Top Fashion Trends for Spring and Summer 2015

Chunky jewels add impact to any outfit, even a simple t-shirt and jeans. The trick: don’t overdo it. If you’re already sporting a bold necklace, go easy on your earrings. The piece should make people “see” the whole person, not just the accessories. GET YOUR CHIFFON ON HORIZONTAL STRIPES Contrary to popular belief, horizontal stripes can be slimming. Certain areas of the body, such as the tummy, hips or backside, tend to stretch fabric outward. But with a horizontal stripe, the pattern doesn’t distort when stretched. Stripes can also minimize a larger bust by creating a diversion for the eye. Wide or narrow, stripes are youthful, fun and a big trend this season. THE SUMMER SCARF

Similar to a statementpiece necklace or bag, a great scarf can showcase your personality this summer. It can turn dull to fabulous in a flash and doesn’t require a big investment. Scarves bring femininity to structured shapes, add coverage to bust lines and add a pop of colour to neutrals. Fringes are popular this summer, so try one with this detail. OPEN TOE BOOTIE Open-toe booties and shoes add an edge to everything from skirts and dresses to skinny jeans. Compared to closed-toe booties, these create a slimming effect on the legs. If your legs are muscular, wear footwear with thicker heels. If you have thinner legs with dainty ankles, slim heels are your best bet. BOYFRIEND JEANS

The “boyfriends” of today have a fairly fitted backsisde and thigh, but are looser in the knee and calf and look best with a rolled cuff. The trick is to make sure you find the correct fit and pair them with an appropriate heel for your height and shape. (We can help!) Boyfriend jeans

STYLE

Chiffon is ultra feminine and flowy, and yet in solid colours it can feel more classic if you’re not the girly type. Chiffon skims the body, concealing those parts we prefer to be less noticeable. Choose the correct fit and style of bottoms to pair (a slim cut is typically best) and make sure the top has enough room and give, as anything binding will be uncomfortable and may rip. If you have steered away from chiffon in the past, give it another try. You will be surprised how far this misunderstood fabric has come. THE PATTERNED PANT The most flattering way to try this trend is with a skinny cut pant, worn with heels or wedges. Flats and sandals will also work, as long as your legs aren’t too short. Solid colours and slimming silhouette tops will complement bold pants. If patterns aren’t your style, try bottoms with subtle details, like tiny polka dots or small checks. Always pair printed leggings with a tunic that covers your behind. But most of all be confident in your choice — own it.

COMBINING COMMUNITY & COUTURE: 2015 Saskatoon Fashion & Design Festival Presented by ESYXE Real Estate Group By Tonya Lambert Photos Erin Crooks Photography

I

n 2012, Mandy Pravda and Jacqueline Conway, two local marketing gurus and fashion lovers, brought together a group of like-minded women to promote the local fashion industry and encourage collaboration amongst its members. The result was the Saskatoon Fashion & Design Festival (SFDF) presented by ESYXE Real Estate Group. Now in its fourth year, the three-day festival has become a much anticipated event in the city. “I love being part of SFDF,” exclaims Rea Harbus of Amaranth Designs. “SFDF allows me to showcase my line to a new group of people to whom I otherwise wouldn’t be able. Saskatoon has a great appreciation of the arts and support for Saskatchewan entrepreneurs.” The SFDF team, whose members this year include Chantal Hounjet, Lauren Martell, Nicole Romanoff, Kate Matthews, Erin Crooks, Claire Underhill, Abbey Hamilton, Trianna Palidwor, Tara Martin and Laura Langen, have worked hard to organize a stellar line-up of fashion and fun-filled events for 2015. Matthews, SFDF team member and stylist, says the experience has been enjoyable. “It’s a pleasure working with a group of passionate, intelligent, hard-working women who genuinely care about developing the fashion community in our city.”

Fabricating Fashion in Saskatchewan Trend setting, affordable, unique, versatile, authentic, vibrant — these are words to describe the local fashion industry. “I’ve worked in fashion in many cities and there’s just something really special about our community here,” explains Matthews, who along with Conway, served as creative director and stylist for the 2015 campaign. “Because of the size of our city and the friendly nature of the people, the culture within our fashion community is quite supportive and collaborative. We genuinely want to see each other succeed and that support and encouragement is very powerful.” Alissa Ramage, owner of Oneiro Designs, agrees. “It is such a supportive province and, as opposed to making it a competition,

designers, artists and business owners have come together to collaborate and help each other out.” Matthews continues, “The fashion scene in Saskatoon is the strongest it’s ever been, thanks to the many talented people who work to grow and support the industry. It’s vibrant and growing like the city itself. People here are very independent when it comes to style — we march to the beat of our own drum. We keep up with what’s going on in the global fashion scene, but we’re not overly concerned with what everyone else is doing and we’re not obsessed with following trends. We wear what works for us — and that to me is true style.”

Relaxed Elegance The colours and camaraderie of the images in the 2015 Look Book celebrate the community and its couture, a style described as “relaxed elegance.” Its colourful clothes and accessories recall happy days and nights exploring the stunning local landscapes with family and friends, bequeathing to the viewer a sense of awe and hope.

“I feel more creative and inspired when I am based in the prairies and close to nature,” explains Alora Arnold of Artifacts Jewelry. “I moved back to Saskatoon after I graduated from Ryerson University in Toronto because I feel a strong connection to my home soil and am able to design and let my creativity flow better when I am at home on the prairies.”

2015 Schedule of Events (June 5-7) Get ready to enjoy a weekend of fun, friends and fashion. The 2015 SFDF kicks off with a red carpet party on the evening of June 5th. With its deconstructed fashion show, show-stopping visuals and innovative fashion, this will be an event unlike anything ever produced in Saskatoon. The next day, SFDF and Midtown Plaza join forces in an afternoon fashion show as well as a style workshop hosted by a Angles SalonSpa and La Biosthetique, campaign and festival stylists. This will be followed by another entertaining evening of enjoyable elegance at the James Hotel. The weekend is capped off with a fun-filled afternoon at River Landing complete with

a fashion show and marketplace, food vendors, art display, give-aways, musicians, dancers and a photo booth courtesy of key sponsor Mercedes-Benz of Saskatoon. “The Pose runway show and market, held at River Landing, are my favourite parts of SFDF,” says Arnold. “Viewing the amazing work of our design industry while having the South Saskatchewan River as the backdrop instills how amazing our city and province are.” “I enjoy the thought and details that go into the various events,” states Hounjet. “The production is very well put together. I love the dance and aerial components that have been incorporated into the fashion shows along with the visuals and music! The local designers that SFDF is able to showcase through these events are all so talented and I look forward to each look they present on the runway.”

“independent stores are set apart by the customer service,” says Cori Molloy, owner of Olson + Burke. “everyone knows that, but it’s so true. The difference between shopping online and shopping at an independently owned boutique is the customer service; having the feedback and help to find something that works best for you.”

olloy opened Olson + Burke in Saskatoon last September, a boutique featuring a carefully curated selection of women’s clothing and jewellery, including many lines exclusive to her store. With a welcoming atmosphere and unique items, Molloy hopes to provide a comfortable place for women to shop for items that may be outside of their usual comfort zone.

22

STYLE

FineLifestyles

Saskatoon

“I want people to know they can come in here and feel comfortable trying something new,” says Molloy. “I’m not going to try to sell them anything they don’t want. This is a place where people can come and try something a bit different, and receive honest feedback so they can leave with something they can feel good wearing.” With summer approaching, the upcoming trends include wearing white on white, distressed denim and sleeveless blazers. Molloy can help customers figure out the best way to wear these new styles while feeling comfortable and confident.

“My role as a boutique owner is to help my customers navigate each season’s new looks and help them find ways to go back and update what they already have as well,” she says. “Instead of buying the same things over and over again, at a boutique you can get advice on new ways to wear what you already have and change up your look without having to replace your entire wardrobe. As I get to know my customers, I can help them more and more. It’s a real partnership.” Recognizing some of the excellent Canadian talent out there right now, Molloy likes to stock Canadian designers in her store, including Jenny Bird, Dean

Davidson and Wolf Circus jewellery, which includes the pretty but edgy Creatures of Desire line. She also stocks clothing from Pink Tartan, Smythe, Maison Marie Saint Pierre, Erin Kleinberg, and even local designer Rebecca King. Molloy’s style sense is recognized beyond her retail location, appearing in a television segment called Style in 60 on Global TV, which airs every second Wednesday morning at 7:45 a.m. Style in 60 gives Molloy the chance to provide advice to women on how to navigate each season’s biggest fashion trends, while answering some of their fashion questions. “I would love to hear from

or more than 40 years, Manolo Blahnik has been designing sophisticated shoes that are a synthesis of creativity and comfort rarely found in fashionable footwear. Largely responsible for bringing bringing stilettos back into fashion during the platform days of the 1970s, Manolo Blahnik fabricated expensive but elegant shoes, which remained the exclusive knowledge of an elite group of European consumers until the 1990s. Then frequent mention of the coveted footwear on the British comedic sitcom Absolutely Fabulous (1992-2012) and the American television series Sex and the City (1998-2004) brought the now iconic brand to the attention of women all over the world.

MANOLO BLAHNIK

In 1970, the fledgling designer and avid film fanatic was encouraged by American Vogue editor Diana Vreeland to concentrate his immense talents on fashioning footwear. With no formal training in shoe design or construction, Blahnik set out to learn all he could by watching and working alongside manufacturers. To this day, the always impeccably attired artist carves the prototypes for each of his shoes first by machine and then by hand with a chisel, making sure that the symmetry and balance are just right to achieve maximum comfort. According to Blahnik, a perfectly balanced stiletto enables the alignment of the ankles and hips, resulting in a graceful and attractive sway of the body. In addition to being remarkably comfortable, Blahnik’s shoes are known for their wonderful shapes, fearless use of colour and intricate embroidery, not to mention their incredible array of embellishments, ranging from the fun and quixotic to the elegant and refined. Over the years, Blahnik has collaborated with many well-known fashion designers, such as Oscar de la Renta and Christian Dior. Nevertheless, Blahnik himself is not a follower of fashion and does not keep abreast of current style trends. He believes that changes in fashion should evolve slowly rather than drastically each year. Manufactured in six factories in Italy, these pricey but pretty shoes and boots are available in more than 250 stores in 28 countries worldwide, including the firm’s flagship store on Old Church Street in the Chelsea district of London. Once described by Madonna as being ‘better than sex,’ the acquisition of a pair of these sophisticated shoes is the dream of many women the world over.

How can we make your shoe shopping experience easy, comfortable, and stress-free? At Brainsport, our shoe fitting specialists make a difference. HEALTH & WELLNESS

INTEGRATING ALLOPATHIC &

Complementary Medicines By Tonya Lambert

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a multibillion dollar industry in Canada. According to the Public Health Agency, 70 per cent of Canadians use some form of complementary or alternative health care therapies or natural remedies. These can range from taking vitamins, minerals or botanical products to various therapies such as acupuncture, reiki, reflexology, yoga, massage, chiropractic services or traditional Chinese and Aboriginal medicines.

