:1000 ISLANDS

“A place that checks a lot of those boxes is the 1000 Islands – pronounced Thousand Islands – along the border between northern New York State and Ontario, Canada.”

lot of vacation destinations are boasting about the outdoors this year. Even cities are pointing to their parks and recreation areas. It makes sense; with the thirst for wide open spaces at an all-time high due to Covid-19 restrictions, destinations are trying to fit the new “it” mold. For a few destinations, however, the messaging is unchanged because they’re exactly what cooped up Americans want: open air, clear water and few people around, or to put it more bluntly, few people in the way.

A

A place that checks a lot of those boxes is the 1000 Islands – pronounced Thousand Islands – along the border between northern New York State and Ontario, Canada. This internationally known yet somehow still feeling undiscovered little getaway is regarded for its miles of diverse waterway and – of

course – its islands….all 1,864 of them to be exact. It’s here that the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario offer shockingly clear depths to check out shipwrecks with local outfitters and a fishery so diverse that it attracts first-timers, worldwide hunters in search of 5-foot-long freshwater monsters and every skill in-between. The Black River’s Class III-IV rapids offer a surprising whitewater experience for pros and enough accessibility for novices heading out with a guide. Top that off with some of the prettiest sunsets – anywhere – and you’ll discover why this hidden gem tucked away in the Northeast is the ideal spot for your next outdoor adventure, whether you’re packing your dive tanks, thermal ice fishing gear or just a pair of sneakers because you want to escape to somewhere with a few more open spaces. The 1000 Islands, yes like the dressing of the same name, is a place where the outdoors comes naturally.

Steam trains have shuttled passengers throughout the west for over a century. So has the bicycle! That glorious era of engineering is alive and well in Ely, Nevada at the Nevada Northern Railway National Historic Monument. Trains run daily, Spring through Fall, and carry passengers on the same routes as it did 110 years ago. Now you can enjoy having you and your bike shuttled to the end of the line during any regular scheduled train and ride one of many routes back to town at your own pace with the brand new “Trains and Trails Ticket”. Either direction the train goes, riders will have options ranging from 6 miles all the way up to 20 miles or more back to town. Routes consists of rolling dirt roads that go past historic mining, railroad, and ranching sites, garnet collection areas, and gorgeous mountain views in all directions.

14 | Fall 2020 | Adventure Outdoors

Routes are suitable for families with kids who want to have a fun, unique experience, but also offers the option to extend your ride up to distances that will make the most experienced cyclists sweat. Ely currently has over 40 miles of mountain bike singletrack in an ever-expanding trail system that leaves right from downtown. The county also boasts hundreds of miles of mountain roads for gravel exploration, but it is one of the only places in the country where you can use a historic train to shuttle you to these recreation opportunities. Ely is a yearround mountain town situated at the eastern end of Nevada’s Loneliest Road, Highway 50 and intersects with Highway 93. Home to two state parks and Nevada’s only national park, vast recreation opportunities are an easy drive from Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, or Reno. Ely is a place where history, arts, and the outdoors have come together for over 150 years to define this remote community that has played a major role in the Nevada and the American story.

Home to two state parks and Nevada’s only national park, vast recreation opportunities are an easy drive from Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, or Reno.

In true frontier spirit, Race the Rails is an annual event in September where cyclist load their bikes on the steam train for a ride to the historic mining town of Ruth. After a pleasant 45 minute trip through time, participants then unload, line up, and race the train back to town either on pavement or dirt where music and a banquet await. An experience that was limited to only once a year is now available anytime with the “Trains and Trails Ticket” at the Nevada Northern Railway. anab, a tiny picturesque town nestled in Utah’s sage-studded desert, is a colorful place. It’s known for intensely hued rocks, mysterious slot-canyons, stately junipers, and all-around adventurous terrain. Naturally, a place with such otherworldly beauty (and a place that happens to be within day-tripping distance of Vegas) draws plenty of visitors. Here are our five favorite ways to slip away and get to know the landscape. Hike White Pocket Here’s one adventure that you’ll want a proper fourwheel-drive vehicle to access. But is it worth it? A hundred times, yes. Grab a detailed map and head to this multicolored natural work of art.

