As the saying goes, “What’s old is new again.” With the popularity of vintage jewelry, everyone is searching for the next big find!

I

t’s important to note that not all old jewelry is vintage. Vintage refers to older items of very high craftsmanship, materials and design that is still relevant and useful in today’s world. Real vintage jewelry is timeless and, hence, valuable. A rare vintage piece may cost more than a similar new item.

Tips When Purchasing Vintage Fine Jewelry It’s important to note that not all old jewelry is vintage. Vintage refers to older items of very high craftsmanship, materials and design that is still relevant and useful in today’s world. Real vintage jewelry is timeless and, hence, valuable. A rare vintage piece may cost more than a similar new item. • Reason for Buying. Is it an investment? Do you desire something truly unique or are you searching for a particular style of jewelry? Are you thinking of having a vintage-themed wedding? Your reason for buying will greatly affect what you buy. If you are investing, research the market trends. For example, seven years ago, the desire for natural pearls was strong but now buyers are looking increasingly for coral pieces. Gemstones from long-closed mines, such as Golconda diamonds or Kashmir sapphires, are always in demand, as pre-owned jewelry is the only source for these precious stones.

basic understanding of the various cuts of gemstones, especially diamonds. Knowing what was popular or even possible in a period will help you to determine the authenticity of a piece. • Examine the Jewelry Carefully. Purchasing vintage fine jewelry is a big financial investment and every care should be taken to ensure the jewelry is authentic and in excellent condition. Examine the piece carefully with a jeweler’s loupe. Be sure to examine all sides. Repair work or construction flaws are often only visible from the back. Check any clasps to see if the metal looks newer than the rest of the piece. Do you see a jeweler’s mark? Vintage jewelry has almost certainly been worn before, possibly even frequently. You should see evidence of normal wear and tear. However, more extensive damage, such as chips or cracks to the stones or metal, will lessen its value and be difficult and costly to repair..

• Authentication. Buy only from a reputable, experienced dealer. Ask for the original proof of purchase or packaging or mention of the piece in old letters or photos. Discover how the seller acquired the jewelry. Have the jewelry authenticated by an expert, such as a Gemological Institute of America (GIA) certified gemologist. Remember, if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be sure to ask if the dealer offers any warranty for your purchase. Find out about their return policy, especially when purchasing an engagement ring or jewelry as a gift. Finally, get an insurance appraisal on any piece of vintage fine jewelry you buy. Happy hunting!

• Educate Yourself. The more you know about a product, the more likely the piece you purchase will be genuine. Educate yourself about the different jewelry design periods, specifically about the period you prefer. Learn about the well-known designers of the period — their design characteristics and their signature markings. Pieces made by well-known designers always hold their value better. Finally, gain a

The Incredible Healing Power of Infrared Saunas

most of us don’t exercise enough. But your body is designed to sweat; it’s a key way to cleanse.

hen it comes to revitalizing your health, reversing illness and just making you feel great, few things compare to a spa room session in the far infrared thermal massage bed at the Better Living Centre. THE DEEP HEALING POWER OF INFRARED ENERGY Infrared saunas penetrate up to 1.5 inches below your skin to detoxify and revitalize your cells. This produces a deep, detoxifying sweat that eliminates toxins at the cellular level. Most of us don’t sweat enough regularly. We live in air conditioned homes, cars and offices. We use antiperspirants and

The deep penetration of infrared heat releases toxins from the fat layers just beneath the skin. It also helps your body eliminate toxins from your internal organs. These toxins pass from the organs to the fat tissue under the skin. They are then eliminated in perspiration.

HEALTHIER, YOUNGER LOOKING SKIN A study published in The Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy showed significant improvements in skin appearance after just 12 weeks of sauna therapy. Participants saw a reduction in wrinkles and crow’s feet, as well as improved overall skin tone, including softness, smoothness, elasticity, clarity and firmness. This thermal massage bed is used specifically in Europe to reduce cellulite.

To see how this works, researchers analyzed the sweat from both traditional and infrared saunas. Sweat from traditional saunas was about 97 per cent water and three per cent toxins. Infrared saunas produced a sweat that was only 80 to 85 per cent water. The remaining 15 to 20 per cent was made up of heavy metals, sulfuric acid, sodium, ammonia, uric acid and fat-soluble toxins

REDUCE BLOOD PRESSURE NATURALLY Infrared saunas have been clinically shown to provide one of the best, most natural ways to lower blood pressure. In a 2005 clinical study by the University of Missouri Kansas City, infrared saunas were shown to lower blood pressure through a program of 30 minute infrared sauna sessions just three times per week.

