An abundance of services in the Parkland area can help make your wedding a picture-perfect success, as well as an event to remember. Animal lovers are in for a special treat this issue, too. Local horse trainer Sid Matsalla chatted with us about a life of raising and training horses, and how it brings his family together. Meanwhile, in Regina, the exotic pet serval, Jagger, continues to make rounds with his owners in order to inform and enlighten people about exotic pets. This past summer, a Saskatchewan-made hotrod was auctioned off for a handsome sum in support of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. Flip to the Wheels section to see this stunning masterpiece. It’s an inspiring story about people coming together for a wonderful cause.

eople have long had a fascination with the beauty and wonder of wild animals. Some people take their love of the wild into the living room, by adopting exotic animals to keep as pets. While a person’s reasons for keeping an exotic animal can be well meaning, there’s much to be considered before committing to owning one.

Kim and Pam Shaheen, a couple in Regina who own a serval, an African cat, could not agree more. About eight years ago, Pam Shaheen was sitting at her computer surfing the Internet when she came across an article on the serval and was immediately intrigued. After years of extensive research, Pam and her husband, Kim, made the decision to

adopt a serval as a pet. This decisio not made lightly as there were s factors to take into account.

An exotic animal is an expensive ad to the family. You need to factor only the purchase price but also th of upkeep; many exotic animals re a special diet. You also have to tak

Off the Bridal Path By Rebecca Henderson

You may remember Princess Diana’s gown. If not, a quick Google search will jog your memory. Her dress was big, with puffy sleeves, layers of lace that covered her forearms, and a train that billowed behind her as she entered the St. Paul’s Cathedral.

“I

t was the biggest dress of life,” says Angel Spendlove, co-owner and designer for & For Love, a contemporary bridal fashion house founded in Toronto. “But that was the ‘80s. I think brides now want to go back to being simple and elegant and not so crazy. It can be small and intimate and still be special,” says Spendlove. “Think Bianca Jagger’s pantsuit and how different and cool it was in the ‘70s.”

Spendlove describes an evolution in bridal-wear, starting with the simple elegance of the 1920s and moving to the bohemian-chic era of the 1970s. “I think it’s slowly getting more relaxed,” she says of the modern bride. “The last 20 years got really strange.” This year, for many wedding dresses on the runway, the construction of the dress is beginning to reflect an era away from tradition. Even ball gowns, prom dresses and pantsuits are viable options for the big day. In fact, looking at the boards on Pinterest, it’s not uncommon to find pins of everyday dresses for inspiration such as when Keira Knightley re-wore a Chanel cocktail dress for her wedding. “It’s off the rack, and it’s fun,” says Spendlove. “Now more than ever, brides are more in tune with what they want. It really does go back to the bride’s personality and the wedding environment — it influences the dress choice so much. We’re all not the same, so why should our wedding dresses be?” & For Love, Oscar De La Renta and Claire Pettibone wedding dresses are sold in Kleinfelds, Toronto’s premium wedding dress shop located in the Hudson’s Bay Company.

La Renta debuted its 2013 Look 33 — a white sequined bird’s nest knit sweetheart column gown with a blue tulle tiered overskirt that provided its something blue right to the dress. Many wedding designers are opting for pops of colour on the runway. It also isn’t surprising to see a wedding dress that is one full colour either. “I have a friend who wore a tangerine dress for her wedding inside a pub,” recalls Spendlove. “She looked absolutely beautiful. However, I still prefer white — although I do like pale blushes and grays for a hint of colour.” Many of & For Love’s creations are white with a relaxed fit such as its Amy Sheath gown, which features a v-neckline, opened sides, a fully beaded waistband and a fishtail skirt. The dress is embellished with faux pearls, crystals and gunmetal lace. Spendlove says, for many women, the environment of the wedding has a huge influence on the dress as well. A forest wedding may evoke A Midsummer’s Night Dream gown such as Los Angeles fashion designer Claire Pettibone’s Raven wedding dress — made with black tulle and embroidered with pink and red roses.

