GUCCI’S

HORSEBIT MOTIF By FL Staff

T

here is much discussion over which Gucci developed the horsebit motif for the brand in 1953. Some attribute it to the founder himself, Guccio Gucci. Others attribute it to Guccio’s eldest son, Aldo Gucci, who was instrumental in expanding the family empire when he established offices in New York City — thus introducing the brand to an array of film stars and jet setters.

motif was honoured in the Horsebit Marina Chain Collection, which brings together two symbolic Gucci icons: the unique Marina Chain motif and the highly iconic horsebit element. It’s no surprise the horsebit motif continues to epitomize a timeless elegance for the brand and its products.

Regardless of the creator, the horsebit motif, an iconic fashion symbol, has endured popularity for more than 60 years. Debuted in 1953, the horsebit motif has transcended a variety of Gucci’s greatest creations and evolved into a bold piece of hardware seen on handbags and shoes. It’s also been enlarged, minimized, embossed, printed and branded onto canvas handbags, silks and watches as well as fine jewelry. Most recently, the

Gucci’s creative director Frida Giannini says it perfectly, “The horsebit loafer has lived many lives since its creation 60 years ago, earning itself an important place as a wardrobe staple for both men and women alike. The double-ring and bar motif taken from equestrian hardware remains an icon, linking Gucci’s unique history with its modern day attitude.”

hough summer is a busy time of year, full of activities, events and days spent in the sun for everyone, it’s even more so for children.

From playdates in the park to adventures at the beach, from family barbeques to summer weddings, there’s no doubt kids are as on-the-go as we are. And for each activity, outing or excursion, outfitting your children can be one more thing to do… that is, until you discover Blu Kangaroo. Recently relocated to better serve their clients big and small, Blu Kangaroo Children’s Boutique offers quality clothing for babies and children that are as fun and unique as each child that comes through their doors. As a mom herself, owner and operator Trina Gould knows how difficult it can be to find fun, fashion-forward clothing for little ones — a need that grows as your child does. “I definitely like different clothing for children. Not crazy-different but when I am shopping for my son, I want a unique pair of jeans or a shirt that is not run-ofthe mill — something trendy and really good quality too,” says Gould of shopping for her nine-year-old. “My son likes a lot of sportswear too, and you can’t always find those items without going to a number of different stores.” With items at every price point, Blu Kangaroo offers a large selection of children’s wear, ranging in size from infant to young teens. From formal wear to school clothes and everything in between, there isn’t a lot Blu Kangaroo can’t help you find. Gould points out she is happy to

Silver Jeans, Tumble N Dry, Desigual, Guess and Tea Collection are just some of the brands Gould stocks, along with a large array of other tried and trusted brands. In footwear, favourites such as Bogs, Emu and Toms are in hot demand. From satisfying a choosy parent conscious of the elements to ensuring your child will actually like to wear the items you purchase, finding clothing for children that is on-trend, high-quality and reflective of your child’s personality is no longer a difficult task. With a huge selection for all of your children’s wear needs from formal and fancy to fun and funky, hop in to Blu Kangaroo Children’s Boutique today. “We’ve got some really great name brands, but it isn’t just about trendy, name-brand clothing,” says Gould. “I like things that are quality-made, will last long and wear well, but are also attractive, fun and different!” Blu Kangaroo Children’s Boutique #100, 1 Hawethorne gate Spruce grove 780.960.5088 blukangaroo1@gmail.com /Blu-Kangaroo-Childrens-Boutique

Boyne says many women worry about trying a new look or style. “They wonder what people will think,” she says. “But they’ll think you look good! I love working with women and helping them feel good about themselves. It’s nice to see them carry themselves with confidence in a new outfit.” The Pink Paire offers a wide selection of casual and dress clothes for women, as well as one-of-a-kind accessories like belts, bags, scarves and jewelry. Boyne chooses all her own merchandise according to quality, fabric, and cut. “I order pieces based on how they feel on your skin,” she says. “And you won’t see these items just anywhere. I take only one size run because every woman wants to feel unique and different. Once your size is gone, that’s it for that item.” New arrivals come into the store weekly. When she makes an order, Boyne has many loyal customers in mind. “I don’t just order what I like,” she says. “I order things I know my customers will like, and things I know will look good on them.” Getting to know her customers and developing friendships with them are very important to Boyne. “My customers often tell me their stories and I really get a feel for what they want,” she says. “The Pink Paire has also been a great retreat for me over the years as I’m the only woman at home — even our dog is male. My customers play a big role in my life as this is my social time, too.” The Pink Paire has been operating in Spruce Grove since 2007 and has just moved to its brand new location in the Hawthorne Centre, past the Tri-Leisure. HEALTH & WELLNESS

Y

oga is definitely top of mind in the world of fitness these days as a way to work out the kinks of every day life. More than the physical applications of the practice, yoga is a way of life. Although it is not known exactly when yoga first began, we do know it originated in India more than 5000 years ago. For many, yoga is a way to relieve stress and restore balance, but true yogis practice for reasons both on and off the mat. In fact, it is proven that yoga teaches its students to take slower, deeper breaths — a life strategy for remaining calm and staying ‘in the moment.’ Moreover, yoga increases a person’s ability to be in tune with his or her body, heart and environment. Yogis believe in taking care of their physical and mental selves, but also in taking care of the world in which they live. It is a language of respect that has beautiful benefits. “The success of yoga does not lie in the ability to perform postures but in how it positively changes the way we live our life and our relationships.” T.K.V. Desikachar

The Studio If you are new to the practice, there are many different facilities in which to try out a class. From civic offering to hot studios, earthy independents and posh places, yoga is affordable and accessible in a gamut of ways. In fact, for those less brave, yoga DVDs or online videos are a comfortable approach to doing downward dog in you living room.

The Class Types Of course, there are many types of classes growing constantly with popularity and creativity. Yoga has been blended with Pilates, ballet and even resistance training involving weights. To keep traditional yogis from running for the hills, here is a look at some of the more popular types of convention yoga.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Ashtanga and Power Yoga This type of practice focuses on six established and strenuous pose sequences. Not recommended for beginners, this yoga is for those seeking a challenge.

Bikram Practiced in a very hot room — nearly 105 degrees with 40 per cent humidity — Bikram is named after inventor Bikram Choudhury. Each class is a series of 26 basic yoga postures, each performed twice.

Hatha A perfect entrance into yoga, Hatha is one of six original branches of yoga. Hatha encompasses nearly all varieties of modern yoga and is flow free, meaning a slower, gentler class.

Kundalini An invigorating series of poses meant to fire up the body and strengthen the mind, Kundalini yoga is an awakening practice meant to draw out your inner warrior.

Iyengar Named after purist yogi B.K.S. Iyengar, this style of yoga is ideal for the injuryprone, as it incorporates props such as blocks, straps, harnesses and incline boards to help students ease into poses.

Yin Yoga The perfect way to finish off a long day at the office, a stressful project or a week spent editing a beautiful magazine, Yin is a quiet, meditative yoga practice also called taoist yoga.