28

FineLifestyles

Saskatoon

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Medicine at the University of Toronto, explains, “Just because a scientific study has not been done on a particular type of complementary medicine does not mean it isn’t effective. Some complementary therapies have been practiced for centuries and there is strong historical and experiential data that supports their effectiveness in some individuals.” Also, some scientifically proven forms of Western medicine have later been found to be harmful, such as synthetic hormone replacement therapy. In Canada, all medical research is funded by the Canadian Institute for Health Research, meaning research into alternative and allopathic medicines are competing for the same dollars. This combined with funding guidelines based largely on the Western allopathic paradigm, makes it difficult for CAM researchers to obtain the necessary funding. Nevertheless, randomized clinical trials of complementary medicines are increasing in Canada and other countries. Several studies have proven the efficacy of various complementary therapies which have then been adopted by Western physicians.

M

ost CAM treats the entire person and not just the physical body, as Western allopathic medicine does. This whole person approach is appealing to many people, particularly middle-aged women, highly educated individuals, people with higher incomes and those who suffer from a chronic illness. Most complementary health care is not covered by provincial health insurance. However, some provinces do cover chiropractic services. Otherwise, people have to pay out-of-pocket or use private insurance or employee health benefits to cover the costs. Most Canadians who use CAM do so in conjunction with Western allopathic

medicine. All medical providers should be informed of all the drugs and natural remedies a patient is taking to avoid any adverse reactions caused by the way these substances alter your physiology. There is a growing recognition in the Canadian medical community of the value of complementary therapies. In recent years, there has been a surge in the number of physicians who have either acquired training in one or more forms of complementary medicine or are working alongside complementary medical practitioners. Some people doubt the efficacy of CAM citing a lack of scientific evidence. However, as Lyndia Balneaves, PhD, director of the Centre for Integrative

HEALTH & WELLNESS

The federal and provincial governments are increasingly regulating CAM. The federal government’s The Natural and NonPrescription Health Products Directorate regulates natural health products to ensure their safety and quality. Regulated products are given a NPM number. Also, the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health publishes online reviews on the effectiveness of various types of therapies. The Ontario government regulates both naturopathic doctors and practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine. B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba also regulate naturopathic doctors, who must obtain a pre-med undergraduate degree and then take a four-year naturopathic medical program. Finally, they must pass both provincial and North American standardized exams. Regardless of the type of health care you use, Balneaves says you still need a solid foundation formed from exercise, a healthy diet and good stress management.

hen Tiger Woods had to withdraw from his latest tournament at Torrey Pines due to back injury, he indicated that he “couldn’t fire his glutes.” This is a common condition among athletes and lay people alike. Sometimes it is part of something called “crossed-pelvis syndrome.” First proposed by Dr. Vladimer Janda, crossed-pelvis syndrome results in over activation of the lower back musculature

and the hamstrings accompanied by under-activation of the gluteus maximus (buttock muscles) and abdominals. The resulting complication of this syndrome is improper movement patterning for lower body activities such as climbing stairs and standing up from sitting and increasingly difficult activities such as sprinting, jumping and golf. In conjunction with my last column in Fine Lifestyles regarding core exercises, proper gluteal activation with a strong core is key to proper pain-free motion in the lay population and high performance motion in advanced athletics. People are surprised when I give them exercises based on research that has been done on high performance athletes, but as Dr. Stuart McGill notes, research on Formula 1 race cars has led to many changes in regular automobiles. Thus, what works for a high level athlete can promote great results in the lay person as well. Some exercises that are helpful for gluteal activation include the side clamshell, the bridge (one or two-legged) and the airplane (this one is more so for athletes). These exercises are useful precursors in order to enhance gluteal firing prior to doing squats (with weights for athletes or weekend warriors), or just simply rising from a chair for the elderly.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

THE SIdE CLamSHELL (ImaGE 1) The patient lies on his or her side with an exercise band around the knees. Imagine that the heels are glued together. Brace the core so there is no movement of the pelvis and lift the knee up as high as possible against the resistance. This will engage the posterior aspect of the gluteus medius which is an important stabilizer of the hip. Fatigue should be felt in the back pocket region. Repetitions can be between 10 and 20 and do three sets. Note: this exercise can initially be done without resistance. THE GLUTEaL BRIdGE (ImaGE 2,3) With this exercise, the attempt is to utilize the gluteals exclusively as hip extensors and avoid contracting the hamstrings (especially in the case of crossed-pelvis syndrome where the hamstrings are typically contracting excessively). The patient lies on his or her back with the knees bent. Imagine that you are squeezing a loonie between your buttocks and after initiating that contraction, lift the buttock up without engaging the hamstrings. The therapist will have to determine proper cuing to utilize in order to determine how to minimize hamstring contraction. Perform three sets of five to 10 repetitions. If this is too easy, the

patient can perform a one legged glute bridge (with no hamstring involvement) for three sets of five repetitions. THE GLUTE aIRpLanE (ImaGE 4,5)

2

This exercise has been utilized in sports rehabilitation for world champion long drive golfers and world champion mixed martial artists. It is the only glute exercise that engages the entirety of the upper and lower gluteus maximus in one movement. It is great for active hip mobility, flexibility and for gluteal firing. The patient hinges forward at the hip balancing on one leg with a braced core and the arms wide. The spine stays in a neutral position as the torso rotates on the hip to the floor. Come up toward the ceiling with a gluteal contraction maintaining a neutral spine. Power athletes can perform the upward motion with speed. Although there are many individuals with “gluteal amnesia, there may be other biomechanical difficulties that do not allow proper gluteal activation. If any problems occur, your physical therapist should be consulted.

Appreciating the Life We Live Photos Neek Photography

I

have seen sadness and grief at various extremes over the past 37 years. Day in and day out working at the funeral home ‘somewhat’ has helped me deal with the sadness and tears as a typical ‘day on the job’. As a funeral director, it is common that my work was not done at five everyday and having to work weekends and vacation days. I have often had to deal with the death of young children and babies, suicides, homicides, and the loss of mothers and fathers to their young families.

home life has improved and I practice better communication and listening skills. As I venture home at the end of the day, I keep in mind my energy level as it may be depleted from the passion exerted through my day. My awareness and keeping life in balance with fitness, relationships and diet, keeps me healthy in the ‘here and now.’ I encourage you to stay connected to family and close friends. They are the ‘windows to your soul’ and the ‘gateway to a real life.’ Surrender and be free today.

At times, people have asked me how I relate to this sadness and grief everyday. I realized early in my career that there is nothing I can do about their grief. I can observe, watch and help them. I tried not to take it on as my own. Showing empathy with kindness, generosity, understanding and patience as well a warm hug, caring eyes and a friendly smile. I do realize at times in my personal life that I have not been present in the now. For me to be in the present takes energy on staying focused, trying to disengage from work emotionally and mentally. As a funeral director, I help families plan a funeral or memorial — ‘an event to say goodbye’. I realized when I did this everyday I was planning and living with the family for the future. I felt at times in my personal life I missed the boat on the important things by not living for today.

Today… each of us are busy… chasing opportunities to make a better living, either shift work or contract work, and sports activities with kids/grandkids, we just don’t have enough hours in the day.

I have learnt recently that staying connected to the ‘here and now’ that my

Today… we have the demands of lifestyles to keep our minds cluttered, multi-tasking every facet and corner of our life. Not paying attention to the ‘here and now.’ Today… our society has moved away from church, exercise, social visits, family dinners, card playing, and dancing, to an isolated world we live in. Today… our stress levels are peaking and we choose to turn to multimedia, TV series, video games, on-line shopping to untangle the life clutter that has consumed us in a negative way.

and care for their aging parents and grandparents. These baby-boomers are busy travelling, caring for their kids and grandkids, and aiming for or adjusting to retirement. When the parent or grandparent passes away they have left a message to the family. “When I die, I don’t want a funeral.” Most of the time this is said in haste and confusion as the lonely parent/grandparent has no visits or care to their level of satisfaction. Words can be justified by the family saying, “He (she) lived a good life,” or “All of his (her) friends are gone,” or “He (she) pushed people away.” These forefathers and foremothers lived through the Dirty Thirties and knew the importance of the simple things in life. Family times and social gatherings were at the forefront. In conclusion… we have all become detached to some degree as family and friends. I say this all of this not to judge but to offer solutions to make your life more meaningful. I want you to find the simple purpose in life and to give what you would want if you were that person. Life is short… make the best of it. OPPOSITE PAGE John Schachtel owner, and his wife Cindy.

It’s important to update your skin care regime with seasonal changes. I would suggest a heavier cream containing hyaluronic acid to encourage moisture retention, or a cream containing vitamin C (to be applied before bed) to lock in hydration and provide repair to dry or dehydrated skin. A light hydrating cream is great during the day, followed by sunscreen — even in the winter. Avoid creams or makeup with mineral oil that prevents the skin from breathing, or products that contain alcohol that will dry out your skin! he healthy benefits of massage therapy extend far beyond releasing muscle tension and relaxation. Monthly massages are important pillar to a holistic lifestyle for any age. Massage therapy has relaxing benefits on the body that can last for several days after the treatment. While massages are a well-known form of pampering because of their ability to relax the body and nervous system, many people may not know they decrease anxiety and depression. The treatment releases endorphins, which make you feel happy, and helps with pain relief and imbalance due to stress. Studies have shown that massages boost the production of white blood cells to help support a strong immune system. They increase brain function and alertness. They also help regulate blood pressure and promote oxygen and nutrients to tissues and vital organs. Respiratory issues can be controlled by training the body how to relax. Muscle spasms that lay over the sciatic nerve can also be reduced.

Massage therapy is a huge trend among adults but parents often forget about the various benefits to children, such as reducing stress from school. They also help children sleep better by the release of serotonin, especially while soothing growing pains during puberty. Mothers during and after pregnancy can reap the benefits of massage therapy by easing prenatal discomforts and decreasing body fluids and muscle soreness postpartum. The treatment can provide relief from pre-menstrual symptoms and improve posture. Physical ailments such as digestive disorders or allergies are greatly improved with massage therapy. Massages stimulate the movement of the digestive tract and help relieve allergy symptoms by producing histamines. Massages are more than a treat after an intense workout. They stretch muscle fibres, promote flexibility, and reduce lactic acid and metabolic waste in muscles that cause soreness. In the event of an injury, they can speed up recovery. Most important of all, massage therapy is enjoyable!

T

he Ultrasound Gallery is a medical diagnostic imaging clinic that has been open since January 2012. The Ultrasound Gallery is a comfortable, clean and modern office with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Top-of-the-line GE ultrasound equipment is found in each of the four scan rooms.

WHAT IS AN ULTRASOUND SCAN? An ultrasound scan is often referred to as a sonogram or ultrasonography. It is a type of medical imaging. High frequency sound waves are used to image soft tissues and fluid filled spaces. Ultrasound is an excellent modality for non-invasive, radiation-free imaging. HOW CAN I GET AN ULTRASOUND? A referral is made by a physician. The physician will fill out a requisition indicating the type of exam and reason for exam. An appointment is then needed. Call The Ultrasound Gallery at 306.979.6939 to reserve yours. Most people don’t know the requisition can be used to book an appointment at any ultrasound clinic, even if there is a specific ultrasound clinic name at the top of the requisition.

booking appointments within a few days, depending on the type of exam. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? In Saskatchewan ultrasound exams are covered by Saskatchewan Health Services. All valid health cards from Canadian provinces (except Quebec) cover the cost of an ultrasound. EXAMS • abdomen • pelvic • renal (bladder) • obstetrics • musculoskeletal (shoulder, elbow, wrist, knees, ankles, Achilles tendon) • scrotal • glands (thyroid, submandibular, parotid) • groin • muscle injury • venous leg doppler • soft tissue (any specific lumps felt on the body)

PROCEDURE Before the scan, a sonographer will ask pertinent questions regarding the reason for the exam. Warm gel is applied to the skin and a transducer that sends and receives sound waves is moved on the body. This produces a live image that can be frozen and an image stored. Most procedures take about 30 minutes to complete. A radiologist reads the images and makes a report. The results are sent to the ordering physician in approximately two working days.