he perfect day, the perfect dress, and the perfect partner, needs an amazing photographer. A wedding photographer captures the big moments such as the walk down the aisle and the first dance. They may even capture the tears during the father/daughter dance and the giggles during the throwing of the bouquet. But a professional photographer captures much more than that. Jackie from Simple Shots by Jackie talks about capturing emotion. “When people truly love each other you can see it when they look at each other and the expressions on their face when the person they love is near. Those are the moments that become memories when I can capture that one look and preserve it forever.” The little moments of the wedding day tell the biggest stories. The flower girl playing with the puppy, the bridesmaids laughing, the mom catching a last special moment alone with her little girl, the father’s firm handshake and warning look in his eye as he gives his daughter away. Small moments are preserved forever when they are captured through the lens of your professional wedding photographer. Years down the road, a glance at the photos should make you tell stories and remember details from your day. Jackie is a seasoned and tailored wedding photographer. Brittany Stringfellow and her husband Kevin just enjoyed having Jackie as their wedding photographer. Says Brittany about Jackie’s service and talent, “She captured moments we didn’t even know happened in the chaos of the day. Later when we looked at the image we were amazed at the shots that were there.” She also commented on Jackie’s passion for

what she does and her flexibility. “Jackie was much more than a photographer. She was available for advice on organizing my day and she was flexible and fun but kept us on track on our wedding day so we didn’t miss anything or feel too rushed.” The details of today are the memories of tomorrow. t’s your day, and we work to make it special for you,” says Jan Morrison, events manager at the Gallagher Centre.

The Gallagher Centre is the premiere location for all kinds of events in Yorkton. Aside from facilities that include a hockey rink, curling rink and a wave pool, the National Bank Convention Place and the Nexera Flexihall have proven to be flexible spaces that can accommodate many types of events. Whether you are planning an intimate wedding or large event, the Gallagher Center venue and events team create an unforgettable space to celebrate your vows with friends and family.

Their team of event planners, including Morrison and the events coordinator Cindy Alexander, work with caterer Ken Maduck of Parkland Catering to make your event perfect. “We want people to know that the events team is there for you,” says Morrison. “We don’t just book your room for you; we’re here for the whole process and we enjoy it!” The National Bank Convention Place is a large space that can be divided into three separate rooms for the wedding. Recently, it has become popular to have the ceremony in the same venue as the reception, which saves time and money for the couple. The venue allows the events team to set up the next room to be

ready within 30 minutes of the ceremony for a seamless transition from the wedding ceremony into the evening festivities. The venue offers complimentary arches, a house sound system and an in-season balcony that is available for use during the event. Both round and long tables are available, as well as basic linens in white, ivory and black to accommodate the wishes of the bride. The venue also has different sizes and styles of stages for the wedding party. The Gallagher Centre events staff is available before the ceremony to accept any packages or flower arrangements on behalf of the wedding party, so the

bride and groom can relax before the ceremony. The flexibility of the venue allows for a next day gift opening without the room needing to be cleared out at the end of the wedding reception. Parkland Catering offers many menus to choose from, and they are able to accommodate requests for gluten-free, vegan or ethnic foods. Maduck enjoys working with the couples to identify exactly which food and beverage options will best compliment their event. The National Bank Convention Place is the perfect location for weddings up to 300 guests, but for larger events, the Nexera Flexihall can be transformed for a wedding of up to 1,200 guests. Couples have the option of using the curling rink in the off-season for weddings, and with the right decorations and help from the Gallagher Centre events staff, you would never know you were in a curling rink! “We’re more than just a venue,” says Morrison. “Our staff is here to ensure you have your dream wedding.” Gallagher Centre 455 West Broadway, Yorkton 306.786.1740 www.gallaghercentre.com

ibe Interior Decorating just celebrated its fourth anniversary. “The business has really grown over the last few years,” says Arielle Sheppard, owner. “What started out as a decor store with an eclectic mix of new and vintage pieces has evolved into a one-stop shop for all your home fashion, floral and gift giving needs.” With that in mind, the shop is currently preparing to make way for a number of new Canadian products, such as Country Chic chalk paint, Wild

Prairie soap, Mistura timepieces and Wakami jewellery. Event rentals and decorating services were another addition made to the business this year. Sheppard had never considered using her knack for creating beautiful spaces for event decorating until a client approached her in regards to her son’s wedding. “Once I began the planning and sourcing of linens, florals and décor for the project it dawned on me that maybe this shouldn’t be a one time gig and maybe I should get into floristry!”

Word spread fast after the first wedding. Between Christmas parties, a hospital gala and 14 weddings this past summer, it’s been an action packed 12 months for Sheppard and her business. “Several brides this past summer simply told me, ‘These are my colors; I know you will make it beautiful,’ and then I never heard from them again until a week before the wedding,” says Sheppard with a chuckle. “It’s a real feather in my hat to know my clients’ trust and appreciate the style and quality of work I do.”

