s I write this, we are midway through the Cleveland International Film Festival. Real life is nearly put on hold for 12 days of mind-expanding movies, shorts and documentaries from all over the world. In the USA Today poll, the CIFF is vying for first place in the top 10 film festivals in the country. While the movies are wonderful, our favorite part is the huge party of people congregating downtown. We always see friends and meet new ones. The annual film festival used to be the one time a year when downtown Cleveland felt truly alive. Lately, however, downtown feels very much alive quite frequently. Waves of millennials and baby boomers are choosing to live in the city. If you want to go out to eat, you’d better make reservations. There’s a new Heinens open at E. 9th and Euclid!

Cleveland’s growth and energy feel like the coming of spring after a long winter, and here in Cleveland, we all know that feeling. This seems like the perfect moment for a Public Square renovation. In this issue we want readers to get a good sense of our city’s past, present and future. Dan Ruminski, Cleveland’s Storyteller, gives us a wonderful vision of our Square’s noble history. Our feature on LAND studio is a portrait of the innovative work behind so many of our city’s dynamic public spaces, including Public Square.

Staff Writers Dylan Yépez, Meg Pauken, Kristal Pettit

For a glimpse of the future, we wanted to expose the creative process currently inspiring kids in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District to become tomorrow’s leaders. Read about the All-City Arts Program and you’ll feel confident the progress we’re seeing in our community will be in good hands with the next generation.

Innovation is this year’s buzzword. It’s all around you, no matter where you live in Greater Cleveland. The arts, our parks, research in science and technology, the young start-ups and the neighborhood businesses which have been around for generations — everyone is feeling the creative energy and outside-the-box thinking. The cultural, technological and economic sectors are positively influencing each other, and together we’ll propel Cleveland to a new era. Happy spring!

DIANE VON FÜRSTENBERG & THE WRAP DRESS

D

By Tonya Lambert

iane von Fürstenberg — her name will always be thought of in conjunction with her iconic wrap dress, her astonishing life, and her efforts to empower and improve the lives of women. Born to an Auschwitz survivor, she married and then divorced a German prince. As a young woman, she developed a dress that was not only remarkably successful, but has also stood the test of time. She was a subject of painter Andy Warhol and graced the cover of Newsweek before the age of 30. The mother of two and grandmother of four is the owner of a multi-million dollar fashion firm for which her lips are the wellknown logo. In 2014, she was listed as the 68th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes magazine. In short, Diane von Fürstenberg has lived a life of such gigantic proportions, it staggers the imagination. In her recently released memoir, The Woman I Wanted To Be,, von Fürstenberg credits her parents with giving her the tools that led to her later success. Since she was young, she has had a fierce desire to be independent and not financially reliant on any man. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I always knew the woman I wanted to be,” says von Fürstenberg. Having apprenticed with Italian textile manufacturer Angelo Feretti, she decided to try her hand at designing women’s clothing. She had some of her designs sewn up and presented them to American Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, who was impressed. When the young designer unveiled her take on the wrap dress, it was her use of the curve-clinging jersey knit fabric that was largely responsible for its tremendous success. Last year marked the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the Diane von Fürstenberg (DVF) wrap dress. As popular as ever before, it is the subject of a new coffee table book, The Journey of a Dress,, and a major exhibition. All encompassing, the DVF wrap dress is sexy yet presentable, practical yet pretty, equally appropriate in the boardroom or at a nightclub. had Verhoff is passionate about both the art and the craft of jewelry design. Verhoff, a master goldsmith, opened Jackson Grey Jewelers in Chagrin Falls in November, offering high quality, custom jewelry to the northeast Ohio community. Visitors will find the Jackson Grey showroom intimate, rather than overwhelming. Verhoff deliberately arranged the space to showcase his creations, while also giving customers a clear view of his workshop. Upon entering the shop, visitors are likely to find him at the bench, apron on, hard at work. “We do all of our work on-site, “ Chad explains, “we don’t have any reason to ship our clients’ items out. The design, creation and repair is done by me, right here in my workshop. I want people to see that as it makes us unique compared to other jewelry stores.” Chad’s greatest satisfaction comes from working with clients to design a unique, meaningful piece of jewelry specifically for them, rather than creating what he personally likes and trying to market and sell it. “Jewelry is art, very personal art, “ Chad offers. “I love to work oneon-one with clients, consulting with them about what they are looking for, designing it and then crafting it.” Chad emphasizes that the personal touch is what sets Jackson Grey Jewelers apart. “We strive to carry a unique selection of finished jewelry for our clients, however if they can’t find what they want, we will work with them to design a one of a kind piece for them” he says. “We want to be their personal jeweler: where they come to purchase jewelry, but also to have their jewelry repaired and restored. There are very few shops that can provide all of these services under one roof.” Verhoff has the ability to remake existing pieces of jewelry, redesigning them to better reflect the current taste of the owner, even combining the stones from several separate pieces into a single new creation. He can take client-owned gemstones and create designs to showcase them, or work with the client’s ideas and obtain the necessary materials to fit the design. “My clients often have a particular look in mind, but they need help to translate it into a wearable piece of art, which is where I can help

them,” he says, adding, ”It is very satisfying to take their ideas and create a piece of jewelry that is exactly what they hoped for.” Jackson Grey Jewelers also offers repair and restoration services, along with appraisals. Chad frequently restores and repairs estate pieces that have been in families for generations. Working on antique pieces requires special knowledge of the materials and techniques used to create them originally. Other jewelers seek out his expertise for such work, as well, because so few jewelry stores have true workshops any more.

and graduate of the Gemological Institute of America, Chad began his career as a teenager and apprenticed under seasoned jewelers and craftsmen, acquiring an understanding of every aspect of design, from paper and pencil sketches to CAD design. He has worked for some of Cleveland’s and the country’s best jewelry design houses. During his career, he has designed commissioned work for celebrities as well as for charities, including Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, The Cleveland Foundation, and the Leukimia and Lymphoma Society. His work is known throughout the United States.

“The craft of jewelry design and repair has really diminished over the years, “ he explains. “It’s an old-world skill that can’t be learned in a textbook or by a computer program. I have worked on my craft for so long that even other jewelry stores who don’t have the in-house expertise to work on those pieces have me do their work for them.”

Verhoff personally developed a unique line of jewelry called Art-Charms. For these, he takes artwork, often children’s, and transforms it into wearable, durable charms, pendants, key chains and cuff links. The charms capture the spirit and design created by the child and make perfect gifts for parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Safely Store Your Clothes for the Season & Protect Your Investment By Dylan Yépez Photos Vincent Gorman

I

t’s been a long, cold and salty winter here in Cleveland. Your boots and pants hems are probably sporting a nice layer of white around the edges. Your coat has picked up its share from brushing up against the car everyday for the last three months. Before storing your coats and clothes, have London Cleaners pick them up and dry-clean them for the season. Alex Shvartshteyn is a third-generation custom tailor, who spent years making and altering garments. Thirty years ago,

14

he decided to channel his thorough understanding of fabrics and clothing into the processes that keep them clean. Alex purchased London Cleaners in 1984 and transformed it into a 100 percent door-todoor dry-cleaning service that can handle any type of clothing and serves Northeast Ohio, from Chardon to Avon Lake and into northern Akron and Medina.

is highly corrosive and can discolor the fabric. Even dust and dirt that is not cleaned out will settle in and can ruin the fabric. Terri explains that some stains deoxidize, similar to after taking a bite out of an apple. You set the apple down and it turns brown. It’s the same process with your clothing pieces which have not been properly cleaned.

Terri, the plant manager at London Cleaners, spoke with us about the best methods of cleaning our garments before putting them away for the season. Salt

Even a little bit of salt left on a garment can ruin the fabric’s color. It’s difficult to wash salt out thoroughly with water. Dry cleaning is the only way to safely remove

STYLE

salt without leaving a damaging residue on the fabric. Fabrics stained by sugars or milk-based products can attract moths putting all of your clothing at risk. Perfumes can also cause discoloration if not cleaned out of the fabric and colors can not be put back into our clothes. Another storage nightmare Terri warns us about is using plastic bags or containers to store clothing items. When your drycleaned garments are delivered to your house they should be taken out of the plastic bags. And don’t forget to clean your Uggs and boots before you put them away until next winter. Proper care both during and between seasons will maintain the investment you’ve made in your clothing. “We’ll Take It From Here” is the London Cleaners’ motto — and these full-service dry cleaners stick to it. “We’re the only company that does exclusively door-todoor, and we’ve perfected the service,” Alex says. Customers can schedule regular service to have London Cleaners routinely stop by their homes or offices, or they can simply call, or email, on an as-needed basis. Nobody needs to be home, so the service is completely hands-off and convenient. Beyond convenience, though, London Cleaners maintains a level of drycleaning service attainable only through decades of experience. From cleaning to preservation and storage, let the experts at London Cleaners take the guesswork out of garment care. emory and emotion are closely linked to our sense of smell. Research has established that the olfactory nerve is located close to the areas of the brain associated with memory and the experience of emotion. This explains why certain scents trigger such vivid memories and the emotions that accompany them. If you could find your happy place by wearing the scent that brings you there, why wouldn’t you? Your happy scent is likely to be waiting for you at Indigo Perfumery in Lakewood. Indigo Perfumery is devoted solely to

small-batch, artisanal perfumes. Owner, Ann Onusko, has expertly curated a collection of local, national and international fragrances, many of which are made with purely natural ingredients. Ann has refined the art of scent through her career as a floral designer and her passion for gardening. “Obviously I’ve worked extensively with flowers, but the garden provides a range of earthy, loam flavors and the spicy tones of herbs,” Ann explains. There is only one location in Ohio where you can find the lines of fragrance available at Indigo Perfumery. While it is possible to order, say Floris or Shay &

Blue from London, it’s much wiser to try a sample and wear it a while. Perfumes change over time and change scent depending on the body chemistry of the wearer. Just because a perfume smells wonderful on a friend, doesn’t guarantee that you’ll enjoy wearing it. Visit Ann in her beautiful space in a turnof-the-century building in Lakewood. Visitors to the store will enjoy the ambiance, but they will also receive an education. “There is a lot more to evaluating sheets than just thread count,” explains Stein. “What matters even more is the type of fiber: long-staple cotton or linen.” The staff will explain the various types of bedding and towels, as well as how to properly care for them. “We carry a line of 100% linen sheets from Italy. These sheets, properly cared for, will literally last forever. They get softer and softer with each wash.”