TIPS There are different preparations depending on the type of exam. Call our office or consult the website if unsure about how to prepare for your visit. Please remember to bring your requisition and health card to the appointment.

The Midwest Laser Centre specializes in non-invasive cosmetic procedures such as Thermage CPT, Clear+Brilliant, Fraxel:Restore, Botox Cosmetic, Restylane, Juvederm, and Teosyal. The great benefit of non-surgical procedures is the minimal downtime. Most of the treatments offered by the center can be done without taking any time off work. Our experienced staff will guide you through the options and find a treatment plan that suits your needs and timelines.

Midwest Laser Centre will be the first clinic in Saskatchewan to offer the IntimaLase TM and IncontiLase TM; this is a laser vaginal tightening treatment that uses thermal heating to improve intimacy and stress urinary incontinence. The laser treatment performed by Dr. Stewart, has a photo thermal heating effect on collagen in both the vaginal walls and the urethra which causes restructuring and regrowth of the collagen. This results in thickening and tightening of the vaginal walls to improve atrophy and prevent urine loss. Seperation & Divorce: Parenting Apart With Integrity For couples going through this process, this is one of the most difficult and emotionally upsetting experiences. It can also bring some relief if after years of conflict and strife or silent unhappiness, you feel unburdened by not having to live like that anymore. More likely than not, you may experience a wide range of mixed emotions.

Barbara Morrison (L) MSW RSW Jennifer Schenn-Visentini (R) BSW RSW Morrison + Schenn-Visentini Broadway Counselling & Therapy Suite 201, 626 Broadway Avenue (Five Corners at Broadway & 12th) 306.653.3232 www.broadwaytherapy.ca

This is the second article of four in a series about creating healthy and respectful relationships.

W

hen couples decide to separate and divorce, there is a good possibility there is strife between the partners in the relationship. In a few rare instances, couples separate in a co-operative fashion.

42

FineLifestyles

Saskatoon

As therapists, we encourage couples to act from the best place in themselves by acting with integrity. By this we mean showing good character, acting with right speech and right actions – acting with decency and fairness. We know this can be difficult when emotions run high, especially anger, bitterness, disappointment and worry; however, behaving with integrity is not only best for the couple and any children, but for an entire community. A couple that has chosen to have children has the responsibility to parent regardless of whether they stay together, separate or divorce. The integrity each parent shows in their words and actions is critical to the well-being of the children. We all want children to be best they can be, to be respectful of differences and to be ethical in their relationships with others. When children see a counselor, they often express feeling stressed, anxious, confused, angry or powerless. It is important that children work through their feelings because unresolved issues can carry on into adulthood.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Having worked with children going through a separation and divorce, we can confidently state the number one variable in children’s adjustment is the quality of how both parents manage their own emotional feelings and their behavior. Communication should not be through the children. Email can be used to communicate and allows the discussion of specific issues. Children should not be placed “in the middle” where they may feel asked to mediate or resolve differences. Children’s time is important when decisions are being made regarding access and visitations. Being flexibile often means a lot to children (e.g. allowing a child to attend a special family function) and demonstrates that you are putting their interests ahead of yours. Speak respectfully of the other parent and of their extended family. Children see themselves as 50 per cent of each parent so criticizing the other parent negatively impacts a child’s sense of self. Details of the separation or divorce, new relationships, and other personal issues do not need to be shared with children as they can cause stress and worry. Acknowledge mistakes that you have made. Apologize and do the repair work needed to help rebuild trust and respect. Be there to listen to your children. You can help them to process their feelings and to adapt to their new family structure.

ema Autosport BMW is celebrating its silver anniversary. Since its inception 25 years ago, Bema Autosport BMW has set the standard amongst the residents of Saskatoon and Saskatchewan for premium level automotive products and services. The market has changed dramatically over this time, both in their favour and for the entire premium segment. Leslie Fenyes, retailer principal and owner, says, “We’ve watched BMW evolve from a highly niche marque to mainstream over the last few decades. In my opinion, the German brand is still considered the best built automobile in the world. It’s no longer unusual for a non-luxury brand to be priced into the $50,000 to $80,000 range. This adds significant value to the BMW brand in the consumers’ mind: well-built vehicles at reasonable downto-earth mainstream prices.” BMW has been a top selling premium brand in Canada for the last 20 years. When most people think about BMW, they think “Purely a driver’s car,” or “One of the most exciting vehicles to drive.” BMW customers are highly driven, vibrant, goal-oriented younger adults or young-at-heart baby boomers rewarding themselves after years of hard work; all are highly successful individuals who appreciate BMW’s high performance driving characteristics. It’s no wonder that BMW has long been a major sponsor of the Canadian and International Olympic teams. LEFT Leslie Fenyes, Retailer Principal/Owner

Virtually all the models outside of the Ms, as well as the X5M and the X6M, have optional xDrive (the most highly advanced all wheel drive systems anywhere).” It’s no question their business is wholeheartedly based on long-term customer relationships. Says Fenyes, “We are highly aware pricing is foremost on our customers’ minds and remain very competitive in this respect. However, when our customers purchase or lease a BMW, they demand a longterm premium level relationship and experience and we deliver this.” The BMW Aftersales Department is its most important asset. Fenyes says, “Historically speaking, it only takes a few minutes to sell a vehicle to our customers, but it takes years to service those same customers. Hence, the proof in the pudding is in aftersales. This focus represents the core of everything we

strive for: valuing our BMW customers. With this in mind, we are expanding our service facility extensively.” Stay tuned. The Team at Bema Autosport BMW have garnered a reputation for going the extra mile to assist their clients. An example is Bema Express Club Service, whereby customers can arrange beforehand to have their car looked after when they fly out of the airport. Upon departure, they drop the keys at a designated airport location. Their BMW is taken back to the store until their return, during which time it will be serviced and cleaned if requested. Then, it is returned to the airport for the client’s arrival. osting the popular television show, The Prairie Diner, has been a remarkable experience for comedian and actor, Jody Peters. He samples dozens of delicious dishes, learns creative new cooking techniques and meets many interesting people. Talking with Peters, I am immediately struck by his seemingly innate ability to make people feel at ease. I am captivated as I listen to his tales about the show,

52

laughing as he describes the strangest foods he has eaten (ducks’ feet and grasshoppers top the list). It is clear how his great sense of humour and personable nature have helped him to overcome challenges on the show, such as language barriers and strong personalities. I listen, enthralled, as Peters describes how he got the role as host of The Prairie Diner. “I was in Steinbach, Manitoba, visiting my sick father when I got the call to audition,” explains Peters. Then,

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

a blizzard struck and he wasn’t going to go, but his wife urged him. He hadn’t had an audition in a year-and-a-half due to unforeseen changes in the local film industry, so he braved the white-knuckle drive back to Saskatoon. “I arrived back in the city only 45 minutes before the audition and hadn’t had time to prepare. I stopped at home to change, thinking, ‘This is a good shirt to fail miserably in!’ ” Peters, who had never even watched a cooking show, was taken to The Summer

Peters. “You’d be hard-pressed to find people more passionate about what they do. They are generally down-to-earth people who eat, drink and breathe food. With their abstract, artistic personalities, they are always experimenting.”

Palace to film an audition/teaser. He remembers being nervous, his thoughts often drifting to his dying father. Thinking on his feet, he improvised questions and navigated the language barriers. He also had to eat pork intestines, a concern at first, but a tasty surprise in the end. I ask Peters what it is like working with the colourful characters that populate the show, which features three different eating establishments every episode. “Chefs are an interesting breed,” explains

I imagine that for the chefs it must be nerve-racking having a film crew in their kitchen. Peters observes, “Chefs are very confident when they are in their element, but the camera can be disconcerting; it’s my job to make them forget about the camera.” He chuckles, “I always let them know that editing is a beautiful thing.” I asked him how the Prairie food scene has changed since he was a young boy growing up on a Mennonite farm near Aberdeen. He chuckles, “It’s definitely not ’86 anymore!” He notes the influx of immigrants from around the world has

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

resulted in a rich diversity of restaurants in both the cities and small towns. “Any gaps that still exist are closing fast,” he adds. Another change is the emphasis being placed of food presentation. When I ask the reason for this, Peters explains, “Well, they say you eat with your eyes first, but that’s a very short meal for me. Let’s get to the mouth eating!” Does Peters have any advice for aspiring chefs? “There is pressure on chefs to follow trends… but don’t,” advises Peters. “Put your personality into your food; that’s what will set you apart. Chefs have strong personalities. As a chef, you should only make stuff that you like to eat.” Judging by the ample supply of palatepleasing restaurants in the city, our amazing array of chefs clearly agree, too.

n Ireland, the pub is the traditional heart of a community’s social life; in Saskatoon, Fionn MacCool’s Irish restaurant is quickly claiming a privileged spot in the hearts of many local residents. Pulsating with warmth and friendliness, it is the perfect place to rest your weary bones, revive your spirits and enjoy an evening of food, friends and fun. At Fionn MacCool’s, the craic — that wonderful blend of good food, good spirits and good cheer — embraces all who enter the establishment. The welcome begins the moment you set foot in the door with the rich, warm tones

of the wood décor. Making your way over to the gorgeous wood bar, you will be forgiven if you momentarily forget that you are in Saskatoon and not Dublin. The shelves are lined with an enviable selection of Irish whiskeys and scotch, and the taps pour forth a mouth-watering selection, from the finest Guinness to the best local craft beers. There are even a few varieties that are exclusive to the Saskatoon location of Fionn MacCool’s, such as Prairie Sun’s Irish Red and Kona Big Wave’s Gold Ale. Various drink specials occur throughout the week. Sample select craft beers on Craft Addict Thursdays for only $5.50

a pint while on Two-Fisted Fridays, two draft beers are only $11. On any night of the week, you can “Double Your Spirits” for just $2 extra or “Up Your Pint” to a 25oz. tankard for $1.50 on select beers. Fionn MacCool’s has several state-ofthe-art beer tables, each equipped with two taps from which you can pour your own pints. What could be better? It is so simple to use. Just get a beer button from your server and attach it to a tap whenever you want a drink. It records what you drink, making it easy to settle your tab at the end of the night.

Fionn MacCool’s is definitely the place to go for your favourite comfort foods. Though open less than a year, they have already been nominated in six categories in Best of Saskatoon Food & Drink 2015, including Friendliest Restaurant, Best After Work Drinks and Best Fish ‘n’ Chips. Made from scratch with the freshest ingredients, their flavourful foods include traditional Irish and Canadian pub fare, often with a unique twist. For example, their grilled cheese sandwiches are made with potato cakes, and instead of nachos, Fionn MacCool’s has Blarney Chips made with waffle-cut fries rather than tortilla chips. Particularly popular are the Tandoori Street Sandwich and the Steak and Mushroom or Tikka Boxty. They say that music is the soul of Ireland and this is certainly true of Fionn MacCool’s Irish pub. With a delightful mix of Celtic, blues and rock, you will happily be tapping your foot to the beat but the music won’t interfere with you having a conversation. The pub features live music on Thursdays and Fridays while a DJ provides lively dance music on Saturdays. So come down to Fionn MacCool’s — grab a glass of the good stuff, a hearty helping of your favourite foods and top it all off with some laughter and lively conversation. Fionn MacCool’s: not your typical pub! Watch for our Patio Launch this Spring.