"Arielle’s attention to detail and creative spirit made her the perfect candidate to decorate our wedding. She was able to encompass my vision in its entirety, finding the perfect balance of pink and grey hues and the touch of bling I was looking for. The bridal flowers and tablescapes were stunning. She went above my expectations to ensure the theme was executed from the church to the reception. I am so happy to have had the opportunity to utilize Arielle’s services and would highly recommend her as she will not disappoint." – Amanda Kweens Whether it’s decorating a bedroom, designing a bridal bouquet or refinishing a piece of furniture, Sheppard’s creativity and unique sense of style always shines through. Out-of-the-box thinking and choosing unique items are one of Sheppard’s many strong points. “I hope that my customers feel inspired to do something a little different when they leave the shop — paint a wall a bold colour, buy a strange piece of art, or re-purpose something they may have considered trash,” she says. “I have a passion for making things beautiful,” adds Sheppard. “I started out inspiring people to be creative within their homes and now I get to help them create memorable events to be enjoyed for a single moment.” Sheppard is already taking bookings for the 2015 wedding season. TAKE A SPA DAY T By Trina Annand

hroughout human history some form of spas have existed, with their earliest roots dating back to the Roman Era when visiting a thermal or mineral spring was considered vital to a person’s health. In the 20th century this mentality shifted: going to a spa was viewed as a frivolous luxury. Now, spas are shifting their approach to focus on wellness, and medical science is learning more about the value of relaxation to one’s overall health. Massage is traditionally considered a spa treatment. It is proven to reduce stress and hormone levels, boost immunity and mood, relieve pain and increase circulation. With

26

FineLifestyles

more than 30 different types of massage, there is something for every person and condition — from deep tissue and hot stone, to raindrop and shiatsu.

Facials combine the relaxation of massage with the added benefits of a detoxification, mirco-abrasion, moisturizing or vitaminadding treatment. Facial massage can also reduce the occurrence of tension headaches and increase circulation to the face, allowing for a more youthful appearance. To go along with a fresh face, a manicure and pedicure can provide a highly polished appearance. Pedicures also improve overall foot heath by softening skin — reducing the possibility of cracks and rough spots —

and can even catch foot conditions before they get too serious. At a medical spa all the standard spa treatments are offered, combined with youth enhancing medical treatments like Botox, oxygen treatments, dermal fillers, laser treatments, nutritional consultants, and in some cases even tattoo, mole and skin tag removal. Everyone needs to get away now and then, and with vacations few and far between, taking a spa day can be the perfect break from the chaos of everyday life. Whether you’re a busy mom or a corporate juggernaut, it pays to take a spa day.

aser skin tightening utilizes laser technology to firm areas of loose or sagging skin on areas of the face, neck, jaw-line and select areas of the body such as “crepe paperlike skin on the abdomen. Although results are often seen after a single treatment, optimal results are seen after a series of treatments.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A LASER SKIN TIGHTENING PROCEDURE? The procedure is relatively comfortable and is often described as a warm sensation on the skin. The skin remains intact and may be transiently pink after the treatment. If desired, make-up may be applied immediately after treatment and normal activities may be resumed. In essence, there is no expected downtime. Patients often notice immediate changes in the appearance of their skin after a single treatment. However, it is important to bear in mind that best results are usually seen after only a series of treatments. WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR LASER SKIN TIGHTENING? Laser skin tightening is designed to treat mild to moderately loose skin on the lower face, around the eyes, the neck and certain body areas. It does not address skin pigmentation or blood vessels. All skin

types are eligible to have treatment and no complicated pre or post-treatment precautions are required. This treatment may be used as a stand-alone procedure, or more often in combination with other cosmetic procedures to further enhance the results. This procedure is one of the most comfortable, convenient and cost effective procedures available to firm mildly loose skin of the face and neck. BODY SLIMMING Body slimming at my salon is a non-invasive treatment using ultrasonic technology (UT). By heating fat cells to a therapeutic temperature, fluid and toxins stored within the cells are released. Released toxins and fluids are flushed out through the lymphatic system resulting in fat cell reduction in the treatment area. Body slimming UT is an effective treatment on both the body and face.

