BURBER COMBINING SENSE AND STYLE

FOR 160 YEARS

By Tonya Lambert

urberry of London has been combining commonsense, durable materials and design with exceptional style for discerning clients for more than 160 years. This British luxury fashion house has long been a leader in the industry, introducing innovative materials and original designs to meet the changing needs of consumers. Founded by 21-year-old dressmaker Thomas Burberry in Basingstoke in 1856, the company expanded as more and more people were introduced to the exceptionally tailored, fashionable couture. By 1891, the firm’s first London location had opened, and in 1909 a Paris branch was opened as well. Today, Burberry has more than 500 stores in 50 countries and their products can also be found on the shelves of exclusive boutiques worldwide. The company’s philosophy is proudly displayed on their Equestrian Knight logo: Prorsum. The Latin word for ‘forward,’ prorsum neatly encapsulates the company’s successful approach to fashion and business. Over the years, Burberry has garnered a reputation for pushing boundaries and has been the outerwear of choice for pioneering aviators, explorers and adventurers of all sorts. Burberry Prorsum is the name applied to the company’s most fashion-forward collection. The luxury firm also has two other collections. Burberry London is a more professional, tailored look, perfect for the office, while Burberry Brit is their casual clothing line, ideal for relaxing on the weekends. All three current collections are full of contrasting textures and beautiful, rich jewel tones. The warmth

Like the clothing collections, the latest Burberry bags play with contrasting textures of leather, inspired by heritage rug designs and techniques. Ladies will love the velvet tufted patterns of The Bloomsbury as well as the grainy leather and shearling of The Orchard. The sharp-looking embellished metal detailing adds to each bag’s appeal. Since 2006, the company has cut back sharply on the use of their signature check patterns. In Canada, Burberry has stores in seven cities — Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City. In addition, the prestigious Burberry lines of clothing, fashion accessories, fragrances, sunglasses and cosmetics are found in leading luxury stores across the country.

SHEA EMRY & THE WELLMEN PROJECT

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A

MAN By Tonya Lambert

HEALTH & WELLNESS

A

s a two-time Grey Cup champion and middle linebacker, Saskatchewan Roughrider’s Shea Emry is someone whose professional role is one which very much aligns with traditional Western notions of masculinity, requiring him to be physical, strong, aggressive and decisive. As a team leader, it is Emry’s job to make sure the defense is organized when they are on the field. He must understand each player’s style of play and be able to interpret their movements quickly and accurately. It may be surprising that the ways in which Emry prepares to fulfill his hypermasculine role each game day are ones which many consider feminine. “On game days, I do yoga and meditate to calm down. I need to be calm enough to make quick decisions on the field.” As a child growing up in Richmond, BC, Emry was bullied. In a world where boys and men were taught not to reveal their emotions, Emry buried his. Luckily for him, as a gifted athlete, he was able to channel a great deal of his anger and energy into football. However, this wasn’t always enough. Full of repressed emotions, Emry suffered bouts of depression. When a concussion in 2011 left him confined to a darkened room for three months, the depression returned. This time, however, Emry decided to tackle the problem head on. Together with partner Devon Brooks, he founded The Wellmen Project, an organization devoted to helping men learn to express their emotions and vulnerabilities. “Wellmen is about self-care and owning your emotions,” explains Emry. “The prevailing perception of masculinity, as well as the social conditioning pertaining to it, are inherently restrictive to the evolution of men and perpetuate the predominant stigmatization of mental illness. Wellmen is after systemic socio-cultural change by challenging the limiting belief systems around what it really means to be a man.”

The early 21st century is a time of transition. Gendered norms are being challenged like never before. Boundaries are becoming more fluid, more flexible. There is a move away from rigid definitions of what it means to a man or a woman and a slow but steady shift towards seeing individuals first and foremost as unique and complex human beings.

While no two Wellmen adventures are exactly alike, they all combine radical outdoor adventures with previously feminized activities — of which a majority of men would be too guarded to partake in on their own — and encourage reflection and openness. The idea is to provide a communal environment in which men feel safe comfortable, masculine and able to confront their fears and explore deeper emotional issues while providing them with tools through which to do so. “Remaining silent and keeping your emotions in can become highly toxic,” warns Emry. “True strength lies in the ability to be vulnerable, to connect with your surroundings and be emotive. The Wellmen Project is about building connections — with your feelings, with others, with nature and the world around you.” Emry is to be commended for his efforts to improve men’s mental health. He admits his endeavours

“Playing for the Riders gives me the opportunity to play the game I love in a province that appreciates its players so much.” have been somewhat hampered by his moves in the past few years. After spending six seasons with the Montreal Alouettes, he was traded to the Toronto Argonauts last year. Then, on January 23, the Saskatchewan Roughriders acquired him in a trade involving defensive end Rick Foley. As a result, The Wellmen Project will now be pursuing adventures in the province. “At the moment, participation in the program is by invite only because of the attentiveness necessary when facilitating the intimate experiences,” explains Emry. “However, we want to expand and touch more lives. Our mission is the metamorphosis of manliness. We partner with thought leaders, utilizing cutting edge research to build radical experiences and opportunities that make a man’s personal evolution an adventure he never wants to end. We are currently looking for investors, partnerships and collaborators to help us do this. You can reach out to Wellmen at becomewellmen@gmail.com.” Emry is excited to be a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. “I am stoked about playing for Saskatchewan,” says Emry. “Everyone knows about the energy of Rider Nation and I am excited to now be a part of that. Playing for the Riders gives me the opportunity to play the game I love in a province that appreciates its players so much.” In his roles as player and role model, there is certainly a lot to appreciate in Shea Emry. above photos courtesy Saskatchewan Roughriders

