cookbook FOR A CAUSE

Out of the Fire and Into the Kitchen cookbook provides a great photographic view of the firehouse chefs and the simple yet delectable dishes they make while on the job every day. Christina Morgado, professional photographer was inspired to start this project 2 years ago when she attended a food photography and styling conference hosted by Boston University. That is where she met some very talented and wonderful people who in one way or another were involved in a some type of cookbook project. Raised in a family pretty much made of firefighters; her father was a battalion chief for the department for 30 years, her brother is currently a captain with the same department, and uncle worked for the city of Miami and cousin for the Hollywood department. So for a little over 2 years Christina went to the stations, photographed the chef cooking and prepping the food and all the fun that goes along with it. Unfortunately, Christina Morgados father passed away in 2007 from acute leukemia, a cancer he acquired due to the job. In the positive and loving spirit of her father she recently established a charity in his name, The Indy Morgado Cancer Foundation, A Firefighter Family Support Fund. The foundation provides support for firefighters and their families when dealing with a job-related illness through education and assistance with the everyday challenges those families face. Founded by the daughter and family of a firefighters cancer victim, Christina Morgado, the IMCF is a network of firefighters, firefighters families, cancer survivors and mentors, and volunteers dedicated to oering support to fellow re department members in need no matter the form. Our goal is to prevent any family or family member from feeling alone when dealing with the diagnosis of a job-related illness. The IMCF is ever growing everyday just as our firefighters family grows. The IMCF network continues to expand through the comfort, support, strength, hope, and compassion provided by its volunteers and members of the “departmentâ€? family it creates every day. A portion of the cookbook sales will be going to this foundation. To learn more about the cookbook and to purchase visit mdfrcookbook.blogspot.com or visit www.cristinamorgado.com. Also available on Amazon.

A great place

to

GROW & LEARN By Patricia A. LaBella, Founder

Let me be the first to personally welcome you to our new facility! We are pleased to offer our unique private school and therapy ALL under one roof for our community. A great place to grow and learn all in one state-of-the-art location. Our unique setting is equipped to work with children of all ages and needs. As parents, we usually know and understand our children better than anyone else. Therefore, we also know better than anyone else when our children are struggling, stumbling, or suffering in any arena (home, school, and supermarket.). It is imperative we work collectively for vital fostering of optimal development for our children and community. For these reasons, we have established a comprehensive approach to accessing our children’s strengths and identifying their needs in a holistic fashion. We look at the child in a variety of settings while observing their responses to sensory stimulation, posture, balance, coordination, language, processing, reading, writing and eye movements just to name a few. After carefully discussing your child thoroughly, we work together to collectively make the very best recommendations to help your child maximize his or her potential. If specialized services are recommended, your loved one will be guided through activities that challenge his or her ability to respond appropriately to his or her learning environment to help access all three PAL Building blocks which include: 1. Language 2. Processing 3. Sensory Integration

26

FLAIR MAGAZINE

*

These three areas are fundamental to access their overall learning environment and maximize their given potential. Implementing and accessing these areas allow for making an overall successful and organized response utilizing our methodology. The most important step in promoting our three-tier approach is to recognize that it exists and that it plays an important role in the development of our children. We strive in working as a TEAM with teachers, physicians, counselors, therapists and all ancillary providers, to help them understand some of the characteristics and behaviors which impede our children’s learning and accessing of their environment. Please let me share some information with you . Sensory Integration sorts, orders, and eventually puts all of the individual sensory inputs together into a WHOLE brain function. When the functions of the brain are whole and balanced, body movements are highly adaptive, learning is easy, and good behavior is a natural outcome. -A. Jean Ayers Our body takes in information though our sensory system. There are seven sensory systems in the body: Visual, Auditory, Smell, Taste, Touch, Vestibular, and Proprioceptive. Throughout the day our body is bombarded with sensory information which is taken in through receptors and processed in the brain. The result is known as Sensory Integration. Signs of Potential Sensory Integration Dysfunction: • Poor Social Skills • Clumsy or Uncoordinated • Poor Attention Span • Reading Below Grade Level • Sloppy Handwriting or Coloring • Becomes Upset with Messy Play • Bothered

by Tags in Clothing • Poor Balance • Limited Diet and Refusal of New Foods • Not Keeping up with Peers • Avoids Climbing or Swinging Unusually Rough Play • Trouble Sitting Still • Becomes Upset during Grooming • Frequently Covers Ears • Difficulty Getting Dressed • Trouble Putting Puzzles Together. For most children, sensory integration develops in the course of ordinary childhood activities. Motor planning ability is a natural outcome of the process, as is the ability to respond to incoming sensation in an adaptive manner. But for some children, sensory integration does not develop as efficiently as it should. When the process of sensory integration is disordered, a number of problems in learning, development, and/or behavior are evident. If we can help your loved one in any capacity, please feel free to contact us and take the first step to making a difference. We welcome you to visit our new state-of-the-art facility where miracles are happening every day. Respectfully,

Patricia A. LaBella, Founder

For over 37 years in Davie, Berry Patio’s motto has been “For Today’s Outdoor Style”. In reality, though, their philosophy is much more involved. “One of the foremost things that we have tried to do with each customer is to educate them in what today’s outdoor furniture is.” says Ken. We strive to be unique and different, up to date, if you will. So the styles you see in our store now, will still be new and fresh on your patio a couple years down the road.