T

ree of Life Wellness owner Lara Stechyshyn was searching for a natural and long-lasting solution to treating her eczema — an alternative to the medicated cream she had been using — when she discovered acupuncture. After studying acupuncture therapy at Reeves College in Edmonton, she learned she could also help others dealing with similar skin conditions, aches and pains. “At Tree of Life Wellness, I focus on Chinese acupuncture,” says Stechyshyn. “There are 12 main organs (Zang-Fu) in Chinese theory and they are the centerpiece of Traditional Chinese Medicine’s (TCM) theory of how the human body works.” Stechyshyn uses a 3,000-year-old Zang-Fu treatment affecting the Wei Qi — a gentle and natural acupuncture energy — to help patients with their ailments, whether it’s physical, emotional or mental. “It’s about targeting points in the body and stimulating the muscle again,” she explains. “However, we never go further than the cou li of space between the skin and the muscle.” Using a needle that is thinner than a sewing needle, Wei Qi releases energy that has been wound tight through stress or exertion. It’s a superficial level of energy, but at the same time targets the organ itself. “I treat a variety of patients with physical aches and pains as well as patients who have anxiety, depression, insomnia and schizophrenia,” says Stechyshyn. “Patients with mental illness, often see results right away. They light up and it’s amazing how you can see it in their eyes and from the sound of their voice.” Stechyshyn also treats patients with lower back and neck issues, arthritis and people suffering from sciatica (the side effects from a disc replacement).

Beyond acupuncture, Stechyshyn uses four other modalities. One is Gua Sha, which involves rubbing a credit card-size piece of plastic along the muscle with oils and sometimes, cinnamon scented tiger balm. “It’s a more intense, deep-tissue massage to ease the muscle off of the bone,” she says. Another is fire cupping, where Stechyshyn uses forceps and a glass cup burning inside and places it on the skin. The suction of the scepters promotes blood flow through the body. A third is Moxibustion, a TCM therapy using moxa made from dried mugwort, which is like green wool to warm up the body. “You can be more intense by directly burning it onto the skin as well,” she says. Finally, Stechyshyn provides electro acupuncture for patients by using a small batteryoperated machine and booster cables that make the needles jump and cause a ticking

sensation in the skin. “It’s great for people who have tendinitis because it’s a deeper sensation for the body.” Stechyshyn also offers aromatherapy and crystal therapy. “Natural therapy is a preventive and long-lasting form of medicine,” she says. “And while I only opened this August, my patients are all return clients. They appreciate the results because they can continue living with good immunity and good health.”

Respect & suppoRt

the life and paintings of

Kevin Pee-Ace By Tonya Lambert

R

espect and support are the building blocks in the life of artist Kevin PeeAce, whose paintings can be found gracing the halls of both the University of Saskatchewan and the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon as well as in many other public and private collections. These are also the principles which guide his work as a professional artist. When he speaks, these two subjects arise again and again: respect for other people — family, friends and the community — and support, both that which he gives to others as well as the support he receives in return. Born in Kelvington, Pee-Ace is a member of the Yellow Quill First Nation. Growing up,

his family played a key role in both his personal and artistic development. “From my grandmother, Delvina Keewistep, I learned a lot about my culture and gained a great respect for it,” explains Pee-Ace. “When I went to visit her years ago, she showed me a horse saddle entirely covered in beadwork that had taken her all winter to make.” Exploring some of the themes he saw in her handiwork led Pee-Ace to the floral motif style that dominates his current paintings. “The bold use of colours and black borders serve as a window, offering an insight into the culture,” says Pee-Ace. “The flowers themselves represent First Nations culture. I paint people sitting or standing on the flowers to show how every individual is supported by their culture.”

Pee-Ace was raised by his late mother, Ann Whitehead. His great love and respect for his mother and all mothers is evident in his work, which frequently depicts a mother holding a child. “The children in my paintings are reaching for stars. The stars represent their goals. The mothers and flowers show that the support of family and culture are necessary in order for a child to achieve dreams,” explains Pee-Ace.

“My family is very important to me. They give me direction and purpose,” notes the artist. “My wife has always been there for me, and has complete faith in me and my work. She is a constant source of strength and energy.”

Pee-Ace’s uncle, Jerry Whitehead, is also an artist, and his use of strong, brilliant colours has made a big impact on his nephew’s work. “I use bright, vibrant colours in my paintings to exude a positive, hopeful tone,” says Pee-Ace. “Sometimes people mistake my uncle’s work for mine because of our similar use of colour.”

