Restaurant Weeks Return to New Mexico March 4 through April 1, 2012

T

he most delicious weeks of the year are back, with even more ways to experience the incomparable cuisine of Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Albuquerque and Taos. New Mexico’s third annual Restaurant Weeks, March 4 through April 1, 2012, introduce the “Let’s Do Lunch” program, giving daytime diners the opportunity to feast on two- or three-course prix-fixe lunches as well as dinners. Santa Fe Restaurant Week kicks off a month-long, statewide culinary celebration that continues in Las Cruces (March 11-18), Albuquerque (March 18-25) and Taos (March 25-April 1). Some 100 restaurants statewide are expected to participate. In addition to value-priced lunches and dinners, people can take advantage of great lodging packages and expand their epicurean horizons through a variety of cooking classes, wine & spirits tastings and other special events. “Now diners can take advantage of bargain prices for business lunches, office celebrations or leisurely mid-day get-togethers, as well as special evenings out,” said Michele Ostrove, president of Wings Media Network, which organizes the local Restaurant Weeks. “The lunch option provides the perfect excuse to start the fun early and experience more of our local culinary diversity in an economical way.” Also new for 2012, dinner pricing will be individually set by restaurants, categorized in four tiers: $ (under $20 per person), $$ ($2129 per person), $$$ ($30-39 per person) and $$$$ ($40 and over per person). Visit www.nmrestaurantweek.com to sort by price category, location and cuisine type to compare menus. Reservations are highly recommended for both lunch and dinner to ensure seating.

Do you know where your house is wasting water?

D

id you know that, across the country, leaks account for more than one trillion gallons of water wasted each year? That’s enough water annually to supply Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado combined. Each year, the average American home wastes more than 10,000 gallons of water on easy-to-fix household leaks. That’s how much water a family uses to wash 10 months’ worth of laundry, and it could be adding 10 percent to your water bill. Check your water bill in winter; if a family of four uses more than 12,000 gallons per month, you may have a leak. If your water bill is not measured in gallons, you can easily find a conversion calculator online. Finding and fixing leaks around the

home is as easy as check, twist and replace. Check toilets for leaks by putting food coloring in the tank and waiting a few minutes; if the color shows up in the bowl before you flush, you have a leak. The culprit may be a worn rubber flapper, which can be easily replaced at a hardware store. You should also check your outdoor watering system this spring for damage from freezing temperatures. Twist the joints connecting your showerhead and use pipe tape to ensure a tighter connection if you’ve got a leak. Outdoors, twist the hose connection tightly to the spigot and replace the hose washer if necessary. Replace worn gaskets to nip faucet drips; one drip per second wastes 3,000 gallons of

water per year! If you need to replace an entire fixture, look for the WaterSense label, which signifies that a product has been independently certified to use less

water and perform well. For information about finding and fixing leaks, visit www.epa.gov/ watersense.

Protecting Your (Digital) Valuables

M

ost people have experienced that uneasy feeling when they lose something valuable: a ring, a phone, money, even a credit card. But how would you feel if you woke up one day to find that you’d lost your entire library of photos, videos or the digital music library you’d spent so much time—and money—creating? It could happen. In fact, if you ask the experts, it will happen. All computers will fail eventually. So what can you do about it? Digital storage devices such as hard drives from Western Digital (WD) are one solution that provides great value and reliability. In a recent survey, nearly 55 percent of consumers said they do not back up or protect the digital content on their computer because either they don’t know how or think it’s too difficult. What makes this statistic more interesting is that nearly 60 percent of the same survey participants said they would miss their computers and its contents most if lost or stolen. Today, the process of backing up important data on your computer is a simple plug-and-play process, so why take the risk? There are a variety of inexpensive, reliable and easy-to-use solutions that are available to suit your lifestyle. For active and mobile consumers, the My Passport portable drives by WD are an

ideal solution, small enough to fit in your pocket but large enough to store and protect thousands of photos, dozens of movies and your entire music library. My Book external hard drives offer larger capacities (up to 3 terabytes), sit on your desk and copy all your files for protection against computer crashes and general failures. For the network-connected home, the My Book Live personal cloud device plugs directly into your wireless router and allows content stored on all computers in the home to be backed up on the single drive. And, because it is attached to your router, you can access all the content from your laptop, iPad, iPhone or other mobile device from anywhere in the world using WD’s WD 2go mobile application for iOS, Android and laptops. People insure cars, homes and lives. Using a digital storage device, such as those made by WD, can be a smart way to protect all your precious digital assets as well.