Healing, learning and Freedom

from the Deadly Grip of Addiction By Melanie Furlong Photos Alicia Leclercq

A

ddicts and their families should never give up on the struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. Ardyth Wilson, an alcoholic in recovery, knows this from personal experience. She got sober 30 years ago, but lost her brother, Dwight, to his addictions at a young age. This was one of the catalysts that drove Wilson to open the Leipzig Serenity Retreat seven years ago in Wilkie, SK., making it the only privately run addictions centre in the province. The beautiful retreat, located in an 88-year-old former convent, provides a warm, welcoming environment for addicts in a non-institutional setting. All the staff at Leipzig Serenity Retreat are

either in recovery themselves or have family members who are. Their fiveweek program is based on the 12 step philosophical ideas used by more than 350 organizations. Ms. Wilson states, “Many centres only do steps one to three or one to five, but we do all 12 of the steps here.” Working on her own, it took Wilson almost one year to do the 12 Steps and it was a very painful process. At Leipzig Serenity Retreat, they explore all the steps in five weeks. “Years ago, you could find someone in AA who would help you go through the steps,” she says. “It appears to be harder for people to give the kind of time you need to get clean and sober nowadays. When they come here

HEALTH & WELLNESS

and learn the steps, they’re more apt to continue with their recovery and build a healthy support network.” Also offered is one-on-one counselling, small group counselling, meditation sessions and an emotional wellness program designed at Leipzig Serenity Retreat. The emotional wellness classes explore self-esteem issues, negative core beliefs and biased expectations. This exploration helps clients redefine and examine their own morals, values and beliefs. Ms. Wilson attributes their high rate of success to the intimate relaxed setting and high counsellor-client ratio. The retreat can accommodate up to a

maximum of 18 clients at one time and has three full-time counsellors on staff as well as peer support workers. Last year, 127 clients 18 years old and up took part in their programs. A client named Sam says, “I could not have asked for a better serenity retreat. The grounds are beautiful and huge and the staff is amazing and very helpful. My five weeks went by so fast and the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions helped me through it. I appreciate all that you have done for me!” While it’s heartbreaking to see the damage already done to young addicts, Wilson is adamant they are not without

hope. “Watching people change is the most fulfilling part of our jobs,” she says. Anyone who requests a tour of the facility is welcome and staff members are happy to answer questions from addicts or their families about the program. If you or anyone you know could benefit from the services at Leipzig Serenity Retreat, give them a call. This special place is changing lives for the better. RosĂŠ

Wines

for summer Bring a Blush to Your Cheeks, and Your Glass By Cheryl Doherty

Try These rosé wines available in saskaTchewan:

Barefoot Refresh Perfectly Pink A blend of mandarin orange and peach aromas with flavours of raspberry and cherry. $13

For many of us the idea of rosé wine conjures up memories of putting a candle in a just finished bottle of Mateus or quaffing girly glasses of sickly-sweet white zinfandels. But time, tastes and wine techniques change, as do attitudes. When a decidedly masculine Hollywood titan like Brad Pitt starts producing a quality rosé wine, even the most skeptical of the macho men have to sit up and take notice.

R

osé is any wine with a colour spectrum from a barely perceptible pink to a pale red. Quality rosé wines have been produced for millennia in the South of France and it’s an accepted fact that the first wines ever produced were rosés. These wines are still the benchmark for quality; dry wines refreshing enough for a hot summer’s day but with enough depth and complexity to complement a wide array of food. Rosé wines have recently experienced a renaissance, which has driven up prices somewhat, but they still tend to be a very good value for money. Most rosé wines are created from red grapes by allowing a short maceration of the juice with the skins after crushing. The time of maceration ranges from a few hours for dark pigmented grapes to a day or two for lighter skinned varieties. This allows transfer of colour from the skins.

Yellowglen Pink - Foster's Wine Estates Americas Co. A pink sparkling wine with the aromas of strawberries, berries and lemon-lime. $15

The juice is then pressed or drained away from the skins for fermentation. Some basic rosés are created by blending a small amount of finished red wine with white, but the hue and flavour of these wines are quite different, and generally not of the same quality. An exception to this would be rosé wines from champagne, where blending of red and white wines is sanctioned and strictly controlled. Rosé wines pair incredibly well with a diversity of food. From sushi to charcuterie to barbecue, there may not be a better all-purpose food wine. They are wines worthy of any social gathering or quiet summer sip in the backyard. A bit of sun, a bit of wine, some great food … what better way to bring some colour to our cheeks? Don’t forget to add a candle to the empty bottle for an added glow — and nostalgia.

