The sheer energy and pace of the show was impressive that hot summer night, and Doyle and the band had the crowd eating out of their hands. You can catch him again on November 5 at Casino Regina. GUCCI’S

HORSEBIT MOTIF By FL Staff

T

here is much discussion over which Gucci developed the horsebit motif for the brand in 1953. Some attribute it to the founder himself, Guccio Gucci. Others attribute it to Guccio’s eldest son, Aldo Gucci, who was instrumental in expanding the family empire when he established offices in New York City — thus introducing the brand to an array of film stars and jet setters.

motif was honoured in the Horsebit Marina Chain Collection, which brings together two symbolic Gucci icons: the unique Marina Chain motif and the highly iconic horsebit element. It’s no surprise the horsebit motif continues to epitomize a timeless elegance for the brand and its products.

Gucci’s creative director Frida Giannini says it perfectly, “The horsebit loafer has lived many lives since its creation 60 years ago, earning itself an important place as a wardrobe staple for both men and women alike. The double-ring and bar motif taken from equestrian hardware remains an icon, linking Gucci’s unique history with its modern day attitude.”

Regardless of the creator, the horsebit motif, an iconic fashion symbol, has endured popularity for more than 60 years. Debuted in 1953, the horsebit motif has transcended a variety of Gucci’s greatest creations and evolved into a bold piece of hardware seen on handbags and shoes. It’s also been enlarged, minimized, embossed, printed and branded onto canvas handbags, silks and watches as well as fine jewelry. Most recently, the

Jumping the

Procrastination

Hurdle

Human beings were designed to function in a world where impulsiveness works. Hunters and gatherers needed to get the most calories in the least time, so acting on impulse served its purpose well. Impulsiveness became part of our genetic makeup and passed down through generations.

T

oday we want immediate satisfaction, and it just so happens that’s easier to get when indulging vices instead of virtues. We are also prone to distraction, and today’s world has more distractions than ever. The combination of impulse and distraction makes it easy to procrastinate. The leading causes of procrastination are pessimism, negative view of the task or goal, lack of energy and impulsiveness. Following are ways to stop procrastinating to get what you want out of life.

Pessimism A person with low expectations has trouble getting started when he or she is already convinced of failure. Since the mind is a very powerful tool, what you think about is the direction your brain will take.

8

FineLifestyles

Regina

If you expect life to be easy, the challenges that inevitably come along may appear to be major blocks. When you accept challenges as a natural part of life’s experience, they will become manageable. To conquer pessimism, start small by setting an achievable goal. Then build on that success by setting increasingly challenging targets. Each achievement develops confidence and the desire to strive for more. It helps to seek out stories and images that inspire you. Imagine yourself succeeding and growing.

Negative view of task or goal We all have tasks we like and others we loathe. If you like what you are doing it’s not hard to find the energy to get it done. It’s a much bigger job if you have a negative view of the assignment.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

If you find a task boring, a chore or an obligation, try looking at it from the perspective of the value created when the task is done well. Connect the task to your goals, principles, commitments and character traits.

Lack of energy Pump up your power by refueling. Remember to eat well, exercise, get enough sleep, drink plenty of water and meditate. These are the essential fuels that keep you going. Be sure you are focused, organized and know your priorities. If you get stuck or need a break, move your attention to something else that is also a priority. Also try connecting unpleasant tasks with pleasant ones, such as exercising with a friend.

DID YOU KNOW: Impulsiveness

If you tend to make quick decisions without thinking about the consequences, you are likely acting on impulse. Impulsiveness is acting based on sudden desires, whims or temptations rather than careful thought.

NO. 1 TRAIT OF PROCRASTINATORS is impulsiveness

NO. 1 PROCRASTINATION ISSUE for people is getting proper diet and exercise

5

CANADIANS WATCH an average of 3.3 hours of TV every day

6

PROCRASTINATION IN THE WORKPLACE costs 2 hours of productivity per day at an annual cost of $1 trillion in the USA

To combat impulsiveness, know what tempts you, then use prevention and preparation to block the temptation until either it passes or you can think about it rationally. Think about the costs, the money wasted, time spent, impact on relationships, or living up to values important to you. Replace temptation with positive focus. Put reminders of your most important goals in front of you. Establish healthy routines, especially in the morning. And be sure to ask friends for support. Achieving Optimum Health:

The Unique Approach at Élan Osteopathic Clinic By Henny Buffinga Photos DeAnne Bell

É

lan Osteopathic Clinic was established in 2001 by Barbara Schultze, the only osteopathic manual practitioner in Saskatchewan recognized by the Canadian Federation of Osteopaths. Her passion for working with infants and children led her to conduct her osteopathic thesis on “The Effect of Global Osteopathic Treatment on Children Ages 60 – 156 Months with Academic and Behavioural Difficulties,” which was defended in front of an international jury of peers in 2012 at the Canadian College of Osteopathy in Toronto.

