THE SPECTRUM by VisionCenterDirect

EXPERTAdvice

We are excited to announce an additional location opening this summer in the former Nevada Bob’s in Regina’s east end. We are also proud to debut a new name – THE SPECTRUM by VisionCenterDirect. To prepare for this expansion, I attended Vision Expo East in New York City (NYC) in March to visit our incredible designers and view some amazing new concepts in eyewear. Our new collections are jaw dropping. Theo from Belgium offers very colorful and bold designs that challenge complacency, and yet they are very wearable. Kirk Originals based in London are also very vibrant and use acrylic for a neon look. Drift from Chicago offers classic acetate shapes combined with temples carved from a single large chunk of wood raised from the Mississippi River floor, hence the name Delta Blues. They have also used wood from old fence boards and beams from the meatpacking district in NYC. Each piece has a story and is ecofriendly. Em’ from Italy uses acetates in blended colors that look as tasty as candy.

WITH FINE LIFESTYLES EDITOR THOM BARKER

seems kind of weird to be writing about spring after the incredible winter we’ve had—almost like no winter at all. December was the second warmest in the history of Regina. Across the province old records for warm temperatures fell in January. Golf courses started opening in March. March! Unheard of. So, let’s get this season kicked off right with the Spring Edition of Fine Lifestyles Regina. In this issue, we profile the Regina Women’s Network. This amazing organization started in 1982 with five women who recognized a need for a support group for Regina business women. Thirty years later, it is an indispensible tool for its 140 members judging by the number of businesses who signed up to be associated with this feature. Their stories are chronicled in these pages. Aside from that, this spring is all about style. For the first time, we are featuring a fashion icon on the front cover. Lucian Matis is a multiple award-winning Canadian designer who says he wants to bring more of Europe’s individualistic fashion sense to the Canadian scene. He and his designs have garnered so much attention that he landed a slot on the hot Slice TV show Project Runway Canada. Of course, we have our regular Regina fashion columnist Dean Renwick who advises us not to be afraid of colour. In fact, he says, it can have amazing psychological effects. Pantone recently announced its colour of the year, it’s Tangerine Tango, also profiled in this issue. If Dean is right, and we’re sure he is, Tangerine Tango ought to have you up and dancing in the street. We haven’t forgotten the men, either. Gents will find our guide for suiting up properly because there’s nothing quite like the feeling of wearing a well-fitted suit. Fashion is becoming quite a big deal in Saskatchewan. This year Regina will host the inaugural Saskatchewan Fashion Week from May 10 to 12, celebrating the thriving community of dynamic designers and entrepreneurial fashion industry innovators who call this province home. The three-day event will feature 30 established and emerging fashion designers who were selected to show their original Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter 2012 men’s, women’s, and children’s style trends on the Saskatchewan Fashion Week runway at City Square Plaza. Exciting times.

THE REGINA WOMEN’S NETWORK: Three Decades of Making Connections BY EDWARD WILLETT REGINA WOMEN’S NETWORK 14 FineLifestyles REGINA

“Secrets of a Confident Woman” session.

uthor Jane Howard once wrote, “Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family: Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.”

encourages our free spirited collaborations to drive the voice of women forward.”

Three decades ago in Regina, however, it was a lot harder to find such a “whatever you call it” if you were a businesswoman. Men had any number of organizations and clubs through which to network. Women, despite their growing presence in the workforce and business community, did not.

At the centre of the Network’s activities are two monthly functions. On the first Tuesday of each month, a mixer is hosted by a member, usually at her place of business. “People come in, there are appetizers and drinks, they interact, they get to know the people who are there, there’s a short presentation,” explains Jill Poulton, president of the Regina Women’s Network.

Which is why, in 1982, five women got together to form the Regina Women’s Network. Now boasting 140 members (and growing), it strives “to achieve a supportive networking environment which attracts the finest women, fully develops and challenges our individual talents and

Mixers and luncheons

It is an opportunity for members “to exchange, to share, to support, to empower,” is how member-at-large Brenda Klarer puts it.

“We like to stress the importance of developing relationships within the network as a way of doing business,” says Sara Londono-Sulkin, vice-president of public relations. “We get to experience what the person is doing in her business,” says Klarer. “You get to know them, you get to trust them. That’s why the individual business members are getting more and more successful. We do business with the people we know and trust!” Members are encouraged to bring guests to the mixers, and introduce them. Guests soon discover they engage anyone in conversation. “They’re totally embraced,” says Klarer. “There’s no cliquey thing going on here. That’s huge.” REGINA WOMEN’S NETWORK FineLifestyles REGINA 15

On the third Tuesday of every month, the Network holds a luncheon: a similar event but at a neutral location, also hosted by a member, often one who might not have a place of business at which to host a mixer. “The last luncheon was hosted by a financial advisor,” notes Londono-Sulkin. “She offered a free seminar for everyone who was there.” That’s just one example of the “added value to being a member. Anything you need, you can pretty much find it there, or someone who knows someone.” “They have the skill sets, the knowledge, that people can tap into to accelerate their own progress, their own journey,” says Poulton. “It’s invaluable.”

Women telling their stories At both events, the focus is on women telling their stories. That may include longtime members who are no longer active in business. “They’re willing to share with us their history and courage,” says Klarer. “We identify with that. ‘She can do it, I can do it.’ You have to remember where you

REGINA WOMEN’S NETWORK

came from and these women definitely supply that for us.” Everyone in the group has her own story. Londono-Sulkin is originally from Colombia, and lived in Boston for three years before moving to Regina five years ago. She went from being a clinical case worker at Ranch Ehrlo Society to starting her own business, Health As A Choice-Health Coaching, as a certified health coach. “One of the first things I was told by Women Entrepreneurs was that, ‘You need to network—go to the Regina Women’s Network.’ It was the best advice I’ve ever gotten. It’s changed my life. When you’re starting a business you need to meet people. Regina Women’s Network gives you an opportunity to meet people and do fun things.” Once she joined, she says, “I started to recognize that women existed in this city, that things were going on, and I wanted to be a part of it. When you move from being an employee to being self-employed, you need a sense of belonging. You don’t feel alone.”

“That’s how I feel, too,” adds Poulton. “I was a guest many times, and always intended to join because the women were inviting and supportive. When I finally made the decision, I was in the corporate world so from a business perspective I didn’t have any direct benefit, but as a professional woman, I had a lot of benefit.” Poulton, a business and leadership coach, eventually left the corporate world and started her own business, Destination by Design Coaching and Consulting. “Because of the relationships I had built and the network I had plugged into, I was able to get up and running faster.” Klarer, a Registered Massage Therapist, has always been self-employed. She owns Wascana Remedial Massage Centre. “When you are self-employed, you need to have a network of people to be able to refer to and get referrals from. It’s not just people referring business to me, it’s knowing that I have a network of people that I can pull different strengths from, whether it’s consulting, printing, photography or real estate. “Over the course of 20 years, I’ve

Left to right - Kristy Lee, Jacqueline Senko, Janis Waldegger, Linda Ennis and Lori Neumann at RWN mixer.

diversified from being just a massage therapist to doing all sorts of things in my clinic, every time really just rolling it out to the Regina Women’s Network—and the business just came. They already trusted me, already knew who I was. You’re able to grow your business that way.”

Special functions In addition to the mixers and luncheons, special functions are held throughout the year, beginning with the President’s Soiree, in January. This year it featured C.J. Katz, Claire Bélanger-Parker and Frances Olson. “We had 75 women there, and everyone walked away with their cup filled,” Poulton says. “They were just amazed and inspired by what these women had worked through.” For the first time this year, the Network offered a training opportunity for its members and the general public on a 50/50 basis. Secrets of a Confident Woman featured six experts, all members of the Network, introducing six different aspects of how to develop confidence over a period of six weeks. According to Poulton, the feedback was extremely positive; not surprising, considering “People would pay big money for training like that. We were doing it for free!” Coming up in October is a brand-new event, Courage, Wisdom, Success: A Road Map to Business and Balance. Details are not final, but it will take the form of a luncheon, trade show and guest speaker. October was chosen because it is both Small Business Month and Women’s History Month. “We’re celebrating our two pillars: women and business,” says Londono-Sulkin. Prospective members can join the Regina Women’s Network at any event or by mail, but the easiest way is online at the website, www.rwn. ca. Membership costs $100 for the year; special functions are separate.

“Everything is possible!” Even after thirty years, the Regina Women’s Network is definitely not resting on its laurels. “We are thinking big: we are being expansive, not contractive,” says Londono-Sulkin. “That’s really the energy flowing right now. Everything is possible!” “We’re positive, forward-thinking risk-takers who want to encourage and support other women,” is the way Poulton puts it. “We have old and young, we have women from the corporate world, professionals, retirees...even though we’re talking a lot about small business owners, it goes beyond that.” Londono-Sulkin emphasizes that the ultimate goal is to show other women in the community that they, too, can succeed. “There is room for them out there,” she says. “Whether they start their own business, or simply need support, they’re not alone.” FLR

EXPERTAdvice HOME STAGING Simple staging means significant savings.

scents the seller loves, it can easily backfire with the buyer. Curry, fish, pets, an unmade bed smell and even scented candles and air fresheners can turn a buyer around at the door. • Light: When people enter a house that is bright, they love it. If it has big windows that offset even a dreary day, it is a winner. They should also be sparkling clean! In addition to the above five points, an updated kitchen and baths, as well as updated floors, fixtures and landscaping are also very important.

Di Thompson

How Much Can Staging Save You?

Simply Stunning Designs phone: 306.585.0775 | cel: 306.581.7750 dithompson@sasktel.net www.simplystunningdesigns.ca

Statistics have proven over and over that staging a home will sell it faster at a higher price. But what we need to understand from those stats are a few more breakdowns.

What Really sells a house?

If a home goes on the market and does not sell within the first selling month (six weeks), the homeowner continues to pay the Mortgage (usually .0075 of the home price) and the utility costs (heat, electricity, water, etc.).

Of course, pricing plays a major part, but very often when you have several choices within your price range, you narrow it down by size, location and a few other factors you or your family require. These 5 points (in no particular order) sell a house: • Maintenance: Weeds in the front garden, dripping gutters, cracked windows and visible dirt and rust inside give the impression the seller does not care about the property. The buyer may wonder what else has been left unrepaired. • Staging: Well-placed furniture and accessories that do not overwhelm a space allows a buyer to imagine his own things in the room. A fresh approach with slipcovers, a few new accessories and plants can help avoid a dated impression. • Cleanliness and order: A house that is well cared for, tidy and uncluttered sells much better than one in an untidy condition. • Neutral smell: If a house smells of

At that point if the realtor has not been able to sell the house or generate activity they ask the homeowner to consider a price reduction – on average one per cent each month.

I have used the services of Dianne Thompson of Simply Stunning Designs for several properties. Recently she staged our basement suite. We had advertised it for over six weeks with very little interest shown. When Dianne came to look at it, she told me the space had good bones, but was a little underdressed. We agreed on a price, and she got to work. After the staging, we had many interested potential tenants, and ended up renting it to two people from out of province for $500 more than our original asking price. Dianne totally transformed the space from “okay” to “awesome”. Thank you Dianne! Sincerely, Ruth Pradzynski A.R.E. Law “As a Real Estate Investor, having someone like Dianne on my team is truly helpful. She has staged several of our properties both for sale and for maximizing rents. She knows what she is doing – she can take a very ordinary looking place and make it look ‘Simply Stunning.’” Edna Keep - 3D Real Estate Investments Ltd

Di Thompson – owner, lead designer of Simply Stunning Designs. As an artistic person her entire life, Di studied staging training in Regina, 2006, through the Canadian Staging Professionals. She also completed an interior design course in the early 90s.