NATURAL WEIGHT LOSS During a sauna weight loss session, your core temperature increases and the body works hard to cool itself. While using the far infrared thermal massage bed, there is a substantial increase in blood flow, heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate, causing the body to burn more calories.

DRUG-FREE PAIN RELIEF Infrared rays also help naturally reduce pain and inflammation. Infrared sauna heat works by penetrating joints, muscles and tissues. It increases circulation and boosts oxygen flow to the tissues. By reducing soreness on nerve endings, infrared heat coupled by the relaxing massage of jade rollers reduces muscle spasms and helps the body heal itself naturally.

Regular use of an infrared sauna may be an effective means of cardiovascular conditioning and burning of calories, akin to regular exercise. Burn up to 800 calories while enjoying an awesome massage — that’s like walking three miles!

Infrared saunas are proven relief for sports injuries, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, joint pain/stiffness and other chronic pain conditions.

open wide enough to even pull out the drawers properly because there’s a wall in the way. Double door (or french door) fridges require even more space, so keep that in mind. Other things like counter height and depth need to be considered (especially for dishwashers), as well as counter allowance for slide-in ranges.

A

ppliances can make or break the look of a room. Replacing ’70s appliances with shiny, stainless steel models can bring a kitchen into the 21st century more effectively than any other upgrade. Go Pro Just because you’re not a professional chef doesn’t mean your kitchen shouldn’t be professional grade. Lines like the new Frigidaire professional suite come in standard sizes (minimizing or even eliminating the amount of renovations needed to install them) and are priced so the average homeowner can afford them. The great part about the aesthetic of professional style appliances? They have a truly classic look that can seamlessly fit into any kitchen style. Last But Not Least Jumping the gun on appliance purchases can cost you in the long run if you haven’t properly planned the space. Make sure you extensively plan the layout of your kitchen. If an 18-inch dishwasher just won’t cut it, make sure you delegate space for a full 24-inch model. Don’t get stuck with appliances you don’t like just because you didn’t plan properly. Do sweat the smaLL stuff There are many small details that can slip your mind, or you don’t even think of in the first place. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen fridge doors that can’t

HOME & AUTO

It’s easy BeING GreeN Old appliances have a financial and environmental cost. A new, energy efficient fridge can save you up to $200 a year, meaning you recoup the purchase price in a couple years. ENERGY STAR compliant dishwashers not only use 50 to 75 per cent less energy than older models, but also much less water – as little as three gallons for a full cycle. If three gallons sounds like a lot, keep in mind you can use almost 10 times that by washing dishes by hand. Front load washers can cost as little as $20/year to operate, and since 90 per cent of the energy used to wash clothes is spent heating the water, switching to cold water can make a noticeable difference. DoN’t Let the eLectrIc sLIDe Appliances eat up a lot of the electrical bandwidth in your home. Laundry and kitchen appliances alone can take up a big portion of your panel, and when you add in things like air conditioning, it can get tight. This is especially true if you have an income suite in your home, which means two kitchens and often two washers and dryers. We recently shot an episode of Income Property where the homeowners ended up having to upgrade their electrical panel to accommodate the addition of a dishwasher and upstairs laundry. This was above and beyond what they had planned to spend because it never occurred to them that their current electrical panel wasn’t sufficient. If you have a newer home, chances are this won’t be an issue. However if you’re buying an older home (like many in the core areas of most major cities), it’s something you may need to consider. Check out the new season of Income Property Thursdays at 9 p.m. & 9:30p.m. ET/PT on HGTV CANADA. /EverythingScottMcgillivray @smcgillivray @scottmcg @scott_mcgillivray www.scottmcgillivray.com

ike and Krissa McIntyre are the owners of Thorsness Appliance and Bed Store. Mike follows in the footsteps of his dad, Tom, who has retired after 42 years in the business. The McIntyres have owned and operated Thorsness Appliance and Bed Store plus Thorsness Hardware in Saltcoats since 1996. They kept the Thorsness name because of the reputation it held since the first Thorsness store opened in Bredenbury in 1945. The Thorsness legacy spread to Saltcoats in the 1950s, Churchbridge in the 1960s and Langenburg in the 1970s. Mike and Krissa embrace their roles as coowners wholeheartedly. Mike has been with Thorsness Appliance for 22 years, including 19 years as manager of the Yorkton store. Krissa, who joined Mike in the role in January 1, 2014, spent several years in the