10

FineLifestyles

Regina

Barbara uses a unique therapeutic approach that combines osteopathic treatment, neurodevelopmental therapy and developmental kinesiology to provide treatment for a broad range of health and developmental concerns. Barbara’s choice to stay in Saskatchewan means this treatment approach is available to children and their families in this province. To ensure treatment is available to all children (regardless of income level), Barbara offers a community pediatric day once a month, free of charge for children who would not normally be able to afford treatment.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Osteopathy is a safe gentle therapy that uses a whole body approach to manual therapy. Osteopathy looks at the reciprocal relationship between the structure of the body, including bones, muscles, ligaments and organs, and how it affects the body’s physiological processes. An osteopath conducts an extensive patient history and an in-depth physical assessment to determine the root cause of concerns and symptoms. Osteopathic treatment helps the body return to optimum function using gentle, manual therapeutic techniques. Osteopathy does not claim to treat

Barbara Schultze

specific diseases, but rather helps the body to function in a better state of health, specific to the individual. “Often, people don’t realize there is help for their health concerns,” Barbara explains. “Many conditions respond well to osteopathic treatment, including chronic ear infections, respiratory and digestive problems, headaches, migraines, TMJ and post-concussion.” The focus of treatment provided by Élan Osteopathic Clinic is specialized toward infant and child development, women’s health including pre- and post-natal care, as well as a broad range of other women’s health concerns. For parents considering bringing their children for treatment, Barbara’s advice is not to let others dismiss their concerns. “Just because we see something often

does not mean it is normal; a mother knows her child best,” she says. “If you have concerns, trust your instincts and get some answers.” Developmental concerns are sometimes difficult to identify early on. Parents are often told that issues such as colic, reflux, difficulties with breastfeeding and irritability are normal. Problems are not normal; proper functioning is normal. These seemingly benign issues are often dismissed, but may be indicators of more substantial concerns that may not be identified until further along in the child’s development. These issues early in life may influence development of appropriate motor patterns, which in turn are directly related to neural organization, core stabilization and more complex functions such as sitting, crawling and walking. Later on, when more complex

HEALTH & WELLNESS

learning is required, we may see delays in speech, coordination and, subsequently, the ability to sit still, pay attention and learn in school. Osteopathy is not a replacement for standard medical care. Osteopaths work in conjunction with other healthcare providers, including physicians, physiotherapy, massage therapy, speech, occupational therapy, lactation consultants, dentists and psychologists, as well as holistic therapies such as naturopaths, homeopaths and practitioners of Chinese medicine and reflexology. ADVICE FROM YOUR OPTOMETRIST Vision and Nutrition: Protect Your Eye Health the rate of development of cataracts including smoking and UV exposure. Studies have shown that patients with higher dietary intake of the antioxidants Vitamin C and Vitamin E had both a lower risk of developing cataracts and a slower rate of progression if cataracts were already present.1

s with other areas of your general health, your dietary choices can have a tremendous impact on your eye health and vision. Your diet can significantly affect your risks of developing both cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Cataracts are a common part of the aging process, which results in thickening and clouding of the lens of the eye. This results in decreased vision and ultimately requires surgical treatment to remove the cataracts. In fact, cataract surgery is the most common surgery of any type done in North America. Many factors affect

AMD is the leading cause of blindness in patients over the age of 65 and affects approximately one in three patients in this age group. Many risk factors have been associated with risk of developing AMD including smoking, age, cardiovascular health and family history. The Age-Related Eye Disease Study has shown supplementation of antioxidants, lutein, zeathanthin and zinc in patients with moderate and advanced AMD resulted in a reduction in the risk of progressing to the advanced stages of vision loss by approximately 25 per cent.1 Studies have also suggested patients with lower dietary intake of lutein and zeathanthin may be at a higher risk of developing AMD.2 Dry eye and blepharitis are likely the two most common eye conditions that affect patients day to day. These conditions can cause symptoms of dryness, irritation, burning, grittiness, watery eyes, transient blurring of vision and discomfort. Higher dietary intake of Omega 3 fatty acids was shown to reduce both the severity of dry eye symptoms and clinical signs of dry eye.3 The bottom line is the food choices you make can impact your eye health and vision and ultimately your quality of life in the future, so choose wisely. The

easiest way to get these nutrients is to eat a well-rounded healthy diet according to Canada’s Food Guide, ensure you get five to seven servings of fruits and vegetables daily, and incorporate fish and flax and nuts/seeds into your diet on a regular basis. Supplementation of certain nutrients may be recommended if your diet is lacking or for certain conditions. Please consult with your optometrist before taking any supplements for your eye health to ensure what you choose is both safe and right for you. Advance Eye Care Center is accepting new patients. Does Math Add Up for Your Child?

students are weak in the basic concepts, the chance of them becoming strong in the more complex concepts is slim.

Janet Klassen Director Oxford Learning Regina 203-2595 Quance St East 306.790.2000 regina@oxfordlearning.com

T

o many students, math can seem like a foreign language. It can seem pointless and irrelevant, without any realworld applications, however knowledge of basic math is a skill that no person should ever be without. Math literacy (also known as numeracy) means having the ability to problem solve, reason and analyze information. Math literacy is the second key concept for all students beyond language literacy. It is the ability to understand the “language” of math (for example “sum” means an answer to addition; “difference” means the answer to subtraction). Numeracy is made up of many concepts, and it takes years to be able to understand and use these concepts effectively. If