Pinot, Please See Ya Later Ranch in the Okanagan has a perfect offering with its Pinot 3, a blend of Pinot Grigio, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. This wine produces a delightful tipple with apple, melon and peach aromas. The citrus notes match perfectly with the freshness of an herbaceous soup.

Ravishing Red There is no better evocation of spring than a smooth, spicy Côtes du Rhône, a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Always warm and welcoming, there are a number of wines from different producers available in both private stores and through SLGA.

the gRand Finale I love a fresh Riesling to go with a great dessert. For my tempura courgette flowers recipe, I recommend Kung Fu Girl from Charles Smith. This wine has fantastic minerality to bite through the oil in the tempura and enough sweetness to complement the ricotta.

Mike’s Pea souP

endive with Cheese

teMPura Courgette Flowers with riCotta Fruit Filling

In my collection of old school Saskatchewan cookbooks, I found what is now one of my most favourite recipes: pea soup. Here is my take on this classic bowl.

I may be eating out at too many steakhouses, but now that spring is here I am pining for something different to go with my grilled protein. Our friends from France just may have the answer!

Ingredients: 2 cups peas 3 cups cream 1 small onion, diced 1 stalk celery, diced 1 carrot, diced 1 cup white wine 3 cups chicken or vegetable stock Fresh coriander, parsley and mint 3 tbsp butter

Ingredients: 2 or 3 endive (chicory) Olive oil Blue cheese (stilton, gorgonzola or cambozola work well, too) Pepper

Method: Cook diced onion, carrot and celery in butter, stirring often, until onion is translucent. Add white wine and stock. Bring to a boil and add peas. Throw in a handful of herbs. After a few minutes remove from heat. Add cream. Cup by cup, pass soup through blender, or use immersion blender in saucepan and blend until smooth.

Method: Cut base of the endive to release leaves from the bulb stem. Place leaves onto a baking tray and drizzle with olive oil. Onto each leaf, spoon a good dollop of cheese. Bake for 15 minutes at 350F. Season with ground pepper and an extra drizzle of olive oil.

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

This is more of a summertime recipe, as flowering courgettes (zucchinis) and fresh, locally grown fruit are not abundant in our parts quite yet. Consider this a teaser for what’s to come. Ingredients: Baby courgettes with flowers Fruit (your choice, diced fine) Ricotta 1 cup sifted flour 1 tbsp cornstarch 1 1/2 cups very cold water 1 egg Pinch of salt Fresh mint Vegetable oil Maple syrup Method: Mix tempura batter by whisking together flour, cornstarch, water, egg and salt. Blend fruit, ricotta and mint to desired consistency. Gently fill flowers with just enough filling so you can pinch them closed. Coat flowers with tempura batter. Fill heavy-bottomed pan with two inches of vegetable oil. When oil is hot, carefully add flowers. When batter is golden brown, remove with slotted spoon and drain on kitchen towel. Place on platter and drizzle with maple syrup.

dd Couple is a hot, new Asian restaurant in the city’s revitalized Riversdale neighbourhood. Open for less than a year, it has already garnered a faithful following and an enviable reputation. Known for its elegant décor, flavourful food and attentive and friendly service, Odd Couple is the place on everyone’s lips these days.

Odd Couple offers an exceptional dining experience. The unique décor, modelled after the Hong Kong movie, In the Mood for Love, is full of shadows, rich textures and clean lines. Andy Yuen, who owns the restaurant, describes it as having “a 1960s Asian Mad Men feel.” Combine this with unparalleled service and you have a truly amazing ambiance.

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

Looking through Odd Couple’s menu, it’s clear a lot of thought went into its creation. The menu focuses on mouth-watering authentic Cantonese-influenced dishes, like tiger shrimp Shanghai, which uses Saskatoon-made noodles and Ocean Wise tiger prawns, or the maple Thai basil pork ribs, with ribs from Moose Jaw, Sask. All the dishes are made with only the freshest all-natural ingredients by their experienced

chefs. Imagine bacon fried rice prepared with delicious thick slices of cherrywood-smoked bacon glazed with Canadian maple syrup. The sweet and savoury taste is hard to say no to! The motto of Odd Couple is “Eat together.” In traditional Chinese culture, it’s important to share food and drinks within the table. The small menu is designed to include ample options for everyone with emphasis on quality over quantity. Seafood enthusiasts, meat lovers and vegans will all find several tasty dishes from which to choose. Ask your server for wine pairing suggestions: the wine list was compiled with the help of a local sommelier to include only those that go best with Asian foods. Also available are a few Asianinspired cocktails, such as the Grape Gatsby, which uses fresh grapes, Thai basil and Lucky Bastard vodka, or the Odd Fashioned, which has fresh mandarin orange juice and Knob Creek Bourbon. Odd Couple is now launching business catering. Everyone enjoys their own appetizing meal served in Asian take-away boxes accompanied by a sampler tray of small shareables and a selection of Asian fusion desserts, such as apple pie spring rolls and banana Nutella spring rolls. Your office will be looking forward to corporate meetings and the innovative dishes will be inspiring creative ideas! TOP Andy Yuen and Rachel Kong, owners.

Eric

Paet kau By Tonya Lambert Photos Electric Umbrella Images Inc.

I

recently had a chance to talk with Eric Paetkau, who will be taking over as the new music director for the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra (SSO) in September. Raised in Alberta and Saskatchewan, the 43-year-old has spent the past two decades honing his musical talents across North America and Europe. Known for his innovative ideas and collaborative approach, this Juno Award nominee’s musical credentials are impressive. Before delving into his plans for the SSO, I wanted to learn a bit about the man himself.

the violin, viola, piano, guitar, tuba and bassoon, though he hasn’t played the latter two for many years. This vast repertoire is a great benefit when conducting an orchestra. I asked Paetkau why he had switched to the viola, his main instrument, and what he liked about playing it. “Honestly I haven’t played all that much in the last few years,” he admitted. “But when I did, I loved the deep, rich sound of it. That’s the reason I switched to it from violin in the first place (and because of all of the viola jokes, of course).”

When asked what led him to the world of music as a child, Paetkau responded, “I had a very musical upbringing. My father sang and played cello, my mother played piano, and my brothers and I all played instruments. In the community where I grew up, there’s a huge choir tradition so that added a lot as well. I also took private lessons in violin and played in the Edmonton Youth Orchestra for a number of years.”

Paetkau is no stranger to Saskatoon; his grandma lived here and he has worked with the SSO on several occasions. I asked him what he liked best about the city. “The sun!” he exclaims. “It’s a beautiful city and even though it can get cold at times — which I actually don’t mind — the sun always makes everything better. I’ve also enjoyed the vibrant coffee shops and restaurants that seem to have sprung up everywhere in the last little while.”

Violin lessons? But I thought Paetkau played the viola. It turns out he plays

Paetkau and his wife Karen will be moving to Saskatoon this summer.

Tips & Tools for Quilting & Scrapbooking

Tammy Guliker Owner Prairie Chicks Quilting & Scrapbooking 110 Central St. East Warman 306.934.1972 prairiechicks@sasktel.net prairiechicksquiltingandscrapbooking.com

Tip: Be sure to purchase a trimmer that is at least 12 inches tall, as most of the scrapbooking papers available are 12” x 12”. Also, be sure the paper trimmer has ruler markings on it. This will make trimming pictures or coordinating papers easier. Scissors: Always have a standard pair of scissors on hand and make sure the blades are sharp, not dull. Tip: In addition, have a small pair of scissors with sharp tips to cut with precision the smallest of corners.

T

he springtime brings a sense of renewal and energy; it’s a great time to pick up a new hobby to enjoy in the sunny days to come. Getting started with a hobby is easy. All you need are a few specific tools. Both quilting and scrapbooking are fun and beginner-friendly activities for you to enjoy with friends or on your own. Below are some of those tools you’ll need, as well as some of my tips for getting started. ESSENTIAL TOOLS

SCRAPBOOKING

Paper Trimmer: There are many different brands and sizes on the market. Fiskars is always a good brand to purchase.

64

FineLifestyles

Saskatoon

Adhesive: There are many different kinds of adhesives available. It is best to have a variety of adhesive on hand, including: liquid glue for attaching embellishments, a strong double-sided tape and a basic tape runner, which dispenses little strips of adhesive. Tip: Be careful when buying adhesives at discount or dollar stores as over time these can discolour photos or lose their stickiness. ESSENTIAL QUILTING TOOLS Rotary Cutter: This tool is available in several different sizes, and the measurement given refers to the size of the blade. We recommend the 45 millimetre size or higher.

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

Tip: The 60 millimetre is the best if you are doing a lot of straight cutting. Acrylic Ruler: Rulers are available in many different shapes and sizes. Measurements are laid out in grid formation, making cutting fabric to the exact measurements needed a breeze. As you continue on with this new hobby, you will more than likely want to add rulers of different sizes and shapes to your collection. Tip: To begin with, for basic quilting, we suggest the 6” x 24” ruler. Cutting Mat: Mats also come in many different sizes. The 24” x 36” mat is a bit of investment; but you will find that if you buy smaller, you will want to upgrade. Buy the biggest mat you can afford. Tip: Be sure you purchase a name brand, good quality mat. A mat of low quality will dull the blade on your rotary cutter quite quickly. At Prairie Chicks, we have a large classroom space available to rent for groups of quilters and scrapbookers. Contact us if you would like to customize an event, and be sure to check out our class schedule on our website. We offer classes from September to May, and host many different special events.

Magic & Mystery OF THE

ANCIENT MAYA By K.A. Beattie Photos Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The Mayan civilization is for the most part associated with the spectacular circular calendar, astronomy and, we can’t forget, the sacrifices so embellished by Hollywood. T

he association of plants and spirituality as medicines in the Mayan culture was very strong and still exists to this day. There is a cultural reverence for ancestral knowledge and a deep appreciation for what Mother Nature continues to provide. A visit to a local market in Santo Tomas, Guatemala will reveal first hand what the local population considers “plant medicine.” Granted, there are a great many uncommon looking specimens, packages and bundles of strange foliage, roots and bark bits from peculiar trees, but all very familiar to the still vibrant Mayan population.

Mexico, Santo Tomas, Guatemala, Belize City, Belize and Puerto Limon, Costa Rica wove an intriguing cultural fabric, bringing to life the ancient Maya culture reflecting today’s society as well. Why Travel Insurance?

D

id you know that treating a case of swimmer’s ear in a foreign country can cost $600 to $700? Or that a hard fall while skiing could cost $1,400 in care? Or if you require surgery or have a stroke while travelling out of country it could run you over $100,000? As a Canadian traveller we are told to be well-prepared from your valid passport to your up-to-date inoculations. Whether you are a first timer or a seasoned snowbird, there is a wealth of information online in regards to travelling abroad

and protecting yourself. An informative website to refer to when preparing yourself for travel outside of Canada is travel.gc.ca. There are checklists and tips to ensure your vacation is what it is meant to be, stress-free and fun! There is even a free registration service to give you easy connection back home in case of emergency. Nothing compares to relaxing and unwinding during vacation. But what happens if you are not properly prepared and you get sick or injured?