You can hike a half-day to explore the main slickrock trail, or spend an entire weekend getting to know these swirling rocks’ nooks and crannies. If the drive sounds intimidating, not a worry: multiple guide services in Kanab offer tours of White Pocket year-round and would be happy to take you there and show you the scenery. Wander the site of an old ghost town Plagued by the regular flooding of the Paria River, this old, nameless, western town outside Kanab was slowly abandoned by its inhabitants in the late 1800s and early

1900s. It remained a popular movie set for Western films until the set burned down years ago. Little remains of the old ghost town, but what does remain is worthy of the drive. Take a vehicle that can handle the dirt road that accesses the town site. But take our pro tip: make the drive in late-afternoon as the sun lights up the rocky landscape before sunset. Explore the Kanab Caves It’s a fairly short walk—and a bit of a scramble—to get into this stunning series of cave rooms.

KANAB, MAGICALLY UNSPOILED There’s more magic than ever in Kanab this year, as we celebrate the town’s 150th Anniversary. There’ll be events and celebrations throughout 2020, so when it’s the right time, plan that family vacation, weekend getaway, or scenic Southern Utah road trip. For a full list of events – and help planning your trip – go to VisitSouthernUtah.com

This is another destination that’s perfectly lit shortly before sunset, so a late-afternoon visit is ideal—perhaps after dropping by nearby Best Friends Animal Sanctuary to feel the love from some rescue animals. The caves are visible from Highway 89 just after you pass the animal sanctuary. You’ll have a brief hike across the sagebrush country, keeping the caves in sight. Once you approach them, you can scramble up the rocks and shimmy right in. Gaze into the North Rim of the Grand Canyon The Grand Canyon is, of course, on everyone’s ticklist. But a tiny percentage of Grand Canyon visitors go to the more out-of-the-way North Rim—which happens to be accessible from Kanab via two-hour drive. Snag a map and take a day to explore beyond the Visitor Center. Stunning vistas, airy trails, and unparalleled vastness await North Rim visitors. And, quiet, lots of peace and quiet.

HUNTING THE DAYS GROW SHORTER, THE NIGHTS GROW LONGER, AND HUNTERS FIND THEMSELVES IN THE BEST PART OF THE YEAR. YOU SPENT YOUR SUMMER PREPARING, NOW GET READY FOR THE FALL HUNTING SEASON OF YOUR DREAMS! WE’VE GATHERED INFORMATION ON A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING – GEAR, LOCATIONS, AND TECHNIQUES SURE TO HELP YOU MAKE THE CATCH OF A LIFETIME THIS AUTUMN.

“THE HIGH PLAINS OF WYOMING ARE PERFECT FOR THE BATTLE OF WITS BETWEEN MAN AND BEAST.”

LOCATION IS KEY WHEN IT COMES TO PLANNING THE PERFECT HUNTING TRIP. THE IDEAL LOCATION PROVIDES YOU WITH THE BEST GAME, THE BEST GROUND CONDITIONS, AND THE BEST WEATHER FOR A SUCCESSFUL HUNT. WE HAVE DONE OUR DUE DILIGENCE AND LOCATED THREE INCREDIBLE DESTINATIONS FOR A SUCCESSFUL AUTUMN HUNT – READ ON TO MAKE YOUR PLANNING A BREEZE!

PLAINS OF WYOMING Imagine being able to track your prey over miles of gently rolling grassland plains. The ghosts of mountains loom in the distance, and the chill in the air is just sharp enough to keep you awake and focused. The high plains of Wyoming are perfect for the battle of wits between man and beast – whether you are pursuing a moose, an elk, a deer, or one of the plentiful small game creatures that call this prairie home, you are sure to find success here in the heart of nowhere. If you go during the late fall, there’s a good chance a dusting of snow will help you follow the tracks of your quarry. Be careful, stay aware, and happy hunting! WASHINGTON STATE The Pacific Northwest is known for lush forests and snow-capped mountains. For hunters, though, it’s known as an ideal spot to bag a mule deer or a black bear. Explore the Palouse region and next to the Snake River to bag yourself an ideal buck with antlers to die for. A typical fall day in the Palouse area will have you seeing around fifty bucks and two hundred total deer, fantastic numbers by