Based on the US Census Bureau the average home-sale price was $249,500 in 2010. Based on the average monthly mortgage payment of $1,870 and utility costs of $250, the total monthly cost for carrying a home on the market is $2,121 per month. Homes that were staged sold in 78 per cent less time. Prior to staging, these homes were on the market for 233 days (that’s over 7 months), but were sold within 53 days after staging. So, if the owner had staged their house first they would have saved a substantial amount of money: $12,600 to be exact. If you’re getting ready to list a property and think you can test the market without staging your house, perhaps you should reconsider. FLR

Lynda Daly – Staging Designer. Lynda trained in interior staging and design in Dublin, 2006. She started her own company in Ireland that offered design consultations and staging for five years until moving with her family to Regina in 2011. Her projects in Ireland ranged from commercial to residential. Lynda and Di work well together and offer fresh ideas while having fun combining styles. REGINA WOMEN’S NETWORK FineLifestylesREGINA

Mastermind Groups

There is an old saying about what happens when you assume something, and it has its place in business too. “Assumptions hold us back. There is a perception that saying yes to you means saying no to someone else, and that it is selfish. But it’s not. Look at the big picture and see how getting in harmony with yourself can change the way you look at everything else. Those changes will radiate out into other aspects of your life.”

Mastermind Groups are a success principle originally posed by Napoleon Hill. John Maxwell has adopted many of Hill’s original principles and applied them to leadership. At their core, a Mastermind Group is a gathering of like-minded people who come together and help each other identify and move toward their goals. Working in a group injects energy, and the camaraderie and support of the group keeps you focused and motivated. These groups become safe places to exercise and practise leadership principles.

“One on one coaching is a process of growth and asking yourself questions. What do you really want? What are your goals, dreams and desires? If you want something that you’ve never had, you need to be someone that you’ve never been before. One on one coaching helps you achieve that.” “People usually undertake coaching to improve their business, but we uncover many things that help in all aspects of their lives. EXPERTAdvice Turnover a New Leaf: Tea as a Healthy Lifestyle Choice

studies about tea are endless. I am sure you’ve heard it all, so I will briefly explain the health benefits of tea and introduce an even more exciting discovery. There are thousands of different types and varieties of loose tea available. Among the most popular are: black, green, white, oolong, rooibos and herbal/fruit. Some of these aren’t even considered real tea because they don’t derive from the plant Camellia Sinensis, however we will classify them as such because when prepared they give the enjoyment and benefits that all tea provides.

Meghan Cosenzo

Founder/Owner of TeaLife Boutique 306.205.5768 admin@tealife.ca www.tealife.ca facebook.com/tealife.ca Spring is upon us and I find myself wondering where the time has gone. It felt just like yesterday we were ringing in the new year of 2012, making our yearly resolutions, and looking forward to another fresh start. I am sure, like most people, my plans to get the ball rolling have only caused the ball to fall and become too heavy to pick up. One thing I have been able to stick to this year is my consumption and love for tea. Much as coffee used to be my daily ritual I have now redirected my routine to a healthier, tastier option. Owning a loose tea company (TeaLife Boutique) certainly has its perks as I have 55 different types of tea at my fingertips. I recommend everyone making the switch. Articles and REGINA WOMEN’S NETWORK 26 FineLifestyles REGINA 26 FineLifestyles REGINA

Keeping that in mind, some benefits of drinking tea include: increased metabolism, prevention of heart disease and stroke, soothes arthritis and diabetes; helps strengthen tooth enamel, preventing tooth decay and bad breath. Rooibos tea calms asthma, allergies, and nervous tension. Rooibos are also great for people with dementia. Tea generally can be consumed up to 8 cups a day. It has enough caffeine in it to stimulate the brain without over stimulating the heart. And one cannot forget its known benefits for preventing precancerous cells. Recently dandelion root tea made headlines as away to fight cancer. In Windsor, ON they will be conducting a study of up to

24 patients, testing the benefits of the dandelion. Dandelion root tea improves liver function, enhances the entire digestive track, and contains 40 natural occurring chemicals. There are other benefits as well, too many to mention. How it works: Normally the cells in the body perform cell death, called “apoptosis”, where cells that are not needed or have damaged DNA essentially destroy themselves. Cancerous cells are resistant to cell death, however dandelion root “reminds” them to break down without damaging the healthy cells. This discovery could be the link that leads us to the cure for cancer. It gives yet another reason to drink tea over coffee. Dive into the amazing world of tea. Everyone has a preference, and there are many options available for you. Feel free to take a look at what TeaLife has to offer. We provide high quality loose tea at an affordable price. I can also recommend teas which suit your needs. More recently TeaLife provides custom designed wedding favours and corporate gifts. So begin today, and make every sip count. We are here for you every sip of the way! . FLR

A LOVE OF LEARNING IS THE BEST LESSON tudents can learn how to do math. They can learn how to write a solid thesis statement. They can learn how to create study notes. One thing that students are never really taught is how to learn. Learning is a process that comes naturally to all children. Information is already being sorted, categorized and stored at an early age. All children are capable of learning, but that does not necessarily mean that they know the best way to approach the process of learning. Learning is a skill that can be developed, just like reading, spelling, counting or studying. Everyone can learn, but knowing how to approach the process of learning and developing learning skills that can be applied in almost any situation is an important part of improved learning habits. Oxford Learning believes that teaching children how to learn and equipping them with learning skills is the most important lesson they will ever learn. “Learning how to learn isn’t just a skill that students use once in one subject or in one grade. It’s a lasting skill they will use in every situation for the rest of their lives, both in and out of school,” says Janet Klassen, centre director of Oxford Learning in Regina. “We teach students thinking and learning skills. We challenge them to engage their brains and approach a new learning situation using a set of skills that they already have, but might not have known how to apply,” she adds. According to Klassen, teaching thinking and learning skills helps students develop confidence in their learning abilities. This leads to increased confidence and school motivation. It can lead to great achievement when students begin to feel good about their abilities to learn.

Klassen notes that motivation is a critical factor in school success, but not one that comes easily. “Motivation is different for every student, and it comes from within. We eliminate the factors that contribute to loss of motivation - lack of comprehension, frustration and lack of self-confidence. We help students learn to love learning, and that motivates them in school and in life.” She adds that a love of learning is the most important lesson that can be taught. When students are given the skills that they need to overcome learning obstacles, they get excited about learning, and learn to love learning itself. When students love to learn, they become engaged in the learning process and excited about discovering and learning both in and out of the classroom.

Sara hosting a health food store tour at Body Fuel Organics.

HEALTH AS A CHOICE BY TRILBY HENDERSON PHOTOS BY SHAWN FULTON

illions of people invest their time and money in fad diets and trendy exercise programs each year. A few achieve lasting results, yet many others are left disillusioned, disappointed and unsure of which direction to go next. A personal health coach can guide them on their journey to better health. Sara Londono-Sulkin of Health as a Choice - Health Coaching offers her clients in Regina and area the personal instruction and guidance they need to discover what works for their bodies and lifestyles in taking their first solid steps to better health. “I support others in the process of learning how to make healthier choices for themselves and their families in terms of nutrition and life balance,” she explains.

Sara decided to become a health coach because it offered her a way to combine her two passions of health and counselling. She completed her health coaching training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where she studied multiple dietary theories and a variety of practical and lifestyle coaching methods. This in itself is a notable achievement, but Sara complements this training with a rich and far more extensive foundation of education and experience. Prior to moving to Canada, she obtained her degree as a Professional in Psychology in Colombia and a Masters in Child Development from TUFTS University, U.S. She is also certified by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners.

Through her company, Health as a Choice, Sara offers her health-coaching program to individual, group and corporate clients. She also hosts group and corporate workshops. Her coaching program consists of 12 sessions held over a six-month period. The sessions are prestructured to ensure that vital information is not missed; however, Sara is able to tailor the course to suit her clients’ individual needs. She also offers email support between sessions, introduces clients to healthy and simple recipes that reflect what they have learned and provides them with tools that help to better understand their life balance. guiltless self care, understand and reduce cravings, increase energy levels, feel great in their body, learn about new foods and how to easily incorporate them into their diet, improve their personal relationships, reframe the belief systems that are hindering their progress and discover the confidence to create the life they want to live. Business clients find that employees who complete Sara’s course have increased energy and productivity, are more satisfied and believe that their employer cares about their overall well-being.

The Health as a Choice coaching program is built around the concept of the Integrative Nutrition Pyramid™, a food pyramid that includes a balance of secondary foods - high quality vegetables, fruits, grains, proteins, healthy fats and water - and Primary Foods™, including lifestyle factors that create optimal health, such as relationships, careers, physical activity and spirituality. Sara’s clients truly benefit from her complementary education and experience, enabling her to guide them in exploring and overcoming the deeper obstacles they face in achieving better health.

Sara imparts ground rules to her clients, such as avoiding consuming processed foods as much as possible. However, she also encourages clients to explore their unique food and lifestyle needs, or Bio-individuality™. “One person’s food is another person’s poison,” she says. Sara helps her clients to recognize what works for them and what does not, and teaches people how to listen to and develop a relationship and a dialogue with their bodies.

“I like the fact that she is well-read and discusses not only on the topics of food and nutrition, but also the underlying psychological reasons for our decisions in those areas. She does not push people out of their comfort zones too quickly, but rather coaxes you gently towards making slow and lifelong changes,” says former corporate client and Regina resident Saravanan Subramanian. “Thanks to her classes, I am paying a lot more attention to things such as what I eat for breakfast

I would highly recommend Sara to anyone interested in improving their commitment to health and wellness.” Other clients agree that Sara’s warmth, energy, and compassion were key factors to their success with the program. One client wrote to Sara, “This class was a real eye opener. I think you are amazing because of your true humanity and your sense of humour. You have a very kind and gentle nature and I love how you put everyone at ease ... I appreciated how you allowed us to be on our own path of change.” “True health is the integration of proper nutrition and life balance,” Sara affirms. “I help people in the process of finding true health.” FLR Sara Londono-Sulkin 306.540.4814 sara@healthasachoice.com www.healthasachoice.com

“I feel privileged to have worked with Sara over the past year. Through Sara I have learned many new things about health in general and about myself. In working with Sara, I was reminded of many things I already knew, but hearing similar things again in a new context seemed to help make a difference for me. Sara is a very warm, kind, friendly person who is non-judgemental and truly cares about your well-being. Not only have I noticed benefits to my physical health but my mental health has noticeably improved as well. My sessions with Sara are very personal and I feel I have been able to move beyond many blocks due to her talks around the deeper roots and causes of why I think and feel the way I do (or did) and with her motivation I feel I am a much better me (body, mind, and spirit). I would highly recommend Sara to anyone wanting to improve their personal health and wellbeing.” Donna Loran (Individual Coaching Program Client)

“Growing up a farm girl in a Mennonite/Ukrainian community taught me to enjoy my heaping heart attack-on-a-plate (farmer sausage, perogies, potatoes, and cream sauce dousing all of it - YUMM). Since moving away from home I have followed some of the diet fads and tried to be “healthy”. I ate a salad once a week, vegetables whenever I remembered to buy them, and diet coke because I wanted to keep down my sugar intake. For the most part though, I was still eating copious amounts of foods that were not even remotely healthy while thinking I was making good choices. When we started the course with Sara, my eyes were opened to the effects of some of the foods I had been eating and drinking as well. She introduced me to complex carbs, superfoods and many other tools to use for making better food choices and ultimately living a healthier life. I am able to identify which type of hunger I am feeding and how to feed it in a way that doesn’t enlarge my rear end. Thanks Sara for giving me the tools I need to set myself up for a long and healthy life!” Becky Wiens (Corporate Coaching Client)

Sara’s Sweet Vegetables Ingredients: - 1 red pepper (Julienned) - 1 yellow pepper (Julienned) - A bunch of broccoli and/or cauliflower (Cut into smaller stems) - 1 medium white or yellow onion (Quartered and separated with your hands) - 1 medium red onion (sliced) - 1 zucchini (sliced) - Olive oil - Salt & pepper - Vitamin L (Love) Directions: - Place the vegetables in an oven dish and drizzle some olive oil - Add salt and pepper to taste - Hand toss the vegetables, with love - Place in the oven at 350 for 40 minutes (when they have been in the oven for 20 minutes, remove and give them a little mix) Feel free to edit this recipe according to your tastes. Mix up the types of vegetables (i.e. squashes, beets, bok choy, sweet potatoes) anything goes. If you choose to add asparagus, simply add them half-way through, as they do cook quicker. You can also add different condiments or fun stuff like sesame seeds or pecans. Be creative and don’t be afraid to explore!