As a professional artist, Pee-Ace makes his living by selling his paintings and by teaching. He goes to schools across the province instructing, creating murals, and working on class projects. “Art was an integral part of how I learned when I was in school. It enabled me to freely express myself,” he explains. “We must learn to cultivate the creative part in all of us, to tap into our feelings and emotions, and to release it through our artistic endeavours. Teaching the children is a great learning experience and I am honored and humbled to work with them.”

As an adult, Pee-Ace has drawn incredible support from his wife, Vicki Head, and their three children, Dawn, Eve and Raymond, and new grandson, Daniel.

Anyone interested in commissioning a painting or hiring Pee-Ace to teach art at their school should contact him at klpeeace@msn.com.

hat started as a love for music has turned into a full time business for Garth and Tracy Malayney. Garth’s interest in music started at the impressionable age of 17, when he began working for a mobile disc jockey company in his hometown. Once he had a few “gigs” under his belt, Garth knew DJ’ing was something he wanted to pursue. It takes a special kind of person to entertain a crowd for five hours or more, and Garth has what it takes to keep them up and dancing.

40

FineLifestyles

Parkland Saskatchewan

In 1996, Garth ventured out on his own and started his company named Saddles & Steel Music Productions. People often ask how the name came to be. “‘Saddles’ represents the countryside of music, and ‘steel’ comes from the rock ‘n’ roll side,” explains Garth. True to their name, the company is known for their ability to adapt to the crowd and play whatever keeps the crowd on their feet. In 2008, Garth decided to open a storefront location, operating as a music store. The DJ service is now housed in

this new location at 182 Broadway Street West in Yorkton. The store has two full time employees, Mike and Norm, who have the expertise and knowledge to help customers with their music questions. Customers can also get small repairs for electronics and stringed instruments. During the school year the upstairs is filled with the sound of music. Instructors offer voice, piano, guitar, drums, and now, newly added violin lessons. Anyone interested in learning any instrument is encouraged to call the store for

information and pricing. In-stock product lines include: Fender, Tanglewood, Sigma, Schecter and Peavey guitars, Roland and Casio pianos and keyboards, and Premiere and Crush drums. Over the past few years the company has expanded into the audio side of the industry and now offer installations of audio and visual equipment for halls and churches. Continually growing to become an inclusive one-stop music shop, this year they did the sound production for main stage performances, including GX 94 Star Search and Yorkton Exhibition Association grandstand. From the Wild to the Living Room Owning Exotic Pets By Tonya LamberT Photos CaLvin Fehr

P

eople have long had a fascination with the beauty and wonder of wild animals. Some people take their love of the wild into the living room, by adopting exotic animals to keep as pets. While a person’s reasons for keeping an exotic animal can be well meaning, there’s much to be considered before committing to owning one.

42

FineLifestyles

Parkland Saskatchewan

Kim and Pam Shaheen, a couple in Regina who own a serval, an African cat, could not agree more. About eight years ago, Pam Shaheen was sitting at her computer surfing the Internet when she came across an article on the serval and was immediately intrigued. After years of extensive research, Pam and her husband, Kim, made the decision to

adopt a serval as a pet. This decision was not made lightly as there were several factors to take into account. An exotic animal is an expensive addition to the family. You need to factor in not only the purchase price but also the cost of upkeep; many exotic animals require a special diet. You also have to take into

consideration the long-term commitment involved. While in the wild a serval will live six to 10 years, a domesticated serval can live up to 20 years (that is longer than the average marriage!). Many people adopt cats and dogs on a whim and when they realize it’s too much responsibility or are unhappy with the decision for other reasons, they take the pet to a shelter or give it away. Exotic pets are not always easy to re-home. Servals, for example, do not do well being away from their owners for very long; the Shaheens say they cannot go on trip longer than four to five days. “Having a serval is like having another child but one which will never grow up,” says Kim. Another thing to consider is the quality and reputation of the breeder. Doug Nelson, a breeder from Purrfound Cattery in British Columbia, flew out with Jagger, who was then seven weeks old, and stayed with the Shaheens for two nights to ease the transition. For those who have multiple pets, it’s important to research how exotic and domestic pets will adapt to one another. It’s crucial to look into the legalities of owning your preferred breed in the area where you live. The Shaheens had only had Jagger for eight months when they received a letter from the government in November of 2012 telling them that they had to remove him from the province. An anonymous complaint had been received from someone who feared the exotic animal was potentially dangerous. Having done his research, Kim knew this was not the case. The Shaheens, who were prepared to relocate in order to keep Jagger, are happy that they have not had to do so. Jagger continues to live with the couple in their Regina home and has been licensed as a pet by the city, a remarkably easy process for which the Shaheens commend the city. As a result of all the media attention, Jagger has become an ambassador cat for servals and regularly goes on visits to businesses, schools and nursing homes throughout the city and province. Kim enjoys teaching the public about the importance of responsible ownership and easing some of the misconceptions surrounding exotic pets. “Overall, Jagger is an absolutely outstanding pet,” declares Kim. Home Maintenance Musts for Winter Months By Apolline lucyk