anyone’s standards. If black bear is more your style, then head to the northeast corner of the state to find the best bear odds. Hunters had a success rate of ten percent in that area, higher than the state’s overall success rate. Track and bag a black bear that will give you something to be truly proud of. TEXAS After years of hunting, traditional big name game might seem a little passé. Shake up your normal hunting routine and pursue game that might seem a little unconventional! Head on down to Texas for warm weather and interesting prey. Fall in Texas means you can hunt doves, alligators, even the javelina – a small, hog-like creature that can be hunted and eaten just like traditional pig. And if someone invites you to a snipe hunt, they are not trying to play a prank on you; the snipe is a real bird and can be found on rice fields and coastal prairies – they prefer wet and muddy ground. This longbilled bird is surprisingly difficult to target, since their flight pattern is twisting and unpredictable. With patience and a little luck, though, you can absolutely reach the eight-bird daily limit.

“WHETHER YOU’RE WADING THROUGH SWAMPS OR CLIMBING UP MOUNTAINS, YOU NEED TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET.”

Are you carrying your equipment into an unknown weather situation? Do you hunt in all conditions, mist and rain notwithstanding? Then you truly need an all weather rifle case to keep your gun safe and dry. Find one designed to prevent rust and corrosion, with a seal that is both watertight and dust-proof. Protect your investment, protect your tools, and protect yourself all at the same time with a quality rifle case. Plano Molding has an All-Weather rifle case designed to fit your needs with foam padding to keep travel from jostling things around. CLOTHING When you are planning to spend a great deal of time out in the wilderness, whether following your prey or sitting in a blind waiting for them to come to you, comfort truly is key. Whether you’re wading through swamps or climbing up mountains, you need to take care of your feet. Slide into a pair of Irish Setter Vaprtrek boots and you won’t regret a moment of it. These boots are flexible, durable, and well insulated – they will bend without breaking and protect you from the elements in style. Trust the quality and the reliability of a well-known hunting boot brand and save yourself the heartache and the athlete’s foot.

while in The Good Times Valley!

For as long as humans have been hunting, we have been employing a wide variety of hunting strategies. These vary depending on the game being pursued, the season, the terrain, and even the personal preference or skill of the hunter. No matter what you choose, do your research and make sure you hunt safely! >TECHNIQUES SCOUTING AND TRACKING For those unfamiliar with hunting, this is probably the mental image that appears when hunting is discussed – a lone person examining tracks on the snowy ground, and following them silently into a forest, ears perked to listen for the slightest rustling noise. This isn’t too far off – scouting and tracking is the practice of following animal tracks and signs – scratches on the ground or underbrush, dropped feathers, footprints, scat, and other such animal sign. This lets you get a sense of where the animal is headed and what sort of condition it is in, and lets you pursue your prey on your

22 | Fall 2020 | Adventure Outdoors

own terms. Sneaking up on an animal in its natural habitat takes great skill and much practice, and learning the signs of your chosen game will take you a long way towards finding what you came to kill. BLIND HUNTING Hunting requires a great deal of patience – blind or stand hunting doubly so. Once you have scouted the perfect location, set up everything you need, camouflage your blind and yourself, all you can do is wait and watch. When picking your spot, keep in mind which direction the wind is blowing – you don’t want you scent to float downwind and scare off any potential game. Be patient! Bait the area around you with a salt block, scattered grain, apples, or other food – but check to make sure that bait hunting is legal in your area, so you don’t run foul of the law. Settle in with a hot drink and be at peace with the wilderness, waiting for your prey to come to you. When the moment is right, you’ll be ready to strike!

f there’s one thing this amazing nation of ours is known for, it’s the true majesty of its landscape. The sheer breadth of the country allows for a huge variety of scenic views. Bookended by beaches, with mountains rising and falling next to sprawling prairies, dotted with waterfalls and cut through by winding rivers, there’s a little piece of peace and beauty no matter where you travel. If you want your breath taken away by the beauty of the land before you, check out our recommendations below.

GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK >Wyoming People make a lot of jokes about Wyoming, but clearly those people have never stood at the foot of the craggy mountains looming overhead in Grand Teton National Park. Described as a “dramatic section of the Rocky Mountains”, the Teton Range is forty miles of jagged and rocky peaks that are heartstoppingly beautiful. The national park is the perfect way to experience the local land and explore the unique geological features that make this region stand out. You can

see every different type of rock here – igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary – and also marvel at the glacier-carved canyons that swoop through the park. Boat, float, or fish along the Snake River and get your adventure on in Wyoming. GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK >Tennessee If you have a deep, burning desire to make your way to the top of a mountain and stare in wonder at the blanket of trees below, stretching off into the distance before being

enveloped by clouds, then Great Smoky Mountains National Park is where you belong. Drive or hike your way to a handy lookout area, and try to take in the natural beauty as far as the eyes can see. In the fall the leaves will be fiery red and orange, catching the sun and almost coming alive with a glow that has to be seen to be believed. Peaks and valleys of the Smoky Mountains cascade away in all directions, with tendrils of fog curling around the mountaintops and blending with the mist thrown up from the occasional waterfall. Stay for sunset for a true color explosion.

OHIO

Chillicothe & Ross County, Ohio are nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Region in southern Ohio. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy five State Parks, a National Park with five sites, along with many city and county parks. These sites collectively provide over 200 miles of trails for hiking and biking through beautiful forests and prairies that provide spectacular views of scenic vistas, ravines, and mature woodlands. In addition to the beautiful landscape, Hopewell Culture National Historical Park’s sites offer visitors the opportunity to view prehistoric earthworks that were created over 2,000 years ago. These magnificent earthworks were built to monumental sizes

and with precise, geometric shapes. Much about this culture remains a mystery, however these sites have been identified to be locations for celebrations, funerals, and rites of passage for this culture. Because of their cultural significance, these sites are part of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks nomination to receive inscription to the World Heritage List. The State Parks offer a variety of amenities and activities for families. You can enjoy paddling along calm waters of lakes, playing a round of disc golf, designated beaches for swimming, miniature golf, and even rock climbing. There are many areas for children to play and picnic areas through the Parks to spend quality time with the entire family.

Beyond the trails and parks of Ross County, visitors can sit beneath the stars as the action-packed production of “Tecumseh!” unfolds on the stage of Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre. Each summer this outdoor drama mesmerizes and entertains audiences, young and old, with the story of the noble efforts made by the famed Shawnee leader defending his Ohio homelands during the 1700s. WHITE SANDS NATIONAL MONUMENT New Mexico Once you cross the border of this beautiful national park in New Mexico, there are rolling hills of sparkling white as far as the eye can see. Sounds unusual for a desert state, yes? But this is not snow. These hills are made of white gypsum sand, wind-blown and rippled, glinting in the bright sunlight. Covering over two hundred square miles of land, these gypsum dunes have a long history – some areas of this national park have been used for missile testing, mining, ranching, and more. Right now this incredible piece of Americana is accessible to anyone looking for an adventure – hike amongst the dunes, admire the hardy plants and animals thriving in this desert environment, even bring your horse for a freewheeling desert gallop. Camp overnight and marvel at the star-strewn sky. Whatever you desire from an outdoor adventure, White Sands is there for you. s there anything more peaceful and relaxing than setting up a perfect campsite? Pitching your tent, starting a crackling fire, cooking for yourself, and relaxing in the open air, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. It’s a fantastic opportunity to really get cozy and comfortable, with nothing to distract you from the wild beauty of the outdoors. Overnight camping lets you get to know the beauty of the outdoors at all times of day and night, from the first rays of sunrise to the dramatic spill of the Milky Way. We’ve picked a few of the nation’s best areas to camp in – no matter your tastes, you’ll find something to please you here.

Shenandoah National Park VIRGINIA

Stretched out across 200,000 acres of beautiful protected lands, Shenandoah National Park is the epitome of Southern beauty. Expanses of beautiful trees, changes in elevation that let you gaze uninterrupted across Virginia, and streams that cascade into waterfalls mean that no matter where you set up camp you will be tucked firmly amidst nature’s most colorful elegance. Shenandoah has options for campers with any level of experience. New to this activity? Pick one of the five campgrounds available to you and set up your tent in style – just be sure to follow all rules and regulations! They are in place for your safety, especially the ones about food storage and disposal. The last thing you want is to encourage bears to associate humans with food – that could have disastrous consequences. If you are a more experienced camper and want a bigger challenge that will immerse you in the wilder side of Shenandoah, you are able to do some backcountry camping! This style of camping is heavy on selfreliance and preparation, so be sure you bring proper equipment, get a map, plan your trip thoroughly, learn the rules and regulations, and most importantly – enjoy yourself!