Customers need to realize, here is south Florida, the patio is a large part of your house. Often anywhere you are in the house, you are viewing the outside area as well. It sometimes is the whole back area of your living space. This describes another area of our philosophy; that is to point out to our customers that their needs are different than maybe someone up north, where a patio is a wood deck on the back end of the house. What this means to us is that we are looking for indoor style furniture made for the outside environment. we are getting our customers away from the ordinary .In Fact, one of the prominent lines we have, Summer Classics, does just that. Other lines, Lane Venture, Lloyd Flanders and Homecrest carry thru the indoor theme and accomplish that goal. We found that customers immediately see we are unique and different. We work with them to tailor these styles to their areas. In South Florida, our harsh environment demands that this furniture is made up of high quality materials that will enable it to endure many years in the elements. This is not an option or a choice at Berry Patio, it all must pass our criteria. If it’s not a proven product…we will not sell it.. as simple as that. While we believe that price is always important, we also urge the customer to understand the price points that enable one to get the quality that you need and expect. This is found in the frames, fabric and finishes. These are the three areas cheap furniture always falls short. After all, the most expensive way to buy furniture is to have to buy it every 2-3 years. By buying at Berry’s you get the best quality at the best price. Being family owned and operated has always meant answering all the questions and eliminating any hassles before or after the sale. In fact, without commissioned salespeople, we will not let you make a mistake or a wrong purchase for your outdoor areas. We take the time to guide you and help you choose just the right product for your outdoor living. Berry Patio is located at 4352 S. University Drive, in Davie. They are open 7 days; 10-6 MonSat.; noon-5 on Sundays. Please visit our web site for directions and examples of products www.BerryPatio.com or contact them today at 954.423-3841.

NATURAL ZUM BARS

BATH FIZ

Zum Bars are like pretty little snow flakes. No two are alike and you feel alive when dancing naked in their presence. They really are soaps for the senses. You feel ‘em, you smell ‘em, you see ‘em. You could even taste ‘em – though we don’t recommend it.

A flavorful and moisturizing scoop of luxury for your bathtub. Each piece is comprised of a unique six oil blend, purifying minerals, indulgent fragrances and Epsom Salt, and is one hundred percent artisan crafted, taking three days to custom make. ME! Bath Ice Cream® fizzes and melts immediately when submerged in water, releasing nourishing minerals and fragrant aromatic oils that will hydrate, moisturize and enrich your skin. Simply fill your tub normally and drop in a Bath Ice Cream®, soak and relax while your skin enjoys this decadent treat!

Zum Bars contain all-natural goats milk as the base. Why do we use goats milk in our soap? Well, we'll count those ways, too. Goats milk is naturally homogenized. (Betchya didn't know that.) Plus, goats milk offers a pH level that's nearly identical to your skin. Yep. So our Zum Bars won't leave you feeling oily or dry, but feeling just right. (And don't worry about those goats, we milk only happy goats from happy farms.) Items available at indigowild.com. from the EXPERTS Varicose veins are very prevalent in the United States. One out of two people over 50 have varicose veins. In one health survey, venous disease was found to be the seventh most common reason for medical referral in the United States.

GOODBYE V A R I C O S E

V E I N S by Susan B Fox

enous disease is a spectrum of disease that ranges from spider veins to increasing degrees of venous insufficiency. Usually, the disease is limited to varicose veins and mild leg swelling. However, with progressive degrees of vein problems, the disease manifests with increasing symptoms of leg pain, swelling, venous hemorrhage, venous eczema, discoloration, scarring and venous ulcerations.

V

Patients with mild to moderate disease will complain of restless leg syndrome, night cramps, heavy or tired legs or a burning or aching feeling in the legs. As the disease progresses, they will often have symptoms of increasing leg pain, swelling, bleeding, discoloration, superficial blood clots or leg ulcers. With increasing insufficiency, patients develop increasing degrees of tissue damage and more symptoms. It is important to notice venous insufficiency early in its course and treat appropriately before the patient develops an ulcer. For hundreds of years, all that was available to treat varicose veins was vein stripping. Patients were admitted to the hospital and placed under general anesthesia to have the veins removed and tied off. Recovery was several weeks and there were a great number of complications and a very high rate of recurrence within just a few years. Since the late 1990s, minimally invasive procedures have been used to close varicose veins, limiting patient’s discomfort, recovery and recurrence compared with vein stripping. Endovenous laser was FDA approved in January of 2002 for the treatment of venous insufficiency. A laser is placed inside of the vein and heats the blood and vein walls causing the veins to scar down and close shut. The procedure is performed in the office under local anesthetic. The entire procedure is performed through a small 2mm incision. Newer lasers have virtually no post procedure pain or bruising. Treating the entire vein takes only a few minutes. The Clarivein procedure is the newest FDA approved procedure that is performed for varicose veins. It is another minimally invasive procedure used to close saphenous veins or their tributaries in patients with venous insufficiency or varicose veins. The Clarivein procedure normally uses only one injection of local anesthetic and usually can be performed without any incisions. The Clarivein procedure is done in the office in minutes. The physician numbs one spot on the skin and places a wire that rotates inside the incompetent vein. The wire rotates while a detergent based sclerosant is injected into the vein. The patient receives only one or two injections of local anesthetic and can return to their normal activities immediately. The average treatment takes less than 5 min. and the whole procedure is performed in less than 15 minutes. It has a success rate of 99%. Susan B Fox, DO, RPVI, FSVM is board certified in the treatment of veins and in vascular medicine. She completed her residency and vascular fellowship in the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Cardiovascular Consultants of South Florida has offices in Davie, Pembroke Pines, Weston, Hollywood, Aventura and Plantation. For more information, visit www.nomoreuglylegs.com or call 954-965-4900.