EXPERTAdvice Home as Self: Create a Vision for Your Life through Feng Shui The year 2012 is shaping up to be an extraordinary and fast-paced year. It is the Chinese year of the dragon, the zenith in their calendar of animal archetypes. It is also the last year of the Mayan calendar, signalling the emergence of a new way of thinking, living and doing business. Planetary activity is creating unrest in world politics, in nature and in our individual lives. This is the best year for this generation to harness the powerful energy exerting itself on our environment to manifest the lives we were meant to live. Organizing the energy around you with Feng Shui is one of the best ways to start doing this.

Erin Mulligan

Erin Mulligan Design (306) 209.0208 erin@erinmulligandesign.com www.erinmulligandesign.com

Your environment has the power to pull you into a new healthier behaviour pattern or to drag you down into old selfdestructive patterns. What you surround yourself with every day is a reflection of how you view your prospects in life, what you believe your place is in this world and what you believe you deserve. A person who believes that life is stingy might live in a drab, austere environment. Their life will then manifest stinginess and smallness back to them. COLOUR ME HAPPY, COLOUR ME BEAUTIFUL! (How colours can affect your moods) BY DEAN RENWICK

t’s Monday morning and the sky is cloudy. Still sleepy after a busy weekend, you press the snooze button two more times before getting out of bed. As you drag yourself to your closet you find a soft grey sweater to wear with your dark grey dress pants. As the day progresses you find you feel listless and five o’clock can’t arrive fast enough so you can go home and ‘veg out’ on the couch. Sound familiar? It’s happened to all of us. But what if, instead of wearing grey on a dull day, you

36 36FineLifestylesREGINA FineLifestyles REGINA

were to reach into the closet and pull out a bright print or your favourite red jacket? Just visualizing it changes the entire scenario. Over the decades, it has been demonstrated that colour can affect our moods. When looking at society as a whole, it is apparent that during economic downturns, we tend to be drawn to sombre colours like beige, grey and black. On drab days we don drab colours. When situations look optimistic and bright, we pull out the more vibrant colours and prints.

FineLifestylesREGINA 37 FineLifestyles REGINA 37

Don’t be afraid of colour—

embrace it!

There are other colour stigmas that have developed with us over time as well: black is traditional for mourning, white is for a bride, baby girls wear pink, baby boys wear blue and so on. These traditions are also reflective of our moods at these times. We are sad during mourning, bright and reflective at a wedding and soft and nurturing around babies.

Colours and Moods So, if the colours we wear and are amidst affect our moods, can we use colour to change our moods? Of course! Colour can make you feel different.

confidence to go after your dreams. Put some red in your life when you want increased enthusiasm, passion, energy and protection from fears and anxiety. Because red can be interpreted as dominating, it is not the colour to wear to a job interview. Blue—the colour of the sky, ocean, sleep, twilight—is the coolest colour and is chosen most often by conservative people. Pure blue is the colour of inspiration, sincerity and spirituality. Blue is the perfect colour for situations that are non-confrontational and can be worn in social settings and at work. A great job interview colour.

Instead of turning to drab colours during drab days, gravitate toward more colour. For example, wear yellow—it’s pure, bright and sunny—also the easiest colour to see, especially on a grey day. Yellow brings clarity and awareness of mind. It is the perfect colour to wear for relief from burnout.

How to Wear Colour

On days when you feel like you can take on the world, grab something red out of your closet. Red is the perfect colour for extroverts. It symbolizes action and

Use colour to camouflage the imperfections (neutrals like black, navy, grey and beige) and to accentuate your assets (a wide red belt around a skinny waist).

3838FineLifestylesREGINA FineLifestyles REGINA

Be sure to balance colour on yourself. Some people can wear a lot of colour from head to toe and feel fabulous while others can only wear a splash of colour (as in boots, belt or handbag) and feel too much on display—too ‘out there.’

The right colour next to your face will brighten you and take ten years off of you. Don’t be afraid of colour—embrace it! Pay attention to how you feel in certain colours. Don’t be afraid to go with your gut instinct. Pierre Cardin said: “Remember what colour you wore when you got the most compliments and wear more of it.” So grab that colour and use various shades and tones of it in many different styles and combinations. Wear colours that make your eye pop. For example, if you have green eyes wear blue. Compliment your hair colour by wearing the right colour—red heads should wear greens and deep purples. The rules of colour have changed—so throw them out! Now it’s more about keeping the shades even than matching the colours. Even clashing colours are in style. Not sure what looks good? Take your cues from nature. What’s in your flower bed? Don’t get stuck in a rut. Have fun with colour. Feel free to experiment and mix and match. Remember, what worked for us ‘back then’ won’t work now. Yes, this means you can go out and buy new clothes. FLR

WATER FEATURES, WATER FEATURES EVERYWHERE BY KEN BEATTIE

42 FineLifestylesREGINA

pring 2012 has opened much like a piñata at a children’s party. We, the gardeners that is, have been bashing the daylights out of winter (the piñata) with hopes of this vernal idol would spill all manner of goodies on the landscape for us, at the very least a few blossoms.

One can’t forget the pond or otherwise waterlike feature in the landscape either, spring duties abound around this particular entity. I am confident that you, or whoever in your home takes responsibility in the fall for winterizing the water feature was diligent, timely and successful.

Early starts to the gardening season on the prairies and indeed the rest of the country, have many of us scurrying about to power wash the decks, place the patio furniture and, of course, do the typical and religious survey of the domain. This ritual walkabout I feel does encourage all that were labelled “perennial” to push their green little noses through the soil, mulch or various degrees of garden detritus much more quickly than if I had not perused the perimeter.

There is a fair amount of systematic shut down procedure when electric pumps, fish and tender plant life are involved. On the other hand, there is my method of dealing with my, rather her own water feature in our rear garden. Sadly the approach that was adopted, albeit simplified, was not very successful, actually not at all. It froze! Yes that’s correct, pumps, extensions, what was left of the plant and wildlife etc etc ad naseum, frozen solid. Not a great example to be sharing publicly, mea culpa. On the brighter side, the

spray feature really never did look that great, so now we can select another one that articulates our tastes more appropriately. My point here is to suggest that a water feature in your landscape can be a tremendous complement to your plantings, the hardscape and general overview of the garden but do remember the requisite maintenance as you plan. I have seen many spectacular water features in urban designs ranging from massive representations of Rocky Mountain waterfalls to diminutive “puddles” that gurgle, splash and dribble everso delightfully adjacent to or incorporated into a deck. The range is massive and seems to be increasing as we urbanite” are spending more and more time at home. The key from my optics is to be reasonable and realistic when it comes to the design component of the water feature. Hauling in tons of fill and rocks to fabricate a waterfall, Japanese style Koi pond or kidney-shaped lily pool may be your thing, but do keep in mind that when working with water, it is never perfect, especially the first time. Employing someone from a reputable garden centre or perhaps a pond specialist with credentials and a portfolio may be the answer. Beware: there are many more mom ‘n pop, selfprofessed landscapers and even more pond specialists lurking out there just waiting to take advantage of a new homeowner or re-design. Close friends of mine in Regina had the misfortune to fall prey to a “landscaper” who assured them that he and his son were experienced and could get the job completed on time and budget. Sadly this was not the case and up until legal action was suggested the landscape and water feature waited to be completed. Enter into a properly executed contract and release funds according to your agreement, withholding a reasonable percentage until you are satisfied with the work. I reiterate, nothing will be perfect the first time, so expect a bit of to and fro until the water feature is fully functional and not leaking. It’s water after all and for the most part will do as it pleases. One critical issue with water features is to have the water moving. You may not need to be reminded that mosquitoes lay their eggs in still water so if you want to keep this pest population in check, ensure that there is at least a decent ripple in the water feature. It goes without saying that if your pond supports fish and other wildlife, it is a good idea to have aeration and movement as well.

FineLifestylesREGINA

A Look of Perfection that You’ll Love

The health of the pondscape or water feature and the overall look of the water is, to my mind, improved if the water recirculates or is aerated in some fashion. Water features in nature, of course, do not have aerating jets, pumps or bubblers and they seem to teem with life, mostly beneficial. The green algae, duckweed and various other indigenous pond dwellers are for the most part, not appreciated in the landscape pond. Contemporary designs producing “white noise” using water are gaining in popularity as our living spaces shrink and housing densities increase. One popular approach to incorporating water in a design uses a recirculating system, a disguised container (usually under a rock) and a novel or very minimalist spout for the water to flow over. You may have seen similar adaptations in prefab wall-mounted fountains or in shopping malls, airports and large office buildings.

This approach to water in the landscape is very clean, contemporary and doesn’t have to take up a great deal of room. Recently I had the opportunity to review a number of interesting, urban water features, many of which were incorporated into decks and balconies. The photos attempting to show these designs, appeared that they could be fabricated and installed by a handy householder or if drawn and explained to a contractor familiar with working with water. You might consider this approach to water in an area of the landscape that you spend most of your time relaxing in. Enjoy our earlier than usual vernal shot in the arm, take care as you hustle and bustle through the garden cleaning and definitely say hello to me if you see me in the water features section of the garden centre. Sadly, I shall be purchasing new materials for my drastic faux pas of neglect of “the pond.”FLR

QUALITY, AFFORDABLE URBAN VILLAGE LIVING TEXT TRILBY HENDERSON F PHOTOS SHAWN FULTON

Regina’s hot housing market may be a boon for current homeowners, but finding an affordable, qualitybuilt home in a great neighbourhood has become a seemingly impossible task for prospective homebuyers. Windsor Crossing Developments in Harbour Landing offers a solution and is exactly where to look. “The market is really hot right now. There is a lot going on, but there is a shortage of affordable housing, and young people are having a hard time buying their first homes because of prices,” says Janine Wilson, a realtor with Homelife Crawford Realty and co-owner of Windsor Crossing Developments.

“That’s where we fit in. We provide an affordable option for the first time homebuyer in an area where they will be proud to live.”

Condo Living Windsor Crossing condos are an attractive option for first-time buyers because they know exactly what kind of financial investment is needed for the duration of their home ownership. Condos starting at a list price of $239,900 compare favourably to other housing options in their price range. Condo owners do not have to worry about costly renovations or upkeep required in an older home. They also do not have the added expenses of new residential construction such as landscaping or fence construction.

Low condo fees of only $110 per month cover maintenance and exterior insurance costs. Each suite is equipped with a furnace and water heater, and residents pay their own utilities. This gives residents more control over their living expenses and not having to worry about paying extra to cover their neighbours’ excessive power or water use. According to Wilson, they also need not worry about condo fees increasing dramatically in the future. Without many home ownership responsibilities, such as maintenance and lawn care, condo residents have more freedom to spend their non-working hours enjoying the things they love most. They can enjoy their own backyard Regina’s newest and most desirable neighbourhood of Harbour Landing.