Investing in fine linens may seem extravagant, but high quality linens improve the quality of sleep. Humans spend about one-third of our lives sleeping, making the investment worthwhile in the long run. In addition to bedding by Matouk, Alexandre Trupault and others, the store carries down products from Ogallala and sumptuous, all cotton terry cloth robes by Chortex. “We carry a variety of towels in different textures, to suit different tastes. Our best selling towel is woven from luxurious Egyptian cotton ‘zero twist’ yarns not only giving a thick and plush feel, but lightweight as well, “ Stein describes.

“Our dinnerware includes a beautiful new stoneware line that is so light, you’d hardly know it was stoneware. It’s very organic in shape; very lovely.”

“Our tabletop department is always changing. We offer a lot of seasonal and holiday items that our customers love,” says Stein. He continues, “We also carry a variety of open-stock glassware made in America and hand-etched by Rolf Glass. Unique, high quality personal care items by Lafco and Michel, such as lotions, soaps and home fragrances complete the bed and bath department.

Cotton offers a few surprises, too. It carries a nice selection of women’s handbags, including the Sloane Ranger line. The mezzanine level of the store is devoted to men’s accessories, such as cuff links from Tokens and Icons, wallets, leather goods and neck and bowties by Bird Dog Bay.

In addition to fine bed linens, Cotton carries a variety of table linens including cloths, napkins, runners and placemats as well as tabletop accessories. New items are stocked seasonally, so the offerings are updated regularly.

Safely Alleviate Sciatic Nerve Pain

Dr. John Livingston Livingston Chiropractic Center 25111 Miles Road, Suite D 440.528.0005 drjklii@hotmail.com jkldc.com

W

e address many health concerns in my office but one of the most common problems that I see daily is sciatica — an acutely painful condition that results from the inflammation or irritation of the sciatic nerve that runs down the back of the leg into the calf, ankle and foot, often causing severe cramping or numbness of the toes, and spasms in the lower back and buttock. Not only is sciatica painful, but it can also be very complex and derive from a number of causes: •

spinal disc herniation, in which the outer layers of the disc fray or tear and result in a protrusion of the intradiscal material with pressure on the sciatic nerve roots;

tight piriformis muscles of the buttock which compress the sciatic nerve at its emanation from the sciatic notch of the pelvis;

spinal stenosis, a congenital or acquired, degenerative narrowing of the spinal canal which physically compresses the sciatic nerve roots;

spinal degenerative disc disease/ osteoarthritis, (also known as degenerative arthritis of the spine) that results in bone spur formation that can rub against the sciatic nerve roots as they leave the spine;

postural changes related to pregnancy, which results in laxity of the ligaments of the pelvis and sacroiliac joint that can refer pain along the sciatic nerve;

along with a number of others.

The good news is that in many of these cases, I have had great success at alleviating the condition of sciatic nerve irritation with entirely conservative approaches — chiropractic treatments, physical therapy, non-surgical spinal decompression therapy, myofascial release, and nutrition — and saved patients tens of thousands of dollars

HEALTH & WELLNESS

on costly and invasive injections and surgeries. The key to the treatment is the evaluation of the condition at its earliest onset, before there are chronic or permanent manifestations of nerve root damage. Once a spinal nerve root has become compressed or irritated, it can quickly deteriorate and degenerate within a matter of only a few weeks to cause severe, unrelenting pain from the nerve root damage itself; muscle spasms; muscular atrophy and loss of muscle mass; and resultant weakness in the leg, leading to noticeable gait changes, and instability in walking. At its advanced stages, sciatic pain can be debilitating and cause the patient to require use of a cane, walker or wheelchair to get around, since the nerve becomes damaged beyond the body’s ability to repair it; it can even result in signs of loss of bowel or bladder control. For more than 20 years, I have treated the condition of sciatica safely and effectively in my office through conservative management, and have helped to restore health to thousands of patients who thought that they had no other options. Give us a call at Livingston Chiropractic Center today at 440.528.0005 to see if this treatment can help you!

Decompression Therapy for Back and Neck Pain By Dylan Yépez Photos Vincent Gorman

B

ack and neck problems can be painful and often debilitating. While medications may help to alleviate the discomfort, they do nothing to repair the underlying issues causing it. Spinal decompression therapy is a painless, nonsurgical approach to treating disc protrusions, herniations and bulges, as well as conditions including pinched nerves and sciatica. “When you’re doing a decompression program, it’s a correctional procedure to move the disc away from the nerve,” explains Dr. John Livingston, a third-generation chiropractic physician who has been in practice for nearly 20 years.

22

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

At Livingston Chiropractic Center, Dr. Livingston and his partners take a holistic approach to healthcare that identifies and addresses the causes of pain, rather than masking the symptoms. For more than eight years, Dr. Livingston has been using decompression therapy to successfully treat a variety of spinal disc problems which can cause back and neck pain. Decompression therapy is quite simple for patients. All they have to do is lie horizontally on the decompression machine, which provides gentle, intermittent and angled traction to the area of the spine where the nerve is pinched. This force separates the

HEALTH & WELLNESS

vertebrae around the protruded disc, creating a vacuum-like effect that draws the disc away from the spinal nerve and back where it belongs. The process is gradual and usually takes about four to eight weeks, depending on how significant the protrusion is. “Much like orthodontics moves the teeth slowly into place with time and pressure,” Dr. Livingston explains, “decompression therapy moves the discs slowly with time and pressure.” Dr. Livingston uses adjunctive therapies, such as cold laser therapy, to promote the setting up of scar tissue, which keeps the disc in place once the protrusion has been corrected.

Dr. Livingston stresses overall health and wellness, and actively incorporates nutritional advice in his treatments to ensure that his patients’ bodies have the nutrients necessary to heal their injuries. “That’s almost as important as the treatment itself,” Dr. Livingston explains. Decompression therapy provides an array of benefits over the surgical alternatives (trimming the affected disc or cutting open the spine to remove the disc). First off, decompression therapy is noninvasive and often painless, so it doesn’t involve taking medications. “A lot of people actually fall asleep on the table during it,” Dr. Livingston says. Patients who undergo this therapy also experience much shorter recovery times compared to those following surgery. At a small fraction of the cost of surgery, moreover, decompression therapy actually yields a higher success rate

than the surgical alternatives. With this therapy, patients also avoid the re-peated need for cortisone injections and addictive medications, which mask the symptoms rather than repairing the structure. If you experience pain, numbness, or weakness in your back or neck, or pain traveling down your arms, and suspect you have a problem with your spinal disc, this may indicate a problem that can be addressed through spinal decompression therapy. For more information call or email Dr. Livingston, visit his website at jkldc.com or visit his office near the intersection of Miles and Richmond Roads. When is it Time to Talk with Your Parents about Home Care? By Dylan Yépez Photos Vincent Gorman

A

s our parents age, they will slowly lose their independence. They will have difficulty accepting that they simply can’t do what they’ve always been able to. This is important to remember as we face the responsibilities of helping them. Even routine tasks like preparing a meal or driving to the store may pose challenges for them. Your primary concern is for their safety but you must also respect their desire for independence.

24

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

Having an open and honest discussion with your parents about home care is important. Watching for possible warning signs can provide a basis for starting that discussion. Are your parents forgetting their appointments? Do you notice that their home or their hygiene isn’t being maintained as it used to be? Have you noticed a change in their personality? Are they becoming socially isolated? Falls are another concern because they could be a sign of diminishing motor skills or balance. It’s important to share your concerns with

HEALTH & WELLNESS

your parents so they know exactly why you’re worried. At the same time, you should be prepared to listen openly so they will share their fears and feelings. “A caregiver can be a wonderful source of support for seniors,” Scott says. “A caregiver actually allows them to maintain an independent lifestyle for much longer. A sudden fall or injury, which could have been avoided with assistance, could actually lead to a dramatic loss of independence.”

Home Care Assistance caregivers provide support for all activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, dressing, ambulating, household tasks, medicine reminders, meal preparation and transportation. They also provide companionship and encourage mental and physical stimulation to promote overall wellness. Caregivers are available for a few hours every day or aroundthe-clock, depending on each client’s individual needs. If you or your siblings are feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of your parents requiring additional assistance with daily activities or if you’re worried about them being alone in the event of an emergency, express your concerns

in a conversation with your parents. More than likely your parents don’t want to be a burden on their children and loved ones and may be slow to let you know when they need help. Opening up communication with them by being proactive and listening carefully can keep fear from overwhelming the conversation. Home Care Assistance has helped thousands of families facing this dilemma. Scott Michaels and his Client Care Manager, Stevie Hatala, can prepare a personalized care plan for your parents’ lifestyle assistance, personal care and companionship. “We make it a priority to allow our clients to maintain as much independence as possible,” Scott explains.

Tired? Maybe You Should See a Dentist By Dylan Yépez Photos Vincent Gorman

Y

ou may think this diminished energy and distractedness that you’ve been experiencing is simply a normal part of aging. Yet you worry about your productivity at work and about feeling so tired while behind the wheel of your car. Maybe your lethargy isn’t about aging. Maybe you just aren’t getting a good night’s sleep. Maybe your dentist can help. Because of the advances in treating sleep disorders with wearable oral devices,

26

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

dentists are at the forefront in treating sleep related disorders like snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Joe Leon and Dr. William Lavigna at Landerhaven Dental Associates have incorporated this important area of treatment into their practice. “Sleep apnea is potentially lifethreatening,” Dr. Leon explains. “You actually stop breathing during sleep, which causes you to briefly awaken without being aware of it. When this

HEALTH & WELLNESS

happens many times throughout the night, this can cause excessive sleepiness during the day leading to a host of medical problems: headaches, memory loss, irritability, decreased sex drive and impaired concentration.” Dr. Leon further warns that left untreated, sleep apnea can cause serious medical and health implications. Men and women of any age or body type can have sleep apnea. The sleep disorder progressively worsens with age and weight gain.