IS THE BILINGUAL WORKFORCE TAKING OVER?

By Andreina Ojeda

selves. In Miami and Fort Lauderdale alone, there are more than 1.5 million Hispanic residents, accounting for over 40 percent of the total population The Census 2010 showed an unprecedented increase in the Hispanic population. Two out of five persons in the market are Hispanic, and two out of three Hispanic persons only speak Spanish at home. Other foreign languages are also gaining recognition. Besides the amazing increase of the Hispanic population, we have seen a growth of the non-Hispanic. Because of the Chinese boom, Mandarin, or Continental Chinese, has become a language in high demand. Workers who are thinking of better business and industrial opportunities are learning the language. Not to leave behind are French, Portuguese and Haitian Creole. These are in high demand mostly because of the affluence of people from countries where these languages are spoken.

Bilingualism is an asset for employers and employees alike. In today’s global village, it is becoming ever more difficult for firms in general to hire monolingual employees, not to mention the strain it causes on international firms. The business sector has come to realize that firms with bilingual literature and skills in areas such as sales, marketing and customer service have a competitive edge. Therefore, a prospective bilingual employee has a better chance of getting a job than a candidate with equal skills lacking a second language. Spanish represents the second most spoken foreign language throughout the United States. Florida is no exception. On the contrary, we are one of the areas with the highest Spanish-speaking population in the whole country. Statistics speak for them-

42

FLAIR MAGAZINE

*

This affluence of foreign language speakers has provoked our workforce to be more diverse than ever before. Employers prefer hiring workers who can understand the language of their customers than relying on monolingual workers. Therefore, the latter are losing employability. Everyday more and more positions call for bilingual employees. Many higher education institutions are including the study of a second language in their curricula. When it comes to a technical career, most likely there is not a chance for a curriculum that includes a foreign language. Fortunately, there are educational institutions, particularly language centers, devoted to give workers the skills necessary to succeed in the job market.

from the EXPERTS

from denial TO ACTION

By Valeria Vilar, MA, BEd, CHt, LMHC or the people who care about us, such as family members or friends. The person feels tense, vulnerable, reacts with hostility, resentment or criticism towards others. At times, this state of aggressiveness can turn into a state of “bargaining”. At this point, the person expresses a desire to recover his/her old job, no matter how unreal this situation can be. During this stage, the person feels depressed, upset, ashamed of himself, starts isolating himself from his social environment, and, at times, he even isolates from his own family, and beings to believe that he is no longer capable of reinserting himself into the labor market. It is important to understand that it is normal for people who face some kind of loss to undergo these stages. Otherwise, the anger and depression could get even more serious and it would take much longer to restore a new balance in your life.

Throughout this last year we’ve been hearing a lot of stories on the media, or among friends and family members, about the financial crisis and the large number of companies that are downsizing and dismissing their employees. Being separated from one’s job causes different reactions on different people. Generally, it creates financial and emotional distress. This distress not only affects the person who was separated from his/her job but also his/her family members, significant other or friends. When Greg got home with the news that he had lost his job, he was paralyzed; he couldn’t believe he was facing this situation. His wife tried to give him emotional support; she hugged him and comforted him, even though she was as astonished as he was with the news. Greg didn’t react well. He got angry with his wife and said, “¡It is easy for you to be calm; it was not you who got fired! ¡You don’t know what this feels like! ¡You don’t know anything! She tried to calm him down, to cheer him up and tell him that everything was going to be ok and that he had to be confident, but it was absolutely useless. This dialogue went on until Greg’s wife ended up responding aggressively and the situation escalated until neither of them listened to what the other was saying. Unfortunately, this type of argument resulting from job loss is pretty frequent. Losing your job, as any other type of loss, generates reactions that can range from shock and denial to acceptance and action. At first, it is normal for the person who was fired to be reluctant to believe what is happening to him, and to be in a state of shock and denial. Frequently, this stage is followed by a feeling of anger that is manifested as aggression toward oneself