14

FineLifestyles

Regina

Math requires abstract thinking and sometimes the transition from concrete thinking to abstract thinking is difficult to grasp. Students also find it a challenge to interpret word problems — figuring out exactly what the problem is asking them to do, and the steps they need to complete to find the answer. Math literacy helps students to decipher what steps a word problem requires by understanding the terminology. When students are fluent with basic operations, it frees their brains to problem solve, reason and analyze more effectively. Acquiring math competence is different than other subjects. Math is cumulative, meaning it builds upon earlier concepts/ skills. This fact alone is not necessarily a problem, but the pace at which teachers must move through the curriculum can be. Students needing more time or extra help to grasp a concept can fall behind and struggle to be able to catch up to the rest of the class, leaving them with gaps in their math comprehension. When students don’t have a fundamental understanding of the concepts, they rely on memorization to get by, which is not the same as developing comprehension. Often, a lack of confidence and/or motivation gets in the way of students achieving math literacy. It is very important for students to have positive experiences with math from an early age.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Feeling capable and competent goes a long way toward developing confidence in the ability to “get” math. Some students don’t see the value of becoming math literate, asking, “When am I ever going to use this?” If students are shown realworld examples of how math is used in their daily lives, this can help to motivate them to make the effort needed to become math literate. Students need to stop thinking of math as something that they will only use in the classroom. Developing math literacy is a process that can take years, but it’s well worth the extra effort because math doesn’t end when school does. Math has practical applications in everyday life and for the rest of a student’s life — from cooking, to fitness, to home décor, to landscaping, to nursing, to driving, to music and even to art. What is computer science? Math. What is creativity? Math. What is carpentry? Math. Luckily, it’s never too late to review the basic concepts or build math skills. The stronger the foundation is in basic math concepts — addition, subtraction, division, multiplication and fractions — the easier math becomes. Summer is a great time to develop basic math skills. For more information about helping your child develop stronger math literacy skills, and for information about personalized math programming, contact Janet Klassen at Oxford Learning Regina 306.790.2000 or regina@oxfordlearning.com.

Savour Your City on a Local Food Tour By Melanie Furlong Photos DeAnne Bell

Put on your walking shoes and get ready to taste some of the best food in Moose Jaw and Regina. Taste-It Food Tours is offering dinner and luncheon tours in both cities for the first full season. P

atti Rodger, owner of Taste-It Food Tours, says the walking and dining tours will give tourists and locals a chance to sit down and experience each restaurant and menu, helping them decide where to spend future dining dollars. Rodger was inspired to start Taste-It Food Tours after trying similar tours in the U.S. while on holiday. “We’d try five or six places, then make dining plans for our next visit,” she says. “That’s the whole idea behind this.” As you wind through Moose Jaw, Rodger tells the story of its inception in 1882 and its history up through the 1920s. “I tell the guests about the colourful characters we had here and how the illegal whiskey trade impacted Moose Jaw more than any other city in Canada,” she says. In downtown Regina, she imparts the history of the city and heritage buildings along the tour.

The history is great for both tourists and the locals. In fact, all the Taste-It Food Tours, which are unique in Saskatchewan, are creating a stir. The company is hoping to launch in Saskatoon soon and will launch in Cypress Hills this summer. They have been particularly popular with women who like to attend in groups the first time and return for a second tour with their husbands. Patron Karlee Goby did the Moose Jaw dinner tour last season. “I found this tour to be a great way to learn a little bit more about the city, while having a great time and eating, too,” says Goby. “Each restaurant on the tour is unique and provides a unique food offering. A steady force in the Canadian music scene for several decades, Alan Doyle is still going strong. This year alone, the singer songwriter released both a solo album, So Let’s Go, and a successful autobiography. He has also been exploring outside of his wheelhouse in the last few years, acting in the Akiva Goldsman’s film Winter’s Tale alongside his longtime friend Russell Crowe, as well as appearing on Republic of Doyle with Allan Hawco.

week or a day,” says Doyle. “Russell would be at the top of that list, and Allan Hawco as well — just guys who empower other people and have asked me to be part of their lives through acting or movie scores. I feel really lucky those friendships have allowed me to be a bit of a moonlighting artist, rather than just a musician.”

you just go do it,” he says. “If you don’t have it in a day, it’s probably not going to come. A book takes a lot more time and perspiration.” Doyle wrote the book himself, but thanks his editor, Nita Pronovost, for her invaluable input and guidance in navigating the new form of writing. His album, So Let’s Go, is his second solo effort and was released earlier this year. With influences from the very pop to the very folk, his songs still call to the Newfoundland folk of his childhood while attaining mainstream appeal. The upbeat album features songs Doyle wrote himself as well as those he co-authored with Ed Robertson, Jerrod Bettis, Gordie Sampson and Todd Clark. His book, Where I Belong: Small Town to Great Big Sea, came out to wide acclaim in October and was the runner-up in Newfoundland’s 2014 BMO Winterset Awards and a 2015 Atlantic Book Awards finalist. It was also shortlisted for the 2015 Leacock Medal for Humour. While many readers may have been expecting

a tell-all of the beloved band, the book instead focuses on life in Petty Harbour and how the elements of his childhood eventually formed him into the perfect front man for Great Big Sea. “I was grateful to be able to tell the stories and grateful to have that many stories to tell,” Doyle says. “Some people don’t have the rich history to call upon that I had, where every day there is a tall tale unfolding before your very eyes.” As a seasoned songwriter yet novice writer, Doyle’s debut shows his roots in music with many critics and readers suggesting his voice as an author is lyrical. “Writing a song is kind of a reflex; you get an idea for something and then

As with his songwriting, Doyle was focused on maintaining an authentic voice. “I never sing anything I wouldn’t say, and I kind of stuck to that rule in my book as well,” he says. “When I tried to write something and I wasn’t sure if it sounded like me, I would do the only thing I knew how: I went down to the recording studio in my house and read it out loud.” Doyle will be touring with the Barenaked Ladies this year, and on Thursday, Nov. 5 he will be headlining a show at the Casino Regina Show Lounge. Tickets go on sale by phone, online and in-person on June 17 for Players Club members and June 19 for the public. Anyone can sign up for a card to purchase tickets early. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet Delights Regina With

THE FAERIE QUEEN

It’s a lovely tale filled with romance and humour that’s been charming audiences for centuries. William Shakespeare’s popular play A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the delightful tale of Puck, a fairy with an affinity for being mischievous as she uses her magical flower to entrap humans and fairies into a web of romance and confusion.