The Purpose Whatever your reason, yoga is a vehicle to better health, spiritual satisfaction and a long pause in shavasan. Yoga is very accepting and non-judgmental; it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. So put on some comfy clothes, grab your mat and lean into wellness, one stretch at a time.

any times people are left feeling frustrated by health problems, uncertain how to help themselves. Many remedies are in fact Band-Aid solutions and don’t actually deal with the origin of the problem. Healthworks Nutrition Centre takes a whole body approach to wellness, not just by treating the symptoms, but also by looking for the reasons the symptoms exist. Nothing is more important than a person’s health, whether physical or emotional. “We believe very strongly in natural health and provide a service based in science,” says owner Erin

This unique blend of service and product allows the company to offer professional grade solutions to clients. Services range from live cell analysis and pH testing to reflexology and colon hydrotherapy. Healthworks treats clients at all stages of life from birth through their senior years. such as acupuncture, assessments and testing. McNiven is also a spokesperson for Lorna Vanderhaeghe, a product line that empowers women to take control of their health. “What you eat, what you think and what you drink influences the cells of your body,” says Grant Derkatz, co-owner and clinical director, “The healthier your cells are, the healthier your body is.” Grant offers clients an inside look at their bodies through live cell analysis. Using a microscope to view a client’s blood sample, the results present a visual depiction of their health, used to help with lifestyle changes.

New this year is a signature weight loss program called The Best You. Each client receives a customized program, including a diet/menu plan, tailored to their individual goals and body’s needs. With an on-staff holistic nutritionist, clients get the guidance and support they need to thrive. “Nutrition is one of the basic things people miss in their day to day living. Many times they receive prescriptions to treat symptoms but fail to address the underlying issues. Here we treat clients from the inside out,” says Erin. Regardless of resolutions or illnesses, most people have remarkably similar goals — to feel better, healthier and stronger. Holistic medicine is the key to helping a body’s systems function optimally. “The human body is an interconnected system such that you can’t really treat just one part of, which is why holistic

treatment is so important. We look at the blockages and interferences in the body and once we get rid of them, the body begins to heal itself,” says Grant. Whether clients are looking for menopausal treatments, digestive issues or just want to stay on top of their health, they can find the support they need at Healthworks. “It’s really exciting to see people change their diet, lifestyle and thought patterns. They become less stressed, have more energy and overall become healthier,” says Grant, “We truly care about each client and are here to help them achieve their health goals.” Healthworks Nutrition Centre 164, 2693 Broadmoor Blvd Sherwood Park 780.417.1799 www.healthworksnutrition.ca Follow us on

The event surpassed expectations by raising a gross amount of $1.28 million and clearing approximately $700,000 for Alzheimer’s research. “It was another great event and we want to give a huge thank you to our committee, volunteers, team captains and players. None of this would have been possible without them,” expresses Jessica Twidale of Alzheimer Society Alberta and Northwest Territories.

The event was such a resounding success; new and exciting plans for next year’s tournament are already underway. The 2016 Alzheimer’s Face Off will be held April 29 to May 1 at the Westin Hotel and the Terwillegar Recreation Centre in Edmonton. Finding Cause and Treatment for Chronic Headaches

By Lisa Clements, ND Vital Health Naturopathic Clinic #136 – 2755 Broadmoor Blvd. Sherwood Park 780.449.4047 www.vitalhealthclinic.ca

M

ost of us have experienced headaches at one point in our lives and can relate to the pain and discomfort they cause. Headache symptoms vary greatly by individual. For example, migraine headaches are often completely debilitating, whereas other headaches are less intense but might occur daily. As a naturopathic doctor, I am interested in determining the cause of your headaches, so instead of simply managing the symptoms, you can prevent them altogether. Listed below are some common causes of headaches. Other potential serious causes exist, therefore it’s advisable to see a medical professional to have a full assessment.

24

FineLifestyles

EDMONTON

Histamine Headaches are sometimes caused by constriction or dilation of blood vessels in the head, altering blood flow and creating a throbbing or pressure kind of pain. Excess histamine in the body can bind to the blood vessels, causing these changes. Determining the cause of excess histamine and what will break it down is important for relieving histamine-related headaches. Oxalates Oxalates are created in the body as a normal part of metabolism. They are a waste acid that should be easily eliminated but, if not, can accumulate and cause headaches. Since the accumulated oxalates form crystals, they often cause sharp, stabbing pain or pressure. Helping your body to eliminate these crystals can be an important step in preventing headaches. HOrmOnal Many women experience headaches in conjunction with their menstrual cycles. These headaches are a result of the shift in hormones, estrogen in particular, during the cycle. The birth control pill and hormone replacement therapy can also trigger headaches or migraines. Supporting the liver to properly metabolize these hormones will balance the ratios between estrogen and progesterone, as well as the different forms of estrogens, helping reduce hormonally related headaches. magnesium Deficiency Magnesium is a mineral that acts as a natural muscle relaxant in the body and

HEALTH & WELLNESS

is used in large amounts during times of stress to help the body accommodate for the stress response. Among other things, it helps regulate blood pressure, manage blood sugars and settle anxiety. If deficient, magnesium supplementation can improve headaches by relaxing the blood vessels, which regulate blood flow in the head and by relaxing the muscles of the neck, jaw and shoulders. fOOD intOlerances Food intolerances or sensitivities are unlike allergies in that they are caused by a different type of immune response. For example, food allergy tests look for IgE responses in the body, whereas food sensitivity tests look for the IgG response. These immune complexes travel throughout the body and create inflammation that can play a major role in many different conditions, including headaches. Common food sensitivities include wheat, dairy, corn, soy, eggs and sugar. Chemical additives, preservatives and food dyes can also contribute to headaches. Eliminating and reintroducing foods from your diet can help you determine which, if any, foods you may be sensitive to or you can have a blood test done. Whether debilitating or not, experiencing headaches on a regular basis is not normal. Seeing a naturopathic doctor can help you determine the cause of your headaches and can help restore the balance in your body to prevent them from returning.

THE WORLD OF

FINE CIGARS By Brandi Parnell

“If I cannot smoke cigars in heaven, I shall not go!” —Mark Twain

At the request of his wife, Mark Twain gave up cigars, leading to a long bout of writer’s block. He then resumed smoking his normal 300 cigars a month and wrote a book in three months without bother or difficulty.