History Re-opens its Doors at Burns’ House Bed and Breakfast

urns’ House Bed and Breakfast was built in 1919 by John Burns. It was occupied until the 1970s and left empty

FineLifestyles

until 2003. It was in 2003 that Harry and Sheila Larson were shown the house by a friend who had lived in the house as a child.

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

Harry and Sheila felt sadness looking at the old and derelict heritage T. Eaton’s house. Occupied by raccoons and rodents, the roof was leaking and the

stone foundation was slowly collapsing under the house. Naively, Harry and Sheila felt it would be a good project to restore and dreamed of repurposing the house as a bed and breakfast. They felt it would have a happy and useful future. The house still belonged to the Burns family. A son, living in Toronto, owned and insured the house with a local insurance office, Ogema Agencies Insurance. Carol Peterson, owner of the insurance office, had originally shown the house to Harry and Sheila and provided them with contact information for Mr. Burns. Sheila contacted Mr. Cecil Burns, son of John Burns, and an agreement was reached for the purchase of the house for $3,000 after a short discussion regarding the purchase price. Sheila remarked on the derelict condition of the house, the leaky roof and general poor condition inside and out. Cecil needed a few moments to recall the “new” roof was put onto the house in the 1950s! The purchase price of the house was very reasonable, but soon costs began to add

up over the next few years. The house was moved, gutted to the 2x4 stud walls, reroofed, rewired, re-plumbed, re-insulated, added onto and only then did the house begin to take new shape. Slowly but surely, Harry and Sheila brought the old house back to life. Having taken many breaks along the way, in part to save money, but also to deal with the events of daily life, including the farm, to work, to relax a bit here and there, and also complete another renovation project or two. But finally, the house was complete. As a catalogue T. Eaton’s house, it was never an especially elegant or expensive house and it remains the same today. Fir floors and trim have been preserved and re-stained. It was the straightforward farmhouse of a working family. Every effort has been made where possible to restore that same ambiance while modernizing essential aspects. Additionally, found treasures and memorabilia from the house itself are on display.

to the local communities for small events such as dinners, parties, weddings and receptions. Plans to exhibit local crafts and artisans are underway and also being considered are events such as musicals and dinner theatres. Harry and Sheila hope the house can come alive again as a bed and breakfast with accommodation for eight available in four rooms. It is hoped it will be a place for community members to celebrate the many occasions in their lives. Burns’ House Bed and Breakfast Pangman 306.459.7448 shlarson2012@hotmail.com

SPORTS, RECREATION & TRAVEL

Buzz is building for the

2016 SASKATCHEWAN SUMMER GAMES By Kim Mannix Vermette Photos courtesy Saskatchewan Summer Games

T

he 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games may be a year away, but in the host city of Estevan, the buzz is already electric. The Summer Games will be the biggest multisport event in the province, with 1,800 athletes competing, 6,000 spectators expected and more than 2,000 volunteers required to pull it off. The event will also bring more than a million dollars of economic spin-off into the community by providing a lasting legacy of facilities and projects that will continue to benefit the area for years to come. “It is very exciting for Estevan and the support so far from the people and businesses in the community has been just phenomenal,” says Brian Senchuk who co-chairs the games with Brian Smith. The motto for the 2016 event is “Energizing the Games,” which encompasses both the spirit and the economic base of the community. The area is rich in oil and natural resources, and Estevan itself holds the delightful distinction of being the sunshine capital of Canada. “The tagline also sums up the enthusiasm of our committee and all the volunteers who are working to make these the best games they can be,” says Senchuk. Projects leading up to the games are helping to build the excitement, such as a multitude of fundraisers, volunteer recruitment, corporate sponsor signups and a contest co-sponsored by SaskMusic to find a new theme song that will be used for the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2016 and 2018 games.

The meshing of sports and culture is something that happens naturally when large sporting events such as this arrive in a community, but Smith says the host committee has planned several ways to showcase the rich cultural and heritage institutions in Estevan. “There is, of course, so much that goes into the week of the games, but we’re certainly kept busy leading up. This is the time when we want to remind people of the huge scope of these games and how exciting it can be to get involved in something that will positively impact our city for years to come,” says Smith. For sponsors, the committee has planned attractive recognition programs through extensive promotion of the games. There are also opportunities for sponsors to get involved in the development of new track and field facilities as well as other projects that will keep their businesses synonymous with the games for the next decade. The recruitment and training of volunteers is vital to the success of the games. In addition to the good feelings that come from being a part of an event as big as the Summer Games, Senchuk believes the volunteer spirit also becomes part of the legacy. “When people volunteer and see how much fun it is and the positivity it brings to themselves and to the community, they keep coming back and finding other ways to give,” he says. The 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games run July 24-30 in Estevan. To learn more about sponsorship and volunteer opportunities, visit www.saskgames.ca/ summer or call 306-687-2016.

Other things like counter height and depth need to be considered (especially for dishwashers), as well as counter allowance for slide-in ranges.