P

erformed by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) at the Conexus Arts Centre on April 22, The Faerie Queen was a fascinating adaptation of this classic story. As with Shakespeare’s original, this version of the fairytale looks at the varying contrasting elements of fantasy and reality and what happens when powerful elements such as male and female, light and dark, mortality and immortality collide with one another. Choreographed by John Alleyene, this beautiful full-length ballet is based on the opera of the same name by Henry Purcell. It was while Alleyene was artistic director of Ballet BC that he choreographed The Faerie Queen. “That was in the early 90s and I was privileged to see the performance and loved it,” recalls Andre Lewis, Royal Winnipeg Ballet artistic director. “I decided then that we would perform it.” Regina was one of three stops for The Faerie Queen, including Saskatoon and Brandon, Manitoba. The audience was captivated by the beauty and grace of the dance and the amusing tale amidst the rich sounds of the Regina Symphony Orchestra.

Celebrating a Diamond Jubilee During his opening remarks Lewis indicated this is the Company’s 75th year. The Winnipeg Ballet Club was

founded in 1939 by Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally. In 1953, the Company received its Royal designation by Queen Elizabeth II, becoming the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Lewis joined the team in 1996 as artistic director. “I’ve been living the dream ever since,” he adds. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet has achieved many firsts in its field on an international level such as being the first North American ballet company to enter Cuba and Russia. Considered one of the most prestigious and respected ballet companies in the world, they’ve also won countless medals. Lewis hints at other fascinating performances to look forward to including such favourites as The Nutcracker, The Cinderella Story and Peter Pan. The critically acclaimed Going Home Star – Truth and Reconciliation will be playing in Regina in March 2016. Performing for audiences near and far is a vital part of the life of an RWB performer. “We tour all over Canada and the world and love reaching out to our different audiences,” says Lewis. “We are often the first ballet company many local people see and that is very heartwarming for us.” Watch for more stunning RWB performances in Regina. www.rwb.org

On April 1, 2013, Birmingham’s Vodka & Ale House was born in the east end and the city’s pub landscape hasn’t been the same since — a great thing for Saskatchewan’s vodka lovers. Birmingham’s has capitalized on vodka’s growing popularity. At any given time, the pub is home to 95 different vodkas — all housed in Birmingham’s beautiful and massive 15-foot tall back bar complete with a sliding ladder. Also known as a top-notch ale house, Birmingham’s has 20 different beers on tap; you can even serve yourself at one of the pub’s WiFi controlled draft tables exclusive to Birmingham’s. “You can be your own bartender and pour as little or as much as you like,” says Chad. “And if you call ahead, you can pick your two favourite drafts for the table.”

Dill Pickle Vodka

To say that Birmingham’s Dill Pickle Vodka has become a Saskatchewan staple in the last three years would be an understatement. It all started in March 2013, when the yet unopened Birmingham’s Vodka and Ale House was looking for a signature spirit and cocktail to serve to its new customers. An opportunity came to test a new idea at a local women’s trade show. After teaming up with Finlandia Vodka, the idea came to infuse a flavour of vodka that would pair well with a Caesar, and thus Saskatchewan’s Original Birmingham’s Dill Pickle Vodka was created. Over 3,500 women agreed at the show that the spirit was going to be a hit. It became the signature cocktail at the newly opened pub in March 2013. To this day, the Birmingham’s Dill Pickle Caesar is still the highest selling cocktail on the menu. After the massive success of the sale of the product in the pub,

a huge demand grew for the vodka outside the pub. This led to a partnership with Saskatoon-based Lucky Bastard Distillery - hands down the best distillery in Saskatchewan. For some time, LB Distillers has been in full swing manufacturing and distributing Saskatchewan’s first and best Dill Pickle Vodka. They have done an amazing job of creating what has become a major trend of Saskatchewan culture. Now entering the third year anniversary since Birmingham’s introduced Saskatchewan to Dill Pickle Vodka, they have introduced a new collectors’ bottle, as never before seen in the marketplace. Their new bottle is a custom painted pickle jar mug filled with 500 ml of Saskatchewan’s Original Birmingham’s Dill Pickle Vodka. What’s best is they actually put a pickle from the infusion process inside each

mug before sealing the jar. Once you have enjoyed the contents of the bottle, you now have the perfect Caesar mug for anytime cocktails. Each jar is sold complete with a recipe card, giving ideas for some super fun things to do with the spirit. Birmingham’s Vodka & Ale House stands 100% behind its product. When it comes to Dill Pickle Vodka, you can be guaranteed quality if it says Birmingham’s on the bottle. Saskatchewan’s Original Birmingham’s Dill Pickle Vodka is currently available for sale at Birmingham’s Vodka & Ale House, Regina and in Saskatoon at The Thirsty Scholar Pub, Co-op Liquor Store, and LB Distillers. Very shortly, it will be listed for sale with all local SLGA liquor stores as well as Alberta.

Smoked Meat with Family Flavour  Nearly four years ago, the dining landscape in Regina changed with the opening of Jack Keaton’s BBQ & Grill in the city’s northwest. Brett Huber, a Red Seal chef, had always dreamed of owning his own restaurant and serving the food he likes to eat every day. Together with his wife, Kristi, and their years of hospitality experience, Jack Keaton’s was born and is named after Brett and Kristi’s two sons. Today, Jack Keaton’s serves some of Regina’s best BBQ. The menu features many BBQ delights including brisket, ribs, chicken and pulled pork. Nearly everything is made in-house including the Jack Keaton’s BBQ sauce and meat rubs, and the sides are just as delectable as the BBQ. The overnight baked beans, hand cut fries, homemade cornbread and made-to-order Caesar salad are legendary. You can enjoy Jack Keaton’s wherever you want: in the full-service licensed restaurant, stopping by for takeout or something from the grab & go cooler, or having the Jack Keaton’s team cater your special event. “We’re all about ensuring our customers can have our BBQ wherever they are,” says Kristi. “You can come by and enjoy our table service or grab something to go. SPORTS, RECREATION & TRAVEL

Majestic, mysterious and totally awe inspiring, this ancient site still beguiles our sense of reality. Floating high in the Peruvian Andes, this centre of energy has been reported to revive tired souls and foster dreams for those who make the journey.

