin Ginseng Festival takes place September 14-16, 2018. The three-day celebration will be held at downtown Wausau’s 400 Block city square park, promising bold flavors in myriad executions, exciting arts and entertainment, and plenty of ginseng-fueled activities. While Wisconsin is best known as the nation’s largest cheese supplier, relatively few know the state produces 95 percent of the U.S. ginseng supply. Arguably more surprising – over 85 percent of the local crop is exported to Asia. Yes, the Chinese have an insatiable appetite for ginseng grown in America’s Dairyland. To understand how a rural Midwest town became the nation’s ginseng epicenter, look back to the turn of the twentieth century. A local group of brothers, the Fromms, took interest in farming the wild ginseng that grew in a nearby forest. Marathon County’s long, cold winters and glacially enriched soil deliver the optimal environment for growing the prized root. In a few years, the brothers turned their crop into a business. Their commercial success spawned an industry and helped employ local farmers during the depression, which saved this area. Thousands of ginseng purists and those merely curious will converge from around the globe to enjoy the culmination of summer in Wausau and discover all this herb can be. Ginseng is believed to boost energy, lower blood sugar and cholesterol, ease stress and even enhance men’s libido.

Festival goers will be treated to ginsengenhanced delights from ice cream to burgers, soda to locally brewed beer and wine and, given the state’s betterknown reputation, cheese curds. Vendors will show off its herbal virtues in capsule form, lotions, lip balms and other creative expressions.

The culinarily inclined can expand their repertoire at ginseng cooking demonstrations. The festival also focuses on local ginseng growers and local farm-to-table fare, with some fascinating historic tours planned. Events will extend onto nearby streets and throughout the county. The International Wisconsin Ginseng Festival is a community collaboration in partnership with area businesses and organizations including Baumann Ginseng Farm, Hsu’s Ginseng Enterprises, Ginseng Board of Wisconsin, Ginseng & Herb Co-Op, Travel Wisconsin, Marathon County, Wausau/Central Wisconsin Convention & Visitors Bureau, as well as many local associations and businesses.

Turns out, that’s also the name of the local school mascot and an identifier embroidered on vintage hoodies. Elkhart Lake Resorters. Now, as for defining resorter, certainly a love of the historic white clapboard resorts, the crystal-clear lake and the quaint downtown shops plays into it, as does walkability and welcoming vibe. Oh, and the food scene, a big surprise for first time visitors. There are 20+ bistros, gastropubs, and taverns tucked into the village’s 1.3 square miles, many with al fresco options, each with their own distinctive take on dining and cocktailing. A fine starting point for any Elkhart Lake culinary conversation is Lola’s on the Lake at the Osthoff Resort, the epit-

ome of chic farm-to-table cuisine. The culinary team sources from its own one-acre garden, a bounty finding its way to the menus of the resort’s restaurants as well as its elegant cooking school and spa café. That same farm-to-table sensibility shows up at the Paddock Club, where the weekly small plates menu showcases what’s fresh and flavorful from local famers and purveyors. At Lake Street Café, ask for a wine recommendation from their Wine Spectator-recognized selection to accompany the orecchiette con carne. On summer nights, linger in the beer garden. The Wisconsin tradition of the supper club can be found at Elkhart Inn, where steaks, chops and seafood dominate the menu and meals always start with a well-mixed Old Fashioned. While it looks all-tavern, you’ll have regrets if you don’t try the food at Brown Baer. Pop in to Stop-Inn Tavern at Siebkens Resort and you may spot a celebrity racer as you nosh on gourmet fried cheese curds washed down with a craft cocktail. That, after all, is the resorter way to vacation in Elkhart Lake.