A partnership between physicians and dentists exists to address sleep disorders: doctors will test for and diagnose the specific problem while dentists provide the treatment. The dentists at Landerhaven Dental create customized oral appliances to promote a more restful night’s sleep. The devices fit like a sports mouth guard or orthodontic retainer and prevent the airway from collapsing by either holding the tongue or supporting the jaw in a forward position. With an oral appliance, dentists can minimize or eliminate the symptoms of sleep apnea and snoring in mild to moderate cases. The EMA® (Elastic Mandibular Advancement) oral appliance is a customized removable appliance created for the noninvasive treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. It is one of many types of oral appliances available. This appliance is designed to advance the

mandible, or lower jaw, and open the bite to allow for airflow during sleep. It does not interfere with breathing through the mouth. Dr. Leon points out that these devices are much more convenient than the bedside machines, called C-PAP devices, the primary method of treating sleep apnea. For individuals unable to use C-PAP devices, an oral appliance can serve as an adjunct or alternative treatment of sleep apnea. “What patients appreciate about the oral appliances is that they are worn inside the mouth, they’re portable and do not use electricity or make noise that would bother a sleeping partner,” Dr. Leon explains. “They also allow the wearer to change positions throughout the night.” A followup appointment is recommended to ascertain the effectiveness of the oral device. Dr. Leon and Dr. Lavigna are confident that short-term success is a good indicator of long-term benefits. The

HEALTH & WELLNESS

appliance may need to be adjusted or replaced periodically, but patients should see the immediate benefit of a few restful nights. The patients’ sleep partners usually start feeling less irritable and more energized right away, too. Talk to your doctor about your symptoms. If you are not feeling well rested or have a snoring issue or have been diagnosed already with sleep apnea call Landerhaven Dental Associates to determine if a night time oral appliance may be right for you. Landerhaven Dental Associates also provides comprehensive dental services for all your family and cosmetic dental needs. ABOVE Dr. Leon and Dr. Lavigna

hen Yana Salwan opened Barre Cleveland, Northeast Ohio’s first barre studio, she vowed to keep the classes small and to lead each one herself. Even with women all throughout the greater Cleveland area signing up online at barrecleveland.com, Yana has maintained a 20-person limit in her popular BarreFit classes and has personally ensured that her committed students see results. In fact, three to four hours per week at Barre Cleveland in Beachwood has produced dramatic results to the health and figure of many of Yana’s students, in as little as a month.

The Barre workout draws from ballet, yoga and Pilates, to provide a workout experience that produces results without wearing down your body. Barre takes the body-sculpting elements of each workout style to focus on the areas you care about most: thighs, hips, butt, abs and arms. Slow, sustained motions immediately followed by stretches allow you to strengthen these muscles without bulking them up. Barre provides a thorough cardio and strength workout, while avoiding the type of high-impact movements and heavy lifting that typically leads to joint and back pain. Barre is, to the contrary, restorative and actually helps you to improve your posture,

strengthen your core, and bolster the overall health of your back. The gentle, restorative nature of the barre workout makes it extremely sustainable for women of all fitness levels, ages 18 and up. The classmates you’ll meet at Barre Cleveland will vary widely in age and experience —Yana even has current students as old as 75. That’s because Barre Cleveland is a place where women can confidently work out with other women. The training style fosters a sense of community and familiarity among participants, so you don’t have to worry about judging glances from other women or unwanted attention from men, as is common in traditional gym settings.

This female-only boutique fitness studio will help you to sculpt your body, become slim, and feel sexy, all with the support of a strong community of women who are experiencing the same struggles in pursuit of the same goals as you. “We accommodate every fitness level in every class,” Yana assures. “It’s very inviting — all the ladies know what it feels like to be in class for the first time.” BarreFit has become an integral part of many women’s weekly routines, so some of the most popular class times at Barre Cleveland are filling up a month in advance. emorial Day weekend is a busy spot on our calendar, but space has already been reserved for this year’s All-City Arts musical performance of “Memphis” at Playhouse Square. After seeing a performance of “Rent” by the students in the All-City Arts program last year at the Ohio Theater - as good as the performance we saw on Broadway - we won’t miss “Memphis.” All-City Arts is an after-school and weekend program preparing students for college and life through the visual and performing arts. The program was initiated in 1999 within the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, but has struggled through the years as funding for arts education was drastically reduced. The CMSD Department of Arts Education now oversees the program, collaborating with certified arts teachers, teaching artists and community arts

partners. The Human Fund foundation has also generously supported the AllCity Arts through its annual fundraising events for the past ten years. The All-City Arts program touches 15,000 students annually in grades K-12 in over 100 schools. The students develop musical, performing and visual arts pieces throughout the academic year, including a large-scale winter concert production and the musical at the end of the school year. Students in kindergarten through 8th grade participate in ensembles under the leadership of teachers in their respective school buildings. These smaller groups come together to perform as the All-City K-8 Band, Choir, and Orchestra. Students in 8th through 12th grade can join one of the performance ensembles or visual arts studio groups: Choir, Dance, Drum Line, Jazz Band, or Photography. The program attracts students to

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

after-school programming where they can practice their chosen art form. The 95% graduation rate and college participation statistics for the kids who have participated at least two years in the All-City Arts program constitute solid evidence that the focus and motivation developed by arts education flows into the other areas of students’ lives. Tony Sias, the Director of CMSD’s Department of Arts Education loves to see the impact on the kids, but more importantly he notes the impact on their social and emotional skills and development. “The kids learn to problem solve, critically think and manage dynamics in relationships with each other,” Tony says. Auditions for “Memphis” were held at Playhouse Square at the end of January, attracting more than a hundred kids, ages eighth grade through high school seniors, from 37 different schools. The real-world

experience for the students begins with the professionally run auditions and continues throughout the three and a half months of rehearsals. The approximately 40 kids chosen as cast members will be working with professional directors, stage managers and costume designers who have worked all over the world. The choice of “Memphis” for this year’s production is especially appropriate. “This is a time when race relations are at a very pivotal point. The whole country is just vibrating with tension and particularly in the South,” Kimberly Brown Sias, AllCity Arts Managing Director, says. “In terms of social studies, ‘Memphis’ is a perfect academic tie-in for the students. This beautiful love story brings history to the students and audience members in a truly accessible way.” Last year’s production of “Rent” was performed at matinees attended by students of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, no doubt encouraging many of them to consider auditioning for this year’s production. Evening performances of “Rent” were staged at the Ohio Theater at Playhouse Square and were open to the public, to much acclaim. The production allowed the students to experience immeasurable personal growth from their own efforts. As one student, junior Joshua Delk, explained, “I want to go to Juilliard or NYU and this is a really good experience to help me so when I get out there, I can say this isn’t really so hard because I’ve done this before.” If you are interested in supporting the All-City Music program, the Human Fund is holding its annual summer benefit concert at the Music Box Supper Club on August 22nd featuring Joe Russo’s Almost Dead and Brooklyn band, Turkuaz. Of course, all proceeds benefit the All-City Arts program. For tickets call the Human Fund at 440.893.7529. Seriously consider attending a performance of “Memphis” if you want to be seriously entertained over the Memorial Day weekend. You’ll leave the theater wondering just where you’ll see these kids next - touring through Cleveland in a professional production, on a screen in your local theater, or on Broadway. They are the proud future of our city.

hez François Restaurant provides a fine dining experience unmatched in the Cleveland area, a mere forty-five minutes west of downtown. Its location on the riverfront in downtown Vermilion is charming enough to draw guests, but the real attraction at Chez François is the incomparable cuisine. Matt Mars and Executive Chef, John D’Amico, co-proprietors, believe in living “the good life,” meaning that life should be savored in its simplicity.

Each experience, each meal, should be memorable and worthwhile. They exemplify that philosophy in every meal they serve at Chez François. Mars and D’Amico comb the country to find sources for the finest fresh, seasonal ingredients. They have longstanding relationships with local providers, including Chef’s Garden in Huron, and fish suppliers Jim and John Catanese, in the Cleveland Flats, but also with specialty growers as far away as Oregon and Hawaii. They know each supplier

personally and share with them a passion for high quality, fresh food. Chez François offers exquisitely prepared cuisine in the French style. The menu changes seasonally, sometimes even daily, as particularly ephemeral items, such as fiddleheads or morels, become available. Guests may choose from a traditional menu, consisting of hors d’oeuvres, entrees and desserts, or a Signature Dinner. The Signature Dinner is a five course prix fixe offering, with several options for each course. Chez

François also regularly hosts special events, such as wine dinners and holiday meals, each with a unique menu. Diners may enjoy four distinct venues within the restaurant, each with its own vibe and menu options. The main dining room maintains an elegant, sophisticated setting, where jackets are required for gentlemen. The Riverfront Cafe provides a more casual, yet still upscale dining area, that overlooks the water. In addition to the regular menu, several lighter entrees are also offered to diners there. When weather permits, dining in the Riverfront Cafe is open-air, and when it does not, the area is enclosed in glass, still offering striking views and ambiance. Touché affords yet another option: a martini and wine bar with a bistro atmosphere and an upscale “comfort food” menu, including small plates, as well as entrees. The Parisian Room offers private dining for up to 50 persons and is located behind Touché, offering views of both the Vermilion River and Lake Erie.

Chez François has an extensive, wellcurated selection of fine wines. Chefselected pairings are available to accompany the Signature Dinner and expert staff are happy to recommend selections that will compliment each menu choice. or a city of its size, Cleveland has a remarkable number of exceptional restaurants. We have options for every food style and international cuisine, but sometimes the occasion simply calls for steak. And when one needs a steak, it needs to be wonderful, it needs to be extraordinary. Luckily, you can now have your steak downtown in the Warehouse District or in Pepper Pike, because XO Prime Steaks has opened a second location on the east side. Exuding a warm, contemporary elegance, the ambiance of either location makes it the perfect setting for that special moment, business or pleasure, when only the best steaks and freshest seafood will do. Croatian born restauranteur, Zdenko Zovkic, has spent over 25 years

in the business, beginning at the Intercontinental Hotel in Cologne, Germany. He arrived in Cleveland in the mid-1990’s and opened XO Prime Steaks in the Warehouse District in 2003 after extensive experience with the best hospitality the city has to offer, including the Ritz Carlton and the Shoreby Club. The second location in Pepper Pike has been open a little more than a year in the space formerly occupied by Marbella, on Chagrin Boulevard. The decor is stylishly modern and sophisticated, combining the sparkle of crystal chandeliers with a warm dark chocolate brown wall coloring and fresh design elements. The setting perfectly complements the taste and sophisticated style of the menu.