Getting to Machu Picchu can be accomplished in a number of ways. Planning the excursion on your own or with a private tour company are other options, however selecting a pre-tour is the most popular choice made by cruisers with Oceania.

D

esignated by UNESCO as one of the new seven natural wonders of the world, an excursion to Machu Picchu requires preparation and is not recommended for persons with mobility issues. Some 3,000 stone steps of varying heights link more than 150 buildings from temples to plazas, residences and terraces over an impressive five acre site. Expect to spend a great deal of time walking and gawking. Machu Picchu was built at the height of the Inca Empire during the 15th and 16th centuries, but was inhabited, scholars suggest, for only about 100 years. Diseases brought to the New World by conquistadors is often blamed as the culprit for the demise of the inhabitants.

Your excursion will take you high into the Andes, involve overnight stays, local food, water and (of course) visiting the site before having to return to the cruise port. The ship sails when the ship sails, so if your self-planned tour has a problem, or the train is not on time, or heaven forbid there is nasty weather, you’re stuck. When travelling with a ship’s excursion all of these issues are taken into consideration and mitigated by the cruise line. Machu Picchu appears on South American itineraries as well those coming from the South Pacific via Easter Island. Our last itinerary with Oceania, aboard Regatta, the delightful “R” class medium sized, luxury ship, offered pre-cruise excursions as we sailed from Miami to Lima. The reverse of this schedule allows for a post-cruise excursion. Regatta shone with its typical elegance, but since a refurbishment in the summer

SPORTS, RECREATION & TRAVEL

of 2014 she has even more sparkle. Smiling faces are the norm for crew and even hugs from attendants and staff whom we have come to be very fond of over the years. “The kids” — as we affectionately call many of our favourite crew — go to no end to ensure that our special menu is prepared or our five o’clock cocktail, just the way we like, it is promptly shaken or stirred. The first few days are usually spent with other passengers sharing stories, photos and experiences of being high in the Andes. We particularly like the library with its “English club-like” atmosphere and a super collection of reading material. Canyon Ranch Spa is heaven! This last itinerary was over 40 days so hair required cutting, nails needed attention and so on. Do not miss an opportunity to be pampered in the spa … perhaps after your excursion to Machu Picchu. As always I am looking forward to seeing you aboard one of Oceania’s cruises. I’ll be the one with a grin from ear to ear. For many car aficionados, the ideal garage shares the same elements as the man cave. Garages with wet bars, flat-screen televisions, fitness centres, woodworking shops and lounge areas to display autorelated memorabilia are becoming increasingly popular. Las Vegas native and Forty4 Asset Management CIO Francis Wisniewski put a small basketball court and gambling room — complete with a full-size craps table —in his 15,000 sq. ft. garage. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who famously collects Porsches, keeps them in an underground garage three blocks from his

home. The three-storey garage houses his 46 Porsches and features a clubroom with a billiard table, kitchenette and office. A New York penthouse apartment listed for sale comes with an “en suite sky garage” that allows for your car to be transported by elevator to your apartment and parked just outside your door. The idea of using a car lift, or elevator, has gone beyond space-challenged citydwellers. Car collectors who want to maximize garage space by stacking their vehicles also use them, as do those who prefer the attention stay focused on the garden, and not on their vehicle. Swiss company Cardok has created a bespoke parking solution to suit any home or vehicle. Installed under an existing driveway, cars disappear into a hole via a hydraulic ramp. A decorative roof fools passersby into thinking there’s no car parked at home and maintains the decorative appeal of your garden. It becomes impossible to vandalize or steal the car and you don’t have to worry about power-outages because every

HOUSE & HOME

installation comes with a small back-up generator. The same company offers the CarLift, which was developed to enable customers to access their basement garages utilizing a lift rather than a ramp. Turntables can also be provided within the basement garage to allow easier access to every underground parking space. In some scenarios, a garage is more valuable to a property when converted into living space. Some choose to transform their garages into extra bedrooms, home gyms or cinemas, while they move the car underground, as it’s more cost-effective than moving to a larger house. About 3.5 million Canadian homes have attached garages, according to a 2007 report on energy use by Natural Resources Canada, and a garage generally increases property values by approximately 64 per cent of its cost, depending on current markets. The kind of garage that suits you and your car perfectly will depend on budget, space and how you will enjoy your wheels best.

Dive into Summer with a Brand New Pool By Tori Stafford

I

f you think your chances of having that pool you’ve always dreamt of in your back yard in time to enjoy it this summer are slim, think again.