Harbour Landing Harbour Landing sells itself as a place where people can live, play, shop and work. The urban village offers all of the comforts and conveniences of city living – walking paths and parks, restaurants and retail stores, recreation and entertainment opportunities – without losing its neighbourhood feel. “The whole concept being planned for Harbour Landing is really quite unique,” says Wilson. Wilson is impressed with the level of thought that has been put into Harbour Landing’s design. Homebuyers in the area can see exactly what their neighbourhood has to offer before they move in. “The parks are already there. The trees are already planted. I really like how the developer has planned everything out and thought ahead. I live out there and I love it.”

Crosswinds Windsor Crossing’s new Crosswinds condo development, located at 5004 James Hill Road on the southern corner of Harbour Landing Drive, offers buyers a selection of 1038 square foot, two-bedroom condominiums to choose from. Each building in the development contains three suites: an upper level unit, a main floor unit and a lower level walkout. All suites have their own private entries. The front entrance in each unit includes a convenient coat closet and leads into an open concept kitchen, dining and living area. The large windows give each unit a bright and airy feel, provide plenty of natural light and offer great views of the surrounding neighbourhood. Two bedrooms are located on the opposite side of the main living area and are separated from each other by a large four-piece bathroom and laundry closet. Both bedrooms feature plenty of closet space and the master bedroom boasts a double closet. Each suite is outfitted with all new appliances, including a refrigerator, stove, microwave, dishwasher, washer and dryer. All blinds and window treatments are included. “They are basically move-in ready and come with everything you need,” says Wilson. Windsor Crossing has staggered the completion of each of the 72 suites in its Crosswinds development. This gives buyers the option of choosing a completed unit that they can move in to right away, or adding their personal touches to a suite that is still under construction. Windsor Crossing offers buyers a selection of flooring, cabinetry and paint colours to choose from and combine to suit their tastes. Buyers may also opt for certain upgrades such as granite countertops. Each Crosswinds condo offers outdoor living space with a covered deck/patio area accessed through the kitchen via sliding glass doors. A large park area located within the centre of the condo development provides a place where residents can relax, walk their pets or watch their children play.

46 46FineLifestylesREGINA FineLifestyles REGINA

Wilson says buyers have the option of purchasing one or more of the single-car garage units also located in the centre of the development. The main and upper level suites have two parking stalls and the lower level unit has one, but the garage units offer a great option for winter parking, extra storage space and even resale value. An ample visitor parking area is also available. Wilson also invites prospective buyers to visit the Windsor Crossing show home located in its Harbour Landing 46 Forty development. The show home features the same layout as the Crosswinds development and gives home buyers an opportunity to sample the same quality craftsmanship and care that will be given to their new home. Show home hours are 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Crosswinds Showsuite/Sales Centre is now open. FLR

FROM ONE PAD TO ANOTHER WITH FROGBOX With a myriad of items already on the to-do list, the last thing a person planning a move should have to worry about is scrounging for cardboard boxes to pack their belongings. Fortunately, Regina residents can now turn to FROGBOX for a more convenient, affordable and ecofriendly alternative. “Whether it’s a residential or a commercial move, the mission of FROGBOX Regina is to make moving easy and less stressful for both our customers and the environment,” says Greg Schmalenberg, co-owner of FROGBOX Regina. Greg and his brother, Dave Schmalenberg, first introduced the FROGBOX concept of plastic moving boxes and supplies, delivered directly to their clients’ doors, to the Regina market in July of 2011. The BC-born franchise had already garnered national attention after being featured on the CBC’s hit show, Dragon’s Den,

where it scored an investment from Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist, W. Brett Wilson. “One of the questions I ask myself before investing in a company is what problem is it solving?” says Wilson. “With FROGBOX, the answer is obvious. Everyone has experienced the hassle of moving and the limitations of flimsy cardboard boxes. By home delivering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to cardboard, FROGBOX is relieving stress for the 5.5 million Canadians who pack up every year. Why has FROGBOX grown from three locations in Canada to 23 throughout North America in the past six months? Because they make moving easier and who doesn’t want that?” “We really pride ourselves on delivering exceptional customer service and going beyond what’s normally expected of a moving supply company,” says Greg. As an example,

customers are given the option of choosing a two hour window for delivery when they first schedule their order. Greg says they regularly call clients the day before to narrow down a more specific delivery time, making it even easier for clients to plan their moving schedule. FROGBOX delivers packing boxes and materials onsite to both commercial and residential clients. The company takes customer service a step further by distributing the packing materials to the different areas of the home or commercial building where they are needed. The company collects its materials at the new site when the move is complete, whether that happens to be next door or across the country. The eco-friendly packing boxes are easy to handle and stack, and are much more durable than the cardboard alternative. Clients do not have to worry about their belongings becoming soiled or damaged during the move. FROGBOX also offers costeffective ‘bundles’ for most standard house sizes, making it easy for customers to estimate how many boxes they will need. Relocating to a new corporate location can be extremely stressful and expensive, but FROGBOX helps its clients get back to business as usual by speeding up the packing process and minimizing the impact moving has on the business’ bottom line. FROGBOX plastic boxes can also be used for temporary storage during renovations and restorations. “If you have a commercial or residential move coming up, cut down your to-do list by putting a call to FROGBOX at the top,” says Greg. “Our fast and friendly service and innovative packing solutions will make the move easier on your wallet and the environment, and give you peace of mind.” FLR

EVERYBODY WANTS A BEAUTIFUL YARD By Ryan Holota

5252FineLifestylesREGINA FineLifestyles REGINA

here are no homeowners who look for ways to make their yards less attractive, or who desire to fill their yard with weeds, unkempt plants, or brown, patchy grass. But many people simply don’t have the skills or the know-how to turn their space into something beautiful. Thankfully, Philip and Anton Rispens have everything that is needed to turn any yard into an oasis in the prairie. As graduates of The Netherlands’ School of Agriculture, Philip and Anton moved to Canada at the turn of the century and put their knowledge to work. In 2007 the brothers founded Rispens Landscaping to share their love of beautiful landscaping with the people of southern Saskatchewan. Landscaping is much more than sowing a bunch of grass seed and putting hedges around the perimeter of a yard. A well-planned yard will be a mix of many different types of plants, highlighted with beautiful objects and different materials. Care will be taken to select plants that not only look beautiful alone, but also complement each other. In an ideal world, plants will bloom at different times of the year so that you are always able to view lush green foliage and beautiful blossoms. Set against a backdrop of a sturdy, well-built fence, the yard may be punctuated with art, gazebos, decks, or patios. Stunning water features provide something that is not only beautiful to look at, but also a quiet background noise that blocks the sounds of a busy city. For those who want beauty with minimal maintenance, the Rispens are also experts on xeriscaping for our climate. Xeriscaping is the science of landscaping with materials and plants that are naturally suited for our environment, meaning you need to water less, weed less, and are able to enjoy the natural beauty more. Xeriscaping is not filling your yard with rock — rocks fill with leaves and debris, weeds continue to grow, and if not maintained, the yard soon looks sloppy. Xeriscaping involves selecting beautiful and hardy plants that naturally thrive in our climate and planting them so that they work together. If you desire something more elaborate, Rispens Landscaping are masters at designing and building custom water features with pools, waterfalls, and burbling streams. Working with talented craftsmen, Rispens doesn’t just create yards. They turn your outdoor spaces into an extension of your home. Your yard can become like an extra room in your house, the largest of all of the rooms, and a place for you to enjoy playing with family, a quiet coffee or glass of wine, or to entertain friends and business associates. Your yard should be more than a chore, it should be a sanctuary. And that is what Rispens Landscaping provides. Beautiful spaces. Decks, fences, garden structures, stonework, water features. Complete landscaping services and landscaping design. But most importantly, they provide beauty, function, and a sanctuary for you and your family. Whether you’re looking to have the most beautiful yard in the city or just want a quiet space to enjoy, phone Rispens Landscaping at 1-888-810-0508. MICHAEL HUBER: NOT YOUR AVERAGE REALTOR® ot your average REALTOR®? It’s true – he’s not. In an industry where everyone is searching for their own unique angle and professional edge, Michael Huber has already found his. Who is he, really? Depending on which day you meet him, Michael is a researcher, an intellectual or a musician playing guitar and singing with The MacEvoys. Michael is also a motorcycle enthusiast, an avid traveller and a listing specialist with Sutton Group Results Realty for properties in Regina and the surrounding area. Michael is, above all, always searching for the right fit for his clients. Michael is not your average REALTOR®. Why should you choose Michael for your listing? There are several reasons. Michael is a busy person who never sits idle. This means he is always working for you to market your property and ensure it is seen by as many potential buyers as possible. “There are two reasons why people don’t receive offers on their listings,” says Michael. “One reason is because it’s priced above what the market will bear, and the second is that it has not had adequate showings. You need people to see and visit your property. I make sure that your property is showcased in traditional media and MLS as well as non-traditional spaces and social media. I make radio and smaller local newspapers work to your advantage so that your listing is never overlooked.” Michael knows Regina well and is enthusiastic about seeing the city develop with a strong mix of properties serving many diverse people and income levels. Michael’s background in developing the city’s first up/down condo unit in the General Hospital area gave him insight into finding creative solutions to property questions and equipped him to pass that knowledge onto his clients. “It’s important to be continually educating myself about what’s developing in the real estate market. New ideas are often just what a client needs to move their property sale forward. I’m prepared to bring those ideas to my clients,” says Michael. He is ideally equipped to estimate your property value and negotiate on your behalf with his knowledge of the city, an understanding of regional real estate market trends and a professional background in economics. Working hard to keep your property competitive is another reason Michael is a REALTOR® of a different stripe. Michael’s commission is fixed at 3 per cent and never deviates. “If I am going to ensure your property is competitive, I make certain that I am too,” he says. “It is an advantage to sellers that I keep my commission low because it gives them more room to negotiate the price of a listing. TOP REGINA CHEF COMPETES AT SYSCO FOOD EXPO BY FLR STAFF PHOTOS CANDACE EPP

hef Milton Rebello of Regina’s Hotel Saskatchewan recently sqaured off with Chef Lorenzo Brazzini (Sasaktoon Club) and Chef Brent Lloyd (Simple Chef Saskatoon) in a culinary competition in

Saskatoon. On the table for the three chefs at Sysco’s Spring Food Expo—Fall Expo in Regina in September—was a berth in a national Canadian Culinary Federation (CCFCC) competition this summer.

A close race right down to the desserts, Rebello and his assistant, Young Chang, were barely edged out by Brazzini. Each chef was challenged to prepare three courses using Albacore tuna for the appetizer and pork belly and pork tenderloin in the main entrée. The dessert course was open. Brazzini won with a Paddock Wood Stout-braised pork belly, molasses, wild mushroom-stuffedpork tenderloin, prosciutto-saffron risotto and vegetable terrine with truffle sauce. See page 2 for Chef Rebello’s full menu. The two food expos are Saskatchewan’s biggest gatherings for restaurateurs and chefs to talk to suppliers and sample their products. FLR

FISH, FRESH FLAVOURS AND DINING TO REMEMBER BY TRILBY HENDERSON and RYAN HOLOTA PHOTOS SHAWN FULTON

ince first opening in 1999, the Mediterranean Bistro has been delighting guests with delicious fresh fish and seafood dishes that many would be surprised to find on the prairies. This focus on fresh fish and seafood is one of the main reasons owners Jason Carmen and Tasha Swain decided to purchase the bistro two years ago. They have added their own touches to the menu since then, but their philosophy has remained the same - to provide guests the most enjoyable dining experience possible by emphasizing fresh ingredients and unbeatable service.