IS THERE ANYTHING MORE PEACEFUL AND RELAXING THAN SETTING UP A PERFECT CAMPSITE?

Ozark National Forest ARKANSAS

Badlands National Park S O U T H DA KOTA

Imagine a place where you can ascend the tallest mountain in the state, climb down through a million acres of green forest, and descend into a magnificent living underground cave. Ozark National Forest in Arkansas has all of this and so much more available to the casual hiker or serious camper. Whether you have a group celebrating a milestone in the wilderness or you are on a solo adventure of self-discovery, Arkansas and the Ozarks are here to welcome you and to make your journey as fun as possible.

If sprawling forests and rolling hills aren’t your idea of a beautiful destination, then head north to Badlands National Park. Jagged geological formations loom over grassy prairies where bison roam, pronghorn antelope graze, and prairie dogs peep up from holes in the soil. This area is one of the richest fossil beds in the country, so you might get lucky while exploring and stumble across the jawbone of an as yet undiscovered creature! Feel the wind coursing across the great expanse of the plains, and really understand your place in the vastness of the universe.

You can camp any way you want here! Bring your RV and set up shop, rent a cabin for the night with your friends, pitch your tent at one of the developed campsites if you want close access to a hot shower, or find a pretty patch of ground in the forest to be your temporary home. Stay well away from creeks and tributaries – if a heavy rain comes through, the water levels will rise and flood your setup if it’s too close. Leave no trace – in fact, leave the area better than you found it, if you can. Pack out everything you packed in, and get ready to become closer to nature than ever before.

Badlands National Park has two designated campsites, a large 96site one near stunning views of Cedar Pass and one located on Sage Creek Rim Road with fewer spots but a more primitive feel. You are welcome to bring your horse with you to the Sage Creek campground – a portion of the site is designated for horse use. Bringing a large group? Reserve one of the group campsites at the Cedar Pass campground. If you’d rather indulge in the challenge of backcountry camping, you are more than welcome to pitch your tent amidst the rising stone spires of the Badlands. Make sure you read all rules and regulations before setting out, and register your intended journey ahead of time

But today’s gold isn’t easily found, so focus your hunt on more easily caught treasures, many of which may be hooked in and around the Ruby Mountains. There are more than two dozen alpine lakes sprinkled throughout the range with fish awaiting your line. On the southeast side of the range outdoor enthusiasts will discover one of the most remote refuges in the lower 48 states. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking, cycling, running and other outdoor recreation activities. Those who take their adventure to higher elevations may find garnets (where the Rubies got their name), wildflowers and arborglyphs along with more lively mountain goats, bighorn sheep and the elusive Himalayan Snowcock. However, these areas aren’t always accessible. The elevation of the Ruby Mountain Range lends itself to year-round snow in some areas and early- as well as late-season snowfall.

Whether you’re a trail blazing, peak bagging, galloping adrenaline junkie or an art strolling, line casting, Sunday driving seeker — Elko, Nevada has something to offer for your next adventure.

The Northeastern Nevada Museum offers exhibits chronicling the history of mining, railroads and ranching in the region as well as the Native American, Basque, Chinese and cowboy cultures still thriving today. The California Trail Interpretive Center, Cowboy Arts & Gear Museum and Western Folklife Center also offer insights into how Elko became the hidden gem it is today. Each also offers the opportunity to purchase locally crafted souvenirs to commemorate your time here.

If you take your expedition away from the Rubies, there are several other reservoirs throughout the region, some offering year-round fishing opportunities for those willing to brave any climate. For those who find themselves in the area when it’s a little cooler outside, or need a break from the summer heat, take your adventure indoors to check out one of Elko’s wonderful museums celebrating the heritage and culture of the region.