dental field working at Dr. Cottenie’s office in Yorkton. She is looking forward to serving the community in a different role. Thorsness Appliance spent its early Yorkton years in the Linden Square Mall. It was then attached to the Yorkton Co-op food store for five years and has been at its present location at 14 Betts Avenue since 2002. The McIntyres currently rent two warehouses and have since purchased the properties at 16 Betts and 18 Betts in order to grow their display and warehouse size. This extra space has enabled them to stock most of what they sell, which means that if you pick something out, you can usually take it home with you or have it delivered within a few days instead of waiting for the company to order it. This is a huge advantage if you’ve had a sudden appliance breakdown.

HOME & AUTO

Thorsness will also let you pick out your appliances and store them for you temporarily. Additionally, since they are a servicing dealer, your warranty will start on the date of delivery, not when you purchase your appliance. Thorsness Appliance and Bed Store is a “Whirlpool Loyalty Store,” which means they specialize in appliances made by the Whirlpool Corporation. They also offer other brands like Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air and Amana. By being a loyalty dealer, they get better pricing and rebates they then pass on to the customer. Aside from carrying exceptional appliance brands, Thorsness also carries the best in mattresses. The most trusted and reliable name in the business, Serta has been providing people a good night’s sleep for many years. Another way Thorsness stays competitive is by belonging to the

DRSG buying group, which gives them better buying and marketing power. Thorsness Appliance and Bed Store always tries their best to provide customers with everything available in the big city while maintaining the service and atmosphere of a small town store. They pride themselves in trying to find the right appliance or mattress to fit the customers’ wants and needs and still keep their budget in mind. They also keep working for you after the purchase. “If there is a problem, we will do our best to solve that problem,” says Mike. And since Thorsness has their own technician, those problems are often solved faster. Another reason the Mclntyres believe they have an advantage is the knowledge and friendliness of their staff. Mike and Krissa are joined by two talented sales people — Kris Polachek, who has been with the company for 11 years, and Dave Mclntyre for 39 years. Sid Danyluk and Rick Zaharia are Thorsness’ trusted delivery people, who work alongside long-time service manager Don Ward. The Thorsness name is reputable not only because they have been in business for more than 70 years, but also because they continue to take steps to make their service better for the customer — and people recognize that. Word-of-mouth is still the best form of advertising, which Thorsness gets from their repeat customers to whom they credit their longevity. “We have kids and grandkids of longtime, loyal customers that often tell us they were sent in because they were told to expect the same treatment they have been known to receive for decades,” says Mike. For more information, visit the Yorkton store Monday through Saturday or give them a call. You can also browse their products on their website at www. thorsnessappliance.com. Five Things to Consider When Buying Your First Home

1. The growth possibilities. Shop for a place that meets your current space needs, but also consider one that can adjust to a changing household. A fiveyear plan may not pan out as you expect, so think about possible life changes that could impact your need for bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage. 269 Hamilton Road, Yorkton 306.783.6666 www.remax-bluechip-yorkton-sk.ca

A

s a renter, you have the luxury of choosing a place that meets your needs at the moment. Buying a home is a much bigger commitment, both in terms of finances and the length of time you’ll likely live there. When seeking out your first place, whether a house or condominium or anything in between, it’s important to do your homework. Here are five things to consider as you begin the process of purchasing your first place.

2. Find out what’s under the hood. Your first place may not come with many frills or luxury features, but all the basics should be in good condition. Thoroughly inspect prospective properties. It is a must to hire a professional inspector before any purchase is made. Your real estate agent can guide you through this key step. 3. Know that no home will be perfect. Your first home may likely not be the perfect place. But make it the right one. Finding the right home is often a matter of prioritizing. Make a list of “must haves,” along with “nice to haves” and “not necessary to haves.” A threecar garage is nice, but would you rather have a larger kitchen or live in a good neighbourhood? Only you can measure the importance of the amenities you are looking for.

HOME & AUTO

4. Consider ALL the costs of ownership. When you buy a home, you take on recurring costs you don’t have to worry about as a renter. Look for a home that meets your budget in terms of full living costs — mortgage, utilities, trash pick-up, sewage fees, homeowner’s association dues and other fees. Your lender doesn’t take into account these costs when approving your home loan. A good real estate agent can help you calculate estimated monthly costs to determine the most appropriate price range for you. 5. The lifespan of things. In addition to identifying cosmetic and structural flaws before you buy, know what to expect from the home’s components. How long until you need to replace the roof, appliances, furnace or carpet? Everything may be in working order now, but all homes need these types of repairs at some point. Researching the expected remaining life on large-ticket items can help you plan for the future. When you’re ready to start the process of buying a home, a local RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agent will be ready to help.

