SELLER INSIGHT

Situated within the glorious landscape of the Peak District National Park, just a short distance from the charming town of Whaley Bridge is Bankside, a lovely family home that boasts grounds extending to almost two acres, which incorporate a large woodland garden overlooking a pretty canal, as well as a small field.

“When we came across the property twenty-seven years ago, the potential we saw in the house itself was a huge draw but the thing that really sold it to us was this beautiful woodland setting,” say the owners. “Our outlook is stunning; from both the house and garden we can see nothing but trees, the canal and then the fields and hills beyond. It’s a real hidden gem, and so peaceful and picturesque that when we’re at home we feel as if we’re miles from anywhere.”

“The house dates back to the 1890s so it’s very characterful, but it had been neglected for many years before we bought it and so wasn’t in the best state of repair. We refurbished it from top to bottom shortly after moving in, updating the décor, replacing old fixtures and fittings and we also installed double glazing and upped the insulation to make it much more energy efficient. More recently we’ve had the kitchen redone again and we also added what we like to call the ‘west wing’. It’s a lovely one-bed annex, which is ideal for visiting guests but could also be perfect for multi-generational living.”

“The house is lovely, but our favourite feature is definitely the setting. The gardens have been a magical place for the children and grandchildren to play in and explore; we’ve been able to keep animals including horses and sheep out in the field, and we also have several beehives so we’ve been able to make our own honey. For downtime and outside entertaining we’ve added a huge decked terrace – complete with hot tub – that overlooks the canal, and that’s a lovely place to just sit out and watch the canal boats pass by, the abundant wildlife and also the comings and goings on the footpath on the other side. We’ll see dog walkers and horses trotting by; we’ve even seen someone taking their llamas for a walk over there!”

“Another big plus in terms of the location of the house is the fact that as well as enjoying utter peace and seclusion at home, everything we need on a day-to-day basis is close at hand. There’s a Tesco down the road, a great selection of shops and restaurants just a twenty-minute walk away in town, and we can walk or take the bus to the station at either Whaley Bridge or Furness Vale so it’s also very convenient for getting around.”

“It’s this unique and very beautiful setting that we’ll miss most when we leave, and the superb quality of life that it has afforded us. As we said before, it’s a real hidden gem.”*