As winter approaches, it is imperative to do maintenance work to prepare your home for the cold months ahead. To help you remember everything that needs to be done, Fine Homes has compiled a checklist to make it easier for you to get your house winter-ready in no time at all.

44

FineLifestyles

Parkland Saskatchewan

Check Your Indoor Heating System The fall is the best time to inspect your indoor heating system. SaskEnergy does a home checkup that tests the air quality and inspects for any furnace room hazards. This checkup also covers your chimney, thermostat and furnace switches, pilot safety systems, blower operation, burners, motor and fan, indoor gas lines, and the venting of all your natural gas appliances. This inspection is good to have done well before you begin using your furnace in the winter.

Indoor Home Maintenance

Test Your Sump Pump Your sump pump should be tested every few months to ensure it is still working — especially before a rainy season or before the cold months leading up to one. You can test your sump pump by simply pouring several gallons of water into it, slowly, to check that it turns on when it starts to fill.

Inspect Your Windows and Doors Check that the sealants on your windows and doors are still in good condition, and caulk around them to ensure that when they are closed, the spaces are sealed. Additionally, if you have older windows in your home, you may wish to consider upgrading them to ensure that you are retaining as much warm air inside of your house as possible.

Outdoor Home Maintenance Check Your Roof Before the snow arrives, it’s important to check your roof for any loose, damaged or missing shingles, which could cause leaks during the winter or spring. If any shingles need to be replaced it will be worth your while to do so before the snow settles.

Prepare Gutters and Drainage System To prepare for the winter and eventual melting period ahead, it’s important to clean your gutters of all the leaves and the debris that has surely collected over the summer months. This will ensure that when the snow and ice from your roof eventually begin to melt, it can drain easily and not get trapped in the gutters and on your roof.

Prepare Your Outdoor Water System Before the weather dips below zero, make sure your exterior faucets are all turned off and your lawn-irrigation system is drained to prevent water freezing in the hose or pipes — which could cause your irrigation system serious damage.

re you looking for new window coverings for your home, cottage or office, but the idea of picking out what works, measuring it right and then fighting with trying to make it fit feels overwhelming? Then you need to call Budget Blinds of East Central Saskatchewan. Jody Johnson and her staff take the stress and worry out of the whole process from choosing window coverings, to measuring right through to installation and they back everything with strong industry warranties and guarantees so you can rest easy knowing you’ve made the right decision. Johnson is a local professional who understands life is busy, and the more personalized a buying process can be the easier it is. “Our goal is make the process easy and stress-free for the customer, starting with our consultation and product selections, following that up with professional installation and providing peace of mind with comprehensive warranty. If our customer has exactly what they wanted and didn’t need to lift a finger or leave the house to get it then we’ve accomplished what we set out to do,” says Johnson. Budget Blinds is locally owned and operated but they have the power and buying clout of a large franchise to back them. There are hundreds of styles, colours, designs and textures to choose from. Bringing the choices to your home makes the decision easier and Johnson’s sparkling personality and her expertise make the consultation and ordering phase a fun and exciting part of the process. Clients can see the colours in their own light and see if they match the current décor of the house. They can see how different styles look in their space. Once the choice of window covering is made the professionals do the measuring to ensure you will have the proper fit when it arrives. For anyone who has struggled to install blinds or make things fit, Budget Blinds is the answer. When the window coverings arrive at the store a professional installer calls and arranges a time to come into your home and put them in place. All of this is standard procedure at Budget Blinds and the overall price is much less than you would anticipate.