60 60FineLifestylesREGINA FineLifestyles REGINA

Every item on the menu is made in-house by using top quality produce that is sourced locally whenever possible. All of the bistro’s stocks, soups and sauces are prepared from scratch and they use only organic AAA beef from Saskatchewan. Seafood is flown in from around the world and no matter where it comes from – trout from Lake Diefenbaker, oysters from the east coast or salmon from British Columbia – the bistro serves only the finest. Each dish is prepared to accentuate the flavour and texture of the seafood or fish. Customers can enjoy dishes like delightful shellfish scampi

served in a white wine sauce or the classic beer battered cod delivered with a side of guacamole and potato wedges. The menu changes regularly to reflect the seasonal nature of the dishes, but guests are always able to try the fish trio. This selection of three portions of fresh fish is prepared using three different sauces and is a great way to sample multiple fish varieties and even discover a new favourite. It is not just the seafood that draws guests to the bistro. There is also a selection of other dishes, including soups and salads,

The brie chocolate chicken, an eight ounce chicken breast topped with double cream brie and a chocolate-infused sour cherry sauce is a unique menu item. Another is the roasted beet, orange and fennel salad which comes tossed in zesty vinaigrette. Carmen says the signature beef wellington has become an extremely popular choice. It features beef tenderloin wrapped in puff pastry and stuffed with prosciutto, mushroom paté and dijon mustard. “I don’t think anyone else is doing it in Regina,” he says. “I get a lot of compliments. People are talking about it and coming back for it over and over again.” To top it all off, the Mediterranean Bistro offers a selection of delectable desserts

that includes tiramisu, mouth-watering white chocolate crème brulee with almond biscotti and ginger toffee cake topped with grand marniere crème anglais. The Mediterranean Bistro hosts a regular gourmet dinner club where food enthusiasts are treated to three or four course meals, theme nights, wine education and pairing events and live entertainment. The bistro also offers cooking classes and in-house catering. The Mediterranean Bistro is conveniently located at 2589 Quance Street East. Teagan Shalovelo I love going to Mediterranean Bistro. Their lunches are really well-priced, the environment is really nice, and the food is great. Grilled Tuna Steak With White Bean Arugula Salad And Anchovy Dressing Serves 4

INGREDIENTS 1 cup (250 mL) of dried white beans, soaked overnight in 2 cups (500 mL) of water, or 1 can (14 ounces/398 mL) of white beans, rinsed and drained 8 oil-packed anchovies, drained and patted dry The zest and juice of 1 lemon 2 tablespoons (30 mL) of olive oil 1 tablespoon (15 mL) of grainy mustard 2 handfuls of arugula leaves (about 4 ounces) 2 green onions, thinly sliced A sprinkle or two of salt and lots of freshly ground pepper 4 fresh tuna steaks (each 8 ounces and at least 1 inch thick), patted dry 1/4 cup (60 mL) of olive oil

PREPARATION

Grilling tuna is one of my favourite ways to enjoy this filet mignon of the sea. Tuna’s rich fattiness and luxurious texture allow it to grill as easily as any meat, and it’s at its best when its centre stays cool. Tuna’s big grill flavours work well with other strong flavours, like briny anchovy dressing over a rich white bean salad tossed with sharp, peppery arugula. If you’re using dried beans, simmer them until tender, about an hour and possibly longer. Drain and set aside while you ready the salad. In a salad bowl, mash the anchovies into a thick paste with a fork. Add the lemon zest, lemon juice, oil, and mustard, then continue mashing until you form a smooth dressing. Season to your taste with salt and pepper. Add the beans and toss until they’re thoroughly coated with the dressing. Top with the arugula and green onions but— for maximum crispiness—wait until just before serving to toss them with the marinating beans. Prepare and preheat your grill to its highest setting. Rub the tuna steaks with the olive oil. Lightly season the fish to your taste with salt and pepper. Grill, turning once, until the fish is cooked to your liking, 3 to 5 minutes per side for rare, 5 to 7 minutes for medium. Finish tossing the salad, then portion onto 4 plates and top with a slab of grilled tuna. Serve and share!

KITCHEN TIP Several types of fresh tuna are typically available from your fishmonger. The most common choice is bigeye or ahi, which is prized for its bright red flesh and rich flavour. Yellowfin is paler and also commonly available. Bluefin, the richest and meatiest of all, is rarely seen in markets, as most ends up in the hands of high-end sushi chefs or on a fast ride to the fish markets of Japan.

Triple-Treat Creamsicle Marshmallows Makes 24 large marshmallows or 48 smaller ones

INGREDIENTS CITRUS SUGAR CRUST 2 cups (500 mL) of water

CINNAMON CHILI CRUST

3 cups (750 mL) of sugar

1 Teaspoon (5 ml) of cinnamon

1/2 cup (125 mL) of sugar

1/4 Teaspoon (1 ml) of spicy chili powder

4 envelopes of unflavoured gelatin (1 box or 28 g) The zest of 1 lime 1/4 teaspoon (1 mL) of salt The zest of 1 lemon

1/2 Cup (125 ml) of sugar

COCONUT CRUST • 1/2 cup (125 mL) of shredded sweetened coconut

1 tablespoon (15 mL) of vanilla The zest of 1 orange 1 teaspoon (5 mL) of orange oil

PREPARATION Lightly oil a 13-by-9-inch (3 L) baking pan. Measure 1-1/4 cups (300 mL) of the water into a small pot. Carefully sprinkle in the sugar, taking care to avoid the inside edges of the pot. Without stirring, heat over medium-high heat. The heating water will dissolve the sugar into pure sugar syrup. Continue heating as the water rapidly boils, steams, and evaporates, concentrating the sugar, about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, measure the remaining 3/4 cup (175 mL) of water into the bowl of your stand mixer. Sprinkle the gelatin evenly over the water. Let the mixture stand, allowing the gelatin granules to rehydrate and swell, about 5 minutes. Fit your mixer with the whisk attachment and stir the gelatin mixture on the lowest setting. Carefully pour in the hot sugar syrup, taking care to direct the flow away from the sides of the bowl. Add the salt. To cut down on spatter, cover the bowl loosely with a kitchen towel, and gradually increase the mixer speed to the highest setting. Continue whipping until the mixture cools, stiffens, and becomes thick and fluffy, about 15 minutes. Add the vanilla and orange oil. Whip just until evenly mixed. Pour the mixture into the baking pan and smooth into a thick, even layer. Cover and cool until firm. Cut into even cubes. Sprinkle the coconut on a baking sheet and warm it up for 5 minutes or so until it’s sticky; place in a bowl. In 2 separate bowls, whisk together the citrus sugar crust and the cinnamon chili crust. Divide the marshmallows into 3 piles. Working with 1 pile of marshmallows and 1 coating at a time, toss a freshly cut marshmallow in the coating mixture until it’s evenly coated. Serve and share!

KITCHEN TIP Whipping the marshmallow cools the mixture, which encourages the gelatin to firm and strengthen. This in turn helps it absorb air and thus increase in volume.

Homemade marshmallows are an awesome family project. You can do remarkable things with sugar in your own kitchen. Whip and cool it with gelatin and you’ll be rewarded with one of the all-time great treats—a tray of freshly cut glistening, fluffy white marshmallows. Then enjoy them with these different tasty crusts. From: Chef Michael Smith’s Kitchen by Chef Michael Smith. Copyright © Michael Smith, 2011. Robin’s nest Robin is a best-selling author in her own right and is also one of the most soughtafter new authors in publishing today. She’s also on the board of the Dr. Phil foundation, a not-for-profit charitable organization committed to supporting organizations and programs that address the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual needs of children and families.

He owes it all to Oprah McGraw met Oprah Winfrey in 1995, while he was on her defence team in a lawsuit brought against her by Texas cattle ranchers. Several years later, in 2002, her production company created his show. Earlier this year, he told an interviewer: “People say, ‘Wasn’t Oprah a big factor in launching Dr. Phil.’ She wasn’t a big factor, she was the factor.” Now, his show appears on Winfrey’s network, OWN.

Energy bar bust In 2003, Dr. Phil began selling diet products including shakes and energy bars bearing the name “Shape It Up, Woo, Woo!” Unfortunately, some of his customers weren’t as enthusiastic. After a class-action lawsuit disputing the claims McGraw made for the products, he reached a $10 million settlement with them.

A winning personality here and abroad In 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007, Dr. Phil was nominated for Daytime Emmys in the category of Outstanding Talk Show Host for Dr. Phil. In 2004, he also won the TV Prize at the Aftonbladet TV Prize,

Sweden in the category of TV Personality - Male (Baesta utlaendska manliga tvpersonlighet).

He’s on Sesame Street… sort of Sesame Street has introduced a character that parodies Dr. Phil called “Dr. Feel.”

He’s retired… sort of Dr. Phil officially retired as a psychologist in 2006. Two years later he said on The Today Show that he was no longer practicing psychology on the show. He told another interviewer, “I’m not the Hush Puppies, pipe and ‘Let’s talk about your mother’ psychologist.” Instead, he seems more like the tough-but-fair high school sports coach: encouraging, scolding and motivating.

Keepin’ it real… real folksy Along with common-sense sayings such as “Failure is no accident,” Dr. Phil, like fellow Texan George Bush, draws on his background to create a downhome image. Sample nugget of Dr. Phil’s wisdom: “You don’t need a rope to pinch a stranger’s butt.” We don’t know what it means, but we like how it sounds.

Power Within leadership seminars offer more than just cutting edge insight from internationally celebrated personalities. They offer relevant-to-today leadership strategies that promise to be gamechangers in the boardroom and lifechangers that give you new perspective on your personal relationships. Promoters of the event say participants can expect to come away with the fundamental tools to establish strong and compassionate leadership and the capacity and know-how to leverage positive psychology to inspire and enable positive change. Each year over 300 WLF patients receive surgery and support through WLF’s award-winning program. There are offices in Saskatoon, Regina, Calgary and Lethbridge, with trained facilitators throughout the country. Research is a priority, too, and WLF is involved in a clinical study researching weight loss outcomes with cognitive behavioural therapy.

For nearly four years, Weight Loss Forever (WLF) has been supporting people who qualify for bariatric weight loss surgery. Over 98 per cent choose the vertical sleeve procedure. Patients eat less and feel full sooner with a smaller stomach, and most enjoy astounding results.

WLF’s chief bariatric surgeon is Mayo Clinic-trained Dr. Liza Pompa, MD, Ph.D, AFACS, and director of LIMARP Surgical Unit. Board-certified in both the United States and Mexico, Dr. Pompa is an international leader in bariatric surgery.

“People think that it’s a complicated and dangerous surgery,” says Melanie, “Or that you can never eat normally again. You do. The reality is that it’s quite safe, takes about 30 minutes and is no more risky than any routine surgery as long as you are in a dedicated bariatric hospital with a qualified surgeon,” she emphasizes.

After a two-year review by the Surgical Review Corporation, WLF’s hospital was recently designated as an International Bariatric Center of Excellence, one of only 18 in the world. To receive the designation, the hospital and WLF met and exceeded stringent requirements in three areas: the hospital, the surgeon, and the bariatric program.

Dr. L. Pompa, MD, Ph.D, AFACS

“We’re very proud of this designation,” says Melanie. “We’re a world-renowned bariatric hospital with exceedingly high standards, excellent patient care and compassionate support. What is at stake is our patients’ health and well-being,and our license. Their team told Dr. Pompa that we are one of the Top10 hospitals they inspected anywhere in the world. “All of us who have been obese are in the same boat. We’ve been damaged. There are medical reasons for weight gain and the solution is also medical,” Melanie says. “That’s not to say there aren’t realities like food addictions and emotional eating. But to blame obesity on lack of will power or self-control is simply ignorance. The success of hundreds of our patients proves that! Vanity has very little to do with this–what truly matters is having a long and healthy life.”