44

FLAIR MAGAZINE

*

In my opinion, these emotions are normal and expected when dealing with this kind of loss, and it is important to help the person undergoing this loss to overcome it in the bestphotos possible way by helping him/her by maria baiz progress towards a new stage of acceptance that will most likely be followed by a new action. We have often suggested that in these situations it is best to avoid making other significant changes, keeping tight schedules o making appointments or commitments that are not absolutely necessary. This will help to achieve the necessary balance more smoothly. We know that being socially active, eating well, resting and exercising regularly are positive behaviors in this new situation and will help you achieve your goals. To sum up, even though it is expected that losing your job will generate stress, confusion, family crisis and other somewhat destructive emotions, there are some tools that can help us cope with this situation. Being able to ask for help in time is one of them. A friendly hand, a health care professional, a reasonable voice... all this can help provide the necessary tools when someone who is dealing with this issue is unable to clearly see the path ahead of him/her. These people will help the person to focus on the important things and generate the positive attitude necessary to overcome the loss, move on and plan for the future. Valeria Vilar, MA, BEd, CHt, LMHC, is the Clinical Director of Open Mind Bilingual/Spanish Counseling Center. She is Psychotherapist and a certified Hypnotherapist. ABOUT

By Valeria Vilar, MA, BEd, CHt, LMHC

Achieving balance in a couple’s relationship is no easy task. It requires effort and commitment from both parts. And even though it’s hard, it is very desirable, and yes, it is accomplishable. Relationship unbalance can be caused by various circumstances. I would like to focus today on those couples that stay together even though both of them feel unsatisfied, burdened, drowned and even maintain self-destructive actions. I’ve often heard from my patients expressions like: “I feel suffocated in this relationship”, “nothing seems to satisfy him”, “she is always trying to control me”, “he’s extremely jealous”, “She’s constantly asking where I’m at, who I’m with, what time I’ll be back, who’s that e-mail from, etc.” They feel constantly pursued and watched by their partners. Let’s explore this situation: I’ve noticed how this type of person wants to exert control over their significant other. They need to know of their every move, and even their every thought. They demand to spend more time together, and require constant attention. It never seems to be enough for them. They typically relate to a specific type of person and develop what we call a relation of emotional dependence. In emotional dependent relationships we find people with low self-esteem, with permanent feelings of loneliness, and an insatiable need of affection. Those symptoms are often accompanied by depression, anxiety, hostile attitudes, and feelings of failure. They can’t get out of the relationship even though it doesn’t satisfy them. Their behavior can be compared to that of a gambler. A gambling addict can spend all his money and even go into debt, because of an uncontrollable need to keep playing. At least one person in the couple is in desperate need of affection and approval from the other. To attain this, they struggle to please the other to an extreme that hurts their own pride and dignity and their expectations

regarding the relationship. They generate a sense of burden and asphyxiation in their partner. They don’t mean to abuse or own the other one, but come to these extremes prompted by their excessive need of affection. This kind of relationship can be also compared to a drug addiction. Because people that suffer either of these conditions go through the same feelings of craving, dependency and abstinence. Among the emotional dependents, or emotional addicts, we find: • An irresistible need, a craving, to have a partner and to spend time with them. • A tendency to put their partner before anything else in their lives. • A constant necessity to keep in contact with their partner when they are not present. • Devastating pain when the relationship is interrupted or ended. In a dependence relationship, both parts are unsatisfied, but they can’t get out of a constantly repeating behavior pattern. Conscious of the lack of harmony in their relationship, they make endless efforts to change it, but end up frustrated when they don’t get any significant results. These couples could achieve balance and harmony in their relationships by identifying the right ways to break the cycle. Ideally, they would need to create awareness of their situation and recognize which specific behaviors are adding up to the pattern of dependency they are going through. By developing this ability, these couples would be able to develop the loving, functional relationship they want, one in which both of them would be happy. Vitaman D:Layout 1 4/18/2012 7:51 PM Page 1

from the EXPERTS

FROM THE

D O C T O R

Optimal levels of Vitamin D will decrease your incidence of Breast Cancer by 83%, yes 83 per cent. Optimal Vitamin D levels will reduce your chance of heart attack and stroke by 78%, and more than 80% of asthma attacks can be totally prevented. Multiple sclerosis decreases; infections, allergies, depression, autoimmune diseases, acne and more could be cured or dramatically improved simply by increasing Vitamin D levels. These are well-documented medical facts with volumes upon volumes of clinical studies as back up!!! Taking Vitamin D is a no brainer; it is probably the simplest, cheapest way in medicine to save the most lives. Vitamin & Mineral Deficiency is a serious epidemic worldwide but I plan to fix my little corner. My clinic, Doctors Best now offers Intravenous Nutritional Supplementation.