D

espite the known health risks associated with smoking, cigars remain a luxury item enjoyed for a variety of reasons. Like expensive vintages of champagne, cigars often mark celebratory occasions. Fine wine, the rarest gemstones, luxury automobiles and cigars suggest cachÊ. They are yardsticks in social circles, often evoking an air of wealth and power alongside a supple leather chair, life aboard a yacht or membership in a private club. And while tobacco aficionados can spend upwards of $50 per cigar, the most expensive on the market comes with a $1,150 price tag — the Gurkha Black Dragon. Gurkha is known to be one of the most famous brands of luxury cigars in the world, enjoyed by celebrities, leading government officials and royalty. Their creative packaging has included handcarved bone chests and their products can be purchased exclusively at selected cigar shops worldwide. So what constitutes a great cigar? PROCESSING A great deal of time and skill go into making each one. A cigar can take up to three years from the time a tobacco seed is planted until a cigar is rolled. Like anything coveted, a great smoke appears expensive from the packaging to the wrapper. NURTURING Careful and constant monitoring is required to assess, grade and sort tobacco based on its colour, size and burning characteristics. When it comes to the tobacco wrapper, less than 10 per cent are flawless enough for use. BLENDNG Tobacco can be blended to create interesting flavour combinations. Like the finer things in life, tobacco improves with age, obtaining additional depth and complexity of flavour.

With carefully grown, assessed and selected tobacco, a “torcedore” or master cigar-maker constructs the innards of a cigar, keeping in mind proper construction leads to proper burning. Too much tobacco can restrict airflow, while not enough can lead to a harsh burnt rather than artful taste. In fact, cigar tasting draws many parallels with wine, tea, coffee; variation in climate or soil can affect tobacco, too. Like wine, tea and coffee, tobacco flavours can range from spicy to sweet, peppery to earthy, woody to nutty, fruity to chocolatey and more. Cigar flavour is all personal preference, often enhanced with a beverage. For tracking personal preference, a cigar journal can come in handy; so, too, can a cigar tracking app. If travel is in your future, stop in and tour a factory to truly appreciate the world of “stogies.” Some countries famous for their cigars are Brazil, Cameroon, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Indonesia, Mexico, Nicaragua,

Philippines, and the United States. Like any indulgence, moderation is key. But should the moment strike, should you wish to celebrate an occasion or if the good things in life are your pastime, sit back, pour yourself a scotch and savour a fine cigar.

Anatomy of a Cigar The head: The end you put in your mouth, sealed off and requires a cutting; a guillotine is preferrable. The foot: The side that

you light.

The filler: A nice, consistent

blend of dried and fermented tobacco.

The wrapper: The outside of the cigar. It varies in colour from light to dark. A lot of the cigar’s flavor comes from this outer layer.

here is often confusion regarding what constitutes a malt whisky. Whether you are discussing single, blended or 100% blended malts — also known as vatted whisky — there are differences. Many people are familiar with popular blends such as Johnnie Walker Red and Black Label. Often people recognize single malts such as Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. But not as many are familiar with 100% blended malts such as Compass Box or Johnnie Walker Green Label, the only non-blend Johnnie Walker.

Understanding the type of grain used in distilling and the distillation technique itself are fundamental to identifying each of the whisky categories. Single malt whisky distillation uses three ingredients: malted barley — partially germinated barley containing high amounts maltose sugars — water and yeast. When combined they create a weak form of beer called wort, which is fermented in giant tubs called washbacks. Once fermentation begins to slow, after about three days, the wort is pumped into pot-shaped copper stills and brought to a boil. The fumes rise and come into contact with copper-plated chimneys that cool it back into a liquid and remove harmful chemical compounds known as esters. The output is recirculated into the pot stills for a second, and sometimes third time to increase the alcohol content and remove all impurities. The spirit is then transferred into oak barrels to age for a minimum of three years. Once the master blender determines the whisky has reached peak maturity, several casks are married to obtain the flavour profile he or she desires. Single malt does not mean single cask, which must be specified. Rather, single malt means the whisky originates from a single source or “distillery”.

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

Blended whisky originated with Andrew Usher who took young, rough, malted pot-still whisky and blended it with other grain alcohols that were produced at his family-owned, “continuous-still” distillery in Edinburgh. Continuous or column stills offered a lighter, more elegant spirit than pot stills, but sacrifice flavour and complexity. Blending the two styles together resulted in a lighter, elegant, reasonably complex spirit with a very short aging period. Grain alcohols derived from rye, corn and wheat are all used in varying degrees to achieve desired flavour profiles. To this day, more than 90% of Scottish distilleries’ output is sent to blenders at exactly three years of age. This affords distilleries to maintain a healthy cash flow. 100% Blended Malts are a hybrid of the two styles. Only malted barley spirits from pot stills are used, but they originate from two or more separate distilleries. For example, the previously mentioned Johnnie Walker Green Label marries single malts from the following distilleries: Talisker, Linkwood, Cragganmore and Caol Ila. No other grain spirit is used. Further, they put an age statement of 15 years on Johnnie Walker Green Label, meaning the youngest whisky used has been aged in oak barrels for 15 years. No matter which style you prefer, please enjoy responsibly. Slante.

The Right Approach to Financial Planning Photos KTB Photography

here seems to be an endless supply of advice on personal finance and investing today in news articles, television and social media. Moreover, many people also struggle with the emotional side of investing. News stories play on this emotion with sensational headlines meant to disturb you enough to read the article. This leaves many people feeling confused and unsure of what they need to do, which often results in irrational decisions. Most people hope they’re on the right track when it comes to minimizing tax, protecting their incomes and growing their assets without risk. But with all this confusing information, how do you know where to start? Charter Wealth Management is an independent financial advisory firm that offers comprehensive financial advice to help you manage the wealth you have worked hard to accumulate. “It’s about understanding,” comments Gordon Malic, certified financial planner and founder of Charter Wealth Management. “When you know what’s really important to someone, you can offer advice and make suggestions that get to the heart of what really matters. And when you know what really matters to your client, you can provide personalized advice at a much higher level.” A DisciplineD ApproAch to FinAnciAl plAnning Gordon’s long-time associate Dave Faulkner, a senior financial planner, points out that financial planning is not just a document you prepare once for a client. It is a living document in a constant state of change. What is important to you today may not be important to you tomorrow. A financial plan needs to be flexible; it needs to provide you with a way to keep track of all the decisions you make concerning your financial

life. A financial plan should also be organized in a way that allows your lawyer and accountant to work with your financial advisor to accomplish your goals. This is why Charter Wealth Management provides each of their clients with a personalized Financial Minute Book™. “Our clients appreciate the simple design and elegant look of the Financial Minute Book,” says Gordon. “We take a lot of pride in being the first wealth management firm to offer this type of approach to financial planning. Organizing and documenting every aspect of the financial advice we provide offers a level of transparency our clients love.” A teAm ApproAch to WeAlth mAnAgement At Charter Wealth Management you have access to over 100 years of financial planning and wealth management experience at your disposal. In addition to the relationship with your primary advisor, you will also benefit from the experience of the entire team. Each team member is highly qualified and specializes in various aspects of financial advice. One area of specialization involves the complex tax issues faced by many selfemployed and small business owners. Charter Wealth Management’s approach to tax, as Gordon puts it, can best be summed up by this quote from Albert Einstein: “You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.” This is one reason that Charter Wealth Management is referred to as “the company to call to save tax.” Charter Wealth Management Suite 301, 28 Mission Avenue St. Albert 780.945.1010 www.charterwealth.com

It was of key importance to the couple, whatever direction they branched out, that they contributed to the growth of not only their family but the community of St. Albert. From the basement office of their first St. Albert home, their daughters Michelle and Kristin were involved in Sarasota Homes from painting decks to cleaning houses. In fact, it was a family decision to land on the name Sarasota while vacationing in sunny Florida. The girls grew up around a family dinner table set with strong morals and sound business sense.