Most people look at travel insurance as an option when it should be viewed as a necessity, like your passport. Just like getting your shots to protect against diseases in foreign countries, insurance should be a priority. With comprehensive travel insurance you are covered 24/7 from the high cost of medical care in other countries. Most travel insurance pays directly to the hospital or clinic so you don’t have to worry about paying these expenses out of your pocket. This saves you from a financial burden when returning home from an already stressful situation.

Never rely solely on your provincial plan to cover you as coverage is limited. Supplemental travel insurance ranges in cost depending what it is covering, your age and the benefits you choose. There are several companies that offer travel insurance with variations in the plan structure and costs. These options can be confusing. Make sure you ask questions to ensure you know what you are covered for. Pre-existing conditions may be covered if the condition is stable and controlled. It is essential to review your policy in detail and understand how the clauses will affect you and your pocket book. It is important to carry details of your medical insurance with you when you travel as well as leaving a copy with a friend or family member at home. Let us help protect you. If you would like to discuss your travel insurance needs or anything else regarding your personal

he roots of golf are often debated — some believe it originated in China, and others believe it came from Holland. However, it was the Scottish who created something that most resembles a modern golf game. A sport that captured the passion of Scots so greatly that in 1457 the game was banned along with football (or as we call it, soccer), to ensure the population would practice archery, which was a fundamental part of their defence. The law was of course repealed almost 50 years later, and in 1744, Edinburgh welcomed the world’s first golf club. For centuries, golf was considered a man’s game. Then, in the 1950s, women got their shot at professional golfing, rather than simply playing for fun. In Canada, golf has become a favoured sport during warmer weather and has even been enjoyed in the winter at some courses with somewhat looser rules. For some time now, golfing has been considered the perfect family sport. Though we aren’t all going to be pros like Tiger Woods, his ascent has spawned a much more active juniors’ league. It’s never too early to start teaching children golf — that is, as long as they can stand and hold a plastic club. Golf classes are regularly offered for children as young as five, and there are even tournaments for aspiring young golfers. Learning golf can increase motor skills, concentration, perseverance,

as well as teach important life skills, such as honesty, respect and cooperation — tools they will carry for the rest of their lives. A perfect way to start out with kids is by using a small putting green in the backyard, which will provide years of family fun.

it becomes increasingly difficult to develop new friendships. Joining a golf club gives people the opportunity to expand their social network. Friendships made at the golf course are not sealed by education or profession, but rather by a shared love of the game.

There are many benefits to playing golf. One of these is the ability to be a lifetime player; people can enjoy the sport from childhood all the way into their senior years. Players will also find health benefits, such as mood enhancement and stress reduction from being outdoors. Golfers gain valuable Vitamin D from the sun, which raises serotonin levels and improves immune function. On top of it all, walking a course is a great source of exercise with a low risk of injury — the perfect way to maintain fitness at any age.

Golfing can be a very competitive sport, pitting friends and family against each other, but the true challenge is bettering your own best scores. Golfing often teaches you humility; there you are with your flaws and personality on your sleeve

pushing to do better and full of hope for a better stroke and a better game. With 34 rules and a 210-page rules manual by the Royal Canadian Golf Association, the truest rule is to be fair and honest, guiding principles that are simple enough to remember and are beneficial in life. Golfing provides the perfect way to disconnect from a quick-paced world. Instead of corresponding with friends online, your friends are right there with you — loving every minute of it!

Often thought of as the best way to seal a business deal, golf is also great for networking and building lasting relationships. As we age,

Building everything from starter homes to the ultimate dream home, D&S Developments treats every home with the highest attention to detail. With a selection of single and multilevel home plans, Greenbryre Estates features large 1/2 and 3/4-acre lots that can easily accommodate a large garage and pool, something unheard of in the city. ith today’s modern lifestyle it is becoming harder to find the time to relax and enjoy leisure activities. Greenbryre Golf & Country Club is working with D&S Developments to create a one- of-a-kind golfing community, Greenbryre Estates. Perfectly combining modern amenities, this unique community allows residents to enjoy life to the fullest — just eight minutes from downtown Saskatoon.

This unique leisure lifestyle makes Greenbryre Estates the perfect place to build a dream home. Originally founded in 1979, Greenbryre Golf & Country Club has gone through a complete transformation as the centrepiece of the Greenbryre Estates development. Shifting from an 18-hole to 12-hole facility with an inward six and outward six holes allows the course to accommodate more modern lifestyles. “We have created a new course that is challenging and allows players to tailor their experience. The idea of a 12-hole course is very popular in the United States and has even been recommended by PGA Golf Professional Jack Nicklaus,” says Brad Vinnick, general manager of Greenbryre Golf & Country Club. This unique layout allows players to design their game depending on the time they have available to play. The reconfiguration included transplanting

more than 120 trees to create the new routing, developing a completely unique experience at each and every hole. The first course of its kind in Western Canada, Greenbryre Golf & Country Club was redesigned by well-known golf course architect Garth Keayes. This concept of playing six, 12 or 18 holes depending on a player’s schedule allows for shorter games, at a third of the time of a regular game, and more play overall. “Golf is an excellent family sport and it’s often difficult to get everyone out on the course together. These unique options allow players to fit a game in before or after work, during a busy weekend. Time is a valuable commodity in the modern world and we need to make the most of it,” says Vinnick. Another unique feature of the course is their aquatic practice range where players can perfect their golf swing. For those looking for a glass of wine and meal after a round of golf or a night out with friends, Greenbryre Golf & Country Club offers casual dining at 12 Grill. Rather than driving downtown, residents can enjoy a meal out in their own community with a stunning view of the course. Starting Saturdays in June, come experience the “6 for 66” package. Golfing couples can play six holes, then go to 12 Grill for a glass of champagne and choose from one of five evening dinner entrees for just $66 — a perfect evening out at Greenbryre Golf & Country Club. At Greenbryre Estates and Greenbryre Golf & Country Club, golf becomes a way of life. Enjoy the perfect balance of living and entertainment everyday at this unique community. Currently in its 11th year of business, this course has been winning awards since the beginning after being named best new course in its first year of business, drawing national attention to the region. With an inclusive environment, Dakota Dunes offers a beautiful course with options for beginners, juniors and families alike to enjoy a game. This year, Dakota Dunes is expanding its business with a new clubhouse scheduled to be completed by the end of the summer.

The two-level building will house the pro shop, meeting rooms and a restaurant with a gorgeous river valley view. In addition to the sit-down restaurant, the new clubhouse will have a deck, patio and dedicated grab-and-go counter.

Dakota Dunes is a great place to host corporate events and meetings that combine business with pleasure. For corporate guests, the course also offers unique business packages that combine advertising opportunities with golf.

“The new clubhouse will allow us to host more catering functions and special events,” says general manager McLaren Taylor. “Tournaments are a big part of our business, and the new clubhouse will give us an opportunity to do more catering right here at the course. We’ll also be able to host more of our own events, like member nights, couples nights and league nights.”

Designed by renowned golf course architect Graham Cooke, Dakota Dunes offers a beautiful landscape on which to play. “It’s a challenging world-class championship layout, but we do have five tee decks on every hole so there is yardage to suit anyone’s game,” says Taylor. As a destination course for people visiting Saskatoon, it has something to offer for enthusiasts and beginners alike.

The PGA Tour Canada is a proving ground for some of the best young golfers in the world. “It’s an event we’ve been hosting since 2008,” Taylor explains. “This is golf at an extremely high level. We’ve had players here in the past couple years that have gone straight to the Web.com tour or PGA tour, and it’s always exciting to watch those events and see players that were here just a few years ago.” With a true links-style course and conditions that are second to none, Dakota Dunes offers a unique experience. “Each hole is set apart from the others, so when you’re playing you feel like you’re the only one out there,” Taylor says. “The course flows as the land flows, so it’s a special Saskatchewan golfing experience.” With large greens, generous fairways and friendly staff, Dakota Dunes is enjoyable for anyone to play.

Tips from a Pro: Addressing the Fundamentals

o other sport is analysed quite like golf, and no sport offers as much in-depth instruction to the average participant. From video to 3D swing analysis, there is so much information to consider while perfecting your game. But at the risk of being boring, my advice relates to one of the basic fundamentals. The most common problem I see as a golf instructor is alignment. Alignment is all about feet, hips, shoulders and club face, and their relationship to the target. As part of my typical lesson, I ask my students to warm-up by hitting a few shots at a specific target. I use this time to check their fundamentals: grip, stance, posture and alignment. All of these things will affect the way you swing the club, and while it may sound simple, poor alignment is a very common mistake that can negatively affect your game. A golfer’s perspective on alignment is easily distorted, particularly after they have taken their stance and addressed the ball. In most cases players will overcompensate: right-handed golfers will aim too far right, while left-handed golfers will aim too far left. Without knowing it, their stance is “closed,”

80

FineLifestyles

Saskatoon

SPORTS, RECREATION & TRAVEL

which means their front foot is too far forward. They compensate by pulling the swing across their body, which may or may not produce accurate shots. To be more technical, the swing plane and the path of the club are affected, producing too much spin on the ball, which means it won’t go as far. It doesn’t need to be complicated: an error in fundamentals usually results in compensation. Swing plane, path and spin rates are interesting topics, but in order to fix them you need to start with the fundamentals: grip, stance, posture and alignment. One way to fix your alignment is by using a club or an aiming stick on the ground whenever you practice at the driving range. This will keep your alignment in check while you work on other things. A good routine also helps: start by standing behind the ball and pick out a spot just in front of it on your target line, and use this spot to help get your club lined up. Then arrange your feet according to the club. You could have someone stand behind you to check your alignment, or better yet, book a lesson to review all your fundamentals and you will see the results the next time you hit the links.