Real Lives Transformed Heather McClinton, Sedley Heather was on the waiting list for bariatric surgery in Regina, but there were a lot of rules. To qualify, she was told candidates had to lose 25 per cent of their weight on their own, then keep it off for up to a year. “One of the things that comes with extreme weight problems is depression,” explains Heather, “so I defy anyone who is depressed with that much weight to do that. I had diabetes. I was on high blood pressure medication. I’m almost 60. I told my doctor, ‘I have to do something now.’” In June 2011, she had her surgery through WLF. Thrilled to be healthy and active, Heather just returned from a 16-day trip to Egypt. “I can’t imagine going down into that second pyramid had I been 250 pounds,” she laughs. “And I would have not got on the back of a camel! I never missed an event or a tour. I was able to keep up.”

Hea

Today Heather weighs 169 pounds. “Within two months, I was off all diabetes meds,” Heather reports. “By mid-October, my doctor said I’m diabetes free. I calculated the cost of the surgery and what I was paying for diabetes meds. I will have my surgery paid for in three years and be free of the other health problems. It’s amazing to me that this program isn’t covered by our health care.”

While the surgery and support from WLF has changed her life radically, it’s the every day things that have a big impact; “I’m so much more active. I just can’t believe I feel so good.”

Jim Cairns, Langbank When Jim Cairns tipped the scale at 362 pounds, his doctor told him he needed to be on oxygen. His doctor said the wait for weight loss surgery might be 36 months. “I wasn’t sure I was going to be around that long.” Jim’s nephew successfully had surgery with Weight Loss Forever (WLF) the year before. That prompted Jim to “get the ball rolling.” “It’s like Old Home Week even if you’re going in for the very first time,” says Jim, who had his surgery in September 2011. “You feel so comfortable right away.” So far he’s lost 130 pounds and anticipates losing another 20 to 30. Always on “some sort of diet” since his teens, Jim had high blood pressure in high school. The Montreal surgery would have cost between $50-$70,000, so Jim and Ellen were pleased that WLF’s Centre of Excellence was a fraction of that cost and the surgeon was Mayo Clinic-trained. WLF’s program covered everything he needed and his facilitator, Julie, offered daily support. “The support from WLF is just great. The whole experience was remarkable.”

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

SURGERY

What is bariatric weight loss surgery? According to the Canadian Medical Association, 2009, weight-loss surgery was the only permanent treatment of severe of morbid obesity. Diet and exercise on their own has not been shown to be effective.

What is the “Sleeve”? The Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) induces weight loss by restricting food intake. About 80 per cent of the stomach is removed during the half-hour procedure; the stomach then has the shape of a “sleeve.” This is the least invasive and most successful permanent weight-loss surgery available.

How much does it cost? The cost can vary depending on each patient’s unique situation, but many patients find they save money each month because of the much lower costs of food and medication.

Is it covered by provincial or private health insurance?

What are the surgeon’s qualifications?

It can be, depending on your insurance and which province you live in. For all patients, the cost of the procedure is recognized by Revenue Canada as a medical expense. Financing is also available on approved credit.

Dr. Liza Maria Pompa is one of the top surgeons in the field of bariatrics. She is board-certified in the United States and in Mexico, trained at the Mayo Clinic and the European Institute of Telesurgery in France. As Professor of Laparoscopic Surgery Training Programs, she teaches innovative surgical techniques, and she diabetes.

What kind of weight loss can patients expect?

What if I have other health issues? Many patients undergoing weight loss surgery have obesity-related health conditions. WLF has an in-depth mandatory medical and psychological screening to ensure patient safety.

the risks of surgery. In fact, the risk of mortality five years after weight loss surgery is 89 per cent less than remaining obese.

Can I return to eating normally after the surgery?

FRASER WATSON

Yes! WLF has developed dietary guidelines from the first few days and weeks to lifetime maintenance. Stomach volume is reduced, but it functions normally and absorbs nutrients normally and the reduction in the hormone ghrelin significantly reduces food cravings.

What about support before, during and after? We have one-to-one counseling, support groups and activity programs, as well as an online patient information system for research and tracking. Research shows patients with support lose more than 32 per cent more weight and report a much higher quality of life than those who don’t have support.

I’m concerned about going to Mexico Choosing a hospital and surgical team outside of Canada can be very risky. Not all hospitals even meet Canadian or U.S. standards. In fact, some Canadians end up with serious complications because they’ve been sent to unsafe places or tried to go it alone. We believe “medical tourism” for the treatment of obesity is unethical.

Why isn’t the hospital located in Canada? According to the Canadian Medical Association in 2009, there is 600 times more demand for bariatric surgery than there is capacity to do it. The average wait times can be as high as 13 years. Salaries here are several times greater than in Mexico, making surgery too expensive for most people. WLF’s Canadian-owned state-of-the-art hospital and individual support is an excellent solution. FLS

EXPERTAdvice People can love their hearing aids

“I feel like I’ve come alive!” “I think I was losing my self esteem.” “It’s unbelievable how much greater my response is to my family and friends!”

Dr. Debbie Davis Aud (C), Au.D Doctor of Audiology

Eastside Audiology & Rehabilitation Inc. 1830b Victoria Ave E. Regina, Sk. 306.359.3277 www.lifewithsound.com

Everyone is well aware of the negative connotation associated with hearing aids, but I want to share some of the reactions I’ve received recently. These reactions are genuine responses that my patients have given when asked how they are doing with their recently fit hearing aids. They really get it. They get how integral hearing is to life, communication and relationships with friends and family. Those who haven’t experienced a loss of hearing may not truly understand and value the gift of hearing. I say that because when it’s lost and then regained, it really seems miraculous. I’ve also seen these miraculous results and responses with parents of children who need pressure equalization tubes put in their eardrums to release the fluid build-up. Once inserted, the preschooler’s language delay takes a 360 degree turn and the child starts waxing eloquently. I’ve seen it with patients of progressive and profound hearing loss who require surgically implanted cochlear implants. One of these patients now celebrates her “hook-up” day for the cochlear implant as her new birthday! And yes, I see it with patients who don’t require surgical help,

but who need hearing aid help. It really is true - people can love their hearing aids. I know it must be difficult to believe that people can love their hearing aids. It is especially difficult to believe when one sees that the national average for hearing aid returns is 20 per cent. This statistic doesn’t include the many who have likely kept hearing aids despite being dissatisfied. What I propose is simple - it’s not the hearing aid that one should be dissatisfied with, but rather the quality of service. In one of my patient’s words, “It is unbelievable that there are people out there spending good money and still not getting the service and proper help they need. “ Countless times I’ve had patients come in from other clinics that have failed them. These clinics may very well be doing their best by seeing their patients dozens of times but never finding the miracle. Luckily, I have a formula for success. This formula involves proper education, following best practice guidelines like always using real-ear objective measures, and really listening to my patients. These things result in my super low return rate of less than 5 per cent. This formula also results in my adopted patients from other clinics achieving the same success as my own patients. You too can love your hearing aids! FLR

here comes a time in every life when we can use a little extra help. Whether you need someone to run errands while you recover from an injury, or to ease the burden of household chores so that you can continue to live independently in your own home, or to look after a loved one so you can take a needed break and return to them a better caregiver, you can put your trust in Bayshore Home Health to provide the help you need.

This well established Canadian company has been providing personalized care to clients since 1966, and now employs more than 9,000 caregivers at 51 branches across the country, including both Saskatoon and Regina. Brian Smyth, area director for the Regina region, says Bayshore offers the “widest range of home care services”, including nursing, personal care, respite and end-of-life care, home support and companionship. They also accommodate unique requests,

such as cooking a traditional ethnic meal for a client while his family is out of town, helping another to prepare her flowerbeds in the spring, or escorting an elderly gentleman on a social outing. Smyth says the company strives to match its clients’ needs with the complementary skills and interests of its employees. Bayshore Home Health employs more than 50 people in Regina alone, including nurses, care aids, and home support

staff, as well as non-health related service providers such as yard maintenance workers and estheticians. Each highly qualified and carefully selected Bayshore employee is certified or licenced in their specific areas of expertise. “We try to be quite consistent with our care so that clients will see the same one or two people on each occasion,” says Smyth. This allows the client to develop a level of comfort with their Bayshore team and helps keep the lines of communication open between clients, their families and service providers. Smyth says Bayshore’s services can be completely customized to meet each client’s individual needs, whether they require simple care for one hour at a time or more involved care over the long term. They also work within the client’s schedule, and offer services to complement those already being provided by family caregivers or public health.

Bayshore Home Health makes life easier for clients on many levels by providing physical, emotional and even mental care. For example, by giving clients the option of having blood work done in the comfort of their own home, they not only make life more convenient, but relieve clients of the stress and fear associated with venturing out in inclement weather to reach a medical clinic. Individual clients aren’t the only ones to benefit from Bayshore’s services. Smyth adds that it can be a huge comfort to family members to know that they do not have to shoulder the responsibility of caring for an injured or aging loved one alone. “It’s a relief for the families knowing that a loved one is being taken care of by someone they trust and who is reliable,” he says. At the end of the day, Bayshore Home Health can proudly say they have made a difference to their clients by improving their quality of life, dignity and independence. “We’re helping to keep clients healthier and happier in their own homes,” says Smyth. DERMALOJIK WORKS (TOGETHER) FOR YOU re you considering a medical esthetic treatment and have questions? Thousands of people research the topic and its availability in Regina every month. People approach medical esthetics for many reasons and with a general curiosity and questions about the procedure and its impact on lifestyle. Many choose medical esthetic and registered nurse Karen Kohm and her Dermalojik business because of the treatments offered and the people on her team. Karen and Dr. Darrell Avram, M.D., ophthalmologist and onsite medical director at Dermalojik, are highly educated and skilled in their field. They work together to create the perfect plan for you to help attain and maintain results you will love. Dermalojik offers their clients three highly sought-after treatments and products: Botox®, Juvéderm and the Obagi Nu-Derm System. These procedures are gaining in the mainstream beauty industry and questions still exist about what exactly they do. Karen explains, “I spend a lot of time educating my clients about these treatments. Botox® and Juvéderm offer similar results for appearance sake in the anti-aging procedures, but through entirely different avenues.”

Botox® and Juvéderm offer similar results for appearance sake in the anti-aging procedures, but through entirely different avenues. Karen explains

Botox is a localized injection that works to relax the muscles under the skin’s surface that contract and cause fine lines and wrinkles. Juvéderm is also an injection used to fill deep wrinkles and folds from the inside by rebuilding lost facial collagen that diminishes as we age. Botox and Juvéderm work particularly well on specific regions of the face including the area between the eyes and at the corners of the mouth. This makes them ideal partners to work in tandem for your anti-aging regime. The Obagi Nu-Derm System is a skin care regimen infused with Retin-A which is proven to fight aging by reducing fine lines and firming skin. It improves clarity, skin tone, reduces hyperpigmentation and even inhibits future skin damage. You will consult with Karen and Dr. Avram to co-produce your ideal plan when considering Botox®, Juvéderm or the Obagi Nu-Derm skin care system. “Our clients see the results right away and we always take the time to educate, follow up and plan for maintenance of your results,” says Karen. “It’s important that you understand the treatments and how they can best benefit you while working in synchronicity with one another. The results are truly remarkable and nothing has been proven to work more effectively.” Karen and Dr. Avram are the real reasons people are raving about Dermalojik. Their combined experience in the esthetic medical and beauty industries totals nearly 30 years. They have a particular focus on Botox® and nobody understands better the effective combination of medical esthetic treatments and complimentary patient care. Karen and Dr. Avram want you to love what you see when you look at yourself. They are invested in individualized patient care and in you.