As Gary and Janet hand over more of the corporate responsibilities to their children, they are cognizant to also pass on their combined 40 years respectively of business experience. “Many people believe business is all about dollars and cents,” says Gary. “But business is actually about people — good people are the key to our successes.” He goes on, “Business is actually quite simple. Thinking larger than his own family unit and being a key supporter to the growth of their city, Sarasota Homes was an original contributor to a soccer field house at the Servus Credit Union Place. Because of their commitment to local charities and services, life has reciprocated. The tradespeople who started with their first homes are now an integral part of where their business is headed. The 3 DIvISIONS OF SArASOTA After 12 years in operation, in 2008, Sarasota had established a strong enough position in the marketplace that the Acheson family was able to build their head office. When you walk into their office you see the workmanship that goes into each home, which gives clients the confidence, and trust they need to have in the Sarasota Company. SA r AS OTA NeW hOme CONSTrUCTION Building with Sarasota means each client tells a story and their home is the setting. “It is critical for us to listen to our clients’ needs before we design their home, to know what is functional in their existing home, what they love and what they long for,” says Michelle. Technology is critical to all aspects of their business and they are mindful about being a green builder. A paper-free office, they use a specialized 3D program that gives clients the ability to envision every single detail as they map out their new home from light socket to linen closet, alcove to master bedroom. In doing so, they too share their client’s vision. Whether it is a starter home or a multimillion-dollar dream home, the same care and quantifying of needs is a standard process. At Sarasota they build every home as if it were their own. More

“We’re excited about the future. Multifamily sites are now more available for young people just starting out or for those looking to downsize, giving St. Albert more choice when it comes to affordable projects,” says Gary. SArASOTA LAND DeveLOpmeNT Each new home build is a springboard for better innovation and growth. In the Sarasota Land Development division of the business lead by Michelle and her husband Rory Fogolin, they are visionaries, seeking optimal land space with a creative lens for maximum living. Both commerce graduates, if they cannot find a home that meets all needs, they will take a piece of land and develop it for a specific project. As such, they offer inventive land sizes, unique house placement and community specific outcomes. Michelle generates excitement one project at a time, intuitively understanding her client’s design desires and conceptualizing plans from visions. A new concept to St. Albert, six years ago, Sarasota began developing themed communities that offer housing options ranging from affordable to elaborate. Focused on building innovative neighbourhoods and constantly in sync with what people need, Sarasota Homes wanted to build neighbourhoods with 30 to 35 homes; in each instance and thanks in part to their relationships with Melcor Developments and Genstar Land Developers, Sarasota offers families a range of living choices. hether you are purchasing a new property, thinking about a major renovation or simply refinancing to take advantage of historic low interest rates, it pays to make an informed decision. Licensed mortgage broker Kim Lindsay will find the right mortgage for you. One of the main benefits of using a mortgage broker is they have access to, and knowledge of, the entire mortgage market. “Your bank is limited to their own products, and while many consumers feel they are getting advice from their banks, honest advice can really only come from someone who offers choice,” says Lindsay who researches appropriate lenders and offers clients their best options. The mortgage market is constantly evolving and there are countless financial institutions, lenders, mortgage rates, terms and conditions available, which is why having an independent and unbiased specialist working on your behalf is vital. “I always give my clients options,” says Lindsay. “They can make an informed decision and get the best mortgage tailored to their specific homeownership goals.” Each mortgage is customized to each client and Lindsay’s service doesn’t end after a deal closes. She offers ongoing mortgage management and annual reviews to her clients. If you’re considering a new home, vacation home, investment property or a condo for your university bound student, Lindsay will meet with you to discuss all your options and help you weigh the costs and benefits of each transaction. Her personal service includes a complete review of your finances, and a discussion regarding your risk tolerance as well as immediate and future goals and plans. “It’s the most efficient way to get the best-priced and best-structured mortgage,” she says. “Bottom line.” Today, both government and banks are constantly changing mortgage-lending guidelines. Lindsay keeps on top of the market and knows which lenders are better suited to specific clients. Homeowners Tom and Tara were thrilled to receive approval on their mortgage with a phenomenal rate within 24 hours. “We found Kim to be very professional, fast and efficient,” says Tara. “We had never

used a broker before but now we strongly recommend it to everyone. There were no complications and Kim knew what to do for us before we needed to ask.” Being in the business for the last eight years means Lindsay has helped many repeat clients who’ve bought and sold, refinanced and taken on additional properties. One of the reasons she’s been so successful is because of the relationships she built through her ongoing consultations and service. Another is because of her association with TMG - The Mortgage Group. “Our team of mortgage brokers are among the best in the industry. We have excellent and established relationships with our lending partners, including

Every month, 4Cats offers a different artist focus class where students learn about a well-known artist through pictures, stories and art projects inspired by the artist’s work. The mixed media classes incorporate a wide variety of techniques and media, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, stenciling, stamping, foiling and crafting with clay and polymer. Themed workshops are also offered and are announced weekly on the 4Cats Facebook page. Are you looking for a fun, relaxed environment where your child can learn

Art: there is no better way to spend the day! 4Cats Arts Studio also has classes, workshops and parties specifically geared toward adults who wish to pursue their love of art. Adults and children alike enjoy the 4Cats themed parties, where friends come together for an exciting afternoon or evening of exploring and experimenting with art. “Everybody has a little artist inside them. Maria and her 4Cats staff have created an amazing and special place for those artists to come out and create,” says Charmaine Dy. Explore the magic and mystery of art at 4Cats Arts Studio today!

The fresh patterned leggings from SweetLegs are available in two sizes: regular and plus. The comfortable leggings are so soft some say they feel like clouds on your legs. The fit is fantastic and they never get baggy. They also don’t slip or become sheer when you bend over.

“We are interested in offering comfortable sizing and fit for all women,” says Laura. Seeing her customers’ faces light up when they come out of the change room is the most fulfilling part of her job. “I love spreading happiness and encouraging a positive body image,” she says. “It’s

Grace and Lace, as seen on the TV show Shark Tank, is a feminine brand offering flowy, lacy styling that pairs well with nearly everything in the store. Honeybea Design Hive offers bum warmers made from upcycled sweaters by a Toronto designer. “We like to support local and Canadian designers. We especially love to offer unique products,” says Laura. For the final touches for any outfit, Sweet Boutique carries jewelry and accessories from lines like such as Edmonton’s very own eLiasz and eLLa and Vancouver’s Lover’s Tempo.