Often oral vitamins simply aren’t enough; our gut function is impaired and our food supply is deficient. It is thought that we all get cancer 7 times in our lifetime but the strong fight it off. Today good Nutrition is essential; My mentor in IV Nutrition has 6 children that have NEVER taken an antibiotic, nutrition builds immunity. Unhealthy dietary and lifestyle habits are resulting in frightening consequences. Our generation is the first IN HISTORY that will not outlive its ancestors; our life expectancy is actually going down… and don’t count on the drug companies. The pharmaceutical Industry will never attempt to cure disease, they merely treat symptoms. We keep our diseases, continue to buy their expensive drugs, and they profit. If they develop a cure they put themselves out of business. Prescription drugs are dangerous, even when used as directed. Did you know, the 3rd leading cause of death in the US is properly prescribed medications! Functional Medicine (science based medicine) seeks to identify and treat the root cause of disease. Therapeutic doses of fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, herbs or hormones can often control disease as well and often better than the monster drugs pharmaceutical companies push.

Reasons to think about nutrition and fitness • Every 8 hours in a jet plane is equivalent to smoking 250 cigarettes…due to free radicals & oxidative stress. • Every 1 pound of fat we gain adds 1 mile of extra blood vessels that deplete nutrients. That same 1 extra pound adds 3 million pounds

by Val Manocchio MD of stress each year on your knees and hips. • Exercise dramatically increases and maintains memory. • Exercise is the true fountain of youth, it strengthens and builds new mitochondria; improved mitochondrial function means younger and healthier cells. • Expensive skin creams do little without adequate levels of silicon, zinc, and B vitamins, all needed to make collagen. • Don’t put Lemon in Tea; Aluminum, the second most abundant element in the earth’s crust is tightly bound in tea by polyphenols so it passes right through us, unless you add lemon; this fractionates the bond, releasing the metal to accumulate in our brain and tissues. • Viagra use is increasing because of the overprescribing of statin drugs which lower cholesterol; the building blocks of Testosterone.

More on Vitamin D Vitamin D, actually a hormone, has a direct effect on over 1000 genes. My own doctor was thrilled to bring my level up from 22 to 30, because now I was in the magical “normal range” (between 30100); yes at 30 I won’t get rickets; But medical science teaches us, a level of 52 would decrease my chance of Type 1 Diabetes by 66%. A level of 44 will drop my risk of any broken bones more than 50%, and at 33, I’m 72% less likely to even have a fall. How many elders would that save? Optimal Vitamin D levels decreases the incidence of “all cause mortality” by 77%; that’s any cause of death, from stroke to shark attack; studies document we do all things safer; athletic performance is dramatically improved. Simply taking this one nutrient WILL guarantee you have a longer, healthier life, a lot longer. If you can’t lose weight, you guessed it; higher Vitamin D levels may be needed. Take Vitamin D and you may NEVER have a cold again. The H1N1 flu is often called a disease of low Vitamin D. I leave you with one of my favorite quotes: “Do not believe in anything simply because you’ve heard of it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many, or merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason, then accept it and live up to it.” Buddha Doctors Best is located at 5542 S. Flamingo Road in Cooper City. Walk for the Animals A TAIL WAGGIN’ success! More than 4,000 people and their four-legged doggie companions descended on Huizenga Plaza in downtown Fort Lauderdale this past March. The walkers participated in the Humane Society of Broward County’s Annual Walk for the Animals presented by VCA Animal Hospitals and sponsored by PETCO Foundation and Ed Morse Automotive Group. As a result of everyone’s hard work and all the incredible sponsors the Walk for the Animals netted over $530,260 for the shelter. The Humane Society of Broward County is a private non-profit organization made possible by the generous donations of animal enthusiasts. The shelter is not affiliated with any other organization with a similar name and receives no funding from the state, tax dollars or any national group. Launch Party Launch of the new Yo Cuz! line of designer jewelry Robin and Mark Levinson, co-owners of Levinson Jewelers, and renowned restaurateur Steve Martorano, owner of the famous Café Martorano, hosted a fabulous party at Levinson Jewelers to launch the new Yo Cuz! line of designer jewelry. The urban chic jewelry line, which can be purchased at Levinson Jewelers and on the Café Martorano website, was collaboratively designed by Robin Levinson, Steve Martorano and Marsha Daley. Guests at the event were dazzled by the exciting new Yo Cuz! line while enjoying Italian delights catered by Café Martorano. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Yo Cuz! jewelry line will be donated to the Urban League of Broward County. “We are thrilled to partner with Steve on this exciting new venture,” said Robin Levinson, co-owner of Levinson Jewelers. “The Yo Cuz! collection is fun, hip, stylish and can be worn by anyone. I had a great time collaborating with Steve and look forward to extending the line with additional styles and designs.” The Yo Cuz! collection currently features a spectacular men’s and lady’s sterling silver Yo Cuz! bracelet with gemstones and silk macramé cord, retailing at $350 each. If you are looking for a little more attention grabbing dazzle, the line also includes a striking Yo Cuz! diamond bracelet which retails for $4,000. The collection also includes stunning Yo Cuz! necklaces, earrings, pendants and dog tags. Steve Martorano was inspired to create the Yo Cuz! jewelry line because the phrase, “Yo Cuz!” is a term of endearment he says every day. Originating in Philly, Steve frequently uses the phrase with close friends and family members, and he believes it will soon be more commonly used in everyday language. Both Levinson and Martorano have been stellar names in South Florida for decades. The Yo Cuz! jewelrycollection can be purchased at Levinson Jewelers at 888 East Las Olas in Ft Lauderdale or at www.cafemartorano.com. Wedding season:Layout 1 4/18/2012 8:10 PM Page 1