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

“We have one of the most creative menus in the region, with a variety and quality that is unmatched. XO is known to be more then your typical steakhouse.” Zdenko explains. “We were able to carve out a special niche. Our guests range from local food aficionados, to national and international athletes and celebrities. But it’s also where everybody is treated like family.” XO prides itself on offering only USDA Prime steaks on its menu. No other Cleveland steakhouse can make this claim. USDA Prime is the highest grade designation, received by only 2% of the steak produced in this country. The steaks range from 7-24 ounces, filet to New York Strip, Delmonico and Porterhouse. And not to forget the famous Waygu Tomahawk and Australian Waygu Strip Steaks. The seafood is the freshest available and gets

the same attention as the steaks, including Australian lobster tails, presented in a modern innovative format. The menu is à la carte, with diner’s choice from a delectable list of vegetables and potatoes to accompany your steak or seafood. For an after work moment of peace and joy, pull up an ostrich leather topped bar stool in the lounge. Happy hour is from 5-6:30 p.m. and features sublime cocktails and small plates like baby back ribs, tuna tartare and a grilled vegetable risotto to die for. Both locations offer space for special events like birthdays, rehearsal or business dinners. XO Prime Steaks can accommodate private cocktail parties for up to 250 guests. If you’re planning a sit down affair or a business meeting and need a private or semi-private dining area, XO has the menu and service to create a lasting impression for guests, from 10 to 150 in number. To prepare cedar plank: Purchase cedar roasting planks and soak them in cold water for about 45 mins before using. This will keep the plank from burning up before the salmon is done.

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

Production: Heat up cedar plank in oven (preheated to 400) or on a grill char the plank a little bit for better flavor. Place salmon on warmed plank and season with kosher salt and fresh black pepper. Top with slice of lemon butter and place in preheated oven on a liner pan or on the grill with plank surrounded by a foil liner. This prevents butter from burning and catches butter for basting after eight minutes. Baste salmon for better lemon flavor once or twice during cooking. Six ounce salmon should take about 12 to 14 minutes for medium rare, just add more time to cook through if desired. You can always add more butter at the end for flavor. Store leftover butter in refrigerator or freeze for use later. To serve: Either serve on the plank or remove from plank and serve with fresh arugula tossed with fresh grated Parmesan, lemon and extra virgin olive oil or like at Cedar Creek Grille with house-made slaw and fries.

TorTellini di viTello con prosciuTTo e piselli Veal stuffed tortellini, prosciutto di Parma, green peas and parmigiano reggiano. The Po river valley in Emilia Romagna, is the home of the two most profound ingredients in the Italian cuisine, Prosciutto di Parma and Parmigiano Reggiano. ucked into a discreet space off of Murray Hill in Little Italy, you’ll find an elegant Italian dining experience. Michaelangelo’s opened nine years ago to allow chef Michael Annandono the opportunity to share northern Italian cuisine with food lovers, and lovers in general, in Cleveland. Diners are faced with many options in Little Italy so Jon Fronck, the manager of the front of the house, understands the importance of making the experience in Michelangelo’s special. “We’re providing an elegant, fine dining experience in a comfortable atmosphere,” Jon says.

Michael was trained in Northern Italy, in the Piedmont region. Agnolotti and other hand made pastas on the menu at Michaelangelo’s are a testament to the chef’s training. Jon has worked in all aspects of Cleveland restaurants for 20 years. He met Michael when they were both working at Osteria di Valerio & Al, which Jon credits as an important formative experience in both of their careers. The first thing one might notice on entering the dining area are the wine cabinets flanking the floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace. the inventory is their way of conveying the scope of the selections to their clientele. The Piedmont region produces exceptional wines such as Barolo, Barbaresco and Moscato d’Asti. The Northern Italian wines are well represented in the inventory and professionals are on staff at Michaelangelo’s to help with wine selection. Jon credits his talented waitstaff with helping create the balance between fine dining and the relaxed mood. Michaelangelo’s utilizes a European style service where each table has one primary server, but several servers will deliver through the evening.

Soft LED track lighting also contributes to the relaxed atmosphere. “We spent a lot of time placing the lights strategically to enhance the mood,” Jon explains. There’s a soft glow to the dining area. In summer you can take advantage of the natural light and beautiful container plantings in the outdoor dining area, with a bar and seating for about 25. For your next event, consider reserving Michaelangelo’s private dining room. Most weekends it’s being used for birthday parties, rehearsal dinners, bar and bat mitzvahs. Case, the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospital regularly use the space, as well. After visiting the Cleveland Playhouse recently, we stopped at Michaelangelo’s to complete our romantic evening. We sat in the wine bar at a hightop table near the fireplace. The Saturday evening atmosphere was talkative and comfortable, perfectly at ease in the stylish surroundings. I enjoyed an Italian Old Fashioned and we both started with zuppas: cannellini bean, escarole and venison sausage for him and butternut squash bisque with truffle mascarpone for me. It was evident from the intensity of the flavors that organic produce is routinely incorporated. Deciding on entrees took us some time as each hand made pasta seemed better than the next. We finally chose the veal tortellini with prosciutto and potato gnocchi with hazelnut pesto. Our server was attentive without being intrusive and each course was brought out at the perfect pace to allow us to discuss the play and relax in each other’s company. When we’re thinking Italian, Michaelangelo’s comes to mind first. Find exquisite dining in the heart of Little Italy for your next date night. ove Mexican food? Looking for a new place to try? Tres Potrillos Restaurant in Beachwood is well worth a visit.

Tres Potrillos was founded by three brothers who wanted to bring the best, most authentic food from the Mexican heartland to northeast Ohio. The restaurant, familyowned and operated, features an extensive menu of Mexican favorites, including an array of vegetarian, seafood, chicken, beef and pork options. Tres Potrillos has a full bar, where diners may enjoy hand-crafted specialty margaritas and house-made sangria, plus beer and other spirits. Table-side guacamole preparation is a highlight of the menu. Patrons observe while waitstaff cut ripe avocados and hand-mix them with the

ingredients of their choice. Each serving is prepared to order and the fresh taste is amazing. This guacamole will spoil you for all others. In addition to custom guacamole, the menu includes many other appetizers, including some out-of-the-ordinary options such as Momias, bacon-wrapped shrimp served with a spicy chipotle sauce and Fajita Nachos, nachos smothered with cheese and grilled chicken, steak or veggies. There are a number of soup and salad choices, as well, including Sopa Azteca, a homemade chicken soup with Mexican rice, tomatoes, onions, peppers and cilantro. For the main event, Tres Potrillos offers a large selection of unique, gourmet burritos. Several feature spicy chorizo sausage. Others include chicken, shrimp, and vegetables with different sauces and seasonings. There are a variety of taco, enchilada and fajita preparations, including authentic “street” tacos with steak, chorizo and pineapple, topped with cilantro. Seafood lovers will find plenty to choose from, including delicious fish tacos, shrimp quesadillas and “Camarones La Diabla,” grilled shrimp with zucchini and red peppers in a special sauce. Other seafood offerings include Riviera Salmon and Seafood Parillada, a mouthwatering combination of grilled tilapia, shrimp, scallops and crab accompanied by grilled vegetables and sides of rice, beans, sour cream and guacamole. There are an impressive number of choices for vegetarians, including enchiladas, burritos, avocado tacos, fajitas and a grilled vegetable entree with special Yucatan sauce. Diners may even create their own combination platters, selecting from burrito, tostada, taco, taquito, enchilada, tamale and chile relleno options. The decor of the restaurant was carefully planned to add to the dining experience. Beautifully crafted stone walls and custom furniture created from actual aged tequila barrels create a relaxing and unique ambiance. The waitstaff are attentive and efficient. Stir occasionally as the mixture comes barely to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the garlic is a soft, pale golden, about 30 minutes. The slower the cooking, the sweeter the garlic.

Add the lime juice to the pan and simmer until most of the juice has evaporated or been absorbed into the garlic, about 5 minutes. Stir in the chiles, then taste the mojo de ajo, add salt if needed. Keep warm. The shrimp: Set a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat and spoon in 1 1/2 tablespoons of the oil (but not any garlic) from the mojo. Add half of the shrimp to the skillet, sprinkle generously with salt and stir gently and continuously until the shrimp are just cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in half the cilantro or parsley, if you’re using it. Scoop the shrimp onto a deep serving platter. Repeat with another 1 1/2 tablespoons of garlicky oil and the remaining shrimp. When all of the shrimp are cooked, use a slotted spoon to scoop out the warm bits of garlic and chiles from the mojo pan, and scatter them over the shrimp. (Save remaining oil it’s wonderful for sautéing practically anything.) Serve with lime wedges.

If you’ve been downtown lately, you’ve probably noticed some significant changes. Many of Cleveland’s architectural treasures are being brought back to life with new uses. And, increasingly, more focus is being given to the importance of the public spaces that connect these investments. Nowhere is this more apparent than Public Square, the heart of Cleveland, which is getting some badly needed love and attention. We’d like to shine a light on the ambitious visionaries behind the project: LAND studio.

56

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

Visit the LAND studio website to view a few of the amazing current projects. Like the Lake Link Trail in the Flats, which is bringing together the Cleveland Metroparks, the City of Cleveland, and the Trust for Public Land along with grants from the State of Ohio’s Clean Ohio fund, and generous gifts from the Cleveland Foundation and the George Gund Foundation. And check out the transformation of Buckeye Park through the cooperation of the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, The Buckeye Shaker Square Development Corporation and a host of artists working in mosaic, mural and sculpture mediums. The list of projects LAND studio has organized and executed is extensive, and you have definitely experienced their impact. Have you enjoyed the sculptural flower planters along Euclid Avenue? Did you stand inside CIA graduate, Mark Reigelman’s Reading Nest in the Eastman Reading Garden in the summer of 2013? Have you noticed the artful, joyous streetscapes along Larchmere Boulevard and in Collinwood? How about sitting in the Market Square Park across the street from the West Side Market? The incredible light shows during last summer’s International Gay Games 9?

L

AND studio is Landscape, Art, Neighborhood and Development. Ann Zoller and Gregory Peckham, the executive and managing directors, share our love for Cleveland and have devoted their talents to bringing intelligent design and beauty to its parks and neighborhoods. LAND studio strives to bring government and neighborhood constituencies to the same table with artists and designers, as well as private and corporate partners to make strategic investments in our city’s public spaces. As a mission driven nonprofit, LAND studio is a bridge that can transcend geographic boundaries, politics and personal agendas, to help deliver public projects, large and small, in some of the

city’s most high profile public spaces as well as most challenged communities. With LAND studio, the projects soar. The planning philosophy of LAND studio is inclusive. The public is invited to participate in the conversation between the local, national and international design artists and experts and the governmental agencies involved in the project. Each project is approached with the expectation that the public space will become vibrant and sustainable through the highest level of design, art and creative funding. This vibrancy will encourage the public use of the space, increasing neighboring properties’ values and fostering a stronger community.