Sweet Boutique opened six months ago in a small plaza in St. Albert just off Anthony Henday. The bright new location is convenient to access and offers excellent parking. Setting up shop was an exciting move for Laura and her staff. After caring for children at home for 15 years, the mother of five asked the founder of SweetLegs about doing home parties. She then created the home party position that more than 120 women across Canada now hold. When her business took off, the city informed her she could no longer sell clothes out of her home. She had to open a store. “It really shows there was a need for this kind of store in St. Albert,” says Laura. “Our boutique gives a high-end feel without high-end prices. It’s a place that makes every woman feel comfortable and better about herself.” For the littlest customers, the boutique’s play area is the greatest attraction. Customer Jessica Penner says on her recent visit her two-and-a-half year old daughter didn’t want to leave Sweet Boutique. “She wanted to keep ‘cooking’ me things in the play kitchen,” says Jessica. “She adores going to the shop which makes the shopping experience so much more relaxing!”

ord travels fast when the food is good; that’s what has happened in Edmonton. The city’s Careit Urban Deli, opened by chefs Cameron Jordan and Louis Hamel in January 2008, received an overwhelmingly positive response from customers for its convenient and healthy meals. They’ve continued to grow the business with a store in Crestwood in 2009 and another in St. Albert in November 2014. “The reception to the Careit Urban Deli has been super positive,” says Jordan. “People from other areas keep asking when we’re going to open up in their neighbourhoods.” Careit Urban Deli is hoping to open a fourth and final location this fall in downtown Edmonton’s Fox Towers.

After Jordan and Hamel graduated from a two-year culinary arts program at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, they each spent more than a decade working for hotels, restaurants and country clubs. They noticed many busy families with working parents and children in extra-curricular activities didn’t have a lot of time for cooking. “We wanted to purchase local meat from Edmonton-area farms and create a deli where people could get high-quality, locally-sourced meals they can buy and take home,” says Jordan. They called it Careit Urban Deli because chefs at all their locations put care into each meal they prepare. Urban Deli refers to the fact they are meeting the needs of modern families in every neighbourhood where they operate. The carrot motif on their signage brings it all together to reflect the freshness of their food.

ST. ALBERT FEATURE

Jordan and Hamel designed a menu for Careit Urban Deli that features delicious sandwiches such as like the Chipotle Chicken and Turkey Cranberry Mayo and favourite soups such as like the comforting Mulligatawny and exotic Butternut Squash Banana. But each Careit Urban Deli has different daily offerings tailored to their neighbourhood’s favourites. The deli uses freshly baked bread from the Portuguese Family Bakery and jams and mustards made by The Jam Lady. They make all their own salad dressings (Greek and Caesar are the most popular), and desserts such as the famous Careit Cookie with oatmeal, carrot and chocolate chips and their fabulously moist banana bread. Customer Myra Masdrilejo says, “I love the soups, especially the beef barley and the salmon chowder. The Vietnamese sandwich is an excellent option. And I

always fall for the banana bread when I grab lunch.” Catering is also available and becoming a growing part of the Careit Urban Deli’s business. Casual meetings of up to 30 people can order soups, salads and sandwiches for their groups to be picked up or delivered. If you’re looking for a quick and easy dinner to take home, they have a wonderful selection of comfort foods such as shepherd’s pie, butter chicken, chicken pot pie, beef stroganoff, turkey chili and other meals you can pop in the oven or microwave that same night. Many are vegetarian and gluten-free, too. Some customers come in five or six days a week for meals or they pick up three or four entrees to keep in the fridge. Nothing is sold frozen at Careit Urban Deli. “Our customers say our meals taste like home cooking,” says Jordan. “And they love it that we get to know them and what they like as well as the fact that we can tell them exactly what is in every dish we cook.” If you’ve finally pulled out the barbecue and are looking for some flavourful cuts of meat, Careit Urban Deli has an amazing selection of local chicken, pork and beef that have been raised with no hormones or antibiotics. Marinated chicken breasts, turkey, beef, chicken burgers, rib-eye, strip loin, sirloin steaks, pork chops and baby back ribs are all popular this time of year. “The quality of these fresh, local cuts set us apart,” says Jordan. “People can taste the difference in the quality of our food and that’s why they come back. There is a difference.” Check out the Careit Urban Deli for your next meal! The beauty of Mirror Image Hair and Body Studio is it combines the expertise of two highly talented stylists with the family bond of identical twin sisters. Tracy Cameron and Treena Chiu have been in business for more than 17 years in an industry they both love.

Close in every way, Cameron explains some of the similarities in their lives. “We live side by side, we love to dress the same and we both have two children who are close in age.” Although Cameron was married six years earlier than Chiu, they share the same wedding date.

Mirror Image Hair and Body Studio is a uniquely designed facility incorporating the rustic feel of the Banff and Canmore areas. The studio is located underground, below one of the sister’s homes and has its own separate entrance for privacy and convenience. “Many people walk in and immediately sense the warmth and cosiness of the studio,” notes Cameron. The 10th season of Income Property is now airing on HGTV Canada. With nearly 150 on-camera renovations under my (tool) belt, I’ve learned my fair share about what it takes to pull off a successful reno.

HOUSE & HOME

PrePare, PrePare, PrePare A detailed renovation plan will help keep you on budget and on time. Set out a specific agreement with your contractor before the work begins. You should be able to see on paper how your renovation is going to play out before it ever begins. Don’t jumP the gun on Purchases Don’t buy materials or appliances until you’ve completely planned out your renovation and all measurements have been taken. Online sales can be tempting, but that great deal on a 24-inch dishwasher isn’t going to save you any money if your entire space has to be redesigned because you only had room for an 18-inch model. Work out your timeline Contractor approximations are simply that, so sitting down and working out a detailed timeline before the reno starts will help keep your contractor on track and yourself on budget. Don’t ignore the issues When you pull down walls or rip up floors, there’s a good chance you’re going to be surprised by something you find, especially in an older home. This might mean an unexpected cost up front, but it will save you tons of money in the long run. Don’t cut corners It’s always better to go the extra mile and do it right the first time. Hiring competent people to do the job, buying quality materials, and taking the time to complete all the necessary steps is key.

communicate With your contractor Constant communication is the best way to ensure everything is going as planned. Decisions that affect design, budget or timeline should ultimately be made by you — an open dialogue will help keep surprises to a minimum. use licenseD traDes Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, asbestos removal, anything to do with gas and anything structural should always be completed by a licensed professional in that specific trade. A jack-of-all-trades type can be helpful for basic renos, but saving money by hiring a plumber who’s also willing to do electrical can be a dangerous idea if they aren’t trained, licensed or insured for that line of work. DeciDe on your Diy I love it when I encounter ambitious homeowners who want to get dirty and take part in their renovation. But projects like cabinet installation, complicated tile work or skilled carpentry exceed the limit of a typical DIY project and can reduce the value of your home if done incorrectly. My advice? Involve yourself heavily in the demo — it’s the funnest part anyway! orget about the rough concrete you see on sidewalks or dingy garage floors. Take a look at the sleek, polished glass fibre reinforced concrete (GFRC) mixed from scratch at Urban Concrete Countertops and Design and open your eyes to the versatility of concrete. The company makes everything from fireplace surrounds and backsplashes to funky tables and feature walls, demonstrating this amazing medium has limitless design capabilities. Their interior and exterior panels, made in four-by-six or four-by-eight sheets are available in seven colours from white to black and everything in between. Best of all, the panels can be used in a wide variety of applications because the concrete comes in profiles as thin

as 3/8 of an inch and weighs less than seven pounds per sq. ft. GFRC is just as strong as poured concrete, so regardless its thickness; strength and durability are never compromised.