Convention Center has hosted the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships. World leader Madison taking it to the track Madison is best known for sprinting down the long jump runway, but this year the 2005 world long jump champion is turning heads with her times on the track. Madison owns three of the four fastest times in the world this year. At the USATF Classic, Madison ran the world leader in the prelims and came back to improve it again in the finals to 7.02. But Madison will have to fight to claim her first USA title on the track. Reigning indoor champion Alex Anderson and two-time indoor champion Me’Lisa Barber are two of the top challengers along with 2006 World Indoor silver medalist Lauryn Williams. Richards-Ross on a roll While Richards-Ross struggled with ups and downs in 2011, she has been on a winning streak so far for 2012. In her first season of indoor competition since 2006, Richards-Ross has been victorious in all three races she has entered this year, including running the world leading time of 50.89 with her win at the Millrose Games. The top challenger will be Dee Dee Trotter, who sits at No. 2 on the U.S. list and is also undefeated for the year. Trotter picked up a win earlier in the Visa Championship Series with her win in the 300m at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. Natasha Hastings will also be looking for the win as she looks to defend her 2011 indoor title. Simpson defends double Reigning 1500m world champion Jenny Simpson is entered in both the 1500m and 3,000m. At last year’s edition of the Indoor Championships, Simpson successfully completed the double to win both national titles. Simpson recently won the 1500m at the Millrose Games to garner the top seed time of the field at 4:07:27. Simpson’s top challenger in the 1500m will be Brenda Martinez, who has been on a roll this indoor season after winning the U.S. Open and finishing as the top American at the USATF Classic. In the 3,000m, Simpson will face Sara Hall who has finished as the USA Indoor runner up the past three times in this event. Hall has recent wins under her belt with the USA Cross Country title and the Pan Am Games steeplechase title. In other events, Kristi Castlin is the top entrant in the women’s 60m hurdles with reigning world champion Lolo Jones unable to compete due to a hamstring injury. The women’s 800m should be a close battle with Phoebe Wright, Erica Moore and Latavia Thomas all entered with marks under 2:03. In the women’s 3,000m race walk, the twotime defending USA Indoor champion Maria Michta will face veteran Joanne Dow who has five USA Indoor titles to her name. When Does It Make Sense To Go To The Emergency Room?

E

veryone has a story about a long night spent in the emergency room—the wait, the plastic chairs and the more urgent emergencies that skip ahead of your place in line. Patients, employers and insurers are beginning to question if the ER is always the best choice for every ailment. Until more recently, the ER was the only place to go for medical care after doctors’ offices closed for the day. Today, thousands of urgent care, walk-in clinics and retail health clinics operate nationally to help fill the void and care for patients who need minor medical attention. A RAND Corp study says about 17 percent of all visits to hospital emergency departments nationally could potentially be treated at retail medical clinics or urgent care centers for an estimated savings of $4.4 billion. Customers can see savings in the form of lower co-pays, which range from $100 to $200 for the ER, compared with $10 to $40 for retail health clinics, walk-in clinics and urgent care centers. For example, emergency room charges reported by one insurance company show them averaging $580 to treat strep throat, compared with $90 at urgent care centers and $40 at retail health clinics. Health insurers and self-insured companies also absorb many of these costs, but they can play a role in impacting premiums for members. The affiliated health plans of one health benefits company, WellPoint, have put together an easy-to-use online education program to help

consumers find the closest participating ER alternatives in their states. Members find the Web page by plugging in their health plan name and “urgent care” into online search engines. The Web page provides information on when it’s appropriate to use these alternatives and reinforces when it’s the right time to go to the emergency room. “Current data show that the highest rates of avoidable ER use are among people 34 and younger— those who are less likely to have

a primary care physician but more likely to be technology consumers,” said Dr. Manish Oza, a WellPoint medical director and ER doctor who helped develop the program. “We developed Google Maps in the states where our affiliated health plans are located and create online advertising because that’s where so many people go for information when they’re deciding whether to go to the ER or not.” The best way to be prepared for making these decisions is to:

• Know where your local retail health clinic or urgent care center is located and its hours; • Call a nurses’ hotline or the number on the back of your insurance card to find out if your condition can be treated at a retail health clinic or an urgent care center; • Know your co-pay for ER visits and whether you pay co-insurance for services during those visits. -NAPSI

FUSION Continues Its Tenth Anniversary Season

F

USION presents the New Mexico professional premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winner Donald Margulies’ Time Stands Still. FUSION’s production opens at The Cell Theatre on Thursday, March 1st. Reservations are highly recommended for opening night that includes a catered reception beginning at 7:00 p.m. with curtain at 8:00 p.m. Mr. Margulies’ Tony awardnominated play sets a quartet of characters into motion including Sarah, an injured photojournalist just back from Iraq. Placed within the safe haven of a Brooklyn loft, one couple strives for the comfort of family while Sarah and her partner James, compelled by their work as journalists, intersect with

the heightened reality of war. The play is a story between friends and lovers that also explores the nature of empathy and giving witness to all that is human, both wretched and exalted. “What we get [in Time Stands Still] is the assiduously impartial, clarifying confrontation of the existential dilemmas that confront all of us.” -Bloomberg News. Time Stands Still is directed by Laurie Thomas and features Jacqueline Reid in the role of Sarah and Gregory Wagrowski as James. They are joined by Kate Costello, and Chicago actor Gary Houston (Albuquerque audiences will remember Mr. Houston from his performances in FUSION productions of Bedbound, The Unexpected Man, and Anna

Christie). Time Stands Still continues through March 15th at its home base*, The Cell. Tickets are $30 for general admission, $25 for students and seniors. Thursday performances (excluding opening night) feature a $10.00 student rush (with valid I.D.) and $20 actor rush (with current union card.) The first Saturday matinee, March 3rd, is a Pay-What-You-Wish performance. Group discounts are also available. Free parking is plentiful. The Cell is located at 700 1st St. N.W. (just west of Broadway and south of Lomas.) *During the final weekend, we’re pleased to announce that FUSION will present

Time Stands Still at Santa Fe’s Armory for the Arts on Friday evening, March 16th at 8PM and on Saturday March 17th at 2 and 8 pm.