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

While continuing their influence throughout Cleveland’s neighborhoods, LAND studio has begun a renovation of Public Square to capitalize on the incredible development of our downtown. They’ve brought the designers behind New York City’s High Line, James Corner Field Operations, to transform a historic space from a somewhat tired, a little forlorn, tract of land to an art-filled, totally useable, energized expanse of green we’ll be drawn to through all seasons. This is a bold, new idea of public space which could not have happened without years of preparation and extensive cooperation between all entities, governmental, civic, corporate and artistic. While enjoying a summer concert and picnic during your lunch break or ice skating with your kids, make a mental note of thanks to LAND studio for their transformative efforts on behalf of the heart of our city - Cleveland’s Public Square. Cleveland’s Public Square Not Just Any Square By Dan Ruminski, The Cleveland Storyteller Photos courtesy the Michael Schwartz Library at Cleveland State University.

Most Clevelanders probably take our Public Square for granted. Today our Square is making news because of the extensive renovations taking place. The rendering of our new revitalized Square suggests that we are returning the Square to what it was before the turn of the 20th century, a park without the intrusion of cars and buses. It was a place for gathering and socializing, a place where people could truly enjoy the heart of the city.

58

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

Early in Cleveland’s history, the vision of surveyors Amos Spafford and Seth Pease laid out a ten acre parcel in the center of town for the purpose of a public square that would give roots to the city. This was 1796. Subsequent events proved the surveyors were right to establish a heart for the city. On the way to his first inauguration, Abraham Lincoln spoke to a crowd of a thousand gathered in the Square from the balcony of the old Weddell House. It was one of the grandest hotels in the county located where the Rockefeller Building stands today. Sadly, in April of 1865, President Lincoln returned to Cleveland in a casket. Lincoln’s body came by train, which stopped at Euclid Avenue and East 55th Street. The casket was placed in a horse-drawn hearse and brought to Public Square for viewing. Thousands of Clevelanders paid their respects while standing in a pouring rain. Charles Brush, the great inventor and resident of Cleveland’s Millionaires’ Row on Euclid Avenue, founded the Brush Electric Company which eventually became part of the General Electric Company. In 1879, he lit up Public Square with his twelve dynamo-powered arc lamps, thus inaugurating the use of electric street lighting throughout the world. The year 1945 saw General Douglas MacArthur ride down Euclid Avenue in a grand parade viewed by thousands of Clevelanders to celebrate the end of World War II. Public Square served as the stop off point for this grand occasion. President Dwight D. Eisenhower spoke on Public Square in the 1950’s to a packed audience. As a youngster I was there to take in this magnificent event. Anchoring the Square is the beloved Sailors and Soldiers Monument. This grand piece of art built by Levi T. Scofield from 1887 to 1894, serves to honor all greater Clevelanders who served proudly during the Civil War. Scofield was truly dedicated to this project, even working without compensation. When the county commissioners refused to pay the total construction costs, Levi paid the balance of $57,500.00 out of his own funds. No greater monument to those who served in America’s Civil War exists in this country. John D. Rockefeller bought newspapers from Bob Hope, Cleveland’s native son and world-class entertainer. Once John D. gave

Hope a $20.00 bill for a newspaper and patiently waited for change. Hope could not change the twenty and suggested Mr. Rockefeller could pay him the next day. Rockefeller immediately scolded Hope and pointed him in the direction of a nearby shop in which the twenty could be changed. Upon Bob Hope’s return, Rockefeller explained that one should always get their money up front. Trust could prove bad for business. Years later, John D. Rockefeller gave away new nickels and dimes to youngsters on Public Square. Take away our Public Square and where would the Van Sweringens, locate their

impressive Terminal Tower complex? The Vans, as the brothers were known in the late 1920’s, built a railroad terminal, a tower and retail space which has more than stood the test of time. Regretfully, the Van’s did not enjoy their great project for very long. As the Great Depression took its toll, they went from being among the richest men in the world to debtors, owing J.P. Morgan Bank over twenty million dollars. Both brothers died in their mid-fifties of heart failure during the mid-1930’s. All of us who have lived here for some time have our own fond memories of events that took place on Public Square.

ARTS, DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

We fondly remember the Christmas lighting ceremonies, Fourth of July fireworks with music from our great Cleveland Orchestra and the magical Christmas display windows of the Higbee Company and May Company that rivaled those of New York City. Let us now, as renovation of the Square gets underway, look forward to new and everlasting memories which will be created on our new Public Square. May visitors return home with the greatest impression of the heart and soul of our wonderful city.

t the end of July last year, we were invited to a destination wedding in Anguilla. We had to consult a map when the invitation arrived. Hence, the beauty of Anguilla. Off the beaten track, this pristine island is not easy to get to and definitely not easy to leave. At present the most direct route of travel is through the island of St. Maarten/Martin, via ferry after landing on the Dutch/ French island. The ferry ride is a 20 minute excursion with phenomenal views of both islands. A proposed flight from Puerto Rico could eliminate one of the lines through customs, but then you wouldn’t get as many stamps in your passport. Anguilla is located in the British Lesser Antilles. Once you arrive, the speed of time reduces to a leisurely tempo known as “island time.” There’s no rush to get anywhere. Your internet connection is likely to be spotty and that’s a good thing. If you truly need a break from the frenetic pace of American life, plant yourself on one of the amazingly white sand beaches and leave Twitter and Instagram behind. We were fortunate enough to experience tropical storm Bertha while we were there, so not only was the internet intermittent, so was electricity. We stayed in the Great House Resort on Rendezvous Bay, offering the most incredible ocean side breezes and views we’ve ever seen.

The day began with a parade of islanders, wending their way to the beach where the grills were warming up for snappers, spiny lobsters, and shrimp, fresh from the sea. o you need a peaceful oasis in the backyard? Or are you looking for a way to entertain your friends during the long, hot days of Cleveland’s summer? Do you wish your grandkids would visit more often? You know a backyard pool would accomplish all of these wishes and more. Best Buy Pools & Spas has over 20 years of experience in the pool building business. Ted Dellas, the owner of Best Buy Pools & Spas, has seen more than a few changes in the technology behind building pools in that time. To the consumer’s benefit, the options and price ranges have

expanded thanks to innovation in building materials and techniques. “Back in the early years of in-ground pool building, concrete and steel were the only options,” Ted explains. “Then advances were made in structural foam plastics during the 70’s which increased the longevity of the pool walls, but they weren’t as strong as the older pools.” Best Buy Pools is proud to bring to Cleveland the Only Alpha pool systems and accessories. Only Alpha is made by an American company at the forefront of innovation in pool technology and materials. Fuzion 5010 is one of the

innovative materials featured in Only Alpha pools. Ted says, “This material is so advanced it really opens up a lot of options for those looking to enhance their property with a pool.” Fuzion 5010 is used in the retaining wall systems of Only Alpha pools. The continuous fiber reinforced composite material blend is designed to maximize strength and flexibility without the weight. With a greater tensile strength than steel, the non-corrosive Fuzion 5010 material is cutting edge technology in swimming pool construction. Comparative analyses were conducted testing the strength-to-weight ratio,

density, tensile strength, stability and flexibility of fiber reinforced composite material to plastic, concrete, steel, and wood. In each of the comparisons the fiber reinforced composite material rated with the best facets of the other materials, yet without their negative factors. For instance, the composite material rated high with concrete in the stability and non-corrosion tests, without concrete’s weaker ratings on deterioration and weight tests. Similar comparative tests were conducted to measure the energy efficiency of the fiber reinforced composite material as against plastic, concrete, steel and wood. In these tests the composite material outperformed each of the other materials, keeping the temperature of the heated in-ground pool water intact and not affected by the colder temperature of the ground around it. This results in lower operating costs an important consideration. The Only Alpha Pool systems utilize technology in a similar way in each of the components of their swimming pools. The pumps and filters operate efficiently and quietly, using less energy than traditional systems. Using environmentally sensitive purifying and sanitizing systems keeps chemicals out of the pool and away from your family. State of the art lighting and pool covers also make energy efficiency a priority using the latest technological innovations. “This is a really exciting time to be in the pool business,” according to Ted. Even if you don’t want to be overrun by friends and grandkids, tell Ted what kind of pool would fit your needs and your budget. He’d love to discuss the options with you. Sumptuous

Bathrooms With Old-WOrld Elegance By Katrina Geenevasen

F

rom the flooring to the architectural details, everything within a room can enhance the desired “wow factor” with elegantly distressed décor. While many of today’s contemporary bathrooms feature modern synthetics, an old-style bathroom favors natural materials — think stone, wood and tumbled marble. Extra details, such as exposed wooden ceiling beams along with arched doors and windows will complete a look. If you opt for faux wood beams, consider a custom-axed finish in order to recreate the look of striking hand-hewn beams for added charisma. When it comes to lighting, it’s all about sconces and chandeliers made from wrought iron with scrolled patterns and beautiful curves. If you want to channel medieval times, opt for a hoop-style chandelier. If glamor is more your style, select a twinkling crystal chandelier that will lend a little sparkle to your bathroom. Bathtub choices are endless. If, however, you want your bathroom to be authentically old-world, select the highest-quality cast iron tub you can find. Timeless and beautiful, cast iron tubs hold heat longer than alternative materials. The only drawback? They can weigh up to 500 lbs., which could pose a problem for upper-level bathrooms. Choose fixtures with long, curved handles in an oil-rubbed bronze to make an oldworld statement. On the other hand, a bridge-style sink faucet features elegant, over-the-counter piping and will help to complete the style statement you’re making in your bathroom. For old-world inspired décor, think richly textured walls in colors that are deep, and regal, and remember that you want to strive for a timeworn effect to achieve the desired result. Whatever your dream is when it comes to designing your new bathroom, dream big. When it comes to a bathroom styled with old- world charm, the sky is the limit.