A

ppliances can make or break the look of a room. Replacing ’70s appliances with shiny, stainless steel models can bring a kitchen into the 21st century more effectively than any other upgrade. Go Pro Just because you’re not a professional chef doesn’t mean your kitchen shouldn’t be professional grade. Lines like the new Frigidaire professional suite come in standard sizes (minimizing or even eliminating the amount of renovations needed to install them) and are priced so the average homeowner can afford them. The great part about the aesthetic of professional style appliances? They have a truly classic look that can seamlessly fit into any kitchen style. Last But Not Least Jumping the gun on appliance purchases can cost you in the long run if you haven’t properly planned the space. Make sure you extensively plan the layout of your kitchen. If an 18-inch dishwasher just won’t cut it, make sure you delegate space for a full 24-inch model. Don’t get stuck with appliances you don’t like just because you didn’t plan properly.

It’s easy BeING GreeN Old appliances have a financial and environmental cost. A new, energy efficient fridge can save you up to $200 a year, meaning you recoup the purchase price in a couple years. ENERGY STAR compliant dishwashers not only use 50 to 75 per cent less energy than older models, but also much less water – as little as three gallons for a full cycle. If three gallons sounds like a lot, keep in mind you can use almost 10 times that by washing dishes by hand. Front load washers can cost as little as $20/year to operate, and since 90 per cent of the energy used to wash clothes is spent heating the water, switching to cold water can make a noticeable difference. DoN’t Let the eLectrIc sLIDe Appliances eat up a lot of the electrical bandwidth in your home. Laundry and kitchen appliances alone can take up a big portion of your panel, and when you add in things like air conditioning, it can get tight. This is especially true if you have an income suite in your home, which means two kitchens and often two washers and dryers. We recently shot an episode of Income Property where the homeowners ended up having to upgrade their electrical panel to accommodate the addition of a dishwasher and upstairs laundry. This was above and beyond what they had planned to spend because it never occurred to them that their current electrical panel wasn’t sufficient. If you have a newer home, chances are this won’t be an issue. However if you’re buying an older home (like many in the core areas of most major cities), it’s something you may need to consider.

Do sweat the smaLL stuff There are many small details that can slip your mind, or you don’t even think of in the first place. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen fridge doors that can’t

A graceful neutral allows some light in and provides a foundation for the room. 2 | ADD A POP OF COLOUR Nothing expands and improves décor quite like deep, bold color. And when that colour is added via gently flowing folds of drapery, it arrives hand-in-hand with improved insulation, privacy and light control.

infinite options, you can create geometric arrangements, stripes by staining alternating planks, chevron patterns or an intricately stenciled design. These innovative techniques add a whole new dimension to the look of a room. Whitewashing is also very popular, creating a French country look in your home. To whitewash floors, you need to strip the colour, bleach (often more than

And with bright floor colours and neutral walls, you can maintain the clean modern look while inverting expectation. once), stain, and then seal. Whitewashed floors are the perfect blank canvas for a minimalist and clean style. Painting the floor with bright colours is not a new idea. Baroness Pauline de Rothschild, for example, was inspired by the European castles she had seen in her travels, and she recreated the look in her London flat. A writer, translator and fashion designer, Rothschild was a reputable tastemaker in the 1950s and 1960s, and her painted floors were well known. Inspired by her bold use of colour,

Distressed or reclaimed wood is also used for rustic appeal, adding rich character to your floor. Distressing the wood involves aging it, scraping it by hand or with steel wire, or sculpting it to add texture. Reclaimed wood is often taken from barns, factories or warehouses, and is popular not only for its unique appearance, but also as an environmentally-conscious option. For a truly matte look, ebonizing wood goes a step further than a simple stain or dye. It actually causes a chemical reaction that makes the wood turn pitch

black, and when it is done properly, the grain should not be visible, making it darker than ebony wood itself. To ebonize wood, choose a hardwood with a high concentration of tannins (the same as found in wine or tea). Oak, cherry and walnut are all good options. This technique was originally popular in the 1920s, but has resurfaced today. For a less intense look, adding dye to a stain can give it that rich, dark look that hides the imperfections of the grain in hard-to-stain woods. For modern appeal with a classic twist, a dark matte floor paired with light coloured furniture creates a good contrast. Try something different with hardwood — and take a walk on the finer side!

Five Things to Consider When Buying Your First Home

A

s a renter, you have the luxury of choosing a place that meets your needs at the moment. Buying a home is a much bigger commitment, both in terms of finances and the length of time you’ll likely live there. When seeking out your first place, whether a house or condominium or anything in between, it’s important to do your homework. Here are five things to consider as you begin the process of purchasing your first place.

Rhonda Blanchette Real Estate Agent Re/max Blue Chip Realty 902 4th St. estevan 306.461.9791 rblanchette@remax.net www.rblanchette.remax.ca

1. The growth possibilities. Shop for a place that meets your current space needs, but also consider one that can adjust to a changing household. A fiveyear plan may not pan out as you expect, so think about possible life changes that could impact your need for bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage. 2. Find out what’s under the hood. Your first place may not come with many frills or luxury features, but all the basics should be in good condition. Thoroughly inspect prospective properties. It is a must to hire a professional inspector before any purchase is made. Your real estate agent can guide you through this key step. 3. Know that no home will be perfect. Your first home may likely not be the perfect place. But make it the right one. Finding the right home is often a matter of prioritizing. Make a list of