“Once all of the planning part has been done — the pool has been selected, we know where it’s going to go, and everything is ordered and here in Regina — we can have the pool ready faster than most pool installers can,” says Zlatko Matenda, owner of Pool Pro. “So definitely, you could have a pool built and still have most of the season to enjoy it.” Pool Pro offers prefabricated and customized pool options, built and installed in a timely manner, as well as

maintenance services after installation, if necessary. The fully equipped polypropylene enclosed pools are virtually maintenance-free for the owner, and all aspects of the pool are covered in the building cost, leaving no hidden costs for clients. Available in many different shapes and a variety of colours, Pool Pro can create just about any style of pool you can imagine. Manufactured in Europe, the pools available through Pool Pro are up to five times more pierce resistant than most pools. They are also far more resistant to UV radiation than most pools, meaning colours don’t fade. Their pools offer a service life several times longer than

those pools made from other materials, such as PVC or fibreglass. Pool Pro can also build overflow systems, a service not common amongst most pool installers. This allows clients to save time and money by having this system installed by the same team building your pool. Overflow systems allow for the draining and filtration of pool water, and keep the concrete or stone surround from becoming wet. This means less residue buildup on the walls of the pool that are above water, and the overflow channel surrounding the pool drains surface quickly, thanks to the effective circulation system. Pool Pro also installs UV systems which use the already-present ultraviolet light to keep your pool water as crystal clear as possible. With services in opening and closing pools, general maintenance and repairs, and even fencing and safety covers which increase safety and pool cleanliness, Pool Pro can handle all of your pool building needs. Whether you’re looking for an afternoon oasis for relaxing and socializing, an effective therapeutic experience, a fun and active play place for your family, or a means of everyday low-impact exercise throughout the warmer seasons, Pool Pro can help you find the right pool for you and your family’s needs. With an abundance of lighting, landscaping and even water fountain features that can be added, a pool brings aesthetic value to your property that can be enjoyed up to half the year, Matenda says. “Some people think the ‘season’ in Saskatchewan is too short to justify having a pool,” Matenda adds. “But once someone has a pool, they really can’t believe how much they use and enjoy it.” Pool Pro 119 Park Ave. Regina 306.216.9323 poolpro88@gmail.com www.poolpro.ca

Preparing Your Home for Sale

So, you’re looking to sell your home. As a seller, it’s good to be aware of what the market is doing. Presently, the demand for housing in Regina is still good, but not as elevated as in previous years. Buyers have a lot of choice and are starting to feel less pressure about finding a home right away. This means sellers may need to step things up a notch and find ways to make their home stand out from the competition.

W

hen selling a home, pricing is paramount. Your house might show very well, but nobody will be serious about it if it’s overpriced. It’s always wise to consult your REALTOR® and check out resources such as the Housing Price Index. Have a professional appraisal done. Pricing your property based on the appraisal will add to the buyers’

48

FineLifestyles

HOUSE & HOME

confidence that the home is priced within market value. You’ve been in your home for awhile, so it’s difficult to see your property like it’s the “first time.” It’s a good idea to have your REALTOR® and perhaps a home stager walk through your home with you. Check your curb appeal. Potential buyers often associate the outward appearance

of a home with the overall condition. If the curb appeal isn’t inviting, buyers may not even get out of their vehicles. A neatly trimmed lawn with a few flowers and a clean and attractive deck can give your home a welcoming look. Take a good look at your living area. Is it inviting? Does it have too much furniture? Is the furniture proportionate with the room? Large furniture in a small room looks awkward and cluttered. The eye needs to be able to glide across the room with ease. Clutter, dirt, chipped paint, worn carpet and similar eyesores will create snags in the ease and flow of the viewing. Inspect the kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms in the same manner. Dirt and clutter will drive potential buyers away. Some sellers will rent storage units for a short time while they are showing their homes. Consider hiring a home inspector to find faults and have them fixed before the buyer finds them. Buyers’ estimates to repair will often be higher, which can frighten the buyer away. If your home needs renovation, it may be wise to get estimates of the work required for the buyer to review. Armed with these estimates, the buyer may apply for a mortgage with improvements. What are the three things that will give you the biggest bang for your buck? 1. Reduce clutter. Throw it out, give it away or store it. 2. Change your light bulbs. Buyers want instant light and lots of it. 3. Fresh Paint. Perhaps nothing else will have as dramatic an effect. Ask your REALTOR® for advice, trust his/ her professional opinion and you’ll be selling your home in no time.

Since 2002, Mike Duggleby has been serving Regina and area as broker/owner of Royal LePage Regina Realty. Over the years, Mike’s extensive background in real estate and overall common sense has greatly assisted home buyers and sellers.

ATTIC EXPERTS: WHO NEEDS ‘EM? Joel and Wade Murray

real solution is balancing the amount of attic venting on a home. This is true for both new and old homes. The solution might mean a lot more than simply adding vents and more insulation. What about the vapour barrier sealing, hatch gasket, plumbing chases, wiring pulls — even the framing around the chimney? Ultimate Insulation - The Attic Experts specializes in attics and strictly works between the ceiling and shingles of your home. Following are some of the questions we are often asked:

JOEL MURRAY Owner Ultimate Insulation Attic Experts 1322 Elliott Street, Regina 306.205.7366 service@ultimateinsulation.ca www.ultimateinsulation.ca

B

ecause there is very little in the way of training or certification to install insulation, the reality is pretty much anyone can do it. The minimum code in the Canadian Building Code dictates only the very minimum required amounts of insulation and venting from the soffit (low venting) and roof vents (high venting) in your attic. But there is much more to it than that. As the owners of Ultimate Insulation – The Attic Experts, we often advise the

50

FineLifestyles

Regina

DON’T ALL HOMES HAVE ROOF VENTS? Homes are often built to the minimum requirement of ventilation and when the home is later modified it may no longer be properly vented. Attics are often forgotten during home renovations, but as we get more efficient in sealing our homes, more air is pushed up into an attic that may need updated ventilation. WHAT IS A VAPOUR BARRIER? A vapour barrier is a thin piece of material that prevents moisture from penetrating into the attic and forming condensation once inside. A continuous ceiling vapour barrier keeps excessive air movement from leaving the conditioned space to the attic. An attic should be a cool place, as warm air carries more moisture. Once moisture enters the attic, it can condense and create water damage to your ceilings.