AMAZING GARAGES High-End Homes For Your High-End Vehicles

ake car collection company CEO Craig Jackson who built his Arizona home with a circular 3,600 sq. ft. garage. It displays his muscle and luxury car collection facing centre, like the spokes in a wheel. At the centre, a Bugatti Veyron rotates on a deserving pedestal. If you own a Bugatti, Ferarri, Lamborghini or McLaren, a climate-controlled “Garage Mahal” will definitely be on your wish list. For many car aficionados, the ideal garage shares the same elements as the man cave. Garages with wet bars, flat-screen televisions, fitness centres, woodworking shops and lounge areas to display autorelated memorabilia are becoming increasingly popular. Las Vegas native and Forty4 Asset Management CIO Francis Wisniewski put a small basketball court and gambling room — complete with a full-size craps table —in his 15,000 sq. ft. garage. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who famously collects Porsches, keeps them in an underground garage three blocks from his

home. The three-storey garage houses his 46 Porsches and features a clubroom with a billiard table, kitchenette and office. A New York penthouse apartment listed for sale comes with an “en suite sky garage” that allows for your car to be transported by elevator to your apartment and parked just outside your door. The idea of using a car lift, or elevator, has gone beyond space-challenged citydwellers. Car collectors who want to maximize garage space by stacking their vehicles also use them, as do those who prefer the attention stay focused on the garden, and not on their vehicle. Swiss company Cardok has created a bespoke parking solution to suit any home or vehicle. Installed under an existing driveway, cars disappear into a hole via a hydraulic ramp. A decorative roof fools passersby into thinking there’s no car parked at home and maintains the decorative appeal of your garden. It becomes impossible to vandalize or steal the car and you don’t have to worry about power-outages because every

HOUSE & HOME

installation comes with a small back-up generator. The same company offers the CarLift, which was developed to enable customers to access their basement garages utilizing a lift rather than a ramp. Turntables can also be provided within the basement garage to allow easier access to every underground parking space. In some scenarios, a garage is more valuable to a property when converted into living space. Some choose to transform their garages into extra bedrooms, home gyms or cinemas, while they move the car underground, as it’s more cost-effective than moving to a larger house. About 3.5 million Canadian homes have attached garages, according to a 2007 report on energy use by Natural Resources Canada, and a garage generally increases property values by approximately 64 per cent of its cost, depending on current markets. The kind of garage that suits you and your car perfectly will depend on budget, space and how you will enjoy your wheels best.

dding a custom touch to a car can get expensive. One of the simplest and most affordable options is often a tire and wheel package. It’s also a great choice for those looking for subtle changes that make a big difference. SeleCtion People do a lot of research online before coming in to see a tire and wheel specialist. This can mean they have already settled on the package they “need” without even knowing if it will suit their actual needs. The best way to narrow down a selection is by asking simple questions: What do I do with my vehicle? How do I need it to perform? There is much more to wheel selection than just the look. The right salesperson

When you walk up to a dealership you’ve got a few trim and colour options, but on the whole all people see is the colour and wheels. With limited dealer options it’s not unusual to see another car that’s the same make, model and even colour on a daily basis. The right wheels can make a car stand out. Car trends come and go quicker in the automotive industry than even the fashion industry. Every manufacturer has their own trends too. When constructing a new look for a vehicle it needs to be cohesive. Matte black wheels used to be king, but now we are seeing the introduction of matte colours like red and blue.

There is a common debate about which type of metal is stronger in wheel construction: aluminum alloy or steel. Wheels and tires are a vehicle’s only point of contact with the ground. If a driver hits some debris on the highway or pothole, the transfer of weight often bends, twists and cracks even the toughest metals. That’s why Kelvin’s Wheel offers full repair services. Drivers don’t have to replace their wheels every time an issue arises. Whether it’s a bent wheel or just chips and scratches in the finish, it pays to review the options. Everyone knows that a vehicle should have separate tires for winter and warm weather driving, but many people do the tire shuffle with one set of wheels. Warm weather can prematurely damage winter tires, but it’s not necessary to switch them off as soon as spring rolls around. Once the temperature has been

Denham Awnings has also been a strong supporter of the Man Shed since 2011. This year they have installed an automated roll away awning that’s designed to come off the side of the shed over an exterior TV and hot tub. “It’s a great project for a great cause and I really hope it continues. Spring TipS As the proverb says, “No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow.” For homeowners, springtime means time to freshen up the house and yard. But for some the task of reviving the home and yard can seem overwhelming or uninspired. Here are a few tips to get you started on your springtime revival.

2

90

1

Is the driveway a little drab these days? Does the pool deck need a facelift before the first BBQ party of the season? “Seek out sustainable products!” advises Kevin Hall from Shercom Industries Inc. “Our work creating rubber surfaces and products from recycled tires has taught us that it’s possible to offer a premium quality product that is affordable while adding superior long-term value and that make a positive impact on the future of our environment.”

3

Do you remember last summer swatting at the mosquitos as you tried relaxing on the patio? Local company, Phantom Screens, offers a solution: Phantom Retractable Screens. Keeping your home’s view, flow and function at top of mind, these customizable screens protect you from annoying insects, all while opening up your home to the fresh air of our all-too-short nice weather seasons. The result? More time outdoors, with the comfort of indoors.

Mother Earth greenhouses carries all the plants you need to adorn your yard. From the classic favourites to a unique new find, a garden facelift is exactly what you need this spring. Owner Patti Cunningham uses her “green-thumb” to help select the right plants for your space, ensuring you have a sanctuary to call your own.

Don’t spend another season cringing at your tired, dated floors. Rhonda Johannson and Dave Dazzan of Patina Floor & Décor carry an impressive selection of floor finishes — hardwood, engineered, vinyl, laminate and tile — that complement every style. The best part? The company only works with the most qualified installers, so each project is completed perfectly every time.

5

Homeowners crave the aesthetics and privacy of window coverings to protect their sanctuary. From trendy drapery to suit your home’s colour palette to the motorized window treatments that take you into the next century, Budget Blinds of Saskatoon has every solution to every problem you didn’t even know you had. Function and style are top of mind for Kim Lang as she consults with clients on individual projects.

7

Spring is a popular selling and moving time for homeowners. But there’s so much to do! Shawn Johnson of RE/MAX Saskatoon says, “For buyers, I recommend finding a good lender and getting pre-approved [for a mortgage]. Being educated and able to pull the trigger when they find the right home allows them to jump at the right opportunity.” And for sellers, Johnson advises, “Get the yard into shape as quickly as possible. Decluttering and staging can make a space look larger and allows a buyer to envision their own belongings when viewing the home.”

Nothing says spring like flowers and greenery, fresh or faux,” says Abby Milne, owner of Gallery 17, a local boutique offering premier home furnishings and décor. Milne advises, “Freshen your home this springtime with big statement leaves in fun vases.” Time to swap the neutral décor for something more lively and take advantage of the season’s revival trend!

Celebrating the Beauty of Creation By Tonya Lambert Photos courtesy of Mother Earth Greenhouse

I

t’s spring and the world is bursting with life, beauty and hope. Nowhere is this truer than at Mother Earth greenhouses near Clavet. Here, Patti Cunningham, her husband Don and their staff of seasoned gardeners have been busy digging in the soil and watching it spring forth with colourful new life. At Mother Earth, beauty abounds. In the eight greenhouses, you will find row upon row of vibrant blooms on a rich background of greens. They have a fantastic selection of plants in every shape and size imaginable: tall starter trees; bushy shrubs; lush, clinging vines; and fragrant flowers, both small and large. At Mother Earth, you will find not only the familiar favourites but also exciting

new finds. For example, at Gardenscape this year, they introduced the medinilla. This plant from the Philippines with its showy and incredibly long lasting blooms was an instant sensation. As well, Mother Earth carries haskap and sour cherry bushes, two berry plants developed at the University of Saskatchewan and perfect for the Prairies. They also grow over 50 varieties of tomatoes and 29 different types of other vegetables. Out in the farmyard, there’s a delightful menagerie. Children love the exotic birds and alpacas as well as the more familiar dogs, cat, turkeys and goats. Older visitors welcome the warm memories of growing up on a farm.

Need help picking out the perfect plant? No problem. The staff at Mother Earth has literally hundreds of years of combined experience and are always happy to help. “My daughter was getting married last August and I needed a vine to cover the trellis in our backyard,” explains June Wilson. “I asked the instructor in my university horticulture course for advice and he told me to go to Mother Earth. [He said,] ‘They have things no one else does.’ Patti at Mother Earth recommended a type of morning glory, assuring me that it would do the trick. The guests loved it! It was a hit! Patti’s my go-to girl now.” Of course, not everyone has the space for a traditional garden. However, container gardening makes it possible for ABOVE Photo Lisa Landrie

everyone to enjoy gorgeous blooms and fresh vegetables. At Mother Earth, they prepare a wide array of pots and hanging baskets, some filled with colourful flowers to beautify any space and other packed with vegetables or berries full of flavourful goodness. Come early and select the basket of your choice and then leave it at Mother Earth until the end of May when the weather is nice enough to put it on your patio or balcony. Have your own planter? Bring it to Mother Earth, and Patti and her staff will fill it with the plants of your choosing. Take a 10 minute drive to Mother Earth this spring. You will be glad you did. A trip to this greenhouse is a mini adventure with so many animals and plants to see. Just head east of the city on Highway 16. Turn right on Daisy Lane. When you cross the railway tracks, turn right again. Mother Earth is just down the road. Mother Earth: celebrating life.

Open up Your Living Space with Phantom Screens By Courtney Tait

W

ith summer on the horizon, Saskatchewan homeowners are looking forward to opening up their doors and windows, letting the breeze blow through and enjoying time on their patios after a long winter. But two aspects of summer can inhibit using your outdoor spaces to their full potential: pesky insects and the heat of the afternoon sun. While storm doors and window screens can assist in combatting

these issues when you’re inside, they detract from your views of the outdoors, and offer no protection when you’re on your patio. Fortunately, Canadian company Phantom Screens offers an innovative, stylish option that not only keeps the bugs and sun at bay, but can dramatically increase your home’s living space. The solution? Phantom Retractable Screens. These motorized screens merge your indoor and outdoor spaces, opening up your

home and extending the amount of time you can spend on your patio. Because Phantom Screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, they stay completely hidden when fully retracted. This provides optimal views, enhances the flow and function of your home and promotes the outdoor living experience. Phantom Screens offers three different product lines — for windows, doors and large openings such as covered

decks or garages. Each screen is fully customizable, so you can have it fitted to the exact style and dimensions needed for your home. The screen doors can mount on any kind of door opening, including outswing/inswing and French doors. But unlike regular screen or storm doors, these retract completely when not in use. “It provides a lot of air flow when you can keep your doors open in the summer,” says Phantom Screens local distributor Randy Aramenko, who has been serving Saskatchewan since 1995. “It’s also cost effective, because you use less air conditioning.” Phantom Screens’ executive power screen can be built up to 25 ft. wide and

16 ft. tall. This is ideal for covered decks or outdoor kitchens, enabling you to enjoy your outdoor space with or without protection as needed. The power screen is also compatible with folding doors — an excellent alternative to sliding doors, as they can open up an entire wall to the outdoors. Phantom Retractable Screens can be blended into almost any architectural style. Custom colours and wood grain finishes merge the screens with a homes’ particular colour scheme, so they don’t detract from your decor, but rather flow seamlessly with it. Have a home automation system? Phantom Screens can be connected, so they come down at

specific times of day when extra shade or insect protection is needed. You can view product options at Phantom Screens’ showroom by appointment and receive a complimentary quotation from one of the expert team members. “We install hundreds of retractable screens throughout Saskatchewan each year,” says Randy. “Every time we finish the installation and our clients use the screen, we get to see their response to the ‘wow’ factor. pring is trending, customize the season with layers! It’s time to revive your home with style and décor that will help bring spring into your living areas. Invite changes into your home this season with new trends, fresh designs and custom finishings. THE ALL-IMPORTANT CUSTOM ESSENTIALS Rather than sticking to one shade or pattern and risking a rather flat outcome, combine different tones and textures for a beautiful alternative. There are actually very few rules about what goes together and what doesn’t when it comes to design. We love to have fun layering colours and patterns, whether it’s with floor finishes,

paint, wallpaper, texture-rich materials, soft furnishings or artwork. Sometimes slight touches of contrasting colour can be used to punctuate the palette. It all helps to create a look that has enormous depth, personality and subtlety. But throwing these things together rarely works out. As with anything, in a good design, colour and pattern should be combined with intention and good planning. And even though the rules are flexible, there are some things we keep in mind when it comes to layering patterns and finishes. TIPS ON CUSTOMIZING YOUR SPACE At Patina, we pull all these finishes together starting with a unifying element. Sometimes it’s colour, sometimes it’s texture. We like to think adding colour and texture is about so much more than making a statement; it should be used to create a home you’re happy to come home to. You can create a custom look by focusing on something simple, like reupholstering

HOUSE & HOME

the seats of your dining chairs — which can be a small investment with a big payoff. This approach also gives you the opportunity to create something unique that you are not likely to find in a store. Matching your drapery to a chair is a statement that says “custom” loud and clear. This also provides an opportunity to use a small amount of a high-end fabric for accents and apply a simplistic and more durable material to high-impact areas, such as the seat, for the best of both worlds. We offer a wide range of custom services, from all the major floor finishes (hardwoods, engineered flooring, vinyl, laminate and tile) to custom drapery and toss cushions, blinds and wallpaper. With a large selection of fabrics and wallpapers, it’s easy to find the materials to make your home uniquely yours. For that “Wow!” factor finish to pull it all together, we offer custom artwork. To help you find the ultimate combination, we also offer interior design services to help you narrow it all down and give you that perfect home feel. Stop in and see us today!