A BEAUTIFUL AND SAFE INVESTMENT By Dylan Yépez  Photos by Aaron Leyser and courtesy Action Door

N

o home is complete without a garage, and no garage is complete without a door. Yet, when people talk about home remodels, this fundamental piece of architecture is seldom mentioned. Not only are garage doors essential, but also they’re the largest moving objects in a home and can create significant safety hazards if they are old, low quality, or not properly installed. If that’s not enough of a reason to reconsider the way you think about your garage door, then consider this: research has shown that garage doors are, monetarily, the second-best investment you can make in your home, with an 84 percent return on investment. Luckily, the professionals at Action Door have you covered. Using only top-of-the-line products from Wayne-Dalton, which

produces beautiful, safe, and innovative garage doors and parts, Action Door has been Northeast Ohio’s most trusted name in garage door installation and maintenance for the past 47 years. There are many dangers associated with garage doors. First, as they close, their sections are briefly separated by small gaps that quickly and forcefully close as the sections straighten out vertically. Those gaps may be small, but they’re large enough for something, such as a finger, to get caught inside them. And if that happens — well, you get the point. Garage doors also are enormous and heavy, and when they come down, they come down hard. Photo eyes are sensors positioned along the bottom of garage doors that can prevent the doors from crushing whatever is beneath them. When something (or someone) breaks the beams, the door automatically stops and goes back up. With these dangers in mind, Action Door sells doors that are pinch-resistant and equipped with photo eyes, preventing the potential dangers you will find in older or lower-quality garage doors. Not only are Action Door’s products safe, but also beautiful. There are many colors, styles, and windows from which to choose, the hottest being the carriagehouse doors. They go up and down but have hinges and handles, as if they swung open. Everybody wants one. And, you can complement your stylish new door with an equally impressive motor operator. Belt drive motor operators are much quieter than chain drives and come with a lifetime warranty on the belts. No longer are you limited to just hitting a button on your car’s visor to open and close your garage — these days, the options are endless. You can even operate your door from anywhere in the world from your iPhone. Garage door monitors sit on your nightstand next to your bed and let you know if your garage door is open or shut. There’s even a monitor on the unit which allows you to close the door while lying in bed. And, if you’re the type who doesn’t know when to stop before running into the back of your garage, laser parking assistance might be for you. With this, the motor operator lets you know when to stop pulling in. Keyless entry pads can be mounted on the door jamb and can be used by family

or neighbors to open the door without a remote. These are just a few of the garage door accessories available to you from Action Door. Action Door has a vast, 24-hour service department that’s open seven days per week, 365 days per year. With 70 trucks on the road every day, Action Door is always close to you. Take a Holistic Approach to Home Renovations By Meg Pauken Photos Vincent Gorman & Courtesy of J. Hershey Architecture

fter a long winter spent inside, now is the perfect time to think about remodeling and renovating your home. The place to start this journey is with a skilled architect as your guide and advisor. “An architect has the unique ability to take an holistic view of a renovation project by considering not only the aesthetic, but also the structural issues that are involved, “ advises John Hershey, AIA, of J. specific structural challenges best handled by someone specifically trained to resolve them.

“We design our structures to avoid problems at the outset, with consideration for zoning, building codes and all other elements, whether large or small,” Hershey explains. An example he describes, common to many homes, is the presence of ice dams. There are bandaid fixes for the problem once it appears, but proper design can prevent the problem before it starts - along with the damage, mess and repair associated with it. Additions to existing buildings can present

Aesthetically, it is critical that the renovation blend seamlessly with the existing structure. It can be disappointing and visually jarring when renovations appear to be merely “tacked on” and not integrated with the design of the original home.

“Design in the renovation context is a special skill, unique to trained architects,” Hershey explains. “We regularly design kitchens, bathrooms and finished basements, in addition to new homes.” Another important skill a qualified architect brings to the table is a thorough understanding of the costs associated with various materials and construction options, along with the permitting process. “I am happy when I can advise my clients regarding the selection of particular materials or construction options that allow them to stay within budget, but still give them the results they want. These are choices they may not have known about otherwise,” Hershey says.

ooden decks and backyard accoutrements, such as pergolas and gazebos, are stylish extensions of your home that can transform the way you use your outdoor space. Whether it’s a family barbecue, a reunion of friends, or just a relaxing Sunday afternoon, a customized backyard space is the finest place to enjoy it. Its name says “Fence,” but Truline Fence has built elegant, robust decks and backyard structures across northern Ohio for decades. Owner Dave Schwalm was born and raised in Shaker Heights, and began working in the trade in 1977. He started Truline Fence in ’89, as a reliable purveyor and servicer of fences and decks, both residential and commercial.

Twenty-five years later, Dave continues to personally handle every facet of the business, from the initial consultations to the fence and deck installations and maintenance. “I vowed to stay small, give personal service, and make sure I’m on every job site so everything is done perfectly,” Dave says. Dave can work atop any terrain and build anything from a set of back steps to an entire deck with a handicap ramp. He has a specialized focus on wood structures and each of their components, such as railings and steps, to ensure the highest possible quality on those specific jobs. To work within a variety of budgets, Dave builds from all sorts of timber, from composite materials to cedar and highend hardwoods. Tigerwood, for instance, ABOVE David Schwalm

is a popular lumber for creating elegant structures that will last. This superdurable hardwood will thrive in Northeast Ohio’s brutal weather. For a more toneddown, natural aesthetic, teak is a versatile option that also fares extremely well against the elements. Dave uses custom hidden fasteners to hold the deck together without relying on unsightly screws and nails, thus ensuring that the finished deck will look as refined as the hardwood used in its construction. “We hide all the nails on the deck, and we do custom hidden fasteners for deck surfaces,” Dave says. “There are never any nail holes or screws sticking out.” If you’re replacing or updating your deck, fence or railings, don’t worry about the old wood and metal. Dave collects all the scraps and recycles them. “We never put anything into a landfill,” Dave says. “It all gets recycled.” If you’re in the market for a new fence or another structural asset to your backyard, call Dave and he’ll give you a free consultation, including a fair and honest estimate right then and there. “We meet. I measure. I give you a price,” Dave says. Truline Fence provides three-to-five-year workmanship guarantees on all new installations. But you probably won’t need it, because Dave is onsite daily to ensure the job is done right the first time. Truline Fence covers all of northern Ohio. For a family-owned business, Jeff thinks that is important. “We employ local people from the community, instead of buying plants from large growers elsewhere.” Growing locally not only helps the local economy, but it also allows Jeff and his team to grow exactly what they want to offer to their customers. They grow plants that will do well in Northeast Ohio, as well as unusual, hard to find varieties, instead of being limited to stocking only what is

Lowe’s offers chemical free, organically grown vegetable plants in varieties which can also be difficult to find. “We have seen lots of new gardeners, both young and older, who want to grow their own organic produce for the first time. We help them select varieties that will be successful and give them guidance on growing and harvesting,” he explains.

Although he is the President of Lowe’s and wears a lot of hats, Jeff still likes to get out in the field and get his hands dirty. He offers a Garden Coach service, where he will visit a customer’s property and help them identify plants, offer advice about current plantings and help plan for landscape changes. This service is especially helpful for new homeowners, who may be unfamiliar with what is growing in their yards. “Spring is the perfect time to come in and talk to our staff and start planning your landscape for the season,” Jeff suggests. RECLAIMING

Your Home’s

CURB APPEAL By Kristal Pettit Photos courtesy Perfect Power Wash

F

rom cleaning out the flower beds and mulching underneath the trees, to fertilizing the lawn and planting the vegetable garden – it’s no secret that spring brings with it a long to-do list for the average homeowner. Perfect Power Wash owner Mike Palubiak advises all homeowners to also take the time to protect their most valuable asset of all – their homes. “Dirt, debris and other harmful contaminants are literally attacking your home and property,” Palubiak says. “Not only are the effects detracting from your home’s curb appeal, but they can do damage to your roof, siding, patio and driveway.” Perfect Power Wash offers an array of power washing, pressure cleaning and exterior restoration services to keep your home looking like new year-round. With more than 15 years in the power washing industry, Palubiak explains there is a way to avoid the costs of unnecessary replacement and repair. “If you see those dark streaks on your roof, they are more than just discoloration,” he explains. The streaks are caused by a type of algae that feeds on the limestone found in asphalt shingles. The bacteria absorbs moisture in the air and prevents shingles from drying, which can drastically shorten a roof’s lifespan. “If left unchecked, the unsightly algae can do more than ruin curb appeal,” Palubiak says. “If you see it, don’t wait to have it cleaned. It can cause irreversible damage.”

86

FineLifestyles

Mike Palubiak

Perfect Power Wash offers homeowners a soft-wash, low-pressure roof cleaning process using its specialized solution that not only neutralizes the algae, but inhibits future algae growth to keep roofs looking newer longer. The same is true when it comes to a home’s exterior. “Not washing your home regularly allows mold, mildew, dirt and other contaminants to become embedded in your siding,” Palubiak points out. “Beyond the negative impact this has on your home’s beauty, it will also quickly destroy its exterior.” To help keep your home’s exterior looking like new, Perfect Power Wash offers a house washing service for any type of siding including vinyl, aluminum, brick, wood, and stucco. After applying the

biodegradable cleanser that neutralizes any living organism, one of the company’s professionals will do a selective soft bristle brush scrub as needed, followed by a rinse. “Once we’re finished, your home will look like new again,” Palubiak said. Concrete areas – sidewalks, driveways and patios – can be equally vulnerable to moisture and mildew. “Contrary to what people may think, concrete is very porous,” Palubiak says. When moisture freezes during the winter contaminants including road salt, are absorbed into the concrete causing cracking, spalling and chipping. As part of Perfect Power Wash’s concrete cleaning process, the company applies a

protective sealant that forms an invisible protective blockade against moisture, leaving concrete looking its best year-round. Perfect Power Wash is fully insured and uses only the highest quality, environmentally friendly products. efore today’s dull, unsound cookie-cutter houses came along, homes were built with quality craftsmanship, character, and class. The visionaries behind those homes are gone, but their legacy lives on in the architectural masterpieces throughout Cleveland’s oldest suburbs. Anthony Di Francesco comes from a long line of Cleveland masons and bricklayers. This third-generation masonry craftsman has worked in the trade since his youth, and strives to continue the vision and precision of his predecessors. Fifteen years ago, Anthony revived Di Francesco & Sons, the full-service masonry contractor that his father began

many decades ago. “We’re like an oldtime company—I don’t have a big crew or a middleman,” Anthony says. “If you’re working with me, you’ll see me on the job every day.” At Di Francesco & Sons, the focus is on each individual project, to preserve the iconic brick and stone architecture found around Cleveland’s historical neighborhoods, such as Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, and University Heights. “Back in the day, they built these houses with their hands,” Anthony says. “These houses have class, and it’s a privilege to work on them.” Many families love old architecture but use their houses differently today than

HOUSE & HOME

families did a century ago, when most of the local homes were constructed. People like having the freedom to enlarge certain rooms and add others, but they don’t want this to change the style of their home’s exterior. They need to trust that their contractor will match the house’s brick pattern, stonework, windowsills, and other exterior features. “It’s a challenge,” Anthony says. “But it’s a fun challenge.” As a Cleveland Heights resident and active community member, Anthony has a vested interest in ensuring that area homes maintain their unique and classic style. When approaching a job, such as an addition, Anthony always asks himself, “How can I make this look like it’s always been here?”