34

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

HOUSE & HOME

“must haves,” along with “nice to haves” and “not necessary to haves.” A threecar garage is nice, but would you rather have a larger kitchen or live in a good neighbourhood? Only you can measure the importance of the amenities you are looking for. 4. Consider ALL the costs of ownership. When you buy a home, you take on recurring costs you don’t have to worry about as a renter. Look for a home that meets your budget in terms of full living costs — mortgage, utilities, trash pick-up, sewage fees, homeowner’s association dues and other fees. Your lender doesn’t take into account these costs when approving your home loan. A good real estate agent can help you calculate estimated monthly costs to determine the most appropriate price range for you. 5. The lifespan of things. In addition to identifying cosmetic and structural flaws before you buy, know what to expect from the home’s components. How long until you need to replace the roof, appliances, furnace or carpet? Everything may be in working order now, but all homes need these types of repairs at some point. Researching the expected remaining life on large-ticket items can help you plan for the future. When you’re ready to start the process of buying a home, a local RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agent will be ready to help.

A History of Retail in Downtown Weyburn

n the early 1900s, Weyburn Hardware opened in the location now known as the Metro Centre. This store was operated by a number of different proprietors over the years. In the late ‘50s, the fine brick building and all of its contents were destroyed by a fire and was subsequently rebuilt in 1957 by the Guildner Brothers. In 1973, the store became the Metropolitan Store, serving customers on two levels until 1993. From 1995 to 2001, the location was home to Oasis Furniture. After sitting empty for two years, current owner John Georgacacos and Weyburn Coop realized the need for revitalization in downtown Weyburn. In 2005, it was reopened as the Metro Centre, anchored by Prairie Sky Co-op’s Expressions Ladies Fashions and Outdoor Adventures sporting goods on the main level.

The Weyburn Credit Union Legacy By Brooke Charlton Photos Images by Gillies

eyburn Credit Union (WCU) has a large footprint in downtown Weyburn. From small beginnings in a shoebox to presently spanning an entire city block, WCU has proudly been a part of downtown Weyburn since 1944. What began as a dream for some area residents for local control and decision making has grown into an impressive financial institution that has never lost sight of its core values and its promise to the community and its people. Weyburn Credit Union is the financial institution of choice for many Weyburn

and area residents and they are proud of the relationships they’ve built. The founding board members wanted a financial institution committed not just to profits, but to strengthening the community. This has been an easy goal to meet; they are proud of their history and community and take pride in contributing. Over the years, WCU has been a partner to many of the small business owners that have played a role in building the downtown core. From providing the mortgage for their buildings to financing operating lines of credit and everything in between, this partnership has produced some outstanding results. WCU’s

HOUSE & HOME

members place their trust with their money and what better way to show WCU’s appreciation than to invest it back in the community? But it’s not all work; they’ve had a lot of fun over the years in downtown Weyburn. WCU has held its annual Kickoff to Summer BBQ since 2003 and despite a few rained out years, it’s been a great success. Hamburgers & hotdogs, carnival games and freezies — it’s a mini fair on Coteau Ave. And of course you can be sure FatCat always makes an appearance when there is a special occasion! He had a great time handing out treats at the Chamber

of Commerce Fair Parade this year, and he always looks forward to the Parade of Lights in December — he loves seeing Santa every year! As a locally owned co-operative, being involved in and giving back to the community is very important to WCU. Among many other causes, they’ve been raising funds for the annual Communithon event since it began. For many years you could have witnessed the “chair race” which was a friendly competition between WCU and other local banks. Bankers would doctor up their office chairs to create the fastest model and race up and down Third Street to the finish line. WCU packs its popular Community Room every year for the Communithon pancake breakfast fundraiser, partnering with Prairie Sky Coop and Access Communications. The Community Room is a popular venue for fundraisers, meetings and even the occasional party. WCU is a full-service financial institution in the heart of a small town. For every stage of life and for every life event, they can provide the tools and support needed for financial success. Even though the people and the storefronts change over the years, one thing remains constant: Weyburn Credit Union is committed to the well-being of Weyburn and its people. Weyburn and its residents need a financial partner who understands their business, their community and their lives, and Weyburn Credit Union is a trusted institution at your service. room to be full of diffused light, while still providing privacy and value. Some worry purchasing blinds from a design centre store such as Weyburn Carpet One Floor and Home will automatically mean higher prices, but that is simply not the case. Every blind is custom-made, which means a custommade price, based on what the customer needs, wants and can afford.

Once customers have chosen the perfect window coverings to suit their home and lifestyle, they can leave the oftencomplicated installation process up to the professionals. Weyburn Carpet One Floor and Home has dependable and quick installers so you can relax and enjoy your new look. Whether building or redesigning, it makes sense to put in products that will last, look amazing and be cost effective. That is what blinds from Weyburn Carpet One Floor and Home will do for you and your home.

It’s Good to be Home By Brook Thalgott

ani Rubin, a veteran in Weyburn’s real estate market, decided to strike out on her own and launched Renew Realty Inc. in January 2015. “I have been working as a realtor in the Weyburn area for almost 15 years,” says Rubin. “And now I am the owner at my own brokerage. It’s been exciting to venture out on my own.” Rubin is joined by Carole Vogel, another realtor very familiar with the Southeast real estate market. Together, they are bringing a new level of service to Weyburn and area buyers and sellers. Priding themselves on straightforward, honest service and extensive knowledge of the real estate industry, they are active and present for each client they serve.