The panels can be cut into tiles and easily glued to any surface. They’re used to clad the exterior of homes or create stunning finishes, including feature walls.

The polished panels come in two finishes: a refined, sleek standard finish or the Mountaineer finish, which has more character. Kimberly Fenske, the company’s business development and marketing principal, says, “Both are smooth, but some think the Mountaineer finish looks like it’s been cast in place. However, everything has been cast in our 5,000 sq. ft. studio and showroom here in Edmonton.”

GFRC is also being used to create custom furniture. Dining tables, coffee tables, outdoor patio furniture, sitting blocks and even pieces for landscape design are just the beginning. Pairing GFRC with live edge wood creates stunning pieces. Walnut and pear wood are among favourites to pair with concrete because they have a natural curl that lends character to the piece.

The Dempsey’s Difference Canadian-Made Furniture & Exceptional Service By Courtney Tait Photos KTB Photography

athering around a table to enjoy a meal with family and friends is one of life’s simplest yet most fulfilling traditions. Choosing a dining table that reflects your personal style is essential. It serves not only as a functional piece of furniture, but as a part of the memories you will create throughout your lifetime. Since 1981, Dempsey’s Fine Furnishings has been providing Edmontonians with high-quality custom furniture built to last. Owners Dean and Lorraine Mason, who have owned the business for 17 years, pride

themselves on the Dempseys’ Difference: offering exceptional customer service and a diverse array of Canadian-made tables, chairs, and other furniture that reflects superior craftsmanship. “We enjoy helping people get something unique for their home,” says Dean, “… something they may not have realized was possible.” Two of Dempsey’s most exciting furniture brands are Bermex and Handstone, both Canadian manufacturers that specialize in custom pieces. One of the benefits of buying Canadian-made furniture is the wood is treated to hold up in climates

HOUSE & HOME

specific to Canada. Manufacturers kiln-dry the lumber before building, which removes the moisture, preventing the wood from cracking or splitting in the future. Bermex dining tables are made with solid Birch, and customers can choose from 85 different finishes. Handstone wood options include Oak, Cherry or Maple, and also feature a range of finishes. “You can go with a heavily distressed look to smooth and contemporary, and everything in between,” says Dean. Tables are further customized with leg and pedestal styles, edging and apron detail.

The options continue with chairs and stools, which range from fully upholstered parson’s style to rustic wooden seats in a variety of durable fabrics and leather. Complementary buffets, hutches and sideboards are also available in several finishes with a choice of hardware. With so many options, the Dempsey’s team is on hand to help customers narrow down their preferences. With dining sets, Dean says the first step is determining the table’s size. “Proper scale of the furniture is vitally important to align seating needs with the room’s dimensions,” he says. “You don’t want to overwhelm your space.” At that point, the shape, style and finishings can be chosen. With open floor plans increasing in popularity, the kitchen and dining areas of a home are often designated as a gathering place. Dempsey’s strives

to help people choose furniture not only comfortable and functional, but complementary to the rest of the home’s design. The Dempsey’s team encourage customers to take home samples of materials such as wood, fabrics and leather to ensure they make the best choice. “We want to make sure people get what they want and that it will suit their home,” says Dean. This emphasis on customer satisfaction has garnered the company a loyal following with many customers returning every few years to furnish a different area of their home. “We treat people the way we like to be treated,” says Dean. “Our customers comment on the personal service and are really happy with what they ultimately purchase. They’re buying furniture they’ll keep forever.”

rooms are designed and built for your existing deck or patio, eliminating the need to build a new floor or foundation. The Louvered roof If you’re looking for shade while sitting outside, the louvered roof has the appearance of a pergola, a common feature in gardens or outdoor sitting areas. A pergola faces east to west and blocks direct sunlight for those seated beneath, while remaining open to the sky. With the touch of a button, the slats on the louvered roof can close to block out rain with a tight seal. Butler says owner Randie James was instrumental in the creation and design of the louvered roof. “Randie changed the material from crimped steel to extruded aluminum,” he says. “Extruded aluminum is lighter and stronger — and we also protect it with a powder-coated finish making it beautiful and long-lasting.” As an added bonus, the louvered roof is solar-powered — saving you money and the world energy. Butler says it’s not only James’ revolutionary and innovative thinking that’s kept him a loyal employee for nine years; it’s also being part of such a great team. “Randie is open-minded to allow for personal growth, building jobs within the company,” says Butler. “He encourages a team environment where everyone knows one another.”

lot can happen to your home when you’re out of town. Unfortunate and unexpected situations such as leaks, floods, power outages and break-ins can cause significant damage if not found and addressed. That’s why it’s important to have someone looking after your biggest investment when you can’t. Custom Home Watch Services thoroughly checks your home inside and out during their service visits. plant watering, caring for small pets, lawn care and snow removal. Owners Jeff and Shauna Staub say most home insurance companies suggest you have someone look after your house while you’re away. “If you’re a snowbird, for example, and have no one checking your home, you may not be covered for a basement flood if something happens,” says Shauna. “Homeowners should call their insurance company before they leave home and ask what their policy states regarding this. They are usually

particular about the number of times a week the house needs to be checked in each season.” Homeowners Catherine Brace and Robert Keulers have used Custom Home Watch Services a number of times while travelling abroad. “It gives us a great sense of security and comfort to know our home is personally cared for by a team of professionals who make sure everything is in order, and who will contact you immediately when there’s a need to follow up,” says Brace.

Snowbirds and other travellers are not their only clientele. Custom Home Watch Services also work with estate properties, military houses, oil field properties and with real estate agencies on vacant properties. Many companies pay for this service for their employees, who are required to work out of town frequently or for extended periods of time. Custom Home Watch Services meets with each client at their home with a contract before they leave. “We go over everything the homeowner wants us to do and get all the pertinent contact information from them regarding their insurance company and more,” says Shauna. “While they’re gone, we keep a log of our visits so they can present that to the insurance company if there’s an issue.” Holding the key to someone’s home is a big responsibility and a privilege, says Shauna. Most of their business comes from referrals, something she and Jeff appreciate. “It’s a very personal thing to have someone in your home,” she says. The company has been providing their unique services full time to homeowners in Edmonton and Sherwood Park for nearly two decades, and have recently added Leduc to their service area. All staff are bondable and always ready to serve when the phone rings. Shauna, who’s been running the business for the last five years, says, “I just love the people we work with. Even though I don’t see them often, when something does go wrong, it’s very fulfilling to problem solve and work it out for them.” Custom Home Watch Services 780.992.2275 js@customhomewatchservices.com www.customhomewatchservices.com

Make a Unique First Impression With Quality Craftsmanship By Trina Annand

urb appeal is a fundamental part of having a home you can be proud of; it also boosts value and resale potential of your biggest investment. Many homeowners are now choosing to express their personal style through their garage door. After all, it can occupy up to half of a home’s front facade. The right garage door can add beauty, efficiency and even convenience to any home. At Garage Door Depot, Jim Goode and his dedicated team know quality when it comes to doors and service. “We stand behind our products and staff by offering a two year warranty, something unheard of in the industry,” says Goode. “We make the process as painless as possible. We want every customer to have a good experience with us. No surprises — just great service. Each project is completed as though it was in my own home.”