And together, we changed a hundred-year-old train station into the coolest place around. With the help of Paul Abrahamson, owner of Millroad Construction, we transformed the place. Cory Deslauriers, owner of Auto Trim Design, did some graphic art that is one-of-a-kind. Stop in for a coffee and check it out.

I also help people with landscaping. My job is not just to tell you what to put where, but get down and dirty and start digging. Whether planting flowers, setting up eating areas or whatever needs to be done, together we can do it. Your yard should be an extension of you and your home. With wallpaper back in style, it’s also a big part of what I do. With the new wallpapers that are available, the sky is the limit. Not to worry — I will put it up for you. I have more than 20 years’ experience in the construction field, as well as 10 years

in furniture sales. So, I am not afraid to have a paintbrush, hammer or shovel in my hand. There is no limit to what can be done when it comes to design. With the help of my family and husband, Brent, I offer a full array of services for your home and design needs. Give me a call and together we can change one room or your full living space inside and out.

The GSSD will pay for services only to be paid back as the fundraising committee raises funds. “This project wouldn’t be at this stage without the financial backing and support of the Good Spirit School Division,” says Darcy Zaharia, a member of the YCC fundraising committee. And, it’s not just

BUSINESS & COMMUNITY

a matter of getting the clubhouse up and running. The support of the GSSD will serve as the lifeblood of the YCC, having taken on the responsibility of yearly operating expenses, estimated at $20,000 per year. The facility, which has those in the community singing praises, will provide a reliable space for home teams and allow visiting teams to feel welcome and taken care of. Marcel Porte, club manager for the Yorkton Legion Track Club (YLTC)

says the new facility will provide a reliable space for year-round practice. He notes that currently, YLTC has barriers in the summer months when the school is closed, preventing access to washrooms and storage.

“Success within the YMF will be determined not by the wins and losses, but by the improvement in self-worth and self-image of our athletes.” —From the YMF mission statement.

A Bigger Space & Bright Future for Yorkton Plumbing & Heating By Kim Mannix Vermette Photos Simple Shots by Jackie

It’s a sunny prairie day, and Justin Yawney, owner of Yorkton Plumbing & Heating is spending most of it inside his new office, busily working and helping his staff settle into their new space — a 25,000 sq. ft. shop and showroom. 34

awney, a plumber by trade, founded Yorkton Plumbing & Heating eight years ago, as a one-man operation out of an 800 sq. ft. rented bay. He now employs 58 men and women and operates out of a facility with 16 offices, a boardroom, stunning mezzanine and state-of-the art equipment. In addition to tackling plumbing and heating jobs of any kind, the company carries a wide selection of top-brand fixtures and products, and has recently started a new division renting water softeners and water heaters.

at the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce Celebrate Success Awards. Most recently, in 2014, Yorkton Plumbing & Heating took home two prestigious Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce ABEX Awards for Customer Service and Business of the Year.

The company’s numbers, accolades and vision have grown every year. In 2011, Yawney won Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce ABEX Awards, followed by a win for the same category in 2012

Those great people include Yawney’s colleagues and staff, as well as his customers. Yorkton Plumbing & Heating’s commitment to exceptional customer service has been evident from the start and has carried on throughout its growth

“I guess what’s made it successful is that I’ve never been scared to take on big projects or try new things,” explains Yawney. “It takes hard work for sure, but I’ve had the fortune of a good economy and the chance to work with many great people.”

and expansion. Excellence in customer satisfaction is a shared value amongst every member of the Yorkton Plumbing & Heating team. “Customer service has always been important to us because it comes down to thinking about how you like to be treated and valued as a customer yourself, “ explains Yawney. “When you’re respected and treated well, that’s when you come back to a business.” No job is too big or too small for Yawney’s company, whether it’s a leaky home water heater or supplying the plumbing and heating systems for a large commercial build. Yorkton Plumbing & Heating is the only business of its kind to provide 24-hour availability to Yorkton and the surrounding rural area. Yorkton Plumbing