Between them, Rubin and Vogel have nearly two decades of experience in all facets of real estate including residential, commercial, farm/acreage and new construction. No matter what you’re looking for, Renew Realty is committed to renewing your confidence in real estate. No matter when and where you need to do business, Rubin and Vogel will be there. They’re mobile — meaning they come to you whenever you need them and they’re always happy to set up appointments when you need to at their office. “Whether you’re a first time home buyer or looking to sell a new construction condo project, we can make your buying or selling experience great,” says Rubin.

Rubin’s great service doesn’t end with a home sale. If you’re a homeowner facing the unthinkable, she can help. Rubin is also an owner of Renew Disaster Cleanup, proudly serving southern Saskatchewan. Renew Disaster Cleanup is there when you’re faced with home damage and don’t even know where to begin. It started with a flood in her own home. She now has a team of more than 30 that assists any homeowner with a disaster on their hands. Included in her management team of seven is her fiancé Darcy Walby and his brother Jamie. “It was our own experience with a home catastrophe that prompted us to start a business for people faced with a huge misfortune and nowhere to turn,” says Walby. “A year ABOVE L-R Dani Rubin and Carole Vogel

later, we’ve grown tremendously. We’re helping people get their homes back in order, not only quickly, but well.” What sets Renew apart from other contractors is their commitment to their customers. The company is also dedicated to ensuring each step of the cleanup and repair process is done right. “We have a full-time staff member who audits every job we do. We make sure everything is done right before we move onto the next step,” says Walby. “There’s no one else in the market with this process, and it provides a level of reassurance that our customers appreciate and rely on.” The Renew team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week; because most home disasters don’t happen during office hours. “If you’re faced with a flood or fire or other major issue, the first call you make should

be to us,” says Walby. “The second call should be to your insurance company. We can help guide you through the whole process from initial cleanup right through to repair and renovation.” Whether you’re in the real estate market or needing help with your home after something unfortunate, there’s a Renew for you. I

am often asked how I have been able to become successful in the variety of business ventures I have undertaken throughout my career. The obvious responses one would expect are ambition, hard work and dedication. Of course, those are all true, but the answer I would provide is much simpler and is the foundation of everything I have ever accomplished. The most valuable investment I have ever made and continue to make is in my education. No matter what I do, no matter how many businesses I own, my education has proven itself an asset that will always find ways to make me money.

62

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

The experts out there — the ones in the top of their respective fields — never stop learning. They cannot afford to. They understand the importance of investing in themselves, whether it be through personal development, sharpening previously acquired skills or developing new ones. Education is a surefire way to continue setting the bar higher for yourself, and truly successful people can never have their bar set too high. Why? Because they know that to stay at the top, they must never stop reaching. One of my current sources of education is my business coach, Ray Higdon. Ray teaches a method he refers to as ILT, a method he credits for his vast success in network marketing. ILT — Invest Learn Teach — is a simple yet effective method for reaching unlimited success in your life. The idea is you invest in yourself through education (classroom, coaching, reading,

BUSINESS

webinars and conferences). You then convert that education into action (working toward your objective). Once you have succeeded at your goal, you take that education and experience and share it with others. When you have accomplished what you set out to do, you begin again. How have I applied the “Invest Learn Teach” method to my career? The ILT method has followed me through my career and made it possible for me to not only succeed at several goals and passions, but to also support a lot of people in making a lot of money. My journey really started when I began working in mutual funds. Throughout my career as a certified financial planner, I obtained a wealth of education and experience with regard to investing. When I decided to shift my expertise exclusively into real estate, even though

I was no longer using my previous education or experience the same way, it never ceased to provide me with value. My investment background helped me navigate and speak the new language. It also expedited the steep learning curve in front of me. Once I combined that with my determination and willingness to continue advancing, it did not take me long to succeed. In five short years, my husband and I went from two properties to 302. During that time, we not only learned how to invest in real estate, we learned how to invest in real estate using other people’s money. We became skilled at selecting quality property, managing that property’s needs and providing a profitable rate of return for not only ourselves, but for our investors as well. When I think back to my decision to shift my professional focus to real estate, I can see how far I have come. I have

learned so much since those first few real estate courses. I am more confident. I have more control over my life and that provides me with the freedom I need to start the ascent into the next phase of my development as a wealth coach. Coaching allows me to share the value of my experience with others through group training. Becoming a wealth coach was a viable next step for me because I understand the value of being a good resource. I thrive on educating myself through the same processes. I teach because I learn. Studying wealth, personal development and business has made me fluent in the languages of goal setting and living life through one’s passions. Though I feel I have made tremendous strides, I have never stopped learning. I have never peaked. Once I conquer what I set out to do, I always find ways to keep climbing. I do that through Invest Learn Teach. I invest in myself, I take action with what I learn and I recycle that knowledge and skill into coaching others to do the same.

passionate about something, you should surround yourself with it until it becomes routine. And when that happens, you find something else until you build yourself up to where you want to be. It was my enthusiasm to take on new challenges, educate myself and assume risk that lead to building a real estate portfolio worth more than $30 million. In the past three years alone, I have helped people raise more than $4 million, which led to the purchase of 250 properties worth more than $20 million. And because of that, others have been able to share in our success by investing not only in our real estate, but in the value of my education. That is the perfect example of why Ray’s method works. By investing in myself, I have been able to take action and succeed. That success has made it entirely possible for me to train others on how to, as Ray would say, crush it and dominate in their respective field.