HOUSE & HOME

With an on-site consultation, the highly trained staff of Garage Door Depot can offer advice on style and product as well as provide a firm quote on the work to be done. It is important to both Goode and his staff that there are no hidden costs or fees associated with their work. This initial appraisal also allows installers to have a seamless and simple installation process. There are as many styles and types of doors as there are personalities. Clients can not only choose the style, material and colour of their doors, but also its efficiency with choices of insulation and door construction. At Garage Door Depot, clients have access to brands like Amarr, TimberValley, FrenchPorte and Haas, providing a nearly limitless selection of attractive options for any home or business. The company’s garage door designs range from a more traditional carriage

house style, reminiscent of old world barn-style doors, to streamlined ultramodern aluminum and glass doors. “We offer everything from retrofits of historic landmark homes to new builds or custom homes,” says Goode. The company even sold the first Trento door in Canada. Designed in Italy by Amaar, the Trento door is created using marine grade hardwood from Japan. The style features a clean trackless design and a built in door operator. With four premium wood grain options, 12 standard colour options and a factory manufactured true black, Garage Door Depot offers clients a wide selection of custom choices. For those who enjoy a more low maintenance approach, the company also has custom doors that look and feel like wood with the durability of a composite material. “At Garage Door Depot we offer the best variety in residential garage doors with designs and styles to fit any budget and taste,” says Goode. Technology also makes its mark with wireless keypads for added security and applications for smartphones and tablets that allow owners to monitor and open their gates or garage doors from anywhere in the world. “Connectivity has really improved over the years. These digital systems allow you to set up maintenance schedules to catch problems before they occur and even set a door or gate to automatically close after a certain period of time. It provides valuable peace of mind for homeowners,” says Goode. Ever shrinking urban lot footprints are also effecting the modern garage. In order to maximize a garage’s useable space, builders and homeowners are looking upwards, building taller spaces to accommodate car lifts. These versatile machines make vehicle maintenance easier and also effectively double parking space. Garage Door Depot offer clients’ solutions to maximize their garage storage space like the Storewall system, cabinets, bicycle racks and much more. “People have more stuff in their lives than ever before — equipment, toys, tools… it all adds up. You need to make the most

out of all the space you have by making it work for you,” says Goode. To add the finishing touches to create the ultimate garage space or ‘man cave,’ Garage Door Depot installs Swisstrax flooring. Providing a perfect custom look, the brand has portable DIY options as well as anti-slip and drainage features. With a wide variety of colours and textures to suit any style from a functional workspace to glossy showroom quality shrine. And like every product Garage Door Depot carries, Swisstrax carries the longest warranty in the industry. Not just limited to residential garage work, Garage Door Depot also offers a full range of commercial products and services. “We do the whole gamut,” says Goode. “Not only do we sell a vast range of first-rate garage door options, we also offer services for all makes and models on the market and 24 hour emergency services.” Most importantly, all the company’s doors come with a lifetime warranty. Goode’s team has a vast amount of experience in the overhead door industry and are personally trained by the owner to ensure Garage Door Depot’s stringent standards are met. Goode values not only his clients and their families, but those of his staff as well: “As a company, we are family driven and we couldn’t do what we do without good people. We try to put our staff and their families at the forefront.” Because of its extensive experience and quality service, Garage Door Depot has an A+ rating with the better business bureau and is a member of the International Door Association. he tried and true analogy “the kitchen is the heart of your home” has never rung truer than in today’s luxury kitchens. They are carefully designed to serve as the ultimate gathering place for each member of your household. Central to the flow of your home’s floor plan, today’s kitchens are spacious and feature prominent, multiuse islands for everything from food preparation to homework and entertaining. Your kitchen

92

Today’s kitchens are nothing if not versatile. But let’s not forget their No. 1 purpose is creating delicious dinners. A luxury kitchen can elevate mealtime from home cooked meals to five-star cuisines. Restaurant technologies are being adapted for the home, with highend appliances serving as showpieces to anchor your design. The latest refrigeration technology maintains the highest standards of air quality, keeping your food fresher longer and maintaining its flavour. Microwaves, meanwhile, are disappearing in favour of rapid cooking ovens that rely primarily on halogen heat to cook almost instantly. Cooking aficionados can certainly attest to the necessity of gas appliances for their sensitive temperature control. In a luxury kitchen, it is only fitting that you experiment with culinary techniques. Your guests will be as impressed with your flambé method as your taste in interior finishes! As the focal point of your home, the kitchen deserves to not only be a beautiful, multifunctional space, but an investment to be taken seriously. The craftsmanship of high quality kitchen cabinetry creates a sculptural wooden work of art with long-term value retention. Maple is a classic, adaptable selection, with current

HOUSE & HOME

design trends leaning toward white and off-white painted finishes. Today’s fine cabinetry often incorporates a two-tone design, contrasting the character of a more natural wooden finish on the island with crisply painted wall cabinets. Flooring, too, is a matter of both practicality and personal taste. While for some the continuity of hardwood flooring maintains flow, for the at-home chef we have seen cork selected for the kitchen as a comfort option. If tile is your preference, you’ll find its durability and variety unmatched, along with the potential to coordinate your backsplash. Careful design considerations set the stage for a breathtaking kitchen. Window placements can highlight design features, while a variety of light fixtures express your individual sense of style. From vintage-inspired to sculptural modern, pendant lights over the island offer endless opportunities to enhance the character of your luxury kitchen. Far beyond utilitarian necessities, sinks are a showpiece in and of themselves. From island prep sinks with built-in garburators to custom etched farm or island trough sinks — all the better to hold ice and bottles while entertaining — this is yet another element that is fully customizable to your lifestyle. Exquisite attention to detail truly brings your kitchen from a necessity to a luxury experience.