The company also has an exceptionally high rate of referrals and returning customers in both the urban and rural segments. Safety is also of utmost importance at Yorkton Plumbing & Heating and is overseen by the company’s construction safety officer. There’s a shared attitude of company pride amongst the Yorkton Plumbing & Heating staff, who are quick to say that Yawney’s friendly and professional attitude towards his employees makes it an enjoyable place to be every day. He is committed to training new workers properly with supportive on-the-job learning and paid schooling to ensure they are always ready and able to serve customers. “It’s an amazing place to work and be a part of,” says Evan Johnson, Yorkton Plumbing & Heating’s sales manager, who joined the team two years ago.

their individual role and is extremely proud to lead an incredibly talented and dedicated team. Yawney extends his positive attitude within the community by actively supporting a variety of local sports and charity initiatives. Some of these include Yorkton minor football, soccer, baseball and hockey leagues as well as Habitat for Humanity, Camp Easter Seal, and the Health Foundation of East Central Saskatchewan. Having been active in numerous community sports as a child, Yawney recognizes the paramount importance of giving back to the community.

For Yawney, growing new talent within the company is one of the most satisfying parts of his business. “The employees sometimes start out knowing almost nothing about the trade and within a short time we’ve grown them into pretty awesome journeyman,” comments Yawney. “That’s a good feeling.” His very first employee, Regan Bohn, started as a first year apprentice plumber and has recently become one of the company’s project estimators. The service manager, Jonathan Malcolm, began as a second year refrigeration technician and received his journeyman certification shortly after joining the Yorkton Plumbing & Heating team. Levi Krasowski joined

Yorkton Plumbing & Heating as a fourth year sheet metal apprentice and has since demonstrated leadership as an onsite sheet metal foreman. In addition to these few homegrown success stories, some staff members joined the team with their training completed. Kurtis Krotenko began his work with Yorkton Plumbing & Heating as a journeyman plumber with an abundance of residential experience. Krotenko has recently embarked on a new role as the on-site residential project manager. Regardless of their position, or how far an employee has advanced in their training, Yawney values each team member for

Growing bigger and better through hard work and vision has always been part of the company’s goal. With their new and improved facility, Yorkton Plumbing & Heating has room to grow even more. Yawney says he hopes to continue with big project development and eventually open shops in other large Saskatchewan cities. The numerous awards his company has received so far are flattering and unexpected and indicate Yawney is heading in the right direction. “It’s obvious I love my job and we’ve done pretty well, but all of it just lights a fire underneath me to start thinking about what else we can do.” Yorkton Plumbing & Heating 306.782.4588 yorktonplumbingandheating.com

Yorkton Co-op Celebrates 75 years

orkton Co-op continued to thrive through the 70s as memberships continued to grow. Members who reached the age of 70 or moved outside the trading area were paid out. This totalled $130,000 and all members who had more than $300 in equity were paid 10 per cent of their total equity. These payments brought the total cash returned to the members since incorporation to $600,000. The petroleum and lumber departments were causing cash flow problems with high inventories and accounts receivable. Tough times were on the horizon and any upgrading of facilities was restricted to necessary repairs.

38

FineLifestyles

1977 saw the metric system come into Canada and the Co-op spent much time and energy educating its members about this program. The Kamsack branch was showing satisfactory progress, however, the Wroxton branch was not doing so well. Sales in 1977 had grown to $8.9 million with a net savings of $304,000.

new fuel delivery units were purchased for Dubuc and Theodore. Interest rates were continuing to climb and were now at 15.25 per cent. In the midst of a market survey to expand the lumber department, a serious fire gutted the old facility and a new Home Centre was opened in November 1980.

Through the late 70s, operations continued to do well despite poor results from some locations. To improve operations, the board sold the fertilizer equipment to avoid severe rental increases and the association ceased to offer bulk fertilizer. The Kamsack service station was renovated and two

The early 80s saw the leasing out of the West Broadway CafĂŠ and an upgrade to the underground fuel tanks at that location. The board of directors initiated a study on the Yorkton Shopping Centre and moving to a new property. There were concerns at Wroxton and plans were discussed to close the branch and

