It takes real vision to convert a derelict Welsh chapel into a stunning contemporary, eco-friendly, open plan, three bedroomed home very well suited to todays modern living style. Troedyrhiw Chapel a former Baptist chapel was built in 1869, restored in 1906 and converted to become the lovely home ‘Ty Troedyrhiw’ by the present owners over the past three years. Located in the small village of Cwmduad situated on the A484 eight miles north of Carmarthen, 6 miles south of Newcastle Emlyn. The friendly community benefit from the local Afon Duad Inn, a restaurant and B&B, as well as participating in the many events held at the active local community centre. The artist/designer owner of this unique home as gone to great effort and expense to ensure the highest quality materials have been used to renovate the chapel, and works have been carried out to a very high standard. The property was almost stripped bare to prepare for transformation seeing insulation added to the floor and walls, new roof trusses and replacement of the original slate tiles thereafter. The use of modern eco friendly heating in the form of an economical Air Source Heat Pump which provides all the hot water required plus underfloor heating to the lower level and radiators to the two upper levels, generates an annual income of approximately £850 per year as part of the RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) seven year scheme which is currently just into 1 year into the scheme, which is transferable to the new owners.

A Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery Unit (MVHR) is installed which via a centrally located continuously running mechanical supply which extracts air via room ducts from moisture producing areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, to remove odours and excessive humidity. This air is passed over a heat exchanger, which transfers a high proportion of the heat of the extracted air to the incoming air, which is then distributed to the habitable rooms via ducts. Whole building ventilation is maintained by a constant flow of air. A boost facility provides rapid extraction when necessary to remove higher levels of pollutants. The former leaded light windows which were in poor repair have been replaced with beautiful new Accoya double and triple glazed windows. The original leaded lights have been re-leaded and repaired and have been used throughout the building. Some of the original glass has been up-cycled and features ‘sprinkled’ in the custom manufactured recycled glass work surfaces in the kitchen. Custom manufactured floor grills – designed by the owner were made at a nearby forge. Oak doors with oak and brass hardware feature throughout. Radiators used in the upper levels are of contemporary styling and are manufactured of Aluminium for maximum efficiency.