Galesburg

Galesburg is a small city with big flavors, but no big city prices. People often ask if Galesburg is “close to Chicago”. Located in west central Illinois, just 45 minutes northwest of Peoria and 3 hours southwest of Chicago, it is close enough for a worthwhile daytrip or weekend getaway from the city. Make the trip and discover an Argentinian café, a creperie, and a brew pub to start. Recently, Galesburg has become known for its ethnic offerings, including: Korean, Indian, sushi and hibachi, and different styles of Mexican cuisine. Also gaining notoriety is its pizza scene, which is worth mentioning alone. Start your visit at Buenos Aires Bakery and Café for coffee infused with housemade dulce de leche and fresh pastries. You’ll also want to buy a jar of their signature chimichurri. Head downtown to enjoy locally owned shops featuring handmade arts, gourmet food, jewelry, and gifts. Here, you’ll find the Landmark Café and Creperie on Historic Seminary Street. The seasonal courtyard is a beautifully serene brick patio on which to indulge in the café’s renowned Spinach Bisque or savory crepes. Save room for dessert, as the Turtle Crepe is a must. If indulgences and exploration have you fatigued, stop into a local coffee shop. For a bright, modern atmosphere with in-house roasted coffee, check out Innkeepers. For something more lowkey with a funky vibe, relax in one of the mismatched chairs at The Beanhive. Spend the evening tasting a flight of local brews at Iron Spike Brewing Company before diving into one of their dishes featuring Sitka Salmon, a Galesburg based Alaskan fishing company. Head upstairs to The Players Lounge for cocktails and games or walk a few steps to another nighttime venue. Feeling a little spicy? Check out Koreana, A Taste of India, Osaka, MASA, or one of the four diverse, local Mexican restaurants.

Gaslamp Quarter

Santa Barbara boasts some of the freshest seafood around!

“The Funk Zone is a

streak in the midst of the deep history within Santa Barbara, and if you like wine and beer, it will be check-worthy.”

Way out west? You must be in CALIFORNIA, where you’ll have to check out what’s happening in Santa Barbara this season. Santa Barbara is known as the American Riviera, and deservedly so. There is much cultural history within Santa Barbara as well, and they say it is like stepping back in time to early Hollywood. There are boat-builders along the coast, and basket-weavers and artisan goods merchants that stand on every corner, beckoning you to come peruse through their many handmade items. Visit Stearn’s Wharf, the oldest working wharf in California, where you can shop along the coast and even participate in a wine tasting over-looking the Pacific Ocean; it is the only wine tasting of its kind!

There is plenty of water sports and general outdoor recreation here as well, including some major fishing hotspots, whale and dolphin watching, and sea kayaking. If you have kids with you, take them to see the marine museum and let them choose a souvenir from one of the many gift shops around. If they’re a tad bit over toddler-age, take them to the Paseo de la Guerra, which is a large outdoor arcade! For a more adult friendly – or drinking-age friendly – vacation, check out the Funk Zone, which prides itself on being the groove of Santa Barbara. There are plenty of wine tasting boutiques, cafés, art galleries, cool little shops, craft beer tastings, and much more. It is a contemporary streak in the midst of the deep history within the town, and if you like wine and beer, it will be check-worthy. Santa Barbara also boasts some of the freshest seafood around, as well as many modern takes on classics, complete with authentic wine pairings for an unforgettable meal. Visit santabarbaraca.com for more information when planning your next trip. If you’re looking for an authentic and historic night out, where you can explore your surroundings just as much as your cocktails, then head to San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, also in California.

Stearn’s Wharf

Known as the “Historic Heart of San Diego,” the Gaslamp Quarter is a district comprised of about 16 blocks of Victorian architecture that boast nearly 200 different restaurants, just under a dozen nightclubs, and right around 50 bars to hop from. It is quite a busy district, and the outlets are tiny, but getting elbow to elbow with the locals is what makes this place so much fun. Explore the grandeur of San Diego’s history with people who know how to have fun. If you’re touring from out of town, an easy trolley ride will get you to and from the district. For rentals and those who live nearby, the district is easily accessible via the freeway. Whether you’re into new age or old, Gaslamp Quarter has it all. From after-concert parties hosted by celebrities, to tiny hole-in-the-wall bars that make the best late night snacks in the region, no one leaves Gaslamp unsatisfied. For a Vegas-style nightclub, complete with elegant cuisine, opt to spend your evening at the Parq Restaurant & Nightclub. With state-of-the-art technology and sound equipment, aerial dancers, bottle service, and the “industry’s best hosts,” you can’t go wrong with a night at Parq. Call ahead to make a dinner reservation, where you’ll be greeted with excellent service and sit down to an extraordinary menu.