I have found achievement by committing myself to building multiple income streams. I believe when you are

The hybrid polymer coating comes in a variety of colours with the strength to protect garage concrete surfaces from harsh chemicals and salts. Automotive enthusiasts can create a tailored look for their show space with cabinets in high gloss red, carbon fibre black or maple. “More people are looking for garage storage solutions. It’s typically the largest space in most homes and needs to serve a lot of functions,” says Boyd. Offering options at various price points, Tailored Living can create a custom look in any space.

Tailored Living’s whole-home approach to maximizing space ensures clients get the most out of their home. No project is too big or small for the Trusted Regina endorsed company. “We have solutions for your closets, media rooms, pantry, home office and even offer murphy beds. It’s important to us to help our clients get control of their spaces and improve the way they live in their homes,” says Sharlene. After a complimentary consultation, measurements are taken and clients are presented with a rendering of what their space could look like using a state-of-the-art 3-D design software program.

After developing a strong work ethic on the ice, Boyd has transferred his intensity to his everyday life with custom home and garage solutions. Whether Boyd and Sharlene are working with clients or helping build a better community through their charity work, they truly value creating a relationship with the people they work with. “Every client’s needs and space are unique and we work hard to achieve the client’s vision for the space. We want you to enjoy coming home to a beautifully organized and designed space,” says Sharlene. “When you allow us to come into your home, it is a big deal and we appreciate and respect your time and your home.”

Have you heard about

Sun Country Hearing Ltd.?

“I had trouble with pain and hearing loss mostly in my left ear. I saw my doctor and he told me to use softener in hopes it would break up. He wouldn’t irrigate due to the fact that I had pain and he was unsure if my ear drum was damaged. I made an appointment with Jacquie who was willing to book me in after hours to accommodate my work schedule. She took one look in my ears and knew what to do. She quickly removed the wax in both my ears and it gave me instant relief. She also advised me on what do do to prevent further trouble. Thanks, Jacquie.” Perry, Estevan, SK “I recently purchased Phonak hearing aids from Sun Country Hearing. I found the professional assistance from Jacquie, a qualified audiologist, was exceptional, from the initial evaluation to several ongoing assessments. Jacquie listens to my concerns and provides information at my level of understanding. As well, I am very pleased to receive this service in my home community. I would highly recommend Sun Country Hearing for anyone needing help to manage hearing loss or other hearing problems.” Margaret, Estevan, SK

THE FUTURE

HAS ARRIVED By Tobie Hainstock

“R

oads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads!” At the time, the words of Dr. Emmet Brown seemed like a fantasy as the DeLorean flew off to the futuristic year of 2015. The idea of a flying car has been around since the invention of the automobile, but now that dream has become a reality. Slovakian company AeroMobil recently launched the prototype for the first flying Roadster. Designed by AeroMobil cofounder and chief designer Stefan Klein, this thrilling machine transforms easily from automobile to plane in a matter of just seconds. The AeroMobil 3.0, which was recently launched, has been actively participating in a regular flighttesting program since October 2014. As a car, the AeroMobil acts like any other you may operate. It uses gasoline for fuel, fits into any standard parking space and can travel on any highway or road. As a plane, it’s at home in any airport. One notable characteristic: the AeroMobil is able to take off and land on any strip that is just a few hundred metres in length. The body shell, wings and wheels of the AeroMobil are built from advanced composite material. This current prototype includes many of the features that will be built into the final

72

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

version of the automobile/airplane. These features include avionics equipment, autopilot and an advanced parachute deployment system. The AeroMobil also executes several other highly advanced technologies, which include a sturdy suspension system that allows the vehicle to take off and land even on terrain that can be very rough. The AeroMobil 3.0 uses a Rotax 912, which is a four-cylinder engine that features two carburetors, electric start, a four stroke liquid/ air-cooled engine with opposed cylinders, a dual-electronic ignition, mechanical fuel pump, propeller speed reduction unit and an air intake system. Presently, the Rotax 912 is the bestselling, four-stroke engine on the market. This engine has more power and is able to keep its weight light for flying — making it the best power to weight ratio in its class. Time between overhauls for the Rotax 912 series engine is an impressive 2,000 hours. After decades of research and development, the flying car has finally arrived. Nobody knows for sure what kinds of adjustments this will cause for the environment, air traffic control and other unforeseen issues, but now that Pandora’s Box has been opened, there’s no going back.