Celebrate your catch, quench your thirst and satiate your hunger at one of Elko’s many restaurants and watering holes, where you’ll inevitably encounter a local ready to share their stories and raise a glass to the great times to be had in northeastern Nevada’s great outdoors. There’s something incredibly alluring about the darkness of a cave. The open stone mouth, beckoning you down into its twists and loops, inviting you to explore. There are caves all across the country that are ripe for the exploring – in fact, every state has at least one cavern (a cave with the ability to grow mineral structures like stalactites) except for Rhode Island and Louisiana! We, your intrepid team at Adventure Outdoors, have highlighted a few of the most popular ones – read on and ignite your thirst for an underground adventure!

SD

WIND CAVE

South Dakota is best known for the soaring carved rock sculpture known as Mount Rushmore. However, more incredible formations lie beneath the surface. Wind Cave is widely known as one of the top cave destinations in America. Its sloping walls and gorgeous caverns contain incredible rock and mineral formations, including the rare boxwork formation – a

delicate, almost lacy structure that looks like honeycomb. The natural park that contains Wind Cave is also home to a myriad of gorgeous local animals, like bison, elk, and the black-footed ferret. Inside the caves you might be lucky enough to spot one of several species of bats that frequent the cool darkness. Feel free to pitch your tent at one of the campsites in the national park and hike around, descending into the cave to marvel at its wonders.

VA

LURAY CAVERNS

Virginia is home to the largest caverns in the eastern United States, a series of massive rooms that will take your breath away. Luray Caverns is sometimes referred to as the Geology Hall of Fame due to its natural wonders and fantastic formations. This cavern system has lighted and paved walkways, and now has an accessible step-free entrance for those who need it.

CAVERNS CAVES &

Notable landmarks in this system include Dream Lake, the largest body of water in the caverns. Only 20 inches at its deepest, this crystal clear and completely still water creates a mirror image of the stalactites that hang from the ceiling above, producing a dizzying optical illusion. Another spot you don’t want to miss is Titania’s

It’s a great place to escape the summer heat, as it’s a cool 60 degrees year round. You can witness the incredible LED light show on a guided tour of this cave system – along with beautiful lights, the song God Bless America is played and a series of images dedicated to the brave men and women fighting for our country’s freedom is displayed. Also on the guided tour you will get to see one of the rarest cave formations, the Wine Table – a clustered formation that looks like bunches of grapes, with three legs that extend down to the cave floor. Don’t miss it!

Even in a well-lit, well-marked cave, there will always be an element of risk to exploring underground. Follow any local rules there may be and stay safe! There are some general guidelines that will help keep you alive and exploring for many years to come. When moving through a cave, take care! Do not run or jump. While unlikely, it is always possible you might disturb or break an area of wall or floor, and that could land you in trouble – both with your physical safety and with local law enforcement. Also, never go caving alone! Recommended caving groups are a minimum of four peo-

A responsible adult should always know your estimated itinerary, and if you have not returned within four to six hours of your designated return time someone should call the authorities. That way in case the worst happens, someone on the outside is looking out for you. Stay safe and happy caving!

This region is home to 60,000 acres of public land where the star of the show is Mother Nature. Also in 1598, the San Miguel Mission (one of the oldest churches in the country) was founded. When New Mexico became a U.S. territory in 1848, the region saw some relief as the military established a series of forts for protection. In Socorro County, the Army established Fort Conrad in 1851, and then later relocated to the newly-built Fort Craig in 1854. In 1889, Socorro, with her mines, mills and smelters, became the center of mining activity. As a result, the government’s new School of Mines (now New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology), opened in Socorro in 1893.

SURVIVAL&SAFETY WILDERNESS DANGERS AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