HOUSE & HOME

HOW WOULD I KNOW IF I HAVE ATTIC ISSUES? The first sign of moisture damage usually appears around light fixtures and the attic hatch itself, since they are the most frequent places where the vapour barrier may be broken. You may also see water coming down the edges of the windows or the paint bubbling on the ceiling or walls. ISN’T INSULATION A WINTER ISSUE? When people think of insulation, they think of winter. However, it is also very important to ensure proper ventilation in the summer when it’s hot to prevent damage to the shingles from excessive heat. The heat in the attic will also make your air conditioner work very hard to keep the interior space cool. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN INSULATION INSTALLER AND AN ATTIC EXPERT? The Attic Experts are trained to find the root causes of the issues that present themselves in your home and make recommendations to correct them. Our staff is trained in all areas of the attic system, including routing bathroom and kitchen exhaust systems and inspecting and sealing all breaches in the ceiling vapour barrier, such as wiring plumbing chases and chimney chases. If you think you may have attic issues, call the Attic Experts at Ultimate Insulation for a free assessment.

Chatting WITH THE

ONE BILLION DOLLAR MAN By Tobie Hainstock

I

t all started with 112 avocado green electric can openers. In 1977, Bob Circosta was a talkshow host for an AM radio station when he was approached by the station manager with a situation... a client had paid the station in product. “When the manager asked me to go on-air and sell these can openers for them I thought he was crazy,” he chuckles. To Circosta’s surprise all the can openers sold that day. “I was in total disbelief,” he recalls. “I’m not sure what it was that did the trick, possibly because I had some credibility to my audience as a newsperson.” That was 37 years ago and the home shopping experience has far surpassed many expectations. LIFE’S A PITCH! As a home shopping guru, Circosta has had plenty of experience with sales and marketing over the decades. This has inspired him to write his book Life’s a Pitch, which outlines numerous key elements to successful sales and marketing. Over the years, many have encouraged Circosta to write a book about his work with various celebrities and high profile people. “Rather than doing something like that, I looked at writing something that would help people. I wanted to write something readers could refer to as a resource manual.” He adds that he purposely wrote a book that was not about him, but rather about assisting seasoned business owners and entrepreneurs. SELLING OR SERVING? So, how do you become successful at selling? According to Circosta, the key is not to sell a product. “Take a step back, look at the product and ask yourself, ‘how is this going to help others?’ ” He encourages business owners to advise their staff that they are not selling, they are serving. “Don’t sell,” he advises, “Serve. Help every customer achieve their goal.” Talk about the product and how it can benefit your customer. For example, if you own a shoe store, what you are really selling is style and comfort. Focus on the end result. If you buy these shoes, they will look great and be so comfortable your feet won’t hurt at the end of the day. “This is not a

54

FineLifestyles

Regina

gimmick, it’s built on complete honesty,” he adds. Being dishonest will only discredit you and you won’t receive a strong repeat clientele. HEALTHY COMPETITION Circosta notes that when it comes to keeping the competition on their toes, customer service is the key. People purchase from a comfort level. Don’t sell to your customers; provide a service and go to great lengths to serve with excellence. Develop relationships with your clientele and they will be loyal to you. Follow that rule of thumb and you won’t have to worry about being competitive. PUTTING WORDS INTO ACTION In conclusion, Circosta says the onus is really on the business owner. If he/she wants a truly successful business, it’s ultimately up to him/her. “I can share technique, but it’s up to you to take action. Gather the information and apply it. If you do it wrong, that’s okay. Everybody fails at something. You’ve just got to do it yourself to succeed.”

est known as the car of choice for fictional British secret agent James Bond, Aston Martin has been creating some of the most beautiful cars in the world for just over a century. Capturing the hearts and minds of car

enthusiasts of all ages and demographics, the manufacturer counts many celebrities amongst their clientele, including David Beckham, Elle Macpherson, Queen Latifah, Jay Leno, Halle Berry and Jason Statham. A perfect combination of beauty and speed, the V12 Vantage S Roadster is Aston Martin’s highest performing car to date and is bound to turn heads whether parked or speeding by.

First released in 2013, the V12 Vantage S Roadster looks to the future with a 6.0 litre V12 engine that reaches an impressive maximum speed of 205 mph or 329.9 kph. With race-inspired details like a Sportshift™ III seven speed transmission for seamless gear changes, extensive use of carbon fibre and a paddle shifter — which provides the driver with superior control — every inch of the Vantage Roadster is designed for performance. alone. The authentic appeal of its style, performance, quality and craftsmanship ensure it stands head and shoulders above others in its sector,” says Marek Reichman, Aston Martin director of design. One might think the car is only for the speed demon with its 565 horsepower engine, but the Vantage Roadster is a feast for all the senses. Whether listening to the purr of the engine or the Bang & Olufsen audio system, drivers and passengers are swaddled in luxuriously supple leather seats and surrounded by refined technology that has been streamlined for the enjoyment of the ride. “The V12 Vantage S Roadster is the mechanical embodiment of our company’s exceptional spirit,” says Reichman. “Beautiful, powerful and spirited, it is as spectacular to listen to as it is to look at. The new roadster is truly a treat for the senses with the capacity to deliver one of the most dynamic, exciting and stirring driving experiences.” Founded in 1913 by Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin, Aston Martin has had a bumpy road to success, almost closing its doors more than once. After a successful venture into the world of racing, the company’s added media attention put them on the map of the world’s elite. In 1959, Aston Martin was illuminated in the Pages of Ian Flemming’s popular 007 novels, and in 1964, a very high-profile partnership with the Bond film franchise began with the movie Goldfinger. Screen legend Sean Connery took the wheel of a silver birch DB5, a car that would later return in