OIL & GAS

UPDATE: KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE By Business & Industry Staff

76

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

OIL & GAS

T

he proposed Keystone XL pipeline is an approximately 1,200 mile long 36-inch pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta to Steele City, Nebraska, via Baker, Montana. The Keystone pipeline already exists, and the XL is a new project. According to the proponent, TransCanada, the pipeline would take two years to construct once approval is received, and would provide 13,000 construction jobs. Of the 1,200 miles, 329 miles is in Canada, from Hardisty to Monchy, Saskatchewan. The pipeline’s capacity will be 830,000 barrels per day. Trans-Canada suggests the new project will augment current pipeline infrastructure, and also support new production in the Bakken region, while

also improving access for Canadian and American producers. There are many pipelines running across Canada and the United States. Some statistics suggest there are more than 2.5 million miles of gas, oil and other pipelines in the U.S. In Canada, we transport in excess of 3.3 million barrels per day over 22,000 miles of pipeline. With rail transport of oil currently exceeding 200,000 barrels a day, and carried by seemingly endless trains winding across Canada, the future of the Keystone seems to be more important, given the view pipelines are safer than transporting oil by rail. On February 25, President Barack Obama vetoed the bill that would have given approval for construction of the Keystone

XL pipeline. It was only the third veto of his presidency, but it was a direct challenge to the Republican majority in both the House and the Senate. How did this pipeline project become so political, even when it has limited environmental impact and limited economic impact over the long term? First, the pipeline will service oil from the Athabasca Tar Sands deposit in Alberta, which many environmentalists have targeted, suggesting it is “dirty” and has too great a carbon footprint to extract without grave environmental consequences. Secondly, because the project is international in that it crosses the Canadian border into the United States and requires presidential approval, it was a possible target for political action, even if the pipeline itself was only a symbol of the larger climate change struggle. Michael Levi, senior fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, suggests Keystone is a small player that has had a big effect, despite its size. “Things like the falling price of oil will have a larger influence on whether the tar sands get mined than whether the Keystone XL gets built.” The Republican Speaker of the House, John Boehner, said after the veto that the issue is far from dead. The Republicans could take the Bill up again, but would need a twothirds majority to override the President’s veto, and it is unlikely to find that. That said, the project is not dead. Until the State Department presents the President — or the next President — with a final report on Keystone XL, there will be no movement. President Obama still says he is not against the project, but is against the House and Senate trying to override what he considers to be the traditional approval process. As this stalemate continues, rail traffic increases. Gary Doer, Canada’s current ambassador to the United States, says during the period Keystone has been delayed, rail traffic carrying oil from Canada to the U.S. has increased tenfold. Experts suggest rail traffic is safe 99 per cent of the time, but the few derailments that do occur are often catastrophic. The political calculus is difficult, but politics is always about choices. n June 3 and 4, Weyburn was once again the site of the Saskatchewan Oil & Gas Show. This event, which has been held once every two years since 1985, was a huge success thanks to the continuing support of the local community. The show, endorsed by the Petroleum Services Association of Canada

(PSAC), provides an opportunity for the service and supply segment of the industry to show and display their wares and latest technology applicable to the oil and gas industry. It is a chance for attendees to network with others from across the province, country and world (this year, people came from as far away as China and Europe).

Earlier in the year, there was some concern over whether the economic downturn would affect the show. However, support was strong. There was a full schedule of events with all the suppers and luncheons being sold out, and exhibitor space sold out quickly. In all, more than 5,000 people attended and $1 billion of equipment was on display at the Weyburn Exhibition Grounds.

Putting on such a large event requires the assistance of many individuals and organizations. Tanya Hulbert, show manager, states: “The Saskatchewan Oil & Gas Show would not be the success it is without the support of our community. We are fortunate many local businesses, service clubs and organizations assist with the show. The Weyburn Kinsmen Club drove the shuttle vans supplied by Barber Motors. New Age Motorsports donated grounds transportation. The Weyburn Roller Derby Association, Colour My World Child Care, the Weyburn Redwings and the Weyburn Youngfellows did catering. The Weyburn Comprehensive STARS Choir provided entertainment. The Weyburn Curling Club ran our Social Centre. Hallberg

Rentals donated onsite washrooms. Goliath Disposal provided refuse and recycle bins. The Silver Seals did grounds clean up. The Weyburn Oilshow Board thanks the City of Weyburn and the Weyburn Ag Society for all that they do to keep the grounds and facilities in top shape. We have received many comments from exhibitors and attendees about what a beautiful city we have and how welcomed they feel. At the end of the show, we, as a board, are most proud of how the community comes together to host such a wonderful event.” Chairman Del Mondor noted the 2015 show saw a tremendous amount of support from the Government of Saskatchewan and the City of Weyburn.

In attendance were Premier Brad Wall, Deputy Premier Don McMorris, Minister of the Economy Bill Boyd, Minister of Finance Kevin Doherty, Minister of Health and Weyburn-Big Muddy MLA Dustin Duncan and Weyburn Mayor Debra Button. This shows just how important the oil and gas industry is to the province. Each year, the proceeds of the Oil & Gas Show are invested back into the city, benefiting all of its residents. Over the years, this has included funding for improvements to the exhibition grounds, sports arena and golf course. In May, a 3,000-gallon fuel card lock system was purchased and installed at the airport enabling the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS) Ambulance to refuel there. In short, the Saskatchewan Oil & Gas Show held in Weyburn is an event put on by the community for the community. Congratulations on another successful year!