When

adventuring outdoors, you

always have to be on high alert – danger lurks around every corner, and vigilance is key. hen adventuring outdoors, you always have to be on high alert – danger lurks around every corner, and vigilance is key. We are here to help! Below we discuss some of the most common threats you might face on a day in the woods or in the wild, and how best to mitigate their danger. Staying alert will keep you safe and having fun for years to come. Any time spent near a river or body of water means you need to stay vigilant and safe. Not just because of the danger of drowning, but because of the danger of flash flooding. It is important to stay aware of any flood watches or warnings in your area. A watch means that flooding is possible, and a warning means that flooding is already happening or will happen soon. Either way, make your way to higher ground immediately. Do not attempt to cross a flooded road or stream on foot – the currents are often stronger than they appear, and it takes much less water than anticipated to knock an adult over. If you are swept into the current, point your feet downstream and always go over obstacles instead of under to avoid any risk of getting trapped underwater. Stay calm and try to grab onto anything that might pull you to the side of the flooded area. If you end up stranded above floodwaters, stay put and wait for rescue – do not enter the floodwaters and put yourself in more danger. Listen to official warnings and stay aware! When you are on a camping trip, one thing you need to plan for is how to stay safe from bears. Store all of your food in airtight and bear-proof containers, hanging these containers and other items with strong smells in trees out of reach of bears if available. Keep your campsite clean of garbage to avoid attracting curious bears. When out hiking, make your presence known to avoid surprising a bear. If you do encounter a bear, stay calm and give it plenty of room. If a bear seems threatened by you, back away slowly. Do not run! The bear will give chase, and they are much faster than you. It is highly important to know what kind of bear you are encountering – a grizzly bear attack is treated differently from a black bear attack. With grizzlies you play dead and stay still. With black bears, you move around loudly and fight back. Please research local wildlife thoroughly before going on your adventure.

Whenever you step off the beaten path and into the greenery of America, you are putting yourself at risk for running into poison ivy. This common little vine causes a big reaction in many people – itching, blisters, and swelling are the most common signs. The best way to deal with poison ivy is to avoid it entirely – there’s an old saying: “leaves of three, let them be!” This is because poison ivy has three leaves – a stem with a larger leaf at the end, and two smaller leaves shooting off the sides. The leaves have pointed tips, and are reddish in the spring, green in the summer, and yellow-orange in the fall. If you do run afoul of poison ivy, don’t panic. You can treat it with a corticosteroid cream, calamine lotion, an oral antihistamine, and oatmeal baths to relieve the itching. If the swelling is severe and the itching is not relieved by the above methods, go see your doctor for further treatment. We don’t want to scare you away from adventures – far from it! We just want to make sure you are prepared for any eventuality so you have the best and safest trip possible.

bass> If you’ve ever triumphantly looked a bass in the eye while it dangles from your hook, mouth gaping, then you know what a rush it is to nab one of these huge fish. There are few tips and techniques you can use to make sure you increase your odds of success. Bass love cover, so search for an area in the water that provides it – a dock, or some plant growth. If the day is cloudy the fish will be more active and willing to pursue feed rather than wait for it, so the fishing is better. Water temperature also affects how bass move and react to lures – slower moving baits in cooler water and aggressive faster lures in warmer water will help you succeed.

Looking for a great fall bass fishing destination? Head down to the Sunshine State and spend some time fishing on Lake Okeechobee. You can hire a knowledgeable local guide and a boat or set off on your own adventure – either way, you’re bound to find something worth waiting for. The walleye is considered to be a quite palatable freshwater fish. Often served as a sandwich in Minnesota's pubs, deep fried walleye on a stick is a Minnesota State Fair food. salmon

Salmon is considered to be healthy due to the fish's high protein, high omega-3 fatty acids, and high vitamin D[97] content.

salmon> There is no tastier fish than the salmon. Flaky, moist, and delicious, it tastes all the better if you catch it for yourself. When fishing for salmon, there are several steps you need to take to increase your odds of success. These fish have a notoriously thick jawline, so make sure your hook is sharp enough to pierce through their thick skin and

ensure you catch what’s biting. Add something flashy to your bait – a little sparkle will help catch the eye of a salmon making its way through low-lit and dark waters. If you make your way to a river to fish, try drifting – cast your bait upstream and let it slowly float down to the salmon area. This is supposed to make the bait look more realistic, but who really knows what’s going on in the mind of a fish.

You can find schools of salmon and so much more on the California Delta. This massive river delta is home to a host of flora and fauna, including some prime fishing. By boat or on shore, there are a multitude of places for you to cast your line. And once you’re finished fishing, you can pursue some hunting or explore local towns and try some fantastic cuisine – maybe even some fresh-caught fish!