An ElEgAnt Solution To A Common Problem Re-surfacing with premium rubber from recycled tires creates a product that is better-than-new and supports sustainable industry. By Kevin Hall Photos courtesy of Shercom Industries

erhaps you have already seen one of the many surfaces that have been restored and improved by Shercom Industries or one of its installation partners. You may already know how they use nearly 20 years of experience in rubber surfacing to apply a wide variety of colour and style options to make your driveway, patio or pool deck into a beautiful new space — one you are proud to show off and happy to spend time on.

Have you have been looking at a cracked, crumbling or uneven surface at home or work? Do you wonder if there is a better, smarter way to give a facelift without tearing up the old surface at considerable expense and hoping the new one is magically more durable? There is a better way. Your old surface doesn’t need to die, it just needs to be re-tired. Rubber paving made from

recycled tires is a beautiful, affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to a major replacement project or another ineffective patch job. The unique properties of the flexible rubber surface that make it great to walk on (such as improved traction when wet or icy) have resulted in the technology being developed for many applications in our communities: recycled rubber is

used in several local running tracks, falldampening playground surfaces and around pool decks. You can imagine how much more forgiving the rubber surface is when a poolside slip would have otherwise resulted in an injury or a shattered margarita glass! In recent years, Shercom Industries, pioneers in the development of rubber paving in Canada and now working with licensed installers across the country and internationally, has seen a significant rise in the awareness and purchases of rubber-paved surfaces. “The growing popularity of rubber paving is due, in part, to the social conscience of consumers and community stakeholders,” explains Kevin Hall, director of business development for Shercom. “Our customers are excited to learn about our fully-integrated model, where tires are recycled here in Saskatchewan and turned into something useful and interesting like rubber paving. The average driveway uses rubber from close to 200 tires, so each of our customers help make a significant environmental impact.” He continues: “The real driver of our success, and the key to our industry’s sustainability, is the fact that rubber paving is a fantastic product in its own right. A luxury custom pool deck or a new seamless driveway and sidewalk for your home is often more affordable than the alternatives, carries a longer life expectancy and is installed in a single day, which minimizes your inconvenience.” So before you attack your driveway or backyard patio with a jack-hammer or a back-hoe, you may want to check out the many benefits of rubber paving and the ways it can add value to your home and lifestyle while doing something great for our environment. PROTECTING YOUR BUSINESS IN THE VIRTUAL WORLD By Brook Thalgott

Today, businesses face far more risks than in the past, such as business interruption, cash flow and liquidity, reputation, regulatory changes and weak economic climate. Now, businesses face another growing threat — cyber risk. No company, no matter how big, is immune to issues from the virtual world. Just ask Sony Pictures and Target. Both suffered massive security breaches that affected both customers and employees alike. In today’s connected world, businesses must be aware of the risks posed in cyberspace, and how to protect against threats.

108

FineLifestyles

Saskatoon

BUSINESS

A

ccording to the Globe and Mail, cyber attacks have already hit more than one third of Canadian businesses. Gaining access via anything connected to the Internet, these well-funded and sophisticated criminal enterprises will attack businesses of any size and cause serious damage. Because the risk is constantly evolving, and the legal system is usually playing catch-up to technology, businesses have to protect themselves from all angles. With smaller businesses (less than 100 people) often the target, it really isn’t the massive multinationals alone that need to worry. While cyber risk insurance can help, it’s not the only piece of the puzzle. Cyber risk needs to be addressed across the whole business. An enterprise cyber risk management strategy is a must for any business these days, and senior management needs to be front and centre in planning and implementation. Where the IT department was the gatekeeper, now the whole business needs to be aware of the risks presented by cyber crime. First, businesses need to address what exactly is at risk from cyber attacks. It may be customer information, proprietary information on products or services, or communications between employees. The big question to ask is what will a hacker find valuable if they get in? The risk isn’t just financial — it’s reputational. When Sony Pictures

was hacked in 2014, they not only lost money over the release of the film The Interview, they also suffered serious reputational damage by the leak of sensitive emails between senior executives. Businesses must ask what needs to be protected and why. It’s not just senior management that needs to be involved in the development of a cyber risk strategy. A strategy should assess the current plan and practices and where improvements are needed, determine a monitoring process and what the procedures are if attacked. From the top down, the whole organization plays a part in keeping the business protected. Employees need to be educated about their responsibilities in minimizing risk, with a robust policy and compliance guidelines. Internal and external networks need to be assessed on an ongoing basis, with full knowledge of who has access to what and where everything is located. A well-planned and executed cyber risk strategy will help your business become cyber resilient. As the world becomes more and more connected, the opportunities for businesses grow — as do the risks. While we’re often prepared for the traditional business threats, we may neglect the ones that come from our connectivity. However, with a robust, well-planned and executed strategy, cyberspace risks can be mitigated.

hen you sit down and chat with Daryl Cooper and Colleen Schneider, you get the impression they are onto something. They project a knowing air and an absolute confidence about money management. The partners of Cooper Schneider Private Wealth have built a loyal following from their 7th floor ScotiaMcLeod offices in Saskatoon Square. “Our approach is unique and is designed to help protect investments against another devastating crash — and that is what sets us apart,” says Schneider. “Anyone can make money in a good market, but what happens when the markets get ugly? If the market crashes you don’t just have to ‘ride it out!’ There is a better way.” “We aren’t saying a crash is imminent,” Cooper adds. “It could come, or we could be in the midst of another five years of exceptional stock market returns. Either way, we have the tools to navigate any circumstance.” Cooper and Schneider have developed a RulesBased approach that uses sector rotation to take advantage of market highs and helps guard against market downturns. This combination of active money management and the careful selection of best sectors will likely outperform passive buy and hold portfolios. Refer to the attached chart for a snapshot of the research that helps shape the Cooper Schneider proprietary investment process. “The yellow bar is the unknown,” says Cooper, “and the cyclically adjusted price to earnings index (CAPE) is one thing we keep an eye on. History has shown us that with multiples like this we best be on our toes.” For example, we have been extremely underweight in oil since August. “It just doesn’t make sense to be in sectors like oil or gold if they are losing you money.” Colleen states, “When I joined Daryl over a year ago, I was so impressed with his money management system I couldn’t understand why everyone wouldn’t want a look at his strategy to compare it with what they are doing.” Managing risk out of portfolios is a strength of Cooper’s and he does it well. His clients don’t have the time, or the expertise, to manage money themselves so they chose his market expertise. His client base includes farmers, large farming corporations, retired mining and academic professionals, career professionals and small business owners. Cooper is a designated discretionary portfolio manager — a designation he has held since 2007, and one that fewer than four per cent of Canadian investment advisors hold. He also has 20-plus years of experience under his belt, during which he weathered two major stock market crashes. So because he has confidence in his Rules-Based approach, you will as well. Cooper acknowledges that caution and skepticism are both good traits for an advisor but timidity is not. He believes in

his process and isn’t shy about making moves in the market. The Cooper Schneider Group includes Raymonde Earle, Aleshia Abtosway and Ashley Giberson, each of whom bring a plethora of experience and enthusiasm to the team. “Our team truly cares,” says Schneider. “I’ve run my own small business and have been in finance all of my life; I know how important it is to surround yourself with competent people.” Investing and managing risk aren’t the only things this group does; they also provide a slate of wealth advisory services by bringing other professionals to the table when needed. “We are finding more and more small businesses, especially those with sales of $10 million plus, are looking for professional advice on how to sell or transition out of the business,” Schneider says. Why not think bigger and take a holistic approach to wealth management? Experience has shown bringing an accountant, lawyer and advisor to the table significantly increases the trust and comfort factor. “We are in the business of managing money, but we are great at helping people retire as well. Twinning the two components just makes sense.” When asked, “What will cause the next market crash?” Cooper smiles and says, “We are not here to spread fear, but we are realists; and rather than stick our head in the sand, we choose to be prepared. I tell everyone there are infinite possibilities, but one thing that could cause trouble is a global currency crisis. Right now there are 16 Countries in the world with negative interest rates. That’s right; Countries are charging people to deposit money with them and in many cases paying them to borrow! This is unchartered territory and something has to give. I hope the central bankers can figure it out and we are off to a rip-snorting bull market for another ten years, but we can’t be naïve! We must be ready for whatever comes our way, and we positively are.” Daryl Cooper Portfolio Manager Director, Wealth Management ScotiaMcLeod Saskatoon 410 22nd Street East Saskatoon 306.343.3255 www.darylcooper.ca daryl.cooper@scotiamcleod.com

“Smoke” on the Water

here’s something to be said about being the captain of your own ship. Do you enjoy hours of pure, unadulterated decadence and luxury? Do you crave power behind the wheel and the feel of wind in your hair? Blast through the water on a sexy powerboat or maneuver through waves on a powerful jet ski. Whether you enjoy racing with others or simply taking in the sights at top speed, nothing screams “summer fun” like cutting through the waves.

Get Out on the Highway There’s no better way to see and experience the splendor of the outdoors than behind the wheel of a state-of-the-art recreational vehicle or aboard a motorcycle. It’s not about the destination; it’s about the journey. Gone are the dated RVs and cramped caravans of yesteryear. Today’s RVs boast innovative luxuries that make travelling the road pleasurable and elegant. Featuring everything from quartz countertops to master bedrooms with walk-in closets, you can tour the open road in style. A passion for many, motorcycling can be a luxurious hobby, too. Take your speed to the next level with bikes that boast amazing craftsmanship. Take the $3.6 million Ecosse ES1 Superbike, for example. Made-to-order, this machine will surpass your wildest dreams.

Ride it All Night Long For truck lovers, a brand new truck is not always the end goal. Accessories allow you to outfit your vehicle to make your own personal statement, whether you’re at work, play or just cruising down the highway. From decals to ladder racks, exterior accessory options are vast. When it comes to protection, there’s the bra or bug shield, made-to-fit

rubber floor mats to keep moisture off the carpet, vehicle covers and state-of-the-art box floor protectors and liners. Come summer, make full use of the box with a cooler for cold drinks or a tent and mattress specially built for truck boxes. Heat protection and sound barrier accessories are also an option. For truck remodelling enthusiasts, there are flame and animal print body wraps, outrageous paint colours, tuned mufflers, supercharged engines, jacked up or lowered suspension, spinners, undercarriage or cab-mounted lights and hydraulics. Specialized grills, rims and tires can set you apart from similar models on the road. Swap out the pedals to get a firmer grip or just to have fun — think pedals with flames.