SURVIVING

WEDDING SEASON

tips

Wedding mania season has officially begun. Everywhere you turn the birds are singing a song of joy to trumpet the upcoming nuptials of scores of couples across the country. You will need stamina, speed, and courage to get through the season alive, and this list of survival tips will help ensure you make it out in one piece. 1. Prepare for the Great Outdoors Since everyone loves to schedule their special day in the summertime, there’s a fairly good chance you’ll be sweating your doobie wrap out in at least one outdoor wedding. Be sure you drink lots of fluids (liquor doesn’t count) and eat prior to the ceremony. You may also want to consider sunscreen and bug spray. However, if you do find yourself bitten by bugs, you can always use the alcohol from the open bar to sooth your skin. 2. Have an answer – to everything You already know that being the single gal at the celebration of marital bliss can make you the

odd woman out, and a good way to counter this is to have canned answers to every question imaginable. There is a 99.9% probability that someone’s nosy aunt will have questions about why your date hasn’t put a ring on it yet, so make sure your answer is of equal or greater ignorance than the query. For example, you could say something like “he’s only for show, they don’t allow my kind to get married in this state.” The look on said aunt’s face will be nothing short of priceless. 3. Bring something Please don’t be the ratchet friend that shows up to with a gift card to Applebee’s. Bring something appropriate for the occasion, it’s the least you could do, especially since the bride’s family is paying out the wazoo for you to scarf down everything on the buffett. A toaster or a blender, good. A Val-Pack coupon book, not so good. 4. Dress Appropriately At every wedding, without fail, there is someone who shows up in clothing that is more ap-

propriate for a player’s ball than a union of everlasting love. This is not the club. Men, please refrain from donning Steve Harvey short sets with straw hats and square-tipped Stacey Adams. 5. Share the Love Last but definitely not least on the list is to share the love. While some people take this to the extreme (trying to hook up with the groom’s younger brother after the party), it’s good to remember the whole point of the celebration. Weddings can be extremely exciting and extremely stressful for all who are involved in them, but remember that love is (or should be) the reason for the occasion. Share in the joy of the two people who are coming together to create a family. It’s a beautiful thing. Weddings are unavoidable but fun. Despite all the cultural expectations and cliches, keeping an open, practical mind through all the fanfare is key. Grab your dancing shoes and make the most of your wedding season, however long or short it may be!

Wedding cakes play a major role in the wedding party. In fact, some brides actually plan their entire weddings around the style of their cake. While traditional white, tiered cakes topped with the brideand-groom figures are still predominant, colorful cakes depicting kooky themes and personally-significant tableaux have taken a strong hold on our pop cultural psyche. They are the subjects of reality shows like TLC's Cake Boss and Food Network's Ace of Cakes. Which style of cake should you choose? What should it taste like? After all, you want that special day to last in the sensory memories of both sight and taste. WHITE White wedding flowers can look absolutely fabulous as you walk down the aisle. A white Calla Lily is so beautiful it only needs a little green foliage to look stunning. White roses are popular in hand-tied bouquets. White tulips can look dramatic just by themselves and Lily of the Valley is a much-prized flower. Another white wedding flower that is fragranced is Stephanotis, this small flower have been a popular addition to bridal bouquets for years.

ORANGE Orange wedding flowers provide a vibrant color theme for those brides looking for something a little bit different. It's a great color for summer and autumn weddings. There are lots of different flower choices including the beautiful mango calla lily featured in the bouquet below, as well as gerberas, roses, freesias and birds of paradise.

PINK To make a bold statement choose the cerise pink coloured gerberas such as 'Serena'. More subtle pale pinks and dusty pinks are also available. More popular pink flowers include bright pink gerber daisies, stargazer lilies, and roses together with purple lisianthus.

GREEN This is the perfect color pairing for a modern and elegant summer wedding. Lighter green flowers, like green roses paired with banana leaves in a bouquet, are a great way to accent a white-and-black wedding dress.

YELLOW There’s a number of choices of yellow roses. Yellow lilies work very well in table arrangements and venue arrangements. Daffodils are a great choice if you are having a Spring wedding. Gerber daisies are for brides who want their yellow wedding flowers to be bright, vibrant and full of zing! Tulips are also a popular yellow flower and great for both bouquets and venue arrangements.

RED Two of my favourite red rose varieties are 'Grand Prix' and 'Passion'. Not only are these varieties a perfect colour, they have a beautiful soft velvety texture. Other red flowers that you may like to consider in your bouquet include: Anthuriums , Gerberas, Freesias, Tulips and Alstroemeria .