WALLEYE> Want to catch something that can bite you back? Seek out a walleye for the thrill of a fine catch with an extra soupçon of danger if you don’t hold them correctly. To catch one of these bad boys, it’s all about location! Rocky points and sand bars will often attract walleye who use them to move from deeper to shallow water. Sand and mud flats attract the walleye’s prey, which makes it a good place to find the toothy fish. Dawn and dusk are great times to seek these fish, and choppy waves encourage walleye activity as well. Finally, make sure you use a fishing technique that matches the conditions you find yourself in. If the walleye are wallowing on the bottom of the lake, then jigging is a dependable method – put a worm on your jig and lift it up and down slowly, touching the floor each time. You’ll catch some attention, for sure.

Walleye can be found all over, but a prime spot for these fish is the Chatfield Reservoir in Colorado. Just outside of Denver, this 1500 acre lake is ideal for shore fishing and boat fishing. Several portions of the lake are “no wake zones”, and that helps keep from scaring away the fish. The lake is also surrounded by hiking trails, campgrounds, and other outdoor fun for the whole family.

Lake Ontario may be one of the smaller of the five Great Lakes, but proudly boasts the world record for largest Coho salmon caught on record, weighing 33 pounds, 7 ounces. Chinook salmon- commonly called ‘Kings’, are arguably the most sought-after and highly desired by charters – and we’ve got them! Steelhead are a rainbow trout with the same migratory patterns as the salmon species. Also find brown trout, lake trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass, as well as brook trout. The whole family can enjoy LOC Derby fishing competitions in Spring, Summer and Fall. Little Sodus Bay in Fair Haven along Lake Ontario has a wealth of fishing opportunities and services. Find most of your charters in this area. This little slice of heaven is known for brown trout, bullhead, yellow perch, smallmouth and largemouth bass. Even ice fishing is possible due to the shallower waters – you’ll catch northern pike and yellow perch. While visiting Fair Haven Beach State Park, venture to Sterling Creek for steelhead. For a more intimate experience, consider our smaller lakes, rivers and streams. Cross Lake has a unique blend of species with the Seneca River flowing through the lake. Reel in tiger musky, sizeable white perch, and walleye- especially in the Seneca River and at Jack’s Reef.

Common prey species include white perch, yellow perch, and Gizzard Shad, so choose baits that resemble these varieties for the greatest success. Also find large Northern pike, often in the impressive fifteen-pound range. Do not forget common carp and channel catfish, which are both large and abundant. Fly fishing, anyone? Dresserville Creek near Moravia is a tributary to the Owasco Inlet that offers 4.3 miles of public fishing rights through an easement plan with landowners. Here you will encounter wild brown trout, brook trout, and rainbow trout. If species and age diversity is what you seek, try the Owasco Inlet featuring stocked and wild trout and lake run fish from this and previous years. This is a common spawning ground for a variety of trout species.

: DEVILS LAKE, ND

A

merica’s duck factory is even better this season,” said 32-year veteran duck hunting guide Kyle Blanchfield. He was referring to Devils Lake, North Dakota, tucked amongst the prairie pothole region where spring waterfowl surveys showed duck populations up 20 percent. He said Devils Lake has been a “go to” waterfowl hotspot since pioneer days. “This is a historic region for ducks and geese, and until recently was known more for waterfowl than fishing,” Blanchfield said. He owns Woodland Resort, caters to duck hunters and fishermen year round, and loves to hunt. Devils Lake also receives a major boost from all the Manitoba and Saskatchewan waterfowl. “It’s been wet up there and the migrating flocks always come through here,” he said. “October and November are one of the greatest times to be here. Hunters head out in the mornings and fish in the afternoons. There’s nothing better for social distancing than being outdoors.”

ICE FISHING KICKS INTO HIGH GEAR ON DEC. 15 AND RUNS THROUGH MARCH.

Based on last year, he had a one word answer about the perch action this winter, “GREAT!!” Walleyes will provide bonus action early and late every day. “The walleye numbers are the best in recent memory,” he said.

Zippy Dahl, owner of the Perch Patrol guide service agrees. He loves fall fishing saying, “The walleyes are fattening up; they’re hungry; and any tactic will catch them. My personal best, 12.5 pounds, came in the fall.”

The Perch Patrol operates everyday with 11 guides locating and directing clients to the best spots. They provide all the tackle, heaters, CLAM shelters and electronics. They reach the fish in their tracked vehicles. Their open dates and packages are featured at perchpatrol.com.

His favorite season follows. Ice fishing kicks into high gear on Dec. 15 and runs through March.