Advice from your OPTOMETRIST HEALTH & WELLNESS

Ultraviolet (UV) Light and Your Eyes

Dr. Myles Bokinac

Optometrist Advance Eye Care Center 500-4010 Pasqua St. Regina, Sk. 306.586.7036 www.advanceeyecarecenter.ca

Spring is here and the sun is shining. That lovely bright sun comes out and we start to remember to wear our sunglasses. But did you wear them all winter long? Ultraviolet light (UV) exposure is not strictly a concern in the sunny summer months, but all year round. In fact, UV exposure for the eyes can often be higher in the winter. The sun creates UV light from above, but the snow reflecting the light back up gives our eyes additional exposure from below. UV light exposure is cumulative over your lifetime and 80 per cent of that exposure occurs before the age of 18. Infants and children should always wear sunglasses with 100 per cent UV protection when outdoors. Early sun protection helps reduce the lifetime UV exposure and should result in a lower incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and delay the onset of cataracts. UV protection is important for patients of all ages but especially critical for children. UV light damages the eyes and contributes to the development of conditions such as cataracts, AMD and skin cancer in the eyelids. The many options for UV protection include non-

prescription or prescription sunglasses, clip-ons or Transitions© lenses. Sunglasses do not need to be expensive to protect your eyes, but they must provide 100 per cent UV protection. Repeated cleaning of lenses with UV coating may wear off the UV coating and cause loss of UV protection. All of our sunwear has 100 per cent UV protection in the lens itself. We have high quality sunglasses with polarized impact resistant lenses for infants and children from $15. Adults can choose from a huge selection of sunglasses to fit all styles and budgets from $50. We carry brands like D&G, Gucci, Ray-Ban, Oakley, Bolle and many more. Come in and look at 500-4010 Pasqua St. in Regina or call us at 306-586-7036.

family quietly enters the showroom and looks around at the selection of memorials. “This one over here is nice,” says an older gentleman. Brian Pawliw is working on a marker for a golf course in the production area of the retail outlet. He puts down his tools and walks into the showroom with a smile and a warm handshake. Thirty minutes later he returns to the backroom.

made of stone, W.P. Monumental can probably help you find what you are looking for. Owned and operated by Brian and Linda Pawliw, the business has been in operation since 1988, when it was founded by Walter Pawliw, Brian’s father.

“We’ve done nine monuments for that family over the years,” he says. “Sadly, it’s time for them to purchase another one.” This is a common story at W.P. Monumental Co. Ltd. W.P. Monumental is a provider of granite memorials as well as granite landscaping products such as benches, stepping stones, birdbaths, pet memorials and sculptures. If it is

“It’s all about compassion, honesty, and respect,” Brian says. “A lot of the time, people come into the store without knowing what they want, what is available, or what is possible. Buying a memorial for a loved one is very difficult. It brings closure to the whole process, and many people find it very upsetting. Because of this, it is really important to understand and grasp their emotional state. Everyone is different; some purchase a monument the following week, some wait a month, a year or several years.”

Word of the exceptional service and caring attitude provided by the Pawliws has spread far and wide. They provide service not only in the City of Regina, but also across the large majority of rural Saskatchewan. And because they deal direct with the quarry, they eliminate the middle man, providing you with high quality granite at affordable prices. Recently, Pawliw has seen an increase in the number of pre-need sales. This occurs when a person or couple makes their funeral arrangements ahead of time, including the selection of a monument. This removes the stress of making these decisions from your family during a time of grief. It also alleviates the concern of burdening your family members with an additional expense. FLR

The Beauty of Ultrasound:

RADIOLOGY ASSOCIATES OF REGINA

magine being the one to introduce a mother to her unborn child, giving her a glimpse of her baby’s little nose for the very first time. Or imagine being able to see a heart from every angle possible while it beats safely in the chest. These are everyday realities for the radiologists, sonographers (ultrasound technologists) and other staff at Radiology Associates of Regina (RAR). It is work they know changes lives and enhances the community. “It’s the development of life. You can see that small flicker of a heartbeat at six weeks, and watch life grow before your eyes. It’s amazing,” says Dr. Ian Suchet, a fetal ultrasound expert and one of the many RAR radiologists who specializes in this field. Dr. Suchet has been a radiologist for more than 25 years and he leads the ultrasound team at RAR. His expertise has been part of more than thirty academic articles and a textbook on fetal ultrasound. He is a teacher and an amazing doctor who is incredibly passionate about his work.

88 88FineLifestylesREGINA FineLifestyles REGINA

Every day, Dr. Suchet and his team at RAR perform more than 40 fetal ultrasounds. These include a mother’s 20 week scan, which is an anatomical checkup of the fetus. These scans are routine during pregnancies, but RAR’s thoroughness and the amount of time the team allots to each patient is unique. Radiologists and sonographers at RAR spend up to an hour examining each patient during a 20 week obstetrical scan. This allows the staff to be as thorough as possible, and the available technology at RAR enables the team to perform 3D/4D imaging during fetal ultrasounds. These realistic images allow parents to see their baby’s facial features and movements for the very first time. At the end of the scan there is time for the rest of the family to bond with the baby. This experience increases the bond between the mother and her unborn child. The technology also provides the benefit of allowing Dr. Suchet and his team to clearly see the fetus and be confident in their diagnosis.

“We can reassure patients that everything is normal, when it is normal and be sure that we are correct,” says Dr. Suchet. Each day, Dr. Suchet sends parents home with the peace of mind knowing that their baby is healthy. More importantly, Dr. Suchet and his team have the ability to diagnose early any abnormalities that may impact the type of care a baby requires once it is born. This early diagnosis gives each baby the best chance of being born healthy. If there are any abnormalities, like a cleft lip or heart defect, the advanced technology employed at RAR allows doctors to make an accurate diagnosis and begin planning postnatal treatment at an early stage. RAR is a referral center for suspected fetal cardiac abnormalities. During a routine 20 week scan, doctors will image the four chambers of the heart. These types of scans pick up approximately 40 to 60 per cent of fetal heart defects. The ultrasound team at RAR performs full 2D and 4D imaging of the heart and major vessels

arising from the heart, allowing them to evaluate the heart from any direction. This enables the team to diagnose 96 per cent of major fetal cardiac abnormalities, a variance that can save lives. Parents can prepare for the safest delivery possible because these exams are so thorough. Arrangements can be made to deliver in hospitals equipped to care for the baby and its unique needs. The early diagnosis also allows the doctors in the delivery room to have the opportunity to fully understand what will be required of them when the baby is born. All of this preparation means each of these deliveries can go as smoothly as possible. The ultrasound team at RAR not only specializes in fetal ultrasounds. It also has dedicated radiologists and sonographers with experience in gynecological ultrasound and breast imaging. Both are extremely important aspects of women’s health, and are often used in conjunction with other imaging modalities to offer the most thorough diagnosis.

Musculoskeletal imaging is another important area of RAR ultrasound. This type of imaging can diagnose tendon, ligament and muscle issues. It gives doctors a more complete picture of certain injuries, and can help make a diagnosis that was otherwise unknown. This wide range of expertise comes from the more than 50 years that RAR has been providing Southern Saskatchewan with the highest quality of diagnostic imaging. Their ultrasound department has often been commended for its attention to detail. Other centres refer their high risk and complicated obstetrical exams to RAR because of their experience. The RAR team of radiologists is one of the largest and most experienced in the province. RAR radiologists are the same group that works in Regina’s hospitals and interprets imaging examinations for many of South Saskatchewan’s centers outside Regina. They use the most cutting edge technology, and in the clinic setting, they have expertise in most forms of diagnostic

imaging, including mammography, fluoroscopy, X-ray, ultrasound and RQHR CT scans*. Most of the radiologists and technologists have local roots and most have very specialized, in-depth training. The next time you require diagnostic imaging tests, ask your doctor about RAR. Make sure you are receiving the best diagnosis for you. With just one call, a family can take care of all such needs with unprecedented convenience. The professionals at Regina Memorial Gardens don’t treat all their customers the same way - and it’s a fact they’re proud of. There was a time when local families had few choices beyond standardized options that had little to do with the individual being commemorated. Regina Memorial Gardens developed a different approach, one which they’ve continued to evolve and adapt to serve modern needs in a far more personal way. Today’s arrangements are designed to wholly respect individuality, taste, faith and heritage while still adhering to a chosen budget. To provide this degree of personalization, they offer an everincreasing range of traditional and innovative options for remembrance. From the classic beauty of engraved monuments or benches, to cremation rocks or trees along the unique Nature Walk, to the glassfront niches in the stately mausoleum, the room for customization is practically endless. Funerals and receptions are caringly crafted to create ceremonies that are as simple or elaborate as desired. All attention is focused on the life being celebrated, and this brings deeper comfort and a sense of connection for family during their time of loss.

Making your plans your way With such an array of choices available for individual expression, an increasing number of people choose to make their own plans in advance. Planning ahead ensures personal control over decisions, and guarantees wishes will be carried out with no extra emotional or financial pressure on loved ones. By taking the time to investigate options today in a calm and relaxed frame of mind, each person can stop to ask themselves: “How do I want to be remembered?” And however extraordinary the answer may be, regardless of how traditional or unusual the request, the planning professionals of Regina Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home work creatively and resourcefully to provide a one-of-a-kind remembrance, a unique and lasting statement for generations to come.

The benefits of planning ahead don’t end there. By purchasing now, the rising cost of cemetery and funeral arrangements can be effectively ‘frozen’ at today’s prices and at today’s dollar value, resulting in greater financial ease and long-term savings that can reach into the thousands. Pre-plans made at Regina Memorial Gardens are also transferable between their affiliated arrangement partners at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens and Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Saskatoon, or from any other associated provider across Canada. “Planning ahead with us provides the full package,” says Tidridge. “Cemetery, cremation, monuments and tributes, funeral and reception, all of it.” he smiles. “And every aspect is completely personalized. People rely on us to protect their most precious memories and that is the message of care behind everything we do.” Whether a family is making plans in advance or at the time of immediate need, the local professionals at Regina

Memorial Gardens embrace, respect and honour the differences that make each life - a special life. FLR

EXPERTAdvice Who’s injecting your Botox®?

Medical Aesthetics Nurse Dermalojik Medical Aesthetics Cityview Center #500, 2550-15th Ave. Regina, SK (306) 522-1078 info@Dermalojik.com www.dermalojik.com

Which 1* are you?