PURPLE Lisianthus comes in a variety of colours. Purple varieties include 'kyoto purple' and can work well together with white lisianthus and other larger focal flowers. The exotic orchid Vanda, has a wonderful variety with a purple and white chequered appearance. Freesias, Gladioli , Tulips and Stocks are among the lilac/purple varieties.

BLUE One of the largest blue wedding flowers is hydrangea, this is a lovely flower for the bride wanting to make a statement with her bouquet. Delphiniums are available in sky blue right through to rich dark blue varieties. Their height makes them particularly good for tall table center arrangements, and for ceremony arrangement pedestal stands. Statice is another flower that verges on violet.

This choice says you’re: trustworthy, easygoing and honest with beliefs and values.

Princess The look: This relatively new square shape, with a modern, understated feel, combines a sparkly, brilliant effect with a geometric step-cut. You can attribute its spectacular glitter to extra faceting around the rim. This choice says you’re: decisive and fun-loving.

Emerald The look: Inspired by the Asscher, this glamorous choice is also a rectangular step-cut shape. It has fewer facets than some of the other shapes, so look for an emerald-cut that offers maximum brilliance. This choice says you’re: efficient and straightforward. 88

Marquise The look: The marquis shape is an oval with tips. It not only helps to make the hand appear longer and slimmer, but it also makes the diamond appear larger than it actually is. The choice says you’re: unique and adventurous

Oval The look: If you love the gorgeous sparkle of a round, brilliant-cut diamond but still want something unique, consider an oval. A fresh take on a timeless style, this new shape came about in the early 1960s. This choice says you’re: risk-taking and creative.

Radiant The look: The diamond’s shape has the outer lines and cut corners of the emerald’s crown while enjoying triangular faceting like the round on the pavilion. It was designed to have the best qualities of both round brilliant and emerald cut diamonds. This choice says you’re: trend settings and fashionable

Pear The look: Resembling a teardrop, a pear-shaped diamond has the fire and beauty of a round shape, but with a less conventional look. This shape canmake a wide finger look slimmer. This choice says you’re: even-tempered and adaptable.

Heart The look: This century-old shape, symbolizing love and devotion, should be well proportioned for optimum sparkle. This choice says you’re: sentimental and dreamy.

by Maria Garcia-Kalb You would think after writing a humorous book titled “101 Ways to Torture Your Husband” I’m probably not the biggest fan of wedding season, but SURPRISE! I happen to adore weddings, and there’s nothing more exciting than the rush I get when a thick envelope arrives at our home signaling the start of a loving union.

Now while I relish all things white, frilly, and wedding related, there are some issues which I feel need to be addressed right here, right now (I'm getting a mani-pedi in about an hour, so now happens to be a good time). Brace yourselves because it’s not going to be pretty. While the current challenging economy has forced many couples to cut corners and forgo some wedding luxuries in order to say “I do,” there are some traditional elements which are downright nonnegotiable when it comes to proper wedding etiquette. I believe some folks need a giant wake-up call so here it is: Ring! Ring! The Tacky Wedding Police are on the phone, they're asking for you. Don’t make me point fingers, you know who you are. Now I know what you’re thinking.. who died and crowned me “Miss Manners?” I ask you to bear with me before making any judgments and read on. My husband and I were recently mortified after attending an intimate wedding held at an upscale seafood restaurant. The establishment was perfectly lovely, with about 40 guests in attendance. The attractive couple (dressed in fashionable, but low-key wedding attire) exchanged vows by candlelight and brought tears of joy to the eyes of many with touching vows of commitment and unconditional devotion. Champagne was poured, dinner was served, and then I REALLY wanted to when the following scenario unfolded. Just as the dessert orders were being taken, and the intoxicating aroma of brewed gourmet coffee filled the air, the best man stood up, and dropped what seemed like an atomic bomb into the room. He began by toasting the happy couple, thanked everyone for being

there, then unceremoniously announced that as a gift to the bride and groom we were all be responsible to PAY FOR OUR OWN MEALS. Shock! Horror! Dismay! While you are sitting there with your mouth hanging open in awe (as ours were that night) here are some other wedding faux pas which should be avoided at all costs to make your special day a complete success: •Theme weddings. Go all out if you and your groom want to be

Twilight vampires (true story) but forcing your guests to dress up is not acceptable. •Sending invitations excluding adult members of a family who live under the same roof. •Email invites or online RSVP requests. •Late wedding start times. (Yes, 8pm is too late). •Requesting "cash" in lieu of gifts in ANY way, shape, or form. •Bratty brides (The “it’s your day thing”gets old pretty fast). •Going overboard with a “green” theme. *Asking guests to make donations to your favorite charity. •Cash bars (UGH!) •Couple Dollar Dances. (Please don’t make me explain). •Deciding thank you cards aren’t necessary.