“You really have to crawl into their minds to match what they built,” Anthony says. “We use brick, stone, steel beams—we make sure it’s going to look the way it needs to look.” From fireplaces and chimneys to garages and driveways, Di Francesco & Sons can handle any job that has to do with brick and stonework. In particular, Anthony sees a lot of potential in basement space that often goes unused or serves only as storage. Di Francesco & Sons recently remodeled a basement in Shaker Heights, adding easily another 500 square feet of livable space in the form of a recreation room with a bar and a bathroom. “There are a lot of basements I’ve been in, in Shaker and Cleveland Heights, that are empty but could really be one killer playroom or private room if they were reconfigured,” Anthony says. “I love remodeled basements, because you can just do so much with them and it keeps the wear and tear down in the main rooms.” Di Francesco & Sons is based in Richmond Heights. Email Anthony at adefo6@yahoo.com with any questions, and call 216.691.6317 to talk about how you can bring your home into the 21st century, without sacrificing its 20th century charm. Finally, Garage Flooring That Lasts By Dylan Yépez Photos Courtesy Garage Finisher

any people have tried to paint their garage floor with store-bought kits or hired a professional to install epoxy flooring only to have a peeling mess a couple years or even months later. After 20 years as an owner of a large painting company, Mario FX Salwan set out to find a better solution. He did just that, with technology invented by Bayer Material Sciences called Polyaspartic.

“Polyaspartic is a higher-grade version of a Polyurea coating similar to what is used as a spray-on bedliner for pick-up trucks,” explains Mario. “The difference is Polyaspartic can be rolled on and has improved properties including being harder, non-yellowing and non-peeling due to hot tires from a car, truck or plane.” Using decades of installation experience, Mario worked with a chemist to formulate this resin into the perfect garage and commercial flooring system Mario F.X. named the Forever Floor and installed by Garage Finisher around the Cleveland area. Garage Finisher also sells this revolutionary coating system to other professional flooring installers throughout the United States and Canada who are amazed at how great their floors now look, how easy they are to clean and how long they last. The Polyaspartic resin can be applied down to negative 30 degrees and dries in one hour. Due to this innovation, Garage Finisher can install floors year round in residential garages, car dealerships and commercial buildings. “The installation process involves hundreds of steps and a lot of equipment, but the floor of a normal twocar garage can be installed in one day and you can drive on the floor the next day,” says Mario. All the items in your garage are removed by Garage Finisher’s crew and put in a Garage Finisher storage trailer on

your driveway while the work is being completed, so you don’t have to lift a finger. Then, Garage Finisher uses concrete grinding equipment connected to specialized vacuums to remove the top layer of your concrete, including any coatings, oil, dirt and contaminants. A two-part liquid Polyurea filler that dries in eight minutes is used to fill all the cracks, pitting and control joints, effectively providing a seamless floor so there is no place for dirt to hide. Garage Finisher applies five separate layers of flooring to your garage floor, each layer drying in one hour. The result is a decorative, non-porous flooring system that is easy to clean and unfazed by hot tires, salt, oil, gasoline and household chemicals. Garage Finisher is so confident in its floor, that after they put away all your belongings, the company provides you with a Lifetime Warranty. All you need to

do to maintain the Forever Floor is hose it down and dry it with the complimentary Garage Finisher squeegee, no additional sealing or expense is needed. Educating Homeowners Since 1921 By Meg Pauken Photos Aaron Leyser

Spring is the time to begin a home improvement project like a new deck, or to replace an older garage that has seen better days. The perfect place to start is at Lyndhurst Lumber. Family owned, Lyndhurst Lumber has been working with homeowners to solve their problems since 1921. They provide expert guidance and advice, in addition to materials and complete installation services for decks, garages, doors and windows.

ritt Raburn, owner, describes their philosophy: “We listen to our customers and focus on solving their problems. That is what makes us stand out.” Raburn describes the typical situation in which a customer visits their store for the first time: “As soon as they come in, they usually know right away they have come to the right place,“ he describes. “One of our team members will greet them and really get to know what they are looking for. We ask a lot of questions to find out what their goals are: are they staying in their house long-term? Are they looking for a mid-range solution? Is this a fix-up in anticipation of selling?” Once the folks at Lyndhurst Lumber have a good understanding of what the customer is looking for, or what problem they are trying to solve, the real education begins. “We let our customers know all of the options that are available to them, and explain the costs, durability and quality of each. Then they can make an informed decision that is best for their situation,” Raburn says. This approach is a contrast from big-box stores, where sales people are focused on selling the products they have in inventory, using a one-size-fits-all model. Raburn has seen first-hand what happens when homeowners make decisions without having a full understanding of their project. They may have thought it was smart to go with the cheapest solution. “We see a lot of frustrated people who wish they would have come to see us first. Somebody sold them something without explaining it, and it wasn’t a good choice,” he says, continuing, “Good advice saves you money in the long run.” Raburn is up-front about their approach: “We help people find the right solution. If we don’t have what they need, we will refer them to someone who does.” In addition to complete deck and garage installations, Lyndhurst Lumber offers

Add Safety and Convenience

when

Child-Proofing Your home By Kristal Pettit Photos Vincent Gorman

hen considering how to child-proof your home you need to think about anything that is electrical in your home. Child-proofing your home, no matter the age of the child, will add safety, convenience and energy savings to any home. Here are a few great ideas from Clover Electric. GFCI Outlets with LED Night Lights. A GFCI and night light combination outlet is a great way to add an element of safety and security in a room. So, instead of plugging in a nightlight which takes up outlet space, this device uses built LED lights that turn on and off automati-cally.

96

Tamper-resistant Outlets. Tamperresistant outlets have proven very effective in preventing electrical injuries resulting from attempting to insert foreign objects into receptacles. A shutter mechanism inside the receptacle blocks access to the contacts unless a 2 prong plug is inserted. This helps ensure hairpins, keys, and other metal objects will be locked out. Smoke Alarms. Joe Talty, owner of Clover Electric recommends putting smoke alarms on every floor of your home, in every bedroom and in the hallway outside of each sleeping area. Joe says, “While the number of alarms might seem

HOUSE & HOME

excessive, this is the best way to alert a sleeping child to the imminent danger of a fire.” Keep in mind, only a qualified electrician should install hardwired smoke alarms. This will assure proper operation over the lifetime of the product. CO Detectors. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a deadly, colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. It’s pro-duced by the incomplete burning of combustible fuels. There should be one CO alarm in-stalled in the hallway outside the bedrooms in each separate sleeping area of the home. Clover Electric recommends hard-wired units because plug-in units can become unplugged and rendered useless.

Occupancy Sensors. Would you like a light to come on when you enter a room? No problem. Occupancy sensors can turn a light on when you enter and shut it off when you leave. Now kids don’t need to think about shutting the light off. Humidity Controlled Bath Fan Switch. How many times have you told the kids to turn on the bath fan when taking a shower to keep the humidity down? Well, now you can have a bath fan that automatically turn on and off based upon the humidity levels in the room. Remote Controlled Lighting. No more walking in to a dark house. Now you can turn on the lights inside your home from the safety of your car. A small device clipped to the visor in your car is all it takes, plus a little help from Clover Electric. Clover Electric has been part of the Northeast Ohio community for more than 30 years and provides electrical installations and repairs for both residential and commercial customers. Customers can rest assured any electrical repair in their home will be handled with care and expertise. Visit CloverElectric.com to learn more about electrical safety in your home. Consider Replacement Doors & Windows

for EnErgy EfficiEncy By Dylan Yépez Photos Courtesy Fine Lifestyles Magazine

verybody has had at least one window in the house that sticks. It’s a very annoying reminder that it’s time to install replacements. By this point, though, the windows probably have been functioning ineffi-ciently for a while, failing to insulate the house and resulting in higher energy bills. In fact, old windows often are the No. 1 source of squandered energy in the home,

102

FineLifestyles

says Ray Sabin, owner of Northcoast Energy Masters. Since 1983, Northcoast Energy Masters has provided reliable and profes-sional insulation services across Northeast Ohio. Its experienced technicians can perform a comprehensive home energy audit to determine if a home is losing energy and, if so, where. Drafty windows and doors are among several common causes of wasted energy in homes. Northcoast En-ergy Masters’

HOUSE & HOME

technicians check for all possible sources of energy loss, and then provide costeffective options tailored to the specific needs of each house. Ray, 34, grew up in the home remodeling industry and has worked with windows and doors his entire life, so he and his team of technicians will know ex-actly which pieces will look and function best in any home. Every door and window that Northcoast Energy Masters installs comes with a

lifetime transferrable war-ranty and is Energy Star-rated, which means it meets energy-efficiency standards established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This is good news for the environment and our pocketbooks, as energy-efficient windows and doors can significantly reduce a home’s heating and cooling costs.

Northcoast Energy Masters also boasts a wide selection of vinyl, fiberglass, and wooden window styles from ProVia and Soft-Lite Windows. Every window is custom-made to fit existing openings of any size and shape. “Not all replacement windows perform the same,” Ray explains. “Just the structure of the window itself matters a lot.”

Northcoast Energy Masters offers a variety of professional-grade entry, storm, and patio doors from Pro-Via, in standard and custom sizes. Wooden doors clearly have aesthetic appeal, but Cleveland’s capri-cious and sometimes extreme weather can make them difficult to maintain. That’s why many homeowners in the area call Northcoast Energy Masters to install high-end fiberglass doors, which emulate the ap-pearance of hardwood, but are much more functional and durable. “Honestly, you can’t even tell it’s not wood,” Ray says.