The medical aesthetic industry continues to be one of the fastest growing sectors of the Canadian economy. Millions of Canadians are seeking ways to appear refreshed and rejuvenated by using Botox® to correct fine lines and wrinkles, and Juvéderm to correct deep folds and creases. There is no way to turn back the clock, but there are ways to look younger and feel better while the clock is still ticking. This expanding profession offers many consumer benefits. These include a wider selection of businesses to choose from, a better and wider range of services and stable consumer costs resulting from increased competition. The other side of the equation is not as transparent. The consumer may not be aware of the negative implications that can emerge when an increasing number of medical cosmedic practices compete for consumer dollars. Every person should be diligent when selecting a cosmedic injector. Look for three critical attributes before undergoing a medical aesthetic treatment such as Botox® or Juvéderm. The cosmedic injector should be properly educated and trained. Look for a professional with an extensive knowledge

98 FineLifestylesREGINA

of the field and a wide range of practical experience. This type of experience and knowledge does not come from a weekend course. It takes many years to develop the skill and understand the behaviour of the drugs. Botox® and Juvéderm injections are cosmedic, but they are still medical procedures that need to be performed in a medical setting with an on-site physician who specializes in cosmedic injectables. The cosmedic injector should provide a safe and comfortable environment that gives the patient complete confidentiality and trust. Proper client candidate selection must be a priority for your cosmedic injector. Clients should only be cleared to receive a procedure if they are compatible for that specific procedure. A proper assessment is important. These three simple rules provide the clearest way to decide whether a cosmedic injector is the right choice for you. Remember to always trust your instincts. You should feel comfortable and safe knowing that you made the right decision. For more information about cosmedic injection practices and procedures contact Karen Kohm. FLR

LAUNCH YOURSELF INTO SUMMER By FLS Staff

104 104FineLifestylesREGINA FineLifestyles REGINA

ith summer around the corner, it’s time to have a little fun on the water With more than 100,000 lakes and a vast selection of rivers, Saskatchewan has long enjoyed a reputation as a watersports hot spot. Whether you have a need for speed or are seeking peaceful, quiet solitude, you’ll find just what you want on Saskatchewan’s waters. The rise of adventure sports and new technology has caused an explosion in popularity for watersports enthusiasts today have more activities available to them than ever before. And just as snowboarding eclipsed skiing as the No. 1 winter activity, so too is wakeboarding taking the top spot from water skiing. If you’re gearing to try something new this summer, this is your sport. Wakeboarding is like a combination of snowboarding, waterskiing and skateboarding, or a cross between mono skiing and surfing. Although it may contain an essence of all these activities, wakeboarding is most definitely a watersport in its own right. If you can water ski, then it’s likely that you’ll pick up wakeboarding without too much trouble. Using edging techniques, wakeboard riders cruise outside of the wake, or cut rapidly in toward it. As the rope tightens the rider gains speed and momentum. Jumps are performed by hitting the wake and launching into the air. Once a rider improves in the sport, he or she can progress to tricks as high up as 20 feet. Wakeboarding is said to be the fastest growing watersport in the world. If you’re new to this world, introduce yourself to this amazing activity through the coaching of a certified instructor. Each year Water Ski and Wakeboard Saskatchewan (WSWS) operates a series of day clinics designed to help you get more out of these two sports. WSWS aims to enhance everyone’s experience no matter their skill level. Their certified watersport coach arrives at your location with a Nautique Tournament Boat and all the gear needed for water ski or wakeboard. A typical day begins at 9 a.m. with watersport lessons being given all day, tailored to your skill level. There is room in the Nautique boat for a few spectators as well. If wakeboarding is a little too exciting for some, the province’s picturesque lakes and larger rivers are great for all kinds of boating. You can bring your own boat and gear or rent what you need at many lakeside destinations.Boating in our province means great facilities, reasonable prices, uncrowned waters and friendly people. If you can do it on a lake, you can do it in Saskatchewan. Explore secluded rivers, streams and coves by canoe or kayak.Catch a prairie breeze in your sails—Lake Diefenbaker is a great sailing location. Go houseboating with the whole family or that special gang of friends. Whatever activity you choose, the important thing is that you’re getting out and enjoying the water. FLEW

WANT THE BEST? GO WITH FLOE! pring is finally here. The snow is gone and the ice has left the lake. You’ve been out to clean the cabin once, and it’s time to put in the docks and the boat lift. You know the drill: round up the neighbours, get into the hip waders, struggle with the heavy sections of dock, pound in rebar, muscle the boat lift around - twice every year, once to put it in, and once to take it out. Do yourself a favour in 2012. Call Dale Kaup at Western Boat Lift before

110 110FineLifestylesREGINA FineLifestyles REGINA

you go out there. Western Boat Lift is Saskatchewan’s exclusive dealer for FLOE boat lifts, docks and utility trailers and for Sunstream boatlifts.

add decks - the options are endless. The system uses no bolts and requires no drilling. You can even stand on the dock while levelling it with a cordless drill.”

“It’s hard to believe that a husband and wife can have a really enjoyable experience installing a lift or dock system,” explains Kaup. “When you have products that are engineered properly they go together easily. The FLOE dock system is completely modular. You can add to it in future years, change the configuration,

Docks are one of the best investments a cabin owner can make. “I like to say that adding a dock is the cheapest way to increase your lakefront property,” says Kaup. “You’re creating useable space right on the water. You can use it just to walk on, or a slightly larger space will accommodate tables and chairs and even

a fire pit to enjoy evenings on the water.” For an unusual twist, consider setting your dock up on dry land. FLOE docks are so convenient to set up and so durable that they can also be set up to function like a deck. There is no need to dig foundations, pour concrete or build from scratch. FLOE docks are built with custom extruded aluminum, engineered to last and are completely maintenance free. Even the deck surface is aluminum, and is available in a gray or wood grain finish called Alumagrain. Our goal is to accommodate your needs, whether you are looking for a roll-in, post-sectional or floating dock. FLOE also produces a line of boat lifts that are just as exciting as their docks. FLOE boat lifts have many patented features, including EasyLevel™ legs and the whisper-quiet Vertical Screw Drive lifts. These boat lifts are the perfect answer to most lift problems. Our huge selection of accessories such as canopies, solar chargers and remote control operation to customize your lift, will make your lake experience more enjoyable than ever. We also carry the full line of Sunstream boat lifts for those who prefer hydraulic boat lifts. These lifts are very fast, operated with remote control and powered by a 12 volt battery with solar charger. The SunLift™ ranges in size from 2,000 to 24,000 pound capacity. Sunstream is also the leader in floating boat lift technology. Their

FineLifestylesREGINA 111 FineLifestyles REGINA 111

hydraulic FloatLift™ ranges in capacity from 6,000 to 24,000 pounds, is operated with remote control and is solar powered. Only these floating boatlifts can accommodate the HoverCover canopy. These units are very fast, taking as little as 18 seconds to launch your boat and 25 seconds to raise it fully out of the water. Sunstream’s most recent introduction is the exciting new V-Lift™. This floating lift is revolutionizing the air displacement lift market. With one to two minutes launching/lifting speeds, no powerpack on the dock, no mounts to the dock, and no air hoses, this lift is very versatile and easy to use. It has a 7,000 pound capacity and can be easily expanded into an 11,000 pound lift with a simple add-on kit. This impressive lift will accommodate any boat that has up to an 8 ft. 6 in. wide beam while fitting into a 10 foot wide marina slip. The possibilities are endless to place your boat in a lift at the marina. When you visit or call, Western Boat Lift will ask a lot of questions to make sure you get the perfect product for your location. “We don’t just want to sell you something and then never see

112

you again. We’re really interested in helping you out for the long haul,” explains Kaup. “Details like the depth of water you’re dealing with, the angle of the shore and the type of lake bottom – these all make a difference. Getting the right product will make your experience that much better. Our two lines of boat lifts and complete lineup of docks enable us to solve almost any situation. We truly are your one stop shop for all your boat lift and dock needs.” What if you’re not from the Warman area? No problem, Western Boat Lift will come to you. You can see them at recreation shows across western Canada, and they’ll deliver and even install your dock for you anywhere. Western Boat Lift also caries Floe utility trailers and Truck Boss sled decks to allow you to transport your other toys quickly and easily. Stop making your docks and boat lift a chore. THE FORT IS

CALLING… CALLING… CALLING BY FLR STAFF PHOTOS SHAWN FULTON

magine a city the size of Regina filling the Qu’Appelle Valley where Fort Qu’Appelle now stands, spreading up the rolling valley ridges and off into the prairie beyond. It could have been so. In the early 1880s, Fort Qu’appelle was the hands-on favourite to become the capital of the North-West Territories. It seems, though, that land speculators basically quashed the deal by buying up the land suitable for the townsite, a pattern that has been repeated time and time again during the settlement of the vast nation of Canada. Luckily for the Fort Qu’Appelle of today, Lieutenant Government Dewdney chose Regina instead. Today, the lovely rolling hills of the valley remain relatively unmolested providing stunning views of the pristine chain of four lakes, Pasqua, Echo, Mission and Katepwa. Long a rustic refuge from the city for cottagers and campers, the town is rapidly

becoming a premier resort destination, including upscale accommodations, scenic golf courses, and fine dining options. There is plenty to do in and around “the Fort,” as locals call it. For the history buff, follow the trails of the pioneering exlporers and First Nations folk before them. Have a coffee in the preserved Hudson’s Bay store, visit monuments to the signatories of Treaty Four and museums preserve the unique history of a unique place. Visit Lebret—a town that looks as if it could have been plucked straight out of rural Quebec. Climb the stations of the cross for one of the most spectacular views in the Valley and marvel and the old stone Catholic church and cemetery. Nature lovers will thrill over the tens of kilometres of trails, abundant wildlife, and native prairie flora. And, of course, if you just want to relax and cool off, there are lovely beaches throughout the area and no end of

watersports activities to enjoy. The Town of Fort Qu’Appelle itself is a full service town boasting a state-of-the-art Co-op grocery store, fast food and fine dining, unique shops and weekly farmer’s market. Everything one might need for a vacation, or even a place to call home. Only 45 minutes (and an easy 45 at that) from Regina, many people commute enjoying the best of country living with the best of city life. Just outside of town is the lovely Resort Village of B-Say-Tah and Echo Valley Provincial Park, all located on stunning Echo Lake. Stocked with Pickerel from the on-site hatchery, Echo Lake is an angler’s dream, an artist’s inspiration and a watersports enthusiast’s heaven. Recreation, fishing, arts, summer festivals, fireworks, skiing, pelicans… you name it, Fort Qu’Appelle has it, inlcuding the old fort façade lovingly re-created by the Fort Qu’Appelle Historical Society. PEACE HILLS TRUST BY RYAN HOLOTA PHOTOS SHAWN FULTON

f only banking was a little friendlier, a little easier, a little more personal.” The people at Peace Hills Trust kept thinking this, and they decided it was time to do something about it. Established in 1980, Peace Hills Trust has done everything possible to realize that goal. Peace Hills Trust is wholly owned by the Samson Cree Nation of Hobbema, Alberta, making it the largest privately owned trust company in Canada. It is a full-service financial institution with branches stretching across the country from Kelowna, B.C. to Fredericton, N.B. Peace Hills Trust offers all the same

services that traditional banks offer – investments, loans, mortgages – for both commercial and personal clients, but they do it differently. For example, if you call into the branch office you will never get a voice mail box or push a phone menu for information. They have real, live people who answer the telephones and your answers instead. Southern Saskatchewan’s main branch, located in Fort Qu’Appelle, offers a complete line of services. Peace Hills Trust’s newest location in Regina serves as a commercial location.

“Right now we’re focused on building relationships in Regina, and we’ve found that the best way to do that is to focus on commercial mortgages and business accounts,” explains regional manager Sharon Winch. “We certainly look forward to the day that we take on personal accounts like we do in Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatoon, Calgary and other locations across the country.” Peace Hills Trust has disciplined lending standards and is a certified mortgage lender, approved by the Small Business Loans Act, a member of CDIC, and monitored under the Federal Trust Companies Act of Canada. They are

client-focused and take the time to learn more about their customers and their ideas. “It’s hard to quantify, but we like to simplify things as much as possible and make sure that we have excellent communications with our clients,” says Winch. One simple example is the commercial lending terms. Many business owners are shocked to see that the corporate lending terms sheet is only three pages long and written in plain English. Compared to the 20-plus page documents full of legalese and footnotes that other financial institutions offer, this is a refreshing

change that everybody is happy to see. Another example is the direct connection that you have with your representatives. Peace Hills Trust is really a boutique-style financial institution where you can speak directly to the manager and they can speak directly to company executives. This helps things go a lot faster than at other financial institutions. There are simply fewer rungs of the ladder to navigate. Are you ready to experience a different kind of financial institution? Are you ready to be treated like a person instead of an account number? Call Nicole Dieter or Sharon Winch at Peace Hills Trust