Giving my book as a gift as a bachelorette party favor or as a bonus wedding gift is absolutely acceptable. Happy Wedding Season everyone. Cheers! 101 Ways to Torture Your Husband is available at Borders, Barnes and Noble, Amazon etc. and its wildly affordable at just $9.95!

love ALL YOU NEED IS

- appointment with the past -

Congratulations! Yes, and celebrations, you both deserve it. "Let´s get married!" They were alone in New York City, a sudden decision but cherished for a long, long time, and were married on sport outfits, why not, the wedding gowns were in their hearts, allow me to introduce this couple: He is a person dedicated to provide happiness, making others' dreams come true and now is his turn, his story also deserves to be told here, our editor-in-chief, Mr. Ángel Díaz and his wife, Mrs. Ained Rodriguez,. are the main characters of this love story. 1990 - This year marked the beginning of a beautiful romance which was broken for one of those things that fate fabricates, against the will of lovers. They never saw each other for the long period of twentyone years, so many common places where to be encountered: the mall, the market,

the pharmacy, the road on which they drive—it was just now, it had to be now— not before not after, just now. Not a single day passed by during these long twentyone years in which they stopped thinking of one another and that energy released to the universe, that inner suffering, that yearning, that desire of seeing the loved one, enabled the miracle to happen, and they saw each other, face to face that glorious December 3rd, 2007 (Ángel does not forget this date, amazing memory). Their lives turned apart and followed different paths, they separated, however, their love remained intact, just waiting…They never knew what happened to the other one, but thanks to a common friend, they met again, they were very lucky, only few people can experiment that joy in their life time. There are many longing for these reunions just to see the missing party, one more time. Some loves do not die, this one is

one of those, a good story to write a love book with data from reality. Dreams do come true, but you have to dream with strength and every single day. It was meant to be… After the reunión: More or less, everything happened on December 20, 2010, Ángel proposed Ained in front of her children and other relatives who were with them in the winter vacations of December in the mountains of North Carolina, in a gorgeous chapel of Deerwood Park in Piney Creek City, an exclusive site of cabins in the mountains, "Wow, what a surprise"" for everyone, except for Gisela, Ained´s sister who knew what the plan was, just to take everybody there, to see the snow in the evening, an iced walking area, and enduring a cold weather of 17 degrees, Gisela kept the wedding ring for the occasion since they began walking to the mountains.

“ AFTER THE REUNION

… ....dreams do come true…but you have

to dream with strength every single day.…

"Wow, what a surprise"" for everyone, except for Gisela, Ained´s sister who knew what the plan was, just to take everybody there, to see the snow in the evening, an iced walking area, and enduring a cold weather of 17 degrees, Gisela kept the wedding ring for the occasion since they began walking to the mountains. Osmedi and Luis, friends of the couple who live there, were of the idea of taking them to that site, since they knew about Ángel´s intention. " What a beautiful place!" A peaceful atmosphere surrounded the site. It was a moment filled with emotion and accepted by everyone. Ained´s children said: "Congratulations, good, good” and little Jeanette stated: "Of course, mom, Ángel is cool" and she added: "Now, I have a daddy, " and Gisela stated: " Welcome to the family". But it was not until February 18, 2011—full moon, by the way—in the city of Lights, New York and during a vacation period that they were alone in the big apple that Ángel said: "Let’s get married!" and they did it, dressed in sport outfits in the Municipal Court of Manhattan before a judge and an elegant lady, resident of Manhattan, of Porto Rican origin, Mrs. Gladys Meadowcroft, of eighty years of age in the company of her granddaughter Ms. Shamika Baez, who was their witness at the wedding, where they joined two lives. That was the way they have chosen, alone in New York (details won't be told, ok?). A phone call to Miami was made to inform everybody about the new event, the couple´s respective children who said: "What a surprise!" Then, upon arriving to the Miami Airport, nobody was there to receive them, however, a group of youngsters headed by José, Ained´s eldest son, arrived to the airport to provide them a noisy welcome at the parking lot of the Delta Airlines terminal, "what a show!", but things did not end there, on

the route to home, we called Jeanette, 10, and she had the idea of receiving us by surprise with champagne, a wedding cake, balloons, flowers, and wedding stuff on the table. She was waiting for us outside and told us: "Put your hands on your eyes, you cannot see until you step into the house!," we did not have the slightest idea what was going on and "what a surprise!" Gisela and Jorge, Ained´s siblings were there along with Miguel Ángel, the youngest son of Ained, and of course, the bunch of young people who welcomed us at the airport and the little coordinator of the warm welcome at home. It was a moment of full emotion, they did not expect that, and Ángel looked the happy faces of his new confirmed family, they were sincerely happy. He has stated the following: "That night was a very special for us. After some days, we met my daughter Yanais and her husband Hugo in a restaurant in Miami, celebrating once more our wedding. Some days after, we all traveled to Summerfield, a city located in central Florida where Ángel´s parents and siblings live to share with them the feelings of happiness that the couple is experimenting. And as the saying goes: "There are some unforgettable loves," Ained, my wife and me, are witnesses of that. And since I gave all the details to my chronicler, I am sure she will sentence at the end: "Congratulations, Long Live Love!," and that was exactly what happened and these are the sincere wishes of all the people who work in Anmar® Party Magazine, and: "Let´s happiness to be multiplied and extended in their lives!"