Priced at $3.6million, the ES1 is the world’s lightest, fastest, best-handling superbike, weighing only 265 lbs.

Music lovers have endless options to help ramp up the truck’s stereo system, from subwoofers to specialized iPod jacks to Sirius radio systems. Accessorizing with lights has a more practical side — protection — but can still reflect your vehicle’s unique look and feel. The wonderful world of waves and wheels is expanding — enjoy the ride! Hit The Water in Style This summer By Melanie Furlong

It should be no surprise that summer in Saskatoon is synonymous with lake life. Saskatchewan is home to approximately 100,000 beautiful lakes and a vibrant recreational culture that includes boating, fishing, waterskiing, wakeboarding and wakesurfing. Whether you visit your family’s lakeside cabin or drive to the nearest lake after work, hitting the water guarantees summer fun — especially if you’re in a top of the line boat from GT Performance. T Performance co-owner, Tyler Evans, grew up spending every summer on the water. “Spending time with family and friends, relaxing and having a good time on the water or enjoying power sports is a big part of our lifestyle here,” says Evans. Evans was so passionate about water and power sports that four years ago he made the difficult decision to forgo farming and open GT Performance with his father, Glen. Although they still miss the smell of a freshly harvested field, they haven’t looked back. This family business now represents some of the best brands the industry can offer a boating or water sports enthusiast.

Tigé, their line of tournament boats, simply can’t be beat. They are leading the industry in reliability, fuel efficiency, and wave producing technology. While boat drivers have traditionally been in control of producing the wave for a wakesurfer, riders now control the waves behind a Tigé. The boat driver simply navigates and the rider controls their surfing experience by remote control. If the rider wants a longer, higher, shorter or more responsive wave, they can make it happen.

“We consider our customers part of the family and we do everything we can to take care of them.”

GT Performance client and wakesurfing enthusiast Chris Aalbers is now a Tigé Z1 owner. He says the Tigé wake is the best out there because it’s long, clean, crisp and not washed out.

With the Tigé remote control, riders have almost endless possibilities. Aalbers says, “I like that you can control your wake, control your fun and hold it in the palm of your hands. You’re not relying on anyone else to do it for you.” More recently, GT Performance has brought on Premier Pontoons, a luxurious line of high-end pontoon boats. These pontoons, which some call floating living rooms or the Cadillac of pontoons, can feature water slides, refrigerators, barbecues and bars — or anything else a person wants. Great for fishing and safe for younger kids, these roomy boats are uniquely engineered and have performance and service records second to none. “Once customers found out that we had these in stock, they were ready to buy,” says Evans. “They are very plush and well-built. This high-quality brand is a great fit for us.” GT Performance only carries the best brands for their customers. If they wouldn’t own it themselves, it won’t come through their doors, says Evans. “The product might say Tigé or Premier on it, but when it leaves our store, our name is attached to it as well.” Whether customers are buying new or used boats at GT Performance, Evans takes every single owner out on their testing lake for a demonstration. Then he gives them his personal cell phone number in case they have any questions afterward. A few weeks later, he follows up with their customers to see how they’re enjoying their boat. The store also carries the top-of-theline brand in trailers, Neo Trailers. These versatile aluminum enclosed trailers are used to transport snowmobiles, quads, side-by-sides, motorbikes and cars. They’re also used by construction workers and other professionals to transport tools and equipment. One client uses a Neo Trailer to transport his $300,000 Ferrari. GT Performance is one of Neo Trailer’s largest dealers in the world. “When they’re developing new products, they come to us to ask questions,” says Evans. “Then they’ll build it for us and have us try it out. We’re very picky and so are they.” This page and nexT page phoTos by Lisa Landrie

Evans says they have no problem telling any of their manufacturers what they think of their products because they consider themselves partners. “These manufacturers don’t concentrate on how much inventory a dealer will sell,” he says. “They care more about the service we’ll give the clients. They look for relationships, which is one of our strengths.” In fact, GT Performance was the 2013 Canadian Tigé Dealer of the Year, and for two consecutive years Tigé bestowed its highest customer service index award on the dealership — the top ranking in the world. This award was voted on by boat owners who rated GT Performance 98 per cent in customer satisfaction. Customer Dean Lang says, “The service department has always been completely

on schedule and as promised. Right down to getting me a lost key overnight from the factory two days prior to a long weekend. GT Performance has great owners, a great team and great service.” GT Peformance’s core roots are fresh from the farm. Evans and his father are the first at the store at 5 a.m. and the last to leave. In the short summer months, they might finish their 40-hour workweek by Tuesday, but they’ll still put in another 72 hours to meet their customers’ demands. Evans believes their customers know they’ll be taken care of and can trust them because they stand behind their products. “On the farm, if you have to work all night to fix your combine during harvest season, that’s what you do,” says Evans. “And here, we do the same until we’re

sure our customers are well taken care of. We believe anyone can sell you a product. Usually, the last thing customers think about is service—until they have a problem. We consider our customers part of the family and we do everything we can to take care of them.”

products available when they need them. “Purchasing a dock or boat lift for your property is a big purchase, and we want to make sure our customers do it right so they only have to do it once,” says Kaup. “We always say you’ll never have buyer’s remorse with our product.”

WHEELS

Kaup started in the boat lift business with his brother more than a decade ago. After purchasing a FLOE dock and lift system to enjoy at their own cottage, they were sold on the product’s high quality and troublefree installation and maintenance. It was a family decision — and an easy one at

that — to go into business for themselves. With dock and boat lift businesses in four provinces, they are now the largest FLOE dealers in Canada. Kaup has operated the Saskatchewan branch for eight years, and in that time has watched the business grow and flourish. The company has recently started offering year-round installation and removal of their products all across the province. As any outdoor recreation lover in the Prairies knows, summer is a precious season. Kaup says it’s always his goal to meet customers’ needs as quickly as possible. “If there’s a part someone needs, we typically try to replace it on the spot so they’re not waiting for weeks, wasting time when they could be out on the water,” says Kaup. He has a large selection of parts available right in store, and if a customer can’t get to him, he’s happy to get the part to the customer, transporting by bus or courier so the fix can be made quickly. But one of the best things about the FLOE systems Kaup sells is that they require

very little maintenance. “Installing, removing or fixing a dock and boat lift system is not anyone’s favourite job,” Kaup says with a laugh. “But these systems are easy to use, reliable, and all adjusted above water, which really makes it user-friendly and safe.” The service warranty on the parts and systems are also excellent, which means customers can be confident in their purchase. Another benefit of the FLOE systems is they look good. While the most important factor for choosing a dock and lift systems is picking what’s right for your lifestyle and your property, it’s always nice to know that you have the option to upgrade. The FLOE systems are designed with a modular approach, making it easier for buyers to start with what they need, then add on over the years. “For any water enthusiast, the docking area is like curb appeal of your home,” explains Kaup. “If you want it to add value and curb appeal to your property, a good boat lift is the best way to do it.”

Life is Better by a Campfire By Brook Thalgott Photos Lisa Landrie

he newly opened Oak Centre RV Mall is a result of fresh thinking. Vastly different than other places to seek an RV, service and accessories, Oak Centre is, in one word, huge. Upon approach one sees rows and rows of sparkling coaches displayed across a 15-acre parcel. Whether you want a towable or motorized, purchase or rental, new or used, luxury-living, destinationvacation or micro-light towing, every option is available at Oak Centre for your vacation. Weekends at the campground, entire summers at the lake, or road trip adventures where you just pick a direction and drive, your adventure awaits.

Oak Centre RV Mall is home to four stores: TRX RV, TCC Truck Camper Canada, Scotty’s RV Source and RVceteras. TRX RV, the anchor tenant at Oak Centre RV Mall, has been giving Western Canadian campers the best RV products at the best price with the best service since 2003. TRX RV prides itself in giving customers a shopping experience like no other. Three hundred and fifty coaches await your selection, with upwards of 40 RVs on display in the brand-new 24,000 sq. ft. campground. Want high-quality? TRX RV is one of only four Canadian Airstream dealers, one of a handful

of Winnebago dealers in the country, and the only dealer in Canada where you can see three different options of Class B diesels; Winnebago Era, Prolite Generation and Airstream Interstate are all Mercedes diesel builds. “We ensure that we sell better-built products,” says Tom Oakes, owner of TRX RV. “Better-built is a better investment, hands-down. Sometimes we’ve waited years for exclusive rights, but patience pays. We select the best because we know our customers will benefit with low maintenance, hasslefree usage, better resale value and strong pride-of-ownership.”

TRX RV also provides customers with the knowledge they need to make their RV experience safe and great. These days, weight is the foremost consideration when buying an RV or travel trailer, and TRX RV makes sure that you’re getting the lightest, yet strongest and best-built units available. Towing light means less vehicle wear and tear, less driver fatigue, and a safer trip for your family. Perhaps most important, less weight per foot means you can have a roomier unit for your camping days and nights – something everyone enjoys. The TRX team ensures they provide accurate data on what you can pull with your vehicle, what to avoid, and which RV best suits your towing capability, budget and lifestyle. Plus, TRX RV offers RV towing and usage seminars. While it’s the largest RV dealer in Saskatchewan and the only local dealer built from the ground up, TRX RV stands out because of its quality of the service.

“For us, it’s more than just selection,” says Oakes. “We provide an excellent experience from the time we meet you until we hand you the keys through to any service you may need. The testimonials on our website speak volumes.” If you’re in the market for a truck camper, TCC Truck Camper Canada is one of only two locations in North America that sells most of Truck Camper’s products, offering campers an unparalleled cross-section. Shoppers can walk between a half-dozen choices to suit their particular truck. A similar shopping excursion would require visiting six different dealers spread over two provinces. Names such as

Adventurer, Northern Lite, Eagle Cap, Palomino (Maverick and Bronco), Bigfoot, Northwood Manufacturing (Arctic Fox and Wolf Creek), Lance Campers and Host abound. Scotty’s offers not only towable and motorized RV rentals but specialized cold-weather trailers and park models. With no other dealer offering customers the chance to rent an RV for a special event or a chance to try before they buy, Scotty’s RV SOURCE is the place to go to test out the RV lifestyle. RVceteras, a boutique-styled RV service, parts and accessories store, makes shopping fun. They provide pre-delivery inspections, hitch and trailer set-ups,

Our grandfather and father both believed, “Everyone deserves a great second or new-to-you vehicle.”

Auto sales is in our blood and the thing we always hoped we would do most. Now, as third generation owners, and open since 2009, our values remain the same. Be passionate about what you drive. At MacNeil motors, we try our best to be different and carry great quality pre-owned and speciality vehicles of all makes and models that our customers demand most. Now into our sixth year, and quickly becoming one of Canada's largest growing preowned dealerships, we recognize our success has come from one thing: providing our customers the automobiles they want to drive most with the best value for their dollar. Unlike other dealerships where you may just be a transaction, we realize that when you make a purchase at MacNeil Motors, it’s our family name that gets attached to every single one of you, our valued customers. And we take that very seriously. If you are in the market for a great pre-owned vehicle, we would like to personally invite you to our family dealership and have the opportunity to earn your business. We look forward to meeting you!