Vinyl windows, for instance, come in a range of styles, are maintenance-free, and perform the best in terms of preventing drafts and reducing energy costs. Ray describes fiberglass windows, on the other hand, as “a step above everything else.” The newest op-tions on the market, fiberglass windows are durable, maintenance-free, and very energyefficient. Fiber-glass windows are able to withstand severe and prolonged stress without weakening, warping, rotting, shrinking or swelling.

HOUSE & HOME

Wooden windows are ideal for those who prefer a more natural look or want to preserve the original style of an older home. For these homeowners, Northcoast Energy Masters offers windows made from a varie-ty of hardwoods, including poplar, oak, maple, ash and cherry. Repair That Sanitary Line

Without Tearing Up Your Yard By Dylan Yépez Photos Vincent Gorman

I

f you’re fortunate you have never experienced a basement catastrophe involving sewage back-up. It has happened to many of us. And it isn’t pretty. It’s scary, stressful, and possibly danger-ous. Benjamin Franklin Plumbing is prepared to handle the problems which can lead to an ugly flood in the basement. If a foreign object or a buildup of grease is blocking the line, it must be re-moved. If old clay lines have separated or cracked, allowing roots from trees and shrubs to infil-trate the pipe, they must be cleared. If allowed to grow they can actually cause the pipe to cave in, leaving only the option

104

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

of digging a trench through your yard to replace the pipe. Mike Kobella, plumbing operations manager at Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, recommends as a first step, using technology to assess the situation and gather information about the cause and extent of the problem. To do this, Benjamin Franklin Plumbing uses a camera which is snaked in with a 300 foot reel, allowing them to scope and even record the condition of the line. “It used to be that the only technique was to snake the sanitary sewer,” Mike explains. “But often it was only

HOUSE & HOME

a temporary fix, because the roots will continue to grow after they’ve been cleared.” If the camera reveals that the pipes are still intact, but a foreign object or grease is blocking the line, Benjamin Franklin plumbers would jet the pipe clear with a 3000 psi pressurized water source. If there are separations or breaks in the clay pipes, however, they would need to be re-paired. “You’ve seen those trenches going out to the street in your neighborhood, requiring a team of contractors to replace your driveway and repair your landscaping,”

“There’s really nothing the NuFlow system can’t fix” says Mike. “This was the ul-timate fix when snaking just wouldn’t work anymore.” Now there’s another option, not requiring the demolition of your yard and garden. Trenchless repair of cracked or separated pipes is possible with the NuFlow technology employed by Ben-jamin Franklin Plumbing. Using at least one point of entry, but ideally two, the plumber inserts a mesh lining coated in a two-part resin epoxy in the sanitary sewer line. Once it hardens this lining creates a smooth, sol-id surface inside the pipe. The roots can not penetrate the lining and will go elsewhere looking for a moisture source. The lining is also a permanent solution to grease buildup in the line. When grease runs from your dishwasher or kitchen sink, it’s warm and liquified. Once it hits the cool pipe running through the yard it thickens and collects on the rough surface of your old cast iron pipe or the edges of the clay pipe sections. The NuFlow liner gives grease a smooth resin surface to flow along, even if coagulated. The cost of the trenchless repair is roughly the same as a trench going through your yard, but without the driveway, sidewalk and patio replacement and landscaping repairs.

“There’s really nothing the NuFlow system can’t fix,” Mike asserts, and Benjamin Franklin Plumbing offers a five year parts and labor warranty on the lining itself. ommercial roofing may not seem like an exciting topic unless you’re the owner of a piece of commercial property with valuable businesses operating within its walls. Collective Genius:

Linda A Hill.

the Art and Practice of Leading Innovation By Linda A. Hill, Greg Brandeau, Emily Truelove & Kent Lineback

The path out of economic stagnation for many Rust Belt cities has involved innovation. The prior formula of large corporations or manufacturers employing a large segment of the population worked for decades, but has left Pittsburgh, Detroit and Cleveland searching for a new model. Established companies and startups are envisioning products and services which have never existed and methods of delivering those products which are totally new. What fuels the kind of creativity that is leading our city into this new economic era, and is it sustainable? Linda A. Hill, the Wallace Brett Donham Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School and faculty chair of the Leadership Initiative, has coauthored a book containing the answer to those questions. Collective Genius (Boston: Harvard Business Review Press, 2014), written with academic and corporate executive co-authors, illustrates the qualities of leadership which foster innovation. As Professor Hill notes in her introduction, there have been many books on leadership and many books on innovation. This book specifically

108

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

addresses the kind of leader necessary to the creation of new ideas or products. The Washington Post named Collective Genius “a leadership book to watch out for in 2014” and Business Insider listed it as one of the 20 most valuable and interesting business books released last year. Through portraits of industry professionals with track records of successful innovation, Hill shows by example the traits they share in common. From Pixar to Volkswagen, Pfizer to Google, teams of creative individuals have imagined so much more than any one person could alone. Professor Hill demonstrates that the often messy creative process requires a leader - not the traditional leader with his or her own vision, encouraging others to follow - but someone willing to create the environment to allow innovation and to essentially lead from behind the scenes. Collective Genius is a valuable guide to anyone in management who wants to bring out the best in a group of creative thinkers. Hill summarizes the essence of

BUSINESS

her theory: “Every person in your group, whether that’s a small team or a large corporation, contains a slice of genius. Your task as leader is to create a place where all those slices can be elicited, combined, and converted into collective genius.” Chapters 4 and 5 discuss what it takes to create the willingness to innovate: creating the right community and instilling the values and rules to govern the process. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 focus on the skills needed to encourage the group to do the hard work of innovation. While the participants may all want to imagine that new product or technology, human nature can easily stymie the process. A leader creates the ability to innovate, in spite of the group’s innate resistance to it. David Slocum, in writing a review of Collective Genius for Forbes magazine, says, “[U]ltimately the book’s most illuminating lesson [is] that collective genius not only yields more sustainable innovation but transforms leadership itself.” Hill provides lessons not only for current leaders, but those leading Cleveland through the next economic era.

Portfolio Diversification: A Global Perspective

iversification has often been referred to as the only “free lunch” when it comes to achieving favorable long term investment results. Maintaining a portfolio with a mix of equities, fixed income, alternative investments, and cash has long been known as one of the best ways to reduce portfolio risk. Further, it is widely accepted that including foreign investments, historically in the form of equities, will enhance this diversification. What is not always clear, however, is actually how much of a portfolio should be comprised of non-domestic assets.

GLOBAL FINANCIAL MARKETS The internationalization of financial markets has been a truly remarkable story. Over the past forty years, tremendous strides have been made to liberalize and integrate financial markets in part due to a change in investor mentality, as well as easier access to information. As of February, 2015, roughly 48% of the world’s equity market capitalization was outside of the U.S. Over the years, the range in U.S. market share as a percent of the world market has been as low as 30% and as high as 70%. MORE THAN MULTINATIONALS A common belief among many investors is that simply owning shares of U.S.based multinational firms will provide adequate global diversification, however, it is important to know that many of these large corporations tend to manage their foreign operations by hedging out currency risk, effectively eliminating the part of the foreign exposure investors seek. Also, U.S. equities tend to be overrepresented by “new economy” firms, such as biotechnology, information technology, and software, while nonU.S. companies tend to be in older, more established industries such as electronics, autos, etc. Including these industries helps to round out a well balanced portfolio. In general, the U.S. investor (both individual and institutional) has been underexposed to international investments. A common viewpoint has

BUSINESS

been to hold 10 to 20% in international investments. Conversely, largely owing to their cultural heritage, European banks and private investors have long been international investors, oftentimes having more than 50% of portfolios dedicated to non-domestic assets. GLOBAL PRODUCT AVAILABILITY Financial innovation continues to evolve, creating new ways to manage risk. At present, there is an abundance of investment products that allow investors to achieve global diversification among equities, fixed income, real estate, and currency. An increasingly specialized array of vehicles are available in the form of exchange traded funds, mutual funds, and individual foreign securities, all of which can supplement the diversification of a portfolio. Many of these come with a relatively inexpensive cost of ownership, another critical factor in portfolio management success. It is sensible to examine your current portfolio and its geographic composition. Being aware of the opportunities available, and consulting with an advisor on how to achieve a more broadly diversified roster of global investments are steps that can be taken to help improve results. Maintaining a broadly diversified portfolio that is constructed with a global perspective can help to mitigate large swings in value, and provide a better chance at achieving longterm financial goals.

ruck fans and Chevy enthusiasts alike will agree when it comes to workhorses there are few comparable to the Chevrolet and GMC full size pickup truck. Tagged with a few names such as the C or K series, the Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra has had a similar mechanical build since the mid-1960s. In early times these trucks were popular for their unique 305 and 351 V6 engines, which gave them the power and torque capacity many working people needed. Known for their overall quality and reliability, the Silverado and Sierra trucks have become the second best-selling light-duty pickup truck of all time.

The name Silverado was originally used to symbolize a distinctive trim level on the Chevy C/K trucks from 1975 to 1999. Early modes of the GMC Sierra and its Chevy counterpart were very similar in many ways with only slight variations in grilles and interior trims, introduced in the late 1990s. In 1998, Chevrolet launched the Silverado SS (Super Sport) which replaced the C/K series. This exciting new model featured special badging and engine options that gave the pickup a sexier appeal. More recently the Silverado is known for entering the era of the hybrid with its GMT800 standard version and other heavy-duty models that offer four-wheel-drive options, making it ideal for our North American winters, as well as those who have a passion for the off-road experience.

Now that your car has been thoroughly cleaned inside and out the real artistry begins. Paint Correction removes the swirls and imperfections in the paint. It is common for detailing shops to use products that fill in these scratches for a temporary fix, but Rehab Detailing removes them to permanently smooth the paint surface and release the truest color and the most depth and luster of your car’s paint. Even new cars will benefit dramatically from this process which can take up to 20 hours of polishing. The amazing shine and gloss will last for months and sometimes years. There are several choices for the final coating to lock in all the freshly corrected paint. For most cars they recommend a ceramic glass coating. This state of the art sealant will produce a lustrous shell over the paint that will last for two to three years with proper maintenance. If you’re considering selling your car or trading it in, talk with Ross or one of his detailing specialists to decide which package could bring you the most return on your investment.