“The feedback we often get from customers is that they can’t believe how many styles of blinds and shades there are to choose from and that they thought they would have to pay much more to get exactly what they want,” says Johnson. Sometimes just a peak at the many options available and some advice on what will work best in your environment can inspire you to start the process of enhancing your space. Budget Blinds of East Central Saskatchewan brings you window coverings that are sure to impress any guest. Their unmatched level of service starts with a simple call. Window coverings made easy. or a young Sid Matsalla, he had no trouble riding a horse that wasn’t broke. While Matsalla’s dad owned the horse for cleaning and pulling hay, Matsalla would ride the horse everywhere, and it eventually inspired a career involving raising and training horses on 80 acres of land in Yorkton. “It was one horse that led to 28,” he beams.

52

FineLifestyles

Parkland Saskatchewan

Matsalla and his wife, Deb, began training horses 10 years ago. Matsalla’s daughter, Makayla, also helps out. Deb gets the horses used to wearing a halter and does the groundwork to help them calm down, while Makayla cleans and picks up on little things that need to be fixed or corrected. “Makayla’s fearless,” says Matsalla. “She wants to grow up to be a horse trainer and find a cowboy with cattle to marry!”

Currently Matsalla has one stallion, five to nine fillies and anywhere from five to 12 mares for breeding. For Matsalla and his family, it’s hard to say goodbye to the horses. “We all take part in the training and we very rarely sell yearlings. We usually keep them till they’re two.” While Matsalla works a full-time job in Estevan, he’s also rents out an arena

space there and brings a few horses to train and play with during the day. “I work 12 hour days, where I work a certain number of days on and then have a certain number of days off,” he explains. “This way I can do both.” Matsalla recently returned from the Colt Challenge in Alberta where 10 trainers from across Canada are chosen and given 60 days to train a two-year-old horse. “In the Colt Challenge, it’s being able to show off the basics in training,” says Matsalla. “Like having the horse stop on the word ‘woah’ instead of being pulled by the reigns, as well as backing up with its mouth

closed and doing a 180 on its hind legs.” This is Matsalla’s second year in the challenge, which he regards as honour for simply being picked. “We may not have placed, but the people who run the Colt Challenge gave me permission to train their horses, which is a rewarding experience because it takes a lot to quiet down a horse.” After the Colt Challenge is finished, the horses go up for sale. Last year, Matsalla’s horse went to a young lady with an interest in cow and horse events. She also carries the Canadian flag at rodeos. “This year,” says Matsalla. “It went to a young

lady who participates in the Western Pleasure Show, where you and your horse are judged on posture and skill — it’s really a spin on English riding.” While Matsalla prefers not to compete in these types of competitions with his horses, he’s researched one competition that involves cowboy mounted shooting. “We do very little competing, but when I learned about this challenge, I wanted to learn more,” he says. Matsalla explains that the horse has to be broken to the sound of an old Western gun with powder. “But we’ll see,” he muses. “I’ve always been more into training and riding for the pleasure of it.”

Your Dog's

Home Away From Home By Melanie Furlong Photos Judith Stewart Photography

I

f you're looking for an idyllic setting for your dog to spend a day or a few weeks, you must visit Dee's Kennels. Located just 25 minutes from Yorkton and seven minutes from Good Spirit Lake, the new kennel located on the Valstar family’s cattle farm is truly a canine dream. Set up with two playgrounds and equipment, including pools for the dogs to swim in, the farm has plenty of pasture and hay fields where your best friends can walk and play under Dee Valstar's expert supervision. Valstar, originally a veterinary technician with more than 17

54

years experience, recently opened Dee's Kennels to resounding success. Joe and Penny Sandercock brought Nika, their seven-year-old Rottweiler, to Dee's Kennels while they went on a one-week vacation. “We came home to a very happy dog,” says Penny Sandercock. “It makes our lives so much easier knowing that all the people at Dee's Kennels love our dog and all the dogs there as much as we do. The Valstar family make it a fabulous place for anyone to drop off their pets and feel good doing it. Nika cannot wait till her next visit!”

Valstar's daughters, Thea, 13, and Annelies, 10, are instrumental in the family business. They help walk, clean and play with the dogs. “They're excellent with the dogs and they love it,” says Valstar. Her husband, Paul, did a lot of the work to set up the facility. “He put up all the kennels and playgrounds,” says Valstar, “and the girls helped him with that too.” The Valstar's own two dogs, Gabby and Shrek, who are also part of Dee's Kennels' charm. They always welcome new dogs and help make them feel comfortable and at home.