A brilliantly cut diamond, a seamlessly tailored ensemble, cuisine catered to your palate. When something is crafted especially for you, there’s a depth to it, a quality that conjures confidence and comfort, inspiration and individuality. Imagine a home built to this ideal, appealing to these senses, a space that timelessly embodies your desires. A flawless fit, your new Augusta Fine Home is so

Peggy Reid, owner of Reid & Siemonsen Design Group, says the main thing is to never eyeball and nail. “It’s worth measuring the piece and doing the math to get it right,” she says. “Once you hang it, it will be there for a period of time and it’s worth it to take your time and do it right.” Tracing the frames you plan to use on plain paper and then taping them to the wall is a great way to get a good visual of your layout before you make any holes. Statement PieceS From five-bynine-foot black-and-white photos to full wall murals, rooms sporting large-scale art prove that bigger is often better. If you’re attracted to a large art piece, but

A

rt can be playful, relaxing or inspiring for its viewers. It can add warmth, make you laugh, whet your appetite or bring tranquility to a room. Deciding on the feeling you want to evoke in your home, and in each particular room, will help you choose the right artwork for your space. Whatever you do, make sure you surround yourself with pieces you love. Salon Style Gallery WallS Gallery walls are a popular option and there are as many ways to do them as there are pieces of art. Galleries of family photos, dog portraits, works by the Masters, album covers, maps, abstracts, botanical prints and collections of just about anything can be hung this way. You can also mix all these items and more in one gallery wall. It will depend completely on the aesthetic you are working towards. Something to remember about salon style galleries is that the real focus is on the overall composition of the wall, not on the individual images themselves. This usually means starting with the largest piece in the centre and placing other pieces around it. Keeping the composition visually balanced is key. Some designers prefer using frames of the same size, frames of one colour or mats that are the same colour and width to unify the gallery. Others insist the distance between the frames be equal on all sides.

are worried about it taking over your room, consider the following. One of the most ideal places for a large work of fine art photography is an open, airy room packed with architectural interest. A single piece of art can strike the perfect balance between the architectural assets and personal contents of a space. If you really want to make a statement with non-representational art, go gigantic. Not only will it be much easier to take notice of the piece but it will also help you define an area or draw people from one space into another. For those who really don’t like a lot of busyness in a room, oversized graphic art may be perfect. By pairing it with just a few key items, the art truly gets to be the star and the overall space will not be overwhelming. Reid says mural or oversized pieces can have quite an impact and create a lot of interest, but they have to be treated individually. “They’re site specific,” she says. “But they have to have enough space around them so they don’t look like they’re crowded in.” Where to Find art Whether you’re looking for a piece that makes a huge statement, stands alone or makes up part of a gallery, finding art that speaks to you will usually take some time and effort. If you would like something original, look in cafés that display the work of local artists and photographers. Visit art galleries and consider renting a piece you like before purchasing it. Look online, in markets and at art auctions. Limited edition prints may be more affordable and there are all kinds of sources for reproductions and prints. An enormous statement piece doesn’t always have to mean spending big bucks. Simply framing something inexpensive, like a map or even blueprints, can be just as artful as something from an art gallery. There’s a lot of talent out there, and some of it may be yours. Check out DIY tutorials on Pinterest and consider making some of your own art. Inspiration for shadow boxes, collages, paintings and turning vintage paint-by-number kits into statement pieces are just a few ideas to get you started.

KELLY LOVELL

A Canadian Business Leader Empowering Youth By Kim Mannix Vermette BUSINESS

FineLifestyles

EDMONTON

97

To describe Kelly Lovell as energetic is an understatement. Yet, it seems a perfect descriptor for the 22-year-old entrepreneur who already has a resume that rivals those of some of the most successful professionals in the country.

T

he Waterloo, Ont. native is CEO of Lovell Corporation, The Kelly Effect, My Effect and Motivation Minders, as well as founder of My Clean City and executive producer and host of YOU Effect, a global youth powered media network featuring a celebrity web series and Rogers TV show. Her mission is to connect youth, business and community, making positive changes for the world. When asked about her typical day and how she finds time to fit everything in, the gregarious Lovell laughs and says she starts early and doesn’t sleep much. “My work is the majority of my life because I love what I do,” she says. It’s clear Lovell really does have a passion for her job — or jobs — and it’s not one that comes from a desire to be rich or powerful. Lovell’s philosophy for her life is the same as her philosophy for work; you need to find what makes you happy and do it with all your heart.

Lovell speaks to audiences about unlocking their potential, following their dreams and not letting obstacles such as youth or inexperience stand in the way of doing what they love. Some of this may sound familiar and cliché, but she understands the importance of remembering these things, and delivers the message speaking from her own unique experience. She’ll tell you there’s really nothing extraordinary about her and the potential is there for everyone. “It’s so disheartening to hear young people say ‘I can’t do this,’ and that’s the end of it. I want to bring awareness that if I can do this, they can too,” she says.

She says the award she’s most proud of is her silver Stevie award for young entrepreneur of the year for women in business. “It was an international nomination that included people in 22 nations, so to be recognized beyond the Canadian business world was exciting,” says Lovell.

Lovell explains it was never her intention to become an entrepreneur and poster girl for youth empowerment in Canada. In fact, when she first enrolled in university it was to pursue sciences and medicine. But once she realized she had an important message to share and that people appreciated hearing it, one streak

She is quick to say even if she never won a single award, she would still be just as passionate about her goals, but the recognition is humbling. The accolades have the added benefit of making her entrance into boardrooms of the business world a little easier, where a youthful voice can sometimes serve as an obstacle.

of inspiration led to more motivation. Soon she found herself as the winner of a dozen awards and accolades, including Governor General of Canada’s Caring Canadian, the youngest of the 2013 Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100, and a recipient of the QEII Diamond Jubilee medal.

“Every talk I do, I hang back to talk to people because it’s in hearing those stories of what they’ve overcome, or how they’ve been inspired, that I get inspired too. It’s then I’ll learn something truly meaningful.” Despite this, Lovell is consistently invited to speak to and advise businesses about ways to engage youth — both as employees and customers. Lovell says the common tips she gives to businesses on how to engage the “me generation” or “generation Z” are meant to help corporations realize young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but the leaders of today. Lovell says the first point to remember when working with youth in business is to give them a voice: “They need space to have their ideas heard, so let them speak at a meeting. Let them share their thoughts.” While it’s the tradition to look at youth as the voices of inexperience, and therefore not as relevant as seasoned employees, Lovell says they should instead be seen as voices of ingenuity. “Embracing that creativity is so important. In youth, we’re not yet jaded and still daring enough to ask: ‘Why is the world the way it is?’ “ She says contrary to the notion that the “me generation” is all about selfishness and materialism, many youth are most interested in opportunities that help them learn and develop. “When given the opportunity, they really value personal development and growth over monetary reward.” Lovell loves to talk about youth, but she is still most inspired talking to and with youth. She says she always welcomes the opportunity to connect with her audience members or young people in the community. She encourages them to reach out to her through her website or Twitter. “Every talk I do, I hang back to talk to people because it’s in hearing those stories of what they’ve overcome, or how they’ve been inspired, that I get inspired too. It’s then I’ll learn something truly meaningful.” TOP Kelly Lovell, photo courtesy of Debbie Lefever