A glimpse at Yorkton Co-op’s Next 10 years  1975 consolidate fuel deliveries out of Kamsack and Yorkton. Retailers in general were in the midst of a serious situation; inflation was at its highest point and interest rates were higher than ever. Reports indicated the recession would last into 1983, and member equity in the Co-op dropped to a low of 25 per cent. The Co-op lost $433,000 in 1982. The need for change was evident. A stringent review of operations took place and a retrenchment plan was adopted by the board of directors. The plan included the closure of the Wroxton branch and Kamsack lumber store. A rollback in salaries, layoffs and reductions in hours, along with the cancellation of institutional advertising was made. These decisions were not popular ones, but were essential for the Co-op to survive the recession. Throughout the mid-80s, the tough decisions made earlier to survive started to show positive results. The home centre in Yorkton was closed in 1983, and any purchases of fixed assets were restricted to absolute necessities. Any equipment not being used was sold. This included the property and equipment at Wroxton, Bangor and Kamsack and Yorkton lumber locations. Members’ equity had improved to 30 per cent by 1984 and accounts receivable was reduced by 48 per cent. Loans were reduced by $1.2 million dollars the previous two years and although the future looked brighter, looming on the horizon were high interest rates, a weak farm economy and low consumer confidence. Based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, when one need is fulfilled, a person is motivated and seeks to fulfill the next one. Each time you complete a level, you will experience a relief of stress in your life. Four in 10 people in relationships with shared finances argue regularly. As you address each step, you can proceed up the five levels and ensure you are not among the 87 per cent of Canadians who wish they had made better financial decisions earlier in life, or one of the 51 per cent of women or 40 per cent of men who lose sleep over financial worries. Life Matters Coaching guides you through the steps. Here are some tips on how to ensure you’re moving up Maslow’s hierarchy from “survival money” to “dream money.” Level 1 — SURVIVAL MONEY: Having enough to make ends meet. Look after your health; eating fresh food and sleeping are basic needs. You can ensure peace of mind can be achieved with Blue Cross and Group Medical Services Health Insurance.

A

national survey conducted on behalf of Financial Planning Standards Council (FPSC) has found that money is the leading source of stress among Canadians, significantly more than work, personal health and relationships.

Level 2 — SAFETY “WHAT IF?” MONEY: Life has many unexpected turns. Prepare for the unpredictable with tax-free savings accounts, home and auto insurance, critical illness, and disability and life insurance. Level 3 — FREEDOM MONEY: Extra to spend on things that bring enjoyment and fulfillment to your life. Enjoy your life and have the freedom to live the life you want from day to day. insurance, estate and legacy planning, and personal growth needs met through accessing and working with your money mentor or coach. Level 4 — GIVING BACK MONEY: Learning how to work with money and taxes through charitable giving and community funds. Our hearts are touched throughout our lives by different organizations. Ensure their legacy and longevity by allocating your dollars to support their cause. Work with a trusted and well-informed advisor who can educate you on how to find a simple and effective way to give. Level 5 – DREAM MONEY: Having money for the things you’ve always dreamed of doing and having. Achieving individual potential requires forethought. Working with your money mentor you will learn the importance of knowing your life path values and what you find important in your life journey. You will need money to do what you want to do. The festivities kick off with the opening of the spray park in Kinsmen Park on June 20, to coincide with Parks and Recreation Month. The outdoor pool opens to swimmers in June, offering swimming lessons, leisure swimming and even midnight swims right until the end of August. July heats up with the Canada Day Picnic in the Park. Held in the city’s Centennial Park, the day is loaded with activities for people of all ages. Young and old alike can enjoy the all-day entertainment, batting cages and free swimming in Melville’s outdoor pool. “This family-friendly occasion is a must-do,” says tourism manager Jeniffer Mann. “It’s the opener for a fantastic season of city events.” July heats up even more with the city’s annual Railway Days held July 17-18. Things kick off Friday night with a movie in the park with fireworks to follow. Begin the weekend on Saturday with a pancake breakfast and parade. In the afternoon there’s a vendor market with plenty of things to try and buy, plus food concessions, as well as games and a mini waterpark for the kids. PROUD SUPPORTER OF THE DELTA JUNIOR A ISLANDERS

The Family-Friendly Melville Golf & Country Club

Play unlimited golf with a season pass or get amazing value with one of our specials!

This 18-hole par 70 Parkland style course is operated by the Melville Regional Park. The course has added four new greens in the last few years, adding to its playability and enjoyment. Crescent Creek meanders across or alongside 11 of the holes, adding interest and challenge to your game. The course is not overly long, which helps make it friendlier for juniors and families. However, with many small greens as targets, the experienced golfer will still be tested. For those wishing to “tee it forward,” there are two sets of tee boxes. The forward tees play to 5182 yards and the back tees to 6063 yards. While playing, check out the tee markers used on the course — the small pieces of railway track pay homage to Melville’s railroad history. Call the clubhouse at 306.728.3931 to book your tee time.