the most recent Bond film Skyfall for the Bond franchise’s 50th anniversary. Whether new and high performance or vintage and timelessly elegant, Aston Martin cars spark the imagination by symbolizing the ultimate in English luxury and performance. Aston Martin remains true to its roots with a dedication to hand-built English cars in their state-of-the-art headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, a strict contrast to the modern world where outsourcing and automation seem to be status quo. In 1984, the 10,000th Aston Martin A V8 Vantage was created as a true testament to the unique quality of these cars that are not simply manufactured by the tens of thousands each year. This hands-on production creates the highest quality vehicle and allows the discerning client to create a truly one-of-a-kind car with the Q by Aston Martin program. Each client works handin-hand to customize his or her car with the design team, pulling from art, design, craft and history to create a true dream machine with signature colours, embroidery and textures. With the V12 Vantage S Roadster, drivers can experience the thrill of open-top driving and a true union between man and machine. Built for the open road, the Vantage Roadster is as beautiful under the hood as it is on the outside, a true showpiece for the automotive connoisseur who understands the journey is more important than the destination.

CONSUMER CHOICE AWARDS Recognizing Businesses to Do Business With By Brook Thalgott

These days, it can be hard for a consumer to figure out where they want to do business. There are so many choices for every product and service, and everyone wants to make sure they get the best their money can buy. The Consumer Choice Awards are working to fill that need — they’re your indication that a local business is worth your time and money.

T

he Consumer Choice Awards have been around since 1987, and came to Regina three years ago,” says Jeremy Basset, the Consumer Choice Awards business development manager. “We’ve awarded

Regina businesses in 2013, 2014 and

60

Regina

2015, and every year more and more people are recognizing the reputation that comes with being a Consumer Choice Award Winner.”

Every year, a third-party marketing firm — Leger Marketing, a 100-year old Canadian firm — surveys Regina’s citizens about the businesses in the area. Customers give their opinions about 170 different categories in six industries, and the company ensures

a cross-section of Regina is polled. “The surveyors ensure they get a good representation of our community, so the awards are meaningful,” says Jeremy. “The survey takes into account demographics like gender, age, education and income.” Once the results are in, the winning businesses are approached and the awards are given out. Once awarded, the winning businesses can promote themselves as the choice among consumers, which lets everyone know they’ve been recognized as outstanding in their field. “The Consumer Choice Awards are an excellent way

to discern which local enterprises and organizations you want to do business with,” says Jeremy. “Instead of relying on just referrals and online reviews, you can trust the opinions of the many, many people that live right in your community. And, you can find all the winners easily, right online. “Our website has a searchable directory, so if you’re looking for a particular product or service, you can find out which business is the best in the field,” says Jeremy. The directory features the winners from communities across Canada, making it easy to know who’s the best wherever you might be doing business.

CONSUMER CHOICE AWARD FEATURE

For nearly 30 years, the Consumer Choice Awards have been giving a voice to consumers about the companies they like to do business with and giving those businesses the recognition they deserve. The awards help the consumer navigate an increasingly time-crunched and crowded marketplace. No other award in North America measures to the same extent the opinions of the consumers and businesses of markets it represents. No matter if you’re a business or a consumer, the Consumer Choice Award is a recognition you can trust, based on real votes from real people in your community.

class solutions, these deliverables now have value and price points relevant to any size or type of business. Like her clients, Janet is a business owner who appreciates that simple is better. She fully understands the confusion often associated with finding technology solutions. To alleviate some of these stresses, MicroAge offers M4 Managed Services, a program that fully monitors, manages and maintains a healthy computerized environment while maximizing the business’s IT dollars. Each client may end up with a

different looking M4 solution, but the underlying features of 24X7 performance monitoring, preventative maintenance, security and backup management — all critical to a solid strategy — are present and affordable. MicroAge takes it a step further. “Refusing to take a cookie cutter approach to our customers is priority No. 1. We start with an overall health and assessment of the current environment and the technology strategy is unveiled through discussions,” says Janet. Through a mutually agreed upon plan, MicroAge conceptualizes the servers/workstations and print, communications (email, telephony, web), remote access and security, disaster recovery and business continuity needs. “Many of these services are now affordable and useful to small business, either located on the customer site or hosted in the Cloud,” she adds. “After implementation and we are fully satisfied the business has a solid environment, the next step is maximizing its potential. This is where we really shine,” Janet smiles. “As business owners, we want to use technology as effectively as possible and not lose productivity.” MicroAge insists you and your staff know the software’s capability and how to use it. Training is important and MicroAge has won the Consumers Choice Award for B2B IT training for the last three years. MicroAge can support any business through its IT learning process and can fit any timeline, budget or location, whether it’s a traditional instructor-led classroom, onsite customized and personalized attention, or online virtual courses.

n 2014, these four ladies made an educated decision to offer their clients something new in weight loss and beyond the loss. During the past four years in business, they noticed their clients needed something different, something with more education for lasting results, and a more balanced approach to weight loss for improved future success (Example: permitting fruit, cheese and exercise).

These clinics, along with several others across the province, work together as a community to provide exceptional service and support. All clinics and clients have access to trained professional nurses to help support their journey. Each clinic offers one-on-one weekly appointments with the support you would expect from a great coach. “The guidance they offer is invaluable and new!” says Rita, a client who has lost 60 lb. on this new program.

Weight Loss is not a one size fits all. These ladies and their coaches have received training and education in customizing dietary/medical needs to fit busy lifestyles. Additionally, the weight loss program leads to a strong maintenance education with clients learning ongoing dietary needs that best suit them.

All clinics retail their product to anyone wishing to supplement their diet to be healthy. They have 43 gluten-free, 23 soy-free and 60 lactose-sensitive proteins and many other low carb products.