Dogs that require special diets or the administration of medicine are very welcome at Dee's Kennels. Every dog also has a Kuranda Orthopedic Bed in its kennel for optimum support, which is especially important for geriatric dogs. If you'd like to keep in touch with Valstar on Facebook while you're out of town, she'll keep you in the loop by posting photos of your dog. She will also keep in touch by phone or text if you have any questions while you are away. Noeline Swan says her dogs, Chloe and Gucci, were welcomed by Dee as if they were family. “The loving care that they

received from Dee and her family made it a home away from home stay,” says Swan. “They were fed according to their preference, excercised daily, played with and groomed regularly. They particularly loved the long walks.” Swan also made arrangements for the dogs to be groomed spaniel-style, which Valstar, who also offers grooming services by appointment, did expertly. “When we collected Chloe and Gucci, they went to Dee first for approval, which was a sure sign that they were loving their vacation!” says Swan. “Dee went the extra mile to call a few days later to enquire how the girls were keeping. We absolutely will use Dee's Kennels again.”

Hotrod a “Driving” Force Behind Children’s Hospital By Tonya Lambert

A

unique hotrod designed and built in Saskatchewan is a major driving force in the bid to raise money to build a children’s hospital in the province. Snakebit, described by celebrity promoter Gene Simmons of KISS as “the most unique vehicle on planet Earth,” was auctioned off at Barrett Jackson, a premier car collectors’ auction, in Scottsdale, Arizona, on January 17, 2014, for $450,000. The unique Ford F-100/Shelby Cobra Mustang hybrid was purchased by Gordie Broda and family of Prince Albert. Mr. Broda noted that the family are strong supporters of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan and are proud to have made the donation.

56

FineLifestyles

Parkland Saskatchewan

Snakebit is yet another example of how the people of Saskatchewan pull together to support each other. Designed by Bruce Williams and built by Byron Thiessen, owner of Creative Concepts and Restorations (CCR) in Warman, this project received a big kick-start with a $50,000 contribution from the Ford Dealers of Saskatchewan (FDS). Snakebit is a one-of-a-kind vehicle took 2,000 man-hours and three years to create at a cost of over $300,000. Everything needed to build this unique vehicle — cash, parts and services — were supplied by individual and corporate donors from around the province.

The exposure that Snakebit’s appearance at the auction has garnered for the Children’s Hospital Foundation is phenomenal — thousands of people attended the event (including Premier Brad Wall and Saskatchewan PGA golfer Graham DeLaet) and millions more watched the auction on television. In addition to the $450,000 paid by the Broda family, over $90,000 of donations have been made to the project’s Wheels of Dreams website to date and many more have been made directly to the foundation. Construction on the Saskatchewan Children’s Hospital is scheduled to begin in 2016.

Stop in at our beautiful new showroom and begin to discover all the possibilities.

We’ve had a great time meeting so many nice people and working with them to choose new window fashions for their homes, cottages and businesses this summer. Take a look at what a few of our satisfied customers are saying about us... “Wow...what a great experience I had with Budget Blinds! I wasn’t sure what I was looking for when I decided I needed new window coverings but one phone call to Jody changed all of that. Her in-home consultation was amazing as I got to see how different styles and colours looked with my paint, lighting and décor and it made the process so easy. Now that the new blinds are installed, I am thrilled with what we picked and the entire process overall. Thank You Budget Blinds!” - Anne “Jody and her staff were so courteous and easy to deal with that I can’t imagine going through this process any other way. Simply put, I didn’t think it was possible to get beautiful, custom blinds professionally installed at such a great price in small town Saskatchewan. I was absolutely blown away by the consultation, amazing selection, friendly service and caring advice. I would highly recommend Budget Blinds to anyone!” – Tammy

Jody Johnson, owner jjohnson@budgetblinds.com

“The in-home consultation was fantastic as I got to see how the different options matched my furniture, my flooring, my décor and the room lighting before I made a decision. And having Jody do the measuring meant it was done right. Coming home to the blinds installed meant no fighting with a tape measure, a drill and my husband to get them hung up right. The people at Budget Blinds are professional and they know what they are doing. We wouldn’t go any anywhere else.” – Susan
