Seller Insight The Red House is an elegant period property that occupies a superb location within the picturesque hamlet of Edge. The original, timberframed portion of the house dates back to c1640, and this was beautifully extended during the Georgina era to create what is now a very large and hugely characterful family home. “The previous owners of the house used to hold an annual charity plant sale within the grounds,” says Jo, “and one day, when I happened to come along, I stood and admired the beautiful house and garden, and thought I could definitely live here. Not too long afterwards we discovered that the property was actually up for sale, so we arranged a viewing and bought it the very next day.” “The previous owners had done a wonderful job of sympathetically renovating the property, so it was beautifully presented throughout when we came here, but we too have done a few things here and there to enhance the property further. For example, the kitchen was quite small, so we extended the space and had gorgeous handmade, farmhouse-style units fitted, and we also added a really stunning orangery, which enjoys a splendid panoramic view of the garden.” “This is a beautiful house that has evolved over time, and one which retains a great many original period features,” continues Jo. “The Georgian section has wonderfully high ceilings and huge sash windows, whereas the Tudor part has all the lovely exposed timbers, sections of wattle-and-daub and even the original wooden staircase. The character of the house as a whole was definitely something that really appealed to us.” “The garden is quite spectacular and extends to around an acre. It incorporates rolling lawns that are surrounded by lots of perennial shrubs and flowers, so there’s colour all year round, and we also have a tennis court, which has been well used, not only for tennis but also the odd game of football.” “Since extending it, the kitchen it has definitely become the real hub of the home,” says Jo. “It’s a lovely big family space in which we can cook, eat and relax.” “The location of the house is gorgeous, and as it’s slightly elevated we enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the Shropshire countryside,” says Jo. “However though our immediate surroundings are most definitely very rural we’ve never felt isolated. There’s a very friendly community within the hamlet and everything we might want or need on a day-to-day basis within easy reach.” “The orangery is a lovely feature of the house,” says Jo. “It has under-floor heating, so can be used all year round, and huge comfortable sofas, so it’s a nice space to relax in and enjoy the view of the garden. It’s also large enough to take a dining table, so it’s great for dinner parties.” “Our children have moved on now and we feel that this is a real family home that needs to be filled, but it will definitely be a wrench when the time comes to leave” says Jo. “It’s been a fabulous home and an idyllic place to bring up our family.”
